This paper is coodensed from several reports by members of the staff of the Minerals Testing Laboratory of the Tennessee Valley Authority, on a series of experimental tests in the beneficiation of barite of the Valley area. These experiments were conducted upon a large number of samples taken from several mines in three different districts. The area contains numerous producing deposits, nearly all of which are hampered by the high iron and silica content of the ores. Because of the small difference in specific gravity between the iron oxide and the barite, a gravity separation is generally poor. The removal of the iron thus offers a special problem. Some of the operators have turned to magnetic separation to meet the shipping requirements for less than one per cent iron. The present experiments were conducted to determine the application of decrepitation or flotation in simplifying the concentration of the barite by removing the iron oxide and silica in one operation. Practically all the barite marketed in the area has been as "off-color" crude. The bleaching studies were made to determine the bleach-ability of the ores to alleviate this inferior grading, placing them on the market as bleached barite. Geology Barite has been produced at many places in the Tennessee Valley area, and prospects and minor deposits are known at many other places, but practically all the production of barite in the Valley has been from the Sweetwater district of East Tennessee. Other leading areas of former production are the Tazewell-Russell counties areas of southwest Virginia, the Del Rio-Stackhouse district of East Tennessee and western North Carolina, and the Fall Branch district of upper East Tennessee. The areas described in this paper are those from which samples used in the concentration tests were obtained.

Very often important discoveries are made in one industry that may be used to advantage in another, but, owing to the rarity that men step out of one industry into another, these discoveries remain unknown outside of the trade or profession in which they are made. The present paper is written solely with the object of bringing to the notice of mining and metallurgical engineers a centrifugal ore-concentrator which eventually may have a great application. Ore- Grading. Fig. 1 represents the action which takes place when solids of different dimensions are stirred up in a box and allowed to settle as minerals of the same size but of different specific gravity. This principle is applied practically in grading china-clay and in enriching tin-slimes. In the latter case the slimes are stirred around in a tub with water and allowed to settle while at the same time the side of the tub is struck with a hammer. The colloidal slimes are then poured off and various slices taken off horizontally. The great drawback of this process is that the particles are deposited horizontally and all the colloids are lost. Fig. 2 represents the action in which the particles are deposited side by side. Here the drawback is the great length of the box needed in order to prevent excessive loss. The alternative to lengthening the box is to increase the force of gravity. Centrifugal force may be regarded practically as the force of gravity augmented. Fig. 3 illustrates the Gee centrifugal machine for grading ores. Rock exposures are usually a very small part of the surface area in any mining district and the prospector and geologist must base their deductions as to the area, extent, and structure of various formations upon exposures that seldom form 5 per cent. of the area studied. Most often, outcrops form less than 1 per cent. of an area, so that exploration for mineralized contacts or mineral-bearing formations necessitates drilling, test pitting or tunneling, shaft sinking, and other underground work. In these days of high costs any method that will give definite facts regarding rock? obscured by soil or other material should be used to the greatest possible extent. In the early days of the Lake Superior iron districts, mines were located in the few places where ore was present in outcrops. Later, larger orebodies have been found, in depressions, obscured by soil and other foreign material. Mineralized rocks are oftentimes more weathered, softer, and more easily eroded than unmineralized rocks. It is quite natural, therefore, to expect that such orebodies (particularly where large enough to influence erosion in former physiographic conditions) should lie in depressions and be obscured by later debris. It is not difficult to believe that the history of the development of Lake Superior iron mining may be duplicated in other mining districts, that even larger orebodies than those first mined may be found in areas where the rock exposures, which led to original discoveries, are few or lacking. The chief properties of rocks that can manifest themselves through an obscuring cover are magnetism, electrical effects, radio-activity, gravity, and sound transmission. All of these have been used, to a small extent, to tell us a few things about what lies below the surface that we could not otherwise determine, but none has been used so long and so widely as

Approximately two years ago the authors obtained data that indicated that initial precipitation could not be detected by change of lattice parameter in the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Some of these data were first published in a brief note in Mining and Metallurgy'. Cast specimens were used at that time and they showed initial precipitation relatively sooner than sheet material of the same composition. For this reason a more thorough investigation has been carried out using a homogenized aluminum-magnesium sheet corltairling approximately 10 per cent magnesium. Materials.—The aluminum used in the preparation of the aluminum-magnesium alloy was of high purity, containing less than 0.01 per cent each of iron, silicon and copper. The magnesium was high-purity sublimed magnesium. Preparation of Alloy.—Approximately 4 kg. of the aluminunl was melted in a plumbago crucible in an electric furnace and the magnesium was added. The melt was thoroughly stirred with a graphite rod and fluxed with chlorine gas before casting. The alloy was cast in the form of a sheet ingot in a cold iron tilting mold (approximately 200 by 165 by 40 mm.) and into small chill-cast slabs for chemical analysis (75 by 40 by 5 mm.). The chemical analyses were made upon drillings from the analysis slabs. The analytical methods were those described in "Chemical Analysis of Aluminum," published by the Aluminum Company of America. The composition of the alloy was found to be: magnesium 10.30, silicon 0.013, iron 0.008 and copper 0.005 per cent. In order to insure homogeneity the alloy was given two intermediate anneals at 430' C. for a total time of 36 hr. The ingot was hot-rolled

IN CIRCLES where mining men are wont to fraternize, a statement often heard is: "Yes, I spent six (or two, or ten, or thirty) years down at 'Chuqui.' " This means Chuquicamata, the site in Chile of what in all probability is the world's largest deposit of copper ore. One hears similar remarks regarding Braden and Andes, and, in fact, regarding a score of other big mines in South America, Africa, and elsewhere, but Chuqui seems to lead the others as the locale of engineers who have done a stint in foreign countries. One reason probably is that it is the Anaconda Company's premier foreign operation. Because of its unusual size and the diversity of its operations a great many men are needed. It is a sort of training school for young engineers; but, also, Anaconda has sent down a great many mature members of its big organization for special assignments like metallurgical research or plant construction. Chuquicamata is about 150 miles northeast of Antofagasta, at an elevation of 9,500 ft. It is in an almost rainless desert country where the wind (it is alleged by some) blows most of the time. However, the copper mining entrepreneurs have done their best to make up for what nature has neglected to do in creating a pleasant environment for the people who operate the mines. These include about 160 "foreigners" of whom 86 are from the United States, most of them accompanied by their families. There are 165 Chileans on the staff. Comforts, conveniences, and many luxuries are provided to offset in some measure the disagreeable features of the climate. Nevertheless, as I have implied, engineers at Chuqui generally jump at the chance to become "alumni" when opportunity offers. At the same time, they appear to take pride in their alma mater.

With the rapid development of Canadian industries calling for the use of fire-brick for the lining of furnaces or cement-kilns, for constructing brick-kilns or coke-ovens, for lead-furnaces, etc., the question has often arisen whether the provirices within the Dominion have not the necessary raw materials for the manufacture of such refractory wares. As an indication for the need of such products in Canada, me find that the imports in 1910 amounted in value to $519,454. The materials came in part from Great Britain, and part from the United States. Those supplied by the latter country are obtained largely from Pennsylvania and Ohio, and when shipped to distant points, such as British Columbia, the item of transportation is a serious factor. Scotch fire-brick is used both in eastern and western Canada, but in the latter case the shipments are made by water route to Vancouver. During the past four years I have been investigating the clay-deposits of Canada, for the Canadian Geological Survey, and while all types of clay have been included in the study, special pains have been taken to ascertain the occurrence of refractory clays. As a result of this work we are able to report on the existence of beds of refractory clays at the followiug localities: Inverness and Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia; St. Remi, d'Amherst, Quebec; Dirt Hills and Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan; Sumas Mountain, near Clayburn, B. C., and Kyuquot, on northwestern Vancouver Island. A map of Canada, showing the fire-clay deposits, is given in Fig. 1. It is possible that other deposits may be discovered in the future in districts remotely located from the present lines of railroad.

Conservation Means Preservation, Improvement, Justice CONSERVATION, narrowly and strictly considered, means the preservation in unimpaired efficiency of the resources of the earth; or in a condition so nearly unimpaired as the nature of the case, or wise exhaustion, admits. And broadly considered, it means more than the word itself implies, for it naturally includes an examination of methods whereby the natural inheritance of the human race. may he improved; and still more broadly considered-and as used in popular discussion-it includes a treatment of the effects of productive conservation measures upon distribution. We shall give our attention briefly to the main points in this informal definition before we pass on to the thesis that conservation is largely a matter of property relations-that a wise conservation policy means wise property relations. Preservation of Natural Resources First, conservation suggests simply preservation, and, in the treatment of the subject which we have had in the United States, emphasis has been laid upon the past and present waste of natural resources and upon the means of putting a stop to this waste. The forests have been depleted; soil has been washed by rapidly flowing surface water from mountain sides. These rapidly flowing waters have produced high streams and devastating inundations, followed by low streams and impeded navigation. The forests have, moreover, been so removed as to bring great danger of fire, and destructive conflagrations have resulted in large waste of resources, including in some cases a destruction of the humus, supplying essential elements in the fertile soil. As a remedy we must have measures to reforest mountain sides, and this means large social control, very frequently taking the form of public ownership and management; but in addition we always find actual and proposed

There are important phenomena in rock and soil mechanics that cannot be explained in terms of theories of homogeneous, isotropic materials. Subsidence of strata about mine openings is an example. In-situ stress measurements in nonisotropic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks is another. Patterns of joints, faults, fractures, and similar geologic features impart directional mechanical properties to rock masses that are locally isotropic or anisotropic. On the geologic scale, the nonhomogeneity of composite rock masses may, in certain instances, be dealt with as homogeneous anisotropy. The mechanics of large rock masses can, therefore, be expected to involve considerations of anisotropy. The source of the anisotropy is not relevant. Once the scale of observation is selected and the material is defined accordingly, the analysis of stress and deformation proceeds without regard to the numerical values of the material constants. There are also important phenomena in rock and soil mechanics that cannot be explained in terms of linear elasticity, theory. For the mechanical description of anisotropic geologic materials capable of deforming beyond the limit of purely elastic strains, a plasticity theory is required. The purpose of this chapter is to present a plasticity theory for anisotropic rocks and soils. The proposed theory is based on the work of Hill in anisotropic metal plasticity and represents an extension of his work so as to include anisotropic geologic materials. The point of departure from metal plasticity theory begins with the inclusion of the normal stresses as linear terms in the yield condition, which plays a central role in plasticity. Once the yield condition is established, the plastic strain increments are obtained immediately through the principle of normality. Pine Point Mines is located in the Canadian Northwest Territories about 1,200 kilometers north of Edmonton, Alberta, close to the south shore of Great Slave Lake. Originally staked in 1898 by prospectors en route to the Dondike gold rush, it was not until the mid-1940's that large scale exploration was undertaken and Pine Point Mines Limited was formed. Work was suspended in 1954 while studies were made to resolve one of the main problems, transportation. In 1961, under the Canadian Government "Roads to Resources" program, agreement was reached for the construction of the Great Slave Lake Railroad and plans made to put the property into production. A townsite was established in 1963 and plant construction commenced. The first production was in the form of high grade ore which was shipped to Kimberley, B.C. for concentration starting in late 1964. The Pine Point concentrator started up in late 1965 when hydroelectric power became available. Initially designed for 4,540 metric ton per day, facilities were expanded to a designed 7,250 metric ton per day in 1969. Problems associated with mining operations at Pine Point are not unique but are augmented by the isolation, climatic conditions, topography, high water table and spread out nature of the operation. Maintenance of a reasonably stable work force is the number one problem but this is gradually being overcome as more local people are trained and oriented from a nomadic type life to an industrial society. The purpose of this paper is to give a general description of the mining operations of Pine Point Mines Limited and to review some of the problems encountered in the operation along with problems associated with northern operations.

A good place to look for elephants is in elephant country, and old mining districts are certainly elephant country as far as minerals are concerned. In many areas probably more ore is still in the ground than has been taken out. The old timers were good miners and hard workers and when they left ore behind, it was usually for good reason; but many an old mining district has been revived by new approaches to old problems, taking advantage of new techniques and new equipment. One of these is the Front Range mineral belt of Colorado, which has produced minerals for the past 100 years through the ups and downs of mineral prices and the general economy. Gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc have been found in abundance in the complex sulfide veins of the area. Between Idaho Springs and Central City lie several strong veins which have been mined successfully in the past. The two strongest of these veins, striking northeast-southwest, (Lake-Bald Eagle), and northwest-southeast, (Crown Point-Belman) , and dipping northeast and northwest, respectively, intersect in a flat X near the head of Virginia Canyon. From the lowest drainage of the area, Clear Creek Canyon, the old timers drove the Central, or Big Five, haulage-drainage tunnel due north. It intersects the two veins 8460 ft from the portal and 1670 ft below the surface. The two veins were mined successfully at the surface and at the tunnel level. Without an opening to the surface at the in- side end of the tunnel, ventilating became very difficult as the stopes were opened up, and mining ceased in 1929. Vertically, 1200 to 1600 ft of virgin ground remains in the veins.

THE presence of carbon de terre along the banks of the Illinois river was noted by the members of the Joliet and Marquette expeditions in 1673, and that may be referred to as the birthday of coal in the Middle West. The march of progress in the majority of indus-tries radiating from Chicago-one of the phenomena of history-is due in no small measure to this same carbon de terre and to the development and exploita-tion of the vast coal resources, which nature in a generous mood spread so lavishly over almost the en-tire state. The geological records indicate that coal-bearing rocks underlie three-quarters of Illinois, in-cluding 85 of the 102 counties and the entire area is estimated at from 36,000 to 42,000 square miles. Not all of the coal in this great area may be mined under the conditions existing today; producers are now taking the "cream" since industry demands the best quality and the lowest cost, thereby forcing competition among operators, which, in turn, com-pels the development of mines in those areas where the coal may be most readily .won, leaving the coal that is more difficult and expensive to mine to pos-terity. This is not such a bad arrangement, since the engineers of succeeding generations will enjoy the advantage of the experience of their ancestors, where-by they should profit and know how to mine a 2-ft. seam with as much economy and dispatch as we today work coal of thrice that thickness. During the period between 1830 and 1850, Illinois coal-mining progressed from the art of scratching along the outcrop to the development of small mines, mostly slopes, drifts and shallow shafts, but the real progress in the industry was coincident with the con-struction of railroads.

EDUCATION for the mineral industry was at first a single comprehensive curriculum, but it was early recognized that the main basis of mining is physics, while that of metallurgy is chemistry. The first school to offer curricula leading to degrees in mineral industry education in the United States (1853) had separate ones in mining and metallurgy. The Columbia School of Mines (the fist really successful one) had only a single curriculum when it opened in 1864, but within a few years had so reorganized its work that it offered curricula in mining, metallurgy, geology, chemistry, and civil engineering. Interest in the metallurgy or geology curricula was slight at fist, and for the next 30 years the great majority of Columbia students took the mining curriculum, probably partly because it contained nearly as much geology as the geology curriculum, practically all the metallurgy, and most of the chemistry, and partly because of the degree awarded for it. Other schools kept their mining curricula equally broad, and as late as 1900-1910 men were graduating as mining engineers who were practically as well prepared to make geology or metallurgy their life work as they were for mining. Gradually, however, the subject matter of mining geology and metallurgy became so enriched through research and development that separate curricula in them became worth while; their progressive development is the subject of another chapter. Mining curricula also began to be somewhat diversified, and schools in areas where coal mining was of outstanding importance began to offer options in coal mining, the earlier curricula having been chiefly aimed at metal mining. The petroleum industry began its meteoric rise about the same time as mineral instruction in this country, but little more of applied science attended its birth than had attended such ancient practical arts as copper and iron

THIS paper presents in an abbreviated form the chief points of interest in an investigation of the tarnish-resistant qualities of silver alloys, an investigation which has been carried out as a joint research by the Bureau of Mines and the Bureau of Standards and will later be reported in detail in an official publication from these bureaus. In 1923 a Commission of Gold and Silver Inquiry was created by a Resolution of the U. S. Senate to study the causes of the depressed condi¬tion of the gold and silver industry. In cooperation with this commission the Bureau of Mines made a preliminary survey to determine in what ways, if any, it might be possible to increase the uses of silver. One of the possibilities indicated by this survey was the development of silver alloys which should be non-tarnishing, or at least less-tarnishing, than the usual sterling silver (copper-silver). The preparation of a rather wide variety of silver alloys and the determination of their behavior under accelerated tarnish tests in the laboratory was therefore undertaken by the bureaus, of Mines and Standards as a joint investigation. PREVIOUS WORK ON TARNISH RESISTING SILVERS At about the time this work was undertaken interest in tarnish-resisting silvers was rather keen due to announcements from England that there had been developed a new silver alloy, "Silanca," which was resistant to tarnish. It was even frequently described in the popular press as "non-tarnishing." A few samples and several analyses of "Silanca" which were available indicated that it was an alloy of sterling fineness, that is, it contained about 93 per cent. of silver, with approximately 4.5 per cent. of antimony and either cadmium or zinc, or both, to make the remaining 2.5 per cent.

When separate treatment of sand and slime by cyanidation was the rule rather than the exception, as now, and when gravity concentration, rather than flotation, was the accepted method of dressing copper, lead, zinc and other base ores, classification was a separate step in ore treatment. Today, however, the picture is much different. The trend toward all-slime treatment in cyanidation and flotation has made fine closed-circuit grinding essential, and the mechanical classifier is of equal importance with the mill in the preparation of an ore for its treatment. Actually, a mill and classifier are a unit, a variation in either affecting the desired results. In developing this thesis—the mutual interdependence of the rotary mill and the classifier in modern fine-grinding practice—it would be well to consider first the different types of classifiers and mills in use today, their scope and limitations and the factors governing their selection. From such a basis as this a logical approach may be made to modern closed-circuit fine grinding, the evolution of multiple-stage grinding practice, the relation of the classifier to the mill and, finally, the trend to higher and higher circulating sand loads in the mill-classifier circuit. Such data as are germane to the subject will be given to support the thesis advanced. THE scope of this article covers only the mathematical principles involved in discounting to present worth future expected profits and it is believed answers definitely two questions, which were raised at a recent meeting of the Committee on Methods of Valuing Coal Properties, as follows: 1. The accumulative effect of carrying charges on the value of coal mines showing definitely the number of years beyond which the coal may not be mined at a profit and subsequent to which the possession of any unmined coal will be a liability rather than an asset. 2. The effect on the valuation of coal mines, in the presence of the carrying charges described in question 1, of an increase in plant capacity and production. In general, in considering these questions, it may be stated that the consideration of an increase in plant capacity and production follows as a matter of course after a determination has been made of the year beyond which no profits are to be realized (giving the carrying. charges accumulative effect, or in other words capitalizing the carrying charges, as shown hereinafter). For example, if it is determined that any coal that is unmined after 45 years will have no value or less than no value, the question immediately arises as to whether or not a plant should be constructed that would result in a yearly production great enough to extract the entire tonnage in a time less than 45 years, and if so the number 'of years less than 45 years that would, from a financial stand-point, be the most desirable, all under the assumption that the market for the product or the transportation facilities are such that the yearly production can be increased to the desired amount.

DUring experimental study on the separation of a zinc concentrate from the heavy sulfide ores of Jerome, Ariz., a great deal of attention has been given to proper activation of the sphalerite content of the ore. The sphalerite at Jerome contains enough iron to class it as a marmatite, as picked specimens have only about 60 per cent. zinc, whereas pure zinc sulfide contains 67 per cent. zinc. This marmatite in large pieces is black in color, but in dry powdered state is brown. A flotation froth made from it has a silvery black luster in comparison with a brassy luster caused by chalcopyrite which occurs in the same ores. The sample used in most of the experiments described below consisted of about 3000 Ib. of diamond-drill core from the zinc-bearing orebodies of the United Verde mine, and had the following analysis: Per Cent. Chalcopyrite................... 2.0 Schist........................... 3.2 Marmatite..................... 10.32 Quartz........................... 8.2 Pyrite........................ 73.0 Calcite.......................... 0.9 All samples were ground in a laboratory ball mill in order to leave about 3 per cent. on a 200-mesh sieve, fine grinding being essential to liberate the minerals in the ore. Most of the Jerome ores are so intimately crystallized that reasonably complete unlocking by grinding does not take place until 800 mesh is approached. Therefore, the 200-mesh grind adopted contains a considerable amount of locked mineral grains, but not so much as to render impossible the preparation of commercial grades of concentrate.

Many of the parts of motor cars, aircraft, etc., that require strong light construction, hence must be made of high-quality steel, are stressed to the maximum limit only in a very small volume. In parts subject to bending stress a line or even a point may take the maximum stress. A series of endurance tests under repeated bending in progress in the U. S. Bureau of Mines laboratories, like similar tests by other investigators, has shown the great difference in life of sister bars of the same stecl, handled in the same way and tested at the same nominal stress. It is known that a surface notch or scratch greatly increases the local stress over the nominal calculated stress; internal notches, such as those formed by inclusions or sonims, probably have a similar effect. From the tetss made by the Bureau of Mines, the cleanliness of the steel at the dangerous section, or point of maximum stress, seems to be one of the most important factors in determining the life of the piece. The more localized the stress, the more does chance, rather than the average properties, dctermine the life of the steel. The usual test, a tension test of a bar taken longitudinally, is not sensitive to the local drop in strength (or tendency to increase the true local stress over the nominal) because of inclusions, which probably have a more injurious effect in hard heat-treated steels, such as must be used when great strength is sought, than in softer steels. Users of steel who make transverse tests find surprisingly low ductility on transverse bars of dirty steel, though the longitudinal tests may be good. MAGNESITE is found in 22 California counties, but many of the deposits are too small or too impure to be of commercial value. Several of sub-stantial size and quality were entirely exhausted by wartime operation. At present, three properties comprise the only known workable deposits in the state. Of these, the Western mine and the Patterson mine have been known and worked for many years, and have been described in con-siderable detail in various publications, therefore need only brief mention here, because of their proximity to the Bald Eagle mine. The latter, recently developed, is unusual in type of ore deposit, plant design and operation, as well as products made, and very little has been written concerning it. WESTERN MINE The Western mine, 32 miles south of Livermore, Calif., was formerly operated by C. S. Maltby. It has been a consistent producer for many years.1 The ore is of amorphous variety, occurring along fracture zones in serpentine. The veins vary greatly in width, the average being perhaps 8 ft., with the maximum indicated in one early stope of 40 ft.; 2 ft. is considered the minimum for economical mining. The strike of the veins is predominantly north and south, with dip to the west varying from 40° to 75°. Walls are well defined and as a rule firm and easily supported, Veins range in length from a few hundred feet to 1000 or more. Their maximum vertical extent is about 350 ft., but many run less. For the first time in its history the Institute will hold a meeting in the State of Arizona. A few years ago Arizona stood third in the copper-producing districts of the United States. Since that time, with the development of porphyry mines, the output has gone up with great rapidity until it not only is the leading district, but its output at the present time is at the rate of nearly double the Montana output, which now stands second in the list. In connection with this .development, most interesting departures have been made in methods -of mining, concentration and smelting. Principles of mining and metallurgy of the greatest interest will be covered by papers which will' appear in the Bulletin and be presented at Technical Sessions, while ample opportunity will be afforded for those who go to the meeting to see all the points of interest .to them. In addition, members will be well rewarded by the marvelous natural features to be seen on the trip, including 'the petrified forests, the cliff dwellings on the Apache Trail and the Grand Canyon of Arizona. IN any line of human activity logical handling requires an amount of attention to each phase that is in keeping with the importance of that phase. In the complex and rapidly changing field of modern ferrous metallurgy it is difficult to allot the proper degree of attention to the various subjects, and it is not surprising that one or more subjects of major importance should for a time be neglected. Bessemer steel is a good example of a neglected subject. It is largely taken for granted, inferior physical quality is assumed for it, and there is a lack of interest in its technical development and commercial application. Availability of supply is limited. In spite of this technical indifference, limited source and lack of commercial exploitation, bessemer steel con-stitutes a large volume of tonnage in daily use. There is a fairly prev-alent idea even among technical people that bessemer steel survives mostly because of low cost and by reason of a dwindling residue of applica-tions sufficiently common to permit of its use. The difference in cost between bessemer and open-hearth steel is governed largely by the relative cost of manufacture of pig iron and the market price of steel scrap. During the past four years there have been long periods of time during which the price of steel scrap was low enough so that open-hearth steel was considerably lower in manufacturing cost than bessemer. As to application, it may be pointed out that thousands of tons of this material in the form of bessemer screw steel are applied for moving parts in automotive and other equipment. Some forging work and considerable heat treating, particularly carburizing, is performed on this grade.
