The term "survival" in the title means the preservation of a society in which men are free from the political and economic restraints that characterize totalitarian systems, be they communist, socialist or facist. It means the ability to withstand the enemy's offensives in the fields of propaganda, commercial competition and, if necessary, war. The temptation to substitute "victory" for "survival" is great but a realistic appraisal of the creeping socialism and demagoguery that pervade our time indicates that we may have to be content with survival in status quo. "Mineral strength" means assurance that adequate supplies will be available to meet all the contingencies of cold and hot wars. The overall mineral position of the U. S. viewed in the light of these premises is far from secure. It is true that we are the leading producing and consuming nation of the world, but the Soviet Union is gaining and the Sino-Soviet Bloc confronts us with a sobering potential. The emergence of the Common Market in Europe as an economic and political unit places a third independent entity into the competition. Our total mineral output continues on an up- ward trend but the reverse is true in certain strategic commodities. Moreover, consumption is moving ahead faster than production so that there is increasing dependence on imports which has significant adverse geopolitical connotations. There is widespread belief that our resources can at least maintain present levels of self-sufficiency during this critical period in world history, but social dreamers, the labor monopoly, and trade and taxation policies have discouraged aggressive activity in exploration and development, and access to essential foreign sources is threatened by a variety of circumstances. Our stockpiles, belatedly built up to achieve minimum protection against shortages in time of war, are under. political attack and threatened with partial destruction on the basis of what are at best uncertain assumptions regarding the new: look of global warfare.

Both doped and undoped tungsten single crystals exhibit hardness anisotropy with respect to the direction of testing in each of the crystallographic phes investigated. The hardness anisotropy of undoped single-crystal tungsten is rather pronounced in (001) and (110) planes but very minor in (111) planes. The anisotropy in (122) planes of the doped and drawn tungsten after recrystallization is in accordance with a previously published concept of a stringlike distribution of the doping material in the metal. ANISOTROPY in mechanical properties of single-crystal tungsten was investigated by Rose et al., Garlick and Probst,2 and Beardmore and Hull. 3 Although data on the Vickers microhardness of tungsten have been published (see, e.g., Boosz 4 and the references cited by him), no data on the microhardness anisotropy are available. We report, therefore, some of our own results on the microhardness and its anisotropy. The microhardness has been determined of the following samples. A) Polycrystalline tungsten samples taken from: 1) powder metallurgical tungsten "normally" doped with potassium-silicon-aluminum oxides (final contents inppm: K, 100; Si, 100; Al, 20; Cr, 20; Fe, 50; Mo, 400; Ni, 10) and in the form of: a) a 10-mm-diam swaged ingot annealed at 1600°C, the grain sizes varying between 15 and 250 p; b) a sheet rolled at about 800°C and recrystallized at 2000°C7 the grain sizes varying between 15 and 150 p; c) a 2-mm-diam swaged rod, as-worked, with elongated grains (average diameter of about 25 , lengths up to 1 mm); 2) undoped electron-beam-melted tungsten with very large grains (contaminations in ppm: K < 10; Fe < 20; Cr < 10; Cu < 0.1; Ni not detectable; inter-stitial~ not determined). B) Single-crystal samples taken from: 1) pure tungsten grown on a Pintsch wire by the van Arkel procedure (main contaminations inppm: Mo, 100; Si < 10; Cu and Fe, 2; A1 < 2; interstitials not determined); 2) zone-melted undoped tungsten (analysis as under A2); 3) large crystals in secondary recrystallized tungsten

Shales containing "kerogen," or bituminous matter, which on destructive distillation yield oily and tarry matters resembling petroleum are here designated as oil-shales. They differ from oil-bearing shales from which petroleum may be obtained by so-called mechanical means. The educts obtained by the destructive distillation resemble some or all the varieties of petroleum, depending on the character of the shale and the mode of treatment. Some shale oils have a paraffin base, some an asphaltic base, or a combination; some run high in sulfur compounds. The methods of refining and cracking, therefore, are essentially the same as are used in refining petroleums. In 1860, in this country, over fifty companies were successfully distilling various natural bituminous materials for the production of " coal oil," used for illuminating purposes. The discovery of petroleum and the failure of these companies to save and utilize the valuable byproduct, ammonia, brought about their inevitable doom. Prior to that time, more or less successful efforts were made to produce from the shales of Scotland oils for illuminating and heating purposes. Competition of native petroleum from the United States early eliminated some of these companies and with the entrance of oil from the Russian and other fields into the world&apos;s markets, the Scottish oil-shale industry underwent serious and trying experiences until, in 1916, only four (Scottish) were paying concerns. These survived only through energy and the application of skill in saving valuable byproducts. A few companies have successfully operated in France and New Zealand. The Canadian Government showed active interest in the New Brunswick shales, which exist in quantity and are more valuable than the Scottish shales. The retarded development of that valuable asset of the Province of New Brunswick was most unfortunate, especially when the product was so much needed in the prosecution of the war. I HAVE read ill the Bulletin (May, &apos;1914) a paper by H. von Höfer relating to the Origin of Petroleum, in which the author supports his and Engler&apos;s views, expressed before, of the organic origin of petroleum. Von Höfer pronounces strongly against the hypothesis of the volcanic origin of hydrocarbons, as particularly advocated by Eugene Coste. In Mr. Coste&apos;s articles, so well known by the public, he refers incidentally to our Mexican oil occurrences, especially of the Gulf coast, as proofs of the volcanic origin of the oils. This belief comes from the fact that, in our Mexican oil fields of the east coast, the majority of the producing wells are located near volcanic necks (remnants of small volcanoes, mainly of the explosive type), or near certain gibbosities in shales, resembling mounds, some of which&apos; are really uplifts due to volcanic forces or to abortive eruptions. The first attempt to explain the oil coming up around volcanic necks in Mexico, was made by me in a small article1 published in 1905, soon after the investigation ordered by the Mexican government as to the outlook of the Mexican Gulf coast as a future oil producer. When E. L. Doheny of Los Angeles, Cal., and I located the first producing well of Mexico, I was also the first to predict the great future of the oil industry in Mexico, just at the time when the government and some Mexican geologists felt rather pessimistic. The Mexican investors and the general public, as a result of these discouragements, did not pay attention to this important source of common wealth until recent days. The realization of the value of this source of wealth has been so sudden that we are menaced by the consequences brought about by a great boom. It was quite impossible, about five years ago, to induce Mexican capitalists to invest money in oil lands. So the few large foreign companies operating since the beginning, easily secured large holdings, in spite of the trouble frequently resulting from faulty titles or ownership.

WHEN examining a coal property it is customary for the engineer to take channel samples at several coal faces. In doing so the extraneous matter, or partings, which can be removed by hand, or mechanically, with the facilities at hand, or proposed, is rejected. Where there is doubt concerning a stratum it is usually rejected from the main sample but part is taken for separate analysis. The samples are forwarded to a chemist for proximate analyses and determination of British thermal units, and, sometimes, ash fusion. Consideration is given all available commercial analyses but frequently the owner presents only the favorable ones. From the results thus obtained a general evaluation is made, monies are loaned or expended, markets are determined, and realization is estimated. In many instances, such grades are not substantiated and it is time we looked deeper for a basis which will prove more practical. Institute committees are working hard on analytic and use classifications and much valuable information has already been assembled and distributed. However, no single grade can be applied to any particular bed or region. Much study has been given the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, yet that bed is subject to material differences in a single section; i. e., some strata of a face may differ from others in structure and analysis, particularly in sulfur content. From some localities it yields a good carbonization fuel, while in others it is chemically unfit for such use. Traveling south to the Logan, W. Va., field we find the Cedar Grove (Island Creek) seam a hard, gray splint coal. In the same field, and not far distant, the same bed changes, both structurally and chemically, and consists of excellent gas coal. In Illinois the moisture content of a bed may vary greatly in different localities. We have seen mines in which part of the coal is excellent for special purpose use but is spoiled by the product from another part of the same mine.

On the 19th December, 1833, a patent was granted to F. W. Geisenheimer, for smelting iron ore with anthracite. In his claim he says: " Sixthly, though I cannot, and do not, claim an exclusive right of the use of heated air, for any kind of fuel, nevertheless I believe to have a right to claim the use of heated air, applied upon, and in connection with, the said principle and manner discovered by me, to smelt iron ore in blast-furnaces with anthracite coal, by applying a blast of air in such quantity, velocity, and density, or under such pressure, as the compactness, or density, and the continuity of the anthracite requires, as above amply and fully described and illustrated." Dr. Geisenheimer made experiments in smelting iron ore with anthracite at the Valley Furnace, near Pottsville, but he failed to carry out to good practical results the principles enunciated in his patent. In the .Joozcrnal of the Franklin Institute for February, 1838, a communication was published that was made by Mr. George Crane, of the Yniscedwyn Iron Works, South Wales, to the British Association, in September, 1837. On the smelting of iron with anthracite coal, Mr. Crane states therein, that he began the use of anthracite with hot-blast on the 7th February, 1837, in a cupola blastfurnace, 41 feet high, and 10 feet across the boshes ; product, 34 to 36 tons a week. Mr. Crane goes on to say, "It may not be uninteresting to be informed in what matter the idea first occurred to me of applying a heated blast to anthracite coal. One evening, after I had placed a piece of it upon my parlor fire (which had before been made up with bituminous coal), arid had allowed it to arrive at a red heat, upon applying as fierce a blast to this piece of coal as I could raise from a pair of bellows, I noticed a black spot or mark

An item of considerable importance to the producers of pig-iron is the disposition of the slag or cinder from the blast-furnace; and various plans have been adopted at different works to care for the rapid accumulation of this generally waste material. The charge per ton of iron made which must be allowed for the care of cinder is sufficient in times of business depression to give plants having facilities for disposing of their slags an advantage over others less favorably arranged, and to allow iron to be produced profitably in the one case and prevent a profit in the other. The varied methods employed and the means of conveyance utilized need not be detailed. It is sufficient to say that the large outputs of American blast-furnaces, and consequent rapidly augmenting dump-piles, have brought into general favor the use of cars carrying the slag in a liquid condition. The advantages of this method are the prompt removal of the slag, the reduced space occupied by the dump-piles, and the facility of converting the slag into such forms for use as may be desired. The progress in iron-manufactlire is also marked by a more general adoption of methods by which molten metal is carried in vessels away from the point of its production; and, anticipating the prospective advance in pig-iron manufacture, it does not seem unreasonable to prophesy the early abolition of casting-houses at blastfurnaces, particularly where several are grouped together; or the casting of steel ingots away from the converters or furnaces. In some large blast-furnace plants, the iron is carried molten from the blast-furnaces to the converters or other furnaces. Even where it is cast into pigs, casting-sheds removed from the immediate vicinity of the furnace-stack would, perhaps, be superior to casting in beds in front of the furnaces. The idea of casting-sheds appears to present the following advantages : 1st. INTRODUCTION Roll front uranium has unique geologic characteristics (L,) which require specialized mining procedures. Roll front uranium occurs in arkosic sandstones with the ore zone typically less than 100 feet in thickness with up to 400 feet of overburden. The areal extent of ore is often a few thousand acres. Within the ore zone, ore grade material occurs in C and S shaped rolls, which are a few feet in width and height but may run laterally for several hundred feet. Since the total mine plan may include mining all ore, a roll front uranium mine may cover a few thousand acres. For both economic and environmental reasons, a roll front deposit is mined as a series of phases or sub-pits (3, 4) as illustrated in Figure 1. A typical sub-pit is 400 to 500 feet across. Sub-pit 1 is stripped initially and the overburden is spoiled on the surface. Depending on haul distance and overburden characteristics, stripping is done with trucks and shovels (or front-end loaders) or scrapers. When ore is encountered in sub-pit 1, mining begins, and the stripping equipment is moved to sub-pit 2, with sub-pit 2 overburden also being spoiled on the surface. When ore is encountered in sub- pit 2, sub-pit 1 mining should ideally be complete so the mining equipment can move to sub-pit 2 and sub-pit 3 overburden can be spoiled in the mined out sub-pit 1 area. Ore is mined selectively in a series of 12 to 24 inch cuts by a 2-1/2 yard backhoe on the basis of radiometric probing. For effective drainage, ditches must be maintained on the boundary of sub-pits, and mining lifts are kept as level as possible, with the orebody slightly elevated as part of general good mining practice. Waste removal in the ore zone is done by self- loading scrapers near the orebodies and by push-pull or push loaded scrapers away from the orebodies. Each self-loading scraper cut is

IN view of the immense amount of attention that silicosis has received in this country in the past few years, it is timely to review the status of the silicosis problem at present. Who gets silicosis? The individual exposed to the inhalation of free silica dust. The effects upon the individual depend upon the amount of silica inhaled or, in other words, the severity of exposure, rather than upon any special variation or susceptibility among those exposed. A considerable amount of study has been given to determine what may be the role of predisposing causes in the development of silicosis. To mention one instance, at the Picher Clinic careful records were kept of all previous illnesses of the men examined as well as abnormalities present at the time of examination. Examinations of over 27,000 miners were made during the years the clinic was conducted under governmental auspices-a very fair sized sample. The general conclusions from all this work were that the incidence of silicosis is not appreciably influenced by racial, structural, or other inherent qualities; it is influenced by acquired defects-particularly as these affect the lungs. That is to say, the average run of human beings respond similarly to similar exposures to silica dust and those whose lungs are already impaired by tuberculosis or other pulmonary disease acquire silicosis more readily than those with healthy lungs. It may well be, and there is some clinical evidence in support, that negroes acquire silicosis more readily than do whites, but the infection factor has not been so carefully studied among negroes exposed to silica as it has among whites. We know that tubercle infection is more prevalent among negroes than among whites. There may be other factors concerned in the development of silicosis in negroes as compared to whites, but there is not available information upon which to base positive statements. Experience has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorina-tion-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave: Fe,O,, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO,, 0.75; ZuCO,, 4; A1,0,, 3.20; H,O, 0.7 ; SiO, and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size—a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

GAYLER, Teddington, England (written discussion).-At the National Physical Laboratory, the writers have made a number of researches on the relation between the constitution and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of various types; the results obtained were in good general agreement with those of the authors. The writers, however, did not think that increasing the copper content of sand-cast low-copper duralumin to 4 per cent. necessarily caused a drop in the elongation to 1.5 per cent., as stated on page 9. In the case of sand-cast copper-aluminium alloys they had obtained much greater elongation, in some cases as great as 13 per cent. in heat-treated castings. For example, in a sand casting containing 3.5 per cent. of copper, a strength of 12 tons per square inch and an elongation of 13 per cent. were obtained; in a casting containing 4.5 per cent. copper, a tensile strength of 13 tons, and an elongation of 9 per cent. were obtained. These values were the maximum; the elongation varied considerably, being as low as 5 per cent. in some cases. In the writers&apos; opinion, such variations are due more to unsoundness in the sand casting than to any other cause.

WHEN the new sulphide plant started to roll at Chuquicamata last July, we broached the matter of looking in on this historic event to Burr Wheeler, then executive vice president of Chile Exploration Co. (Chilex executive offices are housed with the parent company, Anaconda, at 25 Broadway which is 23 hours and 15 minutes closer to the AIME office than the mine, counting air and automobile travel). Mr. Wheeler was at Chuqui when they turned the first shovelful of earth, has an understandable pride and affection in the mine, and kindly offered to make all arrangements. As a guest of Chilex, physical exam, injections, police clearance, passport, and airline reservations on the crack Panagra airline are procured swiftly and almost painlessly. Winter clothes were advised by Mr. Wheeler and D. M. Dunbar, who is the former&apos;s assistant and a seasoned Chuqui-ite. Both of these gentlemen obviously prefer Chuqui climate, with 364 days of sunshine, 1 ½ -in. rainfall, rare atmosphere of 10,000 ft elevation, Christmas-time earthquakes, and howling winds through June and July to the vicissitudes of New York weather. Panagra&apos;s de luxe DC-6 noses in toward land at Antofagasta, Chile, the supply and embarkation port for Chuquicamata. The Coastal Range, completely barren of green, thrusts a spur far out into the Pacific creating a crescent-shaped and protected harbor at Antofagasta. Beach gives way to pampa, to hills, and the only variation in scenery is in topographic relief. Chilex&apos;s reception committee in the person of the alert and amiable Bob Condit, assistant port agent, takes care of everything: immigration, interviews by the local press, baggage, transportation, and introduction to Chilean cuisine. The drive up to Chuqui takes about three hours, on the only two lane highway in northern Chile; hard surfaced, with a few kilometers of repair work in progress. We were fortunate to make the trip with manager Charles Brinckerhoff, who arrived the same day at Antofagasta from the seat of government at Santiago where he goes frequently to keep in touch with the company&apos;s Santiago office.

THE derivation of the word tire (or tyre, as it is spelled in England) is obscure. Some dictionaries suggest that it is the aphetic form for "attire, covering," so called as being the outside covering or band of a wheel; also as a corruption of "tier," the band which holds, or "ties," the rest of the wheel together. One dictionary states: "The supposed derivation of the word is that bands were first used on wheels in the City of Tyre, Syria. " In the infancy of railroads, the tracks consisted of flat baits of iron, spiked or bolted to the upper surfaces of longitudinal timbers, which; in turn, rested upon masonry foundations. Stone blocks installed for this purpose on the old Germantown & Norristown Railroad, now the Chestnut Hill branch of the Philadelphia & Reading Railway, were to be seen for many years on the right-of-way, north of what is now. Wayne Junc-tion, Philadelphia, Pa. The "cornerstone" of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was laid Apr. 4, 1828, and the first locomotive in America was built by Peter Cooper at the St. Clair Works, Baltimore, Md., in 1829 "to demonstrate its adaptability to a curved road." It is believed that the first successful locomotive was built in Philadelphia by Tyler & Baldwin in 1832 for the Germantown & Norristown Railroad. Rufus Tyler-and Matthias Baldwin were brothers-in-law; the latter&apos;s name will he identified with American locomotives until locomotives are forgotten. The Wheels on these first locomotives, designed to run on this primitive rail, were shod with plain iron bands, bent and welded. The flanges consisted. of separate iron bands, bent sidewise, welded, and, bolted to the sides of the wooden follies, or rings. Before many years had elapsed the tires were fabricated of iron bands, rolled in one, piece with the flange projection on the side. The tire for each wheel was bent and welded and subsequently attached to the wheel center by shrinkage, bolts, rivets and various mechanical devices.

The Ruth orebody, so far developed, is roughly oval in plan, major and minor axes about 1600 ft. (457 m.) and 1200 ft. (365 m.) respectively, average thickness about 120 ft. (36 m.), and with a general dip of about 15" to the northwest. According to the generally accepted theory, the ore is a secondary enrichment of the porphyry due to leaching in situ by meteoric waters. Copper occurs as chalcocite, chalcocite coating pyrite, and a little chalcopyrite. The leached zone, or capping, covering the ore varies in thickness from 110 to 540 ft. (33 to 164 m.), average about 410 ft. (124 m.). The ore is blue gray in color, and the capping, light yellow to brown. Ore was first discovered in quantity in the workings from the Ruth shaft, now caved. Further development work was done by churn drills, and the outline of the orebody, as stated above, determined in this manner. Drilling is still being carried on. The porphyry area is entirely surrounded by sedimentaries, limestones, and shales; and, in so far as the underground workings have shown, the porphyry itself, the sedimentaries&apos; near the contact, and the country underlying the ore (igneous or sedimentary) is very soft, heavy, and in places swelling ground. All openings have to be carefully and stoutly timbered, and, after once driven, they have to be constantly eased off and repaired. The mine Is at present served by two shafts, the Star Pointer, the main working shaft, a vertical, and the Ingersoll, an incline used for waste and material. The two shafts are about 2600 ft. (792 m.) apart, connected on the 500 level; a connection is now being driven on the 600 level. (Dec., 1917. This connection is now completed.) The 300 level, which is finished, and the 400 level which is nearly completed, are accessible only from the Ingersoll and connections with the 500 level. The 300 level was developed for and mined by the shrinkage stope system, similar to that used successfully in the Ray Consolidated property.

It is desired in these notes to record a vein-phenomenon certainly unique in the writer&apos;s limited experience, and, as it seems to him, sufficiently rare to be worthy of mention. In the little mining camp of Forbestown, situated in the Sierra Nevada of California, it was announced one day, when the miners of the Cold Banks mine came off shift, that "washed gravel" had been struck on the 265-foot level. To those acquainted with that section and the character of the mine (a gold-bearing quartz-vein) this was a somewhat startling announcement; for, prolific as the State is, we are not in the habit of mixing up promiscuously our vein- and placer-deposits. However, the statement proved to have some foundation. The mine is located at an altitude of about 2700 feet, on the brink of one of the great canyons of erosion characteristic of the drainage of this range. A lateral ravine cuts the vein at right angles, thus making its general strike approximately parallel to the canyon at this point, and with a variable dip of from 20 to 40 degrees towards the canyon. The strong, well-defined vein, often 20 feet wide and more, presents nothing to distinguish it particularly from scores of others in the State, unless if be considered peculiar in the highly crystalline character of its quartz and the nature of the enclosing country-rock, which is metamorphic in the extreme, very hard, devoid of lamination, and in bedding so obscure that it might easily pass—at least on superficial examination—for one of the basic eruptives. Near by in the district can be found a series of slates common to the gold-belt of this range, and within the limit of the company&apos;s property is an intrusion of an acid eruptive. On an adjoining claim a granite shows itself. The mine is opened through an inclined shaft sunk on the vein. The ore carries both free gold and sulphurets, the greater part of its value

The amount of published literature in the field of mechanical properties of magnesium alloys is not great; particularly with respect to rolled alloys. Haughton and Prytherchl have summarized most of the articles to 1937, including their own work on sheet. Although many papers can be found dealing with the technology of magnesium and the alloys now in commercial use, there does not seem to be any work dealing exclusively with the variation in properties of rolled alloys as caused by changes in alloy composition. Comparison of published data reveals considerable discrepancies in properties of alloys of the same composition, probably due to differences in the details of working and heat-treating followed by different workers. The purpose of this paper is to study the properties of alloys in conditions where the effects of such differences have been eliminated. It is well known that the strength and ductility of metals are functions of the working and heat-treating they have received, as well as of their chemical composition. In comparing alloys with respect to these properties, therefore, all possible combinations of the variables of the fabrication procedure ought to be carried out on each alloy. One or more of these treatments mill produce the highest ductility, or strength, or both. These highest properties would then be selected as characteristic of each alloy, and alloys would be compared on the basis of those properties. Thus a separation of the effect of composition and that of workiiig and heat-treating would be achieved. In this paper, however, a compromise with completeness has been made by carrying out a restricted number of treatments. As a consequence, the properties obtained are not necessarily the best that the alloy is capable of exhibiting; but since all alloy3 have been treated by the same method, the results ought to be comparable. The elements selected for the study comprise a class that will alloy easily with magnesium, and that are reblatively cheap. Each was added in different amounts, up to a limit that varied with the element.

Interest in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.l At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,² some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,³ of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,* of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. PUMICE and pumice are varieties of volcanic ejecta formed from lavas of the more silicic types. Chemical analyses of pumice, pumicite and perlite, from which synthetic pumice is now produced, will generally fall within the limits 65 to 75 pct silica, 9 to 20 pct alumina, less than 8 pct combined alkalies (sodium and potassium oxides), less than 3 pct calcium and magnesium oxide, less than 3 pct iron oxide, with smaller amounts of manganese, titanium, phosphorus and other oxides. Perlite is characterized chemically by having, in addition to the percentages of oxides given above, as high as 6 pct combined water. PROPERTIES Pumice is a natural silicic foam glass produced by volcanic eruptions. The molten glass foam, upon rapid cooling, trapped the steam and volcanic gases that caused it to remain extremely porous and vesicular in structure. Pumice is found in the form of large lumps several cubic feet in volume and also in grains only a few millimeters in diameter. Chemically, pumicite is of the same range of composition as pumice. The distinction between pumice and pumicite is one of particle size; the coarser materials are pumice; the fine particles, an appreciable percentage of which is in the range of 100 to 325-mesh or finer, are pumicite. If the erupting volcano ejects a silicic lava containing much gas and water vapor, the sudden release of pressure tends to free the gas. The viscosity of the lava, its rate of cooling and the amount of gas evolved, all have part in determining the degree of expansion of the glassy particles and the fineness of the vesicle. If the lava is of the correct viscosity and there is not too much gas, a pumice may be formed. Large amounts of gas may cause complete disruption into pumicite.30 In 1916, Barbour gave the name "pumicite" to the volcanic ash of Nebraska and since then the name has been widely used in industrial circles for the finer-grained commercial varieties. This paper deals primarily with the advantages realized from the adoption of methods more suitable than those previously used. The improvements noted include: (1) modification of practice in shrinkage stoping, (2) use of sublevel caving over grizzlies, (3) improved haulage and loading, (4) use of contract wages wherever possible. The Washington mine is on Jonestown Hill, one mile south of Oxford, in northwestern New Jersey. It is producing 16,000 tons of concentrates a month, which are being shipped to the Alan Wood Steel Company&apos;s furnaces at Swedeland, Pennsylvania. History The first settlement in this region is reported to have been in 1735, and the magnetite ores were recognized immediately. The first furnace, built in 1741, began operation in 1743. During the Revolutionary War the output was chiefly used for making cannon balls, which, owing to the sympathies of the community, without doubt found their way into the hands of the British. This old furnace is still standing. Several important veins were soon developed, including the Martin, Strayley, McKinley, Adelaide, Welsh and Lanning. Mining was carried to a depth corresponding to the capacity of the pumps available. When these became inadequate, the workings were abandoned, and another vein was opened up. The Washington vein was probably discovered about 1850, and the first shaft started in 1854. In 1879, William H. Scranton made the first complete magnetic survey of the district and serious exploration of the deposit was begun. Rather indifferent success attended the earlier efforts of the many companies that attempted to mine and smelt the ore. In 1929 the property was leased by the Warren Foundry and Pipe Co. to the present operators, and the modification of practice then inaugurated is described in this paper. Geology These veins, like most eastern deposits of magnetite, are formed from, or are contemporaneous with, pegmatite intrusions into a gneissic country rock.
