ONE of the few students to enter the world's first department of ceramic engineering a few years after its establishment at Ohio State University, A. F. Greaves-Walker has since established an international reputation in that field. Before accepting his present position as professor and head of the department of ceramic engineering at the State College unit of the University of North Carolina, Dr. Greaves-Walker spent twenty years in the ceramic and mining industries in Kentucky, Utah, Ohio, Alabama, Ontario, Pennsylvania, and Georgia successively, holding the positions of chief chemist, mining engineer, chief engineer, sales engineer, chief of research, production manager, and finally vice-president. This industrial experience resulted in his building up one of the outstanding departments of its kind in the country.

"The cleanliness and system evidenced in the accompanying photographs of the West Steward change-house will appeal to all mine operators. This design is the most efficient in use at Butte. It is the standard which will probably be used in Butte in all future construction and is the result of a long period of investigation and experimenting. It is important that such a structure be as nearly fire-proof as possible, because of the frequent fires originating within the lockers from matches, etc., in the men's clothes. The concrete floors permit the thorough washing of the building whenever necessary.The lockers are roomy and well ventilated. The figures on enrollment in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada indicate that the total number of students in these schools for the current year, 1949-50, is about 10% less than it was a year ago. This year, 226,533 undergraduates and graduate students are studying engineering in the United States and Canada as compared with 249,913 students last year. With today's technological advances in mineral processing equipment, there is an increasing demand for accurate system control. This can only come about through representative sampling. The purpose of this paper is to guide in the selection of sampling equipment and outline design parameters for the cutters used in dry and wet sampling without adding redundant mathematical probability formulas. Special attention will also be given to the equipment used in conjunction with samplers and sampling system, such as feeders, crushers, chutes, launders, and controls.

The Free World's largest uranium reserves are in the United States. Almost 97% of the U.S. uranium reserves occur in irregular shaped sandstone formations, widely disseminated in coarse clastic sediments that are mostly of Jurassic or Tertiary age. Without doubt, the most important deposits are located in the sandstone formations of the Ambrosia Lake district of New Mexico, near the sun-scorched town of Grantswhose proud alias, as given by the city fathers, is "The Uranium Capital of the World."

THE growth of the spirit of progress and mutual aid which motivated the founders of the Institute sixty years ago in Wilkes-Barre was vigorously demonstrated at the sixtieth anniversary meeting held there on May 22. Committees headed by Cadwallader Evans, "resident director" of the Institute, and Paul Sterling, chairman of the local section, had arranged for a full-day tour of the northern anthracite field, so that the hundred and fifty members and guests who had come for the celebration of the anniversary might see the changes and progress made in that field in recent years. More than forty automobiles were in line in the cavalcade which left the Westmoreland Club at nine- thirty. Operations visited were fully described in the May issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, so it is enough to say that after a seventy-five mile drive through the beautiful Susquehanna Valley and over the rolling green hills of northern Pennsylvania a stop was made for lunch at Forest City. Carey, Baxter and Kennedy, contractors at the stripping operations there, had provided, in the shelter of tents, a well-prepared luncheon and other refreshments. The return trip was made by way of Scranton, arriving at Wilkes-Barre at five- thirty.

THE important advances that have been made of recent years in mining and milling methods and in mechanical equipment at mines need no re- telling, but there has been a remarkable growth in one type of equipment which has gone nearly unnoticed. That is the increasing use of storage-battery locomotives underground. Since the war the number of these locomotives and their field of use have increased tremendously; their growing acceptance represents an al- most complete reversal of opinion from an earlier period when they were generally looked upon as in- adequate for the strain of mine service. At the time when storage-battery powered units were first making their bid for recognition, the use of power in haulage had already passed through several phases; hand tramming, rope haulage, compressed air locomotives, even gasoline locomotives, had all been used, ending finally in the general adoption of the electric trolley locomotive for practically all power-haulage requirements. It was, and is, conceded that the trolley loco- motive met more adequately the varied and severe conditions of mine service than any previous type of haul- age unit. Subsequent developments have had to endure comparison and surpass in performance that type of haulage before changes would be considered.

EDWIN LUDLOW, the 41st President of the A. I. M. E., died in Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 10, 1924, after a brief illness of influenza followed by pneumonia. He was born in Oakdale, Long Island, N. Y., March 12, 1858, a son of William Handy and Louise (Nicoll) Ludlow, attended Flushing (L. I.) Institute 1868-75: and Columbia School of Mines (N. Y.) where he graduated with the degree of Engineer of Mines with the Class of 1879. After graduation his first employment was as assistant engineer in river and harbor work on the Delaware River near Philadelphia. In 1881 he went to Mexico as one of the engineers on the Mexican Central Railroad, then building from Laredo, Texas, to Mexico City. The road being in financial difficulties he returned to the United, [states, and shortly thereafter was made superintendent of the Union Coal Co.'s collieries located in the western middle anthracite field, between Shamokin and Mt. Carmel. Ludlow and Arthur H. Storrs, then superintendent of the Neilson Shaft Colliery, in Shamokin, were known throughout that section as the baby superintendents, both under 25 years of age. WITH the great expansion currently being made in the aluminum output of the United States, not only by the company that has heretofore been the sole producer but by a now organization in the field it is only natural to wonder to what degree the; ore reserves of the United States can contribute to the growing consumption. For the three-year period 1937-'39 the U.S. Bureau of Mine's figures indicate that the annual domestic production of bauxite averaged about 370,000 long tons, compared with average, annual import of about 194,000 long tons. About 85 per cent of the imports came from Surinam, nearly all of which went into aluminum manufacture. Not all of the or -kipped from mines in the United States is used to make alumimun however as Bureau figures indicate that in these three years an average of only 48 per cent of the domestic ore shipment were so used the abrasive chemical and other industries taking respectively 27, 21, and 4 per cent of the output. THE wide scope of the causes and effects of ground movement and their interrelation to various kinds of mining and geological conditions are not always understood. Minimizing of roof movement by selection of suitable mining methods is closely allied to the problem of obtaining maximum safety in mining, but there are other questions involved: for example, mechanical developments which increase the production of ore and other minerals per shift or unit of labor but which, though highly ingenious, may increase hazards. More- over, the newer mobile loaders need much space for operation with longer protecting roof spans. Another problem emphasized by mechanization is the incompleteness of extraction of mineral, as there is no governmental requirement (except for limited leases on the public domain) in this country, as in European countries, and loss of coal in pillars is accepted by mine operators rather than risking the loss of an ex- pensive loading machine from a heavy roof fall. The extent to which losses of coal in mining are now being incurred is conjectural, for it has been fifteen years since there has been a comprehensive survey. In that study a loss of slightly over one-third of the coal in both anthracite and bituminous mining was indicated.

JAMAICA-bauxite and gypsum-but what else? J Does the Caribbean island have anything more to offer in the form of mineral wealth? One answer may be iron ore deposits which show enough promise to warrant exploitation in the near future by a company associated with Standard Ore & Alloys Corp. In addition, Jamaica is reported to have gold, silver, platinum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and a great many nonmetallic minerals. Of these, only platinum has not been produced commercially in the past. Right now, Jamaican bauxite is getting most of the publicity, but not too long ago other mining operations were in progress. Lack of proper interest, insufficient roads, and scarcity of venture capital forced those mining properties to suspend production.

In a portion of the development work being conducted, attention has been given to the development of high-strength zirconium alloys.
