The depletion of most high-grade ore reserves coupled with growing demands for metals and fuels has made it necessary to bring into production increasingly lower grade deposits. Improvements in technology have made lower grade ores economically recoverable in spite of major increases in labor and material costs and the initial investments required to open new mines and build their metallurgical and service plants. To remain competitive, managements of mining companies must keep abreast of and exploit these often complex technical developments. The proper application of these improvements in technology requires extensive and detailed study. In addition, managements of mining and other industries are becoming more deeply involved in public affairs and the myriad of other nontechnical problems common to all industries. These involvements, plus the demands of evaluating technological developments as well as the necessary work related to the routine administration of operations, have required mining managements to delegate additional study and review functions to staff services. To help overcome the problems involved in adopting the best technologies, managements have generally expanded their engineering and research staff services. Integrated, base-metal-producing companies, having open pits, concentrators, smelters, and refineries, are generally more research and engineering oriented than are most smaller mining companies and quarries. However, mining methods for even the simplest open pits and quarries are improving rapidly, and installations of these improvements are essential to combat increasing costs. Because of this, the managements of smaller operations may also require enhanced engineering staff services to realize the potential benefits.

The theory of electrophoresis is briefly outlined and an apparatus which may be used for electrophoretic studies is explained. The results obtained using this apparatus are in agreement with those obtained by other investigators. How to solve some of the complications which occur in the measurement of zero charge and zeta potential is explained. It is believed that the apparatus described in this paper will allow rapid measurements of zeta potential, zero point of charge, electrophoretic mobility and zeta coefficient. For many years the phenomenon of electrophoresis has been studied, and much work has been done in designing an apparatus for better measurements of mobility, zeta potential and zero charge of minerals. Up to the present, most electrophoresis experiments have involved cumbersome equipment and tedious microscopic observation. The modified cell proposed in this paper obviates these drawbacks by using a Rayoscope together with a special system of lenses and filters. It therefore allows a faster and more accurate measurement of zero charge and particle velocity. THEORY Most authors currently regard zeta potential as the potential difference in an otherwise uniform medium between a point some large distance from the surface of the mineral and a point on the plane of shear. Fuerstenau,1 Miaw,2 and Gaudin and sun3 have performed some calculations of zeta potential using Henry's equation.4 Their results show wide discrepancies, probably due to differences in the past histories of the minerals used. The authors have also noticed this difference on determining the zero point of charge of quartz as shown on Table I.

Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvements in production mining equipment, mining methods and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been previously improved and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effects on production are not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved.

IT has been pointed out by Cottrell' and Fisher that long-range order would produce superdis-locations, consisting of two partial dislocations separated by an out-of-phase region. The mutual repulsion of the partial dislocations is balanced by the surface tension of the out-of-phase domain boundary joining the dislocations (Fig. 1). The calculation of the equilibrium spacing of the dislocations has yet to be made. The argument uses the Bragg and Williams theory of long-range order." The metal under consideration is the A-B, body-centered type, such as ß brass. The slip system is taken to be [Ill], (110). Since nearest-neighbor interactions are considered, only the atoms position in the two (110) planes adjoining the slip plane have to be labeled. Corner sites are called a and a' in the top and bottom (110) planes, respectively. Similarly ß and ß are the body-centered sites. Thus, a and ß and 0 and a sites are nearest neighbors. Assume that the bottom plane moves and the top plane is fixed during slip; the atoms in a and ß sites exchange sites but atoms in a and ß sites remain fixed. Fraction of A atoms in a sites, for example, is given by fa and fa. for the un-slipped and slipped condition, respectively. Similarly number of A atoms in the a sites is given by n, and n'a for the unslipped and slipped condition, respectively. The effect of temperature as a parameter in ore flotation has not been systematically studied, although for some ores it has been known for many years that selectivity and grade of concentrates can be improved by conditioning or flotation at moderately or substantially elevated temperatures. In 1934 Coghill and Clemmer' stated that "elevated temperature seems to make hard water more tolerable" in soap flotation, and a cursory examination of the literature indicates that some earlier investigators were aware of beneficial results obtained by floating above room or mill-water temperatures. Tartaron,' Mitchell et al.,3 and particularly Hamilton et al." have shown that high pulp temperatures give high recovery and selectivity in soap flotation of fluorite from a variety of gangue minerals. As a result of the work of these and of other investigators, high-temperature flotation has been successfully applied to industrial flotation of fluorite. Falconer" stated: "The use of high temperature conditioning (above 35°C and preferably above 60°C) in connection with the soap flotation of nonsulphide ores, as covered in B. Kalinowski's French Patent No. 847,- 215, Dec. 7, 1938, is claimed to provide more intense activation, better separation of values from gangue, and reduction in quantity of reagents." The various investigations quoted above clearly demonstrate the improvements to be realized by increasing the temperature at which fluorite is floated, and it is surprising that little or no information has been published on systematic investigation of the same method as applied to other ores.

Vanadium has recently joined the growing list of mineral commodities being exploited by surface mining methods. Union Carbide Corp. controls several vanadium deposits in central Arkansas near the city of Hot Springs in Garland County and the community of Magnet in Hot Spring County (Fig. 1). Two open pit mines, located approximately five miles southeast of the city of Hot Springs in the Wilson Springs area, have been developed for production during the past two years. Adjacent to the mining area the company has recently completed a 1,600-ton-per-day (tpd) processing plant to treat the Wilson Springs and Magnet Cove ores (Fig. 2). Although this operation constitutes the largest vanadium mining project in the United States, the open pit mines are of moderate size. A number of small to medium-sized surface mines will be developed during the life of the operation. This chapter describes the methods and practices used to bring these recently discovered vanadium deposits into production. PRELIMINARY EXPLORATION The vanadium potential of the deposits near Hot Springs and Magnet Cove was first investigated by Union Carbide Corp. in 1960. These areas have long been of interest for their varied mineral content and were previously explored by government agencies and private interests for titanium, columbium, molybdenum, and uranium. But little has been written concerning the camp of Republic. In 1900 Chatard and Whitehead 1 reported the results of some experiments with samples of ore from the Republic mine, and a few years later Fritz Cirkel2 described the construction, operation, and results attained in the mill at the Mountain Lion mine. From time to time brief articles, mostly of a semi-technical nature, have appeared in the Engineering and Mining Journal and other mining periodicals. The general geology of the camp, especially in regard.to its areal features, has recently been ably described by Joseph B. Umpleby.3 To bring to mind the general features of the district it may perhaps be well to review briefly some facts in regard to it, before discussing the treatment of the ore. I. History and Production. The town of Republic is situated in the NW. corner of Ferry county, about 25 miles south of the International Boundary, on the head-waters of the San Poi1 river, in what was formerly the " north-half" of the Colville Indian reservation. On Washington's birthday, 1896, this portion of the reservation was thrown open to mineral location, and within a few weeks important discoveries had been made. The present Eureka mining-district was organized, the camp grew apace, and consignments of ore were shipped by wagon to Grand Forks, 30 miles away; or to Marcus, a somewhat greater distance. It is reported that the first 1,500 tons shipped from the Republic mine uetted the owners $160 per ton, after being hauled

IN a preceding paper 1 the writer has pointed out some apparent relationship between the distribution, on the Surface of the globe, of the known hydrocarbon deposits and the disposition of the principal zones of deformation of the earth's body (geosynclines). He wishes to present some further remarks on this subject. Petroleum deposits, or their derivatives or descendants, are found through the whole range of sedimentary strata, from the pre-Cambrian to the Quaternary. For instance, the pre-Beltian (Shuswap) series of the Canadian Cordillera are interbedded with limestones which are sometimes rich in carbonaceous matter (Sicamous limestone) ; and the Beltian system of the same region contains layers of argillites and dolomitic limestones which are equally high in carbon content.2 This carbon may be interpreted as the last remnant of hydrocarbons previously contained in the rocks. On the other hand, the actual formation of hydrocarbons wider conditions that would eventually permit their deposition in modern sediments is conceded by some geologists.3 Between these two extreme limits, bitumens are found indifferently in all sedimentaries. They constitute a continuous series, some kind of a large family, whose individual members may be entitled to a community of origin and probably represent the differentt stages of evolution of the primitive, parent matter. . The kinship between petroleum and such substances as asphalt, ozocerite, manjak, grahamite, albertite, etc., is well known; and E. H. Cunninggam-Craig has recently shown how intimately shale fields and oil fields are connected. For this reason, no distinction is made in the present

The Hog Mountain Mining and Milling Co. controls 1658 acres of land and is the only company operating in the district. The principal mine workings are in sections 10 and 15, T.24N., R.22E. The region has been visited by geologists many times, has been briefly described in several papers,' and mentioned in many others. No detailed map of the mine or vicinity has been published. The field work for this report was started in March, 1934, as part of the Public Works reemployment program. About a month and a half was spent mapping both the surface and underground geology. The mine owners and operators have cooperated in every way possible to facilitate the work. N. 0. Johnson, the mine engineer, E. W. Ellsworth, J. E. McCoy and J. G. Englebert have acted as assistants for part of the work. The University of Alabama and the State Geologist's office have aided materially by permitting free use of their libraries and laboratory equipment. Geography Hog Mountain forms a conspicuous ridge that rises to a height of a little more than 1000 ft. above sea level, and about 400 to 500 ft. above the adjacent country. In fact, the coast country and the islands are so heavily timbered and the surface covered with so thick a mantle of soil, muskeg, and, over broad areas, glacial drift, that prospecting and even trail breaking are extremely difficult. It is only along the coast or stream channels, or above the timber line, or where snow or rock slides have scoured the surface, that rock outcrops can be found. Glaciers nestle in many of the cirques and fill the valleys in the higher ranges. Great ice sheets and perpetual snow persist in certain localities, thus reducing the exposed areas worth prospecting. Almost the entire country has been subjected to intense glaciation, so that the conspicuous oxidized outcrops of orebodies typical of the southwestern United States and Mexico do not exist and surface bodies of enriched or oxidized ore are rare. With few exceptions, the mines1 of the Province are working primary ore. Development, have proved that some of these orebodies are large and important, although usually comparatively low in grade. Besides the few mines that have produced most of the minerals, there are many small mines, but their total output is unimportant. Considering the number of mines and prospects and the widespread mincralization, it is strange that no really great mines, comparable in sizc and richness with those in the western United States, have been found. THE fluorescence of scheelite has been an important aid in recent years in the discovery and development of scheelite deposits. The use of fluorescence of synthetic compounds in industry, particularly in advertising, also has expanded greatly during the past decade. As a result, a number of new and convenient units for producing ultraviolet energy have become available, which have led to a greater application of fluorescence in the study of minerals. Studies have shown that the fluorescent color of a mineral may vary: (I) with the kind and quantity of trace elements, and (2) with the particular wave length of ultraviolet energy used. The wave length is dependent first on the type of generating equipment used, and finally on the filter employed to remove the visible light that may be present. A number of so-called ultraviolet lamps are listed and described, together with suitable filters known to be available. Scheelite fluoresces brilliantly with wave lengths of 2200 to about 3000Å., but not with longer wave lengths. The most convenient and efficient sources of ultraviolet for scheelite fluorescence- are portable and laboratory units designed particularly for use with scheelite. So-called ultraviolet light globes of the photo-flood type emit wave lengths too long to cause scheelite to fluoresce. Attention is called to the minerals that fluoresce in a manner similar to scheelite, which necessitates a check test by means of characteristic physical properties. Chemical tests are the final authority both for identity and content of tungsten in scheelite ore.

INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of lead and zinc sulfides, often accompanied by barite and fluorite, occur in carbonate host rocks throughout central and eastern United States. So similar are the deposits in broad general characteristics that they long have been classified as Mississippi Valley type. They differ widely, however, in details such as metal ratios, age of host rock, type of ore-bearing structure, and probable time of mineralization. The theories developed to explain the source and transport of the metals are many and are known to all. The deposits have been termed telethermal on the basis of their presumably shallow occurrence and the attempt to relate the metals to the classic hydro- thermal sequence. 1t is now recognized that deposits of this type can occur at any depth; the only depth limitation is thickness of the sedimentary section. Ideas on the source of the metals also have changed, A rapidly growing body of evidence suggests that the metals were brought by concentrated brines from nearby sedimentary basins. The hypothesis preferred today by many geologists postulates that the metals were deposited during the course of normal sedimentation in depositional basins of miogeosynclinal or orthogeosynclinal type. At some time after deposition of the sediments, the metals were carried out of the basins by migrating brines; the brines moved laterally and upward into structurally high areas; they entered any reservoir-like structure, either primary or secondary in origin, that happened to be available; in this reservoir, possibly in a sulfur-rich environment, the metals were precipitated as ore minerals.

WE must begin by defining what we mean by the Copperbelt. This term is generally used to denote that region of Northern Rhodesia in which the copper mines of that territory are situated. The first published use of the term Copperbelt we have been able to trace dates back to 1905. The African World of December of that year contained an article entitled "The Great Northern Copper Belts of Rhodesia." The next reference we have traced is in 1909 in an article in the Transactions of the Geo- logical Society of South Africa. It began to be used generally in the late twenties and by 1929 was in common use to denote the region which today contains the existing large copper mines of Northern Rhodesia. The first of three accompanying maps is a very simple outline map of Africa showing where Rhodesia is within Africa, and where the Copperbelt is within Rhodesia. The second is a larger scale map of the Copperbelt itself. It will be seen that within the present Copperbelt there are six producing mines. Two of these are new and four are relatively established, having started operations between the two world wars. The Copperbelt also includes a town- ship called Ndola, which is not a mining town, but a railhead on the main line. This town has developed primarily as a result of the mining industry in the neighborhood. It describes itself as the Gateway to the Copperbelt and is shortly to become a refining center.

The slow, tedious and costly method of reducing copper matte to metallic copper in the reverberatory furnace, commonly known as the Welsh process, was displaced by the rapid and inexpensive converter process about fifty years ago. The art of refining copper was for many generations a carefully guarded secret among the Welsh furnacemen and was handed down among them from father to son. An attempt was made to apply it at Butte when the smelting of copper ore first started there but it proved too difficult and expensive under local conditions, and until the introduction of the converter process the entire output of copper was shipped to Swansea in the form of high-grade (60 per cent) matte. Before the construction of the Manhes converter, attempts had been made to reduce copper matte in the bessemer steel converter, but these failed, chiefly because the air was blown through the bottom of the vessel. The air holes became clogged with chilled copper as soon as the reduction started. Manhes partially overcame this difficulty by placing the tuyeres in the side of the vessel, some, distance above the bottom, thus allowing space beneath them for the copper to accumulate. Nevertheless the first attempts to operate such a converter at Butte were not successful, as no means had been provided for clearing away obstructions, which formed to some extent in front of the tuyeres. This difficulty was overcome by drilling holes in the outside wall of the air chamber directly opposite the holes in the shell and lining, so that these could be punched
