Discussion of the paper of EDGAR L. NEWHOUSE, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin: No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1801 to. 1806. G. C. RIDDELL, East Helena, Mont.-As nearly as I can recall at the present moment, there are only four or five large plants on the continent where the lead on charge is carried in the neighborhood of 40 per cent. These are at Herculaneum, Collinsville, and Federal, Ill.; Trail, B.. C.; and East Helena, Mont. Our object at the latter point is to smelt a maximum amount of Coeur d'Alêne lead sulphides in as compact and self-fluxing a charge as possible, and to this end we are now smelting a mixture that at times carries up to 42 per cent. lead. The monotony of producing the 7,000 tons of bullion shipped each month to. the Omaha and Chicago refineries is relieved somewhat by the fact that the 15,000 tons monthly of Coeur d'Alêne ores that are com-ing to us carry enough zinc to provide the one-half slag used with from 6.5 to 7.5 per cent. zinc clay after day. During the month of March, 1914, three lead furnaces in continous operation, each 136 in. long, averaged 249 tons per furnace clay, exclusive of coke and slag shells, which is smelting at the rate of 5.5 tons per square foot of tuyère area. Manganese deposits discovered in Maine may solve one of the problems facing the steel industry today. Diamond drilling is scheduled to start in Aroostook County to determine whether the ore is of acceptable grade. The Bureau of Mines estimates the deposit contains several hundred million tons. If true, it means about a 30-year supply. The steel industry presently imports about 90 pct of its needs. Noranda Mines, Ltd., is planning a sulphur-iron plent for Ontario's Niagara Peninsula. Although contracts have not been signed, a substantial agreement has been reached with American Cyanamid, Ltd., whereby the Noranda plant would be constructed adjacent to Cyanamid's chemical plant at an estimated cost of million. The unit would treat approximately 100,000 tons of pyrite concentrate annually. San Manuel Copper Corp., wholly-owned subsidiary of Magma Copper Co., is asking the RFC for a $111.28 million loan for development of a copper orebody in Pinal County, Ariz. The property s said to be capable of producing 10 million tons of ore annually. San Manuel plans to construct facilities for processing 30,000 tons of ore and for smelting 800 tons of concentrate daily. An Aeromagnetic map covering 120 sq miles of the Wichita Mountain area in southwestern Oklahoma indicates a possibility of iron production from titaniferous magnetite deposits of the Raggedy Mountains, northwest of Lawton. The map shows an area in the north central part of the region which may prove favorable to further development.

THE papers by G. F. Loughlin and I. A. Ettlinger discussed the distribution of formations and ore-bodies in two of the main mining districts of the Southwest. The convergence of the deeper orebodies at Cripple Creek points to their common hypogene ori-gin, as do the occurrences of the copper ores of, central Arizona. E. L. Bruce described the areas in southwestern On-tario around Red Lake and Woman Lake, another prom-ising gold district. Of special interest was a series of lantern slides showing the use of power-driven boats and of hydroplanes as means of transportation. Within a few years, no doubt; such devices will revolutionize the mining industry and reconnaissance mapping in these relatively inaccessible areas. Much interest was evinced in the paper by J. W. Finch on "Sedimentary Metalliferous Deposits of the Red Beds." It was written as a caution to people at-tempting to mine these deposits. The discussion of the chemical equations presented in the paper brought out the fact that a large amount of study of such ores is necessary before we shall be able to write equations to explain their formation. Especially pertinent were the discussions by David White as to the relation of decay-ing plant tissue to metalliferous deposits and the color of sediments; also the point brought out by T. S. Lover-ing that chemical compounds produced by bacteria may greatly affect the deposition and reorganization of sedi-mentary metalliferous deposits.

Discussion of the paper of Herbert F.. Miller, Jr., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 409 to 413. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J.:-Looking at the illustrations, it seems to me that a furnace made with the width of port that is shown here would not be a good working furnace. The economy of brick and gas might be all right, but I do not think it would melt the steel properly. I should say that the flame would not spread out suitably to fill the whole hearth of the furnace, and there would be undue waste, and it seems to me that it would be an undesirable furnace to adopt. The question as to whether a producer-gas flame would lie down in the furnace, hugging the bottom better than the natural-gas flame, is settled, not so much by the specific gravity of the gases themselves, as by the relative temperatures at which they enter the laboratory of the furnace. We know in that case that producer gas would be lighter than a natural gas which had not been run through a regenerator and expanded four or five volumes in consequence. I would like to hear what Mr. Miller has to say about the action of the flame spreading properly over the charge to give good metallurgical results in the form of furnace which he presents.

THE present value of most coal properties resides largely in the coal remaining to be mined, which thus constitutes the most important asset. The object of this paper is to discuss methods commonly used in computing the value of mineable coal. To distinguish clearly between such coal values and the values of other property, the several kinds of property values may be divided into classes; this is necessary to avoid unintentional omissions of items of importance. VALUE OF COAL RESERVES Judicial decisions prescribe, and appraisers commonly accept, current sales value as the preferred means for determining the value of transferable property. With few exceptions a property is worth the sum that can be realized from its sale by a willing seller to a willing buyer, a sale in which compulsion urges neither party, and between whom there is no community of interest to fix a value; or it is worth at least as much as a responsible buyer will offer for it. Actual sales of like property or bids from responsible buyers for the property, or for substantially like property, are the best established methods for determining values. Only in the absence of such sales or bids can valuations by other methods be entertained, and only for reasons of weight can sales values be set aside. Sales of coal in the ground, as customarily carried out through lease, under royalty agreements, are therefore the most trustworthy means available for determining the value of coal reserves.

The fifth convention of the National Foreign Trade Council was held in Cincinnati, Apr. 18, 19 and 20. More than one thousand accepted delegates were registered, the American Institute of Mining Engineers being represented by W. L. Saunders and W. N. Thayer. The convention was called to order Thursday morning, Apr. 18, in the convention hall of the Hotel Gibson; by the Chairman, Mr. James .A. Farrel, president of the U. S. Steel Corporation, and was in continuous session for two clays, several group sessions being held simultaneously. The convention adjourned Saturday morning after receiving the report of the central committee. The dominant themes of the convention were: First, "Win the War" and second, "Establish Foreign Trade on a. Firmer Basis." The discussions included textiles, lumber, chemicals, automobiles, finance, and agriculture, and also those things in which mining engineers are particularly interested, metals, oil, and coal. The report of the central committee, which was adopted, recommended the stimulation' of production of all materials required for war purposes; the subordination of all trade that will not impose new and heavy penalties on our adversaries; the maintenance of such foreign trade as will support national credit and supply materials required for military and naval purposes; the continued interchange so far as possible of merchandise and products between the United States and. Latin-America, Asia and Oceania; the immediate increase of tonnage in the north Atlantic; the cheerful and whole-hearted cooperation of importers

INTRODUCTION The stress redistribution accompanying the excavation of a deep tunnel may induce failure of the rock. The role of the support system is to control the extent of the failed region and hence to limit closure of the tunnel within an allowable amount. In such circumstances, the design of the support system is generally based on the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC). The GRC is the relationship between the support pressure and the induced displacement at the tunnel wall for a circular tunnel under hydrostatic loading. In the calculation of the GRC (see Brown et al. (1983) for an exhaustive list of reference), the rock is generally treated as an elastoplastic material characterized by cohesive-frictional yield strength and by dilatancy during plastic deformation. A recent analytical development (Detournay, 1983) has allowed the generalization of the GRC concept for some cases of non-hydrostatic in-situ stress fields (Detournay and Fairhurst, 1982). As an application of that development, this paper describes design charts that provide powerful means of performing parametric analysis for tunnels subject to non-hydrostatic loading. BACKGROUND The in-situ stress in a plane perpendicular to the tunnel axis can be decomposed into mean and deviatoric components, Po and So (see Fig. 1). INTERMETALLIC compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dissociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous form of their solubility curves at their melting points'. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds' have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455° C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a = 6.52,b=8.60,c=4.16Å2 There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO2 = CdO + CO + Sb. From the known free energies of formation of, CdO, CO2 and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. One of the great copper-producing areas of the world is comprised of five U. S. western states and northern Sonora, Mexico. The Southwest province of this area, covering southern Arizona, south- western New Mexico, and northern Sonora, produces some 55 pct of U. S. copper output and the equivalent of 15 pct of world production. In 1956 the area produced about 550,000 tons. Tucson is approximately the center of the oval- shaped province, which measures only 300 miles on its east-west axis and about 200 miles on its short axis. Northwest of the oval, and forming a tenuous connection with the Utah and Nevada copper fields, is an important operating mine, Bagdad, and also the now inactive United Verde. Along its north- south axis, running from Globe, through Tucson, to Nogales, ten moderate to major copper properties have been discovered or revived during the past 15 years, and five of these in only the past seven years. The latter five properties lie in an area 25 miles in diameter, centering 20 miles south of Tucson. In order of discovery, or revival, they are: Banner's Mineral Hill and Daisy; Cyprus et al's Pima; Duval's Esperanza; Asarco's East Pima (now called Mission mine) ; and Lewisohn's Peach. Total tonnage is estimated at about 250 million tons averaging some 0.90 pct Cu, but ultimate production may exceed this amount since some of the reserve is open ended.

Wet dust suppression can be achieved by 1) confinement of the dust within the dust producing area with a curtain of moisture, 2) wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture or 3) the formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, or too heavy to become airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid; however, it is not as effective for dust suppression as when small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with it. Performance of dust control com pounds is related to surface active agents and surface activity. In all liquids there is an attractive force between molecules which varies inversely as the sixth power of the distance between molecules. Thus, in the liquid phase where molecules are crowded together, the intermolecular forces are powerful; whereas in the liquid-vapor phase where the molecules are relatively far apart, these forces diminish rapidly. In the body of a fluid there is an uneven distribution of forces resulting in an inward pull called surface tension. The force which keeps two surfaces apart or causes them to coalesce is termed interfacial tension. Fluids of high surface tension exhibit poor wetting, spreading and penetrating qualities. Water has the unusually high surface tension of 72.75 dynes per cm at 20°C.

RATHBUN,* Salt Lake City, Utah (written discussion?).¬While the engineer should carefully weigh the merits of the various types of equipment, he must bear in mind that the object of his plant is the recovery of suspended solids, and a thing is unimportant except as it contributes to this end, other engineering principles being duly considered. The controversy regarding the use of synchronous motor-driven rectifiers by which the power for the treater is taken directly from the mains of the local power system, rather than the motor-generator rectifier giving each treater unit its own isolated electrical system, has led many to think that on the type of rectifier depends the success of .the plant. It is in fact a relatively unimportant part of the plant and represents a very small fraction of the investment; the recoveries in dust and fume are practically the same in each case. One large smelting concern has adopted the motor-generator type for all of its plants after years of experience with the synchronous-motor type. Its reasons are practically the same as those set down by Mr. Eschholz for his preference. Given more in detail they are: 1. An independent electric system prevents outside power-line conditions, like voltage fluctuations, from interfering with the operation of the Cottrell plant and eliminates the possibility of the Cottrell plant causing trouble for the power company. Introduction. THE Georgetown mining district is located in Deerlodge county, Mont., about 20 miles west of Anaconda. It lies along the divide between the headwaters of Warm Springs creek, draining eastward, and Flint creek, flowing west and north through the Philipsburg valley. The actual divide is formed by Cable mountain, a narrow ridge running north and south, terminating to the south in low hills overlooking Georgetown lake, and to the north in a high, rugged plateau that falls off to the west to the wide valley of Flint creek. Oil the eastern, or Warm Springs, slope of Cable mountain is the Cable mine, with the Hidden Lake mine a few miles north. On the western slope is the Southern Cross group, with smaller mines, the Twilight, Cincinnati, Red Lion, and Big Bill, at intervals to the northward. The Georgetown mines lie in the hills south of Cable mountain; the Philipsburg mines, of which the Granite Mountain, Bimetallic, Hope, and Trout are the chief, form a separate group to the north, overlooking Flint Creek valley and Philipsburg. (See Fig. 1.1) The region ranges in elevation from 5,000 to 9,000 ft. It is, with the exception of the lower valleys, well timbered with small fir and pine, although Cable mountain and the higher summits to the northward rise slightly above timber line. The main valleys have the smooth contours of glaciation, and their mouths are frequently choked with morainal deposits.

The importance of making analyses of gases in furnaces which are used for metallurgical purposes is every day growing more and more evident. It is the only method of understanding the reactions that take place in the furnace, and of economically conducting the operations both with regard to the fuel used and the reactions which take place on the bodies to be subjected to the influence of the heat and gases. As a knowledge of the composition of gases is becoming every day more necessary to the proper conduct of furnace operations, it seems desirable that furnace managers should generally know that the analysis of gas for commercial purposes is neither difficult, tedious, or expensive, and that it does not necessarily imply the use of corrections requiring difficult instrumental observations and long and tedious mathematical calculations. Any method, therefore, which will tend to render these analyses simple will also tend to having them made and repeated as frequently as the analyses of the ores and other materials charged in the furnace. They should be made even more frequently, as their composition is affected by any change in the condition of the furnace, and a knowledge of their composition will give a ready clue to the unseen and otherwise not easily detected changes which are taking place. W E seem to have assumed the careless habit in recent years of treating mining geology as synonymous with exploration geology, and exploration synonymous with exploration for new deposits-to be forgetting that mining geology includes also the geologic control or guidance of day-by-day mining operation. In the publicized romantic spotlight of the search for new deposits, we forget the man with the dirty over-alls, grubbing away at the daily tasks of finding new shoots and of helping to keep production up and cost down. During 1949, as in previous years, the resident geologist continued his quiet efficient functioning while the exploration geologist continued to stay in the spotlight-although this time he shared it with what may be called the resource-appraisal geologist. Many broad problems of national import such as tax modification, the operations of the Economic Cooperation Administration, and certain international relations have come up against an unexpected factor lurking in the background, namely, appraisal of world and domestic reserves and latent resources. T. M. Broderick opened the year with his address as retiring president of the Society of Economic Geologists, wherein he analyzed the problems of exploration geology listing among them "the shortcomings of the geologists themselves, of the educators, the mining companies, our Published by permission of the Director, U. S. Geological Survey. technical publications, the Federal Survey and Bureau of Mines, and the property owners."

DURING the past ten or twelve years, the average reader of newspaper and magazine articles has been led to believe that enormous deposits of high-grade coal exist in the northland and that these can be mined for practically nothing. But much of the reputed glitter and attractiveness of Alaskan coals disappears when viewed at close range. Many areas of coal-bearing rocks are widely distributed geographically from Cape Lisburne, on Bering Sea, to Admiralty Island south of Juneau. Bituminous coal is found at Cape Lisburne, on the Bering Sea, at Five Finger Rapids on the upper Yukon, and at Herendeen Bay and Chignik Bay; lignite is found on the Kobuck River, along the Yukon River from points near the mouth to Tonakat, near Rampart, at Dawson, on the east shore of Cook Inlet, and in the Tanana Valley, 50 mi. south of Nenana. The Susitna and Matanuska Valleys contain coal ranging from lignite to anthracite, and in the Bering Lake district, there are coals ranging from semi-bituminous to anthracite. No effort will be made to describe all of these fields, but the writer wile confine himself to the four principal fields, namely, the Nenana field, in. the interior of Alaska, tributary to the Fairbanks district; the Matanuska, field, in the Matanuska Valley; the Kachemak Bay field on the east shore of Cook Inlet; and the Bering River field, east of the mouth of Copper River.

The brittle fracture of a Tic-lnconel cermet at room temperature is shown to occur primarily as a result of the cracking of the larger carbide particles (at a tensile strain of approximately 0.3 pct), followed by cracking of adjacent, smaller carbides and, finally, by the rupture of the lnconel matrix between cracked carbides (at a strain of-1.2 pct). No evidence was found for separation at the interface between carbide and matrix at any point in the fracture process. MATERIAL used in this study was a Tic-Inconel cermet prepared by infiltration (50 pct Tic, 50 pct Inconel: designated as TC66-I). A thin section of this material was brazed to a piece of low carbon steel and then mounted in lucite for metal-lographic preparation." After grinding, polishing, Deformation and fracture of the specimen was accomplished by bending the specimen as a simply supported, centrally loaded beam, in a bending fixture which could be placed in the stage of a microscope, with the tension side of the bend specimen under the microscope objective.? This method of deformation and observation has the advantage that the surface under examination is the most severely deformed portion of the specimen. The procedure followed was to deform the specimen a small amount, scan the surface at Xl OOO for any evidence of deformation or cracking, deform another small increment, scan the surface again, and so on until a

The Franklin Laboratory was designed mainly for the analysis of the products from the two concentrating mills situated at Franklin and Sterling Hill, the most important determinations being the zinc, iron, manganese, lime, moisture, and silica contents of the ores. Within the last 4 years, however, it has been found advisable to examine most of our supplies, and therefore additional space and equipment was allotted for the examination of such substances as oils, greases, soaps, alloys, fuels, paints, explosives, and water. The building as shown in elevation (Fig. 1) and plan (Fig. 2) consists of a main or routine laboratory, an experimental laboratory, a water analysis room, and the other accessories such as stock room, library, sampling and drying rooms, and office. The main laboratory is further divided into a balance room and zinc analysis room. As the greater part of our determinations are volumetric, good light is a very important factor and with this in view the interior malls of the building were constructed of white enameled brick laid in Keene cement. These also have the additional advantage that they give a clean and attractive appearance to the room. The windows are large, being 76 by 44 in. and even on very dark days the light is good throughout the whole laboratory. THE temperature coefficient of electrical resistance of pure metals is high and therefore the resistance increases rapidly with rising temperature. In 1871, Siemens suggested the use of this property as an accurate means of temperature determination. Owing to practical difficulties, particularly the contamination of the metal and consequent permanent change in its resistance and its resistance-temperature relation, this method fell into disrepute as a practical standard until revived later by Callendar and Griffiths, and subsequently by Holborn and Wien, all of whom showed that the earlier difficulties were not inherent in the method but incident to the mode of protection of the resistance coils. Following .the work of these investigators, the problem of temperature measurement by this means has been the subject of careful study and has now assumed an importance second only in practical adoption to the thermo-electric method. It is generally recognized, both here and in Europe, that the standard temperature scale should be the thermodynamic as it permits the evaluation of high temperatures on the basis of the radiation laws of Stefan and Bolzmann, of Rayleigh, and of Wien and Planck, on a scale consistent with that obtained by means of the gas thermometer at low temperatures. Lord Kelvin showed that only. a very small correction, amounting to about +0.7° at 1000° C.-almost within the limits of experimental errors-is necessary to adjust the constant-volume nitrogen thermometer to the ideal thermodynamic scale.
