For the past 20 years it has been generally accepted that the flotation process is made possible as a result of the action of certain chemical substances on the surface of the mineral particles. In fact, it has been suspected, but never demonstrated, that this action produces on the mineral particles a layer of chemosorbed ions that is of the order of magnitude of a monolayer; that is, of a layer one ion deep. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain initial results on the relationship of mineral surface area and collecting-agent requirements. Up to about eight years ago, all considerations involving the surface area of finely divided solids were limited by the fact that there was not in existence any general method for determining the extent of such surfaces, especially on mixed materials. However, the method invented by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller1 has changed the situation by providing a general procedure (BET method). This procedure has already been applied to mineral dressing problems2-4 and has now received confirmation as to accuracy by an entirely independent method.' This confirmatory or "absolute" method uses a very tedious calorimetric procedure and is not suitable for routine determinations; but still another method6 now is available to relate the results obtained by the BET method to those obtained calorimetrically. This Harkins-Jura method has the advantage that it does not require an assumption concerning the parking area per molecule of adsorbate (nitrogen). In the original work by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller the parking area per nitrogen molecule was calculated to be either 13.8?2 or 16.2?2. according as the nitrogen was assumed to be closely packed as in crystalline nitrogen or loosely packed as in liquid nitrogen. The initial experimental work from this laboratory2 supported the 13.8?2. figure; that work was done on glass spheres of measurable geometric area and it was based on the assumption that the glass spheres were truly smooth; any deviation from this assumption would, of course, have made the calculated parking area higher. Harkins and Jura's results suggest that the parking area is not the same for all substrata; furthermore, the average of the 87 measurements cited indicates a "preferred" parking area for the nitrogen molecule of about 15.2?2., with extreme values at 13.7 and 16.9?2. The average of 21 determinations made in connection with this study7 gave a parking area of 14.3 ± 0.27?². In view of this result and of the Harkins and Jura

METAL-ORGANIC INNER COMPLEXES AN inner complex is a cyclic chemical structure containing an inorganic cation that is bound simultaneously to several atoms in a single organic molecule; on the one hand by means of ordinary valence bonds (electron exchange), on the other hand through the action of the electric field thus created, which satisfies the so-called secondary valences. The relative positions of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups are such that most frequently a four, five, or six-membered ring results through this double attachment of the cation.1-6 The formation of inner-complex ring systems depends not only upon the nature and suitable position of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups for ring closure, but, to a great extent, also on the nature of the metallic cation entering the reaction. This selective character of chelate-forming organic compounds is one of their most interesting and most valuable properties. As a matter of fact, the largest number of their practical applications is based upon their specificity. 4,1-13 Once a chelate compound is formed, its character is definitely "organic" in nature. In other words, its properties are conditioned to a much larger degree by the carbon chains or rings than by the metallic atom. Many inner complexes are soluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene, paraffin oil or carbon tetrachloride, while the chelate-forming reagent before closure of the metal-organic ring is water soluble. (Example: copper complex of salicyl-aldoxime.) It is obvious that such particular properties as those indicated above can be utilized whenever specificity and practically complete binding of inorganic ions into an undissociable complex are required. One of the well-known applications of chelate-forming compounds has been the development of specific reagents in analytical chemistry,, creation of the spot-test method,4,14-16 and the application of the same principles to the contact print method for determining minerals.17 CHELATE-FORMING COMPOUNDS AS COLLECTORS In the field of flotation, where selectivity is often a quality of paramount importance for the collector, various workers have lately attempted to apply their knowledge of specific organic analytical reagents to this purpose. A. C. Vivian18 has concentrated cassiterite by using ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine (Cupferron) C6H5NO(=NONH4). Holman19 has tested dimethylglyoxime for the flotation of nickel oxide minerals, while deWitt has shown in a series of systematic experiments that alpha-dioximes were generally selective collectors for nickel ores. Taurin NH2(CH2)2SO3H has been proposed for the concentration of oxidized lead ores.19 Diphenylthiocarbazone

THOUGH powder metallurgy is one of the oldest of metallurgical processes, it is in its infancy as a branch of the modern field of metallurgy. As early as 3000 B.C., the ancients produced implements and weapons of iron by reducing iron ore in a charcoal fire and forging the resultant sponge while still hot into the desired shape. Melting and casting soon superseded the powder metallurgy practice, and it was not until the turn of the twentieth century that powder metallurgy was applied to the commercial manufacture of tungsten lamp filaments. From this beginning, the use of the powder metallurgy process spread to the manufacture of porous oil-impregnated bearings, cemented carbide tools, contact points, diamond grinding wheels, clutch facings, starter brushes, resin-bonded radio cores, magnets, metallic filters, and other parts. More recently, and particularly during the present war, there has been a definite trend toward the manufacture of machine parts by this process in competition with the more conventional fabricating methods. Notwithstanding these many developments, scientific progress has been slow. While many articles on powder metallurgy have appeared in the press and various publications, there have been too few contributions to our technical societies, with the result that there is a dearth of the type of information necessary for the full development of this science. It is of primary importance that the results of research and development be freely disseminated if powder metallurgy is to realize its fullest potentialities. PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION Excluding the refractory metal field, all commercial powder metallurgical products made by a cold compressing and sintering operation contain voids. These voids can be substantially eliminated by subsequent severe working and heat-treatment, but such practice has not proved economical in most applications. By applying heat during the compressing operation, plastic deformation of the powder particles is substantially increased, and the resultant compact or briquette is practically free of voids. However, hot-pressing has many attendant problems, which at present preclude its use in the manufacture of precision parts. The more important of these are to devise: I. A die steel capable of withstanding high pressures at elevated temperatures. 2. A high-temperature lubricant capable of preventing excessive die wear and welding of the compact to the die walls. 3. A method of retaining a neutral or reducing atmosphere in the compacting zone of the die assembly. 4. A means of ejecting the hot-pressed specimen into a neutral atmosphere until reasonably cold.

An analog computer model has been developed of a large, walking dragline. This model permits changes in the configuration of the dragline, or changes in its digging cycle, to be readily investigated on a computer. As a result, it is possible to determine ways of improving the dragline performance without having to carry out many expensive experiments on the actual machine. This model can also be used as a simulator for dragline operator training. INTRODUCTION The movement of large volumes of material is always a costly operation and the increasing trend towards the use of large capacity equipment does not necessarily produce the economy desired. This problem is of particular concern to the mining industry in its open-pit operations where large draglines are used to remove the overburden. Since this operation often forms a very large part of the total cost of open-pit mining it is particularly important that it be kept as economical as possible. This requires that the dragline be operated at its maximum possible productivity. In order to optimize the operation of a dragline it is desirable that a suitable model of the dragline be available for study. Once such a model is available the effects of changes in the configuration of the dragline, or changes in its digging cycle, could be readily investigated on a computer and methods of improving its performance could be determined without having to carry out expensive experiments on the actual machine. Such models would be of use not only to dragline users, but also to the manufacturers of draglines for design purposes. Presumably studies of this type could eventually lead to computer-con trolled stripping operations. As far as can be determined very little work1'2 has been done on the derivation of dragline models. Such models must be derived before work of the nature indicated in the previous paragraph can be carried out. As a small contribution to this field this paper describes work that has been carried out by the senior author during the past few years on the derivation of one such model. This model describes the drag, hoist and swing operations of a 35 cu yd, commercially available, walking dragline. This model was derived for use with an analog computer and can be used either for optimization studies, or for the training of dragline operators. DESCRIPTION OF DRAGLINE General: The particular dragline for which an analog computer model was developed is owned by the Great West Coal Company of Estevan, Saskatchewan. The Institute is custodian of funds for support of numerous gold medals and prizes and has representatives on boards awarding still others. Details regarding the Institute Awards are given below. The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize THE partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes: first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the subcommittee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A subcommittee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Division annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October meeting, and the award shall be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of .the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medalist." Awards of the medal have been made as follows: 1920—-Robert Woolston Hunt. 192G—John A. Mathews. 1926—Charles Lewis Kinney, Jr. 1929—Edgar Collins Bain. 193G—James Aston. Awards of the prize have been made as follows: 1928—C. H. Herty, Jr. 1929—William E. Griffiths.

IT is customary to make an alloy of copper in the same way, not to increase its quantity as with gold or silver, but to corrupt it for the art of casting and to destroy a certain natural viscosity in it. For this result it is accompanied by tin and also, sometimes, brass. But its proper and true alloy is fine tin, except, however, when you wish to make hammered works. For these, copper must be pure and without any trace [of impurity], otherwise it cannot be hammered thin, gilded in the fire, drawn into a wire, or made into vessels for use as is customary; but in casting, tin is almost essential. When you come to this association, just as it changes nature and appearance according to the proportion of tin which you give it, so it changes name and is no longer called copper but bronze, or, for a greater distinction of the quantity of tin for every hundred or more of copper, it is called by skilled workmen metal of more or less fineness as it contains more or less tin. This is recognized by the whiteness and brittleness: changing from red, which is the color of copper, it becomes white; from soft and flexible it becomes hard and brittle as glass. This admixture removes it so far from its original nature that one who does not know that it is a compound material believes it to be one of the number of metals engendered by Nature. Now, so that you may understand well, I tell you that various kinds of this are made, all according to the proportions of the quantities and according to the kind of work. For one kind of bronze is desired by those who make statues; this is not desired by those who make artillery or by those who make bells, mortars, basins, and similar cast objects. Now in order to alloy it into the species of bronze, eight, nine, ten, up to twelve pounds of tin are put with every hundred pounds of copper. Those who want it to make bells put twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five, and twenty-six, depending on the tone, on whether they are large or small in form, and on whether they wish to make the tone deep or sharp and clear. R. P. Seelig.*—Dr. Lenel is to be congratulated on his presentation of a particularly interesting paper describing the use of the powder metallurgy process for the production of magnetic pole pieces. The only thing that might be added is that we have been successful in producing pole . pieces with a narrow hysteresis curve by the use of considerably lower sintering temperatures than the ones used by Dr. Lenel. It is quite possible that this use of lowe- temperatures has considerably widened the field of commercial application for pole pieces made from metal powders. Development work is currently being done on an a.c. application of a sintered iron part. However, I am in full agreement with Dr. Lenel that if eddy currents are an important factor in the application, we cannot substitute sintered material for laminated sheet-metal structures. Mr. Peters' remarks concerning the limitations of machine parts were well taken. The emphasis of the limitations makes it easier to define clearly what we can do and-what the advantages are of machine parts made of metal powders. When I mention metal-powder machine parts, I mean those of relatively high density, although complete elimination of porosity is not possible at this time. The limitations of the field for this type of parts are largely economical. I believe that Mr. Langhammer has made that point very clear. The following questions are very often asked: How large a part can you make? How close can you hold the dimensions ? How fast can a part be produced? In a majority of the cases, it depends on the cost at which the part can be produced. A large variety of shapes and sizes of a number of materials can be formed. However, the main requirement in this field of endeavor is whether this can be done more economically by powder metallurgy than by other manufacturing methods. As a general indication, it may be stated that densities up to 95 per cent of that of rolled material can now be produced commercially in simpler parts. Tolerances of plus or minus 0.001 in. are common, but where special conditions justify, closer tolerances can be held; we are producing a part of which one dimension is held to 0.0003 inch. Finally, as far as maximum size is concerned, technically this would depend on the capacity of the press and furnace equipment available. Actually, we find that the economical limit of powder-metallurgy machine parts is approximately one pound. From there on, each individual case must he studied on its own merits.

Without having asked for it, the writer has apparently been drawn into the discussion regarding relative hoisting capacities which was started by Woodward Iron, egged on by Joe Haller of Cleveland-Cliffs [Mining Engineering, August p. 642] and Axel Kjelgaard [November p. 919], who took exception to Mr. Haller's remarks of tonnage hoisted and avers that they do better in Sweden. It does not appear to the writer that Mr. Haller was inclined to refer to the tonnage hoisted at Cleveland-Cliffs in a manner to imply that they claimed any hoisting record, but rather as a statement that they had hoisted a certain amount of ore during the year 1950. Mr. Haller has been in the mining game long enough to appreciate what Mr. Kjelgaard did not apparently take into consideration, that length of haul, shifts hoisted, nature of ore, method of loading and the many other factors which influence the hoisting cycle make a comparison of tonnages hoisted of two given mines almost an impossibility. Mr. Cheyette sent you .a copy of his letter to Bob Manegold relative to the capacities of the Orient #2 mine. There are several mines around the Country which constantly set up records about which little or nothing at all is ever heard. We cite the Snow Hill Coal Co. mine at Terre Haute, Ind., which has an automatic Nordberg hoist and which hoists 12 tons per trip or 700 tons per hr from 700 ft. This is a counter-weighted installation and a complete cycle is made every 62 seconds or 58 trips per hr. Another mine, The Potash Company of America mine at Carlsbad, N. Mex., has a Nordberg automatic hoist, hoisting eight tons per trip from 1150 ft on a one minute cycle. The materials hoisted in these two mines are ideal for automatic hoisting-they are free flowing so that no hang up is anticipated and hoisting is continuous. Multiplying out the above figures you will find that it is possible to hoist 11,000 tons in two shifts at Snow Hill or over 3 million tons in 300 days per year and over 2 million tons at Potash. Other mines have records which can be pointed to with pride. When a record for one year is established, it doesn't stand too long as here in America the ambition of all the men connected with the operation forces them on to larger tonnages. T. C. During July and August, 1931, the Bloomington Limestone Co., at Bloomington, Ind., ran a single wire saw on ledge No. 2 at Maple Hill quarry. The ledge was hard rock, much harder than the average Indiana limestone. It was opened at two ends for a depth of about 20 ft., leaving a 130-ft. section between. During the tests 21 cuts were made in this ledge, to an average depth of 10.42 ft., for a total effective cutting area of 28,445 sq. ft. The actual area sawed was about 20 per cent higher, as we did not level down in the center, preferring to cut deeper on the ends. The various cuts were carefully logged, and the results plotted. A study of these results is interesting, as it enables a forecast of probable future costs to be made, and also because it points out the limitations of wire saws, and the lines development should logically take. Some of the inferences to be drawn are discussed below. Best Length of Cut.—No trouble was due to length of cut, except that we could not easily level down a long cut, and it is probable that longer cuts, say up to 200 ft., can be made. Obviously, longer cuts will result in a higher sawing rate in square feet per hour if they do not cause stoppages. Working Higher Ledges.—The cuts averaged 10.42 ft. high by 130 ft. long. A study of several logs indicated that during only about 15 per cent of the cutting time was the saw cutting to its full efficiency; that is, during about 85 per cent of the time the saw was bedding in at the ends and not cutting well in the center, or the ends were below the floor line and only part of the wire was doing effective cutting. This does not mean that the wire was cutting to only 15 per cent of its capacity, but it means that during about 85 per cent of the time part of the cutting was being wasted. If higher ledges had been worked, the wire would have cut to its full efficiency a large part of the time, as it would have had a greater distance to saw after it had bedded in to the ledge before the ends went down below the floor level. The exact saving to be expected cannot be calculated, but it would be large if really high cuts were made.

THE rapidly increasing use of machinery for the mining of coal and operations incidental thereto has materially changed conditions from a safety standpoint. A few of the coal-producing states have recognized the need for specialized electrical equipment for use in mines and have introduced certain requirements in their State safety regulations, notably Pennsylvania. This paper discusses the principal problems involved in maintenance of such equipment. PERMISSIBLE: EQUIPMENT "Permissible" electrical equipment is equipment that has met certain prescribed standards for use in mines where hazardous conditions may occur and has been recommended by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Such machinery is available on the market for most coal-mining operations--for instance, coal cutting, transportation, drilling, loading, working-place illumination, shot-firing and pumping. A notable exception is the trolley-reel gathering locomotive which, although its parts may be explosion-tested by the Bureau, has not been approved as permissible for the following reasons: I. The trailing cable is subjected to more severe service than on other equipment. 2. State regulations do not require that a working place be examined for methane before a locomotive enters it. 3. Even with two-conductor cable, imperfect or inadequate bonding may cause the emission of sparks at the wheels of the locomotive and at rail joints. 4. As the locomotive is equipped with a trolley pole, and as the trolley wire may be installed and used in unsafe territory in spite of rigid State regulations, a trolley-reel gathering locomotive is always a potential hazard. MAINTENANCE The proper procedure for maintenance of permissible equipment may be divided into three parts: (I) inspection, (2) actual maintenance and (3) changes or improvements to existing machines. To secure the fullest benefits through the use of permissible equipment it is necessary that all men involved understand the principles underlying the safety features of this equipment and realize the significance of defects, so that neglect and indifference in the maintenance thereof may be eliminated. Inspection From the standpoint of safety it is desirable no doubt to make a suitable inspection of permissible electrical equipment once a week, but the opening of every enclosed compartment at each inspection may do more harm than good. The openings to such compartments are closed with various types of covers very accurately machined, often made of the softer alloys to reduce weight, and fastened with a multitude of bolts, screws, washers, and other small parts. Frequent handling of these covers may cause sufficient damage to defeat their original purpose and intent.

In a paper by Mr. Frank Firmstone, published in vol. iv, of the Transactions of the Institute, on " Comparison of Results from Open-topped and Closed-topped Furnaces," the regularity of the average grade of pig iron procluced by the furnace under different conditions is expressed by means of a curve or diagram. The object of this note is to show that the graphic method, or that of representing variations by plotted curves or diagrams, is capable of a much more extended application to blast-furnace records, making a valuable auxiliary to the " furnace hook," and that by it the practical metallurgist may obtain at a glance information concerning the variations of the furnace during long periods, which could be found in the furnace book only after a tedious search. Plate XII is a graphic record of an anthracite blast furnace for one month. The table on page 554 gives the figures obtained from the furnace book, together with a record of temperature of the atmosphere, barometric pressure, and moisture in the air, which was obtained from a meteorological observatory not far from the furnace. In the records of a furnace, two of the variable qualities are final results, viz., the quantity of pig iron produced, and its grade; all the other variables are antecedent causes which produce the final results. Of these variable callses which contribute to the quantity of product and its grade, some are partially under the control of the furnace manager, others depend upon the state of the atmosphere, and still others are accidental. Keeping development ahead of retreat mining is a problem which occurs nearly everywhere longwall mining is used in the United States. As improved equipment technology has allowed the application of longwall mining to more difficult mining conditions, and with higher retreat rates, the problem has become more critical. Many factors determine development speed, including roof and floor conditions, mining heights, seam heights, and the number of entries. In an effort to maximize the rate of development and production from development sections, U. S. Steel's Gary District has used five entry, three entry, four entry and is planning two entry development panels at its different mines. With the introduction of various types of shield supports, it is now possible to utilize longwall mining in higher coal over 3 meters (10 feet), lower coal under one meter, in difficult roof conditions, and with soft floor. Improved shearers of 300 KW (400 HP) and more make cutting heights over 3 meters (10 feet) possible, and off pan shearers and improved Gleithobel plows make cutting less than 1 meter (40 inches) seam height possible. Longwall mining under these conditions puts an added strain on the ability to develop panels as fast as they are retreated. Poor roof conditions require a substantial amount of additional roof support to ensure that roof control in the head and tall entries will not hinder longwall retreat. The additional measures of longer bolts, resin bolts, point anchor resin bolts, roof mats, roof trusses, steel or wood cross bars, and roof grouting all place an additional burden on man power, installation time, and cost on the mining cycle. Additional roof bolting on development can cut the potential mining rate in half, and any roof falls cause significant delays to mining. Timbers and cribs can restrict ventilation and require more entries. Soft floor conditions can greatly impede development through tramming difficulties with shuttle cars and roof bolters, time required for cleaning and repairing roadways, and maintenance difficulties on equipment. High coal sometimes requires rib support to be Installed during the mining cycle, further cutting the mining rate. Mining low seams requires that roof or floor be mined in the head and tail entries as well as the track or tractor roadway entry to provide clearance of the longwall equipment. Mining this rock slows down the mining rate because of the extra material being mined and the extra wear and tear on equipment. To a large degree these conditions effecting development speed cannot be controlled.

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) IN a paper by Mr. Frank Firmstone, published in vol. iv, of the Transactions of the Institute, on "Comparison of Results from Open-topped and Closed-topped Furnaces," the regularity of the average grade of pig iron produced by the furnace under different conditions is expressed by means of a curve or diagram. The object of this note is to show that the graphic method, or that of representing variations by plotted curves or diagrams, is capable of a much more extended application to blast-furnace records, making a valuable auxiliary to the "furnace .book," and that by it the practical metallurgist may obtain at a glance information concerning the variations of the furnace during long periods, which could be found in the furnace book only after a tedious search. Plate XII is a graphic record of an anthracite blast furnace for one month. The table on page 554 gives the figures obtained from the furnace book, together with a record of temperature of the atmosphere, barometric pressure, and moisture in the air, which was obtained from a meteorological observatory not far from the furnace. In the records of a furnace, two of the variable qualities are final results, viz., the quantity of pig iron produced, and its grade; all the other variables are antecedent causes which produce the final results. Of these variable causes which contribute to the quantity of product and its grade, some are partially under the control of the furnace manager, others depend upon the state of the atmosphere, and still others are accidental. WHEN bronze is melted in open-flame furnaces a considerable amount of slag is formed during the melting operation. This slag maybe incidental to the melting practice or it may be formed intentionally by slag-forming constituents added to the furnace charge to provide a covering for the melted metal. When this slag is removed from the furnace, it contains, in addition to the free metal carried with it by the skimming operation, a considerable amount of metal as oxide either combined or mechanically mixed with it. By the usual crushing and washing methods this metallic oxide generally goes to the tailings pile, so diluted by other foundry waste that its recovery is economically impossible. If this furnace slag is not mixed with other foundry waste, practically all of the metal oxide as well as the free metal may be recovered by some form of smelting operation. The first side of the problem to be considered is the amount of slag produced. It may not be true that the majority of foundries have no record of the amount of slag made, but it is certainly true that a very great many either have no record or pay little attention to it. Usually the collection of furnace slag for one normal week's run will be sufficient to determine the advisability of its being handled in a different manner from the crushing and concentrating generally employed. If a large representative sample of the accumulation is crushed and concentrated and the recovery compared with the results of a careful assay, it will be found that a large percentage of the total metal content was lost in the washing process. The percentage of loss will be greater than the metallic oxide content, as some free metal in extremely fine particles always is carried away in grains of slag. From such a comparison, it may be determined whether or not the slag should be melted, sold or treated as before. An example of an actual test of this kind is given below. In a foundry melting 50,000 to 80,000 lb. of bronze per day, a week's accumulation of furnace slag and ladle skimmings amounted to 16,500 lb.-over three times as much as the foundry superintendent estimated before the accumulation was made. Two tons of this material was taken as representative of the lot. This was ground through a thoroughly cleaned ball-mill and concentrated over a Wilfley table. The

THE local auditorium of a little Alabama mining town was crowded with expectant men, women and children, as the bulletin board had announced the addition of visiting entertainers to supplement the local talent and motion pictures which usually made up the program of the regular monthly safety meeting. In the audience, near the stage, sat a group of bright-faced boys in boy scout uniforms, discussing the picture just completed. As the lights flashed on a crash and scream was heard from the outside, a shrill whistle and word of command from the scoutmaster, and five of the scouts ran out of the hall, while the mine super-intendent stepped on the stage and requested everyone to keep their seats. The scouts returned, three of them carrying a limp figure in their arms, while the other two cleared the doorway and aisle of excited spectators. They marched to the stage and, placing the apparently badly-injured boy on the floor, proceeded to give an expert demonstration of first aid to the injured. The scoutmaster then explained to the audience that the whole affair had been arranged for their benefit, and invited the local first-aid men to come up on the stage to examine and criticize the boys' work. This gave an opening for several talks on the value of first-aid training and accident prevention, which is the main object of the monthly meetings. This demonstration was given by the first-aid team of Troop One, and the entertainment was provided by members of Troop One and Twenty-eight of the Bir-mingham Scout Council, organized by the writer for the purpose of promoting interest in the welfare and safety meetings in the mining villages of the State. During the past year they have visited a number of such meet-ings and presented programs similar to the one men-tioned above. However, in order to assure a good attendance, entertainment features must also be pro-vided, and the serious part of the evening program was interspersed with excellent vocal and instrumental mu-sic, dancing and novelty acrobatic acts furnished by the visiting scouts. In addition to the numerous first-aid teams of the Birmingham Council, there are hundreds of scouts scat-tered throughout the mining district whose knowledge of first aid, safety first, life-saving, personal health and public health are a constant source of protection to their community. All of these subjects are covered by merit badge pamphlets and are required of an eagle scout.

" If you could only get that motion into a machine," said a gentleman, as he watched the process of making a " van " on a shovel, and saw the copper roll up to the highest point, "it would beat the world for slime-dressing." This idea has led to many an effort to get into a machine that peculiar motion, called the " vanning motion;" and so cams, eccentrics, eccentric gears, levers, bell-cranks, togglejoints, links, springs, etc., have been brought into requisition, while a contribution has been laid upon all the conceivable motions, rolling, tumbling, swinging, jerking, tossing, dropping, tripping, intermittent, regular and irregular, or a combination of some of them, to which have been added percussion, concussion, and more discussion —all in a vain attempt to combine in a single machine the consecutive motions of the shovel, in washing, flowing, and tossing the van. The Patent Office Reports, and the various mills of the country, show, as a result of this, a lot of gimeracks, most of which never went beyond a first trial, finding their way to the scrap-heap. Others still running might as well be there; while some have considerable merit for dressing other and richer sands than copper. It does look tempting to see that clean edge of copper climbing up the shovel-blade; but those who have seen in it such visions of large fortunes have not considered the time it takes to make a van, compared with the small quantity treated upon the shovel; and this points to the reason for the failure of all that class of machines called " vanning machines," when used for dressing copper slimes, namely, a lack of capacity. The writer has come to this conclusion through an experience with the Rittinger side percussion-table of the most improved make, sent from Germany to the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, and with the Ellenbecker tables, used by the same company, both of which are good types of that class of machines. In both of these machines, the tables are suspendetl by rods which allow them to swing, and they can also be adjusted for the purpose of varying the inclination of the table. In the Rittinger machine, the motion of the table is at a right angle to the flow of the slime, being produced by a wiper-cam which throws the table against a spring, which throws it quickly back against a stop, the percussion throwing up the mineral.
