Most beneficiation plants utilize automatic controls to varying degrees-some have the bare minimum of controls, others qualify as semi-auto- mated operations; a very few are nearing what may be termed "fully-automated" status. But for those plants that produce a filter cake product, the lack of suitable instrumentation for measuring and con- trolling the moisture of the filter cake has been a major stumbling block to fully-automated operations. Today in many cases, this bottle-neck can be removed because various moisture measuring devices are now available to permit automation of the filtering stage. What are these devices? . . . Where can they be used? To answer these questions, two types of operating plants-one, semi-automated and the other, almost fully automated-can be examined. Both plants employ disc filters from which is produced a magnetic concentrate for pelletizing. (The control schemes and equipment depicted in this article are similar to those usable in drum filter plants.)

Time and again, lives are lost in underground cave-ins only be- cause there is no quick, sure way of locating the victims. When such accidents happen, rescuers must usually depend on the testimony of eye- witnesses for information on the whereabouts of trapped miners. Seldom is this information reliable. The witnesses themselves have just been through a traumatic experience that has distorted or destroyed their sense of time and place. A far more reliable method of finding men underground has recently been developed by the Coal Mining Research Institute of Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. With this system, a miner can be located with adequate precision even if he shows no sign of life. For the system to work, the miner need only have his electric cap lamp somewhere nearby. The system consists of a minute radio transmitter operated by the lamp battery (Fig. 1). This tiny transmitter continuously emits high- frequency electromagnetic waves that can be picked up by a sensitive direction-finder receiver in case of accident.

PRACTICALLY all tin-base babbitt metals used in engine bearings are made to customers' specifications, which are many and varied. The copper ranges from 3 to 8 per cent. and the antimony from 4 to 13 per cent.; generally, the babbitt with lower copper content will contain from 4 to 8 per cent. antimony and that with higher copper will have from 7 to 13 per cent. antimony. The allowable lead content varies from 0.20 to 2.00 per cent. If a solder is used as a bonding material instead of tin, the resulting material in the finished bearing will have a higher lead content, but it would not be enough to bring the lead above specificational limits. Impurities such as iron, arsenic and bismuth should be determined in the tin before using to insure a uniform and high-grade product. These points must be considered when segregating and grading the waste that comes from the finishing operations on lined bearings.

Finely ground dried bentonites were compacted with a laboratory size Komarek roller compactor. Before compaction the moisture content of the bentonite was adjusted from 8-12% by adding water in a mixer. Predetermined amounts of Nat CO3 activator were dissolved in that water and added to the bentonite. Comparative rheological tests were then run with the compacted, activated bentonite versus unaltered bentonite. Compaction and activation of the bentonites improved their viscosity and water loss properties considerably, more so than extrusion and slurrying. It was concluded that, by using a compactor, bentonite reserves can be extended because low quality material can be improved without adding organic polymers. Introduction Many bentonites mined in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana are naturally of drilling mud quality. Those of low sodium content, and those of predominantly potassium, calcium, and magnesium exchangeable cations need altering to meet drilling mud requirements. Most foreign bentonites require sodium activation to meet drilling mud standards set by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

(written discussion *).-There are several methods for measuring the internal resistance of a battery, the line resistance in a circuit containing an e.m.f., or the true value of this e.m.f. The writers, however, were the first to em-ploy a simple principle whereby the total resistance of the circuit is ad-justed to a preassigned value for which the scale of the millivoltmeter is graduated, the only e.m.f. employed being that of the source measured. One of the simplest forms of these instruments is described on page 2842, September Bulletin. In papers now in the press we have described some twenty modifications of this simple design but all operating upon the same fundamentally new principle. The instrument devised by Mr. . Porter is of this general type but, unlike the designs we have recom-mended, is open to serious objections.

THOMPSON1 proposed a very convenient nomenclature in which an imaginary regular tetrahedron was used to facilitate the analysis of dislocation interactions in fcc materials. The faces of the tetrahedron were constructed parallel to four different sets of (111) planes, and the six edges of the tetrahedron then represented the six 1/2 [110] Burgers vectors. The lines which joined the midpoint of a tetrahedron face with the ends of one of its edges represented the Burgers vectors of the partial dislocations into which the six 1/2 [I101 Burgers vectors dissociate. Using Frank&apos;s2 notation, all of the dislocations and their partial dislocations were identified and numerous possible interactions were postulated. The case of hexagonal crystals is unfortunately more complex, but it appears convenient to introduce a system similar to that of Thompson1 to describe the various slip planes and Burgers vectors encountered in cph structures. Flue gas desulfurization when burning western U.S. coals can be expected to be easier to achieve and less costly than when burning higher sulfur eastern and central coals. However, western coals cannot generally be burned in compliance with federal and state new source emission standards without some degree of control. Western coals and lignite represent about 20% of total U.S. recoverable reserves with 90% of that strip minable, and their production is predicted to increase from the 60 million tons mined in 1973 to 300 million tons in 1985. Most will be used for electric power generation, where low sulfur content is a paramount concern. Western coals are predominantly below 1% sulfur; low compared with typical values of 2 and 3% for eastern and central coals. Coal cleaning for removal of sulfur is not commercially practiced on Western coals, which typically contain half organic and half pyritic sulfur. United States Steel Corp&apos;s. Minntac mine is located at Mt. Iron, Minn. on the Mesabi Iron range. The taconite pit is two miles wide, with a maximum depth of 170 ft. Millions of tons of crude ore, waste rock, and surface overburden are handled annually at the mine. All crude ore plus some of the lower-grade rock are rail-hauled; other materials are trucked. Length of rail haul averages 3.5 mi, with a lift of 140 ft. The maximum grade against the load is 1 ½ %. Nine 1200 hp diesel-electric locomotives handle trains of 40-and 50-cu yd side dump cars in crude ore and lower-grade rock service. In addition to this continuous operation, locomotives handle coarse tailings disposal and switching duties on an intermittent basis. All railroad equipment operates under the supervision of a mine control foreman through voice radio communication. The pit foreman also has this frequency available, quickly accommodating any changes in operation that may be required.

For the first time in the history of shaft sinking, the concept of mid-shaft loading has been used. By making use of available hoisting capacity during drilling periods, development work on underground hoist chambers and ore-pass and ventilation by-pass systems at Vaal Reefs South gold mine is being done simultaneously with sinking. This factor, together with the unusual configuration and design of the twin-shaft system at Vaal Reefs South, and the use of raise borers in the installation of ore-pass and ventilation by-pass systems, will mean that the shaft will be commissioned at least a year earlier than would have been possible had conventional methods been used. The possibilities of mid-shaft loading in reducing the time normally taken by shaft service development were recognized by Anglo American Corp. consulting engineers and Shaft Sinkers Pty. Ltd., the company which is sinking both shafts at Vaal Reefs.

The Republic mine, situated forty miles from Marcus, a station on the Spokane Falls and Northern Railroad, in the northeastern part of the State of Washington, was located in 1896, but no development-work was dolie until the spring of 1897. While much of the ore mined since then has been rich enough for shipment to smelters, a method of locally treating the lower-grade ores soon became a matter of prime importance, because only about 40 per cent. of the values could be recovered by plain amalgamation, even with ores assaying 4 to 5 ounces of gold per ton. Experiments with cyanidation, in various ways, led to the adoption of the Pelatan-Clerici process and the erection on this system of a 10-ton experimental plant, which was later increased to a capacity of 35 tons per day. Recovery of fine coal from solids reporting to wash water has become increasingly important. These solids range from about 28 mesh to 0 and constitute 3 to 7 pct by weight of the feed tonnage to a coal preparation plant. In the past they were usually wasted to streams, but present clean stream legislation makes it necessary to remove them from the wash water and, if economically possible, recover the associated coal as a saleable product. Where these solids are not wasted to streams or to slime ponds they are recovered by thickeners and filters. Since filter cake is often high in ash or sulfur, or both, it is not readily marketed or used. Common practice is to mix it with other plant products, generally slack or cleaned run-of-mine. Uniform blending is difficult, not only because the impurity is usually high, but also because during certain operating periods it is possible to get a concentration of this filter cake in a railroad or barge.

High purity ZrC14 (25 to 200 ppm of metallic impurities) can be readily prepared in simple apparatus by thermal decomposition of alkali chlorozirconate fused salts at 500° to 600°C and at atmospheric pressure. Suggested phase diagrams for the systems NaCI-ZrC14 and KCI-ZrCI, are presented. ALKALI chlorozirconate compositions — anhydrous fused mixtures of ZrCl4, NaC1, and KC1— are manufactured commercially and are used by the magnesium industry to introduce zirconium into magnesium alloys. Zirconium refines the grain size and improves the physical properties of many important magnesium alloys. In the course of working with chlorozirconate compositions of high ZrCl4 content, it was noticed that these salts decomposed progressively itwaswith increasing temperature to yield considerable amounts of a ZrCl4 sublimate of high purity together with a solid chlorozirconate residue. An analysis of bolting reinforcement of several large [approximately 18 m (60 ft) cube] pillars was performed. The many overcoring stress profiles in pillars at the mine were used to produce generalized stress distributions at various stages in pre- and post-failure. A complete stress-deformation curve was estimated from this data. The effect of pillar bolting on the load-deformation behavior was extrapolated from the observed unbolted behavior. Bolting can increase pillar strength by up to 10 percent. The effect of bolting on general mine stability was examined with a short computer analysis. The computer model was calibrated against measurements performed at the mine, and produced good agreement between measured and modeled stresses. The analysis indicated that bolting increases the bolted pillar safety factors in the event of additional pillar failure by a small amount (approximately 5 percent). Progressive pillar failure is unlikely, because arching transfers most load from yielding pillars to large unmined abutments rather than to the smaller panel pillars.

Roger A. Markle was sworn in as director of the US Bureau of Mines on September 27, 1978, ending a 20-month period during which the Bureau was without a leader. Some Bureau observers wondered out loud if this delay was a signal that Interior was slowly pulling the rug out from under the agency. When Markle was finally tapped for the director&apos;s position-coal industry executive to lead an agency that had been stripped of its fossil fuel R&D functions as well as its safety and health enforcement role--the speculation was fast and furious: One camp had it that Markle was brought in to phase out the Bureau; others said that Markle&apos;s directive was to revitalize the organization by charting a new Bureau course. In March, with the proposed Department of Natural Resources making headlines, ME went to Washington to interview Markle about his first six months as director and the goals he has set for the Bureau&apos;s future.

Last August, American Commercial Barge Line Co. (ACBL) began moving coal from mines on the old Camp Breckinridge property in Western Kentucky to TVA&apos;s new 2600 MW steam plant at Cumberland City, Tenn. By April of 1973, this movement will reach a level of 7 million tpy. TVA bought the coal rights to this property from the General Services Administration in 1965 for approximately $7 million and is now in possession of reserves containing about 120 million tons of recoverable No. 9 coal, and about the same recoverable amount of No. 11 coal. TVA then contracted through competitive bidding with Peabody Coal Co. to mine the No. 9 seam through two slope shafts. The mines are about 300-ft deep and are separated by the one major fault on this property. The mine portals are approximately 3 ½ mi apart, with the northern portal being over nine miles distant from the Ohio River.
