This paper describes the record-keeping and reporting responsibilities of the West Virginia Department of Mines and tells about the pilot project conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and worth of implementing a computer-based formation management system encompassing the large amount of data used by the Department and to lay the groundwork for future implementation of a state-wide information network. The paper briefly discusses the equipment and software that was used. It also discusses the system data files and subfiles that were constructed (or will be constructed in later phases of the project). Finally, the paper describes how the system will expand in the next several years.

HOW often have those who make mining a career said that, "mining is different"? This kind of feeling often expresses itself in talking shop with men of other industries. And there is no doubt about it; mining is different. There are different marketing problems, different production problems, and we certainly have different personnel problems, to cite but a few. Mining people have recently been discovering though, that many of their problems are not unique to mining. They are beginning, in fact, to find that many of them are dead ringers for problems that other industries have had to face and solve years ahead of mining.

SEYBOLT et al.' have detected various silica films formed on a 3 pct Si-Fe alloy after heating at low oxygen potentials with the electron diffraction method, and they have made some observations on the H,0/H2 ratios required to form them. It is interesting to note that an attempt has been made to rationalize the effect of prestrain on the strength of Hastelloy X-280 after various aging treatments. However, two points raised by the authors seem to be somewhat unclear. 1) Concerning their Fig. l(a), the authors state: "Extensive dislocation networks are still in evidence. The 24-hr aging at 1500°F and the 15-min soak at 1350°F did not eliminate the dislocations introduced by the 20 pct cold reduction." This is, of course, to be expected since complete "elimination" of dislocations would require recrystallization which does not occur at 1500°F in Hastelloy X. However, recovery

Untensioned, fully grouted, steel bars (dowels) up to 30 m long and 45 mm in diameter were used to reinforce rock slopes several hundred metres high, excavated for a hydroelectric project near Revelstoke, British Columbia. These dowels were successfully used to prevent surface rock from loosening, to prevent sliding on interconnected discontinuities and to prevent sliding of relatively intact rock on a thin shear zone. Because the interaction between rock slopes and dowels is not well understood, critical slopes were extensively monitored. Based on the experience from Revelstoke and elsewhere, it appears to be worthwhile, in most circumstances, to reconsider the need for tensioning rock anchors.

A key point in the design and operation of a modern mining operation is the construction of what is called an ore-body model or block model. This model is a representation of reality constructed from predicted information. The blocks involved are merely subsets of the overall model which allows manipulation of the contained information on a local scale. In general, block models enable mine planners to effectively select the most promising means of extracting the ore both physically and economically. The uses of a block model can be quite diversified, but one must realize that a single model that satisfies all curiosities and forms of expertise is difficult to construct.

The consumption of barytes in certain paints, polyurethane foams, seamless flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol gaskets for food containers, and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations relies on the unique properties of barium sulfate. There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase Prices which have encouraged the use of alternative or competitive materials and restricted market growth.

Efforts were made to determine the amount of increase in the drying rate which could be obtained through acoustic treatment of ultra fine coal under various conditions, and to test the feasibility of using a rotary kiln and multitiered vibrating screens as a means for continuous drying of coal fines. Introduction of acoustic energy during the rotary kiln experiments increased the drying rates from 10-40%, depending upon the experimental condition. The use of a drying assembly consisting of multitiered vibrating screens produced better results than the rotary kiln and has definite possibilities of providing an effective means of drying coal fines in relatively large quantities.

The prevailing system of locating wells on a rectangular basis, as shown in Fig. 1-A, has developed because of the exigencies of offsetting at boundary lines. When, however, a very large tract is being drilled, it is often possible to abandon this inferior method for the superior arrange- ment known as "staggering," which is illustrated in Fig. 1, B and C. The outcome of these tests has been twofold. They have served to demonstrate that the tiltmeter is a useful and dependable instrument which could prove to be of significant value in reaching the goals of landslide prediction and control, and they have raised a good many more questions about the mechanism of slides than they have answered. It seems likely that many of the old concepts and assumptions will be modified or discarded as more knowledge of actual field phenomenon is gained. Safety and economy are paramount concerns in determining slope stability. These two considerations govern the feasibility and character of slope construction from start to finish.

John Edward Stead, a past-president of the British Iron and Steel Institute, and an Honorary Member of this Institute since 1906, died at his home at Redcar, Yorkshire, on Oct. 31, 1923, after a long illness. For many years, Mr. Stead had been recognized as a leading authority in chemical and metallurgical matters, particularly those relating to iron; he gave freely of his experience by the contribution of papers to the twenty-eight technical societies in which he retained his membership as recently as 1920. He had been honored with the Doctor's degree by three English universities, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society 1219

The flotation characteristics of the oxide copper minerals, malachite, azurite, and cuprite, have not presented the difficulty for concentration as have those of the copper silicate, chrysocolla. The copper carbonates and oxides respond reasonably well to flotation with conventional collectors, whereas chrysocolla will not respond to flotation with fatty acids or xanthates under normal flotation conditions. In this view then, other reagents will have to be devised to function as collectors for chrysocolla. The most obvious general class of reagents for this purpose would seem to be the organic copper chelating compounds. The utility of chelating agents as collectors in flotation systems has already been demonstrated.1-6

A review will be given on the electrodeposition of Au, Ag and Pd and their technically important alloys focusing on recent work at the Forschungsinstitut. Special emphasis will be given to the influence of impurities on the behaviour of the electrolyte and the properties of the deposits, e.g. on resistance and on thermal and mechanical behaviour. The importance of C in gold and silver deposits and of H2 in Pd and its alloys at normal and high speed deposition rates will be discussed. Among Pd alloys attention will be focused on the Pd-Ni and Pd-Ni-Co systems. Comments will be made on deposition of Rh and Pt.
