The surface, gain boundary, and twin boundary energies, as well as the surface diffusion coefficient, of cobalt were determined from tests at 1354°C in pure hydrogen. A value of 1970 ergs per sq cm was calculated for the surface energy, using the zero creep method. It was possible to measure the creep strains at room temperature because the phase transformation was accompanied by negligible irreversible strain and no kinking. Established techniques based on interference microscopy were used to obtain values for the other three properties. The gain boundary and twin boundary energies were 650 ad 12.7 ergs per sq cm, respectively, while a value of 2.75 x l0 sq cm per sec was determined for the surface dufusion coefficient. In the course of a general study of cobalt and cobalt-base alloys, information was required about the surface energy of cobalt. Hence, the present program was undertaken to measure the interfacial free energy, or, briefly, the surface energy, of the solid-vapor interface of cobalt. The microcreep method was selected for this measurement because other surface properties could also be determined from the accompanying thermal grooving at grain boundaries and twin boundaries. A brief summary of the methods for determining the various surface properties follows. At very high temperatures and under applied stresses too small to initiate slip, small-diameter wires will change in length by the process of diffu-sional creep described by Herring.1 The wires acquire the familiar bamboo structure and increase or decrease in length in direct proportion to the net force on the specimen. For a specimen experiencing a zero creep rate, the applied load, wo, necessary to offset the effects of the surface energy, y,, and grain boundary energy, y b, is given by the relation: where r is the wire radius and n is the number of grains per unit length of wire. The first results obtained from wire specimens were reported by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff.' udin3 later corrected these results for the effect of grain boundary energy. The grain boundary energy is determined from measurements of the dihedral angle 8 of the groove which develops by thermal etching at the grain boundary-free surface junction. For an equilibrium configuration: Measurements of the angle 8 can be made on the creep specimens4'5 or on sheet material, as was done in this investigation by a method employing interference microscopy.= If the vapor pressure is low, the rate at which grain boundary grooves widen is determined primarily by surface diffusion and, to a lesser extent, by bulk diffusion. The surface diffusion coefficient, D,, is obtained from interferometric measurements of the groove width as a function of the annealing time, t. As predicted by Mullins~ and verified by experiment, the distance, w,, between the maxima of the humps formed on either side of the grain boundary increases in proportion to if grooving proceeds by surface diffusion alone. For this case: where fl is the atomic volume and n is the number of atoms per square centimeter of surface. When volume diffusion also contributes to the widening, the surface diffusion contribution can be extracted from the data by the method described by Mullins and shewmon.8 Where a pair of twin boundaries intersects a free surface, a groove with an included angle of A + B (using the groove figure and notations of Robertson and shewmong) forms by thermal etching at one twin boundary-free surface junction. If the "torque terms", i.e., the terms in the Herring10 equations describing the orientation dependence of the surface energy, are sufficiently large, an "inverted groove" with an included angle of 360 deg-A'-B' develops at the other intersection. The angles A + B and A' + B' are measured interferometrically. When the angle, , between the twinning plane and the macroscopic surface plane is near 90 deg, the twin boundary energy is calculated from the relation: 1) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Five-mil-diam wire containing 56 parts per million impurities was used for making ten creep specimens. These specimens had about 15 mm gage lengths with appended loops of wire and carried loads (the specimen weight below the midpoint of the gage length) ranging from 3.7 to 149.8 mg. The wires were hung inside a can made from 99.6 pct pure cobalt sheet. Beneath the wires were placed small specimens of 20-mil-thick, 99.9982 pct pure cobalt sheet from which the relative twin boundary and grain boundary energies and the surface diffusion coefficient were measured. All the specimens were annealed at a temperature of 1354" i 3°C which is 92 pct of the absolute melting point of cobalt. The furnace atmosphere was 99.9 pct pure hydrogen that was purified further by a Deoxo catalytic unit, magnesium perchlorate, and a liquid-nitrogen cold trap. I. INTRODUCTION. THIS cavern was discovered Oct. 22, 1904, by Mr. Charles H. Deutschman, in company with whom I made, May 29 to June 3, 1905, at the request of Mr. Howard Douglas, Superintendent of the Canadian National Parks, the first exploration of it for the Canadian government. The results were stated in a paper, orally presented, with lantern-views from my photographs, at the British Columbia Meeting of the Institute, Victoria,, B. C., July 5, 1905.* The present paper embodies also the results of a second examination, made Oct. 25 to 29, 1905. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, will serve as a guide to the following description. II. LOCATION. The cavern is situated at snow-line, at the head-waters of Cougar creek, on the west slopes of the Selkirks, about 2 miles north from Ross Peak water-tank, and 5.5 miles west from Glacier House, on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was then reached by an arduous climb from the water-tank, up the ravine of Cougar creek, for 8,000 ft. (2,000 ft. of altitude) over rock- and snow-slides, and through a thick tangle of alders. But an easy and very picturesque trail has, during the past summer, been opened by the government from Glacier House. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 represent views, not heretofore published, of the grand scenery of this region, so rapidly becoming the-object of attraction to thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. The Miami Copper Co., Arizona, is asking Congress to reimpose the import duty of two cents per pound on copper which, by law, has been suspended until June 30, 1950. C. Donald Dallas, chairman of Revere Copper and Brass, champion of a duty-free regime as regards the red metal, has been answering E. H. Westlake, Miami president, now that Mr. Westlake's statement to stock- holders has been salted away for posterity on wire recorders. Even prior to this action and at the instigation of two prominent consumers of pig lead, the House of Representatives has, in the confines of committee, not yet reported out, as of June 16, a bill to suspend the duty on lead for another year from expiration of the present law June 30, 1949. But apparently the bill was started too late. Thus the tariff issue becomes a Rip Van Winkle again after having slept for several years in the mountains of metals scarcity. During the wartime scarcity and the boom days that followed, most metal producers welcomed a considerable influx of foreign metal since it gave them a little surcease from constant teleibhone calls asking why that delivery of 300 tons of lead, 250 tons of zinc, and 1000 tons of copper had been delayed. These were the days when it was such an undisputed sellers' market that the sellers had even thrown away their certificates of ownership. The Bulletin. The Bulletin of the Institute will be issued hereafter monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates tin? membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will lie: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. Lt is probable that a supplementary session of this meeting, will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the farther discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. It is now reasonably certain that the XCVIIth meeting will be held oil the Pacific Coast, including a. visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en. route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. (lore definite information will be announced at the New Haven Meeting, or at the earliest possible date thereafter.

The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the lsabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.' Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test- runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the thee-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 1. The authors feel that the 12 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mill speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds.

The electrolytic copper refining process is an excellent method for producing high-purity metal for electric conductors and other demanding applications. However, the process involves very high capital expenditure, especially the amounts of metals bound in the process. Efforts have therefore been made for many years to increase the production rate by increasing the current density, without impairing the quality of the copper. One of the approaches has been to diminish the polarization by mechanical means, while another was to "polish" the cathode surface by periodic brief reversals of the current. Reversed current electrolysis was first developed for electro- plating purposes and in 1952 Boliden AB and the Dept. of Electrochemistry at the Royal Inst. of Tech., Stockholm tested the method for copper refining with good results. However, no suitable electrical equipment for current reversal was then available. The thyristor-controlled silicon rectifier became available during the '60s and provided the scope for industrial application of the process and the first large-scale development was made by the Bulgarian copper refinery in Pirdop. Many copper refineries are now studying or adapting the reverse current process. Further lab and pilot investigations have been carried out at Boliden AB during the past 4 years and these were mainly aimed at studying the optimization of factors influencing the quality of copper. A production unit containing two tank sections with a total of 56 cells and equipped with a rectifier for cur- rent reversal has been installed and will be started during 1973.

On Jan. 1, the office of the. National Service Committee was established at 502 McLachlen Building, Washington, D. C. The first work was to review current legislative information; which is being continued and good results are accomplished. Whenever matters of importance appear in the Congressional Record, notice thereof with such documents as are germane are forwarded to the members of the committee for their information and advice. The first formal report of the chairman was on the so-called Smith-Howard bill to secure Federal endowment for the establishment of engineering research. The chairman of the Committee, at the request of the Executive Committee of the Engineering Council, appeared before the Senate Committee on Education and Labor for the purpose of opposing those features of the so-called Kenyon bill which would create a practically permanent commission dominated by the Engineering Corps of the Army over all Federal engineering projects as well as state and municipal projects receiving Federal aid. The greater part of the time has been expended in correspondence and consultation on the matter of the establishment of a Department of Public Works. The results of this work lead to the belief that there is much promise of the establishing of such a department by the 66th Congress Hall members of engineering societies, as well as the societies themselves, will unanimously agree on and support a measure, and in order to secure such unanimous support, it will be advisable to call a conference of engineering societies. .

No. 347.-A South African development company will shortly require the services-of a mill superintendent, who has a general knowledge of concentration, particularly of flotation, and is able to take charge of a copper concentrator treating 15,000 tons per month and employing 200 natives and a small number of white men. Salary is £60 per month to start, and the company supplies furnished room or house, including free light, free water and free sanitary service, together with one native house servant. A contract will be made for 6 months, and notice of 3 months by 'either party will be required to terminate the engagement after 6 months. An allowance of £75 for-traveling expenses will be paid on arrival in South Africa to a single man, or £125 to a man who brings his family. Salary begins upon arrival in South Africa, and no allowance will be made for return traveling expenses. No. 349.-A Canadian university wishes to engage a man to teach non-ferrous metallurgy and ore-dressing as well as to direct research work. The instruction work covers 7 months but the research work is continued throughout the year. To a suitable man the rank of professor will be granted. Every engineer has occasion to trace or copy a map, plan, or other drawing on paper too thick for the ordinary way of using tracing-cloth or tracing-paper. When the figure is small and simple a copy may be made by holding the original against a window-pane, coverin& it with the paper, and tracing direct by the aid of the strong sunlight from outside. The need of utilizing this principle on a larger scale and in a more convenient position led Dr. J. C. Branner to plan the table of which the following is a description : This table was first made in the form of an adjustable glass-top table with a mirror beneath, in 1887, while Dr. Branner was State Geologist of Arkansas. Later it was modified as experience suggested until the form as here described was evolved. The device consists essentially of a drafting-table with a plate-glass top, upon which the original drawing and the paper are laid, and a mirror mounted underneath to reflect the light of the sky up through the drawing. The glass top is hinged and fitted with two arms and thumb-screws, so that it can be raised and fixed to any position, either inclined or horizontal. The mirror is pivoted and revolves about a horizontal axis, so that it may be tilted to any angle. The hood of cardboard or black cloth prevents the reflection of light from the tracing, and may or may not be attached to the table.

The subject of the supply and the quality of the iron-ore and coke of this State has suffered exaggeration and misrepresentation in both directions. Unsophisticated persons have made extraordinary reports of quality and richness, which could not be supported by facts; while, on the other hand, experts have selected inferior samples, and upon the average of these, which was not by any means the average known to our practice, have based comparisons favorable to other States. Our furnace-records give much better testimony as to the run of our ores, the calorific duty of our coke, and the burden and blast which it will bear. Some of them show poorer ore-mixtures than others; but it is safe to say that the Birmingham furnaces produce from 40 to 60 per cent.. of iron from a mixture of equal parts of the leanest and the richest ores, as classified in large quantities. And certain performances on record here, while they do not represent the regular or average practice, ma: be fairly urged as proof of excellence of raw material, since they would otherwise have been impossible, even as exceptional achievements. Thus oue of our furnaces has made iron with 2500 pounds of coke to the ton of 2300 pounds (Mr. Stratton, 1888); another, with a ton of coke to the ton of iron (Mr. Gordon, 1888); another, with 1.27 ton of coke to the ton (2300 pounds) of iron, the product in the last case being from

PENNSYLVANIA ANTHRACITE LOCAL SECTION On Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 1914, about 40 members of the Institute met at the Hotel Sterling, Wilkes Barre, Pa., for the purpose of discussing plans for the formation of a local section in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. President Rand; Prof. Joseph W. Richards, of the Board of Directors; Dr. H. M. Chance, Chairman of the Committee on Coal and Coke, and Secretary Stoughton were among the guests present. R. V. Norris acted as Master of Ceremonies, and the arrangements were all made in advance by a Committee under the leadership of Charles Enzian, to whom an enthusiastic vote of thanks was accorded at the dinner. An address was made by President Rand, followed by .Professor Richards, who outlined the procedure necessary for the formation of a Local Section. Addresses were then made by W. J. Richards, F. W. Chase,. C. F. Huber, R. J. Foster, F. A. Hill, H. M. Chance, Bradley Stoughton, and others, after which a rising vote was taken, and it was unanimously decided to petition the Board of. Directors for the establishment of the Pennsylvania -Anthracite Local Section. More than the required number of members then signed -the petition, and President Rand announced the appointment of a Committee to organize the Section and arrange for a meeting in accordance with their By-Laws, consisting of R. V. Norris, W. J. Richards, R. J. Foster, Edwin Ludlow, C. F. Huber, Charles Enzian, Douglas Bunting, F. A. Hill, and J. M. Humphrey.

Handling and transport of coal during the winter months can be a severe problem. The inability to unload frozen coal from rail cars produces serious economic and logistic problems due to transportation delays, rail car shortages, and demurrage on the rail cars. One method of dealing with the problem of unloading frozen coal has been to spray freeze conditioning agents onto the coal before it is loaded into rail cars. Both water soluble and oil based formulations have been used as freeze conditioning agents. The water soluble treatments generally contain a polyhydroxy alcohol, such as ethylene glycol, or salts of alkaline earth metals, such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, as freeze point depressants. The oil based treatments consist principally of hydrocarbons, such as No. 2 oil or diesel fuel. The authors' tests have shown significant differences in the effectiveness of these freeze conditioning agents, depending on the particular coal substrate being treated. These differences correlate with the coal porosity and inherent moisture of the substrate. In general, the greater the porosity of the coal, the smaller the effect of the freeze conditioning agents. Coal porosity has a greater impact on water soluble freeze conditioning agents than oil based products. The authors investigated the pore structure of a variety of coals using mercury intrusion. Findings were related to the effectiveness of different freeze conditioning agents as measured by unconfined compression strength tests. In general, coals with a large number of very small pores (between 0.05 µm and 0.03 µm) do not respond as well to freeze conditioning chemicals.

[ ] Utilizing tendencies for low grade ores in the Sudbury District of Ontario to cave after higher grade ore has been mined, International Nickel Co., of Canada, Ltd., is recovering millions of tons of nickel-copper ore once regarded as submarginal. Inco is working lower grade ore than ever mined before from its underground operations because of the caving method and metallurgical practices. In the caving method, blocks containing as much as 1.5 million tons of ore are undercut. As ore from the undercut block is withdrawn, the block to be mined breaks away and starts to disintegrate as it moves downward. Inco is also using the blasthole method, using explosives to break slices of harder, tougher ore from solid material. Inco has built a new concentrator at one of its most recent shafts for handling the increased tonnages of low grade ore. The concentrator presently has a 10,000-ton per day capacity, and is scheduled to be increased to 12,000 tons. Hoisting from the mine is by push-button control and the ore is milled on the spot. A 7 ½ -mile pipeline carries bulk concentrate to reduction plants at Copper Cliff. Giant crushers, weighing 165 tons each, have been installed underground. Twenty-ton electric locomotives haul ore to the crushers. The expansion program is expected to lift total annual production of nickel in the free world to 375 million pounds annually, an increase of 150 million pounds. Inco is presently mining more than 1 million tons of ore per month from combined surface and underground operations.

GENETIC correlations of the various types of Cheltenham fireclays found in Missouri have been the subject of several papers. The correlations usually have been attempted on the basis of stratigraphic and leaching patterns (Wheeler,18 1896; Allen, 1,2 1935 and 1937; McQueen,13 1943). Herold10 (1943), as well as Allen,l,2 has dealt at length with the mineral¬ogy of Missouri fireclays and postulates genetic relationships from min¬eralogical findings. Both researchers cite kaolinite as the primary clay mineral of the Cheltenham formation and suggest that differences in physical proper¬ties are due to clay mineral impurities such as halloysite or illite (not recog¬nized by the name "illite" at the time of Allen's papers). By ascribing the differences to impurities, it is possible to use weathering as the only major alteration factor. This paper seeks to probe still farther into the clay mineral composition of the Cheltenham formation and to show thereby that the mineralogical differ¬ences that have been found to exist within the "kaolinite" component of the Cheltenham fireclay may alter somewhat the previously held theories of diagenesis. Two Missouri fireclays, which have been rather thoroughly investigated, were chosen for comparison of genetic relationship to clay mineral content. One is a typical plastic fireclay of the middle Cheltenham (McQueen's classification13) obtained at Mexico, Audrian County, Missouri, from a large open pit operated by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. The other-a typical hard flint fireclay-was obtained from a pocket deposit in southwestern Mont¬gomery County, Missouri.

INTRODUCTION Grinding control is currently the most publicized control subject in the minerals industry. Flotation control and crushing control have not as yet received the widespread attention that grinding control has. The primary reasons for this center around the high capital costs of grinding equipment and the fact that grinding mills are extremely energy inefficient. In a typical copper concentrator the energy requirements to produce refined copper are: (1) [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Mining4.93 x 10817.3 Mineral Processing9.63 x 10833.8 Smelting and Refining13.9 x 10848.9] One-third of the total energy used for copper production is for mineral processing. A breakdown of this energy into process steps yields the following: [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Crushing and Grinding 7.16 x 108 73.8 Flotation 0.76 x 108 7.8 Materials Handling1.78 x 10818.4] It is apparent that comminution operations consume the largest proportion of the energy for processing and as such become major targets for improvements in efficiency. Unfortunately, size reduction operations are extremely inefficient. Efficiency calculations for grinding range from less than 0.1% to about 5% depending on the evaluation criteria. Because of these facts, grinding control has been and will continue to be the focus of major process control efforts. OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS All benefits achieved as the result of grinding control are derived from modifying physical parameters which improve the efficiency of the grinding mill. METALLURGISTS - or at least metals - have been of central importance in most of the inventions that have shaped the course of man's history. From the first Bronze Age tools to the iron armor of the Roman soldier, the cannon, cast type for printing, the steam engine, the electric motor and modern electronic devices, technological progress has revolved around some particular property or comb nation of properties selected from the metallurgist's repertory. The recent utilization of the energy of the atomic nucleus (currently for military purposes alone but with great constructive implications for the future) is no exception to this, although the use of uranium and plutonium in metallic form is of secondary importance, since the significant properties are those of the nucleus and not of the electrons responsible for metallic behavior. THE METALLURGIST AND ATOMIC ENERGY The metallurgist has a role of central importance to play in the future development of atomic energy. Not only must he make and shape the fissionable materials themselves, but he must also develop auxiliary materials to withstand the extreme conditions imposed on nuclear reactor components by the high heat-transfer rates needed for efficient utilization of the fuel and by the perplexing but interesting effects of radiation on the structure and properties of materials. It is doubtful if there is currently any other field potentially more rewarding to a young metallurgist.
