Industry has for many years recognized the dependence of certain mechanical and physical properties. as well as workability, upon grain size variations in brass. Although the dependence of properties upon grain size has been recognized there are not many instances where a planned program of testing has been conducted and where the only intentional variable has been grain size. In particular the literature is limited with respect to the effect of grain size on the endurance limit, though there are many industrial applications where the brasses are subjected to cycles of repetitive stresses. Literature A number of the physical and mechanical properties of a given brass sheet, in the annealed condition, will depend upon: (I) The ready-to-finish grain size before final rolling, (2) the percentage deformation by cold working, and (3) the time and temperature of annealing. The first and second variables affect the recrystallized grain size, and the third variable affects the coalesced grain size. Gibbsl has shown the effect of two different ready-to-finish grain sizes upon the tensile strength and hardness of deep drawing brass strip after a definite amount of cold rolling. The smaller the ready-to-finish grain size, the higher the tensile strength and hardness, but with lowered ductility, Gibbs also demonstrated, for a given time and temperature of anneal, that the tensile strength, hardness, and elastic limit are higher for the smaller ready-to-finish grain size, but the elongation is lowered. Townsend and Greena112 have reported data which show that cold working increases the tensile strength, hardness, and load carrying ability of deep drawing brass sheet under reversed stress. Greenall and Gohn3 have reported data which show that the smaller grain sizes have higher tensile strength and hardness properties, and the data also show that increased cold working increases the tensile strength and hardness properties of deep drawing brass sheet. Kommers4 has reported data for tests of brass of known ready-to-finish grain size, a specific amount of cold reduction, and annealed at different temperatures above and below the recrystallization temperature. Kommers' results indicate that annealing below the recrystallization temperature does not change the tensile strength and hardness properties, but the endurance limit may be increased from 22,000 to 28,000 psi. The present investigation has three principal purposes: 1. To develop a method for measuring hydrogen embrittlement that avoids cer, tain errors complicating previously used methods. 2. To explore in a preliminary way some of the fundamental factors controlling embrittlement. 3. To apply the measurements specifically to stainless grades of steel, whose sensitivity or insensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement has never been clearly defined. Selecting a Test Method Hydrogen embrittlement is a condition of low ductility resulting from excessive absorption of hydrogen by the steel at some period in its history, and may be revealed by almost any test involving cold deformation. Tensile tests, impact tests, and bend tests are commonly used for detecting hydrogen embrittlement; although numerous other tests, such as cold-upsetting or extrusion, could be used. The simplicity of using a wire specimen for cathodic and acid pickling tests, and the especial adaptability of the bend test to wire specimens, led to selection of the bend test for the present research. Bend tests usually have been of three general types: (I) fatigue, (2) reversed bend, and (3) single bend. The first two types, though widely used, are inaccurate because their measurements are counteracted by an aging effect; and the third type has not been developed to its fullest utility. The effect of cold-working in removing hydrogen is well known. During a bend test hydrogen can be observed escaping from the convex side simply by coating the specimen with oil; and any technique employing flexing or reverse bending may therefore have its measurements masked because the mechanical action reduces the embrittlement during the test. This factor is so important that even elastic flexing of a hydrogen-charged wire specimen should be avoided before testing if accurate measurements are desired. Developing a Machine for Measuring Hydrogen Embrittlement As for the single-bend test, its theory is good, and recovery caused by mechanical work is kept to a minimum. With a given degree of hydrogen embrittlement, a specimen will break at a given angle if the bending is applied unidirectionally and uniformly. The radius of the bend must be kept constant; and the rate of bending should be a constant, slow enough to allow reading of the breaking angle, and yet rapid enough to prevent significant recovery from the escape of hydrogen during bending. A simple apparatus (Fig. I) was constructed using a type H Foxboro drive unit A, which is a synchronous motor with a gear-reduction ratio of 600 to I. R. F. McELVENNY.- The next item is: "Center and other methods, vs. side charging." That was all discussed in the Carson case, and I do not know but what many of the plants are still using center charging. Some are using side charging. Did I understand that where you use the wet charge it is all side charging on the wet ore? B.-G. C. HONEYMAN.- We were on center charging for about a year with wet ore. R. F. McELVENNY.- Then you went to side charging. Has anyone any remarks to make on side versus center charging? E. A. BARNARD.- We have one side and one center, both on deep bath. It is an experimental proposition so far, but the side charge looks very favorable.. R. F. McELVENNY.- This is with calcine? E. A. BARNARD.- This is with calcine on a floating charge proposition.. They are both water jacket. The charge acts very similar on both center and side charging. The calcine spreads much the same as it does on the center charge. It will run down 75 ft. on the furnace side as well as the center. The advantage is in taking care of secondaries and things of that nature. C. BARDWELL.- Do you get any side wall protection from it? E. A. BARNARD.- No. R. F. McKENZIE.- Do you not project the side wall up to protect the skewback? E. A. BARNARD.- There is a slot projection down around the top of the bath; but the repairs on the side wall have been practically the same; that is, they, have been practically the same as they have on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- A point I would like to make is that if you have any doubt about the center charging, we feel that we get better tonnages and lower fuel ratios and better slags with center charging than we ever got with side. Different kinds of charges would, of course, vary, and I could readily see that if you had the same advantage with deep bath smelting that you mention you would probably get just as good a slag and as good fuel ratios. E. A. BARNARD.- In fact, I think the calcine charge spreads more on the side than on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- If you maintain a deep bath. E. A. BARNARD.- That is one thing we have to be careful about, to hold the charge back.

KAISER Bauxite Co., a subsidiary of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., has been mining and shipping Jamaican bauxite for over a year. On Feb. 10, 1953 the first boat load of bauxite left Port Kaiser, Jamaica, for the company's alumina plant at Baton Rouge, La. To provide its own source of the aluminum ore, a Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. exploration party started initial reconnaissance in 1947. This work, and subsequent exploration, led to the acquisition of reserves sufficient to warrant a full-scale mining operation for several decades.

FROM the primary gyratory crushing plant, described in MacLeod's article, ore is delivered to a large storage or surge bin from which it is carried by two transverse conveyors to the secondary crushing plant. The bin has a useful drawoff of about 13,000 tons, this being slightly over one half of the initial daily capacity of the Morenci Reduction Works. This arrangement provides sufficient storage to permit intermittent operation of the primary and secondary crushing plants without too close a coordination between the two.

They may not remember the time when "practical oil men" opposed the invasion of engineers into the field of petroleum production. By their excellent contributions they established themselves. In the popular mind, engis veers are practical men whereas physicists and chemists are suspected of being theoretical. It will be best to annihilate this misconception right now at the beginning of a closer relationship between petroleum engineers. geophysicists, and geochemists.

Numerous designs of linings and accessories, including dams, lifters, and heat exchangers, contribute greatly to kiln efficiencies. Greater conductivity is achieved with basic brick than with fireclay and high-alumina refractories, depending largely upon the use of steel plates in radial joints between adjacent brick to increase heat transfer through the lining. Refractory lifters expose all portions of the load to radiant or convective heat and raise some portions to higher temperatures by cascading the load down through the path of the hot gases.

The Batac jig is a newly-designed Baum-type jig for coal washing. Multiple air changes directly under the bed permit uniform distribution of air pulsations, giving greater capacity and more accurate separation than standard Baum jigs. It is equipped with a new concept of air valves, automatically and electrically controlled, permitting infinite variation in jigging pulsations. It can be used for either coarse or fine coal cleaning. Sharp separations and high organic efficiencies are obtained at separation densities above 1.45 specific gravities.

The Tooele plant is situated at the mouth of Pine Canyon, five miles northeast of Tooele City. The site forms one terminus of the Tooele Valley railway, which runs southwest through Tooele City to Warner, a station on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, thirty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City. An aerial tramway, four miles in length, crosses the Oquirrh mountains and connects the plant with the Bingham district. The plant consists of a lead-zinc flotation concentrator, lead smelter and copper smelter.

THE electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune, Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer, Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack, Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Kochendörffer and others.1 The writer of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray to white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (SiC) and graphite (C). In this work, he has found the curious phenomenon of barium- carbonate.

I. INTRODUCTORY. THE plans for the investigation of fuels and structural materials now being conducted by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey were, before being decided upon by the Director of the Survey, submitted for consideration to the National Advisory Board, upon which there are nine representatives from the membership of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, viz.: Messrs. John Hays Hammond, Robert W. Hunt, B. F. Bush, and E. V. d'Invilliers (representing the Institute); Messrs. Julian Kennedy and C. S. Robinson (representing the Iron and Steel Institute); Dr. Charles B. Dudley (representing the American Society for Testing Materials); Mr. F. H. Newell (representing the U. S. Reclamation Service); and Dr. Richard Moldenke (representing the American Foundrymen's Association). It seems fitting, therefore, that a report of these investigations of the past three years should be submitted to the Institute for publication in its Transactions. The above, together with other representatives of the national engineering societies and allied organizations, were invited by President Roosevelt to serve, along with the Chiefs of the several Government Bureaus who have charge of public works and large. fuel purchases, on the National Advisory Board to give advice concerning these investigations. The appointment of this National Board grew out of a wish on the part of the President, the Secretary of the Interior, and the Director of the Geological Survey not only that the appropriations for these investigations be expended in a manner most beneficial to the several branches of the government

DURING the last six years, there have been many extensive investigations of the fatigue of metals. The major work of 'these investigations has been the determination of constants for fatigue strength of wrought ferrous metals; but during the past year or two there have become available considerable test data on the fatigue strength of certain nonrferrous metals, including copper, brass, bronze, nickel, copper-nickel alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, magnesium and magnesium alloys. It is not proposed to give here extensive quantitative tables of test results; for such tables, reference is made to the published data of various laboratories. The following general conclusions, however, seem to be fairly well established: 1. The phenomenon known as "fatigue" of metal really a progressive fracture of metals. A minute (probably submicroscopic) crack is formed in the metal, the internat stress, is intensified at the ends' of the crack, and under successive applications of load the crack spreads like a minute hacksaw cut until there is not enough sound metal left in the cross-section of the piece to stand the load. applied, and then failure occurs suddenly. 2. For wrought ferrous metals, there is .a limiting intensity of stress (as computed by the ordinary formulas of mechanics of materials) below which, a metal is able to withstand an indefinitely large number of repetitions of stress without failure. This limiting stress is known as the "endurance limit or the fatigue limit.? For reversed flexure, the endurance limit for. wrought ferrous metals is usually not far from 50 per cent. of the ultimate tensile strength.

OREGON SCHOOL OF MINES SOCIETY The Oregon School of Mines Society held a special meeting, January 2S, 1918. Mr. Thos. Varley, Superintendent of the Northwest Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, at Seattle, Wash., addressed the Society. He discussed, in some detail, the development and work of the United States Bureau of Mines, and gave a brief resume of the conditions affecting the "war minerals" on the Pacific Coast. About forty members were present and thoroughly appreciated Mr. Varley's address.

The papers that appear on pages 326 through 367 were presented at two joint meetings of the Mineral Industry Education Division, Geophysics Committee, the American Geophysical Union and the Committee on College Curricula of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, at the A.I.M.E. meeting in New York on Feb. 17 and 18, 1941. At the first meeting, the Mining Geology Committee, the Society of Economic Geologists and the Committee on Applications of Geology of the ilmerican Association of Petroleum Geologists also took part.
