FRED TURRELL GREENE Fred Turrell Greene was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., Nov. 22, 1872. His father, William A. Greene, was born in Providence, R. I., and his mother, Angenora Semlear, was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. Fred's early school clays were spent in Boston, whence his father moved to Canada in 1882. Attending first the Collegiate Institute in Toronto, .then the High School at Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario, where he graduated, Fred progressed to the Toronto University and the Michigan College of Mines, at Houghton, where lie graduated in 1897. He secured employment almost immediately at Butte with the engineering force of the Boston & Montana Consolidated Silver Mining Co., under Chas. S. Batterman. In 1899 he went to Rossland, B. C., where he spent more than a year as mining engineer and assistant superintendent of the War Eagle Consolidated Mining and Development Co. and the Center Star Mining Company Ltd. Returning to Butte in 1900, he acted as assistant geologist for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. until 1906, when he filled a similar position in St. Paul with the Great Northern Railway for about two years. From 1908 until his tragic death on Christmas day, 1917, his headquarters were in Butte, where he enjoyed an excellent reputation -as consulting mining engineer, with a rapidly widening circle of clients. During the past four years he had been consulting engineer for the Elm Orlu and other mines controlled by Hon. W. A. Clark, and was in charge of underground developments and law-suit preparations for the celebrated apex case between the Elm Orlu and the Butte & Superior companies. At the time of his death he was in charge of similar work for the Utah Metals Co., in connection with their mines at Bingham, Utah. He was also for some years active in the Coeur d'Alenes, as consulting geologist for the Federal and other companies there, and was considered an authority on this as well as the Butte district. Mr. Greene was unmarried, and is survived by his parents, a younger brother, who is in the army, and one sister, Mrs. James A. Hatch, of New York. Some of the most important and valuable ideas regarding the nature and origin of copper ores have originated in Butte, since that district is not only one of the greatest examples of mineralization known in any land, but has gone through a long course of mining litigation, and was, one of the first to be studied intensively by geologists. In connection with the early investigations, as well as with the most recent in that camp, Mr. Greene played an important part. His conscientious devotion to his duties and his intelligent handling of the problems presented for solution sufficiently explain the esteem in which he was held by his employers and his professional associates.

Electron microscope evidence which indicates that TaC may precipitate at random sites in the matrix is presented. Initially the particles are almost spherical and coherent with the matrix. However, as they grow in conditions in which there are insufficient vacancies to relieve lattice strain, the particles rapidly lose coherency in two directions and continue to grow as plates with approximately the full lattice mismatch strain present perpendicular to the plane of the plate. The necessary relief of strain comes from dislocations loops which do not become visible until the later stages of aging. The rapid decrease of apparent strain to low values of appoximately 1 pct at small particle sizes arises not from a complete incoherency but from applying a model wrong for the particle shape and strain distribution. PREVIOUS work has shown that MC-type carbides may precipitate intragranularly in austenitic stainless steel on dislocations,1&apos;2 in association with stacking faults,3&apos;4 and randomly through the matrix,5-7 In investigations of the matrix precipitate by thin-foil electron microscopy, considerable lattice strain has been found to occur around the precipitating phase.7&apos;8 Attempts have been made to evaluate the amount of lattice strain by using the methods developed by Ashby and brown.9,10 Values of the linear strain, much less than the 17 pct theoretical mismatch (for TaC), have been reported; it has been suggested that this is due to either a loss of coherency1&apos; or vacancy absorption which occurs during either the initial nucleation or growth of the precipitate." This report is an extension of earlier work7 that dealt with the precipitation of TaC from an 18Cr/12Ni/ 2Ta/O.lC alloy after it had been quenched from 1300°C and aged between 600" and 840°C. In particular, the shape of the precipitate particles and the amount of strain in the matrix, due to the precipitate, have been studied. The work described here is part of a wider investigation of factors that affect carbide precipitation in austenitic stainless steel," details of which are to appear elsewhere. RESULTS The present investigation can be conveniently split into two aspects of the strain-fields surrounding the matrix particles: 1) information derived from the strain-field which indicates the shape and habit plane of the precipitate particles and 2) the magnitude and sign of the strain-field. The Shape and Habit Plane of the TaC Precipitate. In the early stages of aging twin lobes (normally black F. H. FROES, formerly at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England, is Staff Scientist, Colt Industries, Crucible Materials Research Center, Pittsburgh, Pa. D. H. IMD on white background, i.e., for the deviation parameter, S > 0) that indicate the strained region of the matrix define the position of the particles by bright field transmission electron microscopy. The actual particles were not detected until they were approximately 120Å diam; below this size they were too small to be imaged in the electron microscope. This meant that particle growth that had occurred before this stage had to be inferred from the matrix strain-field contrast. In all cases when diffraction effects were observed from the precipitate particles, a cube-cube orientation relationship (i.e., (llO)ppt Il<llO>matrix and {1ll }ppt {III} matrix) existed between the precipitate and the matrix. From the matrix precipitate particles lying along edge-on {111} planes (e.g., at A, Fig. I), the precipitates are seen to be plate-like with their diameter being roughly 18 times their thickness after 5000 hr at 650°C. However, the exact shape of the particles cannot be determined because of the masking effect of the strain-field contrast. If a dark-field micrograph, using a precipitate reflection, is studied, Fig. 2, a number of the projected images of the TaC particles [on the (110) foil surface] apear to have straight edges parallel to projected f111) planes. Thus, it appears that in the later stages of aging the TaC particles are plate-like with some tendency for the edges of the plate to be bounded by the matrix close-packed {ill} planes (though the general shape of the particles in the plane of the plate is circular and thus the "diameter" of the particles has a real physical significance). It should be noted that the bands of fine discrete particles observed in Figs. 1 and 2 are not the matrix precipitate discussed in this paper but are precipitates associated with extrinsic stacking faults3j4 occurring on (111) matrix planes. **£** ****** \ *x 23 Fig. 1—18/12/2~a/0.1~ alloy. The presence of gas in coal mines necessitates the use of costly ventilation arrangements and the use of expensive mining methods. On the other hand, the gas itself in many instances is of considerable intrinsic value, and its separate recovery might conceivably be a profitable undertaking. This paper is concerned with a study of the movement of gas in coal strata with the object of determining the laws governing gas movement and thus making at least a preliminary step toward the solution of the more practical problem of its control or recovery. Naturally, so important a subject has received much attention from scientists and engineers. In most cases, however, the studies have been concerned with the origin1$, the amount" the composition3 and the method of retention4 of the gas in coal; or, from the more practical side, have been concerned with the phenonlena and conditions associated with outbursts5 or explosions and their control. Numerous studies also have been made of the permeability of coal to gas" of gas pressures measured in coal seams, etc. The authors are unaware, however, of any attempt to present a consistent or complete picture of the laws governing the movement of gas through the coal. Study in West Virginia A recent study conducted at this University7 gives the first presentation of the distribution of pressures in a small section of a coal seam. Holes were drilled into the coal rib to various depths and at various distances from the coal face. The location selected for study was as remote as possible from disturbing influences of mining operations, faults, "wants," etc. The pipes extending into the coal that were used to determine pressures were grouted into the borehole for the entire depth of the hole, and great precaution was taken to insure accurate pressure readings. The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. Soon after the initiation in Belgium, the process was introduced into England, where subsequent, investigation developed similar processes, which were successfully used in

THE Institute of Mining Engineers has shown so much interest in the educational problem of profitably combining theory and practice, that it seems especially appropriate to lay before its members the methods and aims of the mining laboratory of which I have charge, and in which one form of combination of hand with head work is now being tried. If anything may be contributed toward the solution of this problem by the discussion which follows, my purpose will be attained. Whether it was wise or not to establish a mining school so far from the principal mining centres, does not now enter into the question. Given, a mining school already begun, how shall it be made most efficient in developing engineers who are trained to think for themselves as well as versed in the works of others? This is the ques¬tion with which we have had to deal. In considering the bearing of this laboratory work upon the students&apos; preparation, it will be convenient to take it up under five different heads 1. The methods and aims of the laboratory. 2. The advantage to students of having a part, at least, of their practical work in the curriculum of their school. 3. The advantage to be derived by mines and works. 4. Degree of accuracy which may be attained in working ores on a small scale. 5. Results of work in the laboratory. 1. The Methods and Aims of the Laboratory.-During the May meeting of 1873, held in Boston, I had the privilege of reading before you a paper stating the plans and aims of this laboratory. Since that time we have been constantly following out those plans, and are more than ever convinced that we are working in the right direction. We do not feel that the time we have spent has been in any sense thrown away. Perhaps the aims of the laboratory can be most clearly shown by illustration. Many young engineers leave school thinking that they know everything. They go to the works, and expect to teach the superintendent something and the men a good deal, regardless of the fact that it is this spirit that has prejudiced workmen against schoolmen. The Magma copper vein trends east-west, dips 70" south, and cuts through a 6000-ft thickness of limestones, quartzites,. shale, diabase, and schist. The vein is itself a fault with a horizontal offset of 500 ft on the formation contacts in the two walls. There are two principal faults of large displacement and numerous smaller steep and flat faults that complicate the prediction of ore occurrence. A study of the geology, its systematic recording to facitliate ready reference, and graphic methods of interpretation of mineralization have aided the exploration, development, 2nd mining of the ore. In making predictions of the distribution of mineable ore bodies and their shape in critical areas, studies are made of "mineralization contours" and "mineralization trends," which are developed on a longitudinal section of the vein from variations in the concentration of the combined base metal content as shown by assays of available openings in the mine. Introduction This paper describes an example of geological work applied directly to mining and exploration problems in a deep vein deposit, and it is presented as being of interest especially to those engaged in working more or less similar veins. In 1944 to 1945 the writer spent a year as assistant to J. K. Gustafson in a thorough geological examination of the Magma mine. Much of the writer&apos;s subsequent independent work described in the present paper had its inception in ideas originated by Gustafson during that examination. Objectives of Geological Work at Magma Mine The objectives of geological work at Magma, as at operating vein mines of a similar nature, can be summarized as follows: 1. Direct assistance to the mining department by means of predictions as to the size, shape, grade, and location of ore bodies; by solution of fault problems and irregularities in the veins; by prepara-?ion of detailed ore-reserve estimates in specific areas; by keeping a complete record of the geology and assay results in the mine; and by guiding development work. In short, geology can aid in the realization of the prime purpose of the mining department, which is that of producing the greatest amount of ore in the most economical and expeditious manner possible. 2. Guidance for exploration, especially diamond drilling, in undeveloped areas of the mine. 3. Contributions to the understanding of the general geology of the deposit and its regional setting, including ore genesis, structure, and mineral relationships. A new electrical logging method is described which measures the resistivity of small volumes of material near and behind the wall of the bore holes. The very small electrode systems used are supported in the face of the flexible insulator pad of appropriate dimension maintained in contact with the wall. The measurements are recorded simultaneously with two different electrode spacings. This method provides a very detailed record of the formations and particularly of the permeable beds traversed by the bore holes. The application of MicroLog to the location of permeable zones within compact formaltions, such as limestone, and to the determination of the amount of sand existing in sequences of thin shale and sand streaks is discussed. The possibility of quantitative determination, providing a step toward the evaluation of formation porosity and mud cake thickness, is also examined. Field examples illustrate the essential features of the method. INTRODUCTION In conventional electrical logging, the spontaneous potential (SP) log is used to delineate the permeable beds, and the resistivity logs are used primarily to provide indications concerning the fluid content of the beds. When the formations are much more resistive than the mud, as happens, for example, in limestone fields, the SP currents are short-circuited by the more conductive mud column, with the result that the SP log is quite rounded. In that case, the SP log generally gives the approximate location of the permeable formations but it cannot be used for an accurate determination of the boundaries of each permeable bed.&apos; Solutions for the problem of obtaining a better determination of the permeable beds in limestone fields were developed from two angles. One approach consisted in improvements to the logging of the SP, as given by Selective SP logging and Static SP logging. These new methods, which have been described in an earlier paper,&apos; give good results when the mud is not too salty, but they are still in a somewhat experimental stage, mostly because the development efforts have lately been concentrated on another approach to the problem, i.e., the MicroLog.

The Berlin gold-quartz mine is situated in Nye county, Nevada, on the west flank of the Shoshone range, about 40 miles south and 30 miles west from the town of Austin, the county-seat of Lander county. The distance from Austin is about 60 miles by stage-road. The outcrop of the vein, at the top of the incline-shaft, is situated just at the base of the mountain proper, almost exactly at the intersection of the mountain-side with the gravelly bench that slopes for about three-quarters of a mile to the flatter sage-brush plain, or desert valley, below. The vein itself consists almost entirely of quartz, with perhaps 2 per cent. of sulphide of iron, copper, lead, zinc and antimony, and perhaps a trace of some of the compounds of tellurium with gold and silver, although none of the latter have been as yet positively identified. The relative proportion, by weight, of silver and gold in the ores, varies in different parts of the vein, from 12 silver for 1 of gold, to 7 silver for 1 of gold. The quartz vein-filling is usually frozen fast to the walls, and is very hard and compact, seldom showing the friable, fissured, or shelly structure often to be found in quartz-veins. Comparatively little evidence of relative motion of one wall of the vein upon the other is to be found—a fact indicating that during the formation of the vein, and prior to the extensive movements herein described, little disturbance had taken place. No evidence whatever of metasomatic origin has been observed. On the other hand, occasional occurrences of comby structure, in which the axes of the quartz-crystals are at right angles to the plane of the vein, rather indicate deposition from solution in a pre-existing fissure. Studies were made on the system iron plus alumina. Various methods of dispersing and various amounts of alumina were used. Powder metallurgy techniques were used to produce the final product. Microstructures and some mechanical properties are presented. Alloys containing up to 16 pct alumina by weight are ductile at all temperatures tested. The ivon-alumina materials have a higher yield stress and improved creep resistance over that of pure iron. SINCE the development of SAP&apos; an A1- Al2O3 powder metallurgy product, great interest has been shown in the development of a SAP-like structure in metals and alloys other than aluminum. The outstanding properties of this class of materials are: 1) Good creep resistance at high temperature. 2) High yield strengths and high hardness at high temperatures. 3) High recrystallization temperature. However, the lack of ductility and formability has thus far limited the applications of SAP-like materials. The following report deals with methods of dispersing A12O3 in Fe, processing of powders into rod, structures produced after processing, and mechanical properties of the iron-alumina material produced. Methods of dispersing the alumina and also the volume fraction of alumina added were varied. MATERIAL Powder Processing— Four methods of obtaining dispersions of alumina in iron were studied. 1) Oxidation-reduction of a Fe + 8 pct Al alloy. .2) Coprecipitation of Fe(OH)3 + Al(OH)3 from aqueous solution. 3) Colloidal mixing of Fe,O3 and Al2O3. 4) Colloidal mixing of Fe powder and A1,O3. Fig. 1 is a processing flowsheet which outlines the processing steps taken to produce a final extruded bar 1/4 in. in diameter and about 30 in. long. The - 100 mesh iron-aluminum alloy was oxidized by placing a thin layer of powder on an alumina plaque. The reduction step was modified to include 1/2 hr at 1000°C since the powders tended to become pyro-phoric unless sintered slightly after low-temperature reduction. Compacting was done in a 1-1/8-in.-diam pressing die. The slugs produced averaged 1 in. in length. The billets were encased in low-carbon steel cans shown schematically in Fig. 2. The blank is included for structure and property comparison purposes. TESTING PROCEDURE All tests were made on as-extruded material.

(communication to the Secretary*) :--Mr. Vivian&apos;s paper is interesting as an evidence of renewed attempts to solve the problem of adapting the centrifugal machine to the uses of the metallurgist. It would not seem that the Gee machine has solved the problem, because it is manifestly of use only with quite high-grade material, since low-grade pulp could not stand the cost of treatment by a discontinuous process. The mechanism, however, would seen to accomplish grading more perfectly than the ordinary centrifugal basket. This is an entirely different thing from concentration, which is intended to yield a finished marketable product. The real problem is to design a successful continuous centrifugal machine. Ten years or snore ago a machine, which might be described as having an inverted step-basket, offered much promise, and was constructed and tested at considerable cost, but it presented insuperable difficulties. The construction of a successful continuous centrifugal would be welcomed by the whole industrial world, since its uses would be most extensive. Mr. Vivian suggests the utilization of the centrifugal machine as a substitute for slime filters in the cyanide process, but he, has apparently not tried the experiment. I tested the efficiency of centrifugal machines for this purpose in 1897-8, having to extract the cyanide solution from a highly argillaceous slime of the sticky kind which the Mexican call ?lama." Our filter-presses yielded cakes containing usually :30 per cent. of moisture, and so dense as to preclude washing. The centrifugal machine readily Brought the moisture content down to 9 per cent. and permitted fairly successful washing. In its effort to combat waterlogging and soil salinity, the Water and Soils Investigation Division of WAPDA (West Pakistan&apos;s Water and Power Development Authority) has carried out an extensive program of test drilling andwater sampling since 1954. Data collected during the past ten years have permitted the delineation of fresh and saline groundwater zones in the Punjab Plain. Fresh groundwater containing generally less than 500 ppm of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of fresh-water recharge. Locally, fresh groundwater extends to depths of 1500 ft and more. Saline groundwater occurs down gradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the lower central parts of the interfluvial areas, and presumably underlies most of the Punjab Plain. The groundwaters of the Punjab are characterized by their evolution from calcium, magnesium bicarbonate waters near sources of recharge to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in the Dera Ismail Khan District, sodium sulfate waters predominate. The pattern of distribution of saline groundwater zones and the observed gradual increase in mineral content, down gradient from sources of recharge, can be explained best by a hypothesis stressing the process of evaporation from the water table and solution of minerals within the alluvial aquifer. In 1954, detailed groundwater surveys in the Punjab Plain were initiated by WASID, the Water and Soils Investigation Division of West Pakistan&apos;s Water and Power Development Authority. The investigations, undertaken under a cooperative agreement between the governments of Pakistan and the United States, were aimed at the formulation of reclamation measures to improve waterlogged and saline soils, and to assess the groundwater potential of the Punjab and other areas of West Pakistan. The nature and urgency of WASID&apos;s primary task limited the exploration of the alluvial aquifer generally to its uppermost part. About 1030 test holes drilled in 47,000 sq miles of the Punjab defined the nature of the alluvium to depths of about 600 ft and yielded data on water quality to 400 or 500 ft. A report on the hydrology of the Punjab, based on the results of these investigations was published by WASID in 1963.&apos; The present report incorporates data obtained by WASID since 1962 in a program of deep test drilling in the Punjab and the adjacent areas of Bahawalpur and Dera Ismail Khan District, permitting the definition of fresh and saline groundwater zones to depths of 1500 ft in some areas. Groundwater in the Punjab Plain is contained in alluvial deposits, predominantly sand and silt, which extend almost everywhere to depths of 1000 ft and more. The alluvium has been deposited by the Indus River and its tributaries since late Tertiary time and is contiguous with similar deposits in India. The Indo-Gangetic Plain extends from the foothills of the Himalayas to the ancient rocks of the Peninsular Shield in central India and to the ocean. Gradients are generally very low and range from about 1% ft per mile in the upper part of the plain to less than 1 ft per mile in the south and southwest. The monotony of the alluvial plain is broken by scattered bedrock outcrops in two of the interfluvial areas, Chaj Doab and Rechna Doab. The bedrock hills are projections of the northwest-trending Delhi-Shahpur Ridge that is largely buried by alluvium. The rocks of the buried ridge, presumably of Precambrian age, are essentially impermeable and define the lower limit of the alluvial aquifer in parts of Chaj, Rechna, and Bari doabs. Elsewhere in the Punjab, there are no outcrops of other consolidated rocks and their presence below the alluvium is conjectural. The principal areas of bedrock outcrops, near Kirana and Sangla, are shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The movement of groundwater through the alluvial aquifer of the Punjab has been described by Green-man and others.&apos; In most of the area, the pre-irriga-tion water table sloped from the rivers downstream and toward the central axes of the doabs, indicating that the rivers were sources of groundwater recharge. THE American producers of silver are keenly alive to the importance of the silver problem and its vital effect on the mining industry in Montana and other States where precious-metal mining constitutes a basic industry. There are so many ramifications to the subject that one is tempted, no matter from what angle an approach is made, to digress along lines that inevitably lead into a maze of social, economic and financial problems, through which no clear pathway is marked, and regard¬ing which no definite opinion can be expressed, as the ultimate solution is dependent upon the policies adopted and carried out by the more important Governments with reference to their fiscal requirements and currency systems. The situation may be summarized in two questions First, what, if any, plan have the silver producers, as being the most directly interested, to offer in meeting the situation which will confront the industry upon the termination of purchases of domestic silver under the Pittman Act? Second, what, if any, assistance can be extended by the Government in connection with the problem? In answer to the first inquiry, while the matter has been the subject of discussion among the principal producers, they have been unable to formulate a defi-nite plan, principally because they have been and are dealing with a subject embracing many unknown fac-tors; and second, it has been felt that before any plan is adopted there should be indicated the extent to which cooperation on the part of the Government may be depended upon to enable a proper study of the situation to be made. In order to explain these rather cryptic statements, a general review of the situation may aid. Whatever differences of opinion there may have been in the past upon the subject of bi-metallism or the establishment of a fixed ratio between the coinage value of gold and silver, it will probably be conceded that it would be neither wise nor expedient to attempt a revival of this discussion, nor to undertake to solve the question by the adoption of such a remedy. Issues of contro-versial economics must be avoided, if possible-political economics will destroy rather than assist constructive effort.

Knowledge of the relative floatability of silicate minerals is increasing in importance as flotation is being applied to the concentration of nonsulfides. Many silicates are in themselves commercial products amenable to concentration by flotation. Moreover, the selective flotation of other nonsulfide minerals, such as cassiterite, depends largely upon the floatability of associated gangue silicates. Differences in floatability existing between the various silicates have not- been sufficiently appreciated; for example, the feldspars that differ greatly in floatability have generally been merely treated as "feldspar." It was the purpose of the work described in this paper to determine by experiment the differences in floatability between silicates; to investigate the causes for such differences, and to discover a means of predetermining approximate floatability without the necessity of experimentation. Determining Floatability The relative floatability of 20 silicates so selected as to represent all of the more common silicate types1 was obtained by flotation tests enumerated in Table 1. The mineral to be floated was crushed dry on a steel plate, and screened repeatedly during crushing through an 80-mesh screen in order to produce a sand with all grains as close to 80 mesh as possible. The sand was placed in dilute (6N) hydrochloric acid until free of soluble foreign material, and then washed with tap water about ten times in order to remove both acid and fines. The resultant product, which averaged 82 per cent plus 200 mesh, was floated in 50-gram charges in a 50-gram Denver celluloid flotation machine with 0.008 gram of terpineol, and from 0.01 to 0.05 gram of oleic acid in a solution acidified with sulfuric acid. The degree of separation of one mineral from another was determined by counting under a nlicroscope the grains of each mineral, both in the concentrate and in the tailings, and comparing their relative abundance in each. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the equilibrium diagram of the lithium-magnesium pair as a first step in studying the possible usefulness of these alloys as ultra-light structural materials. Review of the Literature The behavior of lithium towards magnesium was first investigated by Masing and Tammann.(1)† In order to prevent oxidation the alloys were made in iron tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen; temperatures were measured with a glass-protected thermocouple. These investigators found that lithium and magnesium form two series of solid solutions separated by a miscibility gap between 85 and 95 per cent magnesium; that the alloys with 81 and 95 per cent magnesium showed a homogeneous structure under microscopic examination, while the alloy with 89 per cent magnesium contained two distinguishable crystallites; that the curve indicating the beginning of crystallization rises from the melting point of lithium to that of magnesium; and that no compounds of lithium and magnesium are formed. The equilibrium diagram was not plotted because no definite data were obtained for determining the solidus and the position of the miscibility gap in the solid state. The difficulties encountered in this investigation were: (1) that it was necessary to heat them as high as the melting point of magnesium in order to obtain homogeneous melts; at such temperatures the alloys attacked the glass protecting the thermocouple; and (2) that at temperatures above 400" C. the lithium united with the hydrogen to form lithium hydride, thus contaminating the alloys. THE 70-mile serpentine belt of eastern Quebec, producing 70 pct of the world&apos;s chrysotile, has 11 operating mines, two of which are underground, eight are open-pit, and one is both open-pit and underground. The combined operation, the Jeffrey mine, of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Ltd. is the largest producer in the group. Haulage All four of the separate operations falling under transportation at the Johns-Manville Jeffery Mine at Asbestos, P. Q., is handled by the company owned Asbestos and Danville Railway. A variety of equipment is operated over the 25 miles standard gage railway. Included in the scope of transportation are: 1-Hauling mill rock to the mill. 2-Hauling stripping and waste rock to the waste dump. 3-Hauling mill tailings to the tailings dump. 4-Hauling supplies from, and finished products to Danville. Main line tracks are permanent, but those within the pit and on the dumps have to be relocated constantly to follow the mining face and dump edges. Tracks within rock areas in the mine are laid on steel ties and can be moved by a bulldozer. Standard mechanical track shifters move tracks in dirt areas in the mine and on the dumps. Train-movements, both within the mine and over the out-lying tracks are controlled by a dispatcher located at the southwest rim of the pit. Steam locomotives haul all stripping, waste rock, and ore from the mine to the gathering yard at the northwest rim of the pit. Normally, two trains per operating shovel are used, with adjustment for optimum loading. In the event of shovel loading on the bottom level or in good stripping, service may be increased to three or four trains per shovel. From the gathering yard a 100 ton diesel-electric locomotive hauls the mill rock to the mill slips, a distance of about three miles. Electric or steam locomotives haul the waste rock and stripping to the waste dump located about two and one-half miles from the mine. Stripping cars are sprayed with a chloride solution and "gravelled" to prevent wet stripping from freezing in the cars during the cold months. During the course of an in~*estigation into the occurrence of ordered AB3 structures, the following new phases have been found —CrRh3 (AuCu3 type), CrCo3 (MgCd3 type), HfCo4 (Ths Mn23 type), and WPt, MoPh type). The composition of the TiPt3-x phase (TiNi, type) is close to Ti23Pl77. The alloy chenzistry of transition rnetal AB3 structures is rezliewed in the light of electron concentration correlations of hex-agonality recently obtained for quasi-binary alloys. The relatizte colurne contraction in the AB3 structures increases with increasing difference in volume of the conzponents. A family of ordered close-packed layered structures is formed by stacking identical layers of composition AB, in various sequences, such that the coordination is twelvefold throughout and there are no A-A contacts. Previous work&apos; on quasi-binary AB3 alloys has led to the conclusion that the stacking sequence of the AB, structures changes with increasing radius ratio RA/RB from a purely cubic, through different mixtures of hexagonal and cubic stacking to a purely hexagonal stacking. However. for binary AB3 alloys, a correlation between the type of the crystal structure and the position of the components in the various volumns of the periodic table has been noted.2-5 It has been noted6 that this correlation appears to hold even though the radius ratio RA/RB may vary over a considerable range with the location of the components in the three long periods. Another study7" of several quasi-binary systems led to the conclusion that an increase in hexagonality of the stacking is associated with increase in the electron concentration e/a. as defined by the average per atom of the total number of electrons outside the inert gas shells. In apparent conflict with this conclusion, it is known that seven binary alloy structures isotypic with TiNi3 which is 50 pct hexagonal occur at a higher electron concentration (e/n = 8.5) than that (e/a = 8.25) for the 100 pct hexagonal MgCd3 type structure present in seven binary AB3 alloys. Table 111. In the present work, an investigation into the occurrence of binary AB3 structures in transition metal alloys was made, and a survey of binary AB3 structures is presented. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were pure metals of 99.9 wt pct purity. The alloys were arc-melted under partial pressure of argon and annealed in sealed silica capsules lined with molybdenum foil under argon at- mosphere. The total weight loss upon melting and subsequent annealing was always less than 1 pct and hence the alloys will be referred to by their intended (unanalyzed) compositions. Wherever the constitution permitted. the alloys were given a homogenizing treatment at 1200°C (3 days) prior to annealing. Unless otherwise stated all alloys were annealed at 900°C for 1 week and water-quenched. Sometimes the final annealing treatment was carried out on powders to accelerate the attainment of equilibrium. X-ray powder patterns were taken using a Guinier-de Wolff focusing camera (CuK, radiation) or an asymmetrical focusing camera (Co or CrK, radiation). For lattice parameter determination. internal silicon standards were employed. The intensity calculations were made using a Fortran IV program written by Jeitschko and parthe.9 RESULTS Twenty AB3 and three AB4 alloys were investigated. Table I lists the crystallographic data on some of the intermediate phases encountered in the present work. Table II contains the X-ray data for HfCo, (Th,,Mn,, type). The positional parameter, x. was assumed to be 0.378. the value for Th6Mnn2310 The X-ray pattern of ZrCo, was very similar to that of HfCo, and the previous structure determination of ZrCo, by Kuzma el al." was confirmed. Ordering in the alloy CrCo could be ascertained by the presence of only one weak super lattice line (101). the others being too weak presumably owing to the small difference in the scattering powers of chromium and cobalt. This line was observed in the X-ray pattern of powder from the massive sample annealed at 830°C (7 days) after the powder had been reannealed at 600°C (24 hr). The diffraction pattern of the powder similarly reannealed at 830°C (24 hr) contained only the lines due to a mixture of hcp and fcc Co(Crj solid solutions. Therefore, it appears reasonable to assume that O2 and/or N2 contamination which would be less likely to occur during the 600°C anneal was not responsible for the observed weak reflection. Also. this reflection cannot be identified with any of the strong lines of the neighboring s phase which is present in the Co-Cr system at higher chromium contents. The composition corresponding to the TiNi3 structure observed by Raman et al.12 in the two-phase alloy Ti,zt,, has been established in the present work as being between There was satisfactory agreement for the low-angle lines (up to d = 1.997A) between the observed diffraction pattern of TiCua and that calculated assuming the ZrAu, structure. as recently proposed by Pfeifer-et a1.I3 However. some of the superlattice lines. e.g., at d = 1.937 and 1.919A. predicted by the ZrAu, structure were not actually observed eve? though neighboring lines. at d = 1.947 and 1.986A. of comparable calculated intensity were present.
