MORE than 70 igneous pipes and dikes are known to occur in Cambrian sediments throughout an approximately circular area of about 75 sq miles, in southwestern Ste. Genevieve County and southeastern St. Francois County, Mo., across the southern portion of the Farmington anticline, which is outlined in fig. 1. From evidence obtained from fossil fragments taken from some of the intrusives, and from the similarity in composition of the more basic intrusives to those of known age in surrounding states, these pipes and dikes are believed to be at least post-Devonian and probably Cretaceous in age. As first postulated by Rust[1], these intrusives are believed to represent explosion tubes, or diatremes, punched through great thicknesses of solid rock by gaseous pressure.

INTRODUCTION There are important reasons for a discussion of tungsten resources, reserves, and production in the Circum-Pacific area. First, the world's chief tungsten deposits, as well as most of the world's tungsten reserves and production, occur in this region. It is well known that the world's largest tungsten reserves are located in southeastern China and that for many years, the largest individual mine in the world was there. Although China still has the world's greatest tungsten production, the very high-grade scheelite mine of Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation in the Northwest Territories is the largest producer of tungsten today. There is certainly a great quantity of tungsten in Asia, but the strategic importance of this fact is now offset by the wide distribution of mines and production facilities throughout the world, especially in other parts of the Circum-Pacific area such as Australia, Canada, and the United States. In addition, much of the Circum-Pacific area is comprised of Mesozoic-Cenozoic orogenic belts. These global tectonic units are regarded as very favorable for additional tungsten deposits, particularly scheelite-bearing tactites, and consequently, prospecting and exploration will most likely be concentrated in the Circum-Pacific area. Second, tungsten must be regarded as one of the, most important metals of modern industry because of its very special properties. It has the highest melting point, the highest tensile strength at elevated temperatures, and the smallest compressibility of any metal. The metal also possesses a very high density, excellent corrosion resistance, good thermal and electrical conductivity, and a low coefficient of expansion. As a result, tungsten has found increasing importance in a wide range of industries. From the filament in an electric lamp, to cutting tools and drilling bits, to the exotic radiation shields that protect supersonic aircraft and spacecraft, tungsten plays an indispensable role in our daily lives. The primary objective of this paper is to present an overview of important facets of known and suspected tungsten in the Circum-Pacific area. Resources, reserves, current production, planned capacity expansions, and new operations, as well as an assessment of the probability for development of deposits in the Circum-Pacific area, are discussed. RESOURCES The average crustal abundance of tungsten has been estimated at 0.0015 kilograms per tonne. A comparison of the abundance of various metals in crustal rocks to that of tungsten is presented in Table 1, which shows that tungsten abundance is similar to that of its commonly associated metals, tin and molybdenum. AVERAGE CRUSTAL ABUNDANCE OF VARIOUS METALS (Grams per Tonne) [ ] With careful thought, it can be realized that tungsten ore deposits result from the concentration of the metal, through normal geologic processes, to levels substantially greater than its average crustal abundance. The minimum technologically and economically workable tungsten concentration, or cutoff grade, is a function of (1) deposit tonnage, (2) mining and milling methods, (3) production tonnage, (4) capital and operating costs, (5) tungsten market conditions, and (6) value of associated recoverable metals. The tungsten cutoff grade that is currently exploitable at a profit varies from 0.09% W03 to 1.55% W03, reflecting concentration factors from 470 to 8200, as shown in Table 2. Table 2. This report summarizes the information that was obtained by the Committee on Unit Operation in Eastern United States and in the foreign countries. Letters and questionnaires were sent to all of the Eastern members of the Petroleum Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and to those who are living outside of the United States, asking them to advise the Committee of any unit operations that are in effect in the various countries of the world and to furnish the names of men to whom inquiries should be directed for detailed information on the different projects. The response to the Committee's request is worthy of note. Practically all of the members who had knowledge of foreign operations replied to the questionnaire and not only furnished information that was of value to the Committee, but they evidenced a real interest in the subject of unit operations and assured the Committee of their willingness to assist in every way possible in order to make the study a success. The Committee wishes, at this time, to express its appreciation of the excellent cooperation that was received from the members of the A. I. M. E. to whom questionnaires were sent. Unfortunately, the limited time that has been given to this survey did not permit the collection of detailed data on the different unit operations that are now in effect. It required several weeks to get back replies from the members located in some of the foreign countries and as a result the men who were asked to furnish information on the various projects have not had sufficient time to submit the detailed data that were requested. The Committee has been assured, however, that information relating to a number of unit operations will be furnished in the near future. Part of the delay has been due to the fact that the purpose of the study was not understood and because the terms "unit" and "near-unit" operations were not clearly defined. Having worked some rather lorn--grade gravel during the past season at a small profit, I give the actual figures, in the hope that other mining engineers interested in this line of work may be thereby induced to do the same, in order that we may all get more data on this little-ventilated subject. The property here referred to is situated in one of the northern counties of California, where hydraulic mining is still permitted by the courts. The water-right belonging to the mine is a good one, furnishing water during about nine months, whenever there is an average rain-fall, and a fair proportion of the precipitation is in the form of snow. The ditch, about 11 miles in length, is cared for during the rainy months by two men, and during the rest of the year by one; and the water cost last season, delivered at the mine, 0.69 cent per miners' inch. The season commenced in November, 1899, and ended the last of July, 1900. During this time, 655,657 miners' inches (an inch equals 1728 cu. ft. in 24 hours) of water were used for piping, and for sweeping the bed-rock at the end of the season. From actual surveys, this amount of water washed down 1,251,399 cu. yds. of material, consisting of pay-gravel lying on the bed-rock, and varying in thickness from a few inches to 8 ft., and practically barren top-material, consisting of mountain slide, carrying considerable broken rock, clay, and soil. The banks varied in height from 50 to 130 ft., the average height being 63 ft. The grade of the sluices was 7 in. to 12 ft., the boxes being paved with block-riffles 12 in. deep. Long bed-rock cuts extended from the heads of the sluices to within a few feet of the banks, and were kept practically to grade as the work advanced. Although vanadium is an important constituent of almost every brand of high-speed steel manufactured today, little is known as to its role in this series of alloys. The now standard 18 per cent tungsten and 4 per cent chromium constituents were the result of developments and improvements before 1903. In that year, vanadium was added to the steel by Dr. J. A. Mathews. This proved to be an outstanding contribution, so that the standard high-speed steel of today is generally referred to as the 18-4-1 type—18 per cent W, 4 per cent Cr and 1 per cent V. Various modifications have been attempted since then, but with the exception of the introduction of cobalt, no striking improvements have occurred. Vanadium has been increased to 2 per cent in many of the common brands, and at least one brand contains 5 per cent V in addition to the usual tungsten and chromium. The carbon has been gradually increased so that it is not uncommon to find 0.80 per cent in the standard grade, although the carbon in the 5 per cent vanadium steel mentioned above is approximately 1 per cent, and even 1.2 per cent has been made experimentally. The role of vanadium has never been well understood, and although vanadium has been increased to 2.5 and even 5 per cent in certain high speed steels, it has not been generally established that the higher vanadium contents result in superior cutting properties. However, in all of the investigations, of which the writers are aware, the interrelation of the vanadium and carbon contents was not considered as a prime factor. The carbon content was held at 1.2 per cent or less—generally at the usual 0.65 to 0.75 per cent. Theoretical Aspects Although the role of vanadium is not understood, there are theoretical considerations which indicate definite reasons for the improved cutting effciency due to vanadium. Refinement of the secondary grain is one distinct possibility. The well-known action of vanadium in limiting grain size might well be expected to operate in high-speed steels, and even though its action were not evident in the parent austenite grain.

The various materials utilized in the construction of integrated circuits, and the resultant materials interfaces, are discussed with emphasis on a materials system that is compatible with all types of integrated circuits and minimizes the number of different interfaces. Problems with interfaces may originate in the silicon, on its surface, and between other materials within the integrated-circuit package independent of the silicon. ThE difference between integrated-circuit theory and practice may generally be spelled out in terms of the difficulties in fabricating a desired structure. There are, of course, problems in forming the requisite materials, of the necessary composition and geometry, where needed. A distinct class of problem, however, is associated with interfaces— generally between different materials, but occasionally between regions of the same material. We require that each interfacial system perform its proper electrical, mechanical, and thermal function, and do so in an unchanging manner with time under the most severe operating conditions. In a practical sense, we deal in nonideal systems, such that it is generally not possible to form an interface exactly the way it was intended, even if we allow for a knowledge of the practical limitations of the fabrication system. Another way of looking at this situation is to realize that, when we form a group of interfaces under apparently the same experimental conditions, there are often differences of important consequence between them. Very high-magnification pictures, such as are obtained by an electron microscope, reveal fine structure that often differs over the area of a given sample, as well as from sample to sample. Low-magnification pictures look better, but don't eliminate the problem. The trend towards integrated circuits, and away from circuits fabricated utilizing separate components, is very strong in many areas of electronics. A typical silicon monolithic integrated circuit, still in place in the wafer on which it was fabricated, is shown in Fig. 1. The increased reliability which is being experienced through the use of integrated circuits can, to a large extent, be credited to the reduced complexity of the interface system that is present in the electronic system. A glance at Fig. 1, however, with all of its epitaxial and diffused p-n junctions, and interconnect system, shows that interfaces have been far from eliminated. Fig. 2, depicting a schematic cross-sectional view of a (partial) typical integrated circuit, illustrates in detail the numerous interfaces that occur in this type of structure. Besides the individual circuit elements, there are interfaces for isolation, and, Fig. 3, even a crossover requires a series of interfaces. What has been accomplished, however, irrespective of whether or not the total number of interfaces in the circuit is increased or decreased, is that the variety of interfaces is very much reduced. This is because there are fewer materials involved. Since the expense incurred in an R & D program to improve reliability is pretty much directly proportional to the variety of interfaces involved, it is economically advisable to work with integrated circuits for highest reliability. That is not to say that circuits built using standard components could not be made as reliable as integrated circuits, but that the expense involved because of the more complex over-all interface system would be much greater. Although electronic performance utilizing integrated circuits with all silicon elements (i.e., transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors) is adequate for many applications, there are numerous instances where thin-film passive elements must

A FUNDAMENTAL investigation of the mecha-nism of the ordering reaction and of the accompanying changes in properties has been undertaken, since an extensive study of this process could well contribute to the knowledge of phase transitions in alloys. Cobalt-platinum alloys were chosen for the study since they exhibit interesting and unusual permanent magnet properties.1,2. In addition, the ordering reaction in cobalt-platinum alloys is a convenient one to study experimentally because of the high maximum ordering temperature, the large difference in the X-ray scattering power of cobalt and platinum atoms, and the relative ease with which the alloys can be plastically worked into wire and strip. In the early stages of this study, it became apparent that the published phase diagrams&apos;, &apos; of the cobalt-platinum system contained questionable features, in the region of 40 to 60 atomic pct Co, which were considered in another publication by the authors.4 That portion of the research reported elsewhere on the equilibrium states of cobalt-platinum alloys does not confirm the presence of a previously reported, high temperature disordered tetragonal phase and a low temperature body-centered cubic phase. On the other hand, the structure of the ordered phase is face-centered tetragonal with an atomic distribution analogous to that of CuAu.4 This lattice forms from the disordered face-centered cubic phase in such an orientation that the <100> directions are parallel to the <100> direc-tions of the disordered phase. At compositions other than the ideal 50 atomic pct the ordered phase can exist in equilibrium at high temperatures with the disordered phase. A Widmanstatten pattern of plate-like particles of the ordered phase parallel to (110) planes of the disordered matrix is observed when an initially disordered alloy is held at these temperatures. The temperature range of the two-phase region has been determined for three alloys by X-ray diffraction analyses, microscopic examination, and electrical resistivity measurements, and these results are incorporated with some of those of Gebhardt and Köster in the revised phase diagram of fig. 1. THE mines of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation are at Kimberly, in the Robinson mining district, White Pine County, Nevada. [ ] The blanket-like ore body is a disseminated copper deposit occurring in monzonite porphyry and, in general, is thoroughly fractured, altered, and soft. Contained in the porphyry ores of the extreme westerly end of the ore body are pendants of hard garnetized limestone. A younger monzonite porphyry underlies the ore-bearing porphyry, which in turn rests on limestone and shale. Block caving is the standard method of mining. Because of the undulating top and bottom contours of the ore body, the main haulage level was selected and driven at an elevation calculated to be the most economic depth below the major tonnage sections of ore. Fig. I shows a general section of the Emma Nevada ore body taken through its long axis, which lies roughly in an east-west direction. Mine openings in either type of porphyry require heavy timbering and constant maintenance and repair, particularly in horizons at or near the ore body contact. Where the ore lies close to the haulage level, slusher hoists and scrapers are used to transport horizontally the ore to the main haulage drift (Fig. 2). For the extraction of high-lying ores, a system of branch raises is used; and the ore is mined by gravity. Slushing methods are used also on the high-lying ore-body fringes. Slusher drifts are often driven from the fringe branch raises that have already served their purpose, in order to minimize the cost of the preparatory work in mining the thinner portions of the ore body (Figs. 3 and 4). When a block of ore is developed and undercut, it is economical to mine it as rapidly as the ore will cave efficiently; and this procedure often presents safety problems because of men with equipment working in a relatively congested area. The single-track main haulage drift is about 1 ½ miles long, and lateral haulage drifts are driven under the ore body at intervals determined by the height of the ore body above the haulage level. IN a study of the blast-furnace process, the Bureau of Mines has made many experiments for the purpose of determining the exact nature of the combustion of coke in the neighborhood of the tuyeres. Two papers1 presented at a meeting of this Institute discussed somewhat the practical aspects of coke combustibility in its relation to the operation of the blast furnace. In a later paper,2 Sherman and Kinney discussed the possible effect of variations in the combustibility of cokes on the furnace operation, and find that the "reoxidation theory" of Koppers and the "heat concentration theory" of Brassert3 are insufficient to explain the variation in the conduct of different cokes that has been observed by furnace operators. In their report to the D-5 Committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, with which the Bureau of Mines has been cooperating, Perrott and Fieldner4 seem to agree with Sherman and Kinney that, for practical purposes, the nature of the combustion of coke at the tuyeres of any furnace is constant and is affected neither by the physical properties of the coke nor by the nature of the furnace operation. They omit as unimportant any tests on the combustibility of coke from their proposed methods for standard tests on coke. Gach-Saran.—The most important development of 1937 has been the successful completion of initial exploratory wells in the Gach Saran (formerly known as Gach-i-Qaraghuli) field, about 125 miles southeast of Haft Kel. Two of these wells are rated at 33,000 bbl. per day at flowing pressures exceeding 800 lb. Drilling is proceeding with the object of delimiting the structure. Exploratory drilling is also being undertaken in several areas within the company&apos;s concession. In the producing fields the policy of controlled production has been maintained as in the past, and drilling has been limited to that required for maintenance of production and general control of the fields. Acid treatment to increase production when desired has continued to be successful in most cases. The policy of returning, as and when necessary, surplus products to the reservoir has been maintained. Haft Ke1.—Drilling to explore deeper formations has been undertaken, but has not progressed far enough for conclusive results to be drawn. Gasoline retention in the crude by means of multistage pressure stabilization has been continued as in past years. Separation pressures are as follows: well-head separators, 500 lb.; central battery, 190, 85, 40, 20 and 10 lb. per sq. in., respectively. The stabilized crude is delivered to pipe line at atmospheric pressure, or ex the 10-lb. stage, in accordance with refinery requirements.

The Pechelbronn (Alsace) field is the only important French producing field. During 1934, development was carried on as in previous years. The total output of this field reached 553,575 bbl. in 1934, showing a slight decrease from the 1933 figures. Of the total, 315,000 bbl. (56 per cent) was extracted by drilling, while 238,875 bbl. (46 per cent) was obtained by means of shafts and galleries. Exploration of deep Jurassic and Triassic horizons was still in progress at the end of 1934. A deep well reached the Upper Triassic at a depth of 34 m. (2736 ft.). (Information kindly supplied by M. S. Mena, Directeur Technique.) As mentioned before, the small Gabian field (Herault) is gradually being exhausted. No drilling operations were undertaken in 1934, the small production being restricted to the pumping of old wells. Two exploration wells, noted as "drilling" at the end of 1933, were completed in 1934; viz., Lavelanet (Ariége) at 3785 ft. and Santenay (Niévre) at 2578 feet. French Possessions Algeria.—No drilling at Tliouanet. Out of a total of 100 wells drilled in the area, only 8 are still producing. No exploration work is reported during 1934 in Algeria. Tunisia.—Two wells completed; one well drilling at the end of 1934. A total of 11 wells is reported to have been drilled before the beginning of 1935; out of these, 8 were completed before the present program was begun. Morocco.—Exploration work progressed actively last year. The outstanding event was the coming in of Ts. 26 well at 1243 ft. This well took fire, therefore great difficulties were encountered in the accurate measurement of initial production; the figure of 1500 bbl. of oil given here is a near estimate. Oil flowed accompanied by a great amount of water. The apparent decrease of drilling operations in 1934 is explained by the increase in field activities after the results of Ts. 26 were known;

Lack of reliable detailed production figures for earlier years, together with the loose nomenclature in reference to producing horizons and the application of the term "field" without any definite meaning or restriction, has made it impossible to gather statistical data suitable for the Institute&apos;s form. In common with all other producing areas in the United States, Ohio has felt severely the economic ills of the entire industry during the past year. With overproduction, not only of crude but also of refined products, going on throughout the country, the price structure as a direct consequence has weakened on Ohio oils. Valuable crude is being sold at a big loss today because producers arc willing to, and do, sell more than the market can absorb. The axe hangs heavy over the heads of Ohio producers, and will until something constructive is done to keep supply in proportion to demand. This not only applies to Ohio but to the entire industry. Production of Pennsylvania grade in Ohio was under 50 per cent proration, which has been in effect since Oct. 1, 1937. Three price cuts since February have lowered the posted price from $1.70 to $1.18, a 30 per cent reduction; other grades were less drastically reduced. Pipeline storage facilities were limited; many producers were faced with the problem of providing their own storage or the risk of ruining their wells. If they wanted to pull and abandon wells, there was no market for junk equipment. Many employees have been cut to half time and in a number of instances their services entirely dispensed with. Summary of Production and Drilling Both oil and gas production in the state during 1938 showed a definite decline over the previous year. (A table showing production by years from 1876 through 1937 was published in Vol. 127 of the Transactions.) The total production of crude oil in the state for 1938 was 3,357,914 bbl., as compared with 3,654,000 bbl. in 1937, a decrease of 7.1 per cent. At

The waters of many oil fields have been regarded as buried sea water which has been retained in the sediments since the time of their deposition. The preservation of connate water through geological time has seemed improbable to only a few geologists, but there is room for doubt that buried sea water could remain in the strata during their periods of deformation and during the many subsequent epochs of the circulation of meteoric ground-water. Some have even suggested that the calcium chloride water in the deep mines of the Lake Superior region is ancient sea water buried in the Algonkian lavas, but it is hard to understand how such water could be derived from the highly sodic and sulphatic water of the sea. It would seem more plausible to connect the calcium chloride with the highly calcic magmas of the greenstones in which it is found. Chemical analyses of waters associated with oil differ widely from the composition of sea water, requiring extensive alteration of the latter, if the former is truly its derivative. The first notable difference is the general absence of sulphates from oil-field waters, but this has been explained satisfactorily through reduction by hydrocarbons and organic matter. Oil reduces sulphates with the production of hydrogen sulphide (or sulphur), water, and carbonates (or carbon dioxide). The second striking difference is in the high ratio of chlorine to sodium. An examination of the analyses of chloride waters from oil fields shows that they contain a large relative excess of chlorine over that in sea .water. -Moreover, there is difficulty in finding chemical reactions that are probable in nature, by which sea water could be converted into anything like the chloride waters of oil fields. In the latter a large part of the chlorine occurs as calcium and magnesium chloride. This condition might be produced by the removal of sodium carbonate, which, however, cannot be precipitated in the presence of much calcium or magnesium.

IN applied mechanics and in metallurgy the transition from elastic to inelastic action is a matter of considerable interest and importance. Often the first inelastic deformation is apparently quite homogeneous; that is, uniformly distributed throughout the specimen. Sometimes this deformation is heterogeneous; that is, localized; inelastic deformation proceeds to some definite amount in restricted regions before adjacent regions of the specimen are inclastically deformed. In such cases the deformation does not become homogeneous until the whole specimen has been deformed the amount corresponding to that for each localized deformation. If the test is stopped before uniform extension sets in, the heterogeneous character of the deformation is apparent on the surface of the specimen through characteristic markings, which have been called "Lüders"&apos; lines, "Hartmann&apos;s" lines, the "Piobert effect," or simply "flow figures." These markings are the source of considerable trouble in fabricating operations, particularly in the deep drawing of steel sheet. In many cases where the transition is of this nature, the stress developed at the upper limit of the elastic range is greater than the stress during the period of heterogeneous deformation, giving rise to the familiar "drop of the beam" effect in testing. The amount of the yield-point elongation, as well as the value of the stress at the lower yield point (the value to which the stress drops when yielding begins), are functions of the tempera-ture and the testing speed. Lower temperatures and faster rates of testing increase both the yield-point elongation and the yield-point stress. These matters have been ably discussed in a recent paper by Winlock and Leiter1 though, as brought out by the discussion of that paper, the phenomena are but little understood. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify the problem through the application of a simple principle, and to show that, through the application of this principle, a number of phenomena in the plastic deformation of metals become more read-ily understood.

Lack of reliable detailed production figures for earlier years, together with the loose nomenclature in reference to producing horizons and the application of the term "field" without any definite meaning or restriction, has made it impossible to gather statistical data suitable for the Institute&apos;s form. In common with all other producing areas in the United States, Ohio has felt severely the economic ills of the entire industry during the past year. With overproduction, not only of crude but also of refined products, going on throughout the country, the price structure as a direct consequence has weakened on Ohio oils. Valuable crude is being sold at a big loss today because producers arc willing to, and do, sell more than the market can absorb. The axe hangs heavy over the heads of Ohio producers, and will until something constructive is done to keep supply in proportion to demand. This not only applies to Ohio but to the entire industry. Production of Pennsylvania grade in Ohio was under 50 per cent proration, which has been in effect since Oct. 1, 1937. Three price cuts since February have lowered the posted price from $1.70 to $1.18, a 30 per cent reduction; other grades were less drastically reduced. Pipeline storage facilities were limited; many producers were faced with the problem of providing their own storage or the risk of ruining their wells. If they wanted to pull and abandon wells, there was no market for junk equipment. Many employees have been cut to half time and in a number of instances their services entirely dispensed with. Summary of Production and Drilling Both oil and gas production in the state during 1938 showed a definite decline over the previous year. (A table showing production by years from 1876 through 1937 was published in Vol. 127 of the Transactions.) The total production of crude oil in the state for 1938 was 3,357,914 bbl., as compared with 3,654,000 bbl. in 1937, a decrease of 7.1 per cent. At

This paper covers a brief discussion of pumping 38° to 41° gravity oil from Wilcox sand wells ranging in depths from 4000 to 4900 ft. in the Seminole field, Oklahoma. As recently as a year ago it was the general belief among Seminole operators that most wells in that district could not be successfully or economically pumped. Also the idea was prevalent at that time that the crookedness of the rotary holes would cause a large amount of mechanical trouble and the use of the air-gas lift would leave the wells depleted with sand conditions and fluid levels unfavorable for pumping. At that time it was predicted that wells would be abandoned when the economic flowing and swabbing period was reached. Contrary to these beliefs it has been demonstrated that wells can be profitably pumped to limits as low as 10 bbl. of oil per day where conditions are favorable. The Serllinole field, unusual in its rapid development, has served as an experimental laboratory for many oil field pumping devices with which this paper will not concern itself. Discussion will be confined to equipment and methods in general use throughout the field. The outstanding features of equipment and pumping operations covered in this paper may be summarized as follows: 1. Pumping equipment from the standpoint of prime movers, energy cost, power transmission equipment, derricks, counterbalances, beam hangers, tubing, sucker rods, pumps, etc. 2. Pumping problems peculiar to the Seminole field, including the proper time at which to change from air-gas lift flowing to pumping. Pumping Equipment There have been no basic changes in pumping equipment in the past 20 years with the exception of some refinements in design brought about by the demand for equipment suitable for pumping deep wells. LouisiaNa ranks fifth among the oil-producing states. In 1941 the state-wide production was slightly in excess of 118,000,000 bbl. of crude oil and conden-sate—an increase of 15,000,000 bbl. over the total production for the year 1940. During 1941, south Louisiana produced approximately 90,900,000 bbl. of oil, while north Louisiana produced approximately 27,000,000. South Louisiana, therefore, produced about 3¼ times more oil than north Louisiana. During the past year, 574,800,000 M cu. ft. of natural and casinghead gas were produced in Louisiana; thus 1941 gas production exceeded the 1940 production by 104,900,000 M cu. feet. Completion records for the year 1941 show that 1512 wells were completed in or adjoining producing fields. These wells, which were drilled to extend known producing areas or were located within producing areas, are not considered as wildcat wells. Of the total number of field wells drilled, 1152 wells found production; the remaining 360 were junked or dry and abandoned. This means that 76 per cent of the wells drilled were successful. Considering the precarious nature of oil-field development, this percentage of new producing wells is exceedingly satisfactory. Of the total number of field welis com-pleted as producers, approximately 86 wells found new and distinct producing sands. During the past year, 30 new fields were found. Four parishes—namely, Caldwell, Catahoula, Orleans, and Natchitoches— entered the ranks of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state during that period. This brings the total number of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state up to 48. Thus, 75 per cent of the parishes in Louisiana now contain one or more oil and/or gas fields. Although sufficient data are not available to list the addition reserves found in Louisiana during 1941, it is felt that such reserves undoubtedly exceed twice the total production for that year, or at least 200 million barrels. In reserves, therefore, Louisiana ranks third among the various oil-producing states. South Louisiana Although 16 new fields were found in south Louisiana, the outstanding developments in that part of the state were not limited to new discoveries. In fact, most of the increase in reserve in that area has been most consistently accumulated through extensions of known producing sands and through the finding of new sands in already productive fields, especially at depths below the presently producing sands. Since data concerning most of the new extensions and sands are too extensive for discussion here, the more important developments arc briefly outlined below: Abbeville, Vermilion Parish.—Production extended ½ mile to the west. Anse La Butte, St. Martin Parish.—New oil sand discovered at 9400 ft., thus extending production to east flank. West flank defined by dry holes.
