The term "longwall mining" is best known to coal men, although modifications of the method are continually being used in other fields. Longwall mining is of interest today because it makes for greater inechanization and better supervision at the working face, and therefore lower production costs and increased safety. It is an approach to the factory system of production, the high efficiency of which as compared to that in mines is well known. There is available an accumulation of experience regarding this work but coordination of experience is lacking and this series of experiments was undertaken to help serve this purpose. Model experiments were used for reasons of safety, cost and time, and because it has been previously shown1,2,3 that a scalar inodel built of the same material as the prototype will behave in a manner similar to that of the prototype, with time effects the same, if the effective weight of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear dimenbions are decreased. This is accomplished by substituting a centrifugal for the gravitational field; i.e., placing the model in a centrifuge and controlling the strength of the centrifugal field by varying the rate of rotation. Many factors affect the behavior of the geologic material overlying a bed, therefore results and conclusions contained in this paper apply only to the conditions presented herein. The recent activity of numerous foreign mining companies in the once flourishing tin fields in Cornwall, England has resulted in renewed interest in the evaluation of hypothermal tin deposits. These deposits are mainly narrow tabular bodies and are usually steeply dipping. They exhibit thermal zoning the mineralization changing from lead/zinc through copper to tin with depth. The tin zone virtually never exceeds 1,000' in depth and the ore shoots within this zone tend to be erratic and localized. The grade which is presently considered to be economic is about 0.7% Sn. , this means a concentration of about l% cassiterite (the only economic mineral) which, being twice as heavy as the gange, represents only. 5% of the lode volumetrically. Within the lode, only one third may reach this economic grade and values within the shoots can range from 100% cassiterite to zero over a few inches. The enormity of the problem of evaluating such a deposit has not been fully appreciated by the companies involved whose experience has, for the main part, been in larger and more predictable ore bodies. This paper attempts to put these problems into perspective and out- lines the useful applicatations of statistical and computer techniques. It also stresses the need for enlightened interpretation of data by men familiar with the problem and that even in this day and age, educated, intuitive deduction should not yet be relegated to the limbo of alchemy and witchcraft.

IN his recent article, Stanley C. Herold described some of the principles involved in oil-field rejuvenation. The purpose of this paper is to present certain facts, based upon observations of systematic water flooding of oil sands in the Bradford and Allegany fields of northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York, which, it is believed, will partially substantiate Mr. Herold's opinions. The writer gratefully acknowledges his obligation to the Forest Oil Corpn., the Kendall Refining Co., the Petroleum Reclamation Co., W. J. Healey, of Bradford, Pa., and the Producers Oil Corpn., of Olean, N. Y., for information included in this article; and he is especially indebted to Jerry B. Newby, of the Petroleum Reclamation Co., for helpful suggestions and criticism in the preparation of the paper. It is obvious that, in the calculation of mathematical formulas for the prediction of oil recovery, uniform conditions must be assumed; otherwise, the applicability of the results of such work will be, by necessity, restricted to the area or individual property for which they were designed. Geologic and physical conditions are so variable throughout the fields where water flooding is practiced that it is difficult to devise methods that can be universally applicable. However, it is believed that there are certain fundamental principles which, when applied with specific modifications designed to meet the conditions existing in local areas or individual properties, may yield considerably greater recoveries of oil.

A GENERAL decline in copper production for most American producers occurred during the past year as a result of shortage in available labor. Few noteworthy technical developments have been reported; undoubtedly, many changes and improvements have been made but have not been reported because of lack of time. During the war years through 1944 the pressure for sustained high production has been of prime importance and during 1945, with slackening of production, many operators were faced with the problem of catching up on repairs and maintenance of plants, with inadequate labor supply. In hydrometallurgy there were some important developments that undoubtedly will be reported during 1946. Several operators in the Southwest have instituted experimental leaching programs to exploit low-grade oxidized and mixed ore bodies. The Bureau of Mines is conducting pilot-plant experimental work to determine the possibility of producing a satisfactory sponge iron at an attractive cost from deposits of iron ore and coal in Arizona. Described in this paper are oceanographic data which should be considered by an offshore design engineer and methods for developing a design wave height from the oceanographic data. The selection of a design wave is predicated on contemplated waves which might affect the site throughout the life of the structure. Selection of a design wave height may be based on (1) arbitrarily established recurrence Frequencies of hurricanes affecting the structure (predicted wave heights are associated with the expected variations of forces resulting from these waves) and (2) a risk-type evaluation wherein all possible storms affecting the area are considered (anticipated wave heights are associated with both investment plus risk costs and expected variations of forces). It is shown how the following oceanographic predictions are integrated into design considerations: (1) a classification of storm intensity which considers all recorded storms which affected the design area, (2) the recurrence interval of storms of a given- intensity (this interval is dependent on the extent of the geographical area considered in the design problem) and (3) a forecast of all wave heights which might affect the area (geometry of a structure often necessitates consideration of waves from a multiplicity of directions). The authors believe that the described techniques can result in selecting an adequate and reasonable design wave. INTRODUCTION Since the inception of offshore operations in the Gulf of Mexico, engineers engaged in designing suuctural facilities have been plagued with the problem of selecting an adequate and reasonable design wave. In the development of any offshore structure it is mandatory that the engineer evaluate the ability of the structure to withstand the ocean waves to which it will be subjected. Selecting such design waves quite naturally necessitates a coalition of the oceanographer and the design engineer. The oceanographer must provide a detailed knowledge of scientific principles which govern the behavior of waters in the Gulf of Mexico. He should also have an adequate knowledge of the manner in which design waves are utilized by the engineer. Although the design engineer's primary responsibility is applying the oceanographer's specialized knowledge in the creation of real structures, it is important that he possess some knowledge of related oceanographic principles to reasonably evaluate and apply the recommendations of the oceanographer. In the Gulf of Mexico it is the hurricane wind waves which generally govern the design of an offshore facility. The oceanographer must therefore develop techniques for predicting the heights, periods and frequency of all hurricane waves which might affect a particular structure. From this mass of oceanographic data, the design engineer must select the design waves which will apply to his particular design. PAST STUDIES ON FREQUENCY AND AMPLITUDE OF HURRICANE WIND WAVES Past oceanographic studies on the frequency of hurricane wave heights in the Gulf of Mexico have been devoted largely to predicting the recurrence interval of hurricanes which will generate maximum significant waves of given heights. The maximum significant wave height is the average height of the highest one third of the waves in that portion of the storm producing maximum wave heights. Since these waves occur over a relatively small portion of the storm (Fig. 1) and since the paths of hurricanes vary considerably (Fig. 2), the recurrence frequency of such heights is largely a function of the extent of the geographical area considered. In establishing the frequency of maximum significant waves for the entire American Gulf coast, the major fully developed hurricanes which affected the coastline from BrOwnsville, Tex., to Key West, Fla., were considered (Fig. 2). This paper presents the results of model studies made to demonstrate the validity of applying the "basic" waterflooding scaling relationships of Rapoport1 to water-wet reservoirs composed of communicating strata of different permeability. Results demonstrate that these relationships can be validly applied, and also show the combined effect of variables on recovery. This demonstration was needed to confirm that the sizable effects of communicating strata on waterflood behavior, observed in model studies, were actually representative of field behavior. INTRODUCTION Rapoport1 Collins2 and others have presented scaling laws for modeling water-oil displacements. The validity of these laws has been experimentally demonstrated for homogeneous systems only. Recently, however, several investigators have presented the results of multilayer model studies made to determine the effects of viscous, capillary and gravitational forces on oil recovery in systems composed of communicating layers of different permeability. Dyes and Braun,3 using miscible displacements to simulate water flooding, showed that vertical communication adversely affects recovery at unfavorable viscosity ratios in the absence of capillarity. Ogandzhanyants and Egorova, 4 Gaucher and Lindley,5 and Richardson and Perkins6 modeled water-oil displacements in layered systems using immiscible fluids with capillary forces present. These investigators found more efficient behavior than in the miscible system of Dyes and Braun. However, since the scaling laws had not been verified for heterogeneous systems prior to or during these tests, it was necessary to assume that the results were representative of field behavior. This report presents the results of model studies made at Jersey Production Research Co. to find out if the waterflooding scaling relationships are valid when applied to water-oil displacements in heterogeneous reservoirs with vertical communication. Data obtained in the study show the combined effects of viscous, capillary and gravitational forces on oil-recovery behavior. The studies were performed in strongly water-wet systems where strong imbibition forces were present. For systems of different wettability, the effects of capillary imbibition would be somewhat different than those presented. APPROACH The scaling laws studied were those developed by Rapoport1 and designated by him as "basic" scaling laws. These relationships require that the model be scaled to the geometry of the prototype, and that the model and prototype be operated at the same viscosity ratio and have identical relative permeability curves, contact angles and boundary conditions. It is also necessary that the groups** be identical in the two systems, although any of the parameters making up the groups may be different. Finally, the capillary pressure of one system must be directly proportional to that of the second. Studies were conducted in two four-layer models, representing quadrants of five-spots, which were geometrically similar and which had the same glass-bead packing. The fluids used assured the same wettability in both models. Thus, the contact angles and relative permeabilities of comparative sand layers in the two models were identical and the capillary pressures were directly proportional. However, one model had a characteristic length three times that of the other. To make the scaling groups equal and to check the scaling laws, it was necessary to adjust the rate, water-viscosity level, interfacial tension and water-oil density difference to compensate for the difference in model sizes.

RECENT interest in germanium centers around its use as a semi-conductor of electricity in electronic devices. It is generally believed that germanium transistors, diodes, triodes, photocells, and rectifiers will largely replace the present-day vacuum tubes. The germanium electronic devices are much smaller, lighter, and more resistant to shock, and they require only a small fraction of current required for conventional devices. Hence only a small amount of heat is given off by the equipment. This development will require many times the quantity of germanium now being produced, which in 1948 was approximately 1000 lb' and was obtained almost entirely from zinc ores in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. No one knows with certainty what the demand will be for ger-manium by 1956. It may be 40,000 lb.1 Known concentrations in zinc ores are not sufficient to

The changes of line position and integral line breadth in the X-ray diffraction pattern of a polycvys-talline Cu-30Zn tensile test piece, incrementally loaded (and unloaded) up to fracture, have been an-alyzed in detail. The stacking-fault probahility, cv, increased linearly with increasing strain, E, wheveas the effective domain size, De(hkl), decreased with decreasing E-1 Over the greater part of the stress-strain curve the rate of work hardening was essentially constant (about 86 kg per sq mwz), and could be correlated with the slope of stage II of the single-crystal stress-strain curve. Consequently the theories of work hal-dening (particularly those parts relating to stage 11) as developed by Mott and Hivsch and others could be applied to the observations made on the polycrystalline brass. A relationship of the form Aa = Aao - MhklEhkl between the change, Aa, in the extrapolated lattice pararneter and the rvns strain, Ehkl, was derived and found to fit the results acceptably well. From this and other relationships developed in the papev it was estimated that the equilibrium stacking-fault energy of Cu-30Zn was between 8.4 and 12.5 ergs per sq cm, in fuirly close agreement with the (corvected) value obtained by Howie and Swann (1961)43 using transmission electron microscopy. The theory of work hardening in the jorm developed and recently presented by Hirsch (1964)3 successfully described all the pvesent observations. In order to test certain aspects of the theories of work hardening, as developed by Mott,1 Hirsch,2,3 Seeger et el,4-7 and others (for review see Nabarro, Basinski, and Holt8), several recent investigations have been concerned with relating the dislocation density, p, with the shear stress, 7 (and strain, y), applied to the specimen. The results of these investigations have shown that the square root of the dislocation density appears to be linearly related to the applied shear (or flow) stress for fcc as well as bcc metals and alloys. Furthermore, the relationship appeared to apply not only to the deformation of poly-crystalline specimens, but also to stages I and I1 of the deformation of single crystals. An expression of the form has thus come into wide use. Here b is the Burgers vector for a total dislocation, G is the shear modulus, and 70 and q are constants. A review9 of available values of q shows it to have values (at room temperature) in general between 0.3 and 0.6. Forms of Eq. [1] can be deduced from, or predicted by, the current theories, and the various constants adjusted so that they are compatible with the experimentally found value of q . No unique relationship has yet been found between the dislocation density and the applied shear strain. There are several serious objections to the use of Eq. 11]. In the first place, it relates the shear stress to the density of the dislocations without regard to their arrangement, type, or distribution; the significance of the relation may therefore be justly questioned.5 In the second place, the values of the experimental quantities usually substituted into Eq. [11 are those of the applied shear stress and the total dislocation density measured after unloaditzg. The dislocation density value that should in fact be used is that for the mobile dislocations present in the specimen when under the applied load.* Finally, in cases where the values used for p, the dislocation density, are those obtained by electron microscopy, p is subject to considerable error,' both systematic and random. The corrections to be applied are still controversial. Dislocation densities can also be measured by etch-pit and other techniques,'' each having their specific limitations. An objective of the present investigation has been to obtain information about the dislocation configyration and distribution by analyzing the changes in the position and shape of X-ray diffraction profiles as a function of deformation. The X-ray techniques employed, also open to criticism, have certain advantages, however. Thus, although the X-rays diffract only from the surface layers to an effective depth of about 20 p, the measurements can be made while the specimen is under load. The value of the dislocation density obtained by the X-ray method is also subject to errors, which are different from those of the electron microscope. Though a considerably larger volume of material is sampled by the X-rays, thereby reducing some of the statistical errors inherent in the electron microscope data, the information obtained is less detailed and is dependent on the method of analysis used to obtain a value for the dislocation density. Nevertheless, important observations can be made because the aforementioned advantages outweigh some of the limitations. In the present paper the X-ray method is briefly described and applied to a brass specimens deformed in tension. The results are then discussed in terms of some of the current concepts of work hardening. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Details have already been extensively published elsewhere11-14 and therefore will only be dealt with briefly here. 1.1) Materials and Specimen Preparation. Production of oil within the state of Pennsylvania in 1940 was slightly more than the 1939 total, and this increase was due entirely to the new flush Music Mountain field south and west of the main Bradford pool. The influence and magnitude of Music Mountain production will be separately described, inasmuch as it is an important producing unit within the state. Production Bradford Field The production listed herein for Bradford field includes only the part of the field that is within the state of Pennsylvania. Approximately 4000 bbl. per day, or 10 per cent of the total Production of Bradford field comes from Cattaraugus County, New York, and should properly be attributed to production obtained within the New York state area, although locally and economically the Bradford field, situated both in New York State and Pennsylvania, is included as a single statistical unit. The 1940 average production in the Bradford field was 34,831 bbl. per day, as compared with a daily average in 1939 of 35,340 bbl., or a decrease from 1939 of 509 bbl. per day. The decrease in production from the Pennsylvania portion of the Bradford field would have been more pronounced if a portion of the crude from the Music Mountain field were not included with the statistics for Bradford field. The decline can be attributed largely to the fact that more properties of lower average recovery were being drilled in 1939 and 1940 than in previous years, and apparently a subnormal amount of drilling occurred in 1938 and 1939, when about 2100 wells were drilled each year. The full effect of the 1940 drilling is not felt immediately and undoubtedly will affect the producing period of 1941. It appears probable that the water-flood area in the Bradford field has reached a definite peak unless some unusual economic condition should cause abnormal prices and an excessive rate of development such as occurred in 1936 and 1937. Virtually all of the production in the Bradford field was obtained by water-flooding methods, as natural or stripper wells are uneconomical and air and gas repressuring have not proved so efficient as water-flooding as a secondary recovery method. Central and Southern Pennsylvania Central and southern Pennsylvania produced a total of 4,604,763 bbl. of oil during the calendar year of 1940; that is, an increase over the 1939 total of 166,728 bbl. The daily average production was 12,581 bbl., or an increase over 1939 of 422 bbl. per day. Table I includes the total oil production for the state of Pennsylvania for the years 1937 to 1940, inclusive, and the daily average for each of these years. BECAUSE of the many conflicting opinions regarding the functioning of the ball load and the characteristics of ball wear in ball-mill grinding, the following resume of reports covering recent tests conducted at the Hayden plant of the Kennecott Copper Corporation is submitted with the view of pointing out certain salient features that should throw additional light on the subject. MILLS USED Cylindrical drum mills with trunnion feed and discharge were used. The discharge trunnion was I3 1/2 in. in diameter. Dimensions inside the lining were 6 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 9 ft. 6 in. long. The mills were Britannia-lined and nine lifter bars projected 2 in. from the lining. The mill speed was 16 2/3 r.p.m. Feed to the mill was 9 per cent on 10-mesh, 85 per cent on 100-mesh, 77 per cent solids. New balls measured 2 in. in diameter and the approximate weight of the ball load was 40,000 pounds. INITIAL TEST During a test that was being conducted to determine the relative economic value of standard cast balls vs. forged steel balls in the local grinding operation, certain observations were made in regard to the functioning of the various ball sizes and the characteristics of ball wear, which warranted a supplementary test for the purpose of confirming such observations. For the initial test, the necessity for developing a graduated load of the new forged balls before the test could be started was realized, but the time required to obtain a graduated load and the functioning of the various ball sizes was not clear. No advantage could be seen for starting out with a full load of forged balls, as this initial load, at the least, would have to be completely ground out and replaced by daily additions of balls before the graduation could be complete and a normal static condition of ball sizes reached. For a considerable period prior to exhaustion of this initial charge there would be an unusual quantity of worn balls of a certain size, which would not be typical of a normal charge and could influence the characteristics and functioning of the entire load. Therefore, it was decided to start by daily addition of the forged balls to a mill that contained a normal operating load of cast balls. After 88 days of operation the mill was shut down for inspection. By that time the load consisted of a mass of forged balls functioning around a large core of the residual material of the former cast-ball load. This core of cast slugs, locally referred to as "the kidney," was well defined from the forged-ball load.

Application Of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. The interval studied had been cored and a large number of samples were analyzed in the core laboratory in order to compare the values of permeability and saturation with the measured values of formation resistivity. Results of this analysis indicate: (I) the depth to which mud filtrate enters a sand body, (2) a correlation between permeability and sand resistivity for shallow penetration depths, and (3) that the water saturation for an oil sand can be determined from the measured sand resistivity after making suitable corrections for sand thickness. The procedure in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. The accuracy of the theoretical curve is now being tested in the laboratory Introduction In an effort to place the analysis of electric logs on a quantitative basis, there is need for a better understanding of the many factors that influence an electric-log curve. These factors may be large differences in sand thickness, permeability of the sand, salinity of the interstitial water, mud resistivity, formation temperature, and other sources. A number of examples were presented by Archie,' which treat the effect of sand thickness on measured resistivity. He compared the true resistivity of a sand with the observed resistivity for sands 8 it., 16 ft., and 24 ft. thick, and found the observed resistivity of the 8-ft. sand to be approximately

It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. Results of this analysis indicate: (I) the depth to which mud filtrate enters a sand body, (2) a correlation between permeability and sand resistivity for shallow penetration depths, and (3) that the water saturation for an oil sand can be determined from the measured sand resistivity after making suitable corrections for sand thickness. The procedure in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. The accuracy of the theoretical curve is now being tested in the laboratory Introduction In an effort to place the analysis of electric logs on a quantitative basis, there is need for a better understanding of the many factors that influence an electric-log curve. These factors may be large differences in sand thickness, permeability of the sand, salinity of the interstitial water, mud resistivity, formation temperature, and other sources. A number of examples were presented by Archie,' which treat the effect of sand thickness on measured resistivity. INTRODUCTION Purpose of Wall System There were 2379.88 m (meters) of tied back wall along Interstate 77 in the Capitol Complex area in Charleston, West Virginia. The main purposes of this wall system was for aesthetics, reduction of excavation, saving the forested slopes, and control of sloughage of the back slopes onto the Interstate. Failure At 1 PM on Thanksgiving Day, 1982, 3 wall panels fell from the insitu position onto the interstate in a matter of seconds. See Fig. 1. The total length of wall that fell was 29.25m. The height of the three panels varied from 10.06m to 10.36~1 and each individual panel had a length along the highway of 9.75m. These were abutting panels that were approximately in the middle of a section of wall 165.81m long. The panels separated from the remainder of the wall at 2 expansion joints that occur at the ends of every 3rd panel. The reinforced portland cement concrete panels were designed on a 76.2mm (millimeter) batter. See Fig. 2 for Wall Dimensions. The footer for these panels was lm wide, was keyed into sandstone bedrock 0.30m and was approximately 1.52m below the portland cement concrete pavement and shoulder. Thirteen of the 17 panels in this section of wall were tied to the sandstone bedrock behind the wall by either 25.4mm or 34.93mm hollow rock bolts. Two panels on each end of the wall were cantilever type walls. The panels that failed had 25.4m hollow rock bolts. A portion of each panel adjacent to both sides of the failure was pulled out from the rock face and appeared to be in imminent danger of also failing. All of the 21 rock bolts in the panels that fell were separated either at the backface of the wall, in the extension from the wall to the rock face or at the rock face. The obligation of an employer to the State requires certain things of him as matters of good citizenship: for instance, that his workmen shall have a living wage, that child labor shall not be employed, that injuries from accidents shall not make workmen a charge upon the State, and that the laborer's children shall have opportunity for education and to become good and useful citizens. Affairs of this kind are not taken up as philanthropy, for the officials of a corporation or a large manufacturing concern may not feel at liberty to spend the funds of their company as prompted simply by motives of kindliness; but they may spend company money on such matters because it is good business. For years, the poisonous effects of lead, phosphorus, and dust have been emphasized in books on industrial hygiene and their elimination has been urged; but the more important and everyday physiology of the workman himself has been neglected. Part of my object in writing this paper is to show how our knowledge of physiology may be applied to working conditions in everyday life. In the interest of industrial laborers, accident compensation laws have been enacted in 33 States. This has been carried forward rapidly, because it has been shown that it pays both employer and employee. A further step is the recognition of sickness and disablement independent of accidents, not only because of their immediate cost to the worker and to the employer, but because continued efficiency in work and business depends largely upon health. Some measure of the importance of health in industry can be gained by the knowledge that records kept by some companies which now make this the subject of careful inquiry show that the time lost by employees, through illness, is several times as much as that lost as the result of industrial accidents. It is true that accidents frequently result in permanent disability or death, but it is equally true that illness is also a cause of permanent disablement or death. Thus the chief difference is that the loss to the employee through accidents occurring in the course of his employment is now generally recognized as a cost

C. E. SIMS*—This is a most interesting and important paper. It is important from two standpoints. First, it has as-spects of being highly accurate and therefore extremely useful to the operating man in showing how far he can go in oxidizing carbon from a steel bath while retaining chromium and the effect of temperature on this limit. Fig 5 is undoubtedly the highlight of the paper, and in checking it against available data, it seems capable of predicting actual results. The other important aspect is the apparently significant fact that reactions within a steel bath, such as between carbon and an oxide, are homogeneous reactions which do not require equilibrium with an external phase. In this case, it seems obvious that the reaction and the equilibrium established were between dissolved carbon (or carbide) and dissolved CrO. The classic reaction which requires equilibrium with solid Cr2O3, did not fit the data. It was recognition of this principle that made Fig 5 possible. G. R. FITTERER*—It might be in assuming the CrO is dissolved in the metal that you are actually approaching the correct factor for activity. If that is true and if the percentages that were used represent an equilibrium constant, this would mean, in effect, that the minimum temperature at which chromium would be reduced by an equivalent percentage of carbon would be about 2400°F from your equation. I believe that is in line with my experience particularly if you deal only with low percentages. J. CHIPMAN†—The author in discussing the equilibrium of the reaction offers two choices of explanation. One postulates an effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of carbon; it would require perhaps more data than are available to us at the present time to test this thoroughly. The other postulate which he offers is a reaction with CrO. This explanation is consistent with physical and chemical principles provided that a solid phase CrO is present, and that is essentially what he is postulating. If that oxide were present one would expect and, I think, almost require the kind of results that he obtained. The weakness of that postulate lies in the lack of confirmatory evidence regarding the presence of solid CrO as such. This should offer an interesting subject for further study. It seems a pity that the theoretical arguments revolving around CrO should have obscured for a moment the very real excellence of this paper. E. CARTER*—I think there is a problem that presents itself in practical application where the metal temperature is from 3200 to 3300 and the temperature desired in pouring is considerably less. B. M. LARSEN†—I get the impression from some of the work that was done earlier that there is probably a localized zone of high temperature at the slag metal interface which effects the removal of the carbon. Without that I wonder if the effect is possible to have a localized superheat and an equilibrium there favorable to low carbon content and

THE creep and stress rupture properties of three grades of aluminum have been reported in a previous paper.' It was found that the stress coefficient of the creep rate and of the rupture time changes at the transition from low temperature-type to high temperature-type deformation. The transition corresponds to the equicohesion for grains and grain boundaries. In order to support the conclusions obtained from the examination of creep and stress rupture data, the deformed specimens were observed metallographically and a few special tests were conducted. The results of these qualitative observations are given in the present paper. Experimental Procedure and Results Table I gives the types of aluminum specimens.' The creep and stress rupture tests were conducted in simple tension at constant stress. Further details on the experimental techniques have been given.' The test bars were electropolished in a perchloric-acetic mixture before testing and were observed after testing without any further preparation unless otherwise specified. Observations of specimen cross-sections were made after electrolytic polishing and etching. The samples were extended along a direction parallel to the longer side of the micrographs of Figs. 12 through 27. The log-log plots of stress vs. minimum creep rate for the three grades of aluminum appear in Figs. 1 and 2. The reference numbers on each curve help relate the photographs to the conditions of testing, indicating where high temperature-type deformation and failure prevailed and where low temperature behavior prevailed. Deformation of Single Crystals at Very High Temperature: An annealed, high purity aluminum specimen was slightly strained at one end and re-annealed. A large single crystal was formed at the strained end of the specimen during re-annealing; the other end remained polycrystalline (see Fig. 3). A stress of 50 psi was applied to the cold specimen to avoid loading at 1100°F. The temperature was then raised to 1100°F, kept at 1100°F for 3 hr, and lowered again to room temperature. Fig. 4 shows the appearance of the specimen after testing. The single crystal deformed by gliding along parallel planes, while the polycrystalline part deformed mainly by grain boundary flow. Some grain growth occurred in the polycrystalline part. Another high purity specimen, which had two large single crystals at the two ends and a polycrystalline zone in the middle portion, was tested at 1000 °F under a stress of 100 psi. The appearance of the sample after test is shown in Fig. 5. Even though considerable slip occurred in the single crystals, the fracture occurred in the weaker polycrystalline portion. Evidence of Grain Boundary Migration during Creep Testing: A high purity, coarse grained specimen, which had a large crystal in the middle portion (see Fig. 6) was tested at 700°F under a constant stress of 175 psi for 30 hr. The appearance of the specimen after testing (Fig. 7) indicates that the large crystal deformed by gliding along parallel planes, while the rest of the specimen deformed mainly by grain boundary flow. During the past 15 years quite an important oil-field has been developed in a region having Wayne county, Ky., as its center, and a large number of wells have been drilled in that and adjacent territory in the search for oil. Many of these wells have been carried to considerable depths below the recognized oil-bearing horizon, and one of them was drilled by Mr. Bryant at Pine Knot, a station on the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific railroad, a few miles north of the point where that road crosses the Kentucky-Tennessee State-line. Many balling and gradation system6 generate self- similar size distributions of the agglomerates. Inspection of the experimental data shows that this is also true of the steady state distributions resulting from the granulation of coarse, partially wet powders, for example, the fertilizer feeds. This result is exploited in the derivations of a number of simple and useful relationships that are pertinent to the analysis of these agglomeration systems. The bonding liquid demand of the granulating charge is a third order polynomial function of the dimensionless ratio of feed particle size to median granule diameter in the weight-fraction distribution. The median size, in turn, is the scale factor or characteristic size parameter in the similarity distribution. The granule size distribution, therefore, is completely specified by the liquid content and the similarity function, and so are the process efficiency and the ungranulated component In the product at steady state.
