SINCE my communication to the Institute at the Baltimore meeting in 1879,* in which I took the lead in emphasizing the importance of a new method in the manufacture of soda, already practiced to some extent in England and on the Continent of Europe, five years have passed. I.then referred particularly to the advantages offered in the United States for this peculiar method, by the ammonia process, namely: 1. At the present time, at least, we have but one mine in this country where rock-salt is mined, namely, at New Iberia, La. On the other hand, we have many localities where brine of various degrees of strength, up to that of cold saturation, is obtained in large quantities. 2. We have excellent fuel, in close proximity to most of the brinecenters. 3. Our supplies of pyrites, to use in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, for use in the manufacture of soda by the Leblanc process, are mostly too far from the brine-centers to permit competition in that line with the more favorable conditions existing in England. 4. Unlike our foreign rivals, we have no large and costly plants, erected on the Leblanc plan, which must be abandoned and exchanged for new but cheaper plants, before the ammonia-soda process can be adopted. 5. We have a constantly increasing demand for soda, which is almost entirely supplied by importation. If slow progress has been made hitherto in this country in the extension of this manufacture (only one plant at Syracuse, erected . under the Solvay patent, having as yet been placed in operation), I still feel gratified in saying that developments in England, and particularly on the Continent of Europe, give ample proof of the

Mechanical properties and optical metallographic characteristics of vanadium containing 53 ppm (wt) H were investigated from, 77° to 298°K. A sharp ductile to brittle transition induced by the presence of hydrogen was observed between 238° and 223°K and a mar-tensitically formed hydride appeared at 200°K. While there appears to be a subtle relationship between the hydride formation and the ductile-brittle transition, it was concluded that the hydride per se was not sufficietzt to cause the severe em brittletnent. On the basis of the metallographic experiments and the results of a Petch analysis it is suggested that the mechanism of the embrittlement involves a reduction of the true surface energy, or cohesion, of the uanadiunz. THAT hydrogen can severely embrittle vanadium is well-documented;'-5 however, the mechanism by which hydrogen induces the observed embrittlement has not been established. It is not known whether the embrittlement of vanadium is caused by the formation of vanadium hydride or by a more subtle role of hydrogen. Until very recently6>' the solid solubility of hydrogen in vanadium at temperatures in the,range of the embrittlement was not known to a useful accuracy. In general, a severe embrittlement of the type produced by the presence of hydrogen in vanadium can be caused by changes in either of two properties of a metal. Either the yield stress of the metal is raised to the extent that plastic deformation at the tip of a crack cannot occur or the cohesive properties of the metal are reduced, at least locally, to the point at which cleavage is the natural response to applied loads. Of course a combination of these is possible. It is not known which of these properties of vanadium is influenced most by the addition of hydrogen. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the role of hydrogen in the embrittlement of vanadium. Accordingly, the solubility of hydrogen in vanadium in the temperature range where embrittlement is most severe was determined, the appearance of vanadium hydride was examined in relation to the initial ductile to brittle transition temperature, and an attempt was made to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on the yield stress and cohesive properties of vanadium. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURES Sample Preparation. The vanadium used in this investigation was prepared by the iodide refining process described by Carlson and owen.' Three ingots, 3 in. diam by 6 in. long, were cold-swaged to 0.096 in. diam, cut into short lengths, and then arc-melted under purified argon into one ingot. This process was repeated to insure a uniform composition in the final ingot. Chemical analysis of the metal is given in Table I. On the basis of work of Loria et a/ .' the following sequence of treatments was performed in order to obtain a uniform equiaxed ultimate grain structure: a) cold swage q-in.-diam ingot to 0.230 in. diam; b) anneal 6 hr at 1000°C in vacuum; c) by cold swaging reduce 81 pct in area in three steps: 0.230 to 0.187 in. diam, 0.187 to 0.150 in. diam, 0.150 to 0.096 in. diam. This sequence provided the desired grain structure after subsequent annealing treatments. Because annealing in evacuated quartz capsules resulted in contamination by oxygen, all anneals in this investigation were performed in a 304 stainless-steel chamber under a dynamic vacuum of 10- I Torr with the vanadium wrapped in tantalum foil. Prior to all annealing treatments the wires were electropolished for 1 min at 16°C in an 80 pct methanol-20 pct sul-furic acid electrolyte at 12.5 v. Following the final reduction the 0.096-in.-diam wire was cut into 2-in. lengths. A 1-in. gage section was reduced to 0.090 in. diam by electropolishing as above. Five different grain sizes were obtained by annealing the 2-in. samples at different temperatures for 8 hr to insure uniform grain size and residual hydrogen removal. James W. Malcolmson died suddenly on Dec. 26, 1917, at Kansas City, Mo., where he had made his home for the past ten years. He was born at Dover, Kent, England, on Oct. 6, 1866. He graduated from the Royal School of Science, London, England, in 1889, and almost immediately after graduation came to Mexico, accepting a position with the Michoacan Railway and Mining Co., as mining and mechanical engineer. His work in the mining profession was carried on principally in Msxiac and the United States. • In 1888, he married Katherine Haden Krause, of Woolwich, Kent, England, and leaves, besides his wife, five sons and one daughter. During Mr. Malcolmson's long and successful career as a mining engineer, he was connected with the following companies: from 1889 to 1893, with the Michoacan Railway and Mining Co., as mining and mechanical engineer; from 1893 to 1898, in various capacities with the Kansas City Smelting & Refining Co.; after the consolidation of the Kansas City Smelting & Refining Co. with the American Smelting & Refining Co., he remained as manager of the mining department in Mexico of the American Smelting & Refining Co. until 1902. In 1902, he located in El Paso, and took up the practice of his profession as a consulting engineer. While there, he was consulting engineer for the famous and rich Pedrazzini mines at Chispas, in the State of Sonora. He was instrumental in organizing the La Republics mine in Chihuahua, and for a time acted as consulting engineer for the property. He remained in El Paso until 1907 and then moved to Kansas City and became associated with the United States & Mexican Trust Co., as consulting engineer. In 1909, he became connected with The Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co., as its consulting engineer, and continued in this connection and in the general practice of his profession as consulting engineer until his death.. His general policy in connection with the Lucky Tiger company was always a progressive one and the success of the enterprise can be largely attributed to him and his good judgment. Mr. Malcolmson contributed several articles to the Institute at different times, one of them being on the ore deposits of the Sierra Mojada Mining District, in 1901. Much of his work was in Mexico, and during his long residence in that country he acquired a very thorough knowledge of the Mexican people and their customs. During the revolution, from 1910 to 1916, this knowledge was of great value in connection with his work for the Lucky Tiger company, and often assisted greatly in keeping the property going. Mr. Malcolmson was one of the very widely known men in his profession; he was everywhere held in the very highest regard, and his position among men in the mining profession was an enviable and honorable one. At the time of his death, besides being consulting engineer for the Lucky Tiger company, he was interested in mines in the Miami zinc fields and was acting as consulting engineer for two of the operating properties there. He invested to quite an extent in real estate when he moved to Kansas City in 1907 and his investments in this line proved successful.

THE mines of the United States Coal & Coke Co. are located in the Pocahontas coal field, in McDowell County, West Virginia. Twelve plants have been opened and equipped, of which, by reason of the present business depression, only nine are now in operation. These twelve plants serve eighteen mines; some of the plants having several openings, in either the same seam or in different seams, tributary to the same tipple. Only nine of these mines are now being worked at the plants in operation. Construction work was begun in 1902, and coal from the first three plants started was shipped in December of that year. An additional plant was opened in 1903, two in 1904, two in 1905, two in 1907 and the last two in 1908. On Jan. 1, 1915, the plants have been in operation an average period of 8.8 years. The rules of the company, which have been in operation since work was first begun, are similar to those in use by the H. C. Frick Coke Co. at its mines in Pennsylvania, in which "Safety First" was incorporated as early as 1907; and it has always been the policy of both companies to look carefully after the safety of their employees. Although the field is an extension of the old Pocahontas field, the mines, located upon a new branch railroad, are away by themselves, and, as is usual in such cases, the class of labor attracted at first was temporary in character. The rapid development of the mines required the employment of many new men and officials each year; and, while the accident record from 1904 to 1909 was as good as the average of the field, it was felt to be not as good as it could be made, and a determined campaign was inaugurated for preventing accidents of all kinds. Fig. .1 shows the tonnage of coal produced per fatality, both total and for inside accidents only, at our mines; the tonnage per fatality of all West Virginia mines, and of those in the Pocahontas field.

I. Historical. Barite has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. Geographical and Geological Distribution. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State—namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties: Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties—Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell—but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid combustible mineral substance resulting from the alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. It occurs in nature with varying percentages of mineral matter associated with and incorporated into the coalified material. If the amount of this inorganic mineral matter is sufficiently small, and if selective mining can be practiced so as to avoid the incorporation of ash- bearing material from adjacent strata and/or parting seams, the coal can be used as-mined. Otherwise, it must be given a preparation treatment. In 1980 the bulk of the approximately 525 coal preparation plants were located in the eastern half of the U.S., largely in the Appalachian and to a lesser extent in the midwest coal fields (1). Only 17 of these preparation plants were located in the west; these were in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. In the past, however, a great many more preparation plants were operated in these and other western states. The upsurge in both the domestic and world- wide demand for quality coking and steam coal will certainly lead to an increase in the number of preparation plants in the west. In fact, there has been a massive development of coal mines and their associated preparation plants across our northern border in Alberta and British Columbia, largely to serve the export coking and steam coal market. Most of the tremendous increase in newly-mined coal in the western U.S. has come from thick seams of inherently low-sulfur, low- ash coal, easy to mine selectively without significant contamination with ash-forming minerals and requiring no preparation. ALTHOUGH the firm in which the writer is a partner is not exactly the pioneer in the coring of rotary-drilled wells in Southern California, it has taken the lead in bringing coring to its present status. To the Shell Company of California belongs the, honor of having first used the core drill in its endeavors to locate subsurface structures west of Santa Fe Springs. Following those operations, similar work was done near Wasco in the San, Joaquin Valley. Results of the latter core drilling were successful, in that they made it possible to determine the under-ground structure. At, about the same time that the Shell Company was doing the work at Wasco, it was experimenting in the use of the core drill in connection with rotary-drilled holes. The oil sands in its dis¬covery well at Signal Hill were located by means of the rotary core drill. In 1921, in view of the trouble that the operators were having in the fields of Southern California, and particularly at Huntington Beach, R. E. Collom, of the State Mining Bureau, called their attention to the possibilities of the core drill for eliminating many of the serious problems that were facing them. It was this same difficulty encountered by the operator in locating the oil sands that caused the writer to enter into con-tract core drilling; late in 1921 the California operators became converted to the advantages of that method, and in the short space of one year core drilling in rotary-drilled holes has risen from a theory to an established practice.

THE Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division for 1945 is one of the most versatile and best-known men in this industry, with wide experience in research and operations and in handling both the men and the materials that are used in enormous quantities. Erle G. (Doe) Hill was born in Santa Ana, (alit, April 21, 1890 and graduated (Bachelor of Science) in mining and metallurgy from the University of California in 1913. For the next five years lie held a variety of jobs as miner, foreman, and null superintendent in gold, silver, copper, and quicksilver mines in the West and in Mexico. As Doe was an individual endowed with an exceptional amount of horse sense, he left the West in 1918, to become instructor of mining engineering and ore dressing at Carnegie Institute of Technology, and while in that post did considerable consulting work as a geologist and mining engineer. In 1920, still possessing the same common sense. he got out of mining engineering and geology and became associate professor of metallurgy at the University of Pittsburgh, a position he retained for nearly ten years.

Silver occurs in nature in major, minor and variable amounts in a very large variety of minerals and in several mineral species in the same ore. Because these minerals may respond differently to the same flotation or leaching agents, detailed studies to establish the correct silver mineralogy become essential for optimum recoveries in those situations where the silver is treated as a primary product. On the other hand, fine grain sizes, which often affect gold recoveries, are not generally as critical in silver metallurgy, due to the lower market price which allows for more of the element to remain In the tailings before incurring in economical losses.

The industrial importance of the sillimanite group of minerals depends upon the beneficial properties exhibited by porcelains and refractories in which substantial amounts of these minerals are utilized as raw materials. The presence of "sillimanite" (now known to be the closely related mineral, mullite) in conventional porcelains and refractories has been known since before the turn of the century. As early as 1906 German investigators observed a direct correlation between the "sillimanite" content of a porcelain and its electrical and mechanical properties. Acting upon this discovery, U. S. Bureau of Standards investigators during World War I developed improved pyrometer tubes and spark plug porcelains, by increasing substantially the amount of "sillimanite" at the expense of quartz. The success of these experiments, first reported in 1918, at once aroused a lively interest in the location of natural sources of sillimanite and its related minerals. As a result of diligent search, the large andalusite deposits in California were discovered in 1919. Within the next several years large deposits of kyanite and sillimanite in India and kyanite in the United States had been reported. The search for these minerals in quantity, by both private and governmental agencies, has continued unabated during the ensuing forty years. A number of domestic deposits of kyanite have been worked during the past 30 years. Of these, only the Virginian and South Carolinian deposits are currently in substantial production. The only commercial andalusite production in the United States has been in California and Nevada. A dumortierite deposit in Nevada, known since 1917 but ignored for want of a commercial use, began production in 1925. A topaz occurrence in South Carolina has yielded a small production since about 1940. Domestic production of andalusite, dumortierite and topaz had virtually ceased by 1950. There has never been any commercial development of domestic sillimanite deposits. Kyanite has been mined almost continuously in India since about 1922. The remoteness of the large deposits of Indian sillimanite had caused it to be neglected until 1949. In that year sillimanite production began, and it has continued to the present. South African andalusite has been marketed from the 1930's until the present time. From 1944 to 1955 Kenya, British East Africa, was an important producer of kyanite. Commercial deposits of kyanite in Ontario, Canada should soon be in production. The first production of kyanite in Europe began in Austria in 1953. No commercial deposits of mullite are known anywhere in the world. It is of interest to note that synthetic mullite, which as "sillimanite" first elicited interest in the A12O3-rich aluminosilicate refractories, has enjoyed a marked increase in production in recent years. This is a result of the gradual depletion of known deposits of high-quality kyanite and related minerals."' Composition The sillimanite group includes kyanite, andalusite, and sillimanite, all having the same chemical composition (A12O3•SiO2) but different physical properties. THE Mineral Industry Education Division of AIME has long been interested in geophysical education. Organized in 1938, a Committee on Geophysical Education presented a number of reports in succeeding years. The AIME is an engineering society; hence it might be expected that the interest of the Mineral Industry Education Division would have centered about the relation of courses in geophysics to engineering education. However, this was not the case. The burden of the discussion held under the auspices of the Committee on Geophysical Education bore on geophysics in general and particularly on its relation to geology. In the decade that has passed since those meetings much water has flowed under the bridge. Not only have the geophysical sciences developed at an extraordinarily rapid rate but the practical importance and the range of their applications have spread in ever widening circles and have even assumed a very prominent place in research programs of the military, the Army, the Navy and, particularly, the Geophysical Research Directorate of the Air Force at Cambridge, Mass. So enormously have the geophysical sciences as such grown in scope and in degree of specialization that no one man in a lifetime of study can hope to master the theoretical and experimental complexities or even to follow intelligently in the published literature all the varied accomplishments of basic research in these 'fields. As in the other sciences, most of the results of geophysical research have potential economic value and are being applied to a wider and wider range of human needs. Here we see a parallel with the older sciences and their relation to engineering. Whenever the applications of scientific results required the special experimental background, the economic outlook, and the practical knowledge characteristic of the engineer, a curriculum in that type of engineering grew up in the colleges and universities. In the words of the "Report of the Committee on Adequacy and Standards of Engineering Education" in the. January 1952 number of the Journal of Engineering Education: "Engineering education in America was not developed after a preconceived plan. It evolved in parallel with the needs of a growing country, a country engaged in the development of a vast industrialization. From the first it filled a practical need, and its design emanated largely from an evaluation of the professional requirement." The advent of the railroad created a need for scientifically trained engineers and the response was the curriculum in civil engineering. The development of steam power created the demand for a curriculum in mechanical engineering. Neither of these types of engineers was trained to cope with the requirements of electrical power, and so there came to be a curriculum in electrical engineering. The advent of radio communication and of electronics during the first World War and in the years that followed resulted in the establishment of electronics engineering, sometimes within the curriculum in electrical engineering and sometimes independent of it. The complexities of industrial management have created an ever increasing demand for industrial engineers and the consequent building up of a curriculum in industrial engineering. The wide industrial application of chemical processes required a type of engineer whose background was training in chemistry but who was able to design processes and plants on an industrial scale; hence we have the curriculum in chemical engineering. The advent of the airplane created an entirely new set of problems which were solved by the training of aeronautical engineers. Many of these have called for more and more science and mathematics. Unmined blocks in the Sewickley seam, surrounded by worked out areas, have been found to transmit overburden oads through the interval strata to the Pittsburgh seam workings 90 ft below. Operating experiences under these conditions are described in this paper. IT has always been understood, in northern West Virginia where both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams are mined, that pillaring or splitting in the lower Pittsburgh seam could break the interval strata and make mining in the overlying Sewickley difficult or impossible. In some instances, however, mining methods practiced in the overlying Sewickley have reversed the problem, resulting in a shifting of the intermediate layer and destroying valuable acreages of the Pittsburgh seam below. The Pittsburgh seam in this area is, on the average, 102 in. thick. About 18 in. of low-quality head coal are left for roof protection as it is mined. Immediately over the coal are two draw slates, two rider seams, and a good hard black shale, locally called black rock, which serves as a permanent roof where draw slates and riders are taken down on certain main haulroads. In most areas mined in this seam in the past the bottom has been satisfactory but soft. However, in areas now being mined by the Christopher Coal Co. in Monongalia County the bottom is very hard and unyielding. The Sewickley seam, lying 85 ft above the Pittsburgh, will average nearly 70 in. in thickness and is overlain by massive shales and sandstones. Much of the seam is mined only down to the "sheep skin," a hard band about 4 in. above the bottom, which is composed of relatively hard shale. Fig. 1 shows a typical cross-section through the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams in the area being discussed. The thin Redstone seam is not deep-mined but is stripped in some locations where it outcrops. Most of the Sewickley seam in the Morgantown areas has been mined out from 10 to 30 years. There are at present only two large mines and five or six others of small production operating in that seam. Mining systems in the past were generally of the room and pillar type with some full pillar extraction. This seam in the Scott's Run area was operated by as many as thirty or forty different companies at one time, during an era beset with strikes, market failures, and depressions. Most of the barrier pillars along the many main haulroads were abandoned, and blocks of Sewickley coal that would be fully recovered with today's machinery were left unmined when conditions became anything less than favorable. Consequently the mined-out Sewickley is spotted throughout with solid blocks varying in size from 100x100 ft to 200x400 ft and larger. It is these unmined Sewickley blocks surrounded by worked-out portions that have caused transmissions of roof stresses to underlying Pittsburgh mining areas, see Fig. 2, resulting in untold difficulty. As the Christopher Coal Co. operates both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams, accurate maps of workings in both seams are readily available and are regularly consulted. The first Pittsburgh squeeze attributed to overlying Sewickley blocks occurred in the Arkwright mine, where a shuttle car crew was developing a section consisting of seven panel headings. These entries were being driven in solid coal 3400 ft from the nearest worked-out Pittsburgh area. As mining advanced it was noticed that certain ribs began to slough and certain areas to show signs

As the Christopher Coal Co. operates both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams, accurate maps of workings in both seams are readily available and are regularly consulted. The m.echanica1 properties, at high lzomologous temperatures, of the intermetallic compounds InzBi and Mg17A112 were measured as a .function of temperature, applied strain rate, previous thermal and mechanical history, and composition. Mgl,Al12 was investigated ilz compression, whereas Zn,Bi was investigated in tension. A decrease inflow stress with increasing strain was observed jor both alloys. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the dislocation-multiplication processes in these materials. MANY intermetallic compounds are reported to undergo a brittle-ductile transition at high homologous temperatures.' There is evidence in the literature that some of these compounds exhibit a large yield drop when plastically deformed.'j3 Both of these forms of behavior are shown by the covalent elements germanium and silicon4,5 and also by certain ionic compounds.8 The present work is a study of the deformation, at high homologous temperatures (>2/3 Tm), of two intermetallic compounds, In2Bi and Mg17Al12. InzBi has a disordered hexagonal structure7 (c/a = 0.598) and a solubility range of 32.3 — 33.2 at. pct Bi.8 It has a melting range from 72° to 89°C. Mg17Al12 has an ordered bcc (A12 type)7 structure and exists over the range 50 to 60 at. pct Mg8 with a melting range from 437° to 462°C. We have been unable to find any reference to previous investigations of the mechanical properties of BiIn,. Novikovg has reported that cast samples of Mg17A112 show ductility, when bend-tested, at temperatures above 380°C. EXPERIMENTAL Ingots of In2Bi and Mg17Al12 were melted under an argon atmosphere and cast, in situ, in a graphite crucible. The materials used were of 99.99 pct purity. The alloys prepared contained 66.9 at. pct In in the case of In2Bi and 58.4 at. pct Mg in the case of m17A112. The ingots were homogenized and then extruded. Two-in.-diam Mg17Al12 ingots were extruded at 375°C to give 3/8-in.-diam rod. The rate of formation of this rod was 0.25 in. per min. One-in.-diam InzBi ingots were extruded at 20°C, using a rate of 1 in. per min, to give 1/8-in.-diam rod. In both cases the extruded rod had a recrystal- lized, fine-grain, structure. (For Mg17Al12, d = 11.2 µ; for BiIn2, d = 22 µ.) Mechanical-property determinations were made in a hard-beam machine, in tension in the case of In2Bi and in compression with Mgl7Al12. The tensile tests were on specimens having a gage length of 1.1/2 in. and a diameter of 1/8 in. The compression tests on Ml7A112 were on specimens of 3/8 in. diam by 3/8 in. high and the ends were coated with poly-tetrafluorethylene to minimize friction. RESULTS In2Bi. Fig. 1 shows, particularly at the higher applied strain rates, that In2Bi exhibits a marked yield drop as the deformation increases to about 2 pct, after which the material shows neither hardening nor softening up to 15 pct strain. The magnitude of the yield drop, the stress in the region of flow under constant stress (the stress plateau), and the 0.5 pct proof stress were all dependent upon the applied strain rate according to an expression of the form

The burden of the discussion held under the auspices of the Committee on Geophysical Education bore on geophysics in general and particularly on its relation to geology. In the decade that has passed since those meetings much water has flowed under the bridge. Not only have the geophysical sciences developed at an extraordinarily rapid rate but the practical importance and the range of their applications have spread in ever widening circles and have even assumed a very prominent place in research programs of the military, the Army, the Navy and, particularly, the Geophysical Research Directorate of the Air Force at Cambridge, Mass. So enormously have the geophysical sciences as such grown in scope and in degree of specialization that no one man in a lifetime of study can hope to master the theoretical and experimental complexities or even to follow intelligently in the published literature all the varied accomplishments of basic research in these fields. As in the other sciences, most of the results of geophysical research have potential economic value and are being applied to a wider and wider range of human needs. The early records of coal in Kentucky by Walker and Gist have already been mentioned. Thomas Hutchins was aware of it in 1778, or perhaps several years earlier, as in writing of the Buffaloe, now Green, River, he said, "several persons who have ascended this River, say, that Salt Springs, Coal, Lime and Free Stone etc. are to be found in a variety of places."1 The next record found is an entry to Ellis and Marshall, of 878 acres on Coal Bank Creek, in the, then Fayette County on July 14, 1784.2 The settlement might have been made, or the name given, some time before. Hermeline, in 1783, mentioned iron ore and coal on the Green River,' although he had not been west of the Susquehanna River; his knowledge of coal might have come from Hutchins, although the latter made no mention of iron in that locality. In November 1790, coal was mined on Sturgeon's Creek in Lee County and floated in three barges down the Kentucky River to Cleveland's Ferry, where it was hauled to Lexington. The results were not equal to the expectations, and it was 1793 before the experiment was. repeated 4 In 1791, the estate of Samuel Wharton advertised for sale 31,000 acres "in the county of Jefferson, on the North Side of the Green or Buffaloe river, in the State of Virginia."5 In November 1795 three patents were issued for land in the then Lee County, aggregating 130,000 acres. These patents cover much of Harlan County. The descriptions of these surveys mention passing stone coal. on Rough Branch of Martin's Fork, a "great deal of stone coal" on Blacksnake Branch of Pucketts Creek, and "a quantity of stone coal" probably on Crummies Creek.6 Jedediah Morse, in The American Gazetteer, 1798, said that in Kentucky "in many places there are appearances of potter's clay, and coal in abundance."
