The past year has had no revolutionary change in the process of petroleum refining, although there have been improvements and developments in practically every phase of operation, due largely, perhaps, to economic pressure. A few years ago, a Mid-Continent skimming plant using 35 gravity crude obtained 28 per cent. gasoline and naphtha; 9 per cent. kerosene, and the remaining yield gave gas oil and fuel oil. Figuring manufacturing cost, but not including sales, transportation, overhead and depreciation, the realization was $1.45 per bbl. of crude. Today, a thoroughly modern and up-to-date skimming plant, having all latest equipment, shows a realization of $1.74 per bbl. on the same basis. Thus it is evident that progressive developments have taken place in the last 2 or 3 years when potential earnings have been increased about 20 per cent. The average refiner is compelled to exert his utmost ingenuity in order to operate with a profitable margin. He has two factors to consider—recovery of maximum yields of profitable oils and the reduction of operating expenses. For the past 8 years, the margin between price of gasoline and cost of crude has grown narrower, constantly. Both these prices are determined by external conditions and not by the refiner himself, but the refiner might have been able to increase that margin had he more carefully controlled his output, limiting his production of light oils to current consumption. Be that as it may, this same economic pressure has given impetus to progress in improvements of primary distillation equipment, including stills, towers and heat-saving devices. A pipe still and bubble cap fractionating equipment can now replace a battery of shell stills, giving better yields, better control, elimination of rerunning and lowering of operating costs. The most recent pipe stills are being equipped either with radiant-heat furnaces or air-preheating systems and improved heat exchange equipment. THIS note describes an unusual result obtained in an electron microscope investigation of cavities produced in commercial type 304 stainless steel irradiated in a thermal reactor (ETR) at 290°C to a high neutron flu-ence, 6 x loz1 n per sq cm. The analysis of the steel used is given in Table I. The unusual result is that the calculated quantity of helium gas produced by transmutation during the irradiation, 12 ppm, is less than one-tenth the amount of gas necessary to balance the surface tension of the observed cavities produced in the steel during ETR irradiation. Therefore, the cavities would be expected to behave like voids; however, they behave like "gas filled" bubbles. The maximum quantity of helium produced in the steel by B" transmutation was 8 ppm. In addition, the amount of helium formed by (n, (1) fast neutron reactions with the major alloy constituents and nitrogen was calculated to be 4 ppm based on the tabulated differential or effective fission-averaged cross sections of elements in type 304 stainless steel irradiated in typical thermal reactors.', In previous investigations concerning commercial austenitic stainless steel irradiated in a thermal reactor, the amount of helium gas calculated to be produced by transmutation has always been significantly greater than the amount calculated on the basis that the bubbles were gas filled, PPs= 2y/R. The balance of the gas was assumed to be in bubbles smaller than could be detected on the electron micrographs. Accordingly, the bubbles were attributed to helium produced from transmutation of impurity boron by thermal neutrons. These bubbles were not uniformly dispersed in the matrix but were located principally at grain boundaries, or were radially positioned around a few precipitates located in the matrix and at the grain bundaries., 4 Voids have also been observed in austenitic stainless steel irradiated at high temperature to high neutron fluences in the EBR-I1 and Dounreay Fast Reactors. The voids were uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. The amounts of helium gas produced by transmutation during these irradiations were less than one-tenth the amounts needed to balance the surface tension of the voids formed by the fast reactor irradiation. The fast reactor results are quite analogous to those reported here for the ETR irradiated steel. Electron microscope examination of the fast reactor irradiated material after a 1 hr postirradiation annealing at 900°C disclosed that essentially all the voids had been eliminated. The authors stated that the voids had developed due to the high concentration of vacancies produced during irradiatin., 6, ' The microstructure of the ETR irradiated material as-tested at 75O°C, Fig. 1, contained about 2 X lot5 cavities per cm3 with an average diameter of 110A. With the Van der Waals b correction and y = 1500 ergs per cm2, 300 ppm He would balance the surface tension of the observed cavities. Stereoscopic examination of the electron micrographs showed that the cavities were neither preferentially located near the grain boundaries nor highly concentrated at specific regions or precipitates. The cavities were nearly uniformly distributed throughout the matrix, on dislocations and at grain boundaries. These observations imply that the cavities were not the sole results of B'O

The diffusion of lead and of trace amounts of bismuth in liquid lead have been investigated by the capillary method, using ROD and ROE as tracers. The results are compared with existing theories of diffusion in liquids, the agreement with theory being fair. The heat of activation for self-diffusion in lead is found experimentally to be close to the corresponding activation energy obtained from viscosity data. The pioneer data of Groh and von Hevesi for the self-diffusion of liquid lead, using ThB as a tracer, fit in with the present results. OMPARED with the volume of effort expended on solid state diffusion, there has been little attention paid to diffusion in liquid metals. A review of experimental work in this field, covering most of the studies up to 1951, was given by Jost.' More recent papers include those by Hoffman2 on self-diffusion in mercury, Morgan and Kitchener" and Stark, Shchilishchev, and Kazachkev4 on the diffusion of various elements in liquid iron, and Grace and Derge on the diffusion of bismuth in bismuth-lead alloys. THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civiliza-tion as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the GEORGIA PRODUCTION UNITED STATES PRODUCTION IMPORTS Fig. 1.-KAOLIN PRODUCTION AND IMPORTS. commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported.

The methodology employed to develop a digital simulation of the Brenda Mines Ltd., Peachland, B. C., secondary crushing plant is described. Methodology includes data acquisition, data adjustment, model building, and the construction of a simulator structure. The simulator was utilized to study the effects of secondary and tertiary crusher close side settings, secondary screen opening, plant feed rate, and percent + 1 in. in the feed on the following responses: percent - 1/2 in. in the final product, plant reduction ratio, circulating load ratio, and screen efficiency. Results are presented in graphical form.

MarTENSITIC a has been observed to form spontaneously from the retained ß phase during the preparation of thin foil specimens of metastable Ti-Cr alloys containing from 6.9 to 20 wt pet Cr. Similar spontaneous martensite reactions have been reported in thin foils of 0 brass' and other alloys.2 4 The absence of retained austenite in iron-based alloys has also been attributed to spontaneous decomposition during thinning.5 The present work indicates that a unique situation occurs during which the spontaneous transformation takes place when the transitional ? phase is present in the as-quenched or partially aged ß phase. Alloys containing 6.9, 7.0, 8.0, 12.0, and 20.0 wt pet Cr were prepared by the levitation melting of "io-chrome" chromium and iodide titanium. The 0.5-in.-diam ingots were vacuum-annealed at 1000oC, and wafers 0.020 in. thick were then cut from the ingots. These wafers were wrapped in molybdenum foil, encapsulated in Vycor under a reduced pressure of purified helium, and then held for 30 min at 1000°C. The specimens were quenched in water to retain the metastable high-temperature ß phase. The quenched alloys were thinned by mechanical grinding to about 0.005 in. thick, then electropolished in a solution of 300 ml methyl alcohol, 175 ml n-butyl alcohol, and 30 ml perchloric acid at a temperature of -40°C. Needle specimens 0.005 to 0.010 in. diam were taken from each ingot and heat-treated with the foil specimens. Two cogent and ubiquitous facts have supported a constant search by the ore processing industry for better wear resistant materials in equipment. First, designs and types of equipment change or improve continually to meet the economic and physical demands of different and/or leaner ores. Second, practically all equipment is subject to impact and abrasion conditions that probably are more severe and extensive than in any other industry. Development and testing by operators and equipment manufacturers alike, has produced an extensive variety of longer lasting metal alloys, rubber, plastics, ceramics and other materials to improve equipment performance under different specific conditions. The need for diversified materials becomes obvious upon the simple realization that no two beneficiation operations are identical. Among the variables in the handling of ore are: 1. Size and weight of ore particles. 2. Hardness and sharpness of ore particles. 3. Concentration of ore particles in liquid or gas suspension. 4. Velocity and direction of particle impact toward equipment surface. 5. Coefficient of friction between ore particles and equipment surface. 6. Temperature of operation. 7. Chemical environment of operation.

Heap leaching is used by the Carlin Gold Mining Co., Carlin, Nev., to supplement conventional processing of gold ore by agitation-leaching and countercurrent decantation. Selected open-pit ore containing about 0.072 oz Au per ton is crushed to 3/4 inch, dumped by truck on an asphalt pad, and leached by sprinkling with dilute cyanide solution for 7 days. The heap is then drained and removed by front-end loader to tailings disposal. About 70 percent of the gold is dissolved. Leach solution from the heap joins the pregnant solution from countercurrent decantation for gold recovery by zinc precipitation. Four leach pads, each with a capacity of 1,400 tons of ore, are in use. About 10,000 tons of ore are heap leached monthly from about April through October. Heap leaching is recessed during freezing weather. Labor, equipment, and reagent requirements for heap leaching are presented.

The practice of carbonizing steel for the purpose of case-hardening has assumed great commercial importance within the past 10 years. Formerly, case-hardened steel was held in more or less contempt, since it was considered a cheap substitute for tool-steel. This is no longer the case. The development of the motor-car industry, and coincidentally that of modern alloy-steels, has resulted in overcoming many difficulties formerly experienced in case-hardening. This result has been accomplished by increased knowledge regarding the analysis of the steel which would respond most readily to case-hardening, and by more careful methods of treatment of the carbonized steel. The ordinary method of carbonizing consists in packing the steel with the carbonizing-material in cast-iron boxes and placing them in a furnace at a temperature of from 1,500° to 1,900° F. for a time sufficient to give the required depth of " case." The steel is then either quenched directly from the box, or is allowed to cool without unpacking, and finally given a single hardening-heat, or, for special work, two or three heats. During the year 1911, more than 100,000 tons of carbonizing-material was sold in the United States, at an average price of probably $55 per ton. More than 85 per cent. of this material consisted of granulated bone. Within the past four years, many manufactured compounds have been placed on the market, consisting largely of some form of carbon or carbonaceous material, with or without the addition of chemicals. Steel will absorb carbon placed in contact with it at the temperature of the atmosphere. The reaction is exceedingly slow, but increases rapidly with increasing temperature. Below

RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT ITS MEETING ON APRIL 17, 1936 Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the " official ticket" for officers and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the Committee. NOMINATIONS TO BE MADE Each year the Nominating Committee is to select "official" candidates for eight places, as follows: (1) President and Director (2) Vice-President and Director (3) Vice-President and Director (4) Director (5) Director (6) Director (7) Director (8) Director GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION The Bylaws provide that "the Nominating Committee shall, so far as practicable, distribute representation on the Board geographically." Pursuant to this provision, the United States, Canada and Mexico have been divided into fifteen districts, as shown on the official map.* Districts 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12,13,14, and 15 are assigned one Directorship each; District 2, three Directorships; District 3, eight Directorships; District 4, two Directorships; and Districts 7, 8, and 9, two Directorships between them. It will be the duty of the Nominating Committee to make selections that will give effect to this allocation of Directorships. There is nothing to prevent a Director being named to succeed himself. Attention is called to the: fact that many Institute members now resident in New York formerly lived in the West, South, or North and still have intimate business connections that compel them to visit various parts of the country periodically. Such men are particularly valuable as Directors and their nomination and election tends to minimize the objection that a large number of Directors reside in New York.

If New England were located in some distant and almost inaccessible region, there is no doubt that its mineral resources would have been ere this well developed and generally acknowledged, but laboring under the disadvantage of nearness, it has been neglected. Its surface, moreover, is not cut up by mountains and canons, and the remnants of many of the old ridges are extensively covered by glacial drift. Having for the past ten months been engaged in the development of a mineral district in Southeastern Maine, 1 would take this opportunity to lay before the Institute sketches of results, and try to give some idea of the formations as found. The Sullivan Mining District extends from the town of Franklin, through Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsborough, from northwest to southeast, about sixteen miles. A general idea of this locality may be gathered from the map accompanying. (Fig. 1). The choice of a nonferrous metal or alloy for a given Application is frequently predicated upon a consideration of properties other than merely the capacity to withstand stress. When ability to withstand stress is the dominant engineering requisite of the material to be used, economic considerations seldom lead to the choice of nonferrous metals and alloys. In most instances where a nonferrous metal is used it is because of some special quality of either corrosion resistance, electrical properties, thermal properties, antifriction, or fabrication advantage that commends its application. The mechanical properties, as a rule, present an incidental engineering consideration entirely secondary to the special quality deciding its use. Indeed, great ingenuity has often been exhibited by engineers and metallurgists in overcoming the mechanical shortcomings of a nonferrous base material. in order to take advantage of some outstanding property. . With this thought in mind, we might better appreciate some of the problems in stress design. encountered with nonferrous metals and alloys pertinent to a symposium on their creep characteristics. Our considerations must necessarily be far from complete because of the broad range of materials in the nonferrous category for which creep properties assume a technical interest. Creep deformation of these metals can be subject for study at temperatures ranging from ambient to incandescent, depending upon which one is under consideration. Whereas the steel metallurgist thinks of creep as an essentially high-temperature engineering consideration, the same is not necessarily true in the field at hand. The diversity of the creep problems in the nonferrous field is perhaps accountable to some extent for its virginity as a symposium subject. Each research has necessarily been sponsored by some organization or group interested either in promoting the use of a certain nonferrous base or in obtaining data toward the solution of a mechanical difficulty encountered in applying a material indispensable for its special attributes. Perhaps as many techniques of creep testing have been used as there are base metals implied under "nonferrous." Some of the creep problems that have occasioned researches are associated with steam-pressure vessels such as tubes, drums, castings, and forgings of copper-base and nickel-base alloys, cable sheathings of lead and lead-base alloys, electrical transmission lines of copper and aluminum, engine parts die-cast from alloys based on zinc, aluminum, copper— soldered and brazed joints-—as well as numerous duties at extremely high temperatures met with alloys based on cobalt, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, and other precious or semiprecious metals. Postwar technology will have the benefit of much creep research on nonferrous metals, which for reasons of security cannot be discussed on this occasion. SINCE the outbreak of the European war, few problems of raw-material supply have commanded more nation-wide attention than potash. It is well known that before the war the domestic production of potash was an insignificant percentage of the imports. The average annual importation of raw potash salts for several years prior to 1914 was slightly over 300,000 net tons, and f other potash manure salts about 700,0000 tons. The sudden and almost total cessation f these imports created a unique and stringent situation. Methods of recovering potash from feldspar and other native mineral sources, and reclamation from hitherto waste products, have received a marked impetus. Soaring prices have been a keen-incentive to research and industrial development. Although several brief articles concerning the possibilities of potash recovery have appeared in recent trade journals, it still may be a matter of some surprise to the average technical mind that potash might be reclaimed as a profitable byproduct in the manufacture of pig iron. At the present time it may be of special interest to present some data, largely of a technical nature, on this subject. A fairly thorough search of the literature reveals a number of articles concerning salts of the alkali metals in the blast furnace. Many of them deal with the-theoretical role f alkali cyanides in the furnace. Several discuss the, probable effect of the alkalies on the furnace brickwork. Two or three ambitious patents have been granted for reclaiming potash or other products from blast-furnace gas. However, we have heard nothing further as to the practical application of these patents. Little literature of importance has appeared during the last 10 years concerning alkalies in blast-furnace practice, and I have discovered no record whatsoever as to the actual sale or commercial disposal f flue dust for its , potash content until this was inaugurated in our plant at Bethlehem. The deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of copper, resulting from heating in contact with reducing gases, is well known, but the mechanism of the action does not appear to have been definitely established. The purpose of the present investigation was not to determine the exact variations in physical quality of commercial copper, with its various impurities, as dependent upon the composition of the gas, temperature of exposure, etc., but rather to study the nature of the action and the conditions under which it occurs. The physical result of the so-called "gassing." of copper has been generally described as the development of "brittleness." There appears to be a striking decrease in tensile strength, associated with a considerable loss of ductility, and a small copper strip or wire affected in this way can he snapped in two when bent. Larger articles may have an outer layer alone affected, which can be detached from the core by hammering or bending. Perhaps the earliest reference to this subject is that of Heyn1 in 1900, and among the later observers may be mentioned Archbutt,2 Bengough and Hill,3 Johnson,4 Mathewson and Thalheimer,5 and Ruder .6 Bengough and Hill, while working with arsenical copper, were the first to suggest the possibility of the formation of gases within the copper itself, while Ruder endeavored to explain the action by the reduction of the

RECENT contributions to the literature relating to the problems of coal mine management have discussed the pros, and cons of unionism among the miners as bearing upon the immediate problems of the industry, but have devoted singularly little thought to the underlying causes, and the fundamental reasons. for the remarkable growth of union sentiment among the miners, a growth paralleled only in the case of the railroad workers. It is all very well to revile their organization, its obvious stupidity and stubbornness, its multitude of economic and social crimes, but it is also well to realize that there have been deep-seated causes for all these things, causes that, while operating in all industries and amongst all workers, have in none of them found the optimum conditions for development such as exist in the coal mining industry. The rise of the United Mine Workers of America to a position of importance in the industry synchronizes roughly with the introduction of short-time operation; of course seasonal shutdowns and slow-time working have always been evident in our bituminous fields, but these evils have grown steadily worse since 1895 and the U. M. W. of A. has grown steadily stronger; yet short-time operation alone cannot account for this tremendous growth for, witness the signal failures that have always attended the attempts to organize the harvest workers, the fruit packers and other highly seasonal workers.

THE MAJOR use of spelter has always been for the coating of iron and steel products, the process of coating being known as "galvanizing" and the products themselves as "galvanized," except for a couple of years during the war, when the consumption for brass making became superior, in the United States at least, owing to military demands. Since 1919, however, the consumption of spelter for galvanizing has regained the premier position, but not with such a long lead over brass making as previous to the war. The last development is ascribable to two main reasons, viz., an increased demand for brass in new industries, especially automobile manufacturing; and a diminished use of spelter per unit of iron and steel galvanized. MAJOR IMPORTANCE OF SUBJECT The last mentioned matter has already been the subject of some discussion and of some literature. The galvanizers have been charged with deliberately thinning their zinc coatings, with the consequence of producing inferior goods and thereby jeopardizing the whole galvanizing business. Zinc producers have been concerned about this, out of consideration of both the less use of zinc per unit of iron and steel and the fear that, the number of units produced may be curtailed. It has been argued, among other things, that the present policy of American galvanizers would impair their ability to compete in foreign markets with British galvanizers, who have been represented as making a superior product.

In June, 1965, Sanderson and scully5 reported at the Conference on Environment Sensitive Mechanical Properties of Materials at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies at Baltimore that thin foils of titanium could be prepared by chemical polishing in a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. The technique is simpler than that since reported by Rice and Orava. As-received annealed titanium (containing 0.8 pct Fe and 30 ppm H) in the form of sheet 0.05 cm thick is placed in the solution and moved up and down. The reaction is violent but suitable foils are obtained very easily and consistently. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. 3. The small precipitates were not identified. Yamane and ueda6 observed many spotlike features which they referred to as small dislocation loops. While their spots may be due to the reaction of the warm foil with the air as suggested by Rice and Orava, the precipitates in Fig. 3 are also found when foils of titanium are prepared by electro-polishing at low temperatures and subsequently examined in the electron microscope without any inter- mediate warming. Furthermore, they are not a surface effect. It is necessary to add that alloys of titanium cannot be so easily thinned by the chemical polishing solution described above since it contaminates the a, phase with hydrogen and produces y hydride. These matters are described at length in a paper7 and their relevance to stress corrosion is considered elsewhere.'-* Author's Reply The authors are grateful to Dr. Scully for bringing to our attention his hitherto unpublished technique for thinning unalloyed titanium, and deeply regret the unintended apparent duplication. The chemical thinning solution (7 parts HNO3 and 3 parts HF, by volume) reported by us is the same as that with which, for some period in the past, we had experienced success in the preparation of foils from single and polycrystalline niobium. Its subsequent effective application to titanium was a logical step, which, clearly independently of Scully, was conceived by Mr. Rice, to whom full credit is due. A few comments are warranted concerning some of the details of the preceding Discussion. It is evident to the discerning reader that the two thinning techniques under consideration are chemically almost identical, and in that sense are equally "simple". The chemical aspect is, of course, the one of primary importance in both communications. Thereafter, the relative simplicity is dictated by the mechanics of the actual thinning operation selected by the individual investigator. Our standard dimpling, or dishing, procedure was chosen with a view toward providing, for the electron transparent areas of the sample, the maximum protection from extraneous deformation during handling. That the long, straight dislocations visible in Scully's electron micrograph of a seemingly recovered structure closely resemble handling dislocations would tend to indicate the merit of our adopted technique. Features similar to those which Scully has attributed to precipitates, without any apparent diffraction contrast confirmation, were not observed in any of our clean foils taken from annealed or deformed specimens. This was admittedly somewhat surprising since the 3700 ppm (nominal) Fe in the A-70 commercial-grade titanium examined should have given rise to TiFe precipitates. Presumably these existed but were un-resolvable. Curiously, Scully's "precipitate1' density is fairly high although the iron content quoted was less than one-fourth of that in our material. One is forced to conclude from the evidence that prior thermal and mechanical treatments are responsible for the two different types of structure observed.

The little village, from which this formation receives its name, is situated on a bluff of the Alabama River, 175 feet above water level. This bluff is a portion of high table land that begins in the western portion of Choctaw and extends through Clarke and Monroe counties. We find points on this ridge more than 100 feet higher than Tuscaloosa, and nearly as high as the Tennessee River at Tuscumbia. Through this the Alabama River cuts its way, exposing a beautiful cross-section of the strata, of which the accompanying sketch may give some idea. The fossils are found about 75 feet below the surface and 100 feet above the level of the river. There are seven distinct strata. 1. The lowest, extending from the water's edge up the bluff 80 feet, is a soft calcareous rock containing about 15 per cent. of carbonate of lime, with occasional specks of mica. This paper deals with the origin, definition and prevention of scabs on semifinished rolled-steel product. Mold coatings, which are considered essential in scab prevention, were found to be effective only in relation to the ingot surface of semikilled and killed steels and not necessary for the rolled product. That is to say, the scabs on ingots caused by having been cast in uncoated molds are eliminated in the soaking and rolling operations, therefore are not present on the rolled product. This fact, which is contrary to the average opinion, was established after extensive and thorough experiments had proved the ordinary conception of the origin of scabs to be incorrect. This subject may be of little or no concern to steel plants producing small ingots for the manufacture of small billets and bars, except as it may be of interest in showing why their surface troubles with scabs do not exist on the product of heats with normal pouring practice. But to the producer of large ingots to be rolled into slabs for large plates used in shipbuilding, it is a very important subject. Definition of a Scab The generally accepted opinion is that the individual scabs present on rolled products (as shown by Fig. I) are considered to have been individual splashes on the ingot surface. This opinion was found to be incorrect. Experiments showed that there were no individual scabs on the product that had appeared as individuals on the ingot surface. The single scabs seen are either pieces of a shell that is present near the bottom of all top-cast ingots, or a veneer that may be present on any part of an ingot improperly poured, as when the stream strikes the mold wall. This definition is based on a detailed study of scabs and their characteristics in which the following have been found true: Location.—On the product of heats poured without trouble, scabs, if present, are always on the product that corresponds to the bottom end of the ingot, and usually occur in clusters. This is true whether molds are coated or not. Shape.—There is no regularity as to shape, size or thickness. It is sometimes possible to separate a few pieces and place them together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, indicating that at one time they had been united as one piece. If individual splashes were the origin of scabs, the foregoing would not be true. Instead, the splashes, which occur throughout the pouring of the ingots, would be present uniformly over the entire product and there would be considerable similarity in the shape and thickness of the scabs. Experimental Work Our experimental work was conducted on 200-ton heats of semikilled plate steel tapped into an oval ladle 15 ft. high. All ingots were top-cast direct into 24 by 54 by 82-in. molds, straight-sided, set on flat stools. Two separate studies were made about one year apart, each study extending
