Laves phases, AB2, are considered as Izerrzisub-stitutional solutions m1hich are defined by a one-for-truo replacement scheme. Atomic-size tnisfit is considered in terms of deviations of the ratio 2V°b/V°A from unity, where v° = atomic volume. A simple elastic model has been used to calculated deviations from "Vegard&apos;s law of atomic vol-umes". Comparison has been made between calculated and observed atomic-volume deviations fov 222 Laves phases. Agreement is generally very good although there ave some few exceptions which appear to be excusable in terms of electronic changes that ore beyond the scope of the present model. We can consider the formation of a binary sub-stitutional solution A-B from an A solvent as one-for-one replacements of A atoms by B atoms. As the atomic-size ratio deviates from unity, the solution becomes thermodynamically less stable and hence more restricted because of atomic-misfit strain energy. In accordance with our previously presented conclusion1 that the atomic volume, v, is in general the most appropriate measure of atomic size, the ideal size ratio for a binary sub-stitutional solution is vg/vA = 1. The Laves phases have been described by Berry and Raynor2 in terms of various stacking sequences of hexagonal layers of B atoms for the three structures MgZn2(C14), MgCu2(C15), and MgNi2(C36). To form the Laves phase of ideal composition AB, we start with complete hexagonal layers of B atoms in the appropriate stacking sequence and we remove, according to an appropriate scheme for each structure, two out of every four B atoms and replace the two removed atoms by one A atom. We thus might expect to find that the ideal size ratio for the Laves phases is 2v/B/ VA= 1. From this point of view, then, we call Laves phases hemi-substitutional solutions since we employ one-for-two replacements. By analogy with substitutional solutions we can expect for Laves phases that as the ratio 2VB/Va deviates from unity the phase occurrence will be more restricted. Laves3 has plotted the distribution of Laves phases as a function of the radius ratio, ?A/rB, and found that, while the distribution extended from 1.05 < rA/B < 1.50, the

Two standard techniques for assessing fracture initiatlon in sheet specimens involve measurements of 1) the applied load of fracture which, via linear fuacture mechanics, is used to find the fracture tough/less SC (or SIC), and 2) the velative displacement of fracture of the opposite free faces of the crack (COD). In the past, the quantitative association between these two parameters has not been determined in detail, owing to the mathematical difficulties of computing. the stress and strain fields in the combined elasto-plastic flow near the crack. Using a numerical technique Irecently developed and applied to a 7075- TO&apos; aluminum plane stress specimern, the two parameters noted have been determined and associated quantitatirely. CONSIDERABLE effort has been expended in selecting a rigorous yet practical manner for predicting fracture. The usual point of departure is the modified Griffith criterion in which the mechanism of energy dissipation is reflected in Sc (or SIC), the parameter of "fracture toughness". Sc. differs from the surface energy used by Griffith in perfectly brittle fracture in that it includes the effect of plastic flow in the vicinity of the crack tip. Because plastic flow alters the stresses and displacements predicted from the usual linear theory of fracture mechanics, and because analysis of the nonlinear stress-strain field has presented great obstacles: only estimates of several pertinent quantities have heretofore been available. Nevertheless, two parameters have often been measured experimentally althougll usually just at the point of fracture. These are the energy release rate, or fracture toughness 9, (or I,), and the crack-opening displacement (COD). Such observations have been used in connection with frarture criteria and have been most helpful in design, although their application requires care with respect to changes in geometrical configuration from that upon which the criteria were based 1,2 Recently, however, a reasonably accurate and comprehensive method for analyzing the elasto-plastic flow has been devised and applied to plane stress specimens having arbitrary octahedral stress-strain curves.3 It thus becomes feasible to compute, albeit numerically, both the fracture toughness and crack opening as functions of the applied tensile loading on a typical specimen geometry. As a result, it is now possible to associate these two parameters quantitatively, and thereby to associate data obtained by one method with data pertaining to the other. ELASTIC ANALYSIS For the case of linear elasticity, it is relatively easy to deduce the connection between various measures of crack deformation. IN reviewing the aerial cameras produced in different countries, it becomes apparent that in nearly all of them an attempt has been made to secure the greatest possible angle of view. This angle, of course, is determined by the objective. The objectives most commonly in use in aerial cameras have a maximum angle of 65º. The objective developed for this new Zeiss camera combines freedom from distortion and brilliant definition, with an angle of 95º. Aerial mapping, it is claimed, has been placed on a different economic basis, and new possibilities presented, particularly in connection with automatic stereoscopic plotting instruments, to which some short references are made. One way of enlarging the angle of view is to couple several instruments with their axes convergent, thereby producing a multilens camera. Typical of cameras of this sort in the United States is the Bagley four-lens camera, which later was developed into the five-lens camera (T3-A) of the U. S. Air Corps. More recently, in order to get away from the unfavorable Maltese cross image field of the five-lens camera, and to obtain a more practical form, two five-lens cameras were combined. By using them in tandem and rotating them by 45º relatively to each other, a ten-lens camera was produced, covering an octagonal ground area, with a total angle of view of 140º. Similar designs have been evolved in other countries. In all of them, however, a number of difficulties have arisen, quite apart from their large weight and high cost. Because of their complex mechanism, numerous shutters and magazines, and the high precision with which these parts must be interadjusted and synchronized, these cameras are far from dependable Moreover, a multilens camera by itself does not yet constitute a complete outfit for producing pictures suitable for photogrammetric survey. Because all the component pictures, except the central one, are obliques, it is always necessary to employ rectifying apparatus which transforms the marginal views to the perspective of the central one. The relative concentration of 1" at grain boundaries in controlled orientation bicrystals has been examined by autoradiographic techniques, and by activity measurements of grain boundary surfaces exposed by preferential ,melting. The autoradio-graphs indicate that thallium is concentrated at grain boundaries in as-grown bicrystals, but not in zcell-annealed bicrystals. They also indicate that the solute concentration and the distribution on as-grown bicrystal surfaces are markedly different than that of the bulk material. The boundary surface measurements are in agreement with the autovadiographic evidence. On the basis of these measurements, as-grown bicrystals containing approximately 100 ppm of Tl, solidified at rates between 5 and 30 cm per hr and with tilt boundaries greater than 10 deg, exhibited grain boundary segregation equivalent to roughly 10 atomic planes of pure solute. Higher solute concentrations (equivalent to 140 atomic planes of pure solute) were obtained in bicrystals solidified slowly (0.6 cm per hr); slightly higher values were obtained in specimens containing a large angle nantilt boundary. Annealing for various times over a range of temperatures eliminated grain boundary segregation within the experimental uncertainty of the results (equivalent to 1 atomic Plane of pure thallium at the boundary). The results for the as-grown bicrystals can be qualitatively accounted for by assuming the presence of a groove on the solid-1iq;id interface, at the grain boundary. SOLUTE segregation at grain boundaries may be considered in two parts, namely, nonequilibrium segregation associated with the solidification process, and equilibrium segregation in fully annealed materials.&apos; There is much indirect evidence for nonequilibrium segregation, based on preferential etching at grain boundaries and the mechanical properties of as-cast alloys. In addition, some direct observations have been reported in which radioactive tracers were used as solute additions and segregation detected at the grain boundaries by autoradiographic techniques. However, there is little detailed quantitative data on solute concentrations related to grain boundaries, particularly for different freezing conditions and grain boundary configurations. Equilibrium segregation at grain boundaries has been considered both theoretically and experimentally. cean&apos; has made an estimate of the maximum equilibrium solute concentration that might be expected at a grain boundary, based on the lattice distortions in the boundary region. He arrived at a concentration which was equivalent t a monatomic layer of pure solute. A similar value, based on thermodynamic arguments, was calculated by Cahn and Hilliard for the segregation of phosphorus in iron. Experimentally, much higher values of solute concentration at grain boundaries have been reported recently by both Inman and iler&apos; for phosphorus in iron, and Ainslie et 1.&apos; for sulfur in iron. They observed concentrations equivalent to as much as 20 to 100 atomic layers of pure solute at the grain boundaries. However, in both cases it was shown that the observed segregation was not due solely to equilibrium segregation at the grain boundary. In the former case, precipitation effectss due to trace impurities in the material were believed to account for the large amount of solute present at the grain boundary. In the latter case it was shown that a high density of dislocations in the boundary region could provide a large number of additional sites for solute atoms, other than at the grain boundary. Thomas and chalmera have reported on the equilibrium segregation of po210 in grain boundaries of Pb-5 pct Bi alloys. Using autoradiographic techniques, they observed a concentration of polonium along the boundary trace on the surface of annealed bicrystal specimens grown from the melt. The concentration only appeared after annealing, and varied with boundary angle, increasing as the boundary angle increased. Their conclusions have been questioned by Ward," who pointed out that the segregation they observed along the boundary trace was much too wide to be compatible with the usual concepts of the thickness of a grain boundary of several lattice spacings. Also, Maroun et al.,l1 with specimens similar to those of Thomas and Chalmers, found that segregation could only be detected on the specimen surface, suggesting that Thomas and Chalmers&apos; results were associated with an oxidation effect of polonium, and not equilibrium segregation. Thomas and Chalmers replied12 that they did observed segregation at the grain boundary in the bulk material and suggested further experiments were necessary to resolve the difference. As part of a larger study to identify factors influencing the practical operating life of wire rope used on large draglines in surface coal mining, field trips to operating surface coal mines were made during late 1975. Wire rope performance information was obtained from personnel at 13 mine sites west of the Appalachians. Seventeen pieces of equipment, utilizing bucket sizes ranging from 30 to 220 cu yd (23 to 168 m), were documented. Draglines at large US surface coal mines can be represented as 120 machines having 60-cu yd (46-m3) buckets, moving 1.8 x 10[9] cu yd (1.4 X 10[9] m3) of overburden during 6650 hours of productive availability per year. Based on the limited field study, the calculated downtime resulting from rope-related causes averages 105.6 hours per year for each typical 60-cu yd (43-m3) dragline. The total loss in production from this source alone is thereby estimated at about 25 X 10[6] cu yd (19 X 10[6] m3) annually.

Lattice parameters were determined for eighteen equiatornic alloys of the CsCl-type structure, ten of which were previously un-reported. It was found that fomation of the CsCl-type structure in binary alloys of the transition elements is largely dependent on position of the elements in the periodic table. The relative size of the two elements was not found to be a controlling factor. A recent paper by Beck, Darby, and Arora1 corre-lates the occurrence of CsC1-type ordered structures with the position of the constituent elements in the periodic table for the first long period. It was also suggested that a definite increase in relative bond strength between unlike atoms occurred when, in binary alloys of iron-group elements, the other component is changed from a chromium-group element, to a vanadium-group element, to titanium. A later paper by Philip and Beck2 noted that the lattice contraction increased in the order CrFe, VFe, and TiFe. It was also noted by Philip and Beck2 that the lattice contractions of CsC1-type alloys decreased in the order: TiFe, TiCo, and TiNi, which is an apparent reversal of the contractions expected from the position in the periodic table. It was suggested that the increasing lattice contraction is an indication of increased stability, i.e., greater A-Bbond strength. The present investigation was carried out to determine whether the relation of the position in the periodic table to the formation of the CsC1-type structure was also correct for alloys involving the second and third long-period elements. A systematic search was made for CsC1-type structures among equiatomic alloys and for those found, the lattice contraction was determined. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The elements Y, Gd, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, and Cb are designated the A group and the elements Mn, Re, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, and Au are designated the B group. Equiatomic alloys were prepared for 57 AB combinations. The alloys were arc melted in a multicrucible furnace3 in buttons ranging from 5 to 20 g. Chemical analyses were not made, as the charge weights agreed closely with those of the buttons after melting. The alloy buttons were homogenized at 800° to 900°C. Metal log raphic and X-ray specimens were prepared and heat treated at temperatures from 600° to 1200°C. Specimens for X-ray diffraction were usually ground to a powder in an agate mortar; however, needle-shaped solid specimens were used when the alloy was sufficiently ductile to permit their preparation. Diffraction patterns were taken with a Straumanistype Debye-Scherrer camera using filtered Cu or Co radiation. The lattice parameters were obtained in A by plotting the calculated a0 values against the cos29/sin 0 + cos2?/? function and extrapolating linearly to ?= 900. Metallographic control specimens were polished on cloth wheels with diamond paste and etched with various phosphoric and nitric acid reagents. RESULTS The eighteen equiatomic alloys listed in Table I gave evidence of a cubic structure with two atoms in the unit cell, although two of these cubic structures exist only at elevated temperatures and transform to a tetragonal structure on quenching. Nine of these eighteen alloys gave diffraction patterns with super-lattice lines showing that the structure is of the CsC1-type. The lack of superlattice lines in patterns of the other nine alloys may be attributed to the small difference in atomic scattering power of the components. Metallographic study indicates the occurrence of nine narrow single-phase fields at the AB composition. Any or all of these nine may also have a CsC1-type structure. The VFe alloy was found to have a CsCl-type structure by Philip and Beck2 through the use of CrKa radiation (for which the scattering factor of V is anomalously low), whereas the Cu radiation used

VARIOUS&apos;-3 reports on the electroslag remelting process refer to the "thin skin of slag" existing around the slag pool and the solidifying ingot, but none considers the various mechanisms by which this layer forms and thus influences the surface quality of the ingot. A test is described in which the wellubility of porous rock is measured as a function of the displacement properties of the rock-water-oil system. Four displacemet operations are carried out: (I) sponlaneous displaceti?ent of water by oil, (2) forced displacement of water by oil oil in the same system using a centrifuging procetllrre, (3) spontaneous displacement of oil by water. and (4) forced displacment of oil by water. Ratios of the spontaneous displacement volumes to the total displucenlent volumes are used as wettability indicates. INTRODUCTTON Most investigators who have reported on the wettahility of porous rock have described such rock as prcferentially water-wet or preferentially oil-wet. In some cases a third classification, neutral wettability. has been used. The efficiency of water floods in each of these wettability groups has been described in numerous publications. Several methods for characterizing porous rock wet tability more precisely have been reported,&apos; " but it appears that because of one weakness or another. none of these has been generally accepted. Early in our studies in this field, it was found that the displacement efficiency of oil by water in a particular porous rock having a strong preference for water was quite different from that in a similar rock having only a moderate preference for water. Thus, there appeared to be a need for a practical, reasonably precise wet tability test. one which could classify porous rocks into 10 to 20 different groups rather than the two or three broad groups listed above. The test developed to meet this need is described in this paper. Also, changes in wettability, as indicated hy this test, resulting from various core handling procedures are discussed. Finally, data showing the corrclation of wettability with waterflood oil recovery for two different types of cores are presented and discussed. Some confusion has resulted from the failure of certain writers to define clearly some of the wettability terms they have used. Accordingly, the following commcnts concerning definitions are offered. The wc t ta-hility of a solid surface is the relative preference of that surface to be covered by one of the fluids under consideration. It is felt that this is the generally accepted definition. The fluids being considered must bc specified (or understood) before the term wettability has any significance. In the work reported here these fluids are water (3 per cent brine) and oil (kerosene). The term preferential wettability is sometimes used, but we think that the word preferential is redundant here and should not be used. Tn line with the definitions of Jennings&apos;, a preferentially oil-wet solid surface is regarded as a surface which will show an oil advancing contact angle less than 90" (measured through the oil) in the water-oil-solid system. Oil will spontaneously displace water, if both are at the same pressure, from such a surface. A preferentially water-wet surface is analogous. This is consistent with the wettability definition above. As Jennings has said, frequently the term oil-wet is used to mean the same thing as preferentially oil-wet. However, oil-wet also has been used occasionally referring to an oil-covered surface when the availability of water was limited. To avoid confusion from this source, we do not use the terms oil-wet and water-wet. DESCRIPTION OF WETTABTLITY TEST The following points were considered desirable in a wettability test for our purpose. 1. The test should be a displacement test resembling

R. H. SWEETSER, Columbus, Ohio.-My experience with oxygen in the blast is limited to the use of one tank of oxygen in melting out a chilled anthracite furnace. The oxygen was introduced through the peephole of the tuyeres and opened them in a very short time. We could see that an intense heat was generated just as soon as the oxygen struck the fuel. I agree with the committee in respect to many. of the things that will probably happen in the iron blast furnace, particularly as to the speeding up of the operation. There will undoubtedly be changes in the shape of the blast furnace, and if I were designing one today I should hesitate about the form to give it. Mr. Kirby suggested that the proper shape might be rectangular. Some of the men of the American Rolling Mill Co. have reached the same conclusion, as a result of Royster and Joseph finding that the combustion zone in the front of the tuyeres extended into the furnace less than 40 in. If this is correct, we might build the furnace with an elongated rectangu-ular hearth having the shorter dimension a little over 80 in. and secure. a very intense temperature in the hearth. The committee&apos;s report said, "With more oxygen available in the blast, the smelting ability of the furnace will be increased beyond the&apos; speed of the preparing zone in the shaft." This can be controlled by providing ample facilities for getting stock into the furnace, and this will be one of the biggest changes in blast-furnace construction. The question has been raised as to finding suitable refractories to withstand the increase of hearth temperature. If the furnace can be kept full, the descending column of cold material will probably take care of the increased heat from more rapid combustion of the coke. At the Cleveland meeting, in 1912, the iron blast-furnace men listened with great interest to a paper on copper slags; from Mr. Kirby&apos;s paper, it looks as though they might again have to go to the copper men, for many of the problems of the iron blast furnace of the. future that uses oxygen may be worked out on lines of the copper blast furnace.

During the past few years the author has had an opportunity to examine a number of base-metal mines in the western United States, France and Spain. Nearly all of these mines produced some silver, and laboratory studies of the relationship between the silver and the various base-metal minerals in the ore have given some interesting and, it is to be hoped, enlightening facts. As this work was undertaken primarily to ascertain the amount of silver chemically associated with, not controlled by, the various base-metal minerals, the laborious and not always satisfactory method of picking out "pure" samples of each mineral from many localities was employed. However, the results obtained have justified the time that has been spent. Not only have the conclusions arrived at in different mining areas been in accordance with one another but in many instances they have afforded scientific support or explanations for much of the knowledge that operators in the various camps have acquired by practical experience. Although many of the conclusions are not new, many of the facts are, and the results, if they do nothing else, serve to confirm the findings of some of the other workers in this field, particularly the work of Nissen and Hoyt1 and of F. N. Guild2. Dr. S. G. Lasky3 has suggested a novel method for determining from a series of algebraic equations the amount of silver controlled by each of the base-metal minerals but I doubt very much whether his method can be justified, chiefly because there appear to be more variables to be considered than the few that appear in his equations. X,, of the solute in the rock salt-type a phase and the corresponding eutectic temperatures, T,, are: (PbTe)l-x(CdTe)x: X,- 0.2, T, =866°C; (PbTe),-,(lnTe),: X, - 0.35, T, = 646"C; (SnTe),-,(CdTe),:X,- 0.11, T, = 784 "C; (SnTe),-,(lnTe),: X,-0.53, T, = 630°C. The lattice parameters of the a phase decrease linearly with X, even in (PbTe),-,(CdTe),, where a, (CdTe) = 6.481A > %(PbTe) = 6.459A. This is taken as proof that the cadmium atom enters an octahedral interstice of the tellurium atom sublattice; i.e., the formation of the a phase entails the direct replacement of lead by cadmium. The a, us X curve extrapolates to 6.16A at X = 1, in agreement with the value predicted for an ionic crystal of CdTe; it is also consistent with the reported lattice parameter It is well-established that the compositions of intrinsic semiconducting and semimetallic compounds conform to normal valence rules.1"5 The apparent exceptions can be explained by taking account of anion-anion covalences, as in CdSb, or of multiple cation valences, as in In Te.&apos;This empirical generalization is the basis of the chemical approach to semiconductors2 by which the properties of an intrinsic semiconductor are rationalized in terms of the ionic-covalent bonds necessary to saturate the valence-electron complement of the anion sublattice. A fundamental shortcoming of this approach is its disregard of long-range crystal interactions. It cannot, accordingly, deal with the phenomenon of charge conduction except through the use of ad hoc postulates. As an example, a crystal of CdTe would, in the valence-bond picture: be described in terms of electron pairs, each with the same discrete energy, localized between every cadmium and tellurium atom. This is, of course, contrary to the Pauli of the high-pressure rock-salt form of CdTe, corrected for decompression from 36 kbar. The free energy of formation of the a phase of pure CdTe at room temperature is calculated from the phase diagram to be +10 kcal per g-atom, in accmd with the value calculated from the transformation pressure. The standard enthalpy is +13 kcal per g-atom, and the standard entropy is +9 eu. The latter value implies the formation of extra classical particles, such as vacancies, interstitials, or nondegenerate charge carriers, but these alternatives are not consistent with the semiconducting properties and the densities of the a phase. The extrapolated values of the lattice parameters of (PbTe),-,(lnTe), and Spectively, for the rock salt-type modification of InTe. The corresponding interatomic separation is intermediate between monovalent and trivalent indium. The qualitative implications of the results are considered from the viewpoints of both valence-band theory and energy-band theory. principle, and is corrected by methods of molecular-orbital theory in which bonds are replaced by bands of molecular orbitals whose energies, E, depend upon a crystal-momentum vector, k.7 Each band is derived from a linear combination of atomic orbitals with two electrons required to saturate each molecular orbital in the band. In a crystal of N atoms containing z atoms in its primitive unit cell, there are 2 N/z states per band which lie in a region of k space bound by the Brillouin zone. In an intrinsic semiconductor, the bands can be grouped into valence bands which are normally filled and conduction bands which are normally empty. If the highest valence band and the lowest conduction band overlap anywhere within the Brillouin zone, the material is rendered semimetallic. The quantity defines the effective mass, m*, of an electron in a conduction band (or of a hole, i.e., an electron deficiency, in the valence band) and leads directly to the concept of charge mobility through the relation \x = et/m*, where e is the electron charge and t is the lattice relaxation time.

OWING to the large area included in the Yellow Pine mining district, and the-varied nature of its mineral deposits, a detailed geological description of the district could be covered only in an extensive monograph. This paper is intended as a description of the most prominent geologic features only with special reference to those of economic importance. The first mention of the district was in 1903 by J. E. Spurr,1 who briefly describes the structural geology of the Spring Mountain range. In 1906, H. F. Bain2 briefly described the Potosi mine. James J. Hill,3 of the United States Geological Survey, visited the district for a brief period in 1912, the result of which is an excellent reconnaissance report, covering the district in some detail but necessarily with brevity. Since that time, articles covering special features of the district have appeared in the technical press, including some by the writer, and a notable description of the Boss mine, by Adolph Knopf,4 appeared in 1915. Development of the district during the past few years has progressed so rapidly and with so many notable discoveries, particularly with reference to the rare metals, that a further description at this time may prove of interest. The writer&apos;s acquaintance with the district is based on 7 years&apos; continuous residence in the vicinity, beginning with the spring of 1910.

ThiS paper .summarizes the development and perform. ance of the Coldwater Oil field, Isabella County, Mich. Production is obtained at a depth of 3750 ft from a dolomite reservoir, which is probably both Rogers City and Dundee. There appears to be no persistent barrier to vertical fluid movement between the Rogers City and Dundee, and both formations are believed to have a common original oil-water contact. No we1ls are open to production at the level of the Dundee. The discovery of the field in 1944 was followed by the drilling of 81 producing wells and nine dry holes. By the end of 1952, the field had produced 12,763,000 bbl of oil, at which time 69 active wells were producing 3600 B/D oil and 21,000 B/D water. The reservoir has an effective natural water drive, and bottom-hole pressure has declined 75 psi from an original pressure of 1453 psi. Oil is undersaturated at reservoir conditions with a solution GOR of 512 cu ft/bbl and a saturation pressure of 1190 psi. INTRODUCTION Although the Coldwater Field is now in its ninth year of production, it ranks seventh in cumulative recovery, and second in current daily oil production in the State. Following complete development of the field in 1946, it has consistently contributed approximately 11 per cent of Michigan&apos;s daily production. Coldwater appears to have a greater pay thickness than most fields producing from the Rogers City forma- tion in the west central part of the Michigan basin. Except as influenced by the extent of closure and the thickness of the oil column, reservoir performance is believed to be representative of Rogers City fields in this part of the basin. For this reason, it is felt that the following presentation of factual data for the field will be of general interest. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT Discovery of the Coldwater field during Aug., 1944, followed favorable subsurface geological correlations and core tests drilled to a shallow stratigraphic marker horizon. The field is located in the west central part of the Michigan Basin in Coldwater Township (T16N-R6W), Isabella County. It is 60 miles west-northwest of Bay City, and near the geographic center of the southern peninsula of Michigan. The discovery well flowed 200 bbl of oil the first 24 hours from the Rogers City dolomite at a depth of approximately 3750 ft. Field production is principally from the Rogers City with a minor amount assumed to come from the underlying Dundee dolomite, although none of the wells are open to production at the level of the Dundee. Both the Rogers City and Dundee formations belong to the Devonian system (See Geologic Column-Fig. I.) In addition to Rogers City-Dundee oil production, sweet gas is produced from the Michigan Stray sand of the Mississippian system at a depth of 1400 ft. The gas reservoir has approximately the same areal extent as the underlying oil reservoir. Although gas production is an important feature of the Coldwater field, this report is concerned only with the oil reservoir. The productive area is approximately 3200 acres. The pool is developed on a 40 acre spacing pattern with wells drilled in the center of the north half of 40 acre tracts, except for a few off-pattern wells drilled along

IN submitting an additional contribution to the discussion on ore-deposits in the recent volumes of the Transactions, it is my desire to adhere closely to matters of material importance as affecting the actual processes. Judging from the discussion by Professor Van Hise, and from one or two reviews or other articles by associates of his in geological work, the impression seems to prevail that, in so far as my paper* referred to ,his masterly essay,†I was guilty of misconceptions regarding both the part attributed by him in it to the igneous rocks and the ubiquitous presence of the ground-water. I should regret extremely to be wanting in these particulars or to have misunderstood one for whose great services in this and other branches of geology no one has a higher esteem than myself. I have, however, in the most careful way, and with these points in mind, read his essay again, anti, taking it as a whole, I cannot gain any different impression of relative magnitudes than the one first received. The importance of the igneous phenomena and the restrictive influence of the processes described by " cementation " in their effect upon the ground-water, as set forth in Professor Van Hise&apos;s " Discussion " (Trans., xxxi., 292), impress me as being in very marked contrast with the same things in his first essay. If the point seems to anyone of sufficient importance, it can easily be decided by reading the originals. My paper was the result of some years of observation, reading and reflection, and was meant to be an independent contribution, controversial only in some subordinate particulars. In depicting the drama of the deposition of ores, I cannot but feel that Professor Van Rise assigned to the chorus and the scene-shifters some characters which, it seems to me, should

THE quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The varia-tion in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the British Iron and Steel Institute.1 From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots.

HISTORY. THE use of iron for the precipitation of copper was known at least as early as the fifteenth century. Both Paracelsus and Basil Valentine refer to it in their writings, as early as 1500 A. D. It was used in Peru for this purpose prior to 1637, and at Rio Tinto, Spain, as early as the sixteenth century. The statement has been made repeatedly that in the early history of the mining industry at Butte, the practicability of this method of recovering copper from solution was overlooked, and that enormous quantities of copper-bearing water were allowed to go to waste, the copper in which might easily have been recovered at small cost; and .that this oversight on the part of the mine operators was due to ignorance of this method of recovering copper. As a matter of fact, very little copper-bearing mineral was encountered in the mines of Butte until a depth of 400 or 500 ft. bad been reached, and in many cases much greater depths were necessary to reach the copper-bearing zone. The water encountered in the upper levels (although in most cases quite highly mineralized) contained little or no copper, and it was only after considerable areas of copper-bearing ore&apos; had been uncovered and developed that copper sulphate began to appear in the mine water in any considerable quantity. In fact, the first water that was observed to contain copper carried it in such small amounts as to be of little or no importance. It was only after years of underground work had opened extensive areas of stopes, drifts, and other underground workings, these being subsequently filled with waste, nearly all of which contained small copper values, which became oxidized by exposure to the air and were acted upon by the slowly percolating mineral water, that the recovery of copper from mine water became commercially important.

EFFORTS at smoke abatement date back to the year 1273 in England when a law was passed prohibiting the use of "sea cole." The law was not enforced, so King Edward I, 33 years later, appointed a commission "to enquire of all such who burnt sea cole in the city or parts adjoining, and to punish them for first offense with great fines and ransomes, and for the second offense to demolish their furnaces." Many other commissions have since been named to investigate the smoke problem in England, but it still persists in many British cities. In the United States the movement to abate the smoke nuisance started in certain Middle Western cities, and has made considerable progress. Until recently, the coal-producing industry co-operated little in smoke¬abatement programs, taking the attitude that smoke elimination is the dealer&apos;s or user&apos;s responsibility; and the dealers, in turn placed the responsibility entirely on the user.
