Measurements of current efficiency on iron-silicate slags in iron crucibles showed that conduction is about 10 pct ionic in slags with less than 10 pct silica and about 90 pct ionic in slags with more than 34 pct silica, increasing linearly in the intermediate range. The balance of the conduction is electronic in character. Silicate ions are discharged at the anode with the evolution of gaseous oxygen. Transport experiments show that the ionic current is carried almost entirely by ferrous ions, which may be assigned a transport number of one. THERE has been increased evidence in recent years that the constitution of liquid-oxide systems (slags) is ionic.1-3 The principal studies designed to establish the structure of liquid slags have been by electrochemical methods', " and conductivity measurements1,6,7 which also have indicated the presence of semiconduction in several silicate systems1,4-0 and in pure iron oxide.' It is well known that many slag-forming metallic oxides have an ionic lattice type in the solid state, and their properties are determined to a large extent by the lattice defects and ion sizes. As Richardson8 as pointed out, the detailed models of liquid slags cannot be found on thermodynamic data only but "must rest on a proper foundation of compatible structural and thermodynamic knowledge, combined by statistical mechanics." A careful thermodynamic study of the iron-silicate slags has been carried out by Schuhmann with Ensio9 and with Michal.10 They obtained experimental data relating equilibrium CO2: CO ratios to slag composition and made thermodynamic calculations of the activities of FeO and SiO, and of the partial molal heats of solution of FeO and SiO2 in the slags. It was found that the activity-composition relationships deviate considerably from those to be expected from an ideal binary solution of FeO and SiO2. However, the partial molal heat of solution of FeO into the slags was estimated to be zero. Their experimental results were correlated with the constitution diagram for FeO-SiO2 of Bowen and Schairer,11 with the results of Darken and Gurry" on the Fe-O system, and with the work of Darken"' on the Fe-Si-O system. All these studies were found to be consistent with one another. The variation of the mechanism of conduction with composition in the liquid iron-oxide-silica system in the range from pure iron oxide to silica saturation (42 pct SiO2) in iron crucibles was reported in a preliminary note." The current efficiency, or conformance to Faraday's law, showed some ionic conductance at all compositions, the proportion increasing with the concentration of silica. The current-efficiency experiments since have been extended. Furthermore, transport-number measurements have been completed in silica-saturated iron silicates to determine the nature of the conducting ions. Experimental Current Efficiency in Liquid Iron Oxide and Iron Silicates using Iron Anodes: This study was carried out by passing direct current through slags in the range from pure iron oxide to iron oxide saturated with silica (42 pct silica), using pure iron rods as anodes and the iron container as the cathode. A copper coulometer was included in the circuit to indicate the quantity of current passed during electrolysis. Assuming that the cation involved is Fe-+, the theoretical quantity of iron lost from the anode according to Faraday's law may be calculated and when compared with the actual loss observed, gives an indication of the extent to which Faraday's law has been obeyed. It also gives an indication of the presence and extent of ionic conduction in the melt. Preparation of the Slags: About 100 g of chemically pure Fe,O, powder is placed in an iron pot which is heated by induction until the contents liquefy. In this way, FeO is produced according to the reaction Fe2O3 + Fe = 3 FeO. More Fe2O3 or SiO, powder is added and, when a sufficient quantity of molten slag is obtained, the induction unit is turned off, the pot withdrawn, and the molten slag poured on to an iron plate. Homogenization and Electrolysis of the Slag: Apparatus—After considerable development, the setup illustrated in Fig. 1 proved to be quite satisfactory. A is an Armco iron cylinder, 1 in. ID and 1/8 in. wall, consisting of three sections placed one on top of the other. The bottom section is a pot about 5 in. long with a small hole drilled in its bottom to allow withdrawal of gases during evacuation of the apparatus. The middle section is 6 in. long and consists of a pot which serves as the slag container, while the top section is a hollow-cylinder continuation of the slag-container pot. The height of this latter section is about 5 in., giving an overall length of approximately 16 in. There are two main sources of the water that floods productive oil or gas sands. The water may rise from the lower depths of the producing stratum, or it may come from beds above or below the oil-bearing formation. Usually the recovery of oil is decreased by water entering the oil sands, and most oil-field waters, especially those of deep wells, tend to foster the formation of an emulsion, which is expensive to treat. This paper deals with a method of distinguishing between waters that encroach upon oil-bearing beds from sources in the same stratum and waters that reach the oil sands from horizons above. In order to remedy effectually water difficulties in oil and gas wells, it is absolutely necessary to determine the source of the invading water. Sometimes evidence such as the structural relations between the strata penetrated by deighboring wells and those found in the well under investigation is not adequate; also, data from drill logs and well records, from mechanical tests made on the wells by plugs, testers, drilling tools, etc., and from tests by chemical indicators such as eosin and Venetian red, may be unsatisfactory, for such data may fail to locate the source of the infiltrating waters. As a resort in such cases, the application of chemical analyses, that is, the comparison of an analysis of the water in question with that of typical waters from the various water horizons in that particular district, has in certain instances proved of value. This method has been used to advantage in the Westside Coalinga field of California, where the source of water may be fairly definitely determined , from its composition. The chief conclusions concerning the chemistry of the oil-field waters in California by G. S. Rogers1 are: "Oil-field water is not necessarily salty, as is generally believed, and may not be even slightly salty to the taste. The degree of concentration of chloride in such water is governed primarily by local conditions and is not affected by the position of the water in relation to oil. Like most other operations concerned in ore dressing, or in the treatment of nonmetallic minerals, the mathematical relationships of rock breaking are still obscure, and much disputed. If some basic formula exists, comparable for instance to E = RI in electricity, it has not yet been placed in, common use. The absence of such a comprehensive mathematical background undoubtedly is the cause of many inefficient designs and installations, as well as of much poorly oriented experimental work. On the other hand, the mathematical immaturity of the process constitutes an opportunity for a real contribution on the part of those who enjoy mental pioneering. Some of the statements made in any such exploratory work may be little more than opinions, and it is to be expected that some will later be proved untrue; but such an evolutionary development is necessary if we are ever to arrive at the fundamental laws, the discovery of which can change the empirical art into a mathematically exact science. The most significant principle of comminution that we possess is probably Rittinger's law, which states that the work done in crushing or grinding is proportional to the area of the new surface produced. There is an alternative theory, known as Kick's law, which formerly was preferred to Rittinger's but which now is rather discredited. According to Kick, the work done in comminution is proportional to the volume, or weight, of the pieces broken, or to the cube of their diameters, while according to Rittinger it is proportional to the square of the diameters. Careful determinations of size distribution below the limit of sieve sizes1 indicate strongly that under ordinary grinding conditions the amount of new surface area produced is directly proportional to the net power input. Changes in the size ratio between the balls and the particles cause important differences in the proportion of the product that passes a given mesh size, but do not affect the total amount of new surface area; they merely change the distribution of the surface among mesh sizes. The principle of constant surface area is the logical result of Rittinger's law, and it may well have an important bearing on the comminution theories of the future. Advances in instrumentation now make it possible to measure accurately flaw of such difficult-to-mea-sure liquids as mining slurries. A mass flowmeter, which introduces no restrictions in the line, will measure the mass flow of slurry equal to the volume flow times the mms/unit volume. In the mass flowmeter system a volume flow measurement is electrically multiplied by a density measurement in order to give mass flow. Fig. 1 shows a typical mass flow measuring system. The volume flow is measured by a magnetic flowmeter and the density is measured by a gamma gauge cell, neither of which have any restrictions in the line. Consequently, there is no clogging and no more loss of head than there would be in a similm length of standard pipe. None of the parts extend into the flowing stream and there are no moving parts in the measuring elements. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF THE VOLUME FLOW TRANSMITTER The magnetic flowmeter, which is used for the volume measurement, operates on the principle of a generator (Fig. 2). This principle states that when a moving conductor cuts lines of force in a magnetic field, a voltage is induced in it. Moreover, if the dimensions of the conductor remain constant, then the induced voltage is directly proportional to the velocity of the conductor. Since the voltage is strictly a function of flow velocity, the transmitter output can in no way be influenced by such factors as temperature, viscosity, turbulence, or conductivity. The linear output is detected by flush mounted electrodes (as shown) and transmitted to a potentiometer flow receiver. Magnetic Meter Construction: The metering tube is constructed of nonmagnetic stainless steel. (See Fig. 3.) To prevent shortcircuiting of the generated voltage, the tubes are lined with a suitable liner, depending upon the corrosive, erosive or other properties of the liquid or slurry to be measured. A uniform magnetic field is produced by two saddle-shaped coils of insulated copper wire. A laminated iron core focuses the magnetic field at a 90' angle to the flowing liquid. The voltage generated by a flow of liquid through the magnetic field is detected by two point electrodes mounted flush with the inner wall of the metering tube, 180' apart. Electrodes are made of Type-316 stainless steel or other material suitable to the application . Volume Flowmeter Operation: The millivolt output of the metering transmitter is transmitted to a potentiometer-type receiver (Fig. 4). The self-balancing, self-standardizing receiver has a drive unit for circuit rebalancing. The measurement change imposes an unbalanced input on the twin windings of the drive unit. The resulting unequal pull on a segmental rotor provides the motion which drives a pen, while simultaneously and steplessly repositioning a rebalancing element. Changes in conductivity have no effect on the accuracy of the measurement or the calibration of the instrument. The minimum conductivity values are determined by the length of the transmission cable and the size of the transmitter. They can be as low as five micro mhos, since there is such a small load on the electrodes. Because the meter electrically averages all of the incremental velocities in an irregular flow profile, it is ideally suited for turbulent flow and suspended solids. DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone, quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide, The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over-burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and trans-ported to the dump in quarry cars, Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi-circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft, above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river: As quarrying pro-gressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp,, 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft, above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting hays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage.

The mechanical properties of Ti-C and Ti-C-0 alloys can be altered by heat treatments to dissolve or reject carbon from solid solutions. The maximum strength is obtained by annealing just below the peritectoid temperature. Quenching from the ß-carbide field results in softening. Impact behavior is influenced by the extent of solution of interstitials CARBON is not as important in titanium alloys as it was in earlier years when graphite induction melting was more prevalent. With induction melting, carbon pickup is about 0.5 to 0.8 pct. Cold-mold arc melting with graphite electrodes, which is among the more current methods, results in carbon pickup of 0.1 to 0.2 pct. The titanium-sponge melting stock itself contains about 0.02 to 0.07 pct C, picked up from the magnesium used in the reduction process. Thus, carbon is still one of the more important contaminants in titanium and needs careful study and evaluation in order to understand titanium and titanium alloys. Moreover, it is equally proper to consider carbon as an alloying addition because, in controlled amounts in titanium alloys, it may serve a most useful function. This is particularly the case where the ultimate in toughness is not required. The addition of carbon to titanium results in a peritectoid-type system as illustrated in Fig. 1. The solubility of carbon is seen to be higher in the a phase than in the ß phase in the temperature range of interest. Below the peritectoid temperature, the solubility of carbon in a titanium decreases with decreasing temperature. This type of system permits many microstructural and heat-treatment variations which may influence the properties of the alloys. The study of how the microstructure variations affect mechanical properties is described in this paper. Experimental Procedures The experimental techniques and testing methods used in this work were the same as those described in detail in a previous paper.' No further descriptions will be given except where changes have been made. High purity iodide titanium, produced by the New Jersey Zinc Co., was used in all of the alloys. Carbon additions were made using high purity spectro-graphic carbon electrodes in order to obtain the highest purity carbon available. The alloys were prepared by double arc melting to reduce the possibility of segregation. The alloys were forged at 875°C to ¾ in. round, descaled, vacuum annealed for 5 hr at 900°C to remove the residual hydrogen, and swaged to ¼ in. round at 750°C. All heat treatments were made on material in this initial condition. Two of the early Ti-C ingots were found to have been contaminated in melting. Vacuum-fusion analyses showed that the two contaminated alloys had picked up oxygen, so the test results on these two alloys permitted an evaluation of ternary Ti-C-0 alloys. A list of the alloys and their compositions are given in Table I. Properties of Ti-C Alloys In a peritectoid-type system, such as the Ti-C system, the chief microstructural variable which influences the properties is solid-solution strengthening. For a given composition, it is possible to control the disposition of carbon, either in solid solution or as the compound Tic, by suitable heat treatments. When in solid solution, the carbon present in the alloy makes a definite contribution to the strength of the alloy. However, when present as Tic, it has very little effect on the strength. Other microstructural variables considered in this investigation were transformation structures and grain size. As discussed in subsequent sections, these variables have only a minor effect on properties as compared to the solid-solution effect. Solid-Solution Strengthening: The principal strengthening mechanism for Ti-C alloys has been found to be solid-solution strengthening. Carbon in interstitial solid solution strengthens titanium, but has very little strengthening effect if present as the compound. Since carbon has a higher solubility in

Analytical expressions are derived from empirical data relating the basic physical device parameters to the radiation dose. To put in perspective and justify the approach taken, the overall problem and methods of attempted solution of radiation damage to transistors in a missile or satellite environment is briefly examined. The main emphasis is on a new criteria for neutron radiation hardness and the device design implications resulting from using this criteria. Contrary to other derived criteria, the derived bipolar hardness relation depends mainly on the initial lifetime rather than the base transit time. It is shown, that contrary to previously accepted beliefs, the inherent attainable radiation tolerance of JFET's is at least a factor of ten greater than the radiation tolerance ofbipolars. Experimental results on JFET's designed for maximum neutron radiation tolerance are presented. The accuracy, utility, and range of possible validity of various published lifetime and carrier removal damage constants are discussed. It is well known that transistors are subject to damage due to radiation at much lower radiation levels than those which would cause structural damage to a missile or satellite. The three principal categories of radiation damage to transistors are displacement, ionization, and thermomechanical. The main cause of displacement damage is fast neutrons, and the main effects which permanently degrade transistor operation are minority carrier lifetime reduction and carrier removal. A second-order effect is mobility reduction. The main cause of ionization damage is gamma radiation which results in permanent effects due to charge build-up in the oxide and transient effects due to photo-current generation. The transient effects are usually handled by using circumvention techniques in the electronics system. The extent of the transistor degradation due to displacement and ionization damage depends strongly on the transistor type, whereas the extent of thermomechanical damage does not depend on the transistor type, but depends mainly on packaging and metallization which are common to all transistor types. The standard transistor types are categorized in Fig. 1 and typical cross-sections are shown in Fig. 2. The original reason for the designation of the two classes of transistors was that the unipolar operation depends on only one carrier (majority) and the bipolar operation depends on both minority and majority car- riers. The bipolar is then seriously degraded by minority carrier lifetime reduction, whereas the unipolar or field effect transistor is not. One of the two principle classes of field effect transistors, the junction field effect transistor (JFET), depends strongly on carrier removal. However, the insulated gate (MIS) is little affected by either carrier removal or lifetime changes, but is virtually eliminated as a radiation resistant device because of permanent charge build-up in the insulator caused by ionizing radiation. The bipolar and JFET suffer only minor effects due to charge build-up in the oxide passivation when compared1 to the MOS. This is because the active region of the MOS is adjacent to or part of the oxide layer. It is then the bipolar and JFET which are potentially resistant to permanent radiation damage. THE manufacture of optical glass is a new industry in this country. In 1914, after the war started, the supply of optical glass from Europe was cut off, but as there was a fairly large stock of glass on hand, it was not until the end of 1915 that the optical instrument makers made serious efforts to produce their own glass. These early attempts were generally made by practical glass men and, due primarily to the fact that very little scientific help was used, the first attempts were unsuccessful. It was not until the whole problem was attacked by technically trained men who used advanced methods of research that good results were obtained. These researches proved that the accurate control of the temperature was a most important factor in the manufacture of optical glass. The early glass maker judged temperatures with his eyes; later, Seger cones were introduced into the furnace at various stages of the melt. Then radiation, indicating and recording pyrometers with rare-metal thermocouples were introduced. Now, in addition to these, an optical pyrometer every hour or so is sighted right into the pot and on the molten glass. Figs. 1 and 2 show how pyrometers are used to control the melt. InFig. 2, Y is the clay pot in which the batch is melted to glass within the furnace X. The rare-metal thermocouple S, protected by a clay tube, extends through the wall and about 4 in. into the furnace. This couple is connected to an indicator T and a recorder U so that a complete record of the furnace temperatures is obtained. The section of the curve ABCD, Fig. 1, shows how gradually and carefully the clay pot must be heated to get rid of moisture AB and during the calcining at CD. The stem of an expansion pyrometer R is extended through a hole in the door Z of the furnace and into the pot in order to more closely follow the temperatures of the clay pot itself during the burning process, that is from A to D. After the pot is calcined, the temperature can be rapidly raised to E (about 1430° C.); from E to F this temperature is much higher

A simple on-stream particle-size analysis method is presented that leads to a bulk-property single-channel device; although the concept can be extended to multi-channel sizing information. The method is based on continuously measuring and comparing the percent solids in the sample stream and in an internal-reference stream containing only undersize particles. A semipermeable hydraulic system is used such that the particle mass concentration in the internal stream can vary, and is always proportional to the undersize particle mass concentration in the sample stream.

In a previous paper,l a method was suggested for determining the depth to a bed in the simple case of a uniform overlying layer of constant thickness. The main purpose of the present paper is to show how a slight modification of that method has been used to interpret specific data obtained in the upper peninsula of Michigan by the staff of the Depart- ment of Mathematics and Physics of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. The method of Tagg2 has also been used on the same data, thus furnishing a comparison of the two methods, as well as a method of using the two methods jointly. The method of measuring the apparent resistivity is that suggested by Wenner,3 and illustrated in Fig. 1. A current I enters the earth at the positive pole C and leaves it at the negative pole D. The potential V of the high electrode A, with respect to the low electrode B is measured by suitable means. The development of a process for the treatment of telluride concentrates at Emperor Gold Mining Co. Vatukoula, is discussed. The concentrate is produced by flotation in cyanide solution immediately after milling. Two stages of cleaning are employed and a high-grade concentrate is produced usually containing more than 50% of the precious metal. The process developed in the first instance involved batch roasting followed by batch leaching in strong cyanide solution, recovering gold and silver only. The procedure currently employed is chemical oxidation of the tellurides using hypochlorite as the oxidant in a basic solution of a caustic soda and sodium carbonate. After oxidation the gold and silver are recovered by cyanidation. The residue is then leached with sodium sulfide and elemental tellurium precipitated with sodium sulfite.

Increasing emphasis is being placed on the necessity for obtaining reasonably accurate estimates of the physical properties of reservoir fluids well in advance of more accurate laboratory data. One such factor is the isothermal coefficient of expansion of an undersaturated hydrocarbon liquid which may be contained in a particular reservoir. This coefficient, or liquid "compressibility", has often been assumed to be relatively insensitive and nearly constant. Although this assumption may be nearly correct in the case of high specific gravity liquids, it cannot apply in the case of medium to low specific gravity liquids. Any treatment of the nature of liquid compressibilities must give consideration to the variable nature of the isothermal expansion coefficient and the fact that it can be both pressure sensitive and temperature sensitive. The isothermal coefficient of expansion, or compressibility, of a substance is defined as -c = 1/V (?V/?p)T......(1) The value of Eq. 1 may be approximated for a finite pressure change by using the well-known relation, c = V1 - V1/Ve (p2-p1), ........(2) in which p1 > p1 and V2 > V2 and V1 + V2/2. The instantaneous compressibility may also be estimated from the slope of a curve on which log V is plotted vs pa. In this instance, it has been shown that c = In V1/V2/p2-p1 ...........(3) Eq. 3 may be used for variable compressibilities by plot-ting V vs p on semi-log paper. ISOTHERMAL COMPRESSIBILITY OF UNDERSATURATED LIQUID In the case of gases, the compressibility has been defined by Muskat' and others as Co = 1/p - ?z/z?p ..........(5) This was later generalized through application of the theorem of corresponding states' to co = 1/pr - (?z/z?pr) T8 ........(6) in which c, is defined as the pseudo-reduced compres-sibility and is numerically equal to (c.p,) and the sign is arbitrarily changed for mathematical convenience. Eq. 6 is general and applies to gases and liquids. In the case of liquids, c. = c1,pe, but if Eq. 6 is used, values of z and ?z/?p, must be determined for the liquid in question. The difficulty of obtaining accurate values of ?z/?p,, particularly in the region where T, is approaching 1.00, was pointed out in the previous paper'. This method of approach is unreliable for extension into computations of liquid compressibilities. On the other hand, c, can also be defined as follows: - Cr = 1/Vr (?Vr/?pr) Tr ......(7) and from which, Cr = 1/pr (?pr/?pr) Tr .....(8) In accordance with the theorem of corresponding states, Vr = V/Vr, p, = p/pr and pr = p/pr. For the purpose of this investigation, the set of fluids2 having ze = 0.27 was chosen because it in-cludes most of the heavier hydrocarbons usually found in those complex mixtures loosely defined as "reservoir oils". Data on undersaturated liquids in Ref. 2 were rearranged to conform with Eq. 8. THE importance of contact angles in flotation has long been recognized, but little has been done to get quantitative relationships between the surface coverage of the mineral by the reagent, the length of the hydrocarbon chain, and the contact angle. It is well known that for a complete monolayer on the surface of a mineral the contact angle 8 is determined only by the reagent1 and principally by the chain length of the hydrocarbon radical. Although for flotation the monolayer usually is regarded as being complete, early experiments of Wark and Cox&apos; showed that at very small concentrations of potassium ethyl xanthate the contact angle on galena changed in a continuous way from 0&apos; to the equilibrium value of 60". Further, Gaudin and Vincenta showed a similar continuity using heptylic acid and sphalerite. This shows that with probably incomplete monolayers, 0 varies with the degree of surface coverage. At the time these experiments were made it was impossible to measure the actual amount of surface coverage, especially since the decrease of the collector concentration in the liquor could be influenced by chemical side reactions. Through the use of the radioactive tracer method for the measurement of the amount of collector adsorbed on the surface of the mineral, Gaudin and Bloecher&apos; were able to determine accurately the actual surface coverage of dodecylamine acetate on quartz, but they did not measure any contact angles. It is believed that the relationship between the surface coverage and the contact angle is extremely important in flotation, especially as Gaudin and Bloecher showed that a 95 pct recovery is possible with a coverage of only 5 pct. Theoretical Considerations The work of adhesion W is the energy bound (in ergs per sq cm) when an interface is formed. It is determined by the difference of the free surface energies (surface tensions) of the respective phases 7j and yZ before contact and the interfacial free surface energy y, after contact. Vermiculite is the name used for those micaceous minerals with a ferromagnesian aluminum silicate composition and the unique property of exfoliating to a low density material when heated. Commercially, the exfoliated products are also called vermiculite, or more exactly, expanded vermiculite. In its exfoliated state, vermiculite serves many markets, chief among them construction, agriculture, horticulture, and general industry. Composition and Properties Vermiculite, in a natural state, has the characteristic mica habit, splits readily into thin laminae, flexible but inelastic. In a mineralogical sense, vermiculite is a hydrated silicate with no exact chemical composition. The structural formula for a macroscopic, trioctahedral vermiculite may be written: [ ] The structure of vermiculite is basically that of a talc, and it could be regarded as a trioctahedral member of the smectite group. Macroscopically, vermiculite displays the prominent monoclinic crystal faces that are commonly marked by lines at 60° and 120°. Hardness varies from 1.5 to 2.8 or more; specific gravities are between 2.1 and 2.8; color is amber, bronze, brown, dark green, or black. When heated quickly to an elevated tempera¬ture, vermiculite expands by exfoliating at right angles to the cleavage, into wormlike pieces (the name vermiculite is derived from the Latin `vermiculare,&apos; to breed worms). This characteristic of expansion, the basis for commercial use of the mineral, is the result of the mechanical separation of the layers by the rapid conversion of contained water to steam. The increase in bulk volume of commercial grades is 8 to 12 times, but individual flakes may expand as much as 30 times. All expansion occurs at right angles to the basal cleavage. Vermiculite may also be expanded by a number of chemical processes such as soaking in hydrogen peroxide, weak acids, and other electrolytes. There is a color change during expansion that is dependent upon the composition of the vermiculite and furnace atmospheres. Heating in an oxidizing atmosphere produces dull gray colors. The iron is generally not oxidized during chemical expansion. The exfoliation of the vermiculite crystal results in large pores being formed between groups of platelets. Thus exfoliation can make available a large increase in void volume without significantly changing the surface area of the platelets. This characteristic is important in the chemical carrier applications of vermiculite. Although there has been much research on the chemical and structural composition of vermiculite, an exact formula and composition cannot be described. This is to be expected since vermiculite derives from a number of different mineral sources. As has been proposed, vermiculite is not a single mineral species, but families of related minerals. Additionally, commercial interest in the end product has resulted in the name vermiculite being applied to the very voluminous, bloated products from calcination of baueritized (bleached) phlogopite. This has also resulted in many names for the specific vermiculite found in a particular deposit. All of this difficulty arises from the nature of its crystal chemistry. Consequently, vermiculite is now thought of as several related variable mineral series rather than a group of related species. The vermiculites have a common silica tetrahedral sheet structure with separating ions. It is now generally agreed that vermiculites must also be regarded as true clay minerals. Calculations are presented for the design of a silicon photodiode in which the incident light beam makes multiple passes between the detector surfaces. Total internal reflection is used for this "light-trapping" effect. By this means, the optical path length can be extended to several millimeters, while the electrode separation remains less than 102 cm, as required for nanosecond response time. Data are presented for a Schottky barrier photodiode constructed on a multiply reflecting silicon base wafer. It is shown that the long-wavelength response is considerably extended in such structures without a corresponding sacrifice in high-speed response. The development of efficient and powerful lasers at 1.06 p has stimulated interest in detectors which operate at this wavelength. In typical silicon photodiodes, for detecting 1.06 p radiation, the requirements for high speed and high sensitivity are mutually exclusive. Since the absorption coefficient is only 25 cm-&apos;, a lo-&apos;-cm path length is required to absorb 92 pct of the incident 1.06 p radiation. If the electrode separation is greater than 10 cm, however, the carrier transit time will be greater than 1 nsec. This problem can be solved by allowing the incident light beam to make multiple passes between the electrodes. The optical path length can then be extended to several millimeters, as required for complete absorption, while the electrode separation remains less than 10&apos; cm, as required for nanosecond response time. In a typical photodiode geometry, one ohmic contact and one rectifying contact are formed on the two opposite surfaces of a base wafer, and the wafer thickness determines the electrode separation. The objective of the multiple reflection design is to allow all 1.06 p radiation to enter the detector front surface and to form the back detector surface so that no 1.06 radiation can exit. Total internal reflection at the back detector surface is well-suited for light trapping of 1.06 p radiation because the relatively large dielectric constant of silicon leads to a critical angle of 16.5 deg for total internal reflection. LIGHT TRAPPING It is well-known that, as light passes from one medium such as air into another medium such as glass or silicon, the angle of refraction is always less than the angle of incidence. In the limiting case, where the incident rays approach an angle of 90 deg with the normal, the refracted rays approach a fixed angle +, beyond which no refraction is possible: this is called the critical angle. It follows from Snell&apos;s law that where = critical angle, n - index of refraction of air, n&apos; - index of refraction of the medium. Applying the principle of reversibility of light rays, all internal angles of incidence greater than +, will produce total internal reflection and "light trapping". The index of refraction of silicon at 1.06 p is 3.5,&apos; and the critical angle is thus 16.5 deg. Fig. 1 shows these relationships for silicon. This very small critical angle in silicon is significant because all incident angles between 16.5 and 90 deg will produce total internal reflection and "light trapping". This effect can be implemented with a "prismlike" geometry, so that incident light can be introduced into the sample without loss and "trapped". PHOTOSIGNALS A precise knowledge of the absorption coefficient at 1.06 in silicon is of critical importance to the design of fast and efficient silicon photodiodes for 1.06 radiation. Dash and newman2 show a value of 25 cm-l, and our measurements have corroborated this value. Assuming that the collection of photoinduced minority carriers is perfect, the quantum efficiency of a photodiode is dependent only on the absorption coefficient. It then follows from Lambert&apos;s law that where QE is the quantum efficiency in pct, a is the absorption coefficient, d is the optical path length, and the reflectivity at the surface is assumed to be completely suppressed by an optical interference layer. Fig. 2 gives the maximum quantum efficiency for 1.06p radiation of a silicon photodiode with optical path length d, using Eq. [2]. The ultimate response time of a fully depleted photodiode to an incident light pulse can be considered to be the arrival times of all photoinduced carriers at the contacts, i.e., the minority carriers at the junction interface and the majority carriers at the oppo-

THE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given com- position and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO) . This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe203), and phosphorus oxide (P205) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted.
