A new logging method, called induction logging, is described; it measures the conductivity, or resistivity, of the strata traversed by a bore hole. The apparatus, which is briefly described, comprises a coil system coupled with the ground by induction, so that there is no need for direct contact with the mud, or with the formations. For that reason, the method is particularly useful in oil base mud, and it was first applied to that case. A discussion concerning the respective contribution of each region of ground in the vicinity of the coil system is given. Through the concept of a geometrical factor, it is demonstrated that the total signal, which measures the apparent conductivity, is the summation of the partial products — geometrical factor by conductivity — for the different regions of the ground under consideration. It is thus possible to establish, for each type of coil arangement, investigation characteristic as well as departure curves and correction charts for beds of various thicknesses. This should greatly facilitate the quantative interpretation of the field logs, even in cases where such interpretation would have been difficult on electric logs taken with electrodes. It is also shown that focussing combinations of coils can be used, which give, directly on the recorded log, a value close to the true conductivity, even for fairly thin beds, thus eliminating in most cases the need for corrections. These focussing systems also give a sharper definition of the boundaries between successive strain.

DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over- burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi- circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. The pipe line from the pump consists of 1750 ft. of 8-in. spiral steel flanged pipe and 800 ft. of 4-in. spiral steel flanged pipe. The connection from the pump

EXPLORATION of Lake Superior iron ores is done principally by drilling. The soft iron ores are churn drilled and the harder ores are diamond drilled. In exploratory work in the harder formations, where the diamond drill is used, the sample comprises both core and cuttings. The care given in handling and preserving the core depends on the im-portance that may be attached to certain characteris-tic strata in different formations. The following instructions for the care of core samples are issued by the Oglebay Norton Co. for diamond drill work done for them on the Gogebic Range of Michigan: The driller shall be careful upon removing the core from the core-barrel to keep the core in exact order. Not only should the pieces of core be kept in exact relation to each other, but care should be used not to turn them end for end. Core should be placed in the core-box from left to right in each row. Each drill should be furnished with small, hinged cover core-boxes, and each drill should be well supplied with empty boxes. Core remaining at the drill when the drillers are not working should be locked up. The practice of picking sample pieces of core and carrying them away from the drill to be examined in better light, or shown to someone else, is unnecessary and prohibited. The reason for this is that these pieces are seldom returned to the core-boxes and valuable information or "markers" may be lost. If the inspector suspects that a critical point is reached in the drilling and he cannot determine at the drill, he should remove the entire core-box and see that the drill is immediately furnished with an empty core-box. It is customary to split the core longitudinally so that one-half may be ground to a pulp for analysis and the other half may be kept for future inspection. The core should be filed in permanent core-boxes, properly labelled, if the core is to be kept in exact order as taken from the core-barrel. Otherwise, it is often filed in tin boxes inn the way that sludge samples are filed. To obtain the average analysis, the core and cutting samples obtained in the same run are analyzed separately and the analyses are combined in the proper ratio.

This investigation was undertaken to determine the quality of different iron blast-furnace slags as desulfurizing agents, and the possibility of using, in the blast furnace, materials of higher sulfur content than is now common. The solution of the problem would render possible the use of higher sulfur iron ores for pig iron and cokes containing more sulfur than now employed, and the economic manufacture of irons and steels of lower sulfur content. It is generally assumed that the sulfur that reaches the lower part of the iron blast furnace is removed from the pig iron by combining with lime to form calcium sulfide. Most of the sulfur introduced with the charge is in combination with iron or manganese or, perhaps in the coke, as a carbon compound.1 The iron and manganese sulfides are more soluble in the iron than is calcium sulfide, and as the latter is generally said to to be more soluble in the slag than the iron and manganese sulfides, this greater solubility of calcium sulfide in the slag tends to free the metal from sulfur. This greater solubility of the calcium sulfide is used not only to reduce the sulfur contents of the pig iron in the blast furnace, but by this means also low-sulfur steels are produced in the open-hearth and electric furnaces. The reaction2 FeS + CaO + CO = Fe + CaS + CO2 requires a high temperature and strongly reducing conditions in the presence of lime. (Communication to the Secretary): There is one chemical factor which has not been considered in the author's tabulation of tests, but which is none the . less important because it cannot be practically estimated, and that is the element oxygen. This element has been, and probably will continue for some time to be, one of the great causes of the continual discrepancies between the chemical and physical properties of steel. Probably oxygen occurs, in important proportions, only in soft steel, such as that which we are now considering. In this steel its physical effect is to diminish tensile strength and elongation. The percentage of oxygen in the steel, under working-conditions that are as uniform as possible, is likely to vary inversely as that of the manganese, or perhaps, and more probably, it may bear even an inverse geometrical ratio to the manganese-content. At all events, to follow the author's plan, the line representing the loss of strength due to oxygen is probably a curve. Plotted by itself, the line would probably be straight; that is, the decrease in strength would be proportional to the increase in oxygen, but if the results were superposed on the percentages of manganese, they would give a curve, because the percentages of oxygen increase faster than those of manganese decrease. Were the oxygen-line to be developed and added to the diagram, it would seem that the manganese-line should then be straight. Due allowance for the effect of oxygen, therefore, would modify two features of the paper. It would increase the figure for the strength of pure iron from 38,000 to about 45;000 pounds per square inch, and it would straighten out the manganese-curve. Simulation of nonlinear grinding systems is discussed in the context of the size-discretized batch-grinding model. A linear approximation of environment-dependent (or nonlinear) selection functions is postulated for systems which exhibit feed grinding orders less than unity. For this, a convex linear combination of zero and first-order selection function forms is used to obtain an analytical solution that can be used for simulation. An example in which marked nonlinear behavior occurs is rod-mill grinding. Accordingly, a series of grinding experiments was carried out in a batch laboratory rod mill to test these techniques; agreement between experiment and the model was found to be very good. Recently, significant progress has been made in the simulation of linear grinding systems by using a population balance mathematical model. Herbst and Fuer-stenaul presented a parameter estimation scheme that can be used with the size-discretized batch-grinding model, and Gumtz and Fuerstenau3 have extended these techniques to the simulation of locked-cycle grinding. Grandy et aL." summarized the simulation of linear systems and noted important alternate solutions to the batch-grinding equation. Kelsall et a1.'-" discussed the dynamic simulation of linear batch grinding, as well as linear open and closed-circuit grinding. In all of these, the key word is linear, which certainly restricts the engineer trying to simulate a variety of grinding systems. This paper discusses an approach for the simulation of non-linear grinding systems, particularly those which exhibit grinding orders less than unity. Experimentally, dry rod-mill grinding is used to evaluate the technique presented. Batch Grinding Model The size-discretized batch-grinding model has been discussed in detail by Mika et al.'.' and by Herbst and Fuerstenau,' and therefore, will only be briefly developed here. The model is formulated by making a differential mass balance of each size fraction in such a manner that the equation parameters are precisely defined in terms of selection and breakage functions,' which can be either calculated'.' or estimated1 from experimental data. The model is phenomenological because it averages all stress-application events in the system and, therefore, does not distinguish the manner in which individual particles are stressed.' For this average environment, the resistance of all particles in a size fraction to breakage is defined by that size-frac-tion's selection function; and when fracture occurs from an average event, the breakage product size distribution is defined again by that size-fraction's breakage function. The model is deterministic and is derived in terms of a continuous time variable and a discretized size variable,' i.e., the n mass fractions associated with the n defined size intervals (see Table 1 for nomenclature).

EARLIER investigations of the potential-drop-ratio method of electrical prospecting have indicated that under suitable conditions this method is well adapted to the location of formation boundaries in stratified ground. A description of this development was given several years ago by H. Lundberg and Th. Zuschlag.1 The curves published by these authors for the potential-drop-ratio variation above a horizontal contact indicated a definite relation of the position of the curve peak to the depth of the interface. The theory underlying this relation was subsequently studied by Z. Mitera in greater detail,2 and the theoretical deductions were compared with the results of tank experiments. The investigations available at this writing were confined to studies of horizontal formation boundaries. It is the purpose of this paper to extend the scope of the previous work to the problem of dipping layers. THEORY Consider the case of three media of different resistivities, whose interfaces are not parallel. If a point-source is located in one of these interfaces, its images do not lie in a straight line, but on the circumference of a circle whose center is at the hypothetical junction of the interfaces. R. F. Aldredge3 determined the relation that exists between the degrees of dip of the two interfaces and the distances between the various images and the point for which the potential is to be found. As seen in Fig. I, three media of resistivities po, pi, and p2 are involved, and the source I is located at the interface of the media (po) and (pi). The perpendicular depth of the lower interface is h,? is the dip, R is the distance between source I and potential point P, and r is the distance between the images and that point. To distinguish between images lying above the ground interface and those below, the notation "odd" and "even" images will be employed; images below the ground interface will be termed "odd" and those above "even." THE present symposium on flotation machines provides a unique opportunity for group reappraisal of standard or habitual viewpoints. A symposium is by definition a trading post for observations that might prove complementary when put together, thus leading to useful thoughts that might not have been evident from the original observations individually. The present paper, pertaining to power consumption in flotation, is deliberately an experiment of that kind. Data were solicited from the operating superintendents of several of the major flotation plants on this continent. The information received, covering a total of 14 separate operations in seven plants, has been collated in terms of power intensity; that is, the total power input per cubic foot of cell volume. This departs somewhat from the conventional expression of power per ton of ore treated, though the latter figure is also given for the plants concerned. Because of wartime restrictions, particularly in Canada, identifying names of plants and machines are withheld. Not as a firm conclusion, but as a tender for symposium discussion, the following points are made: I. That flotation is a power operation in much the same sense as ball milling. 2. That contact time is the complement of power intensity and may be decreased as the latter is increased. 3. That a decrease in flotation power per ton of ore can result from an increase in power intensity. ANALOGY WITH GRINDING In grinding, it has become axiomatic that the more the power put into a given operation, the greater the work performance. The analogous view is now proposed that the effectiveness of any flotation operation will be related to the mechanical energy usefully applied to that operation. Under this view, each increment of properly directed input energy should give either an increase in unit tonnage or an improvement in the metallurgical separation (concentrate grade or tailing grade), until either the theoretical limit imposed by mineral constitution or surface condition is reached, or until further increments of power become uneconomic under the law of diminishing returns. Thus, as in grinding, there are two forms of output that greater power input or improved utilization of power can produce. As for the law of diminishing returns, lower unit cost of power through improved generating efficiency in the past decade has pushed the limit back. Over and above this, however, there is strong indication in the operationg data herein presented that higher power intensity results in an actual economy of over-all power consumption. Like crushing and grinding, flotation accomplishes a rupture of the forces of molecular attraction, by taking particles from the common environment and placing them in the two separate environments of

Coal is a term applied to vegetable matter which, through geological processes of heat and pressure, has had both its physical and chemical properties changed. Because its chemical composition is variable, geologists classify coal as a rock rather than a mineral. Peat represents the initial stages in the development of coal, although not classified as coal itself. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF COAL The physical properties are concerned with the characteristics of coal in its natural state, or prior to its end use as a fuel. For example, the hardness of coal determines the maintenance cost on coal handling equipment; the specific gravity of coal determines the coal preparation techniques used in a cleaning plant as well as the capacity of coal bins, boats and size of cargo, and other coal storage facilities. The physical properties are, of course, dependent upon the chemical constituents that make up coal, and thus all properties are interrelated. Specific Gravity The specific gravity of a body is the ratio of the weight of the body in air and the weight of an equal volume of water. The specific gravity of pure coal ranges between 1.25 and 1.70, generally increasing with rank. The most important use of this physical characteristic is the part that it plays in the cleaning of coal by wet wash methods. The basic principle on which these operate is that the specific gravity of coals differs from their associated impurities and that there is a relationship between the velocity of the fall of particles in water and their density. Since the specific gravity of slate is around 2.5 and pyrite is about 5.0, pyrite and slate will fall to the bottom of a container filled with water more rapidly than coal. THE purification of two metals, antimony and tin, by zone refining is described, and a reciprocating method of passing molten zones through a straight ingot, which effects a considerable economy of time and apparatus, is discussed. Antimony has been used extensively as a doping agent in germanium and silicon. More recently, it has become important in the preparation of new semiconducting compounds such as InSb, GaSb, and AlSb. High purity is especially necessary in this latter use, since the antimony may comprise as much as 80 pct by weight of the compound. Antimony is generally available in a commercial form of about 99.8 pct purity. Column 1 of Table I is a typical emission spectra analysis of commercially available 99.8 pct antimony. Zone refining has been quite successful in increasing the purity of such samples. Columns 2 to 4 of Table I are analyses of an ingot of the antimony of column 1 after the passage of seven molten zones in an atmosphere of nitrogen. The ingot length was 9 1/2 in.; the mean zone length was 2 in.; convection was the only means of stirring. The column headings are sample locations in inches from the leading end of the ingot. FoR reasons well known to mining engineers, wet grinding is quite universal in plants having to do with the extraction of metallic values from crude ores. In the processing of the nonmetallic and industrial minerals, dry grinding is the more common method. The crude materials usually contain less moisture than is required for wet grinding and the products usually are marketed in dry form; most of them as powders. To grind wet, therefore, would entail the addition of water and an expense for drying the product, which is not justified. Furthermore, the material would be a dried cake that would still have to be pulverized or disintegrated before use. For producing fine products, air separators have largely replaced the earlier practice of sizing with screens and bolting reels. Mills in which the air-separating feature is an integral part of the design are now commonplace. Mill designs are many and air systems have developed along various lines, but for the purpose of this discussion, only the fundamental idea need be emphasized— the idea of using air for sizing and removing pulverized material from a grinding mill. About 20 years ago, when the use of mills equipped with air separation had become common practice, heated air or gas was introduced to such a system for the removal of moisture. The purpose of this discussion is to outline the developments and trends that have followed this experiment. It is an important development, for mills equipped with air separation are now universally used for pulverizing not only nonmetallic and industrial minerals, but a great variety of other materials. All such mills are essentially the same. Dried material is pulverized, removed by an air stream, trapped in a cyclone collector, and relatively clean air from the cyclone is returned through a fan to the mill. There is no theoretical need for a vent from the system. The practical need is to vent the air that leaks into the system; and, since the cyclone is not 100 per cent efficient as a dust collector, this vented air carries some dust with it. The initial attempt at drying was made on a system like that described, by the addition of a furnace. The minus pressure within the mill draws hot gas from the furnace. Infiltration air, along with the drying gases and evaporated moisture, is vented as before. The first application was made to a mill used for pulverizing coal. The coal contained very little moisture, so very little drying effect was needed for the success of this experiment. Actually, some calculated efficiencies of over 100 per cent were obtained before due allowance was made for the conversion of mill power into useful heat. When moisture is low, the heat obtained from the conversion of milt power is an appreciable part of that required. The coal contained very little moisture, so very little drying effect was needed for the success of this experiment. Actually, some calculated efficiencies of over 100 per cent were obtained before due allowance was made for the conversion of mill power into useful heat. When moisture is low, the heat obtained from the conversion of milt power is an appreciable part of that required. "The 100,000 volt sub-station at Butte is located near the center of the district in which the power is distributed. The sub-station building is 150 feet by 50 feet in plan and 50 feet high. It is a brick walled, steel framed structure with concrete floors and roof.There are installed at present four banks of single-phase transformers, rated at 3,600 k-w. per bank and connected in delta on both high and low tension sides. They step the voltage down from 102,000 to 2,500, at which voltage it is distributed to customers. The transformers are installed in fireproof compartments, entirely shut off from the rest of the building by brick walls and opening only out of doors. The transformers are mounted on wheels and can readily be run out onto a flat car, which stands on a track running parallel with the building in front of the row of transformer compartments. This arrangement furnishes a convenient method of handling the transformers, both at the time of installation and afterward, in case it is necessary to make repairs."
