I HAVE already referred to this interesting locality in the opening address, but at the request of some of the members of the Institute, brought before them specimens of the ore and the accompanying rock. The ore, which is cassiterite, is also met with elsewhere in Maine, at Paris and Hebron, but it there occurs associated with orthoclase, quartz, tourmaline, and beryl, in concretionary granite veins, which cut the micaceous gneisses of the White Mountain series. At Winslow the veins traverse an impure gray micaceous limestone, which is found in many parts of this region, and is subordinate to the same gneissic series. The veins, which are seldom more than an inch or two in thickness, are abundant through a considerable breadth of the rock, and are interlaminated with it, occupying places between the sedimentary layers, which are distinctly marked by different shades of color. Occasionally, however, they cut across the stratification for a little distance, showing that the disrupting action was not always confined to tearing the layers apart. The vein-stone consists of purple fluor-spar, and silvery white mica with quartz. In this gangue the cassiterite, nearly black in color, is disseminated in small crystalline masses, sometimes one-half an inch in diameter, and is associated with a little mispickel. I have only seen the veins as exposed at a single point, but was informed that similar veins holding the ore are met with at a distance of several thousand feet

In airborne gravity surveys effects of acceleration and irregular movements of the aircraft must be balanced out or overcome. The gradient of vertical gravity is recorded, therefore, by using two masses instead of one. As the amplitude variations are infinitesimal and difficult to measure accurately, at present it is enough to determine whether variation of gradient during flight is positive or negative. The positive portions of the pattern can then be indicated and contoured. Even with these simplifications, the source of energy must be exceptionally stable. The work of an engineer is to direct natural forces so that the: bring about the results that he wishes to secure. Heretofore he ha concerned himself chiefly with physical forces and inanimate objects until he has secured a truly marvelous degree of control over them The great problem of the present age is to secure a like degree of know1 edge and control of the human factor. Progress has already been made along this line, but it is only a beginning. Wilhelm Ostwald says tha scientific knowledge enables a man to be a true prophet; but it must be remembered that a good many people do not seem to be able to main tain a high average in prophecy. In short, 'the average of knowledge is not equal to the average needs of the present time, but continually fails to keep pace with it. It has been aptly said that the really essentia need of the period is for more brains; if we only had sufficient knowledg and sagacity we could not only solve all difficulties, but prevent then from arising. This generalization holds good for an industrial organization. Th most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logica course for an engineer in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development training, and guiding of all the brains in his organization. This is easie said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objective: the maximum of productive work, and the development of the individual who perform it. This is essentially like the rebuilding and enlarging of plant, keeping it in full operation the while. On the other hand, if th aim is merely for maximum production from an organization, withou offering opportunity for development, the final outcome will necessari be like that of a plant that is driven at full capacity without stoppin for repairs or improvements; it eventually becomes so run down th either a complete rebuilding is necessary or else it has to be abandone

Vermiculite is the name generally applied to the group of hydrated ferromagnesian aluminum silicates that are characterized by the ability to expand when heated. This process, called exfoliation, results in a lightweight product of commercial value. Most uses of vermiculite are for the expanded material. The chief markets are in construction, agriculture, and horticulture, with lesser uses in general industry. Composition and Properties Vermiculite, in its natural state, has the characteristic micaceous habit, a perfect basal cleavage which causes splitting into thin laminae that are soft, pliable, and inelastic. The structure of vermiculite is basically that of a talc. The prominent monoclinic crystal faces are often marked by lines at 60° and 120°. Hardness varies from 1.5 to 2 or more; specific gravities are between 2.1 and 2.8; color varies from almost clear to amber, bronze, brown, green, or black. Vermiculite feels like talc, especially when wet. Although much research has been performed on the chemical and structural composition, there is not yet complete agreement on the exact formula. This is to be expected when different workers have examined the many different varieties. Vermiculite is not considered to be a single mineral species but a family of related minerals. The structural formula for a trioctahedral vermiculite may be written: (H20)-(Mg,Ca,K)-(A12,Fe,Mg)-(Si,A1,Fe)4O10 (OH) 2 Hydrobiotite also occurs with vermiculite and is usually considered a vermiculite for commercial uses. When heated quickly to elevated temperatures, vermiculite expands by exfoliating at right angles to the cleavage into wormlike particles. The name vermiculite is derived from the Latin vermiculare, to breed worms. This characteristic of expansion is the result of the mechanical separation of the layers by the rapid conversion of contained water to steam. The decrease in bulk density of commercial grades is usually approximately 10 times, from 50 to 5 lb/ft3, but varies depending on the quality, size, and furnace efficiency. Individual flakes may expand up to 30 times. Vermiculite may also be expanded by soaking in chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, weak acids, and other electrolytes. Color change during expansion is dependent upon the type of vermiculite and furnace conditions. Heating in an oxidizing atmosphere produces a dull gray or tan color, whereas a reducing atmosphere can produce a bronze or gold color. The expansion of the vermiculite crystal results in large pores being formed between the platelets. Thus, exfoliation makes available a large increase in void volume which is important in the application of vermiculite as a chemical carrier. Mathieson and Walker (1954) state vermiculite must be regarded as a true clay mineral. The characteristic properties of the mineral, such as high cation exchange capacity, organic complexing ability, and variable interlamellar distance are very similar to those of montmorillonite. The cation exchange capacity of vermiculite is one of the highest of all the clay minerals. The interplatelet space is accessible to penetration by some electrostatically neutral molecules. Water and glycerine are two common substances whose molecules may be so imbibed. In the natural state and under normal atmospheric conditions, water occupies the spaces between the silicate layers. Within the past few years, particularly because of the rapid growth of the airplane industry during the war, considerable attention has been paid to the manufacture of light-wall cold-drawn seamless and welded steel tubing for structural purposes. While the manufacture of such tubing is not, in itself, a difficult matter, some difficulties have been encountered in producing the same under specifications requiring definite physical properties. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods of manufacture and the properties that may be obtained by such methods for tubing coming within about 1/2 to 2 in. (12.7 to 50.8 mm.) outside diameter and 10 to 22 Birmingham wire gage (0.134 to 0.028 in. wall thickness). Such tubing is largely used as structural material in the aircraft industry, and it is of the utmost importance that the physical and chemical properties should be known, and also that the various factors entering into the manufacture should be under such control as to allow these properties to be varied and held within definite limits. In general, tubing may be divided into four classes: namely, specialty tubing, such as riveted-sheet or plate, lock jointed, etc.; brazed tubing; welded tubing; and seamless tubing. Welded tubing may be divided into hot product, such as lap welded and butt welded, and cold product, such as acetylene and electric welded. Seamless tubing may be hot rolled or cold drawn. Specialty Tubing The first two classes present mainly mechanical or structural engineering problems. A simple form of tube is made by riveting together the overlapping edges of rolled sheets or plates formed into a cylinder. Because of the nature of its construction, such a tube is necessarily limited to relatively large sizes. Lock-jointed tubing is produced by passing low-carbon strip through a forming machine having suitable rolls and dies, its manufacture is almost entirely a question of design of the forming machine and its satisfactory operation. The chief application of such tubing is in the manufacture of bedsteads.

AS far as the present writers know, this system of flotation has not been used elsewhere in this country, but in the last couple of years it has been introduced, with minor variations, at one plant in England and one in Wales.' The system has been described and discussed in a number of publications.2-5 The following is quoted from an abstract of the latest of these,5 a paper presented at an International Conference on Industrial Combustion in 1952. On the basis of experience to date with the commercial plants, it is believed that the kerosene-flotation process incorporates all the necessary elements to make it greatly superior to anything else now available for treating of fines in wet processes of coal preparation. Additional study and investigation are still needed, however, to determine if certain phases of the process can be improved to such an extent as to make it generally satisfactory and acceptable to the industry. Further improvements will be needed with respect to the capacities of the flotation cells and the reagent consumption. The situation referred to above explains why an investigation is being made of the possibilities of achieving better cell capacities. Results obtained from this investigation, which is still in progress, are believed significant with regard to both cell capacity in general and the relation of cell design to cell capacity in particular. Commercial equipment now being used in a laboratory-type investigation should have performance characteristics similar to those of the larger machines. Equipment and Procedures: All flotation tests have been made in a standard Denver sub-A 24x24-in. unit cell of 12-cu ft volume. Cell modifications to make it more suitable for the tests were an adjustable front-wall section for varying cell depth and a perforated scraper-drag assembly for removal of the float product. There is also an apron dry-coal feeder, a gravity-feed water supply, reagent feeders, and a centrifugal pump that feeds the mixture of coal, water, and reagents into the flotation cell. A wattmeter connected into the drive-motor circuit records the power requirements of the impeller throughout each run. Dry coal, water, and reagents are all fed through a pan-type intake to the feed pump. A Sturtevant blower was set up to furnish air for supercharging. A centrifugal pump with a garbage-can intake provides for disposal of refuse flow to an outside settling tank. Figs. 1 and 2 show the flotation cell; Fig. 2 also illustrates the blower for supercharging. For purposes of this investigation, the percentage by weight of the feed coal recovered in the float product under a standard set of conditions has been considered as the criterion of cell capacity. The authors realize that such a criterion may be somewhat unorthodox, as the term cell capacity is usually understood to refer to feed input and ordinarily takes into account the ash analyses of the float product and refuse. However, the word capacity is flexible enough so that Webster gives one definition as maximum output, a definition which seems to justify, at least partly, acceptance of the above criterion. It has been the authors' experience in the Birmingham district that the ash-reduction efficiency of the coal-flotation process is generally satisfactory and that the only real problem is to increase the rate of float recovery so that the feed rate to any given bank of cells can be increased without undue loss of coal in the refuse. Originally it was planned to operate the flotation cell to simulate continuous operation during sampling periods. It was assumed that operating for reasonable time with feed coal, water, and reagents turned on would stabilize conditions so that the weight of float coal discharged during a fixed time interval would be an accurate measure of the rate at which the coal was being floated. It developed, however, that this supposition was erroneous. The float coal, caught for fixed time intervals and weighed, gave widely varying results in duplicate runs. Efforts to correct this trouble failed, and it was decided to try to operate on a batch-test basis, whereby all the float coal produced during a run on a known weight of feed coal would be caught in tubs, dewatered, and weighed. This method gives consistent and reproducible results, with total float product weight rarely varying by more than 3 or 4 pct on duplicate runs. The standard test procedure is as follows: A 132-lb sample of dry feed coal is weighed and placed in the feed hopper. The feeder is adjusted for a rate of 800 lb per hr. Feed water and reagents are turned on, and the feed and refuse pumps are started. One minute later the impeller is started. Six minutes are allowed for the cell to fill up with the water-reagent mixture. The feed of dry coal is started at the end of this 6-min period. One minute later the float-coal removal drag is started. The float coal is caught in one tub for the first 6 min after the flow of feed coal starts. Tubs are then changed, and the float coal is caught in a second tub until the feed coal runs out, when the tubs are again interchanged to catch the float coal for the remainder of the run in the first tub. The cell is kept running for 3 min with the water and reagents on after the feed stops to allow residual float coal to be removed. At the end of a test the wet float coal in both tubs is weighed and the total weight recorded. The product in the second tub is used for moisture determination and screen-size analyses. When the

PREVIOUS studies of the shock loading of randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregates have firmly established that, after rather short load duration, hydrostatic compression closely approximates the shocked state.' However, McQueen deduced from pressure measurements with good time resolution that, during shock loading, metals begin to undergo a stress relaxation at the yield stress. He suggested that the relaxation is due to plastic deformation accompanying the change from a one-dimensional compression to a three-dimensional, hydrostatic, compression.' Stress relaxation may occur faster as stress is increased above the yield stress, but the existence of unidirectionally compressed states for finite times suggests that the concept of a unidirectionally distorted lattice should furnish considerable insight into the mechanical behavior of materials subjected to shock loading. Here, a crystallographic analysis is presented for the hypothetical situation where atom motion may be considered as unidirectional which, as indicated above, is a useful extension of the macroscopic concept of shock loading to the microscopic domain. Only motion caused by the com-pressive forces is treated; i.e., lattice vibrations upon which this motion is superimposed, as discussed by Fitzgerald, are ignored.3 The purpose of the analysis to be presented is to develop a description for single crystals of the lattice rotations that occur for idealized uniaxial strain deformation. The usefulness of such an analysis in realistic deformation is to give a method of specification of those properties of an initially distorted lattice which would affect the subsequent deformation. Non-axial complications that arise experimentally, such as off-axis rarefaction waves, must be treated in proper context. Consider the material element shown in Fig. 1 and let the compression be uniform at all regions of the element. Then, any interior point of the element is displaced in proportion to its distance from the base of the element. Accordingly, if the top of a unit element is displaced by an amount, (-K), with respect to the base, a point P(X, Y) will be displaced by (-KY). Crystal planes are, therefore, rotated by the compression. Analysis of this rotation may be accomplished from the geometry shown in Fig. 1 where the line OP is the edge of the plane {hkl} and N is its normal. It will be shown in this paper that the temperature is of considerable importance where it is desired to separate pyrite or arsenopyrite from other minerals. It is probable that some of the differences obtained in the flotation of these minerals at plants working under otherwise similar conditions are due to temperature variations. The influence of temperature on the flotation of galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite by xanthates is less marked than its influence on pyrite flotation. Experimental Method The methods used have been described previously.l-4 In each test the clean mineral specimen was immersed in a solution prepared by adding the reagents in the following order: (1) sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid as necessary to buffer the solution and to give approximately the pH value desired, (2) sodium cyanide, (3) copper sulphate, (4) ethyl xanthate, followed by (5) a final adjustment of pH value. After ½ hr. the mineral was tested for a xanthate film by bringing a bubble of air into apparent contact with the submerged polished surface. If true contact (spreading) was not obtained within ½ min. and after cleaning the surface by wiping with a small linen pad, it was concluded that the adsorption of a xanthate film had been prevented. Following the method already described (ref. 2), curves have been constructed such that for a solution composition corresponding to any point below the curve, contact between mineral and air is possible, whereas for a solution composition corresponding to any point above the curve, contact is impossible.

Stimulated emission from Nd+3 in yttrium uanadate fYVOJ is reported. Single crystals of YVO4:Nd, obtained from Linde Col-p., have improved substantially in the last several months. Pulsed thresholds of YVO, laser rods are now approximately 2 to 3 5, cowparable to tliose for YAG:Nd. Yttrium uanadate crystalli~es irz a space group similar to zircon. All rare-earth vanadates have this structure. Rare-earth ions sucll as Nd+3 which substitutes for Y+3, aye situated irz a strong tetragonal crystal field which lacks inversion symmetry. This condition increases the p'robability of the parity-forbidden f — f transitions. Yttrium anadate has strong absorption bands beyond -1000A. These are clue to Y-O, V-O charge transfer and molecular transitions. Under 2537 and 3660A irradiation pure YVO, fluroresces u bright yel-LOLO. This fli&orescence is corrzpletely quenched in YV04:Ncl crystals. This and other evidence of energy trut~sjer from the lattice is repovted. Optzcul atz 1user pvope 1-ties o! YI'U4:E[t are brieJy described. THIS paper describes some of the optical and laser properties of Nd+3- and Eu+3-doped yttrium orthovana-date (YVO4). It reports laser action for the first time in this low-symmetry host. For some time we have pursued a research program concerning laser hosts' wherein the rare-earth (RE) ion is situated at a site of low crystal symmetry so as to increase the probability of radiative transitions. Single crystals of doped and undoped YV04 are grown from iridium crucibles in an oxyhydrogen gas-fired furnace by a modified Czochralski technique.' This material crystallizes in a D4li tetragonal space group of the zircon (ZrSiO,) type.3 All RE vanadates have the same structure and form solid solutions with YVO4. Therefore, it will be possible to investigate a variety of cross-pumped laser systems, as in the case of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG).4 At present, ~d'~-doped YAG is one of the most efficient solid-state lasers.5 Accordingly, most of the material to follow will compare the properties of YV04 to those of YAG. Fig. 1 shows the relative transmission of YAG and two types of YVO4. "Pure" YVO4 has a normal absorption edge and is colorless. A second type has a broad absorption peaking near 4200A and is yellow. Rubin and Van uitert6 suggest the yellow material is slightly reduced. Samples of each type are being investigated by electron spin resonance,7 but these studies are so far inconclusive. The pulsed laser threshold is much lower in the yellow material than in the colorless. Therefore, the absorption at 3500 to 5000.4 transfers energy to the Ndi3 ions. Photons of wave length between 2000 and 4500A cause undoped YVO4 to fluoresce at 4800, 5250, 5460, 5540, and 5750A. This emission, previously reported by Brixner and Abramsom,8 is partially quenched by EU'~ and completely quenched by Ndt3 at room temperature due to energy transfer from the lattice to the RE ions. At low temperatures, some lattice fluorescence is present. This implies that the energy-transfer process is in part phonon-assisted. Although the YVO, single crystals used in this work were prepared from Y2O3 containing less than 0.01 pct rare-earth impurities, there is aopossibility that emission lines between 4800 and 5750A are due to dysprosium, terbium, and so forth. However, these lines are not observed in other compounds, prepared from Y2O3, such as YP04, Y2MoO6, and so forth. Furthermore, extensive absorption measurements on our "pure" YV04 single crystals between 0.4 and 5.0 failed to reveal any characteristic rare-earth lines. Fig. 2 compares the absorption spectra of Ndt3-doped YAG and YVO4from 0.6 to 1.0 . The Ndt3 absorptions are labeled according to free ion, R-S coupling. These term designationsQ are appropriate for YAG:Nd. They appear to be inappropriate for YV04:Nd. In YVO, neodymium must substitute for yttrium. The yttrium site is situated In a strong tetragonal field, where point symmetry is (42m) or possibly lower.1° However, the reduced splitting of the Stark components of the YV0,:Nd spectrum implies that the NdT3 ion is in a cubic site. The only plausible explanation for this discrepancy is that the Ndt3 ion is in a low-symmetry site, lacking inversion symmetry, so that a substantial admixture of 4f and 5d wave functions occurs. In this case, R-S coupling is not valid and J is no longer a good quantum number." Consistent with this view, the 4~ metastable level of YV04:Nd has an oscillator strength larger and a

In the last ten years large gains have been made in the field of blasting. These gains have been both in the theoretical and in the practical application of explosives. One of the most publicized changes in the practical application of commercial explosives is the now-prevalent use of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. The new water-compatible mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT should also have a large field of application. Most of the theoretical gains have been concerned with the actual rock breakage obtained with explosives. In the last ten years, large gains have been made in the field of blasting. These gains have been both in the theoretical and in the practical application of explosives. One of the most publicized changes in the practical application of commercial explosives is the now prevalent use of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. The new water-compatible mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT should also have a large field of application. Most of the theoretical gains have been concerned with the actual rock breakage obtained with explosives. EXPANDING-GAS-BUBBLE THEORY There has been an outstanding change in the conception of how an explosive produces rock failure. The early theory which explained rock breakage was correct for some of the first force-producing agents such as quicklime. When a drillhole was filled with quicklime and water added, the material expanded and steam was generated. The expanding material and the steam exerted a slowly increasing pressure on the sides of the drillhole. The force broke the rock by splitting. Because a great quantity of gas was produced by the deflagration of gunpowder, the same process of the gas pressure splitting the rock was assumed to take place. Even after 80 years of use, the rock-breaking action of all high explosives was thought to be caused entirely by the expanding gas bubble which tore and split the rock. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through an exploding spherical charge of high explosive. It illustrates the early theory which attributed the entire breakage to the expanding gas bubble. The basic idea of this theory is that the breakage started at the explosive charge and progressed toward the free face. REFLECTED-WAVE THEORY me expanding-gas- bubble theory has gradually been replaced by the reflected-wave theory. The reflected-wave theory explains rock failure by explosives in the following manner: The enormously high gas pressure in the drillhole produces fracturing of the rock on the sides of the drillhole. The fracturing around a 1 1/2-in. diam drillhole is usually confined to an area with about a 6-in. diam. In the fractured area, the pressure of the gas is reduced until the force on the walls is no longer capable of fracturing the rock. Although the gas pressure does not continue to fracture the rock, the pressure imposes a high impact stress on the wall rock. In addition, a pressure or seismic pulse is produced in the rock. The pulse is probably entirely a compression pulse when originally produced in the rock. But, with distance, part of the energy of the compression pulse is transformed into a tension pulse which follows the compression pulse. The explosive charges and burdens used in conventional mine blasting are such that the tension pulse of the original wave is probably too small to be considered in a practical evaluation of the theory. The compression pulse is transmitted through the rock with no associated fracturing.

The analyses given in Table I. were made several years ago at my request at a plant using Lake ores. They are of two furnaces, one making basic, the other Bessemer pig— they gave 6 casts each in 24 hr., also two flushes of cinder between each cast. They are offered simply for the sake of reference as, so far as I know, it is unusual to find so frequent full analyses made and none are on record. The variations in manganese-content in the first and second flushes on the basic furnace are interesting, if no more than a freak—the first flush being invariably higher in manganese. The iron-content of the two slags from an average of 12 flushes shows: Basic. Bessemer. Per Cent. Per Cent. Total iron...................................... 2.85 1.70 Combined iron................................ 0.72 0.52 Free iron....................................... 2.13 1.18 The greater iron-loss in the basic slag, while known, has never heretofore been so clearly set forth. This may modify the arrangement for handling slag; heretofore usually determined by proximity of the dumping-heap. If a nearby heap is used on contiguous territory, in the past, tilting molten-slag pots were used. If the Pittsburg flood-records for 30 years are a fair criterion the government regulations were inadequate, and molten slag was dumped in such a manner as to throttle the Monongahela at the time of the spring thaws. At Pittsburg the slag, where it is carried to a distance, is frequently granulated in pits and then removed in cars to which it is conveyed by clam-shell buckets. This practice is also quite customary where the slag is intended for the manufacture of slag cement. The production of 500 tons of cast-iron daily means about 300 tons of- slag and at 2.113 per cent. equals 6.4 tons

The coal lands that the Nemacolin mine is to develop embrace over 8400 acres; the tract is oblong and its eastern edge is along the Monon-gahela river. As shown in Fig. 1, the mine is divided into two parts (the North mine and the South mine) by a 150-ft. barrier, which however, is cut through at intervals by haulageways. Each part is fed from seven main entries—a loaded track, an empty, a manway, and four return air courses. The loaded tracks converge at the shaft bottom but the empty roads maintain their identity throughout their length. With three intakes and four returns on either side, there is ample room for expansion of air and every facility for ventilating is provided. The four south air courses converge into two, crossing the shaft bottom, and then into one at the south side of the air shaft. THE pottery of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) is equipped to make three classes of refractories; namely, spelter vessels, spelter condensers; and high-grade fire-brick. The most important of these are the spelter vessels, on account of the extreme severity of the service which they must perform, necessitating great care in the selection of materials and in the whole process of manufacture. Next to the spelter vessels in importance? come the condensers, as large numbers are used in the manufacture of spelter, and improvements m quality result in material decreases in working cost. , While the fire-brick which form the laboratory, or high-temperature portion of the spelter furnaces, are placed at the foot of the list, they-are nevertheless of much importance, since high quality will decrease the frequency of the always expensive shutdowns for repairs. To promote simplicity, the manufacture of these three products will be described separately in this paper, except in so far as materials and the crushing and handling system common to all are concerned. Materials Bond Clay.-The bond clay used entirely at the Palmerton pottery is a St. Louis clay furnished by the Grand View Fire Clay Co. It is stored in a system of covered bins, and no attempt is made to weather -it in the, accepted sense of the term " weathering." Some years ago our clay was weathered before pugging, but we did not find the benefit sufficient to offset the additional handling and the loss. of clay incurred. Furthermore, we believe that the rotting of the pugged mix (described later), accomplishes the same results to better advantage. That there is some action taking place in the clay while stored in the covered bins, however, is, evidenced by an increase in volume which at times has caused damage to the retaining walls of the bins. We have at present a stock of bond clay weathering in the open, and when this is put into service an opportunity will be afforded for making comparisons-with the clay as usually handled.

The first use of graphite is lost in the mists of time. It was used by primitive man to make drawings on the walls of caves and by the Egyptians to decorate pottery. As early as 1400 A.D. graphite crucibles were being made in the Haffnerzell district of Bavaria. Through the Middle Ages graphite was confused with other minerals, especially galena and molybdenite. Two common names that are still used for the mineral are "Plumbago," meaning leadlike, and "Black Lead." The latter name implied that graphite is either composed of lead or at least contains a large percentage of it. Gessner is credited with having recognized it as a separate mineral in 1565, but its composition was not determined until 1779, when Scheele demonstrated that graphite oxidized to carbon dioxide, thus proving its carbon constitution. In 1789, Werner named it "graphite" from the Greek word "graphein," meaning to write. The United States has long relied on foreign countries for its graphite supplies. This reliance has been due more to the lack of suitable domestic graphites than to any particular preference for buying minerals overseas. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) graphites were imported as early as 1820, and Madagascar graphites have been imported since the properties on that island were opened up about a hundred years later. Mexico has long supplied the United States with most of its requirements for amorphous graphite. Physical Properties and Classification Graphite is found in laminated, flaky aggregates disseminated in schistose rocks. It also occurs in veins and exhibits a foliated or fibrous structure. Graphite is a black lustrous mineral that crystallizes in the hexagonal system, with rhombohedral symmetry. The crystals have tabular form and are six-sided; the faces are commonly striated. The flakes have perfect basal cleavage and are opaque. When well crystallized, the flakes have a black metallic luster while the amorphous material is black and earthy, with a microcrystalline compactness. The flakes feel greasy. Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It melts at approximately 3550°C at a triple point under 1250 psi. It sublimes between 3300-3500°C at 14.7 psi. At 3726°C a second triple point occurs at approximately 100,000 atmospheres. Thermal oxidation in the presence of oxygen begins at 300°C and the rate increases with temperature. The three forms of carbon (charcoal, graphite, and diamond) are distinguished by chemical and physical tests. The specific gravity of charcoal is 1.3 to 1.9, of graphite 2.266 g/ cm3 (crystal density), and of diamond 3.5. Graphite has a hardness of 1 to 2 (Mohs' scale). Natural graphite can be divided into three classes: disseminated flake, crystalline vein (fibrous or columnar), and amorphous. Flake graphite is a lamellar form found in metamorphic rocks, such as marble, gneiss, and schist. Each flake is separate, having crystallized as such in the rock. Crystalline vein graphite is found in the form of well defined veins or as pocket accumulations along the intrusive contacts of pegmatites with limestones. The graphite of such deposits is of two types, foliated and columnar. The important Sri Lanka (Ceylon) deposits are vein type. Amorphous graphite is commonly found as minute microcrystalline particles more or less uniformly distributed in feebly metamorphic rocks, such as slates and shales, or in beds consisting practically entirely of graphite. The latter usually are metamorphosed coal seams and carry as much as 80-85% graphitic carbon, while the former, being altered carbonaceous sediments, commonly range from 25 to 60%

Until a comparatively few years ago, interest in tantalum was limited almost wholly to its scientific investigation, but its extreme resistance to the action of even the strong mineral acids, its great avidity for the common gases, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, and its capacity for transforming alternating to direct current are winning for it a place in our industrial life. Tantalum is not attacked by any single acid except hydrpfluoric, nor is it affected by solutions of alkalies. Aqua regia, which readily dissolves both platinum and gold, has no action on it. This resistance to the common corrosive agents is an outstanding property of tantalum and accounts for many of the applications to which it has been put. When heated, tantalum reacts readily with oxygen and nitrogen and absorbs large volumes of hydrogen, 740 volumes being taken up at a dull red heat. This capacity for absorbing gases is being utilized to an increasing extent in the manufacture of vacuum tubes, in which tantalum is used for the metal parts, especially for grid wire. It is said to be a superior metal for this purpose, particularly in power and sending tubes, because of its low secondary emission. The use of tantalum in the manufacture of electrodes, dishes, spatulas and other laboratory apparatus appears to be fairly steady. There has been some development in its use for dental instruments, surgical tools, pen points, hypodermic needles and acid-proof pumps. Recently it has been used in the manufacture of spinnerets for the rayon industry, of nozzles for the manufacture of artificial casings for sausages and of lining for plant equipment. Tantalum in Electrolysis It has been known for some time that certain substances permit the passage of an alternating current in one direction more readily than in the other. This paper is concerned with the details of the derivation of an operations research model, specifically linear programming, to solve production scheduling problems. While some results are presented for an actual study, the calculation of cases of a more general nature have not yet been completed. Production managers from those segments of the mining industry that experience a seasonal or highly variable sales demand find it rather difficult to develop overall producing plans for their organizations. In an attempt to solve this technical problem, demands are usually met by keeping production corresponding exactly to sales. This results in a fluctuating production schedule which is costly to maintain because of overtime premiums in periods of high requirements and because of costs associated with an idle mine plant during slack periods. An alternate solution may be to produce part of the desired amount and make up any deficiencies by using overproduction in previous time periods. This tends to smooth the production pattern through the use of a stockpile. However, because of associated storage costs, the solution may again be undesirable if it yields comparatively large surpluses. In general, this type of scheduling problem has an infinite number of solutions which satisfy the requirements. These are largely dependent on the extent to which an operation is geared to changes in production and on the size of its stockpiling facility. The determination of an efficient schedule is implied, therefore, as one lying between two extreme solutions, i.e., one that minimizes surpluses and one that minimizes output fluctuations. These conflicting objectives result in an economic balance problem between the costs of carrying surpluses forward from slack periods versus the cost of high production levels during peak demands. Various methods of operations research have been developed to handle problems whose genesis is explained above. It is very seldom, however, that these quantitative means are used in practice by the mining industry. Those who are familiar with mining operations know that most managers have not progressed satisfactorily in this area. Production planning systems which most mines employ today are often no more than rough records of management's mental planning. For small mines these means are normally sufficient; but as operations grow larger and become more complex, this type of planning ability is no longer adequate. Managers may find themselves losing control of cost relationships, taking longer to outline production sequences, and becoming forgetful of certain resource availabilities. ORIGIN AND SCOPE OF A SCHEDULING PROBLEM The more fundamental aspects of the production scheduling problem can be brought into focus by demonstrating how it exists in a bituminous coal mine* located in southwestern Pennsylvania. This mine, operating in the Pittsburgh seam, uses a definite room-and-pillar block system of mining, which is planned and carried out with only slight variations to meet local conditions. The coal seam, which is firm and varying in thickness from 8 to 9 ft with the bottom 6% ft being extracted, is under 500 ft of cover and opened by a shaft. The bulk of the coal (60%) is obtained from the pillaring activity with the mains and sections, which are considered primarily as development activities, contributing the balance of 12% and 28%, respectively. All coal is won by a ripper-type continuous miner in conjunction with shuttle-cars directly behind a loading machine. Track haulage is employed to move coal from these machine centers to the shaft bottom. The coal, thus mined, is shipped to one destination as part of a mixture of coals to be used in the making of steel. A material flow diagram of this distribution scheme is illustrated in Fig. 1. PROBLEM STATEMENT From the above types of shipments and mining limitations, the basic problem is to determine an economic means of producing and stockpiling a single coal product produced in three different machine centers (main, section, and pillar). The dihedral angle, formed by the intersection of three interfaces, is often determined by measuring a sample of apparent angles of intersection seen on a random plane of polish, then comparing the exerimental distribution of angles to the distribution calculated by Harker and Parker. Statistical tests show that the latter distribution does not satisfactorily describe the population from which samples are drawn. It is concluded that the major reason for this discrepancy is the presence of a range of dihedral angles in all specimens. When reasonable care is used experimentally, random measuring error is unimportant. It is shown that measurements made on dispersed second-phase inclusions are subject to a systematic error depending on inclusion size, which can be minimized by using adequate magnification. A dihedral angle, calculated from a sample of observed angles as though a unique dihedral angle were present, is termed an "effective dihedral angle". Experience has shown that "effective dihedral angles'' are reproducible quantities, useful for characterizing samples. Methods of determining an "effective dihedral angle", establishing its reliability, and making comparisons between samples are discussed. THE authors have recently reported measurements of the dihedral angle formed by liquid-lead inclusions lying in nickel grain boundaries.' Di- hedral angles were measured by the statistical method first employed by Harker and parker2 and used subsequently by many other workers.3"8 Since a relatively high degree of accuracy was necessary in the authors' experiments, the reliability of this method of dihedral-angle measurement was examined. Briefly, this method of measuring dihedral angles is usually performed as follows. A multiphase alloy is prepared, equilibrated under conditions which allow sufficient interface mobility to establish equilibrium, quenched to room temperature, then prepared for metallographic examination. A large number of observed angles, formed by the traces of grain boundaries and/or interphase boundaries on the plane of polish, are measured at high magnification. If all orientations of interfaces in the specimen are equally probable, Harker and parker2 showed that the population of observed angles is described by a distribution function containing a single parameter, the dihedral angle, 8. certain properties of the population, e.g., the mode or median, have been calculated from this distribution function in terms of the dihedral angle.3, 9 Thus, if the mode or median of a sample is identified with the corresponding property of the population, a unique value for the dihedral angle is determined. One defect in this procedure lies in identifying the properties of a sample of observed angles with the properties of the population from which they are drawn. If one were to proceed in a more rigorous fashion, it would be necessary to find a function of sample properties which is an estimator of the dihedral angle. Then by determining the distribution function for the estimator one could set limits on the value of the dihedral angle. The most apparent obstacle to this straightforward approach is the complexity of the distribution function assumed to describe the population.
