THE first authentic description of an iron bath for the deposition of iron is probably that of Bottger in 1846, who used a bath containing ferrous sulfate and ammonium chloride. In 1861, Kramer deposited iron from ferrous chloride solution. Electrolytic iron was produced in 1.869 by Bietz, who used it for making some magnetic tests. In the same year, Klein is said to have worked out his process. Jacobi1 in 1869 described the results obtained in electroplating with iron on copper for making dies and plates for bank notes, by Klein's process. A letter from Klein to Jacobi describes the bath more fully. It consisted of FeSO4 + (NH4)2S04. Lenz2 described ?some properties of electrolytically precipitated iron. He used Klein's bath, FeSO4 + MgSO4 + MgCO3, to neutralize and obtained fine-grained and hard iron. His conclusions were as follows: 1. Electrolytic iron and copper contain gases, notably hydrogen. 2. The volume of gas absorbed by iron varies within wide limits, but it is easy for iron to take up very considerable quantities of gas. 3. The absorption of gas is principally in the first formed layers of iron. 4. When iron is heated, gas begins to come off below 100°, principally hydrogen. 5. Heated to redness, reduced iron oxidizes in water, in part at least at the expense of the oxygen of the water, decomposing it and setting free hydrogen, which is partly or wholly absorbed. Siemens,3 in 1889, was the first to propose a general process embodying a step for leaching a sulfide mineral with ferric chloride or sulfate and a step for regenerating the leach and depositing iron on a cathode in a diaphragm cell. THIS Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig. 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia. It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. It also present, several theories on the action of explosives in this type of blasting. [ ] The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends downward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break clown the rock in large blocks.

In Europe, water infusion is used widely to reduce generation of respirable dust during mining. Its use in the US is limited to a few plow operations in the deeper parts of the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed. The technology for infusing water into retreating longwalls is described and results of a recent Bureau test in the Lower Sunnyside Coalbed demonstrated dust reductions ranging from 47% to 64%. Because water infusion increases moisture content of the coalbed, face air velocities in excess of 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) are possible, further diluting dust levels before dust entrainment occurs. An economic analysis shows a 23% reduction in operating costs when coal production is increased by changing from unidirectional to bidirectional mining with water infusion.

Presence of hot water brought on by volcanic action nearby has severely complicated mining in the Limon gold mine in Nicaragua. Routine pumping problems have been multiplied and ventilation is a major problem. Enclosing rock is so hot that 20 pct of all power generated at the mine is consumed by forced ventilation. But hot water underground, however disagreeable and troublesome, may be handled and surmounted like any other difficulty if the estimated profit margin permits. Empresa Minera de Nicaragua's Limon mine is a 400-ton gold-silver producer located in western Nicaragua about 60 miles northwest of the capital city, Managua, and some 45 miles from the Nicaragua-Honduras border. Limon is situated in a low- lying district with a nearby chain of active and semi-active Tertiary volcanoes.

IT is an outstanding fact of Nature that many of the practical properties of substances are dependent, not on their ultimate chemical composition, but on the kind and degree of aggregation of their constituent particles. Thus, a granite boulder is unmoved by wind or water, but if reduced to a fine dust it will be blown about by the wind and washed away by the rain. Carbon in one crystalline state of aggregation (diamond) is the hardest known substance, whereas in another crystalline state (graphite) it is so soft that it is used as a lubricant. Laying too much stress on the mere chemical analysis of substances is apt to obscure the fact that the nature of the aggregation of their particles is always a factor of importance, and sometimes the most important factor. Colloid chemistry deals with matter in. a very fine state of subdivision; its sphere begins with particles just a little smaller than a wave length of light-and extends clown until they blend into molecular dimensions. With particles of this size; such phenomena as surface tension and adsorption, which depend on the development of free surface, become enormously magnified. Thus a cube of 1 cm. edge has a surface of only 6 sq. cm.; but if it is reduced to colloidal dimensions by being cut up into cubes each having an edge of 0.01 , (0.00001 mm.), it will yield one million, million, million (1,000,000,000,000,000,000) such cubes, having a combined area of 600 sq. in., or 21,274 sq. ft. The tiny force with which a drop of rain clings to the window pane becomes a. factor to be reckoned with, if the surface involved is increased millions of times. From the colloid-chemical viewpoint, metals and alloys may be regarded as jellies or sponge-like structures, the viscosity or stiffness of which at ordinary temperatures is exceedingly great; and like all jellies their properties are dependent on the composition and degree of dispersion of their constituent phases. The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. Soon after the initiation in Belgium, the process was introduced into England, where subsequent, investigation developed similar processes, which were successfully used in

The author maintains that selectivity in flotation depends in part on differences in rates of flotation. The rate of flotation should be directly proportional to the frequency of particle-bubble collisions. In this paper, it is suggested that floatable particles of the mineral must be distinguished from nonfloatable particles. Success in flotation is entirely a matter of selectivity. All minerals can be made to float. The problem is to make one mineral float and leave the others in the tails. For a typical ore, with all minerals naturally hydro-philic, a collector which is adsorbed by only one mineral and not at all by the others would give perfect separations. The hydrophobic, collector-coated mineral would separate cleanly from the remaining minerals. In practice, no such highly specific reagents are known. All standard collectors adsorb on most minerals to some extent, and selectivity then becomes a matter of extent of adsorption rather than adsorption on some minerals and not on others. Flotation is therefore a compromise process: if enough reagent is used to float all the desired mineral, the concentrate will be low grade; conversely, high grade concentrates can be attained only at low recovery. With many minerals coated with collector to varying degrees, selectivity appears to depend in part on each mineral floating at a different rate. The study of flotation kinetics is therefore a basic requirement to quantitative understanding of the process. The Alligator Ridge Project is owned jointly by Amselco Minerals Inc. and Occidental Minerals, with Amselco being the operator. It is the latest of Nevada' s gold heap leaching operations , having gone into operation in October of 1980 after a design and construction period of only seven and one-half months. Alligator Ridge is located about 77 km (48 miles) northwest of Ely, Nevada. Three separate but adjacent ore bodies will be mined: Vantage I, II and III. The first lies virtually at the surface and is totally oxidized; the second is somewhat deeper and contains some carbonaceous material; and the third is at the lowest horizon and contains substantial carbonaceous ore. The ore is a Carlin- type siltstone which has been silicified, especially at depth, and contains finely disseminated free gold. Exploration drilling on Alligator Ridge resulted in the defining of an ore reserve of about 4.54 million mt (5 million st) averaging 4. 12 g Au per mt (0. 12 oz Au per st). A pilot heap leaching program was run during 1979. Because of the high content of fine material in portions of the ore body, one test heap of 5,000 tons was leached, after being crushed to 19 mm (314 in.), in the conventional manner using cyanide and caustic while a second heap of 2,500 tons of ore was agglomerated with cement before leaching. Results of this work were reported at the 1980 American Mining Congress meeting by Paul Chamberlin (see Bibliography). The test work clearly indicated the superior leaching qualities of the agglomerated ore, and the plant was designed on this basis. Run-of-mine ore is crushed in an open-air crushing plant using a jaw crusher followed by two cone crushers, one standard and one shorthead. Provision was made to bypass the shorthead when the ore is wet from rain or snow. Crushed ore at 19 mm (314 in.) size is mixed with cyanide solution and cement, with the ratio of the latter to the ore being 2 to 5 kg per mt (4 to 10 lb per st). The resulting moisture content is about 870, and the fines are effectively bound to the coarse particles so that migration of the fines in the heap does not take place during leaching. For agglomeration, Amselco uses a rotating drum 2. 75 m 0 by 6 m long (9 ft 6 by 20 ft). For the same agglomeration, Candelaria uses three "grasshopper" conveyors, with introduction of caustic- cyanide solution at the conveyor transfer points. Provision was made for future addition of cement slurry at these same points.

The oxidation rates of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopy-rite, chalcocite, covellite, bortzite, galem, sphalerite, and stibnite have beet2 carefully compared at 120 oC, using aqueous phosphate solutions buffered at pH 2.7, 7.1, and 11.2 as zvell as in 1.0 M NaOH and in am~onia-containing solutions. Under conditions of these studies, variations in rates of more than a factor of two per unit of mineral surface area were not observed for different minerals in phosphate buffered solutions, except that pyrrhotite showed unusually rapid oxidation rates In acid solutions, and stibnite showed very rapid oxidation rates in basic solutions. In caustic solutions, oxidation vates varied considerably, the most rapid being for pyrite and the slowest for sphalerite. In the presence of ammonia, only copper minerals showed more vapid oxidation rates in neutral solutions. Oxidation rates were measured on the basis of oxygen-consunzption rates per unit surface area of exposed mineral, using equivalent surface areas, mineral mesh sizes, pulp densities, agitation, and oxygen pressure. OXIDIZING pressure leaching of sulfide minerals has been a commercial method of treating concentrates of nickel, cobalt, and copper for over a decade, and recently the treatment of lead and zinc concentrates,' and even the recovery of sulfur from pyrrhotite by such processes, have been shown to be technically feasible.' Furthermore, the leaching of uranium ores by solutions acidified through the oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides present in the ore is commercially practicable.3 5 The mechanisms by which sulfide minerals oxidize in aqueous environments are not yet understood. However, certain generalities can be made for systems containing no unusual reagents, in which oxygen is the oxidizing agent. In acid solutions the oxidation of many sulfide minerals leads to the formation of elemental sulfur.8'7 The attack of some sulfides, notably galena (PbS), sphalerite (ZnS), and pyrrhotite (FeS), at temperatures below about 110°C leads to an almost quantitative conversion of the sulfide mineral to elemental sulfur according to the equation: On the other hand pyrite (FeS2) and copper minerals do not yield elemental sulfur quantitatively. Not more than 50 pct of the sulfur in pyrite is converted to the elemental form in acid oxidation, and this percentage is lowered by higher temperatures and possibly higher oxygen pressures.8'9 Copper minerals sometimes yield elemental sulfurlo'" but, since sulfur can reduce cupric ions with the precipitation of CuS or Cu2S, it is not likely that elemental sulfur is obtained in good yield. In acid solutions sulfur that is not converted to the elemental form always appears as sulfate salts or sulfuric acid. Sulfide minerals that yield elemental sulfur nearly quantitatively on oxidation in acid solutions tend to generate H2S when the conditions are not oxidizing. However, although it has been suggested that H2S is an essential intermediate in the mechanism of oxidation," this is doubtful because it is oxidized very slowly by oxygen. In basic solutions elemental sulfur is never formed, as predicted by thermodynamical considerations, summarized in the form of a potential-pH diagram in Fig. 1. However in neutral and basic solutions, unstable forms of sulfur not shown in the diagram appear during oxidation, notably thiosulfate (SOT-) and polythi-onates (S,O;-, x = 2 to 6).l3,l4 On prolonged oxidation only hexavalent sulfur as sulfate (SOi-) or sulfamate (NHzSO;) is found to remain, the latter appearing only in the presence of ammonia. The oxidation kinetics for thiosulfate by oxygen are the subject of a separate paper,'5 and were studied on the presumption that thiosulfate may, in fact, be a primary oxidation product for sulfide minerals, at least in neutral and basic solutions. A survey of the literature indicated that comparative oxidation rates for different sulfide minerals were needed to establish the role of the mineral structure and its thermodynamic properties on the oxidation rates and mechanisms.

BLAST furnaces are most efficient thermally when the C02 in the top gas is highest. Oxygen introduced in the air blast is converted to CO in the combustion zones. The extent to which CO, generated in front of the tuyères, is converted later to C02 depends upon the ratio of ore to coke in the charge and the degree to which C02, formed by reduction of iron oxides with CO, reverts to CO by the secondary reaction C + C02 = 2C0. About 300 to 400 lb. of carbon1 per ton of pig iron is normally involved in the solution-loss reaction or direct reduction of FeO with carbon, which produces the same over-all results; that is, lower C02 in the top gas. Riche has recently reported a reduction in fuel consumption at slower rates of blowing on two furnaces in spite of higher heat losses per ton of iron. Lower fuel consumption at slow operating rates was due to more complete reduction of the ore that resulted in higher C02 in the top gas and consequently more efficient use of carbon. Kinney3 has reported substantial savings in fuel as a result of crushing and sizing the ore charge. Improvements in practice brought about by sintering magnetite concentrates, flue dust and fine ores have been due to the establishment of conditions favoring more complete reduction of the ore in the upper part of the furnace. The extent to which oxides and fluctuations in composition in pig iron affect the quality of steel and finished product needs further study. There is evidence that more thorough preheating and reduction of the ore in the upper part of the furnace tend to give a better quality of iron. A new logging method has been developed, based on measurement of the nuclear magnetism of formation fluids. The nuclear magnetism log (NML) is the only log that responds solely to formation fluids. It operates equally well in both oil-base and water-base muds and in empty holes, and can be used in all kinds of formations except strongly magnetic ones. Two separate NML measurements can be made, one of which provides a continuous formation fluid curve. This fluid curve is called the free fluid log (FFL) and is believed to indicate a minimum effective porosity in most formations. The FFL not only delineates fluid-containing zones, but provides an excellent correlation curve that can be obtained under conditions where conventional correlation logs are ineffective. Preliminary tests indicate that the second kind of NML measurement may help distinguish oil and water zones and provide information concerning permeability and wettability. (The FFL itself appears to provide some information on permeability.) The second kind of NML measurement requires stopping the logging tool for a short time opposite a zone of interest and taking more extensive NML data that can be displayed as nuclear magnetic relaxation curves. In some instances, oil and water saturations for the region immediately adjacent to the borehole can be read from these relaxation curves. INTRODUCTION In 1946, Bloch, Hansen and Packard and Purcell, Torrey and Pound3 independently announced the successful demonstration of the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance. During the past 13 years, there have been many applications of nuclear magnetic resonance, including applications to the study of chemical structure and to the measurement of magnetic field strengths. Preliminary experiments on the feasibility of using nuclear magnetism measurements in well logging were made independently by California Research Corp. and Varian Assoc., the Varian work being sponsored by the Byron Jackson Tools, Inc. Since then a cooperative research program on nuclear magnetism logging has been carried out by the Byron Jackson Div. and Research Center of Borg-Warner Corp., and California Research Corp., subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California. The use of nuclear magnetism in well logging is of special interest because it offers a way of making direct measurements on the hydrogen in the formation fluids and not on the rock matrix. Within the past 1 1/2 years, successful measurements have been made with a research model logging tool in wells in California, Tex as, Utah, Louisiana and Wyoming. NUCLEAR MAGNETISM SIGNALS Polarization, Relaxation and Precession Many atomic nuclei possess magnetic moments and spins; that is, they are similar in some respects to bar-magnet and gyroscope combinations. Molecules and their nuclei are subject to thermal motion, which has a scrambling effect, tending to leave as many nuclear spins oriented in any one direction as in any other. However, if a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic nuclei tend to align in the direction of the field. The scrambling and aligning forces compete with each other, with the result that a few more spins are oriented parallel to the field than in other directions. This gives a net magnetization, or polarization, which is directly proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field (aligning influence) and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature (scrambling influence). When the magnetic field in, or temperature of, a liquid sample containing protons is changed, the new equilibrium value of proton polarization is not established immediately but requires an amount of time which depends on the nature of the hydrogen-containing materials. The process of approaching the equilibrium value of polarization is called relaxation.'.' Polarization is a vector quantity, and the components parallel to and perpendicular to the magnetic field must be considered separately. Relaxation of the component parallel to the field is called "thermal relaxation", or "longitudinal relaxation", and the corresponding time for this component of non-equilibrium polarization to decay by a factor of e (natural log base) is denoted T. The relaxation of the perpendicular component is called "transverse relaxation", and the corresponding relaxation time is denoted T,. The potential energy of a magnet in a uniform field depends on the angle the magnet makes with the field; therefore, a change of the component of net polarization parallel to the magnetic field involves an exchange of energy between the spin system and the thermal motion of the molecules, leading to the term thermal relaxation for the relaxation of this component. The device here described has been found useful in sampling foundry-iron, and there is no reason why it should not be equally useful in sampling other metals, which are not too hard to be drilled with a breast-drill. It consists, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of an ordinary plumber's gas T (without bead) of about 1/2-inch in internal diameter, over the leg of which is snugly fitted a small tin cup, about If inches deep, to catch the drillings which are made by use of a breast-drill with a 1/4-inch twist bit, working through the arms of the T. The forward arm of the T is filed down to a blunt edge, over which is stretched a short piece of rubber tubing projecting a little beyond the end. The bottom of the inside of the front arm of the ? is filed down to a slope, to facilitate the passage of drillings into the tin cup. The rear arm of the T is fitted with a tin ring, projecting about 1/4-inch, for the purpose of holding in place a stiff spiral brass spring, which serves to press the sampler firmly against the metal to be drilled. The other end of the spring is supported against a shoulder of the breastdrill. The projecting rubber prevents the loss of any drillings, and also the falling of sand from above into the sampler. With ordinary care there need be no risk of getting particles of rubber into the sample. It is, of course, not possible to get a fair average sample of drillings, representing a pile of foundry-iron, by taking drillings from any one or two pieces, because of the frequently mixed character of the iron. This observation applies more particularly to the sampling of iron as it is broken and piled at the foundry, than to sampling at the works, where, if the furnace is working regularly, a few pigs may fairly represent a whole cast. A homogeneous and uniform cylindrical reservoir containing oil and gas is fractured vertically on completion and is produced at a constant bottom-hole pressure. The fracture has an infinite flow capacity, is of limited lateral extent and is bounded above and below by the impermeable strata defining the vertical extent of the reservoir. Results show that such a fractured reservoir can be represented by a reservoir of circular symmetry having very nearly the same production history. The well radius of this circular reservoir is about 1/4 the fracture length and is essentially the same as that obtained previously for a single fluid of constant compressibility. At the same value of cumulative oil production, gas-oil ratios of fractured reservoirs producing at constant terzinal pressure are larger than those of reservoirs having no fractures. This leads to more inefficient use of the reservoir energy in fractured wells and results in lower reservoir pressures for the same cumulative oil production. The reduction in operating life due to fracturing a reservoir is not as great as that for a slightly compressible fluid. This diflerence can be accounted for by the lower reservoir pressure in the fractured reservoir and its adverse effect on the average mobility and compressibility of the oil. As anticipated, the reduction in operating life increases czs the reservoir permeability decreases. The type of results presented in this report can be used to determine the economic attractiveness of fracture treatments per se, to setect the initial spacing to be used in developing a field, and to compare the relative merits of fracturing available wells and infill drilling. INTRODUCTION The effect of vertical fractures on a reservoir producing either an incompressible or a compressible liquid has already been discussed in the 1iterature.l,2 Those results indicate that the production history of such a reservoir is essentially the same as that of a circular reservoir having an effective well radius of approximately one-fourth the fracture length. The present work reports on the effect of a vertical fracture on a reservoir producing two compressible fluids —oil and gas—by solution gas drive. Because of the empirical nature of the PVT and relative permeability data used to obtain the performance of such reservoirs, results can only be obtained numerically and with the aid of high-speed computers. Since reservoirs lose their radial symmetry when fractured vertically, pressure and saturation can no longer be given only in terms of distance from the well. Two coordinates (such as x and y) must now be used to describe the pressure and saturation within the reservoir, and, since we are dealing with compressible fluids, time is also a variable. Thus the solution of a vertically fractured reservoir requires finding two unknowns (pressure and saturation) in two space variables (say x and y) and in time (t). Since no means are readily and generally available for solving such problems at the present time, we have used the results of previous work1,2 to approximate the effect of a vertical fracture on a reservoir producing both oil and gas by depletion. The purpose of the present wmk, then, is to investigate the possibility of using available numerical techniques (limited at the moment to one space variable) to study the two-space-variable flow behavior resulting from a vertical fracture. Results obtained in the course of this investigation are also reported and discussed. Input and output data of the numerical methods used are given in practical units: BOPD, feet, psi, cp, and md. Results are discussed fist in terms of specific reservoir and crude properties and geometries. Later, dimensionless parameters are introduced in order to extend results to different values of some of the reservoir and fracture properties. IDEALIZATION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE FRACTURED SYSTEM It is assumed that a horizontal oil-producing layer of constant thickness and of uniform porosity and permeability is bounded above and below by impermeable strata. The reservoir has an impermeable, circular, cylindrical outer boundary of radius r,. The fracture system is represented by a single, plane, vertical fracture of limited radial extent, bounded by the impermeable matrix above and below' the producing layer (reservoir). It is assumed that there is no pressure drop in the fracture due to fluid flow. 1 indicates the general three-dimensional geometry of the fractured reservoir. Diatomite is a siliceous, sedimentary rock consisting principally of the fossilized skeletal remains of the diatom, a unicellular aquatic plant related to the algae. Thus, it has-been formed by the induration of diatomaceous ooze, and consists mainly of diatomaceous silica, a form or variety of opal which is first formed in the cell walls of the living diatom. Diatomaceous silica is not generally regarded as a synonym or the equivalent for diatomite, although it has been so used at various times. Accurately, diatomaceous silica is the preferred name for the principal mineral component of which the rock, diatomite, is composed. The terms diatomaceous earth and kieselguhr are used as synonymous with diatomite. The designations tripoli, tripolite, infusorial earth, etc., were used at one time but are now obsolete. With the changing nomenclature, these terms that were at one time correct when proposed and used for generations would be considered incorrect if used today in the light of current knowledge. The designation diatomite is reserved for those accumulations of diatomaceous silica that are of sufficient quality, size, and minability to be considered of potential commercial value. Processed diatomite possesses an unusual particulate structure and chemical stability that lends itself to applications not filled by any other form of silica. Foremost among these applications is its use as a filter aid, which accounts for over half of its current consumption. Its unique diatom structure, low bulk density, high absorptive capacity, high surface area, and relatively low abrasion are attributes responsible for its utility as a functional filler and as an extender in paint, paper, rubber, and in plastics; and as an anti-caking agent; thermal insulating material; catalyst carrier; and chromatographic support; polish, abrasive, and pesticide extender to name a few representative applications. The United States is the principal producing country, although diatomite is found in numerous other locations.

DISCUSSION Fred C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—This is a very complete description of the screened ore fine grinding installation at Lake Shore. The only important data which might be desired are the operating screen analyses and power consumption in each stage. The statement that the energy consumption, or kw-hr per ton, remains constant for all mill diameters is of great interest, but the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases. More definite test work is needed to establish this point. Screened ore fine minding has been successful on hard Lake Shore ore &d on about equally hard South African Rand ore. However, it is still not determined whether it would be successful on ores of average or less than average hardness. It is possible that with softer ores the consumption of ore pebbles might be exceedingly high, or might even exceed the available supply. Also, the softer feed might result in a rapid buildup of harmful intermediate sizes in the mill circuit. These factors can be determined only by a full scale or long pilot mill test. In any case the Lake Shore staff is to be congratulated for this pioneering work. Bunting. S. Crocker (author's reply)—As requested, the operating screen analyses and Bower consumption for each of the four stages of pebble milling are given, see Table XII. The fist three stages are in series circuit; the last stage is in closed circuit. The primary circuit had rock feed averaging 124 g per piece and the final stages rock feed weighing 63 g. The intermediate stages had mixtures of the two. Regarding Mr. Bond's statement that "the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases," I would say that I have frequently been told this but have never yet been shown any evidence or seen any evidence published that would prove this statement. It may be true that some of the big mills recently installed have mechanical power savers such as micarta bearings and better lubrication, but as far as the power consumed inside the mill is concerned, we at Lake Shore think that it varies as D2 .", and that is all. We published extensive information on this point in our 1939 paper. Recently Mr. Banks at Consolidated published the figures on his 10 ft 8 in. x 12 ft 0 in. rod mill. As reported in this discussion by the writer: we calculated the power necessary to run this mill based on our 7x6-ft rod mill to within 1 pct of the actual power reported by Mr.
