The difficulties encountered in the preparation of the lead smelter charge for the blast furnace and in the roasting and sintering of the ores, and the expert means taken for the preparation of these materials since the introduction of flotation concentrates into the lead smelter charge, have been described by W. H. Eardleyl and R. A. Wagstaff.² Function of Roasters and Blast Furnaces The lead smelter has first its roasters and its sintering devices, of which the primary object is the removal of sulfur from the ore or from the charge. The blast furnace follows; its function being the elimination of the gangue material left in the charge—the elimination of the insoluble, the iron, the zinc and the lime from the metallic lead. The secondary object is the separation of copper from the lead. A lead blast furnace is a sensitive apparatus. The materials composing the charge must be marshalled in certain proportions before they will make a fluid slag which will separate from the metallic lead. The silica, iron, lime and zinc must be put together in proportions that usually do not mist naturally in the ores, therefore fluxes are necessary. Function of the Flotation Cell The flotation cell—-speaking from the standpoint of a lead concentrate—has taken over part of the work hitherto performed entirely by either gravity concentration or the lead blast furnace. It has eliminated gangue from the concentrate and separated waste products from the lead. In so far as it has done that, it has usurped some of the function of the lead blast furnace; and it is much cheaper to run a flotation cell than a lead blast furnace. The effect in Utah, and it will be similar to effects in other districts. has been to remove a great deal of the gangue by means of flotation, whereas in the old clays it was eliminated by means of sme1ting. The resistance to flow of mixtures of gas and oil in passing up through the flow tubing of oil wells operated by gas-lift or by natural flow is a factor in oil-recovery technic that has received but little attention. Yet accurate design of a tubing installation for a particular set of conditions, where operation is by either of these methods, is impossible without quantitative data on the pressure loss suffered by the oil-gas mixture in its passage through the well tubing to the surface. Because of lack of such information, petroleum production technologists have been compelled to approach this problem by " cut-and-try" methods, which, doubtless in many cases, has resulted in the installation and use of tubing too large or too small for most efficient utilization of the expansive force of the gas used in lifting the oil. Impressed with the necessity for information of this character, the authors have conducted a series of tests with large-scale apparatus in the petroleum engineering laboratories of the University of California, designed to be productive of data that would afford a means of attacking the problem of flow-tubing design on a more scientific basis. Mechanics of Expulsion of Gas-oil Mixtures in Naturally Flowing and Gas-lift Wells When oil is lifted from a well by the expansive force of compressed natural gas or air, the fluids enter the lower end of the eduction tube under elevated pressure, with the gas partly in solution, but largely distributed in the form of occluded bubbles within the oil mass. As discharged from deep wells, after reaching the surface, there will normally be at least 60 times as much gas, by volume, as of oil; and in many cases the ratio of gas volume to that of the oil will have a value as great as 1000 or more. On entering the lower end of the eduction tube, however, a relatively smaller volume of gas will be found in the oil-gas mixture, on account of compression of the gas in accordance with the elevated pressure necessary. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken, Eindhoven, Netherlands)— After the departure of our friend Dijkstra to the United States, investigations on the effect of alloying elements on the behavior of nitrogen in a iron were continued in Eindhoven. We too found internal friction curves with two separate peaks for iron containing nitrogen in addition to 0.5 atomic pct V or 0.5 atomic pct Mo. Our first publication on these investigations" appeared almost simultaneously with the paper now under discussion. At first sight our experimental results seem to be in harmony with their conclusions, but a closer examination reveals that in the case of the Fe-V-N alloy the abnormal peak is not controlled by one time of relaxation only. Whereas iron containing 0.5 atomic pct Mn or Mo absorbs an amount of nitrogen of about the same magnitude as that absorbed by pure iron under identical conditions, iron containing vanadium absorbs in addition one nitrogen atom for every vanadium atom. This last amount, far exceeding the first amount in the case under consideration, combines chemically with the vanadium and causes no internal friction. The "free" nitrogen in the vanadium alloy gives rise not only to a damping peak corresponding to that in pure iron but— due to the presence of VN particles in the metal—also to the abnormal peak at higher temperatures. The VN particles create interstitial sites around themselves where the free nitrogen atoms are bound much tighter than in the normal interstices. These abnormal interstices, therefore, will capture free nitrogen atoms rapidly, whereupon these give rise to the abnormal damping. The binding energy in the abnormal interstices is not the same for all, and with coarsening of the VN precipitate the distribution of these energies is displaced toward the side of stronger binding. This is deduced from a shift of the summit of the second peak toward higher temperatures (from 80" to 88°C in our experiments) caused by prolonged heating at 950°C. A method is presented which allows the extension of the Ergun equation for the description of gas flow through packed beds in a nonisothermal regime. The pressure profile in the packed bed is calculated by the establishment of a differential energy balance and the iterative integration of the integral equation thus obtained. The predicted values of the pressure distribution were found to be in excellent agreement with those measured experimentally, under carefully controlled conditions. MANY metallurgical processes are carried out in systems in which a gas stream and particular solids are contacted in a packed bed arrangement under strongly nonisothermal conditions. Ore sintering, the firing of pellets, the operation of regenerators, blast furnace technology may be quoted as examples. Although many aspects of these systems have been extensively studied, an important variable, the pressure distribution and the relationship between pressure head and flow rate, received only little attention to date. The purpose of the paper is to present a brief survey of relevant previous work, followed by a more rigorously formulated model, together with experimental results that afford ready comparison of theoretical prediction with measurement. PREVIOUS WORK A great deal of information is available in the chemical engineering literature on flow phenomena in porous media.' The experimental results pertaining to gas flow were generally interpreted in terms of models based on the analogy with the flow through a pipe of an incompressible, isothermal fluid. Of the numerous, semiempirical correlations that have been proposed to relate pressure drop to the volumetric flow rate, the Ergun equation2 is generally regarded as the most satisfactory: The strong nonisothermality of the metallurgical systems previously mentioned would render the direct applicability of Eq. [I] rather doubtful as both density and viscosity are temperature-dependent. Ergun has used Eq. [I] for estimating the pressure drop in the stack region in the blast furnace by neglecting the viscous term and evaluating the gas density at the integral mean temperature.3 His calculations showed a rather variable agreement with measurements and it was uncertain whether the discrepancy found was attributable to the model or to the inaccuracies often inherent in measurements on an industrial scale. Other work on nonisothermal systems includes studies of the pressure distribution in sinter beds, notably by Voice et a1.4 and Mitchell.5 Mitchell developed a method involving the subdivision of the bed into several zones and assigning average property values (temperature, gas density, and so forth) to each zone. The pressure drop was then calculated for each zone by using an expression analogous to Eq. [I]. This method was an improvement over that described by Voice et al., but even here prediction and measurement differed by as much as 30 pct in certain cases. It would appear that no really satisfactory methods are available for the prediction of pressure drop in packed beds with a strongly nonisothermal regime. The method involving subdivision of the bed into small enough sections, that may be regarded as isothermal, would show promise; however its validity has to be tested by both a rigorous formulation and comparison with experimental data obtained under controlled conditions. In the following a formulation is presented together with experimental data allowing ready practical evaluation of the theory. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomen-clature of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respectively, for the two types indicated.

The adoption of a plan of safeguarding American industry against extreme revolutionary industrial propaganda is the keynote of a report just issued by ex-Governor Robert P. Bass, of New Hampshire, covering the period of his service as. Director of the Marine and Dock Industrial Relations Division of the United States Shipping Board. He thinks that the only hope of America's resisting the tide of industrial unrest that is sweeping over the civilized world is in the development and early application of a constructive industrial program, in which program publicity and education carrried on by the Government will hold a leading place. He says: The Government should systematically inform both employers and employees in regard to many matters of the utmost interest and importance of each. It should acquaint labor with the Government's activities and service to labor in the past and should create in labor an appreciation of its joint interest with capital and with the Government in the problems of production. Satisfactory assurances should be given that labor will have a substantial voice in determining the distribution between capital and labor of the profits of production. Labor should be promised its reasonable share of any increase in production. There should be a joint determination of wages, hours, and conditions of work. Based on the foregoing principles, great emphasis should be placed on labor's interest and responsibility in the processes f production.

Recent work by the authors1 on the oxide films formed on alloys of titanium and zirconium with nickel and copper indicated that an investigation of the oxides which form on alloys of copper and nickel might permit the relative rates of formation and diffusion of the ions of these metals to be determined. This binary system is of further interest since the alloys which form are of the solid solution type over the entire range. In addition nickel is much more oxidation resistant than copper. A comparison of the free energies of formation of the simple oxides which may occur on these alloys indicates that nickel oxide should be observed over the entire time and temperature ranges of oxidation for all alloy compositions~i In order for nickel oxide to predominate on the surface, it is necessary that nickel ions form and diffuse to the surface. Two factors which may influence the formation of nickel oxide may be the ionic sizes, where cu+ is o.,,6-,4 and ~i++ is o.,oh;, and the charges on the ions. On the basis of size, Ni++ should diffuse more readily than Cu+ while on the basis of charge, Cu+ should form more readily than Ni++. According to Uhlig2 passivity to corrosion in an alloy appears at a critical composition which for copper-nickel alloys is related to the tendency of the d band of electronic energy states to fill with elec-trans. This in in the copper- nickel alloys corresponds to 40 at. pct nickel at which composition Uhlig2 (quoting La Que's data) states that the alloy system becomes passive. Magnetic and specific heat data indicate that the d band of copper-nickel alloys is flied at 60 at. Pet Or or 4O at. pct nickel. Matt and Jones3 have shown that if, on alloying nickel with copper, one considers a copper atom to be identical with a nickel atom except for an extra electron (nickel has the configuration: 3ds 4s2 and copper: 3 dl0 4s) then at 60 at. pct copper or 40 at. pct nickel enough electrons are contributed by copper to fill the d band of the alloy. At this composition the magnetic susceptibility approximates zero according to Grew.4 Although the electron diffraction data will not determine the rates of the several reactions which may occur during oxidation, yet a determination of the structures of the surface oxides may yield information concerning the relationships, if any, which may exist between the oxide structures which form and that composition where the magnetic susceptibility approximates zero. It is quite possible, of course, that the mechanisms of the oxidation and corrosion reactions may be so widely different that no correlations between them may be possible. Survey OF Literature The metals, copper and nickel, which are face-centered cubic, form solid solution alloys which are face-centered cubic with no superstructure for all compositions. A hemispherical, constant volume drop with forced internal circulation was considered as a model approximating a real drop at a similar stage of formation Axially symmetric steady flow within a drop contaminated by surfactants was described by solving the full Navier-Stokes equations written in terms of a meridian plane stream function Rotational flow occurred inside the drop above a computed Reynolds number of 5.8, and the change in interfacial flow caused by imposing a surface-tension gradient at the surface had a significant effect on the internal flow Although the work is quite fundamental in nature, the rotational flow described in the paper is responsible for much of the bulk transport of solute to the interface in hydrometallurgical processes such as solvent extraction.

SOME days ago a visiting member from Pittsburgh who is an ardent supporter of the Institute remarked: "There are a lot of men who would be members of the Institute if it weren't so expensive. It is not so much the $15 dues as the $20 initiation fee. This makes quite a hurdle, especially for the younger fellows." A little further conversation developed the fact that the member had never learned of the changes in the By-laws regarding initiation fees and dues made by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors last November. As a great many others doubtless are unaware of these changes, the substance of two of the amendments is here repeated. They provide: (1) That the initiation fee for Junior Members (heretofore ten dollars) he abolished. (2) That the age limit for entrance as a Junior Member be increased from 27 years to 33; provided further, that the period during which the dues of a Junior Member are ten dollars shall be a maximum of six years but in no event shall extend beyond his thirty-third birthday. The Junior Member gets the identical privileges enjoyed by his seniors and he likewise assumes the same obligations with the sole exception of the financial payments. This one exception is justified by the fact that the engineers of more mature years, who are established in the profession, - are able and willing to assume a slightly greater financial burden. In effect, it is a small subsidy for the younger men; but these in turn will later enter the group of those that give instead of receive assistance. The practical result is that an engineer under 27 can obtain every privilege and benefit of membership for six years on the payment of only $10 per year without any initiation fee. A man of thirty can do the same for a period of three years. Incidentally, a candidate applying for membership (either as senior or junior) in the next few months need pay dues for the second half of 1935 only. A Junior Member -can be enrolled with an immediate outlay of only $5. The Institute does not seek-members indiscriminately merely to swell the number. These facts are not presented as a "bargain" offer in any sense. The standards for admission are high and are watched zealously. But it frankly-wants to give qualified men who can benefit from membership every encouragement to apply. Naturally, the Institute does not want lack of accurate information regarding initiation fees and -dues to be a stumbling block to any that are eligible and desirous of enrolling. Members are urged to take it upon themselves to clear up misapprehensions on this point, particularly among younger engineers.-Editorial reprinted from MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1935.

Transit A light weight, totally enclosed theodolite, especially designed for mining, has been placed on the market by Askania Werke, A. G. The instrument weighs only 41/4 lb and measures 51/8 x 71/2 in. without tripod and in a waterproof aluminum hood. It may be mounted on tripod or bracket without removing the protective hood. [ ] Standard equipment includes diagonal eyepiece rotating in all directions which eliminates need to be in line with scope for sighting and makes an auxiliary scope unnecessary for steep sights. The transit reads direct to 1 minute and may be estimated to 6 seconds by means of optical micrometer on both horizontal and vertical circles. The telescope in vertical position serves as optical plummet, sighting through an opening in the base. The instrument is shown above mounted for attaching to a pin driven in timber or rock, eliminating tripod or set-up bar in cramped quarters. The chain clamp in the lower picture is used on timber or steel ground supports. Complete with carrying case and set-up brackets, ready for use in a raise, it weighs less than 6 lb, and the protective hood remains on until the instrument is securely mounted. Since the beginning of the 20th century the world has been trying to find a new political system, even as it did at the end of the 18th century. The French Revolution instigated the destruction of absolute monarchies when Napoleon unwittingly showed the masses the advantages of freedom, as opposed to the abuses of unlimited power by the imperialists. In spite of advances in culture, science, and technology during the past 50 years, there is a hangover of laissez-faire economic principles. Failure to divert the trends of minority pressure groups has caused two world wars and is the basis for the current social unrest and turmoil. In the ebullition of ideas there have risen to the surface the dregs of ideas, old and new-Nazism, Fascism, Russian Communism-a hodgepodge of imperialistic, socialistic, communistic and capitalistic maneuverings where state monopoly of capital enables ruthless exploitation of the masses. The United States owes much of its industrial greatness to the work of pioneers in the mineral industries. The task of the pioneer was to locate and develop in a rude way the mineral resources of the nation. Today, mineral industries leaders are still in great demand, but for a different purpose-to direct intelligent utilization of the limited, waning, submarginal mineral resources. AMONG mining men as well as in the popular mind the conviction has held sway that mining is pre-eminently a western industry. True it is that gold, silver, copper and other metals have made the States of California, Colorado, Montana, Utah. Nevada and Arizona famous. The prominence attained by these States as mineral producers is, however, not measured alone by the money value of the products of their mines. While the metals are without doubt indispensable in industry, the glamour of the precious metals, and the lure of copper, lead and zinc have given to their ore deposits a sentimental interest that often quite out-weighs their commercial importance. Today a great group of more commonplace minerals are finding a place in commerce and industry rivaling that of the metals, but there is little sentiment attached to them, and,. therefore, they attain relatively little publicity. This is the great group of the non-metallic minerals, exclusive of fuels and oils, including stone, sand and gravel, cement, lime, gypsum, asbestos, mica, phos-phate rock and many others. Almost unnoticed they have grown in production to almost unbelievable pro-portions. The estimated value of metal production for 1925 is given as $1,380,000,000, of the non-metals (ex-cluding fuels) $1,294,000,000. The non-metallic industries are not new, many of them date back almost to pre-historic times; but, as the greatest of them (on a tonnage basis) provides raw materials for the construction industries, it required the activities of the present age of construction to bring about their enormous development. Many of them enter manufacturing as well as con-struction. Non-metallic minerals constitute the back-bone of our great chemical industries. While construction and manufacture reach to all parts of the country their widest development has been in the great industrial centers of the eastern Seaboard and the middle West. Consequently the raw materials of mineral origin required for these great industries have attained a remarkable growth in the eastern half of the- United States. In compiling figures of mineral production for 1924, for which more complete data are available than for later years, the surprising fact is brought to light that the non-metallic mineral produc-tion alone of some of the eastern and middle-western States exceeds by a substantial margin the total min-eral production of some of the western States that have been classed as essentially mining States. Thus the non-metallic mineral production, exclusive of coal and petroleum, of the State of Ohio, was approximately $150,000,000; of Pennsylvania $175,000,000; and of New York $107,000,000. For the same year, 1924, the total mineral production of Utah was $84,357,000; of Montana $70,632,000; of Colorado $61,488,000; and of Nevada only $26,226,000. Even Minnesota, with its enormous iron ore production, reached only $107,845,-000, or a sum about equivalent to the non-metallic min-eral production of the State of New York.

GRAIN coarsening implies a discontinuous type of grain growth during which a few grains in a fine grained recrystallized matrix grow to large grain sizes at the expense of the matrix. Studies of this phenomenon in various metals1,2 indicate that grain coarsening may result when continuous grain growth in a fine grained matrix is inhibited by either a dispersion of very fine inclusions or by a strong texture. In the former case a period of annealing time exists prior to grain coarsening during which grain growth inhibition is gradually de- creased by dissolution or coalescence of the dispersed inclusions. This mechanism can be made to occur in uranium during anneals at high a phase temperatures. ' A study of some of the factors influencing the kinetics of grain coarsening and the coarse grain sizes in a uranium has led to a method for preparing a uranium single crystals. Previously such single crystals containing considerable substructure were prepared at this laboratory by a phase change method, similar to that described by Cahn.3 Attempts to prepare more perfect single crystals by strain-anneal techniques were unsuccessful. The anthracite industry can be divided into two parts—the underground, or mining, and the outside, or preparation or manufacture. To understand recoveries in the two branches, some of the history of the industry and the changes that have taken place in the past century should be considered. It is a long step from 1807, when 55 tons were produced in the Wyoming field, to 1917, the peak year, when 80,841,223 tons were shipped to market from all the fields. In 1820, the Lehigh Coal Co., the predecessor of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., shipped 365 tons in arks down the canal of the Lehigh Navigation Co. The Schuylkill field was not opened until 1822, when 1480 tons were shipped. The Wyoming field really became a producer in 1829, when 7000 tons were mined and shipped. It is well to note, at this time, the passing of the Coleraine colliery after a life of 88 years; in collieries of this age will be found the romance of the region, as well as the history of the changes to date. Mining Methods In the Lehigh region, the first coal came from the old quarry mines at Summit Hill; a little later the open-cut workings, or quarries, east of Jeansville, and near Beaver Meadow were opened. In the Wyoming field, it was necessary to resort to underground mining almost from the very first. Ashmead1 has described the changes in outside preparation methods, dl tending to increase the percentage of coal shipped to market. A description from the days when the lump coal was raked and screened out in the quarries or mines, to the modern breaker of today, shipping as high as 6000 tons of at least eight sizes of coal in an 8-hr. day is a very interesting story. Each size is a step toward increasing the yield from the property. With the belief that the supply was inexhaustible, the early mining was conducted with the thought of getting the maximum amount of coal on first mining. The superintendent was his own foreman and engineer.

Creep of tantalum was measured at temperatures from 0.6 to 0.89 of the absolute melting temperature. The creep curves include first, second, and third stages. Steady-state creep rate depends on the fourth power of stress. The activation energy for creep throughout this temperature range is approximately 114 kcal per mole, measured by the aT technique. Subgrain formation occurs as a result of creep strain, and pile-up dislocation arrays are observed in etch-pit patterns. BECAUSE of its high melting point-which is exceeded only by those of rhenium and tungsten—and its high room-temperature ductility compared to most of the other high-melting-point metals, tantalum will undoubtedly be utilized in an increasing number of high-temperature applications. Alloying studies directed toward increased high-temperature strength must use data on tantalum itself as a base line in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the alloying additions. However, to date, no systematic study of creep of tantalum at temperatures above one-half of its melting point has been reported in the literature. Conway, Salyards, McCullough, and Flagella1 have measured linear creep rate of tantalum sheet as a function of stress, but at only one temperature, 2600°C. This paper describes a relatively thorough study of the high-temperature creep of tantalum. METHOD Material Tested. The commercially supplied, l/2-innch-diameter tantalum rod used for this work was electron-beam-melted, cold-forged, rolled, swaged, cleaned chemically, and vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1000°C, all by its manufacturer. The vendor's analysis included 60 to 170 ppm C, 3.4 to 4.2 ppm H, 60 to 80 ppm 0, 15 ppm N, and a hardness ranging from 66 to 81 Bhn and averaging 76 Bhn. Creep eimens Used. Two creep-tested specimens are shown in Fig. 1. The 1/4 in.-diameter gage section was 3/4 to 1 in. long, and terminated either at shoulders 5 mils high or at 20-mil-diameter tantalum wires spot-welded to the circumference of the gage section. Both kinds of shoulders served equally well as fiducial marks for optical strain measurements. The spot welding did not alter the creep behavior in any detectable way; the 5-mil- high sharp shoulders did not result in any detectable localized effect on the strain. Before testing, each tensile bar was first mechanically polished -id then electrochemically polished according to the method referred to by Forgeng2 as the "Thompson Ramo Woolridge" method, which was suitable for tantalum after small adjustments of technique were made. Two tensile bars tested at low stresses had 1/8-in.-diameter gage sections and utilized only the weight of the bottom grip for the applied load. Although these diameters were smaller than were desired for other reasons, applied loads were known with high precision in the tests in which they were used. Testing Procedure. Two different constant-load creep-testing machines were employed, one of which has been described by Smith, Olson, and Brown.3 In both, the tensile bar is held vertically on the axis of a cylindrical tungsten tube or screen heater by threaded tungsten grips. The tensile bars and associated grips are heated by radiation from the incandescent heaters, which are heated by their own electrical resistance. Both testing machines use pins to hold the bottom grips in place. The load is applied to a tensile bar through hanging weights, a constant force-multiplication lever, a pull rod sealed to the chamber lid, and a top grip threaded to the pull rod at one end and to the tensile bar at the other. In one machine, the vacuum seal is a bellows with a low spring constant; in the other, the seal involves a rotating "0 ring". With the latter, rotation is converted to translation with a crank shaft, so that elongation of the tensile bar is accommodated with no change of tensile load. The incandescent tensile bar is viewed by an external optical system through slots in the radiation shields and heater, and an enlarged image is projected on a ground-glass screen. Gage-length measurements are made on this image with cathetometers on traveling microscopes. With regard to creep-test results, the two machines were identical. Thorium oxide coatings were applied to the threaded ends of the tensile bars, to prevent diffusion welding of the tensile bars to the grips during testing. Specimen temperatures were measured with an L. & N. optical pyrometer which had been calibrated against a standard carbon arc, and were corrected fir window absorption by calculation from the measured spectral transmittance of the quartz observation windows. Longitudinal temperature gradients in the tensile-bar gage length and temperature drifts during testing were detectable but small, and were estimated to be 10°C or less. The success of the Charpy impact test in the steel industry has led those interested in aluminum alloys to investigate the possible application of this test to aluminum and its alloys. In this paper are set forth the results of a few preliminary tests made at the Lynite Laboratories of the Aluminum Manufactures, Inc. In order to study more thoroughly the significance of the Charpy test, slow-bending tests have been made duplicating the arrangement of the impact machine. Tests have been made on both notched and unnotched specimens of a series of copper-aluminum alloys. Apparatus The standard American-made Charpy impact machine delivering a blow of over 200 ft.-lb. was much too large to test aluminum-alloy specimens of the same type used for steel, so that it was necessary either to adopt a larger specimen or to have a special light-weight hammer made. Since there is no known relation between specimens of different sixes, even though geometrically similar, it was decided to adhere to the 10 by 10 mm. specimen. Accordingly, Sauveur and Boylston, the American makers of the machine, were asked to construct a special light-weight pendulum adapted to their standard machine, this pendulum to have one-tenth the capacity of the standard. The writer wishes here to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. H. M. Boylston for the personal interest and care exercised in constructing this pendulum. The machine with the light-weight hammer in place is shown in Fig. I. It is mounted on a concrete foundation with the concrete covering the flange on the base of the machine. Vibration is further prevented by four 5/8-in. (15.8 mm.) foundation bolts. Operating costs were rather high so a complete test was undertaken early in 1921. The ovens will be referred to as Nos. 1, 2, and 3. Nos. 1 and 2 are electric ovens of different makes while No. 3 is an oil-fired oven made by the firm that made No. 2. The three arc. equipped with similar ventilating devices. They have full-height doors at front and rear. The cores are placed on iron racks, which arc lifted by Cowan trucks and rolled into the ovens through the front doors. When baked, they are removed through the rear doors. Fig. 1 shows the general plan of the elecric ovens while Fig. 2 shows the plan of the oil-fired oven. Oven No. 1 is 91 in. (231 em.) wide, 83 in. (210 em.) high. and 79 in. (200 cm.) deep, inside measurements. The walls are constructed ill panels about 18 in. (46 cm.) wide and 43/16 in. OF all the qualities that are essential in a good cigar tobacco none is quite so important as the burn. This term is general and includes many points, the most important of which are evenness of burn, color of ash, firmness and coherence of ash, and fire-holding capacity. The fire-holding capacity refers to the length of time the leaf or cigar will continue to, glow after ignition. Chlorides tend to prevent complete combustion and products are formed thereby that are injurious to the flavor and aroma. On the other hand, the carbonates of the alkalies, particularly of potassium, aid the combustion and increase the fire-holding capacity. Barth1 thought that the harmful effect of the chlorides was due to their fusing and coating the tobacco, thereby preventing complete combustion. Schlosing,2 Nessler,3 and Garner,4 suggested widely different theories to account for the favorable action of potassium salts. In order to study carefully the action of the various salts upon the course of combustion of the cigar a knowledge of the temperature of the burning cigar is necessary. Lehmann5 who seems to be the only investigator who has made any attempt to determine the temperature of a burning cigar gives 480° C. as the maximum temperature which he recorded. It is evident, however, that his measurements were in error, probably on account of the method and apparatus used, since the lowest visible red corresponds to a temperature of about 575° C.
