Deposits of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residual limonite at the west end of the island near Mayagüezl-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7"9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. With the possible exception of the mixed deposit near Arroyo, the magnetite is directly associated with andesitic and dioritic intrusives, which invade the Cretaceous rock section, and the bulk of it, occurring in calcareous sediments, is clearly of contact-replacement origin. FIRE-DAMP is a mixture of methane with other inert gases or combustible gases. The inert gases in question are carbonic acid, water vapor, nitrogen, etc. The combustible gases are hydrogen, ethane, etc. The study of the properties of fire-damp, therefore, becomes a study of the properties of methane and the influence on its properties of the different gases we have mentioned. Characteristic Properties of Methane 1. Respirability.-Methane being a paraffin is characterized by its weak chemical affinities. From the physiological, point of view one could substitute it for nitrogen of the air at least momentarily, without experiencing any difficulty in breathing the mixture consisting of 21 per cent. 02 + 79 per cent. CH4. I .have tried this on myself, making the gas exhaled -from the lungs burn subsequently in a Bunsen burner.1 From the chemical point of view, this weak affinity permits the gas to be burned in certain circumstances with hydrogen and oxide of carbon in an oxygenated mixture, with the result that the last two gases achieve only a fractional combustion. This practice has been utilized with success in the methods of analysis which I have perfected and which I describe later in this paper. 2. Retardation of Flashing Point.-A characteristic property of methane is its retardation of flashing point, noted by Davy in 1816 and studied by Mallard and Le Chatelier in 1883.2 Taffanel and Le Floch have recently confirmed these results.3 Let us recall the nature of this retardation:

The two calcium sulfate minerals-gypsum and anhydrite-occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaS042H20) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO4) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the largest part of total calcium sulfate reserves. However, it has very minor economic use, and most of the following discussion will be devoted to gypsum. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal con- stituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [ ] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have never been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. As a result most mine production of gypsum will range between 85 and 95% pure. Often it is used as mined, although in certain cases, one or more forms of mineral beneficiation are employed to upgrade the product.

At Henderson, Nev., Manganese Inc. is mining by open pit methods a low grade manganese ore averaging 21 pct Mn, concentrating it to 42 pct by flotation, and agglomerating it to produce nodules of metallurgical grade-about 48 pct Mn. The striking aspect of the whole operation, and one that has considerable effect on nodulizing, is the use of approximately 250 lb of reagent per ton of mill feed. For many years rotary kilns have been used for drying, calcining, clinkering cement and other products, and burning lime. Their use for nodulizing or agglomerating a metallic ore is new-first reported in this country in 1904, when a small rotary kiln at South Chicago was employed to nodulize flue dust from a blast furnace. After a short time this process was replaced by sintering.

LONG before the role of dislocations in the plastic deformation of crystals was recognized, the stress-strain field around dislocations received considerable attention in the theory of elasticity. It seems that Weingarten1 was the first to consider dislocations as simple and typical sources of internal stress in elastic solids, and Volterra2 and Timpe3 investigated their elastic field. Fig 3-1 shows the two basic types of dislocations considered by Volterra. The first arises by making a straight-edged .plane cut in a solid, displacing the two surfaces of the cut in their own plane relatively to one another by a constant amount in a direction perpendicular to the edge, and welding them together; this is shown in Fig 3-la, where the outer cylindrical surface represents the boundary of the solid, and the thin spiral cylinder around the edge of the cut has been removed in order to avoid infinities of stress and strain. The second type of dislocation is shown in Fig 3-lb; here the surfaces of the cut have been displaced relatively to one another by a constant amount parallel to the edge, and then welded together. After J. M. Burgers,4 these two types are called edge and screw dislocations, respectively. They represent simple limiting cases; in the general case, the surfaces of the cut are displaced by a constant vector that lies in the plane of the surface but has components both parallel and perpendicular to the edge of the cut. IN the course of small seale experiments on the electrodeposition, of copper, extremely brittle deposits were obtained from electrolytes prepared by leaching calcined chalcopyrite with aqueous sulfuric acid. It was not possible to strip the metal without fracture after it had been deposited from such electrolytes onto smooth oiled copper sheets, the usual plant procedure for the production of so-called starting sheets. The embrittlement did not occur with electrolytes made either by leaching the calcine with water or by treating an acid leachate to remove iron as hydrous ferric oxide. The electrolytes which produced brittle deposits were found to contain molybdenum in concentrations of 10 to 25 mg per 1, whereas those which produced ductile deposits contained <0.5 mg per 1. Synthetic electrolytes having the composition: Cu", 40 gpl; Fe", 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; Fe3+, 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; and H,SO,, 10 to 50 gpl, were prepared from reagent-grade salts; by adding ammonium molybdate, the embrittling effect of the higher concentrations of molybdenum (VI) was strikingly confirmed. The brittle deposits contained up to 0.03 pct Mo. The importance of oxidation state of the molybdenum was demonstrated when the electrolyte containing it was circulated continuously through a bed of fine copper metal during deposi- tion. Under these reducing conditions, the cathode deposit was ductile and molybdenum could not be detected. Molybdenum has not been recognized as one of the metals causing embrittlement of copper nor is it listed among the usual impurities. In most elec-trowinning plants there is a purification step which removes iron from the leachate before electrolysis. In these cases molybdenum would be coprecipitated with hydrous ferric oxide. In the case of the large leaching plant at Chuquicamata, Chile, where the leachate is reported to contain considerable molybdenum, it would be reduced to a lower oxidation state during removal of chlorine by means of cement copper. This may explain why the embrittling effect of molybdenum has not been reported previously. Moreover, in copper refining plants where soluble anodes have been prepared by a high temperature smelting process, it is most unlikely that any molybdenum would remain with the copper, whereas the calcines in this work were prepared in a fluidized bed reactor at a temperature not exceeding 720°C. INTRODUCTION In this paper, a numerical process for selecting a mining method, with the emphasis on underground mass mining techniques, such as caving, induced caving, and stoping, is proposed. In the past, selection of a mining method for a new property was based primarily on operating experience at similar type deposits and on methods already in use in the district of the deposit. Then, the chosen method was modified during the early years of mining as ground conditions and ore character were bet- ter understood. Today, however, the large capital investment required to open a new mine or change an existing mining system make it imperative that the mining methods examined during the feasibility studies and the method actually selected have a high probability of attaining the projected production rates. Although experience and engineering judgment still provide major input into the selection of a mining method, subtle differences in the characteristics of each deposit, which may affect the method chosen or the mine design, can usually be perceived only through analysis of measured characteristics. The parameters that must be examined when choosing a mining method include: 1) geometry and grade distribution of the deposit; 2) rock mass strength for the ore zone, the hanging wall, and the footwall; 3) mining costs and capitalization requirements; 4) mining rate; 5) type and availability of labor; 6) environmental concerns; and 7) other site-specific considerations. This paper encompasses a detailed look at the first two parameters since they, plus mining costs, have the greatest impact on the selection of a mining method. The proposed method selection process is for a project where drilling has defined sufficient geologic reserves, but little or no underground development has been done. Since each deposit has its own characteristic geanetry/grade distribution, and rock mechanics properties, mining method selection should be at least a two-stage process. In Stage 1, the deposit is described in terms of geometry, grade distribution, and rock mechanics properties. Using these parameters, the mining methods can be ranked to determine which are most applicable; they can then be considered in general terms of mining and capitalization cost, mining rate, type and availability of personnel, environmental concerns, and other site-specific considerations. In Stage 2, the most likely mining methods are costed out, based on a general mine plan. Mining and capitalization costs are used to determine a cut-off grade fran which a minable reserve can be calculated; economic comparisons can then be made to determine the optimum mining method and economic feasibility. During the mine planning phase of Stage 2, rock mechanics information would be used to provide realistic estimates of underground opening size, amount of support, orientation of openings, and caving characteristics, and open pit slope angles. If ground control or operational problems should be encountered with the methods being considered, modifications could be made. Although planning on paper extends start-up time, it is cheaper to err on paper than to find the error after mining has begun. METHOD SELECTION - STAGE 1 The main purpose of Stage 1 is to select those mining methods which should be considered in greater detail. The simplest way to do this is by defining those characteristics required for each mining method and then determining whether the characteristics of the deposit are suitable. However, no one mining method is so restrictive that it can be used for only one set of characteristics, as indicated by the classification system proposed by Boshkov and Wright (1973). In the mining method selection proposed, geometry, grade distribution, and rock mechanics characteristics are ranked according to their acceptability for ten general mining methods.

The process of triboelectric separation from the point of view of its potential for selective separation of various mineral particles can be described as "dry flotation." Large scale practical applications of this technique are limited because suitable models which can describe contact charging of mineral particles have not been developed. Among the various concepts a promising one is an attempt to change development in dielectric minerals within the limits of contact phenomenon in semiconductors. Experimental investigations reported in this paper indicate that the charge development is mainly a result of contact electrification of dielectric minerals characterized by "donor" and "acceptor" type energy spectra due to lattice defects.

THE purpose of this paper is to present briefly a description of some of the special methods of separation or concentration, either singly or in combination with others, and to give certain operating data and examples. Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electro-static separators and air flotation or air tables.

THE purpose of this paper is to present a scientific method for deter-mining the proper span and shape of roof for safe and economical mining; at present, these two vital factors wherever pillars are left to support the roof are determined by local practice or general experience. To develop the method described here, experimental laboratory work was done. The arch adopted was a segment of a circle, a flat roof being considered an arch with an infinite radius. Hitherto, arches have been used underground without the background of stress analysis that generally precedes arch construction on the surface. In many cases results have not been as expected, because of the lack of knowledge of the factors affecting its strength and behavior. A theoretical and experimental study of arches should furnish informa-tion that will make it possible to design safe and economical surface structures as well as underground openings. For example, on the subject of mine drifts and tunnels, the present idea is that arching their backs increases their strength; this paper will indicate that this is not always true, and if it can be shown that under certain conditions arching becomes unnecessary an economic saving will result. In room-and-pillar work a question may arise as to whether arching the roof and gobbing the excavated material will result in timber saving, and a decrease in the dan¬gers from falls of roof. It is to be distinctly understood that each mine must be treated as an individual problem, and that answers to these ques-tions and many others can now be found after experimental laboratory data have been obtained.

INTRODUCTION Spoil pile slope failures can have costly consequences. In- stability in the form of a single major event or as a recurring problem can &apos;mean lost production, lost resources and damaged mining equipment. In extreme but not uncomnon cases, a major spoils slide can force the closure and abandonment of a pit. Slope stability is affected by mine operating practices as we1 l as geologic conditions and material parameters. Mine operators can enhance spoil pile stability through constructive changes in their operations. Attention to the causes of in- stability can lead to development of operating practices tailored to site specific problems. Action aimed at limiting future instability is frequently more cost effective than continually "coping" with unstable spoils. The effect of mine operations on material properties is often overlooked because the "data" are not easily quantified nor input directly into stability analysis equations. We have found, however, that miners&apos; experience with their own operation, as well as data pooled from similar operations, yields relation- ships which can be utilized to solve stability problems. The repetitive nature of area type surface coal mines with successive spoil pile rows further enables the development of useful site specific relationships. Stability problems can be mitigated by applying these relationships.

In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CCD circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview. Fundamentals of Vacuum Filtration Filtration may be defined as the separation of solids from a liquid effected by passing the liquids through a porous medium. If the filtrate is induced to flow through the medium by hydrostatic head, we refer to it as gravity filtration. If we utilize super-atmospheric pressure upstream of the medium we call it pressure filtration and if sub-atmospheric pressure is applied downstream of the medium we call it vacuum filtration. Centrifugal filtration occurs when a centrifugal force is applied across the medium. Centrifuges will not be discussed in this paper. Laboratory studies of several factors affecting measurements of relative permeability were made using the three-section plastic-covered core technique. Results show that the core assembly, properly constructed, will perform as a single unit, and that the testing technique will, under suitable conditions of pressure gradient, gas expansion, and migration of partial water saturation, permit measurement of flow characteristics not affected by technique. Wettability equilibrium is readily established in cores exhibiting strong wetting preference to water or oil when initially saturated with water. Laboratory tests must be conducted so that saturation changes represent those that occur in the reservoir. Immediate implications of saturation history are (1:) that the possibility exists of increasing the displacement efficiency of solution gas drive reservoirs over the natural process, and (2) residual gas saturations following water flooding in gas or gas condensate reservoirs will be 15 to 50 per cent pore space rather than 1 to 11 per cent as generally believed. It is fortuitous if general fluid flow characteristics obtained experimentally have accurate application to specific field problems. Also, it is felt that at this time there is not sufficient knowledge of the flow behavior of oil, water, and gas in porous materials to enable applicable analytical description of this to be made based on other measured rock characteristics. Measurement of relative permeability in the laboratory offers the only direct method subject to adequate checking for determination of flow characteristics applicable to field problems. Primarily, this paper deals with laboratory experiments to establish the effects of several factors on the measurement of relative permeability and the practical significance of this knowledge. Laboratory flow tests are essentially model studies; the gross reservoir being represented by a small rock sample. It is necessary to simulate in experiments all the factors of importance which influence flow in the reservoir, as well a.; to eliminate effects peculiar to the model studied to assure measurement of valid flow behavior. The mechanical properties of 300-series stainless steels were investigated in both high-pressure hydrogen and helium environments at ambient temperatures. An auslenitic steel which is unstable with respect to formation of strain-induced a (bee) and € (hcp) mar-tensile is embrittled when plastically strained in a hydrogen environment. A stable austenitic steel is not embriltled when tested under the same conditions. The presence of hydrogen causes embrittlement at the mar-lensitic structure and a definite change in the general fracture mode from a ductile to a quasicleavage type. The embrittled martensitic facets are surrounded by a more ductile type fracture which suggests that the presence of hydrogen initiates microcracks at the martensitic structure. If a steel is unstable with respecl to fortnation of strain induced martensile, plastic deformation in a hydrogen environment will produce rapid embrittlement of a notched specimen in comparison to an unnotched one. FERRITIC and martensitic steels can be embrittled by hydrogen that has been introduced into the alloys, either by thermal or cathodic charging prior to testing.1-5 However, conflicting reports exist as to whether austenitic steels that are stable or unstable with respect to formation of strain-induced martensite can be embrittled by hydrogen.8-12 A recent investigation has shown that cathodically-charged thin foils of a stable austenitic steel can be embrittled.13 An earlier investigation of a thermally charged 18-10 stainless steel revealed a significant decrease in the ductility only at the lowest test temperature of -78°C, although strain-induced bee martensite was shown to be present in one specimen tested at ambient temperatures.&apos; When martensitic steels are tested in a hydrogen atmosphere, they are embrittled.&apos;4-&apos;7 It has been observed in this Laboratory that 304L steel, which is unstable with respect to formation of strain induced martensite, forms surface cracks when plastically strained in a high-pressure hydrogen environment. Work in progress elsewhere concurrent with this investigation has also established that 304L is embrittled when tested in a high-pressure hydrogen atmosphere." The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of a high-pressure hydrogen environment on the tensile properties of a stainless steel that contained strain-induced martensite (304L) and one that did not (310). EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Notched and unnotched cylindrical specimens were machined from 304L* and 310 rods that were heat- treated at 1000°C in argon for 1 hr followed by a water quench. The chemical analyses of these steels are given in Table I. The unnotched specimens had a reduced section diameter of 0.184 & 0.001 in., a gage length of 0.7 in., and were threaded with a 0.5-in.-diam. thread on each end. The notched specimens had a reduced section diameter of 0.260 * 0.001 in. and a 0.75-in. gage length, with a 30 pct 60 deg v-notch at the center. The notch had a maximum root radius of 0.002 in. The tensile bars were fractured in a hydrogen or helium atmosphere of 104 psi at ambient temperatures. The system used for mechanically testing the specimens is to be described in detail elsewhere.19 Several specimens of each type were tested in air using an Instron testing machine. The same yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were obtained in 104 psi helium with the above system as with the conventional testing machine. Magnetic analysis was employed to determine that there was a (bee) martensite in plastically deformed 304L and that it was not present in plastically deformed 310. The magnetic technique depended on allowing the material being studied to serve as the core between a primary and secondary coil. Thus, any change in the amount of magnetic material present between the annealed and plastically deformed steels will be indicated by corresponding changes in the induced voltage in the secondary circuit." The ratio of the output signal of a nonmagnetic stainless steel to a completely magnetic maraging steel was 2000 to I. Several unnotched 304L bars tested in hydrogen were analyzed for hydrogen by vacuum fusion analysis. There was an increase in the hydrogen content to approximately 2 ppm for the specimens tested in hydrogen, as compared to less than 1 ppm for the as-received material. Several thin sections cut from notched areas of 304L specimens tested in hydrogen and containing the fracture surface contained approximately 1.5 ppm H. The accuracy of these determinations was estimated to be ± 50 pct.

The computer system described has the capability of three levels of control, including DDC with a single central processor. The system is also capable of on-line program compilation and modification through an extension of vendor utilities. The system is now in operation.

The reprocessing of advanced fuels such as carbides, oxides, and cermets, containing up to 30pct pu has been studied. Dissolution of uranium carbides in nitric acid produces appreciable quantities of mellitic acid which has undesirable effects in subsequent stages of the process. Mixed oxides containing up to about 40 pct Pu in solid solution with UO, are soluble in nitric acid and a leaching type process in nitric acid for a stainless steel/UO,. PuO, fuel containing 30 pct Pu appears to be feasible. It offers considerable economic advantages THE reprocessing of the U-Cr alloy core of the Dounreay Fast Reactor was described by Buck and others at the Second Geneva conference.&apos; This paper described the flowsheet and plant for processing a relatively simple fuel of good dissolution charac- over total dissolution routes. A new oxidation-sub -limation process is described for metallic fuels containing up to 12 pct Mo. New data is presented on the solvent extraction of uranium and plutonium nitrates into tributyl phosphate -odorless kerosene and of the influence of radiolytically produced acid phosphates on this part of the process. It is concluded that there are no insuperable difficulties which will prevent the satisfactory reprocessing of high burn-up plutonium fuels by a solvent extraction route. teristics and of low-plutonium content after irradiation. However, it has been clear for some time that more satisfactory operation of the reactor can be obtained by the use of a core with better irradiation performance than U-Cr alloy and a U-Mo alloy will be used for the next charge. Recent modifications to the core mean that it is now possible to carry out irradiations of fuel element subassemblies similar to those which might be used in a fast power reactor and trials with plutonium-bearing fuel elements will be made in the relatively near future. INTRODUCTION In 1975 278x10 3 tonnes of zinc was consumed in the United Kingdom, of which 69.3x10 3 tonnes was obtained from secondary sources. Of this secondary zinc 37.7x10 3 tonnes was used in brass making, the remainder was used in non metallic applications - eg oxides and salts. Many forms of zinc-bearing wastes arise, for example as galvaniser&apos;s drosses and residues, fumes from ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical processes, and filter cakes from rayon manufacture and metal finishing. In the case of zinc-bearing dusts and fumes, the quantities available for recycle are at present restricted by the failure to collect them efficiently, hut environmental factors are leading to improvements in gas cleaning, with the result that quantities collected will increase and then exceed those required for the production of chemicals, so that some dusts may either have to be dumped or processed to metal. The recovery of zinc from steelmaking dusts is practised in W. Germany (1) and Japan (2) employing processes based on reduction in rotary kilns in order to produce sponge iron and a zinc- rich oxide suitable for feeding to the zinc-lead blast furnace. Although the zinc-lead blast furnace is the only zinc-making process used in the UK, no similar treatment of steelmaking dusts is carried out, a pilot scheme was tested by the British Steel Corporation, but development was abandoned for economic reasons. It appears to be cheaper to pelletise suitable dusts and export them for treatment elsewhere.

Several high-temperature eutectics of cobalt and nickel alloys were modified by small additions of selected elements. Thes-e alloys were compared to unmodified melts for microstructural variations. A few modified compositions were selected on the basis of structure and their tensile and stress-rupture behavior determined. The results of stress-rupture tests in air at 1800 F and room-temperature tensile tests of four high-temperature eutectics showed modification capable of producing substantial improvements in properties. The microstructures were altered and mechanical properties improved by: a.) dispersing a subordinate phase more uniformly throughout the matrix; b) replacing large continuous -network or platelike constituents with small equiaxed discontinuous phases; and c) by forming new, finely divided phases. tHE term "modification" is most commonly used to describe the refinement in microstructure of the Al-Si eutectic that occurs as a result of rapid cooling from the melt or on slow cooling after treatment with small amounts of sodium.1 "Modification" has also been used to describe the change from flake to spheroidal graphite in the austenite-graphite eutectic of cast iron.2 This change of graphite shape is accomplished by small additions of cerium or magnesium.3 Other systems have also been shown to be capable of modification, for example: Pb-Sn by copper;4 Al-Cu by sodium;5 Al-Mn by sodium;5 and Pb-Sb by aluminum.5 Although modification of Al-Si alloys and cast irons is usually accompanied by improved mechanical properties, a general definition of modification has been suggested to include the effect of small quantities of impurity elements on the microstructures of all eutectic alloys, regardless of the effect on the mechanical properties.6 In this paper, the term "modification" is employed in a broad sense to include the formation of third phases or even the supplanting of one of the binary eutectic phases by a third phase. The mechanism of modification, as for any solidification phenomenon, must be considered primarily in terms of nucleation and growth. Although both nuclea-tion and growth mechanisms are required to explain all the phenomena observed in connection with the solidification of modified eutectics, various investigators have usually favored one or the other.7"16 It has been shown that modification of a binary eutectic can be effected by addition of a solute element that has greatly different distribution coefficients or k values in the two phases of the eutectic. Under these conditions, differences in the temperatures at the solid-liquid interfaces of the two phases retard the growth of one phase with respect to the other.4 It has also been shown that increased undercooling favors a transition from a rodlike eutectic to a globular eutectic.17 A mechanism proposed for the transition from lamellar to rodlike eutectics depends on the concept of constitutional super cooling.18 The modification of eutectic alloys may be of interest for high-temperature service as well as at room temperature. Although "high-temperature eutectic alloys" may appear to be a contradiction in terms, many eutectic systems, including those studied in this work, have melting points in excess of 2400°F. One of the mechanisms by which high-temperature alloys are strengthened is dispersion of a relatively brittle phase such as an oxide, carbide, or an inter-metallic compound throughout a ductile matrix. For a given volume fraction of dispersed phase, strength is increased by decreasing the size and spacing of the dispersed particles.19&apos;20 Furthermore, room-temperature ductility may also be increased by changing the shape of a brittle dispersed phase from platelike to equiaxed or spheroidal.8 Overaging and redissolving of the secondary phase limit the maximum temperature to which precipitation-hardened alloys can be used. However, in a binary eutectic system, both phases coexist up to the melting point. Although all eutectic structures are not completely stable,21 a dispersion-hardened cast high-temperature alloy might result if a fine distribution of one of the eutectic phases could be obtained during solidification. An additional reason for interest in eutectic alloys is their excellent castability.22 Since eutectic alloys, like pure metals, freeze at a single temperature rather than over a range of temperatures, their castability is superior to solid-solution alloys with long liquidus to solidus ranges. The purpose of this research was to study the effects of small solute additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a number of high-melting-point eutectic compositions.
