Silver-lead-zinc replacement deposits occur in limestones of the anticlinal Caja range at Providencia, near Avalos, Zacatecas, Mexico. The description deals with intrusives, outcrops, preferred horizons, changes from bedding to fracture, control in depth, and variations in abundance and ratios of minerals throughout a vertical range of 500 m. THE purpose of this paper is to record a few field observations and accumulated office data concerning outcrops, relation of ore occurrences to intrusive and host rock, and mineral zoning. Reasons for some of the phenomena are not clear to the author so the facts are given with the hope that other investigators may be able to furnish the explanations. The Avalos unit of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., operates the Alicante, Bonanza, Providencia, Albarradon, San Eligio, Nazareno, Leona, Salaverna, and Santiago mines situated between Avalos railroad station and Concepcion del Oro on the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad in the State of Zacatecas, Mexico. Some of these mines are within Penoles property while others are on mining claims leased from the Compania Nazareno y Catasillas, S. A., Mazapil Copper Co., and the American Smelting and Refining Co. The main office and camp are at Providencia, about 170 km southwest of Monterrey, N. L., so the silver-lead-zinc mines of the district are usually referred to as the Providencia mines. The Aranzazu, Catarroyo, and Cabrestante copper-gold mines are situated a few kilometers to the southeast on the same mountain range near Con- cepcion del Oro, the name by which the camp is known. It is operated by the Mazapil Copper Co. The main theme in the following pages is a description of the silver-lead-zinc ore occurrences of the district. Rock Formations Sedimentary Rocks: Many competent geologists have contributed generously to an ample fund of information concerning the sedimentary columns of northern Mexico. Among them are Carlos Burck-hardt, E. Bose, L. B. Kellum, and R. W. Imlay. Carlos Burckhardt, who covered a number of extensive areas in many parts of the Mexican Republic, devoted years to mapping the geology of the Caja, Zuloaga, and Santa Rosa mountain ranges around Mazapil, Concepcion del Oro, and San Pedro de Ocampo, Zacatecas. TWO papers, "Calcium, Strontium, and Barium Metals," by Charles Hardy and Paul M. Tyler, and "The Mining of Gems and Ornamental Stones by American Indians," by Sydney H. Ball, were presented before the Rare Minerals and Metals group at its session Tuesday afternoon in the Auditorium. Donald M. Liddell, chairman, presided. Mr. Tyler summarized the first paper, outlining the uses, history, occurrence, manufacture, production and trade, markets and prices of the three metals. In discussion, in response to the chairman's query on "what are they doing in Russia with calcium, strontium, and barium," Guy C. Riddell replied that nothing is being done on a production basis. The great rare metals plant in Moscow is active, however, on other elements. "They are making radium chloride, uranium oxide, vanadium, cadmium, tungsten, molybdenum, selenium, antimony compounds; and mercury, nickel and arsenic are under production at interior plants. The rare metals plant is busily conducting research on beryllium, rhenium, lithium, bismuth, strontium and zirconium. These are the main rare metal activities. The electrolytic copper refinery at Copper Cliff, Ont., is operated by the Ontario Refining Co., Ltd. The associated companies behind the enterprise are the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd.; The American Metal Co.; The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd.; and Ventures, Ltd. The plant was the outgrowth of the rapid development of copper resources in the nickel-copper ores of the Frood and other great mines in the Sudbury district, and of the desire to have all primary production units grouped together as closely as possible. The refinery is near the intersection of the Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway. It is about one mile south of The International Nickel Company's smelter at Copper Cliff. The standard-gage track systems of the refinery and of the smelter are connected by a standard-gage timber railroad trestle that crosses the railway and the highway by means of steel girder spans. The Canadian National Railway has access to the plant by means of this trestle and the nickel company's tracks, so that the refinery has connections with both the Canadian Pacific and the Canadian National railways, as well as a direct connection with The International Nickel Company's smelter, from which the bulk of the copper to be refined is hauled by the latter's electric locomotives. Buildings The refinery (Fig. 1) covers approximately 60 acres, enclosed by an unscalable chain-link fence. The main buildings have a content of 23,000,000 cu. ft., with a total roof area of approximately 600,000 sq. ft. and near them are the substation, cooling pond and main standard-gage track system (Fig. 2). A ladder track for car storage extends 1200 ft. south of the coal-pulverizer tracks and the scale house is on this spur. The intake and pumphouse for fresh water supply are at Kelly Lake, about 3000 ft. south of the plant. FOR many years, you and your fellow members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers have devotedly and ably applied yourselves to the art of making iron and steel. having foremost in your minds the conservation of raw materials, suitable and efficient facilities, economical processes, and improved quality of product. For the past three strenuous years you have contributed wholeheartedly to meeting the problems of increased production. You have conducted scientific and technical investigations and research, recommended experiments. and gathered all the available and valuable information possible to gain the desired objectives. You have had many obstacles and difficulties to overcome. In the early days of your organization, there was some lack of co-operation from the industry itself-perhaps, for example, some failure to recognize the mutual advantages of free exchange of experiences and information. But regardless of any hindrances, you have made many and valuable contribution which have tended to make iron and steel manufacture leas of an art and more of a science.

SINCE the discussion on steel rails in America has forcibly drawn attention to the value of chemical analysis, if not as a necessary stipulation, at least as a guide to control the usual mechanical tests, some doubt has been thrown upon the accuracy of the analytical results obtained by different chemists. To any one having the least acquaintance with chemistry, it is quite clear that if exactly similar results are to be obtained from the same borings of steel, exactly the same methods must be used by the different analysts. Hence the necessity (if complications are to be avoided) of establishing what I may call standard or normal methods, to be used both by the inspectors and by the chemists at the works. Remembering that the application of chemistry to steelrail inspection is yet in its infancy, it is of great importance to possess a perfect acquaintance with the best methods in use. Being myself a grateful pupil of Professor Eggertz, of the School of Mines in Sweden, it occurred to me, two years ago, that I could not do better than start a laboratory of my own, and engage one of his pupils, Mr. Troilius, for the purpose of analyzing the steel borings from mechanically-tested rails, so that I might thus obtain without delay thoroughly accurate determinations. Moreover, in order to carry on the operations in perfect accordance with the methods used at the steel works in England and Germany, where I had to control the manufacture, I deemed it desirable to allow Mr. Troilius to go through a course of training at these works; and I gladly seize this opportunity of expressing my grateful acknowledgments to several works in England and in Germany for affording every facility for such an exchange of information as mas found necessary in arriving at the best analytical methods to be used.

SINCE my working life of 32 yr has been spent in and about the anthracite mines of the Hudson Coal Co., and the previous 4 yr in a college school of mines, I can write best about the safety program of a coal mining company. However, most of the suggestions, statements and practices mentioned herein are applicable to the members of a safety organization and program of almost any industry. It is realized that industrial officials actually interested in real safety work are fully acquainted with the requirements of a practical safety program. Therefore, for such persons there may be nothing new in this paper. The Hudson Coal Co. of Scranton, Pa., employs 7,000 men and produces 5,000,000 tons of anthracite annually at nine collieries scattered for a distance of 40 miles throughout the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys of northeastern Pennsylvania. For the past 17 yr of the above mentioned 32, I have been engaged in safety work as a safety inspector, assistant mine superintendent, and at present the safety engineer. I have also had the privilege of visiting coal and metal mines in other parts of the United States and Canada. We Americans are the most careless people in the world. If any one doubts this statement why are 100,000 of our people killed accidentally annually? Or why during the almost four years we were engaged in World War II were more of our people killed accidentally at home than were killed in our army, navy, marine corps, coast guard, and other services during the same period? We are careless everywhere in our homes, on the highway, at work and at play. The purpose of this paper is to outline the requisites of a safety department and its program to stop the accidents occurring to employees at work in mines or industrial plants. The first requisite for a safety program is that the management must be convinced of the need and value of a real safety program. By "management" is meant each department head from the president down. Otherwise a good safety department with a good safety program will not succeed because it will not have the proper personnel and equipment to work with, its rules and regulations will not be enforced, and the members of the safety department will be belittled in the eyes of most of the workmen and supervisors. Next, a safety engineer and his inspectors should have worked in the production end of the mines as workmen and also in an official capacity. They are then in a position to have practical and first hand knowledge of the accident hazards of the industry, how to prevent them, and in general the problems of both the workmen and officials. Some men are appointed as safety inspectors when they are physically unable to carry on as mine officials. Such men may know the safety end of the industry and even be safety-conscious, but if they are physically unable to be mine officials they are also physically unable to be safety inspectors, as a safety inspector in our mines must walk from 2 to 4 miles on each daily inspection-and visit each working

DISCUSSIONS of trade and commerce are generally more comprehensive today than in the past; the problems are approached with a vision unrestricted by national boundaries, and broad enough to comprise the entire world. The extent to which the limited viewpoint that has characterized past ages is yielding to an economy of world-wide scope is exemplified by the Atlantic Charter which blazes a trail in the direction of trade principles that aim to preserve the interest of each individual country in the commonwealth of nations. Its fourth article promulgated the principle that all nations should have access on equal terms to the trade and to the raw materials of the world which may be needed for their economic prosperity. Future developments in reciprocal international trade may have some effect upon the flow of nonmetallic minerals but such effects are not likely to be great because tariffs and trade policies have not affected that flow profoundly in the past. Nevertheless conditions may change and new problems may arise demanding important decisions. Sudden changes are not to be expected, but rather an orderly evolution in which national interests will merit due consideration in establishing broader policies.

(written discussion *).-The principle involved in the Crowe vacuum precipitation process is so elementary and the apparatus required is so simple, that the whole subject affords scant material for a technical discussion. As. one prominent Colorado metallurgist recently remarked when asked to contribute to this paper: "The Crowe process is the biggest step forward since the early clays of the cyanide process, but there is nothing to write about; just put it in your mill and try it." The writer confesses to a similar feeling, but having been closely identified with the process since its inception in 1916, he is perhaps in a position to at least comment on the theory involved and to record some of the results that have been achieved in actual practise. In practising the Crowe process, the solutions to be precipitated are first vacuumized in a suitable dispersion tower; that is, thin films of the liquid are subject to the action of a vacuum within a receiver. The 111th Meeting was held in San Francisco, Cal., Sept. 16 to 19, 1915. Sixty-eight technical papers were presented, and the attendance was over 400 members and guests. Iron-Ore Resources. In a paper presented to the Institute in 1897,* I discussed the iron-resources of the United States as then developed, calling attention to some principal sources upon which other countries depended. The following statement will give a general idea of the amounts, as compiled from the latest official records, of ores won, and metal produced, in the nations which are important contributors to the world's output. Unfortunately these are not all contemporaneous, since in some countries the statistics do not appear until after one or more years. The statement covers not only pig-iron and iron-ore, but also manganese-ore —the manganese mined being principally used in the production of spiegeleisen or ferro-manganese, and these alloys being generally included in the pig-iron output. CHANGES in coke hardness affect the working of the blast furnace, for soft coke is an obstacle to proper furnace operation. Soft coke is due to a low hydrogen-oxygen ratio in the coal charged; increasing this ratio increases the hardness of the coke. The best means of determining the hardness of coke is the combined tumbler and ball-mill. Soft coke is a great hindrance to proper blast-furnace operation and changes in coke hardness affect the working of the furnace. The best method of determining the hardness of coke is by using a combination tumbler-ball-mill. Soft coke is due to a low hydrogen-oxygen ratio in the coal charged. An increase of this ratio improves the hardness of the resulting coke. WHAT IS GOOD COKE? It is not always appreciated that the correct answer may be such a reliable forecast to the physical condition of the blast furnace, and incidentally its entire operation, that among the ordinary variations in other raw materials and also in operating conditions, it assumes a position of primary significance. Inasmuch as coke forms two-thirds of the total bulk of material charged, this assertion will not seem exaggerated, and in the subsequent discussion its applicability will be presented. Coke is the ideal blast-furnace fuel because it is strong and hard enough to resist the crushing and grinding effects of the furnace burden, and its porosity allows the ready passage of gas upward through the charge, and rapid combustion before the tuyeres. Coke deprived of its strength and with a cell structure physically frail and chemically susceptible to solution by carbon dioxide, has its chief asset eliminated. When the melting zones are approached the fluid cinder trickling toward the hearth will envelope the small pieces of coke and form a sticky mass that will retard the free passage of gas. OPERATIONS at the cement plant of the Permanente Corporation, in the hills about 45 miles south of San Francisco and 12 miles west of San Jose, are interesting to the members because of the adoption of modern hydrometallurgical methods for handling and beneficiating raw materials. Closed-circuit grinding, classification, hydro-separation, flotation, agitation, and thickening are familiar terms at this cement plant. These methods make it possible to process refractory limestone into suitable materials for the manufacture of modern cements. Construction of the plant, having originally a design capacity of 7000 bbl. of cement per day, was started in June 1939, and the first clinker was ground on the following Christmas Day. At present the capacity is about 12,000 bbl. of finished cement per 24 hr., most of the production being low-heat cement.† About 3130 tons of limestone, 620 tons 0f clay and 100 tons of gypsum are required daily for this output. Occasionally iron oxide is added to the clay to obtain the desired composition. This, together with the gypsum, is purchased from outside sources. Up to the present time, the corporation has produced low-heat, normal, moderate heat, moderate-sulphate-resisting, high-early-strength, oil-well, modified-oil-well, and plastic cements. Most of the present production is for Shasta Dam, near Redding, Calif., the total demand being 5,800,000 bbl, of cement. ALTHOUGH the shooting of oil wells for the purpose of increasing production has been practiced since 1866, present-day shooting technique has been arrived at almost wholly by a process of trial and error. The difficulties attending either a theoretical analysis of the problem or an experimental attack become apparent when one actually embarks on a theoretical investigation or attempts to formulate an intelligent experimental program. The literature on the subject consists mainly of descriptions of current practice, scattered eye-witness accounts of events following the shooting of a well, and vague speculations on the mechanical processes involved. In contrast to quarry blasting, the results of oil-well shooting cannot be determined by means of visual inspection, and it is perhaps for this reason that only one attempt at what approaches a direct experimental attack has been reported in the literature.1 In these experiments, charges of liquid nitroglycerin were exploded in holes drilled in a sandstone outcrop. In order to observe the character and extent of the resulting fractures, the rock was blasted away so as to expose the original shot holes. After all this had been done it was found impossible to distinguish the fracturing due to the original shots from that due to the subsequent blasting. The enlargement of the holes due to the pulverizing action of the shots was. measured and an attempt was made to determine the effectiveness of 'sand tamping. Only five shots were made and few definite conclusions could be drawn. Some small-scale experiments to determine the effect of tamping were performed by Snelling and Hall,2 Small charges (20 grams) of dynamite were detonated at the bottom of a cylindrical hole in a lead block and the resulting enlargement of the hole was taken as a measure of the effectiveness of the explosion. It was found that when the shot was tamped with a sufficient amount of sand or clay, the volume enlargement was approximately double that found when no stemming had been used. The properties of the explosives have been the subject of much study by the manufacturers, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and various other agencies. For example, velocities of detonation for many commercial explosives are to be found in the Blasters' Handbook, issued by the Du Pont company. Many other properties are given in a treatise on the subject by Naoum.3 The shock wave that accompanies the detonation of high explosives has been studied photographically by Payman4 and others. The hydrodynamical theory of the shock wave has received much attention, and an extended theoretical treatment is given by Bateman.5 Two aspects of the well-shooting problem will be considered in this paper; namely, the fracturing of subsurface strata, and possible damage to casing. With respect to the former of these, several calculations have been made giving the stresses in the rocks surrounding the shot. H. M. BOYLSTON, Cambridge, Mass.-I would first like to ask what machine Capt. Bellis used to make his tests on impact strength. I have made some tests with the Charpy impact machine, the specimen being supported at both ends and nicked in the middle, and, find that the results do not always agree with those obtained by the Izod and other machines. I would also like to ask what effect the composition and heat treatment of the tool steel had on the drilling of his rifle barrels, as compared, with the heat treatment of the steel itself? I notice that the analysis of the composition of steel used shows sulphur 0.050 and phosphorus 0.065; I should like to ask how those high limits of sulphur and phosphorus came to be allowed? I have some data which lead me to feel pretty certain that those high limits make for very unsafe steel in rifle barrels. It has never been explained to the satisfaction of all of us, why the manganese is so high: 1.22 per cent. I believe several reasons have been stated; among them, that it is high in order to compensate for the high sulphur, and also to increase the elastic limit and improve other physical properties of steel. Lastly, I wish to ask whether Capt. Bellis has tried any different methods of heat-treating his steel rifle barrels? Apparently these were all heat-treated before machining; has he had any experience with heat-treatment after machining, especially after drilling? Those questions may seem somewhat outside of the range of this -paper, but they are important, and if Captain Bellis can give us any information, it will be very helpful. Dr. J. A. MATHEWS,* Syracuse, N. Y.-The same subject was discussed here last year, and the earlier papers by Dr. Carle Hayward seem to indicate that nothing was gained by the length of time of 'tempering. (It should be borne in mind that his results were based upon electrical and magnetic measurements and not upon tensile tests.) That idea has been accepted as gospel by steel workers, until late years, and particu-larly in connection with alloy steels, on which there is no question that the effect of time of tempering is very marked.

Silica bricks were not used because the ovens were built under German design and management and it has not been the practice in Europe to use silica brick nor has it been necessary, on account of their lower heats and slower coking time as compared with the present American practice. Bethlehem, Pa., and being the principal cause of the failure of these ovens. This statement having come to the attention of the Didier-March Co. of Perth Amboy, N. J., who furnished the firebrick used in the construction in the original ovens referred to, at the Lehigh Coke Works, near So. Bethlehem, Pa., their. manager, Geo. A. Balz has corresponded with me, and wishes to have placed on record a general denial of the statement referred to. As a matter of justice to the manufacturers of the firebrick, it is but right that their statement should be given as much publicity as my statement which has been objected to, and I take pleasure in placing upon record the statement of Mr. Balz, general manager for Didier-March Co., extracted from a letter to me dated Jan. 14, as follows: "The

IN reality, the Butte district is the birthplace of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., for it was here that strength was gathered and means provided for later expansions of the Company. The Butte district was organized at a miners' meeting on Aug. 20, 1866, primarily for gold placer-mining operations. Substantial amounts of placer gold were recovered from gulch gravels during the period 1862 to 1868. The earliest lode claim locations in the district were recorded in July and August 1864. JOHN MARBLE, mining engineer, coal operator, philanthropist, member of the Institute since 1879, vice-president in 1903-04, has been paid the well deserved tribute of Honorary Membership. The presentation of the diploma was made at a luncheon in New York on Feb. 13, the citation reading: "In recognition of his work as an engineer and administrator of mines and his services to mining engineering education." Within the last month Lafayette University dedicated the new John Markle Mining Engineering Building, the gift of the eminent alumnus for whom it is named. In addition, Mr. Markle has contributed a maintenance fund for the carrying out of far-reaching plans for improving the mining courses to be given at the Institution. One of his theories is that quality rather than quantity of engineering graduates is the need of the profession. John Markle was born in Hazleton, Pa., in 1858. He received his degree of M. E. at Lafayette in 1880, and married Mary Estelle Robinson in New York City in 1884. Since 1880 he has been associated continuously with the firm of G. B. Markle & Co., and its successor companies. He has also been an official of numerous other important companies, although he is now retired from active business life.

In the debate between miners and ecologists, our industry has at last begun to get some of its story told. I have been told many times that it is hopeless to even try to get our side across. Some are sure that no one will believe us even when our cause is just. My reply would be that we have to tell the truth; again, again, and again. We will never convert a fanatic, but we must try to reach the reasonable and thinking people. I am encouraged because more of us are trying. Various mining companies here in Arizona have bought newspaper space to set forth some of the facts around our local environmental problems. The Arizona Mining Association co-sponsored a symposium in March: Mining and Ecology in the Arid Environment. The symposium program included tours arranged with local mining companies. The participants saw an acid plant, an acid leaching operation, an alluvial tailings dike, a tailings pond, a smelter, and a couple of open pit mines. This wouldn't phase you until you realized that half the visitors were ecologists, watershed and wild- life managers, and other assorted conservationists. It took a lot of guts. I am proud that we had that much confidence. As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and they is us!" Actually, we met the enemy and they were just like us-concerned.
