STUDIES in the high-temperature separations chemistry of thorium-uranium fuels are complicated by the corrosive nature of these molten metal systems at 1700°C. Separations research pointed toward the removal of fission products from irradiated alloys has included a frozen salt-bed technique which minimizes container reaction with molten metal. The procedure consists of high-frequency induction melting of the metal sample which is supported by a vertical column of unmelted salt. The molten alloy melts its immediate salt environment and as it slowly falls down through the column, many of the fission-product poisons are transferred into the fused salt environment. The molten salt-metal zone is encompassed at all times by unmelted salt, preventing container contact. EXPERIMENTAL Experimental methods were separated into three parts: salt-bed preparation, melting, and analytical evaluation. A) Bed Preparation—The procedure for casting calcium-fluoride briquettes was to compress the powdered salt at 5,000 to 10,000 psi and place this compact in a graphite crucible. This assembly was inserted into a vacuum system and surrounded by an alumina crucible as well as molybdenum, tantalum, or stainless-steel foil thermal-radiation shields. The pressure was reduced and the crucible heated under vacuum to about 800°C with the fore pump operating. Argon was then admitted to about 0.8 atm and heating continued until the CaF2 had melted 5 min at the melting point seemed satisfactory). Apparatus used included a 1-in. graphite crucible with 1/8-in. walls, 1-in. ID in a 2-in. induction coil, and a 6-kw Ajax high-frequency converter. B) Melting—Calcium-fluoride briquettes, 1 in. in diam and 1/2 to 1 in. thick, were prepared and vertically stacked to obtain the desired column length. An irradiated alloy sample (nut = 10") was placed on top of the salt column and the assembly was connected to the vacuum system. After evacuation of 5 to 10 , purified argon was admitted and the system flushed twice. The final argon pressure was about 0.8 atm. The sample was heated by induction at a power of about 6.5 kw. It then melted its way down through the salt and freely dropped into a small alumina crucible. Distortions caused by dip on five-spot sweep pattern were determined by visual experiments on a model composed of parallel plates of glass with holes drilled at the well positions. This model war designed to simulate a reservoir depleted of its primary oil and containing a gas phase. Prior to interference, it was found that the injected fluid took a nearly circular shape about the injection well for the cases studied. However, these circles moved down-dip considerably under the influence of gravity. It was concluded that pattern flooding should be practical for many dipping reservoirs. A quantitative measure is given of how much the well position should be altered to allow for dip. Experimental deternzinarions of injectivity showed this to be about the same in a dipping reservoir as in a horizontal one. INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of the Pacific Coast area, Shell Oil Co., where a pilot water flood in a dipping reservoir was being carried out at the time this paper was in preparation. Prior to the undertaking of this flood there had been considerable speculation as to how gravity would distort a flood pattern in a dipping reservoir. The thought was expressed in some quarters that a five-spot flood would not be applicable to a dipping reservoir because the flood pattern would elongate in the direction of dip and would never form a "seal" around each five-spot. If the flood pattern elongated sufficiently, both the oil and the water might flow largely downdip rather than into the pattern producers. In view of the importance of the California water floods, it was deemed important to determine the effects of gravity on a five-spot pattern in a dipping reservoir. Previous work had also been carried out in this laboratory,1 but only for the single-fluid case. The present investigation extends these results to multifluid cases. Several sets of pictures of flood fronts are presented so that the process can be visualized. From these pictures, curves are obtained which show the correct drilling position for achieving equal times of oil-bank breakthrough. Several injectivity curves are also presented which may aid in prediction of injection rate. ASSUMPTIONS The present results were obtained with a model composed of two parallel plates of glass spaced about 1 mm apart. When the inertial forces are small, as in these experiments, the flow between the plates follows Darcy's law and is analogous to flow through porous media. In using these plates, it is not possible to scale effects of capillarity correctly as regards a transition zone between injected and displaced fluid. Calculations show, however, that effects of such capillarity should not be important in determining the gross flooding pattern in the field. In fact, in this model the capillary forces tend to circularize the pattern to a greater degree than in the field. To preserve a large ratio between the viscous forces and the circularizing capillary forces in the laboratory model, viswus glycerine was used as the flooding liquid and the rate of flooding was very high. The circularizing force is believed negligible in these experiments. In addition to the effect of the surface tension y, which tends to circularize the pattern, another capillary force must be considered. DEVELOPMENT OF MONEY AND MONEY STANDARDS This chapter is concerned with the rise, and then the decline and fall, of gold and silver as monetary metals. As a first step in tracing the history of this process, it is necessary to consider the nature of money, and the manner in which different forms of money have developed over the centuries. The origins of money go back into deepest antiquity. Once men ceased to be pure nomads and entered into even a rudimentary form of society such as clans or tribes, money had to be invented The first step was barter as farmers or hunters swapped their surplus products for things produced by artisans such as shoes, clothing, and simple tools. But such barter trading is inconvenient even in primative societies It is difficult to match up buyer and seller at any point in time There are problems in arriving at viable and acceptable terms of exchange. The accumulation of savings-wealth-is complicated. No one can be sure that a pile of furs, or wheat, or certainly fish or game can be used in the future to trade for other goods or services. So even prehistoric man saw the need for money. There was a need first for something to serve as a medium of exchange This was an essential first step in the process of specialization-or the division of labor. A farmer, a hunter, or a shoemaker could only devote his full efforts to his trade if he could be sure that he could exchange his surplus production for the other things he needed for existence. This required a medium of exchange-a form of money which would be broadly acceptable. Money was needed for two other reasons Some system of market prices was essential to facilitate the exchange of goods and services. This required some form of common denominator-some standard of value-to govern the exchange process. And there was also need for something to serve as a store of value, a place to put any excess production (savings) with the assurance that it can be used in the future to acquire a general range of goods and services. As a result, money, in one form or another, developed at a very early state in civilization. Yet the centuries have been marked by a search for a form of money which will possess in full measure all of the attributes in money-a reliable and universally acceptable medium of exchange, standard of value, and store of value. -A wide variety of things have been used as money at one time or another: shells, beads, stones, feather, metals, and even the teeth of sharks and dogs. Some of these things were obviously of little or no practical value. They were used because people had confidence in their continued acceptance as a medium of exchange. In a zirconium {1121} twins tend to have coherelzt boundaries and thus do not usually taper to a point when they intersect a grain boundary. Under the proper conditions, a (1121) twin may deform a boundary in such a manner as to clearly rcveal the twinning shear. Measurements of these grain-bounrlary rotatzons yield a value of 0.63 for the (1151) twinning shear. The magnitude of the observed shear and its shear sense are in excellent agreement with the assumption that the second undis-torted plme (K2) for this form of twinning is the basal plane (0002). The present value of the tzvinninz shear, which is approximately three limes larger than Rapperport&apos;s value? is in excellent agreement with reported results of Sokuskii and Prolsenko.5 RECENTLY westlake&apos; reported a study of the twinning modes of zirconium based on ~ap~er~ort&apos;s2 values for the twinning elements. He observed that two of the modes, (1012) and {1122), can be explained by relatively simple dislocation models. A workable model for (1121) twinning, however, proved to be very complex and questionable. Because Rapperport&apos;s second undistorted plane, (K2), for (1121) twinning has large indices, {ll2l6), it is possible that the difficulty in defining a model for (1121) twinning lies in an incorrect value for K2. A measurement of this twinning element has therefore been made, using a method based on observations of the shear displacement of grain boundaries at positions where they are intersected by (1121) twins. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The zirconium specimens were deformed in tension on an Instron machine either at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (77ºK), or prestrained at liquid nitrogen temperature and then further deformed at room temperature. Straining at 77°K was employed in order to nucleate (1 121) twins in large numbers, since simple ropm-temperature tensile deformation favors (1012) twinning. Specimens were machined from 1/2-in.-thick plate. The material was arc-melted sponge zirconium annealed to an ASTM grain size 4 and containing, in parts per million, 380 Fe, 880 0, <40 Hf, 32 N, and < 5 H. The specimen gage length and diameter were 1.25 and 0.130 in., respectively. To insure a gage section initially free of twins, the last 60 thousandths of the specimen diameter was removed by acid machining.

SOME time ago the writer needed a cheap, light, and portable hydraulic lift or crane, that would be universal in its application, and that might -be suspended from crane-arms, overhead tramways, beams, etc., and serve all the uses of ordinary hydraulic cranes. This was accomplished by the use of a closed cylinder of wrought-iron hydraulic pipe, provided at its top with the ordinary gland and stuffing-box, through the centre of which passed another similar pipe of slightly smaller diameter, forming in effect the ordinary plunger of the regular hydraulic crane. Over the top of this centre pipe or plunger or piston a disk of iron is placed with two arms projecting several inches from the rim, as may be required. Through these arms long iron rods pass, one on each. side, and are fastened in place by nuts screwed to a bearing immediately above and below the disk. These rods also pass through the enlarged head of the lift down through a casting which closes the bottom of the cylinder, which, at the same time, gives them a bearing, and they terminate at a point below the casting equal to the height of the lift of the crane. The rods at this point pass through a disk similar to the top disk and are similarly secured in place. A common hook arranged with a swivel passes through the centre of the disk, and on this hook the load is suspended. For a stationary hanging crane the apparatus is suspended by two rods passing through the head of the lift in similar manner to the two already described, at right angles to the first, and of sufficient length to let the first set play between them and rise to the full height which the plunger will allow. The second set of rods terminates in an iron disk similar to the one at the bottom of the first set, and a hook through this in turn suspends the entire apparatus. In order to adapt the lift to an overhead tramway, single or double, in place of the suspending rods, a projection or offset is arranged on each side of the head of the lift and a journal cast in, allowing the lift to be suspended on pivots arranged as follows

The purposes of this statement are to define a problem that exists in regard to the estimation of developed petroleum reserves, to analyze the problem in an abstract manner, and to discuss it as an introduction to certain papers that follow. The problem is to devise and develop a suitable procedure to permit more accurate estimates of developed petroleum reserves. Part of the problem is to make such estimates available earlier in the life of any particular pool. The problem of securing more accurate estimates of developed petroleum reserves existed prior to curtailment of production. With curtailment, however, the problem became acute, some of the more prominent reasons being as follows: 1. The standard method of estimation depended on production-decline curves. This method is inapplicable while curtailment prevails and available methods arc insufficient. 2. The retarding influence imposed by wide open flow conditions upon overdevelopment is absent. Great losses of capital by overdevelopment can now occur before realization of the true situation occurs, or before effective steps can be taken to stop such wastage. This increases the need for early, accurate estimates. 3. Above-ground stocks have diminished and the equivalent of such supply tends more and more to be retained underground in the natural reservoirs. It becomes increasingly necessary to know accurately the amount of these stocks. To direct attention to an additional point of different nature: improved accuracy of reserve estimation can be obtained only by closer scrutiny of the factors that determine recovery. This examination and the resulting efforts to measure the effect of these factors in terms of ultimate recovery must tend to improve ultimate recovery. The statements regarding the acute nature of the problem also indicate to some extent the importance of the problem and the necessity of finding a solution. Developed reserves of the industry, and of individual opera-tors, are one of the great factors that properly should determine explora-

The application of gas or air under pressure to obtain more oil from a sand which has been practically exhausted by ordinary production methods has been practiced to a limited extent for many years. Until recently such methods were confined to the Eastern fields, principally those of Ohio and West Virginia, where in many cases the production obtained after applying pressure for a few years was nearly equal to the total production prior to that time which had been obtained by the usual production methods. As early as 1917, J. 0. LewisL called attention to this method of increasing the recovery of oil and cited the phenomenal results obtained by H. E. Smith, I. L. Dunn and 0. C. Dunn, who pioneered the application of air or gas pressure recovery methods. With this information available it would appear that other oil-producing sections of the country have been extremely slow to realize the advantages of repressuring. However, after a few successful projects in the Mid-Continent area, the oil producers appreciated t&apos; e value of this method for obtaining further and profitable production from their practically exhausted leases and are now making extensive use of it. In general, it has been the practice to apply pressure to the sands when production has declined to a small yield per well. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the advantages which may be expected from returning gas under pressure to the oil sands during the early stages of development, before the rock pressure has been dissipated and the gas exhausted, and to stimulate discussion of this subject on which comparatively little actual field data are available. The Function of Gas Gas associated with or dissolved in the oil is the source of energy causing movement of the oil to the well. When this energy is dissipated production ceases. Single-phase aluminum containing 1 to 600ppm copper was studied in 7 to 26 pct HCl. The corrosion rate in the autocatalytic stage was resolved into a constant intrinsic component and an acdelerating autocatalytic component, and attention was focused on the part of this stage where the corrosion rate could be described by a simple empirical relation. Autocatalytic corrosion in this period was localized and its rate increased rapidly with copper content and with the strength and chlaride content of the acid. The effects of adding cupric ion to 16 pct HCI were functionally and quantitatively inconsistent with the autocatalytic rates observed. A theory of these rates was given based on the deposition in nzetallic contact with the aluminum of part of the copper introduced by corrosion. It has long been known in a general way that aluminum containing sufficient copper suffers in hydrochloric acid an autocatalytic acceleration of corrosion resulting from the introduction into the acid of copper ions and their reduction on the specimen as elemental copper, which provides cathodes of low hydrogen overvoltage.&apos;-3 In a previous paper, this phenomenon was identified in single-phase high-purity material at copper levels as low as 20 ppm and an empirical equation describing autocatalytic corrosion rates in 16 and 20 pct HC1 was presented. In the present work the range of acid strength and chemistry studied was extended, a more accurate empirical equation for the autocatalytic rate was determined, and a theory of this rate was formulated. A major source of interest in this system is the intergranular corrosion, which is also strongly influenced by copper content,= and an objective of the present work on general corrosion was to provide a basis for studying the role of copper content in intergranular corrosion, which is experimentally much less accessible.

Chemical processing of ores has gained new im¬petus in recent years. The reasons are many. They range from the need to process ores that are difficult to beneficiate to the avoidance of pollution. Although many think of chemical processing as a hydrometallurgical operation there are other techniques. An example is chlorination. Chlorination, although examined and discarded by many investigators, is again being considered as a means of extracting uranium1, treatment of silver-lead ores2, and the recovery of base metals from pyrite cinder and ores3. Segregation roasting of copper and nickel ores, a process similar to chlorination, is another chemical treatment being revived.

These may be grouped into three general methods: 1) precedent, 2) instrumentation, and 3) theoretical analysis. The first two are covered in the literature where their advantages, as well as limitations, are discussed.&apos;9&apos; Generally a theoretical approach combines structural geology with engineering mechanics. The former deals with the geodynamic causes of residual stresses (stresses not related to overburden weight) and presents interesting, but controversial, views.&apos;" A general and useful conclusion, however, can be drawn - vertical residual stresses are much less prevalent than horizontal. THE classification and preparation of non-ferrous scrap metals is a subject of interest to every individual and corporation that employs in its processes of manufacture non-ferrous metals and alloys and accumulates in such manufacture scrap from these materials for disposition in the form of turnings, borings, short ends, punchings, clippings, grindings, washings, etc. All too frequently the disposition of such scrap is left to individuals who have no knowledge of the subject either from a metallurgical or a commercial standpoint, or both. Much money is thus lost which with a little more intelligent effort might be saved, and in this day of fierce competition and small profits such an opportunity cannot be ignored. There are mines that have lost the ore chute faulted, When the ore&apos;s forever lost to view, But the mines that fill my heart with sunshine, Are the mines that I sold to you. -Anonymous INTRODUCTION The preceding chapters have discussed, in various degrees of detail, the primary considerations necessary to perform a cash flow analysis of a mining-related investment opportunity. Although the previous discussions regarding the manipulations, calculations, and interrelationships of the various components of the pro forma income statement were illustrated in the text, many individuals are un- familiar with the format and appearance of a final spread sheet for the evaluation of a mining property. As a result, it seems appropriate to conclude this book with an abbreviated case study of an actual mine property (currently in production) showing the cash flow analysis and some back-up data. Obviously all of the supporting data and calculations for the case study presented cannot be provided; however, reference is made to the major assumptions utilized and to the appropriate procedures employed in the calculations, as described elsewhere in the text. The problem associated with using any case study for illustrative purposes is that one tends to be overwhelmed by detail. For instance, specific costs, prices, expenditure timings, and other variable values may be challenged because they either do not conform to one&apos;s expectations or are not consistent with specific operating experiences. When this occurs the instructional value of the problem becomes obscured. The purpose of most case studies, and particularly the one presented in this chapter, is to expose the student to the methodology, procedure, and format associated with performing a cash flow analysis of a mining property. It is not to laboriously wade through the specific details associated with operating and capital cost development, mine plans, or equipment schedules. It should be noted, how- ever, that the values represented in this case study result from specific mine plans, operating procedures, equipment spreads, manpower requirements, and other en-
