I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to a new form of drawing-board trestle. With the ordinary four-legged trestle, commonly used, one has not the means of adjusting the height of the board to the draughtsman. To obviate this inconvenience, and at the same time to enable one to incline the board, I have devised an arrangement of curved and straight slots and thumb-screws, by means of which the board can be raised three or more inches, and placed at any desired angle of inclination on either side. Figures 2, 3 (Plate I) show side and end elevations of the trestle for a single board, and Figure 4 for two boards. The latter form is adapted for use in schools, or where it is desired to economize space.

When the nucleation of silicon on a sapphire substrate is accomplished by gradually decreasing the substrate temperature while subjecting it to a constant impingement rate of hydrogen and silicon tetrachloride, the resulting deposit is characterized by widely separated islands of silicon scattered over an "open sea" of sapphire. Analysis shows that nucleation takes place mainly on sites of large adsorption energy, about 85 kcal per mole, and small surface concentration, about 108 cm-2. Crystal growth proceeds rapidly on these nuclei and results in enough depletion of Sicl4 from the ambient gas to suppress further nucleation. The technological importance of single-crystal films on dielectric substrates has prompted considerable work on the deposition of silicon on sapphire. This paper is concerned with the deposition of silicon, by the reduction of silicon tetrachloride with hydrogen, onto heated sapphire substrates. The apparatus consisted of a temperature-controlled container for the silicon tetrachloride along with gas lines and flow meters necessary to convey a hydrogen-silicon tetrachloride mixture to a reaction chamber constructed of quartz tubing. Heat for the substrate was provided by means of an inductively heated graphite susceptor. The observations pertinent to the present discussion were made with an American Optical Co. high-temperature microscope which allowed us to make motion pictures of the deposition process at a magnification of approximately 50 times. Two main categories of experiments were carried out: one on determination of critical condensation temperatures and the other on the deposition of epitaxial silicon films on the sapphire substrates. Critical condensation temperatures were determined in the traditional way by raising the substrate temperature well above that at which condensation could be expected at the impingement rates being studied and then gradually lowering the temperature until the condensation of the first silicon was observed. This was done initially with ellipsometry-type detection but it was soon discovered that the deposits were occurring as widely separated islands and groups of islands scattered over an "open sea" of sapphire. We have called these archipelago formations. They were most easily detected by optical microscopy. Data gathered from experiments of this type have been collected in Table I. Motion pictures of the formation of archipelago patterns show that the nucleation period lasts about 10 sec if the substrate temperature and impingement rate are kept constant. Essentially all of the nuclei are formed in a few seconds and all subsequent silicon deposition merely adds to the size of the established nuclei. After an archipelago formation has matured at a given substrate temperature and impingement rate, it is very difficult to stimulate any further nucleation in the open space between islands. Lowering the substrate temperature will occasionally stimulate nucleation but increasing the impingement rate hardly ever produces any more new nuclei. It should also be emphasized that the nucleation rates appear to be very small, about 104 cm-2 sec-1. They will receive special attention in the analysis section. Another series of experiments was performed employing a systematic variation of substrate temperatures and impingement rates approximating those expected to produce epitaxy. Sapphire substrates with surfaces normal to the 2233 direction were used. In contrast to the procedure that produces archipelago patterns, these films were deposited by raising the substrate temperature to a desired value at which time the silicon tetrachloride and hydrogen flow was begun. Of course, these depositions produced mainly films that were continuous. After removal from the deposition chamber, the substrate and silicon film were examined microscopically to determine the nature of the deposit and by X-ray diffraction to determine the extent to which a single-crystal film had been achieved. Results of these experiments are summarized in Table 11. Of interest for the present analysis is the fact that epitaxy appears to be confined to a fairly narrow temperature range between about 1050" and 1150°C. MANY of the studies of intermetallic compounds containing uranium were performed during the early 1940's under the aegis of the Manhattan Project. Subsequently, much of this work was declassified and published after 1949. In some instances this early work, completed with relatively impure materials, represents the only source of X-ray diffraction powder data available in the literature. In the case of the intermetallic compound U,Fe some discrepancies in the powder pattern exist in the literature. Since this compound has been prepared in this laboratory, it is believed that the publication of the indexed powder pattern would help clarify the conflict in the literature. In studies of the U-Fe system, Gordon and Kauf-mannl and Grogan and Clews2 independently reported the intermetallic compound U,Fe in 1950. The crystal structure was described by Baenziger, Rundle, Snow, and Wilson3 in 1950. It is isostructural with U,Mn, U,Ni, and U,Co and crystallizes in a body-centered tetragonal lattice. The lattice constants determined by Baenziger et al. are: giving an X-ray density = 17.7 g cm-3 for 4 mol per unit cell. The compound used in this study was prepared by melting a stoichiometric mixture of the constituent metals in an argon-arc furnace using a nonconsum-mable tungsten electrode. Before the argon of 99.98 pct purity was introduced into the furnace, it was passed through CaC1, to remove water vapor and afterwards through a stainless steel tube containing calcium turnings heated at 600°C for the removal of nitrogen and oxygen. THE papers by G. F. Loughlin and I. A. Ettlinger discussed the distribution of formations and ore-bodies in two of the main mining districts of the Southwest. The convergence of the deeper orebodies at Cripple Creek points to their common hypogene ori-gin, as do the occurrences of the copper ores of, central Arizona. E. L. Bruce described the areas in southwestern On-tario around Red Lake and Woman Lake, another prom-ising gold district. Of special interest was a series of lantern slides showing the use of power-driven boats and of hydroplanes as means of transportation. Within a few years, no doubt; such devices will revolutionize the mining industry and reconnaissance mapping in these relatively inaccessible areas. Much interest was evinced in the paper by J. W. Finch on "Sedimentary Metalliferous Deposits of the Red Beds." It was written as a caution to people at-tempting to mine these deposits. The discussion of the chemical equations presented in the paper brought out the fact that a large amount of study of such ores is necessary before we shall be able to write equations to explain their formation. Especially pertinent were the discussions by David White as to the relation of decay-ing plant tissue to metalliferous deposits and the color of sediments; also the point brought out by T. S. Lover-ing that chemical compounds produced by bacteria may greatly affect the deposition and reorganization of sedi-mentary metalliferous deposits.

As in organic nature certain animal and vegetable forms have undergone modifications, and thus, as it were, fitted themselves to live in a new environment, so it has been found possible in certain instances to form new metallic combinations which are practically immune to the natural conditions that exist on the earth at the present time. A few of the metals, such as gold, silver, and the metals of the platinum group, are found native, but the commoner heavy metals are nearly always found in the form of oxides or sulphides. For a number of years I have made experiments with a view to finding certain metallic combinations or alloys which would not only resist oxidation and other harmful influences, but would also possess valuable physical properties, which would render them fit for special service. The first decisive step made in this direction was the discovery of an alloy of nickel and chromium in 1898. The properties of this alloy have already been described in a previous paper.' Immediately following the discovery of the nickel-chromium alloy, I produced an alloy of cobalt and chromium, which has likewise been described in the reference given, but the range of proportion between the cobalt and chromium is so great, and the combination is modified to such a marked degree by the introduction of other substances, that I have felt justified in reading another paper on this subject, describing more fully my researches in this particular direction. M. A. SCHEIL (presented in written form).-Messrs. Franks, Binder and Brown are to be congratulated for the splendid paper that they have presented. We have not made stress-corrosion tests with the cantilever type of specimen which they describe, but it is well known that a uniform stress across a certain portion of the gage length can be obtained with such a specimen. This type of specimen would appear quite expensive to make. The writer was interested in the authors' remarks concerning the erratic results obtained from specimens with cold sheared edges. It might be of general interest to record here some results we obtained with annealed sheet N4 in. thick of type 304 stainless steel. After specimen No. 4 had been exposed 65 days without any signs of cracking we applied a strain gage and measured the stress as 25,810 psi. This value is considerably higher than we find for some of the type 347 stainless alloys and suggests that 18-8 might have a different threshold value for stress-corrosion cracking than 18-8 columbium. The test data in Table I show that strain caused by cold work or polishing has a pronounced effect in lowering the time for failure. In my paper I showed values of 8 hr. and 17 hr. to stress crack cold-rolled type 301 stainless steel stressed beyond the yield point. This steel contained 8.31

A leastmsquare analysis procedure has been developed and applied for the study of the deviations in estimations of oil in place as given by the material-balance equations. The data used were those obtained from field observations on the Jones sand in the Schuler pool, Arkansas, and the Monroe dolomite in the Reed City pool, Michigan. Possible effects of water intrusion were taken into account by expressing the cumulative water influx in terms of various functions previously proposed in the literature. Formulas were developed and values calculated for the minimum deviations and minimal percentage deviations in the calculated volumes of oil in place from the average values, as could be obtained by suitable choice of the water encroachment and initial gas-cap volume parameters. The results show that the fluctuations in these calculated volumes are very insensitive to the values chosen for the rate of water intrusion and initial gas-cap volume, and hence cannot be safely used in discriminating between spurious values for these parameters and such as actually pertain to the producing reservoirs. Moreover, the exact form of the water-intrusion function seems to have but little effect on the fluctuations in the computed oil in place. Accordingly, it is concluded that the material-balance method does not of itself provide a satisfactory criterion for determining the basic physical unknowns of producing reservoirs or in making conclusive decisions regarding the production mechanism, unless independently established geological control data are available for eliminating unreasonable values for the reservoir parameters, even though they may still satisfy the material-balance formulas. If, however, from core or logging data the initial oil in place and the gas-cap volume can be established in advance, the material-balance formulas can be inverted to find the water intrusion. Moreover, by determining by such calculations the water-intrusion coefficient, the iuture production performance can then be predicted by the aid of the materiaI-balance formulas for specified operating conditions. This type of application may be of particular value in predicting the results of Pressure-maintenance operations. Introduction The evaluation of the forces acting upon an oil reservoir is a problem of considerable interest to the operator as an aid in determining the proper method of operation for the reservoir to obtain an optimum recovery of oil. In many pools, the nature and magnitude of the forces acting upon the reservoir remain unknown until an appreciable amount of ultimate recovery is obtained. To be of value to the operator, a reliable interpretation of reservoir performance should be available in the early life of the pool to permit an optimum plan of operation. Progress has been made in an understanding of reservoir behavior and the importance of the different factors involved. The material-balance method of estimating oil in place has been proposed as a tool in analyzing reservoir-performance problems.l The solution of such problems by this method ordinarily involves two or more unknown values relating to the nature of the reservoir, and the results

ABSTRACT Berea and Bandera sandstone samples were impacted with both 3/4-in. and 1/2-in. long wedges, each having a 60° included angle and a 0.05-in. flat, at various confining pressures, with borehole and pore pressures held fixed at atmospheric pressure. Samples were saturated with air, water, glycerine-water, solirol, mineral oil and soltrol-mineral oil mixtures to obtain a wide range of pore fluid viscosity. Penetration depth was held constant at 0.1 in. Dry and soltrol-mineral oil-saturated Berea samples were impacted at depths of penetration from 0.01 to 0.04 in. under 1,000 psi confining pressure to study crater initiation. Results indicate that viscosity of the pore fluid is influential primarily during the early stages of crater formation. Differences in bit force, crater volume and blow energy for tests parallel and perpendicular to bedding were significant, but decreased as the stress state was elevated. Crater volume, blow energy and bit force were nonlinearly related with depth of penetration. Crater volume was nonlinear with energy of blow. Fixed-penetration tests on saturated Berea yielded greater crater volume than did similar tests on dry samples. Differences in the nature of deformation for low values of bit penetration were noted between saturated and unsaturated samples. INTRODUCTION Rock failure during bit-tooth impact and scouring action constitutes a vital part of the drilling process and a difficult problem for researchers. Much study has been devoted to various aspects of the problem, and much has been learned about mechanics of rock failure. However, analytical treatment of drilling at depth remains difficult, partly because there are so many factors involved and because valid simulation of downhole conditions is extremely difficult. Forming individual craters by a bit tooth or chisel impacting, or indenting, a rock mass has been studied by many investigators.1-18 Similarity between single-tooth chisel impact and the corresponding action of a rotary bit has been discussed by Appl and Gatley, Garner, Podio, and Gatlin l8 compared the similarity in single-blow impact tests with microbit drilling data reported by Cunningham and Eenink.l9 Maurerll has used single-tooth impact data to develop a "perfect cleaning" theory of rotary drilling. Individual roller cutter-tooth impact data have been reported by Young. 20 Single-tooth tests in all of the cited literature were carried out on dry rocks. Inasmuch as any subsurface rock of oilfield interest is saturated with some fluid, it seemed desirable to study crater formation in permeable rocks saturated with a viscous pore fluid as a step, however short, toward more realistic simulation of subsurface conditions. This paper presents results of single-blow chisel impact studies on Berea and Bandera sandstones, both dry and saturated with pore fluids of various viscosities at confining pressures to 10,000 psi. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The same basic apparatus for single-blow chisel impact at elevated stress states, described in earlier papers was used in this study. l6. l8 Fig. 1 shows the complete experimental system; Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the pressure cell, with a sample ready to be impacted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two different rocks, Berea and Bandera sandstones, were used in this study. Both rocks have been used extensively in research, and rock descriptions can be found in a paper by Gnirk and Cheatham.15 Permeability to air of Berea is about 300 md normal to bedding and 540 md parallel to bedding. Bandera had vertical and horizontal air permeabilities of 18 and 57 md, respectively.

The limitations on the problem size to be solved by the program (Appendix II) has been outlined in the paper. I would like to add the following additional limitations of this computer program: The dimensions of the variable J1and J2 should be changed to J, (550) and J2 (550) to handle problems containing more than 400 branches, and up to 550 branches. If there are a large number of branches common to the various meshes, another limitation on the problem size will be the dimension of the variable NA. While a higher-order polynomial fitting for the fan characteristic data points is more rigorous, a quadratic relation, if linear interpolation between the points is inadequate, will result in saving computing time without much loss of accuracy. Of course, this can be handled by minor modifications to the existing polynomial fitting routine in the program. M. J. This paper describes experimental investigations conducted at the California Research Corporation's model oil well. The first part describes filter loss from several drilling muds through bore hole walls during mud circulation and drill string rotation. The effect of mud properties and drill string rotation with mud circulation is described. Filtration from a bore hole full of drilling mud, not circulating, but under pressure for extended time periods, is also discussed. The second part describes filter loss to permeable formations from beneath a drilling bit where filter cuke has no opportunity to develop appreciable thickness. If potential flow theory is applied to predict filtrate invasion from this hole bottom, targe invasions arc calculated. But model well experimentation shows that filtrate invasion from the hole bottom is controlled by mud particles that penetrate the formation ahead of the bit. This experimentation provides data to estimate the effect of mud particle penetration on fluid loss to formation. The third part presents an estimate of mud filtration during drilling of a well. INTRODUCTION As oil wells are drilled by the rotary method, drilling mud circulates up the annulus between drill pine and well wall. Drillers adjust mud density so that the pressure at the bottom of the mud column is several hundred psi greater than the pressure of reservoir fluid. As a result of this pressure difference, the liquid part of the mud filters into the rock around the bore and mud solids deposit as a filter cake on the well wall. For many reasons the petrogleum industry, within the past 20 years, has spent much money and energy to determine the volume of mud filtrate that enters rock around the well bore and dedicated much research effort to reduce this volume. Among the reasons for attempts to determine the volume of mud filtrate and to reduce this volume are the following: 1. If filtrate damages the permeability of oil sand, the resultant damage to oil well productivity will depend on the distance that the filtrate invades the oil sand; reduction of filtrate volume may, therefore, increase well productivity. 2. Filtrate that penetrates shale sections may cause the shale to swell and to slough into the well bore. Uncontrolled sloughing may stick drill pipe. Reduction in filtrate volume may reduce drilling trouble. 3. Electric log resistivity curves are changed by invasion of a mud filtrate; the change depends on the depth to which filtrate invades. Knowledge of this depth is necessary before resistivity logs can be interpreted accurately. For these reasons, specifications the place an upper limit to drilling mud filter loss are now written into almost all drilling programs. These specifications are based on APT Recommended practice 29, Standard Field Procedure for Testing Drilling Fluids,' which describes a static filtration test operated at 100 psi filtration pressure and at ambient temperature. Although this test is adequate for mud control, it cannot be used to compare filtration properties of different muds. Schremp and Johnson' showed, for example, that mud with a low API filter loss does not necessarily have low filter loss at bottom hole temperature and pressure. Also, no information has been available about the effect of bottom hole mechanics (mild circulation, drill string rotation, and bit action) on mud filtration. The self-diffusion coefficient of oxygen in a liquid silicate slag containing 40 pct SiO2, 40 pct CaO, and 20 pct Al2O3, was determined using the capillary eff;usion technique. Two stable isotopes of oxygen (O17 and O18) were used as tracers. After each diffision run, the slags were reduced with graphite, the evolved carbon monoxide collected and converted into CO,. The oxygen isotope concentrations were obtazned by measuring the (CO2)45/(CO2)44 and the (CO2)46/(CO2) ratios of the gas. It was found that for O17 Exchange of oxygen between neighboring silicate anions, possibly accompanied by the rotation of these complexes, is a probable diffusion mechanism. The exchange of oxygen atoms between holes in the silicate "lattice" may also be postulated. A full understanding of the properties of slags is unlikely unless the structural details are clearly established. Thus properties such as surface tension, viscosity, expansivity, electrical conductivity, ionic mobility, density, compressibility, and so forth, have been studied. Of importance also are the self-diffusion coefficients and the energies of activation for diffusion of the component ions. The self-diffusion coefficients of calcium, 1-3silicon,, sulfur,4 and aluminumS in a ternary silicate slag have been determined with the aid of radio-isotopes. The self-diffusion coefficient of oxygen in such a slag was investigated in the course of the work reported here.

THE structure of anodic films formed on aluminum and other metals under varied conditions is not well known despite the wide use of such films both as protective coatings and as the dielectric medium in elec-trolytic condensers. The present work was undertaken as a survey of the possibilities of electron diffraction in the investigation of anodic films, especially in comparing the properties of anodic films formed under dif-ferent sets of conditions and subjected to various subsequent treatments. In addition, an effort has been made to compare surface films formed on aluminum by anodic treatment with surface films formed by heating, immersion in chemicals, etc, The electron diffraction method in many cases has been successfully applied to the study of thin surface films. Its principal advantage is that it can be used without removing the films from the base material upon which they have been formed. The low penetrating power of electrons, in the "reflection" diffraction method which has been used in this work, prevents the appearance of diffraction patterns from substances at depths greater than about 100 Angstrom units (10-6 cm.). Different investigations of the structure of anodic films have shown widely varying results, depending on the methods used in preparing the films. Apparently under some conditions these films are crystalline and under other conditions they are amorphous, and it has been difficult to say which type of structure will be found in any particular case. Schmid and Wassermann's' X-ray diffraction patterns of eloxal? films show two broad, diffuse bands, which these investigators attribute to finely divided cubic y-Al2O3-§ Burgers, Claassen, and Zernicke3 obtained sharp X-ray

The present work was undertaken as a survey of the possibilities of electron diffraction in the investigation of anodic films, especially in comparing the properties of anodic films formed under different sets of conditions and subjected to various subsequent treatments. In addition, an effort has been made to compare surface films formed on aluminum by anodic treatment with surface films formed by heating, immersion in chemicals, etc. The elcctron diffraction method in many cases has been successfully applied to the study of thin surface films. Its principal advantage is that it can be used without removing the films from the base material upon which they have been formed. The low penetrating power of electrons, in the "reflection" diffraction method which has been used in this work, prevents the appearance of diffraction patterns from substances at depths greater than about 100 Angstrom units (lop6 cm.). Different investigations of the structure of anodic films have showll widely varying results, depending on the methods used in preparing the films. Apparently under some conditions these films are crystalline and under other conditions they are amorphous, and it has been difficult to say which type of structure will be found in any particular case. Schmid and Wassermann's1 X-ray diffraction patterns of eloxal‡ films show two broad, diffuse bands, which these investigators attribute to finely divided cubic y-Al2O3.§ Burgers, Claassen, and Zernicke³ obtained sharp X-ray

BERYLLIUM, obtained mainly from the beryllium-aluminum silicate, beryl, is one of our most strategic and critical metals. Strategic because suitable substitutes for many of its alloys have never been developed. Strategic because of certain uses and potential uses of a classified nature in our nuclear energy program. In this field, substitutes have been developed, but only at the expense of a reduction in efficiency.
