(New York Meeting, February, 1916) DURING the past year considerable work dealing with the mechanical properties and microstructure following the anneal under uniform conditions of certain types of commercial rolled brass has been done in this laboratory. Since these experiments were conducted with the active cooperation of the Bridgeport Brass Co., involving free use of its product, and have thus furnished information which is characteristic of some of its special mixtures, full publication of the numerical relationships and comparative results encountered does not seem justifiable. Some of the more general features of this work are, however, available and it is our present purpose to use the material in question, along with some results of special tests, in discussing the characteristics of recrystallization as related to the degree of hardening by strain and the ordinary annealing variables. We desire to make acknowledgment of the many courtesies extended by Mr. Charles Ferry, Metallurgist of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and the value of his cooperation, which has greatly stimulated the study of brass in this laboratory. A clear and systematic presentation of the principal relations between temperature and time of anneal, the changing physical properties and microstructure and the degree of previous reduction by cold-rolling, was first made, in the case of rolled brass and copper, by the French engineer, C. Grard,1 in 1909, although much fragmentary information of this general character had appeared earlier and the main facts involved were undoubtedly known to many brass specialists through their own private research. The use of portable radon detectors has become routine in reconnaissance uranium surveys where water and sediment samples are analyzed in field labs for radon and radium, and in detailed work where drill hole locations are pinpointed by field determinations of radon in soil gas from shallow holes. During the drilling program itself, however, very few operators are taking advantage of radon and radium analyses to decide whether a barren drill hole was a near miss or whether the immediate area can be written off. The technique is effective both above and below the water table.

The critical resolved shear stress and the strain rate dependence of the .flow stress are reported for Ag base A1 single crystals up to 6 at. pct A1 over a temperature ralzge of 4.1° to 470°K. At room temperature the solid solution strengthening is attributed brinciballv to an increase in the dislocation density on alloying. At 42°K the alloys are relatively stronger because the dislocations widen on alloying and are more difficult to cut. In a previous paper, the authors reported the characteristics of strain aging in Ag base A1 alloys.' The variation of the magnitude of the strain-aging yield drops on aging time, aluminum content, and testing temperature strongly indicated that the phenomenon is due to the Suzuki mechanism. In the present paper, the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) and the strain rate dependence of the flow stress are reported for Ag base A1 single crystals as functions of testing temperature (4.2" to 470") and A1 content (0 to 6 at. pct). Observations on the substructure and measurements of the effect of crystal growth rate are also given. The experimental re- sults appear explainable considering that aluminum additions increase the dislocation density and dislocation width. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods of specimen preparation and tensile testing were described previously.' Briefly, single crystals were grown from the melt in a vacuum (1 x lom5 mm Hg), shaped into tensile samples by a combination of abrading and acid etching, annealed at 850°C in a vacuum (1 x 10" mm &Z) for several days, and furnace cooled to 200'. The testing was done on a model TM Instron using friction grips and a strain rate of about 5 x 106 per sec unless otherwise noted. The various testing temperatures were obtained by immersing the specimens in the following media: 1) 4.2': liquid helium using the apparatus of G. Byrne;' 2) 77°K: liquid nitrogen; 3) 200"K: dry ice and acetone; 4) 415' K: ethylene glycol; 5) 460' \ to 480' : molten Stanalax. In the determination of the CRSS above 296' K, a ratio method was used; the crystals were strained initially at the higher temperature, 0.1 pct shear strain, and then tested at 296' . The ratio of the flow stress between the two temperatures was then multiplied by the average CRSS at 296' K to obtain the value of the CRSS at the high temperature. (The test at 296' showed a yield point resulting from strain aging; the flow stress at 296' K was taken as the lower yield stress.) The object of the present investigation was to discover a physical basis for rank differentiation of coals, particularly the coals of the Illinois basin. Vitrainl was selected as the most appropriate coal material to use in the investigation, because of its homogeneity and ease of acquisition and handling. Previous Investigations.—Hoffman and Jenker2 have shown that their index of reflection is a characteristic of coal rank and that the Leitz slit microphotometer may be used in determining the different intensities of reflection. Zhemchuzhnikov3 measured the luster of several Russian coals with a color analyzer and found that the degree of luster was indicative of rank. Luster-volatile matter curves based on data from Sucan and Donetz coals were satisfactorily used for determining the rank or volatile content of other coals after the luster strength was determined. In 1934 Fisher4 reported refractive indices of 1.76 for bituminous vitrain and 1.87 for semibituminous vitrain. Investigation of Angle of Polarization.—Early in the present investigation several determinations of the refractive indices of the vitrains were made by immersing the minus 150 plus 200-mesh powder in oils. It was found that all the samples fell within the range 1.6 to 1.8. However, difficulty was encountered in securing oils in this high index range that were closely enough spaced to separate some of the coals. The writers made a number of determinations of the angle of maximum polarization from the polished surfaces of the vitrains and derived their refractive indices by the procedure described in the following paragraphs. Johannsen5 states the fundamental concepts underlying this procedure as follows: In general, in an isotropic medium light vibrates in all directions at right angles to the direction of propagation, and when it meets with another isotropic medium at an angle, part of the light is reflected and part refracted. During the past year there have been a number of significant investigations that have furnished evidence on the driving forces governing grain growth and on the role played by boundary impurities. Thus Burke has shown that in high purity alpha brass the rate of grain growth in the earliest stages is approximately inversely proportional to the existing grain size. This relation agrees with one derived by Zener assuming that surface energy was the driving force in grain growth. Also in confirmation of the surface energy hypothesis, Burke found that growth virtually stopped when the grain boundaries or even only the grain corners were melted.

Polychlorinated biphenyls were the basis of non-flammable askarel dielectric liquids wed in electrical equipment made between 1929 and 1978. Although PCBs were widely used in mine electrical equipment, the toxicity and environmental persistence of this chemical led Congress to ban its manufacture and use. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8838 summarizes the regulations imposed by the EPA on the use and disposal of PCBs, and describes the limitations of available substitutes. Recent changes in the regulations will impose additional requirements on the use of PCBs by the mining industry. This paper is an update of the material presented in the Bureau of Mines information circular.

Brass mills are familiar with a recurring problem which reveals itself during deformation of annealed metal as an opening up of cracks which are suggestive of a grain boundary pattern. A typical example is seen in Fig 1, which shows part of the convex surface of a cartridge brass disc which was slightly dished by the punching operation. Another illustration of the same type of defect was found in the surface of a finished cartridge case which split open on firing. These cracks, shown in Fig 2, were away from the split but indicate the presence of the type of weakness which permitted the splitting. Usually the weakness consists of separate cracks, the lengths of which are of the same order of magnitude as the grain size prior to the final anneal. Their typical appearance in a polished section is shown in Fig 3. This structure was found below the surface of a fractured tensile-specimen that had been cut from a large cartridge blank showing the defects on its convex surface. While the pattern formed by these cracks suggests a grain boundary origin, the cracks bear no relation to the currently existing grain structure. Thus Fig 3 shows that the grains have grown up to cracks already present. Since it is doubtful that the cracks were present in the metal before the anneal, they must have formed during the anneal but prior to recrystallization. The term "fire-cracking" has been generally applied to cracking that occurs during an anneal under the influence of internal stress, but refers more specifically to obvious macroscopic cracking attributable to the presence of a low melting phase, usually lead. Since the type of cracking described above may occur when the lead content is very low, we have considered it a somewhat different phenomenon, and have called it "inter-granular parting." While most examples involve cartridge brass, intergranular parting has also been observed in the fabrication of large seamless tubes from discs of both 85/15 red brass and 70/30 cupro-nickel. Similar cracking in nickel silver was investigated by Jones and Whitehead,1 who showed that it could occur during healing or cooling. That which occurred on heating they called "fire cracking," and they suggested that, a transformation at about 320°C might account for its occurrence. It was felt in this laboratory that the observed parting was probably one aspect of the general observation, first made by Rosenhain and Archbutt,2 that a tendency toward intergranular fracture under tensile stress increases with increasing temperature and decreasing rate of strain. In this case the stress involved would be internal. The rate of strain would be exceedingly slow, a localized internal creep. Reference to the literature uncovered no efforts to extend the observations of Rosenhain to conditions involving only internal stress. Accordingly, an exploratory research, sufficient in detail to satisfy us as to the probable truth of this explanation of the observed intergranular parting, was undertaken. The internal stresses present during the early stages of an anneal (prior to recrystallization) would be from two sources: residual stresses developed during deformation, and thermal stresses caused by uneven heating and expansion. Thermal stresses would vary widely according to shape, size and manner of heating, and can be considered as supplementary to residual stresses. It seemed necessary to determine the stress and temperature conditions under which parting would occur in a relatively short time, and then to establish whether or not in- ternal stresses may persist to an extent adequate to cause parting at such temperatures. (Jones and Whitehead1 and Moore and Beckinsale3 made tests which indicated that stress relief required an appreciable time.) During the course of the research the desirability of studying the effect of grain size became apparent, and this factor is one of the major variables of our investigation. Intergranular Parting under Tension at Elevated Temperatures In early experiments, hard 70/30 brass tensile specimens, with unknown residual stresses, held for 10 min. at applied stresses from 30,000 to 40,000 psi at temperatures from 300 to 350°C, showed no macroscopically visible cracks when unloaded and cooled, but cracks very similar in appearance to those observed in commercial practice were revealed in these specimens by pulling them to fracture. Annealed specimens, on the other hand, showed no cracks in such experiments, apparently because they deformed plastically at stresses below those necessary to cause parting in a reasonable time. Hence, the specimens used for this study were first strengthened by cold tensile elongation, giving them an unavoidable residual stress pattern (determined largely by grain size and orientation) which would, however, correspond in direction, at least, to the stress pattern obtained under stress at temperature. A variation in these residual stresses might be expected with variations in grain size, but following any given anneal the reproducibility of stress pattern should be as good as that of the grain size measurement. With no information as to the effect of the amount of prior deformation, tests were conducted on specimens given the same cold elongation, using a stress applied at temperature which was a constant proportion of the stress required to produce this elongation. In the course of studies made on the Ti-Cu alloy system,' particles identified visually as TiH were encountered unexpectedly in a specimen of high-purity Ti-0.8Cu alloy. The particles did not appear immediately after preparation, but following-storage in a dessicator for several days. Since the alloy had been vacuum annealed to a low hydrogen concentration (19 ppm by vacuum-fusion analysis), the appearance of the TiH particles was suspected as a surface contamination effect. A specimen of a Ti-0.8Cu alloy had been annealed 2 hr at 790°C and water quenched, to produce the single-phase equiaxed a structure. The metallo-graphic sample was ground through 600X paper, rough-polished on a high-speed wheel with a mixture of alumina and chromic acid, awLhish-polished on a slow-speed wheel. Disturbed metal layers were removed from the final surface by alternately etching with a 1 1/2 HF-3 1/2 HNO3-95 H2O solution and polishing on the slow-speed wheel with fine alumina. The final surface was swab-etched with a 1 1/2 HF-3 1/2 HNO3-95 H2O solution, rinsed in tap water, and dried in a stream of filtered air. The micro-structure, shown in Fig. 1, was composed of equiaxed a grains without any trace of second phase. After storage in a dessicator for 3 days, the appearance of small particles in the structure became evident (see Fig. 2). After 7 days of storage, the particles were more distinct, and in some grains, began to appear as elongated particles. The specimen then was etched a second time (without repolishing) to produce the structure shown in Fig. 4. On the basis of micro- structural observation, the line markings were identified as TiH; attempts to obtain diffraction patterns from the surface for positive identification were not successful. That the structure is a surface effect was demonstrated by grinding with 240X paper to remove the surface layer. The surface then was ground, polished, and etched using the procedures described previously. The same observations were made: the freshly prepared surface was devoid of any second phase, whereas the particles again appeared after several days storage. The same effect has been observed in other a-stabilized titanium alloys, including a high-purity Ti-0.20 alloy containing only 16 ppm H by analysis. The effect has not yet been observed in unalloyed titanium, nor does its appearance appear to be consistent with any particular alloy system. From these observations, it is concluded that certain a-titanium alloys are susceptible to the formation of titanium hydride at the surface of metallo-graphic specimens. In the Philippines, where distances are spoken of in terms off fight time, the Sipalay copper mines are two flight hours southeast of Manila on the island of Negros. After landing at the airport in Bacolod, it is then 170 km (106 milers) by surface transportation to Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corp.'s expanding copper operation. While copper deposits were discovered in the area in 1936-and one mine, the Binulig, began operations soon after-it wasn't until 1956 that stripping at Sipalay and construction of a 4000-t/d (4400-stpd) mill began. The mill went into operation in May 1957, and the first shipment of copper concentrate was made three months later.

The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of several commercial flocculants were investigated using a rotating coaxial cylinder viscometer. Similarities between the pH-apparent viscosity relationship and the flocculating properties of the reagents are discussed here. Synthetic neutral polymers and polyelectrolytes are used extensively as flocculants in mining and chemical engineering operations. The action of these reagents has been interpreted as adsorption of the polymer flocculant to the mineral surface, followed by the formation of physical polymer bridges between the particles.4,5 A consequence of the bridging model is that the efficiency of a polymer flocculant depends on the degree with which the polymer is adsorbed to the mineral surface, and the extent to which the polymer molecule forms a bridge between colliding particles. The length of the polymer molecule and its orientation at the mineral surface are important in the bridging mechanism since the further the polymer segments can protrude from the mineral surface the greater the probability may be of these segments contacting another mineral particle. Linke and Booth7 have shown that, for a silica suspension, both the settling rate at a given polymer addition and the maximum settling rate obtainable increase with increasing molecular weight. This paper describes laboratory techniques and subsequent results of US Bureau of Mines (USBM) research to produce chlorination-grade feed- stock from an abundant, low-grade, domestic, rock ilmenite ore. The research is part of the Bureau effort to devise technology that may help decrease US dependence on imported raw materials. A rock ilmenite containing about 46 wt % TiO2 was smelted in an electric arc furnace with coke, wood-chips, and Na2CO3 to separate most of the iron as pig iron and to form a low-iron, titanium-enriched slug. The slug was ground, pelletized, oxidized, and then sulfated with mixtures of SO2 and air in a continuous 4.5- to 9.1-kg/h (10- to 20-lb per hour) apparatus at 1023° to 122J0 K (1380° to 1740° F). The sulfated slug, containing 60% to 65% TiOb, was reground and leached in water at ambient temperature to decrease the combined levels of the troublesome calcium, magnesium, and manganese impurities from 7.0 to 1.7 wt 70. The final product was upgraded to about 8.4 wt % TiO2. This material is potentially suitable for chlorination in a fluidized bed reactor. The most favorable results were achieved with leached slug sulfated at a feed rate of 4.5 kg/h (10 lb per hour) and at temperatures of 1073° to 1123° K (1470° to 1560' F).

Each of the three refining furnaces in use at Great Falls is provided with a waste-heat boiler. The general arrangement of furnace and boiler is as shown in Fig. 1. Two of the furnaces have hearths 45 ft. 7 in. by 14 ft. 6 in.; the third has a hearth 46 ft. 101/2 in. long and of the same width as the other two. The furnaces at present are equipped for firing with natural gas. As originally constructed two of the furnaces had hearths 36 by 14 ft., and were designed to use coal on grates, but these furnaces were lengthened and fired successively with pulverized coal and oil. The third furnace was added in 1926 and was oil-fired until 1928. Since that year natural gas has been in use on all of the furnaces. The changes that have occurred in connection with furnace design and the comparative performance of the furnaces with various fuels were described1 by the author in 1932. Two of the furnaces are provided with Stirling class A-30 boiler. rated at 400 hp. and having 4008 sq. ft. of heating surface. The thir furnace has a class A-21 Stirling waste-heat boiler rated at 300 hp. with 2805 sq. ft. of heating surface. The boilers are not baffled. The waste-heat boilers are placed on a platform 17 ft. 3 in. above the level of the furnace charge floor. The waste gases from the furnace pass by a vertical uptake flue, 4 by 3 ft. inside at the point where it enters the chamber, to a brick chamber from which the gases pass over a bridge wall and into the boiler setting. The uptake flue and chamber are constructed of silica brick. Each furnace has a steel stack 125 ft. high, measured from the boiler floor. The stacks have a 41/2-in. firebrick lining and are 5 ft. in diameter

The introduction of the scintillation counter into field use for gamma-ray well logging has provided a new tool with special utility for the deternzination of natural radioactivity of sediments. Previous subsurface gamma-ray measurements have indicated only the total amount of radioactivity of the sediments. With the scintillation counter, the relative amounts of the elements which emit gamma radiation can be determined. Sediments logged included 35 zones in wells located in the Teras Gulf Coast, East Texas, and West Teras. Although the data obtained from measurements made to date are not sufficient to evaluate the possibilities of spectral logging, it appears likely that spectral measurements will yield information of geologic value. INTRODUCTION Although variations in the natural radioactivity of sediments were recognized as early as 1909,1 the appli- cation of such variations to borehole logging was not made until almost 30 years later. A group of Russian workers in the early 1930's were successful in making crude measurements of natural gamma activity in an oil well borehole. The first practical gamma-ray logging system was developed by Howell and Frosch2 in 1939. Induced radioactivity, or neutron, logging appeared soon after the introduction of gamma-ray logging. After early work had demonstrated the potentialities of radioactivity logging, development of sensitive and stable logging equipment for field use followed, so that neutron and natural gamma logs are now run routinely and have proved to be extremely valuable in characterizing subsurface formations. Even though tremendous strides have been made in developing radioactivity logging, it is apparent that the ultimate in the method of logging has not been reached, for, until very recently1 in none of the commercially available logging systems has advantage been taken of the fact that gamma radiation is composed of a spectrum of rays, each ray having a distinct and characteristic energy. An individual gamma ray originates in a single element and has energy determined by the element. The inten- sity of radiation, or number of rays emitted from unit volume in unit time, is determined by the concentration of the element. If it were possible to sort out these gamma rays and assign them to their parent elements, thereby essentially analyzing for the elements, a wealth of new information descriptive of formation material and fluid content would be at hand. For example, if in natural gamma logging, the gammas due to potassium and to the thorium and uranium series were measured individually, data would thus be available on the concentrations of each of the three elements, adding materially to the information content of the log. In contrast, conventional gamma logs measure only a quantity proportional to the combined concentrations of uranium, thorium, and potassium. The naturally radioactive elements occur in sediments in concentrations dependent on source material of the sediment, and through their chemical characteristics, on conditions of deposition,' so that the individual concentrations may be diagnostic for particular formations. These concentrations, particularly if measured in situ, could lead to a powerful tool for correlation and for reflecting environmental conditions under which sedimentation took place. MISSOURI SCHOOL OF MINES On the tenth of January, 1919, a meeting was held by the juniors and seniors for the purpose of reorganizing the Missouri Mining Association. The reorganization was brought about in this manner because at that time there were no old members left in school. At that meeting, the following officers were elected for the remainder of the year: Gerald F. Rackett, president, Harland H. Hoppock, Secretary. The Association has held several interesting meetings and is arranging interesting programs for some to be held in the future. At present the Association has thirty-four members. H. H. The Army Reorganization Act, which became effective July 1, 1916, contains a provision authorizing the organization of an Officers' Reserve, in which will be included a Corps of Reserve Engineers. There will also be an Enlisted Reserve of skilled workmen in technical lines. The special provisions of the bill relating to the Engineer Officers' Reserve were formulated with the help of the Joint Committee of the several national engineering societies, which has been at work on the matter for over a year with the War Department and Committees of Congress.
