THE Balatoc mine, one of the Haussermann group,[t] is on the Island of Luzon, the largest of the Philippine group, about 260 km. north of Manila, and 12 km. from the city of Baguio. The Baguio district is the most important gold-mining area of the Philippines, with 14 producing mines in 1939, milling 2,3;8,894 tons of ore, yielding [P]40,881,048, approximately 55 per cent of the total Philippine production of [P]74,131,216. PRODUCTION HISTORY The Balatoc mine began production in January 1929 with a 150-ton cyanide mill. Increases in mill capacity have taken place as follows: March, 1932, to 350 tons June, 1933, to 470 tons December, 1933, to 515 tons July, 1934, to 700 tons December, 1934, to 1000 tons May, 1935, to 1200 tons October, 1938, to 1300 tons April, 1939, to 2000 tons January, 1941, to 2150 tons Production during the period of expansion has steadily increased in total value in spite of the fact that grade of ore milled has dropped-from $31.06 in 1929 to $5.78 in 1940. Annual reports give production as shown in Table 1, the average values being based on gold at the old price of $20.67 per ounce. [ ] GEOLOGY The ore occurs in quartz-calcite veins that vary in width from narrow stringers to mineralized zones 40 to 50 ft. wide. Wall rocks consist largely of diorites, with some andesite, and a fragmental breccia called locally the "Balatoc plug." Texture of the ore varies widely in the different veins-from a soft, highly altered, gouge material filled with quartz fragments through a soft, unaltered quartz-calcite to a hard, massive quartz ore. Three major vein systems have been extensively developed, and smaller amounts of work have been done on several others. These veins strike east-west to N. 60°, dipping south from 50° to 90°, and are essentially tension breaks between a series of faults or shears striking N. 30°E. to N. 50°E. and dipping southeast from 50°to 90°. IT is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice: Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.1 This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the "planes of weakness" resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine .the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 used stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot. This paper presents stress-cycle graphs for five samples of monel metal and three high-strength aluminum alloys. These graphs are evidently curves with horizontal asymptote. The position of the horizontal asymptote can be determined with sufficient accuracy by extending the experiments to not more than 50,000,000 cycles. For some of the graphs, there is a slight downward slope between 50,000,000 and 100,000,000 cycles. The slope is so slight, however, that, extrapolation from 50,000,000 to 100,000,000 cycles gives the endurance limit with sufficient accuracy. Monel metal and duralumin are not exceptional among non-ferrous metals in endurance properties. IN Part I of this paper' a comparison was given of the results obtained in investigation of the endurance properties of non-ferrous metals in .three laboratories: the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, the U. S. Air Service at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, and the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md. Part I was devoted to a discussion of the forms of the stress-cycle graphs obtained at the three laboratories. For comparison, typical graphs obtained at the three laboratories were plotted on the same semi-logarithmic scale. The typical rotating-cantilever graph for ferrous and non-ferrous metals obtained at the Naval Experiment Station was described as a curve descending with gradually decreasing slope to a horizontal line. In the reply to the discussion of Part I, however, this graph was described as a curve with horizontal asymptote. It. was also said that the ordinate of the asymptote (the endurance limit) could be determined by endurance tests of not more than 50,000,000 cycles. This description was intended to apply only within the range of ordinates used in plotting an ordinary endurance graph. It was recognized that if .extended upward beyond the usual field, the curvature of the graph would decrease until -the graph would either approach a straight a line or possibly reverse its curvature.

The year 1938, with a production of 58,784,250 bbl. from 18,790 wells shows a slight recession from the high peak of oil production reached the previous year, when slightly over 68 million barrels of oil was marketed. The previous high peak had been reached in 1917 with a total of 45,451,000 bbl. Another still earlier peak was reached in 1904, during which year slightly less than 5 million barrels was produced and sold. The production of gas, on the other hand, probably reached a new peak during 1938 with a total of over 60 billion cubic feet. This peak, however, was not the highest peak, for during the year 1908 over 80 billion cubic feet was produced. Between these two high peaks the production dropped down to 16 billion cubic feet in the year 1921. The number of wells drilled during the year totals 1569. This figure is somewhat lower than the figure given in several trade journals because it does not include wells that were deepened or recompleted in a different geological horizon. Nearly three-fourths (or 1107) of the total number of wells were completed as commercial oil wells (915 in western and 192 wells in eastern Kansas). The commercial gas wells completed number 50, of which 4 are in eastern Kansas and 46 in western Kansas. The remaining 412 completions include 130 dry holes in eastern and 282 dry holes in western Kansas. Based on daily potential capacity, the new discoveries of the year accounted for 70,000 bbl. of new oil for eastern and 1,220,000 bbl. of new oil for western Kansas. It is interesting to note in this connection that the number of wells completed in the state rose gradualIy to a first peak in 1904, when 2782 were drilled. The number dropped off rapidly to 368 three years later, but rose to the second and highest peak in 1918 when 4671 wells were completed. In the period between 1904 and 1912 more gas wells than oil wells were completed. Between the high peak of 1918 and the somewhat lower peak in 1937, the low point was reached during 1931, with the completion of only 470 wells. In the matter of new pools discovered, Kansas again ranks high. A rapid and seniquantitative method of determining prefered orientation on large numbers of. With use of an empirical relationslip between the single-crystal hardnesses and those of the polycrystalline material conentional pole figures could be constructed which compare favorably also obtained. To determine preferred oriention qualitatively from hardness data requires a minimum of twelve measurements per plane on three, preferattention to grain size, specimen prepartion, and in-rreinetzt, and analjlsis is of the order of- 45 to 60 rrin. THE design of structures from Zr alloys requires consideration of preferred orientation and the resulting anisotropy of mechanical properties. Rapid and semi-quantitative methods of evaluating anisotropy and of determining preferred orientation are needed for quality control and for examining the large number of test specimens required in development programs. The variation of Knoop microhardness with indenter orientation has been studied in single crystals of several hcp metals including titanium.' beryllium,' magneium, and zinc.4 The maximum hardness observed on any crystallographic plane other than the basal plane invariably occurred when the long axis of the Knoop indenter was either parallel or perpendicular to the projection of the [ OOOI.] direction on the plane of examination. When the major slip mode was (0001)(i2i0j the maximum hardness occurred at the parallel positio! but when the operating slip system was {10i0) (i210) the hardness was a maximum perpendicular to the [0001] projection. A minimum hardness was always observed at a rotation of 90 deg from the maximum. It follows that the orientation of the projection of the [0001] can be determined on any non-basal plane by making hardness measurements at a number of indenter orientations. The determination of the orientation of the [0001] projection on two non-parallel, preferably orthogonal, surfaces of the specimen will allow location of the [0001] direction in the specimen. It seems possible that such measurements could be used to examine, at least qualitatively, the preferred orientation existing in polycrystalline hcp materials. An investigation of the microhardness anisotropy in Zircaloy-2 was undertaken to ascertain whether these measurements could be used for this task. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of Zircaloy-2 were grown by an a-8-a annealing sequence using electron-beam heating.= The orientation of the crystals was determined by a conventional back-reflection Laue technique. The crystals were then mounted on a goniometer head and the desired crystallographic faces were milled and chemically polished. Polycrystalline Zircaloy-2 specimens were prepared from fabricated sheets or plates. Inverse pole figures for these materials were obtained using the X-ray diffraction techniaue described by Jetter, McHargue, and illiams.' A Wolpert-Greis Micro-Reflex hardness-testing machine was used to make the Knoop microhardness measurements. The single-crystal and polycrystalline specimens were loaded to 0.5 and 2.0 kg, respectively. Determination of the scatter of hardness numbers as a function of applied load for several indenter orientations on several specimen surfaces showed that the loads selected were the lightest consistent with minimum scatter. Heavier loads did not appreciably decrease the scatter and produced hardness impressions too large to be conveniently measured with the equipment used. Seven crystallographic planes of the single crystals were examined, while six planes of examination were used in studying Zircaloy-2 polycrystals. The specimens were rotated 10 to 15 deg after each measurement and from four to eight impressions were made at each angle of rotation. RESULTS The two angles which were used to relate crystallographic directions and planes in the hcp cell to the planes of examination of the single crystals are shown in Fig. 1. 8 is the angle between the c axis. The length of the collector is found to influence the flotation of the mineral even at incipient conditions, which are below the concentration at which interaction at the solid-liquid interface begins to take place to form hemi-micelles. To study this dependence, concentration for incipient flotation of quartz was determined as a function of pH with collectors of various chain lengths. The observed effect of chain length on flotation is ascribed to that of collector adsorbed on the bubble surface. In previous studies, it was shown that at low concentrations the alkyl collector ions adsorb at the solid-liquid interface as individuals.''2 At higher concentrations, the collector ions adsorbed at the solid-liquid interface associate with each other to form two-dimensional aggregates called hemi-micelles. Above the hemi-micelle concentration, the length of the hydrocarbon chain is extremely important since the hydrocarbons are in effect removed from water during the association, making the energetic conditions more favorable for adsorption at the interface. Because of this enhanced adsorption, one observes a very rapid increase in flotation associated with the hemi-micelle formation at the solid-liquid interface. However, a dependence of flotation on the chain length at concentrations below that required for hemi-micelle association was also observed,' and this cannot be explained by the above mechanism which postulated hydrocarbon chain interactions only at the solid-liquid interface. This prompted an investigation into other possible reactions of the hydrocarbon chains and an examination of the conditions at the bubble surface involved in the flotation system and how these observations might explain the reactions at the solid-gas interface which cause the particle-bubble attachment required for flotation. To obtain more information on chain length effects, flotation, under incipient conditions, was tested by vacuum flotation techniques. The collector-concen-tration-pH relationships for flotation of quartz with alkyl ammonium acetate collectors was delineated by observing the pH at which quartz particles begin to float to the liquid surface. By investigating flotation as a function of pH, it was also possible to study the effect of neutral molecules on incipient flotation conditions, since the aminium ions hydrolyze to amine molecules at higher pH values. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Brazilian quartz specimens were crushed and sized, and the 270 x 400 mesh fraction was used for flotation studies. The samples were leached with concentrated hydrochloric acid until no coloration of the acid occurred. The leached material was washed free of chloride ions and stored in distilled water. The vacuum flotation technique developed by Schuhmann and prakash3 was used to determine the critical pH-concentration curves. This method, which can be used to delineate conditions for incipient flotation, is fairly simple and rapid. About 0.5 gm of 270 x 400 mesh quartz was placed in a 100 ml graduated cylinder which was then filled to the 100 ml mark with the collector solution made from high-purity alkyl ammonium acetate salts. The water used for the test was conductivity water saturated with air that had been passed through a cleansing train consisting of Drierite, Ascarite, a water wash bottle, and a trap. After the pH was adjusted, the cylinder was then conditioned for thirty minutes. In the tests where an acid pH was desired, sufficient acid was added before the collector solution to avoid any effect due to slow desorption of collector from the quartz surface. After conditioning, vacuum was applied to the system and the flotation or nonflotation of the quartz was noted. The pH at which the quartz particles began to float to the liquid-gas interface was taken as the critical PH. Critical pH curves were thus determined for different concentrations of the various collectors. Hallimond tube flotation data were taken from the authors' previous publication1 for correlation with that from the vacuum flotation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results of vacuum flotation studies for determining critical pH-concentration curves, i.e., curves which delineate conditions for incipient flotation, are shown in Fig. I. In May 1960, six months after conversion of one- half of the Uranium Reduction Co. mill from acid to alkaline leach, severe corrosion was encountered in the 112 stainless steel wash baskets in the resin- in-pulp portion of the uranium circuit. Fortunately the corrosion was limited to the stainless steel screen cloth and bolts. The frames were not affected. Each resin-in-pulp wash basket serves as a container and a vehicle for approximately 40 cu ft of ion-exchange resin. Four baskets are installed in each tank through which uranium-rich solution flows as the baskets move up and down mechanically in the tank. The ion-exchange resin has an affinity for the uranium in the solution which causes it to be deposited on the resin in solid form. By reverse action with different chemical solutions, the uranium may be stripped from the resin for further processing and purifying. This section is the first step in the actual recovery of the uranium.

The depletion performance of gas wells has been investigated by mathematical simulation techniques. The gas well model which was studied consisted of a single well located in the center of a bounded, cylindrical, homogeneous reservoir. Dependency of gas compressibility and viscosity on pressure was considered in studies of well performance at both constant mass flow rate and constant flowing pressure conditions. To carry out the investigation, the nonlinear, second-order, partial differential equation which describes Darcy flow of a nonideal gas through porous media was solved numerically. Some of the previous investigations of gas well performance have been of limited general use, because assumptions were introduced to simplify either the gas properties or the basic differential equation. Other studies have been rigorous in these respects but have presented a very limited set of calculated results. The present study was attempted to present a rigorous theoretical model and sufficient numerical results to permit meaningful conclusions to be drawn. It was found that all terms must be retained in the partial differential equation to make accurate predictions. The neglect of higher-order terms, e.g., terms of the order of the "gradient squared", leads to serious material balance errors at large times and to conservative estimates of gas well performance. The higher the gas flow rate and/or the lower the permeability-thickness product of the formation, the more pronounced are these deviations. For example, in a well draining 640 acres in a 25-md-ft formation (8,120 MMcf gas in place) at a constant rate of 993 Mcf/D, the rigorous solution predicts a bottom-hole pressure decline from 4,000 to 1,000 psia in 8.7 years. If higher-order terms are neglected in the differential equation, this decline in pressure is predicted to occur in 5.3 years. With the results of the numerical solution of the differential equation as a basis, simple, easy-to-use approximations for predicting gas well performance for Darcy flow conditions have been developed. These simple approximations are based on the familiar equations for flow of a single, slightly compressible fluid. The approximate methods possess a high degree of accuracy and enable the prediction of long-term gas well performance to be made quickly and accurately without the use of a digital computer. Both transient and stable flow period approximations were developed. INTRODUCTION In recent years income from the sale of natural gas and associated products has represented an ever-incre as ing fraction of the industry's total revenue from operations. To meet the surge in demand for natural gas, the industry has depended heavily upon established reserves and has actively pursued development of new reserves. The search has progressively led to reservoirs which yesterday were too tight and/or deep to yield the desired return on invested capital. More than ever before, evaluation accuracy is now required to forecast the criteria upon which engineering recommendations and management decisions are based. Considerable effort has been expended by both research and operations personnel on the development and application of methods for analyzing and predicting the performance of gas wells. Fundamentally, the problem is the familiar one of extracting data during the drilling, testing and early production life of a well and applying these data within an accurate simulation model to predict long-term behavior. During the past 30 or more years a voluminous literature dealing specifically with gas field problems has been generated. A recent book' lists a comprehensive bibliography of published material through 1959. Over 1,200 references are cited. Since then 39 additional articles on natural gas technology have been published in Transactions volumes of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME. Most existing theory for predicting gas well performance requires that one or more idealizations (e.g., steady-state flow, ideal gas of constant viscosity, small and constant compressibility and constant-viscosity fluid) be applied. Although existing theory may apply directly or be adapted by various artifices to describe specific gas well and reservoir behavior, no widely applicable method is available, and existing methods appear to be subject to appreciable error unless better limits of applicability are defined. The objectives of this paper are (1) to present numerical solutions to the partial differential equation describing gas flow under conditions of general interest in gas well performance prediction work, (2) to present solutions which possess a high order of accuracy for both transient and stabilized flow periods of a well producing at constant rate or constant pressure, and (3) to develop and present simplified relationships which can be used as high-order approximations to the exact numerical results for fast and accurate predictions of gas well performance at the operating level. All binary and a number of ternary u alloys formed by first long period transition elements were examined and found to be ferromagnetic at low temperatures. The Curie temperatures for these alloys were measured. It was found that the correlation of the Curie temperature with composition may be described qualitatively in terms of the contributions of the various component atomic moments to the saturation moment of the alloy. Ternary Fe-Cr-Mo u phase alloys were also found to be ferromagnetic, with a Curie temperature dependent on the iron content and largely independent of the unit cell dimensions. Similar relations were found for the Co-Fe-Cr and the Co-Cr-Mo a alloys, where the Co + Fe content appears to determine the Curie temperature. RECENTLY, it has become increasingly evident that the u phase is some kind of an "electron compound." Several papers1-' discussed the empirical correlation between the composition of the various u phases in alloys of the transition elements and the distribution of electrons in the partially filled d-levels of the component atoms. However, a picture of the latter can be formed only in a more or less intuitive manner, as in the Pauling theory," and the rigorous treatment of these problems is at present prevented by lack of adequate knowledge of the electronic structure of the transition elements in the metallic state. It appeared reasonable to expect that investigation of the magnetic properties, which are related to d-shell electrons, may help in clarifying the physical nature of the foregoing empirical correlation. Qualitative tests of samples of various compositions have shown that certain u alloys become ferromagnetic at liquid nitrogen temperature." The present investigation was undertaken to determine whether or not low temperature ferromagnetism is characteristic of a large variety of u alloys and to establish how the Curie temperatures of ferromagnetic u alloys are influenced by changes in composition and in lattice parameter. In the first portion of the in- vestigation, Curie temperatures were measured for a series of u alloys containing either vanadium or chromium with one or two of the elements manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel. In the second phase of the work, data were obtained on the Curie temperature of ternary (Fe, Co, Cr)a, (Fe, Cr, Mo)a, and (Co, Cr, MO)U alloys, as a function of composition and of interatomic spacing. Experimental Procedures High frequency vacuum melting in high purity re-crystallized alumina crucibles was employed in the preparation of the u alloys, using metals whose lot analyses are given in Table I. Approximately two-thirds of the alloys were analyzed chemically, the analytical results being in acceptable agreement with the intended compositions, as seen in Tables I1 and 111. The specimens were annealed for homogen-ization in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct He and 8 pct H, mixture or in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes at temperatures from 780" to 1300°C, depending on the temperature range of the u phase field for the particular composition. The annealing temwerature and time for kach alloy are given in Tables 11 and 111. Curie points were determined by an induction method; the change with temperature of mutual inductance between two coils was observed when the i-u specimen was inserted into the flux path between the coils. The transformer consisted of three coils each containing 1200 turns of 0.0050 in. diam enameled copper wire. The center coil, P in Fig. 1, served as the primary coil, and was linked magnetically with each of the two secondary coils, S, and S? which were connected in series opposition. Chemical vapor deposition of hafnium carbide yielded whiskers, needles, dendrites, faceted crystals, and adherent coatings. The gas stream compositiom and the mass transfer conditions determined the habit of the deposit. The deposits were obtained at temperatures ranging from 1100" to 1800°C. HAFNIUM carbide has the highest melting point of any binary compound; therefore, its various potential applications are a subject of vital interest to the aerospace industry. The experiments described herein were performed to investigate the chemical vapor deposition of hafnium carbide with particular interest being placed upon the possible production of high-strength single-crystal whiskers for composite materials. In 1931 Moers 1 used a gaseous mixture of HfC14, Hz, and toluene to vapor deposit crystalline hafnium carbide on a tungsten filament heated to 2400°to 2800°C. More recently Lepie 2 deposited hafnium carbide on graphite using HfC14 and methane in a helium gas carrier. The pyrolytic depositions described here were accomplished in graphite tubes by using various gas mixtures and dopants. The resulting crystal habits included whiskers, needles, needle dendrites, bulbous dendrites, faceted crystals, and smooth, adherent poly-crystalline layers. EXPERIMENTAL The depositions were carried out in an induction-heated graphite tube, 1.2 cm ID, which was contained in a vertical 9-cm-ID quartz tube. (A more detailed account of the experimental procedures and results is given in Ref. 3.) Refractory oxide fiber and tubes and graphite felt were utilized jointly and singly for therma1 insulation. A typical temperature distribution is shown in Fig. 1. The reactant gases were introduced at the top and removed at the bottom of the tube. Table I summarizes the experimental conditions and results. Many deposition habits were obtained. X-ray analyses showed that they possessed the hafnium carbide structure. Almost invariably these formed well above the point of maximum temperature in the graphite tube. The habit depended strongly on the gas composition. In a series of runs (e.g., run A) using HfC14 and toluene in H 2, hafnium carbide coatings, Fig. 2, were reproducibly obtained at the position where the tube wall was 1400°C, and bulbous dendrites, Fig. 3, were

At this time it is expected that lists of symbols in general use throughout the country will be presented and the symbols most generally used will be recommended for adoption.

This paper is abstracted from the report of the Appraisement Committee of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, of which the writer was Chairman. The other members of the committee were M. V. McQuigg and R. S. Haseltine. To Thomas Cox, engineer in charge of the investigation, and to his efficient staff of assistants, is due the credit for the detail work necessary in carrying out the plan of the Committee. It treats only of the valuation of the lands, wells, and piping, without going into details of equipment and other features. It was recognized, early in the operation, that the value of oil lands was the value of oil ,to be extracted and marketed, less the costs attendant thereon. Referring this back to the costs in cents per barrel, it became obvious that surface improvements, absolutely necessary in the production of oil, from wells then drilled, had no separate and independent value aside from the value of the land, but that any excess equipment, not necessary for the production of oil from present wells, such as drilling tools, well casing, etc., should be given a present condition value. In valuing the properties of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, the Committee has considered the following facts: 1. That from each property there will ultimately be produced a certain total quantity of oil. 2. That in the production of that oil a certain total quantity of money will be expended. 3. That a certain total amount of money will be received from the oil. 4. That the total net receipts will be the total gross receipts less the cost of development and production. 5. That the present value of the net receipts must be such an amount that when invested by a purchaser it will be returned with 8 per cent, interest additional during the life of the property. The initial procedure consisted in making a general reconnaissance of the entire district in which the property was located and determining the lithological and structural conditions underlying the area. STUDIES by many authorities have proved that nitrogen exerts an injurious influence upon iron and steel, but in the casehardening of steel by carbon, nitrogen has the advantage of accelerating the process of cementation. Its influence upon special steels is quite remarkable; it can produce the hardest layer ever known in metallurgical products-a fact hit upon by A. Fry and studied and ascertained by L. Guillet. As there have been very few investigations on the influence of nitrogen on special steels, the writer has listed important articles dealing with this problem and has conducted experiments on nitrification. He also has tested the influence of nickel upon the penetration of nitrogen in electric-arc welding.

The stabil ity of engineered embankments subjected to earthquakes has received considerable attention in the last 10 years, but most of the effort has been directed toward stability of earth dams. Based upon past performance, earthquake- induced failures on non-impounding mine waste structures will likely correspond to small, local slumps or debris slides, and their stability should be considered as an integral part of mine economic planning. As such, stability considerations should include earthquake hazard, characteristics of earthquake ground motion, dynamic slope stability, and the impact that waste-dump failures have on mine operations. Numerous techniques have been proposed for analyzing the stability of embankments subjected to earthquakes. Before choosing an analysis technique, it is worth noting two important differences between the dynamic response of waste embankments and natural slopes. First, waste embankments respond as structures having unique modes of vibration, which causes embankment motions to differ from nearby ground motion. Second, because of embankment response, accelerations can be different at embankment crests than elsewhere in the structure and occur at frequencies that do not correspond to input ground motion. Because of these factors, embankment response should be calculated prior to slope stability assessment. In this paper several analysis techniques designed to calculate slope stability are evaluated, and conventional pseudostatic techniques are shown to be inappropriate for dynamic considerations. Techniques to calculate dynamic stability should include embankment response, all characteristics of earthquake motion, and roughness along failure planes as input, and should provide a displacement time-history of the slide mass as output. Two techniques satisfy this criterion, and in this paper the LADRS technique is recommended for its versatility and simplicity.
