THE extent to which geological carbonization has taken place in the process of coal formation is a fundamental factor in all considerations relating to classification, oxidation, deterioration, spontaneous combustion, and especially in all considerations relating to destructive distillation having as an objective the production of marketable coke and by-products. Moreover, it may be readily shown that a. striking relationship exists between the geological decomposition or geological carbonization processes and those artificially produced by heat. NOT long ago an engineering study was made to determine if the time had arrived to lower the head of standing water in abandoned Rock Springs mines Nos. I and 3 of The Union Pacific Coal Co. so that this water would not become a menace to the future operations of adjacent mines or mines developed on seams lower in the coal measures. This survey resulted - in a decision to unwater the No. 1 mine workings and, incidentally, the old No. 3 mine workings by drilling a large-diameter hole from the surface to an opening in No. 1 mine at the sump below 21 entry, provided it was found practical to operate a large-capacity, vertical, deep-well pump under the existing conditions. The effect of a surfactant, designated Syntex, on the wetting and spreading of hydrocarbon oil on molybdenite surfaces (faces) has been investigated experimentally through measurements of zeta potentials and factorially designed flotation tests. These studies indicate that Syntex has a positive effect in increasing molybdenite recovery in the rougher flotation circuit at the Climax mill. The analysis of experimental data using DLVO theory shows that the controlling factor in determining the magnitude of the repulsive energy barrier preventing oil from wetting and spreading on the molybdenite faces is the MoS2 zeta potential and the vapor oil droplet size. The role of Syntex in this case seems to be related to the decrease and stabilization of MoS2 zeta potential by Syntex adsorption and also to the emulsifying action of Syntex on vapor oil to provide a more favorable oil particle size.

(written discussion?).-The author of the paper has given an excellent description of the appliances used to cool parts of an open-hearth furnace, and some of the reasons why the refractories fail in service. Personally, I favor water-cooling, but to a limited degree. At one time I advocated more universal cooling than is now practised, but believe I must change my mind. Water-cooled, thin-lined blast furnaces have not proved as satisfactory as anticipated. While this may retard the building of many such furnaces, it will not prevent the use of regular tuyere- and bosh-cooling appliances. Water-cooling any furnace may be easily carried to the extreme. In an open-hearth furnace, excessive port or roof cooling, or cooling the working floors may preserve the lines of the furnace, lower the cost of refractories, acid to the comfort of the workmen, and necessitate fewer shutdowns for repairs, but it may not be good economy on account of the high first cost, the cost of cooling water, maintenance of cooling appliances, and the immediate reflection in a higher fuel cost. The question becomes a financial one, and is answered by using water-cooling devices up to the point at which they cease to show true economies. Open-hearth furnace bulkheads, roofs, and ports fail rapidly in about the order named. If they could be made to last indefinitely by water-cooling, the furnace would still have to be shut clown periodically for cleaning the slag pockets, regenerator chambers, and flues. Extra, or spare, pockets and regenerator chambers have been advocated to permit of continuous operation, but the space required, the cost of installation, and the fuel required to initially heat such cold chambers will largely prevent their adoption. Some particular fuels, as high-ash powdered coal, require frequent stoppages for cleaning, but for this particular fuel a special provision can' be made.

During the last few years a type of coal called "splint coal" has been brought to the attention of the United States Bureau of Mines, through numerous inquiries concerning its nature. Until recent years it appears to have escaped general notice. The term "splint coal" is of long standing, but was thought to be merely another expression applied by the miner to coal having certain minor characteristics. When closely examined, however, these coals were found to form a marked and distinct type, with distinctive characteristics that cannot be mistaken. Because splint coals produce a hot cheerful flame, possess a clean blocklike nature, and have a high volatile content, they have lately become much valued for domestic, gas-producer and steaming purposes, and have attracted considerable attention. Mattkohle For many years we have heard from the Germans about Mattkohle and Streifenkohle, in contradistinction to Glanzkohle, but have not realized that they were of a different type from the coals with which we were most familiar. This type of coal was first brought to general notice by Muck, in 1881, who gave a good description of it.' Because this coal is often intercalated with thin sheets of brightly shining cod, Schondorff, who was more familiar with the Saar coals, called it Streifernkohle. This term was later used by Muck also. Still later Potoné² used this term exclusively for the whole group in contradistinction to a class called Glanzkohle, and considered these coals to be composed alternately of Humuskohle and Faulkohle or Mattkohle (Pig. 20). Not knowing the nature of the German coals and not realizing that the term Streifenkohle was applied to a distinct class of coal, the terms of its components as used by Potonié and others were translated to "bright Coal" and "dull coal" and applied to the components of our

They tnust thank him for the vast array of $acts he presents, and for having given them sixty-four analyses with which to combat his own conclusions and to establish their own, which are entirely opposite to his. In Dr. Duclley" discussion of his former investigation, at the Pittsburgh meeting, he said, "If you do not like my conclusions, draw your own conclusions." I have studied his last paper as thoroughly as the limited time since I received it would adruit, and have drawn some concluvions which I will first state, and then attempt to demonstrate. CARLTON mill in the Cripple Creek district, 45 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colo., has been in operation for approximately three years, treating the custom sulpho-telluride ores formerly handled by the Golden Cycle mill in Colorado Springs. At the new mill the pyrite-telluride flotation concentrates have been roasted, prior to cyanidation, in a Dorrco FluoSolids reactor, which has proved capable of yielding calcine readily amenable to cyanidation. Incoming ores are crushed at Carlton to 5/8 in. and sampled in 30 to 75-ton lots before the individual lots are mixed in the fine ore bin. The composite ore then goes to the grinding circuit. Classifier overflow from the grinding circuit is treated by flotation to produce a concentrate containing approximately 85 pct of the values in 5 pct of the weight. The flotation concentrate goes to the FluoSolids reactor prior to cyanidation. Cyanide solution values are recovered by zinc dust precipitation. Flotation tailings are thickened and cyanided, the values from this part of the circuit being recovered from solution by activated carbon.

A combination of industrial and laboratory data is used to explain the interrelationships between operating parameters and cementation plant performance as measured by copper recovery and iron consumption. The chemical factors considered are the relative concentrations of copper and ferric ions in solution, acid concentration, the possible buffering action of other dissolved salts and solution temperature. The effects of flow conditions, solution oxidation, the presence of metallic copper and retention time are also considered. Based on the various relationships developed, possibilities for plant optimization are discussed.

Fuel problems of two lesser developed countries (LDC 's) are presented. In particular, the paper reviews cement technology and the fuel-intensive cement industries of the Philippines and South Korea. Based on current financial and cost data, analyses are presented of the proposed substitution of high-sulfur and slow-sulfur American coal in place of fuel oil. The analyses show that economic substitution of coal for oil is not only based on relative prices for coal and oil, as expected, but also to be an inverse function of degree of intensity of energy use, and a direct function of financial incentives such as accelerated depreciation, taxes on the savings made by the use of coal, and cost of capital.

Techniques for in-situ dewatering of tailings and slimes include evaporation, decantation, drainage under self weight, drainage by surcharging, and electro-osmosis. A promising technique for increasing drainage efficiency is a vertical, wall-drain system, which can be constructed in an impoundment concurrently with deposition of slurried tailings. The vertical drains, which can be constructed from sand or from the coarse fraction of a tailings stream, greatly speed the rate of consolidation of the fine tailings or slimes. The performance of a wall drain system and the semitidy of consolidation efficiency to certain variables or system parameters are examined. These parameters include the slime deposition rate, ratio of drain to slime permeability, drain width, and drain spacing.

Rep. William S. Hill (R.- Colo.) will preside over a Congressional hearing investigating the problems of the mining industry to be conducted in Phoenix, Ariz., late in April. Rep. Hill has expressed the desire to hear from the industry itself all possible testimony on the needs of domestic mining and how Congress can help. Rep. John J. Rhodes of Arizona is also expected to attend the hearing. Two new features are incorporated into an SO2 process for treatment of low grade manganese ores disclosed by Chemical Construction Corp. The new approach includes a high temperature autoclaving step and a sintering operation. Data was given for work performed on Cuyuna Range ores.

KYANITE schists in the Sudbury area have been generally described by Haw,1 who has also given particular information on preliminary treatment of three large samples from Dryden township, Ontario.2 Kyanite, garnet, biotite, quartz, and feldspar comprise the main ingredients of this ore. Kyanite is the valuable mineral. About 5 ½ tons of -35 +200 mesh product, made by dry rod milling, screening, and separation on the Exolon magnetic separator, were available for treatment by flotation. Magnetic separation had effectively reduced garnet and biotite so that flotation feed consisted essentially of kyanite, quartz, and feldspar, the kyanite content averaging 32 pct and representing about 86 pct of the kyanite in the original ore.

The US Bureau of Mines assessed the geological effects on the ratio of maximum subsidence and extraction thickness, known as the subsidence factor, to develop a simple method for predicting the maximum subsidence. The study is restricted to the Northern Appalachian Coal Basin where data were collected from 13 coal mines. A model previously developed to relate the subsidence factor with the lithology and with the width and depth of working panels was used in the assessment. The result shows the possibility of determining maximum subsidence without resorting to a rigorous method.

THE Three Kids mine, some six miles east of Henderson, Nev., is in a typical southwest desert area, with high dry summer heat and cool to cold winter seasons. The manganese deposit was located during World War I.1 During this period 15,000 to 20,000 tons of ore assaying up to 41 pct manganese were shipped. Interest in the deposit was not revived until the middle thirties, when experiments on the ore were initiated. Test work indicated possible recovery of only 70 pct by flotation, but in 1941 additional work was done at the Boulder City pilot plant of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and also by M. A. Hanna Co. As a result, the Manganese Ore Co. was formed and a plant utilizing the SO, process was constructed. Numerous operation difficulties ensued, and the plant was closed when the manganese situation in the country eased.

An experimental investigation of the thermal and mechanical responses of rock materials to laser radiation is described. Specifically, the following three topics have been studied in detail: 1. Temperature measurements on thin discs subjected to laser radiation. 2. Strain measurements on thin discs subjected to laser radiation. 3. Observation and evaluation of cracking and spalling phenomena in constrained and unconstrained thin discs respectively, subjected to laser radiation. In conjunction with the experimental work done, use was made of a heat flow analysis and a stress analysis program developed for this purpose. It was possible to theoretically predict the thermal and mechanical responses of a rock specimen to laser radiation and then compare them with experimental observations. Good correlations were obtained.

In this Monograph are presented operating data, operating costs, plant descriptions, and detailed flowsheets of twenty seven different cyanidation plants around the world. Twenty three of these are gold producers and four are primarily silver producers. With one exception, (Pueblo Viejo scheduled to start up in late 1974), all of the plants are operating at the time of this writing. Selection of operations was based on metallurgy and were grouped into free milling lode ores, other free milling ores, ores requiring sulfide flotation in addition to cyanidation, ores requiring roasting, telluride ores, South African ores, and silver ores. Each of the plants described illustrates some unique form of cyanidation metallurgy. It is the hope of the authors that publication of this Monograph will be an aid to metallurgists in bringing new and successful cyanidation ventures into operation.
