Manufacture of lightweight concrete aggregate from common shale is one of the most rapidly growing industries in the field of nonmetallic or industrial minerals. Although expanded shale" has been in use since it was developed by Stephen J. Hayde in 1917, it was not until after World War II that it became a substantial competitor with other aggregates. There are some 70 plants now producing this aggregate in the United States, approximately half of them in states west of the Mississippi River. Expanding plants throughout the U. S. are grouped around major urban centers such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Denver. Concrete made with expanded shale aggregate combines the desirable features of low weight with relatively high strength, making it especially useful in concrete block, in structural concrete for multi-story buildings and in a variety of specialized concrete products such as prestressed panels and beams, and storage tanks. As the cost of construction continues to rise, lightweight concrete will probably be used in increasing quantities because of its low cost relative to the more traditional construction materials such as wood, brick and steel

PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic location or seam characteristics modem raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Underground preparation involves choosing those portions of the bed which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving (1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another the (1) petrography of the coal in the bed does not re- main uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content and petrography are of considerable interest and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal. The prospecting and evaluation of any area containing one or more salable coal beds by means of channel samples taken from outcrop openings and/or from diamond-drill cores can yield valuable data on coal characteristics. By correlating the data developed from distinct petrographic sections of channel and/or drill core samples, the quality of the bed according to stratification will be evident. There are few coal beds that do not show wide variations of such characteristics as ash and sulfur

THE problem of making a building unit combining the necessary physical and mechanical properties and good thermal insulation has been foremost in the minds of architects and ceramic and construction engineers for many years. This paper presents the results of studies on thermally expanding shales or clays to produce light-weight cellular products suitable for making building units. An expanded clay block suitable for building purposes should be large enough so that substantial savings may be effected in labor costs in laying the wall. The permeability should be low and it should have sufficiently good "dry-wall" characteristics to permit exposing the exterior surface to the elements, and to permit plastering directly the inside wall surface. The thermal conductivity should be low and the mechanical properties should be adequate. Obviously, a unit possessing satisfactory qualities for constructing an outside wall would be satisfactory for interior walls and for back-up purposes. The results of studies on bloating various shales or clays[t] and the properties of the expanded products are reported. In another paper1 basic factors involved in bloating of clays are discussed. Manufacturers of ceramic products, particularly structural clay, may encounter bloating of the ware during burning, and precautions must be followed to avoid this phenomenon. About 1927 the C. F. Burgess Laboratories, Madison, Wis., while carrying on an investigation for the American Face Brick Research Corporation, conceived the idea of intentionally bloating clay while holding it in a restrained condition, with the hope of producing a unitary cellular mass. Work was carried on until about 1931, when studies were terminated because of business conditions. These studies were continued later by The Western Brick Co., Danville, Ill., which developed a process of "inwardly expansive bloating."2 The major purpose of the latter investigation was to produce back-up tile to compete with concrete blocks made from Haydite or cinder aggregate. Haydite is a light-weight aggregate formed by heating certain clays or shales rapidly in a rotary kiln. While the investigations at the C. F. Burgess Laboratories or at Western Brick Co. were not carried far enough to lead to the commercial production of material for the construction of walls, particularly outside walls, they showed that certain clays could be thermally expanded and that it was possible to produce a material of low permeability with a large percentage of the total voids or cells closed. In their paper on the directional properties in cold-rolled and annealed commercial bronze,' Phillips and Samans suggest that cupronickel, under distinctly different treatments, shows both "45" ears" and "90" ears. Fig. I shows the ears on some cupronickel cups made some 17 years ago for bullet jackets for small arms ammunition. In this case the material heated to 425° C. had "45" ears, while that annealed at 950°C. showed long "90" ears" when drawn with the same tools. The method of cupping, the shape of cupping tools, etc., were found to have very little influence on the earing tendency, but the deeper the cup was drawn, the higher the ears would be. Method of Manufacture Cupronickel cast bars were 1 in. thick. Ordinarily, they were rolled with numerous passes to a thickness of 0.4 to 0.2 in., according to conditions. They were then given a single intermediate anneal, and rolled to finish thickness, frequently 0.032 in. After a last anneal the material was cupped with a "cut and draw" operation. The state of stress in the region where core discing initiates has been investigated through the use of three-dimensional photoelastic models and the results of this study have been compared with those of a previous investigation of rock models. This comparison showed that discing initiates at a point of maximum shear stress, but that the magnitude of the shear stress, as determined photoelastically, is much larger than the shear strength of the rock as deter-mined from conventional triaxial testing. Moreover the shear stress required to produce discing is not constant, but depends on the applied stress field. Possible explanations for these effects are included in this article. In both exploration core drilling and overcore drilling to determine the stress in rock, occasional sections of the core obtained are broken into a series of discs.I* This discing phenomenon has been investigated in the laboratory to ascertain the state of stress required to produce it. The objective of the study was to obtain information that would make it possible to approximate the state of stress in subsurface rock from which disced cores are obtained. Referred to as the discing test, this laboratory study was conducted to determine the applied axial and radial loads required to produce discing in cylinders of rock from several sources. The dimensions of these cylinders are given in Fig. 1. Discing was produced by first applying an axial load to the cylinder and then diamond drilling the core along its axis. The radial load was then incrementally increased until discing initiated. The discs fractured or ruptured* on surfaces approximately normal to the axis of the core (planes A, B, C, D, E, Fig. 2). In many instances, the bottommost disc fractured before the drill had advanced past the points F and F', cre- ating a mush room-shaped fracture surface FEF'. Alternatively, it was also found that the same shaped fracture surface could be created by first drilling in an unloaded core to some point, say F and F', and then triaxially loading the core until fracture occurred on the plane FEF'. Jaeger and cook4 produced similar fracture surfaces in specimens subjected only to a radial biaxial load. From these laboratory studies and observations made in the field, it can be inferred that fracture or rupture initiates in the proximity of the lowest point in the kerf area, (at F and F', Fig. 2) and that the fracture or rupture surface progresses inward from this point. The experiments described above, however, do not provide any information as to the state of stress at the point at which fracture or rupture initiates. In the investigation discussed in the following sections, a three-dimensional photoelastic analysis was conducted to determine the stress distribution in the proximity of the kerf area of a triaxially loaded plastic (epoxy) cylinder containing a short section of core.

In open pit mining, as in other industries, it has I become necessary to improve operating efficiency in order to combat higher labor and supply costs. Moreover, orebodies are becoming leaner, pits are getting deeper, stripping ratios are increasing, and hauls are getting longer. There has been a steady increase in size, speed of operation, and reliability of the various machines involved in breaking, loading, and hauling ore. Changes have seldom been radical but are rather the result of steady improvement. Drilling: Notable advances have been made in the use of rotary drills and air powered percussion drills for blasthole drilling. Several hundred of these machines are now in use as replacements for churn drills in softer rocks such as limestone and shale. Their application to hard rocks such as iron ore and taconite is under current investigation, but in the Lake Superior iron mining district, open pit blast-hole drilling in ore has been accomplished almost exclusively by standard churn drilling. The only recent advance has been the use of larger machines drilling 9-in. holes. This has increased drilling speed somewhat and allowed wider hole spacing, with consequent cost reduction.

Bureau of Mines research has resulted in the development of fluid- bed ion-exchange columns for recovering uranium from slime pulps. In pilot plant tests, slime slurries containing up to 6 percent solids were processed at flow rates of 10 gallons per square foot per minute with high uranium recoveries and efficient resin loadings. Uranium was effectively eluted in a laboratory fluid-bed elution column at eluate-to-resin ratios of less than 5:1 and eluate flow rates of 3 gallons per square foot per minute. Construction costs of mills using these improved ion exchange techniques are estimated to be 25 percent less than for mills using solvent extraction of clear solutions. For mills having a capacity of 2,000 to 2,500 tons of ore per day, the saving would be in the range of $2.5 million. In addition, a saving of about $0.80 per ton of ore in total operating costs is indicated.

M. Balicki—As one who some years ago spent much time searching for an alloy with high thermoelectric power that would be suitable for heat energy-electric energy converter based on the principle of a thermoelectric pile, I would like to make a few comments touching upon that aspect of this excellent paper. The specifications which one of the authors has formulated so aptly do not appear to me as complete, and I would like to add to them the following two demands: (1) Melting point not less than 500°C and (2) elongation on 2 in. at least 5 pct. Condition 1 would insure good thermodynamic efficiency of the pile by permitting a reasonably high temperature of the hot junction and at the same time making it suitable for such application as salvage of vast amounts of energy which is lost in the form of sensible heat of waste gas leaving industrial and other furnaces. Condition 2 is also a very important one; particularly, because of the fact that all elements and alloys which exhibit attractive thermoelectric properties seem to be as a rule very brittle. The design, erection, and maintenance of a pile incorporating a brittle material in one of the most crucial parts of the converter would be a very difficult and costly affair indeed. To illustrate this point I may mention great difficulties I encountered when trying to make thermocouples of silicon. Casting of 1/4-in. rods in iron or graphite mould yielded only broken pieces which had to be welded into a bar. Such a bar had to be handled very carefully during the determinations. Raising the molten silicon by vacuum into a silica tube and solidifying it there solved the problem of stability as well as that of electrical insulation of a bar. On tests this bar (98.5 pct Si) showed dE/dT = — 275.5 microvolts per degree C vs. copper. Thermocouples made of this grade of silicon and pure nickel developed 0.39 v when temperature of the hot junction was approximately 1000°C. The possibility Dr. Gonser has mentioned of trying to impart to metals good thermoelectric properties by alloying them with silicon, has been considered. The preliminary survey which I have made was, however, disappointing. Perhaps, it will be advisable to record the results obtained (table VI), as this might save repetition of search in fields already covered.

The structure and morphology of thermoelastic and burst type martensitic phases that form upon cooling in Cu-Zn-Si p phase alloys have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The martensitic phases are composed of a lamellar mixture of two close-packed structures with different stacking sequence, namely ABCBCACAB (orthorhombic) and ABC (fcc). Striations within thermoelastic martensite are most likely produced during interaction with impinging burst-type martensite and not as a consequence of secondary shears. In a study of the martensitic transformation in ternary Cu-Zn based 0 phase alloys1 the dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, M,, with composition shows variations for elements within a constant valence subgroup and between different subgroups. Such variations are not reflected in a change in habit plane, which is approximately the same for each ternary alloy, namely in the vicinity of (2, 11, 12 Ip. The fact that the habit plane remained constant, despite large differences in M, temperature and electron concentration, suggested2 that the crystal structures of the martensitic phases could be nearly the same. Crystal structures of ternary Cu-Zn based martensites have been determined recently for alloys containing the three-valent elements gallium3, 4 and aluminm. The present studies have been made to examine the structures and morphology of the martensitic phase in ternary Cu-Zn based alloys containing a four-valent element, silicon. I) PROCEDURE Two alloys were prepared by melting and casting weighed quantities of the component high-purity metals in sealed quartz tubes under half an atmosphere of argon. They were subsequently remelted by levitation under a protective atmosphere of argon. After allowing for losses of zinc as determined by the difference in weight before and after casting, the compositions in atomic percent of both alloys were established to be Cu-33.5 Zn-1.8 Si and Cu-27 Zn-5.0 Si. These alloys were homogenized in the P-phase field for 2 days at 800" C. Bulk samples consisted of a martensite phase at room temperature, the M, temperature being approximately 30' and 200" for the 1.8 and the 5 pct Si alloys, respectively. Thin disks were cut from the ingots using a spark machine, and they were heated for 5 min at 800' and quenched into water in order to obtain martensite. These slices were thinned chemically at room temperature in a solution consisting of 40 parts HN03, 50 part H3PO4, and 10 parts HC1 and thinned further electrolytically by the Window technique, using a voltage of 15 to 25 v and a mixture of 1 part HN03 and 2 parts methanol, which was kept at a temperature near -30° c. Foils were examined by transmission electron microscopy using a Philips EM 200 electron microscope. 11) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) Structure and Morphology. Fig. 1 shows the martensitic phase in the alloy containing 1.8 at. pct Si. This phase is composed of contiguous platelets, each containing striations. The direction of the striations changes at the boundary between individual platelets. These internal markings resemble the striations that are usually identified as stacking faults, as for example in Cu-A1 martensites6-a or the lamellar mixture of two close-packed phases in Cu-Zn-Ga marten-sites.3p '9 lo In the present alloys, selected-area diffraction experiments have been obtained in order to determine the nature of the striations. Figs. 2(a), (61, and (c) are electron diffraction patterns of an area inside a single martensite plate. Fig. 2(a) contains diffraction spots which correspond to two close-packed structures with different stacking sequences, namely ABCBCACAB (orthorhombic) and ABC (fcc). Spots belonging only to the fcc structure are indicated by arrows. By tilting the foil either the orthorhombic structure, Fig. 2(b), or the cubic structure shown in Fig. 2(c) may be obtained. When the foil is oriented so that only the diffraction spots of the orthorhornbic structure are present, bright-field illumination shows small lamellae, as seen in Fig. 3. In this figure the lamellae that belong to the fcc structure are bright bands inside the dark extinction contours of the orthorhombic structure. The boundaries of the lamellae are parallel to the basal planes of the orthorhombic structure and to the {Ill} planes of the cubic structure, the close-packed directions of both structures being parallel. The 5 pct Si alloy shows similar features as those described for the 1.8 at. pct Si alloy.

During five underground mine fires which occurred in Arizona during 1980 and 1981, sealing the fire area became necessary. To minimize leakage into the fire area, ventilation control measures were instituted to balance pressure across the bulkheads. Problems en- countered in sealing the fire areas and measures taken to improve these conditions are discussed. The routing of the ventilation and ventilation control to en- sure the workers' safety were also important considerations in reopening the mines. The use of continuous CO monitors is discussed. One important consideration was the condition of the fire, and chromatographic analysis was used to establish this. Graphs comparing the Trickett ratio, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxygen concentrations are given. The Trickett ratio was useful but needed to be augmented by the comparison of CO, C02, and 02. Problems with getting good samples from sealed areas and recommended procedures that were developed during these fires are discussed.

Use of electric-wheel-driven haulage trucks at Chino dates back to 1963, and in today's fleet of 38 units, 17 trucks are electric-wheel- type powered with 700 hp diesel engines. Output of these engines is not adequate to exploit fully the 1200 hp potential of the two electric- wheel-drive motors, and, as a result, Chino has been testing larger prime power sources. An earlier test involved the use and evaluation of 1000 hp gas turbine engine in a conventional Model M-100 Unit Rig haulage truck (see [ ], May 1967, pp. 57-60). Now Chino has tested a trolley-diesel application in the same 100-ton capacity vehicle, and has shown that trolley power on electric-wheel-drive trucks can improve productivity rates from 18-36% on adverse grades, depending, of course, upon haul road profiles.

IN Chemical Phenomena of Iron Smelting, Mr. Bell gives the weight of materials required to fill furnaces of various sizes at the Clarence Works ; as this differs very much from the weight required for furnaces at Glendon, where anthracite and magnetic and brown iron-ores are used, a comparison is interesting. Taking furnaces at Glendon of 4800 and 11,900 cubic feet capacity and comparing them with the Clarence furnaces of 6000 cubic feet and 11,500 cubic feet, we find that the 4800 cubic feet at Glendon and the 6000 cubic feet at Clarence required respectively-

Surface mine operators have organized a voluntary group known as the Mined-Land Conservation Conference for the specific purpose of developing and expanding reclamation programs on mined land. As a part of the Conference program, a Voluntary Industry Program was adopted and subscribed to by its membership. This program stated: "The basic approach to a sound conservation program is the restoration of mined land to its most practical and productive use within the shortest possible time . . . reclamation of mined lands, including planting to grasses or tress, should be done on a planned basis, under technical guidance by personnel trained in this field."

Adsorption of potassium dodecyl xanthate from aqueous solutions on artificial and natural zinc sul-fides was studied by means of infrared absorption spectroscopy. The adsorption species and their stabilities varied depending upon the conditions of the surfaces of the zinc sulfides. Adsorption products were analyzed after they had been removed from the surface with pyridine. Zinc dodecyl xanthate was confirmed for surfaces covered with oxidized products while dodecyl alcohol and carbon disulfide were detected on purified or weakly oxidized surfaces. It is of great significance to study the adsorbed species of collectors on the surface of sulfide minerals with a view of increasing our understanding of the mechanism of flotation. Compared with other methods, infrared spectroscopy promises to be of particular value in determining the nature of the species adsorbed at the mineral/solution interface since it gives direct identification of the adsorption products; and, furthermore, it has an advantage over the electron diffraction technique which has been employed in similar problems in that infrared spectroscopy utilizes radiation of very low energy so that the probability of changing the unstable surface films during examination should be correspondingly decreased. Infrared spectroscopic studies concerned with sulfide mineral flotation have already been reported by several investigators on zinc sulfide-hexanthi01' and lead sulfide-xanthate2,3 systems. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the adsorption of potassium dodecyl xanthate (KDX) at the zinc sulfide-aqueous solution interface by means of infrared spectroscopy. Rarely is the pure zinc sulfide-xanthate system encountered in practical flotation since zinc sulfide is usually activated with small amounts of certain metallic ions, such as copper ion. However, investigation of the pure zinc sulfide-xanthate system appeared promising for studying the fundamental mechanism of the adsorption of xanthate on the sulfide minerals. Although there are few cases where xanthates having an alkyl radical higher than hexyl are employed in practical operations, KDX was used in this study since it was reported that the adsorbability of xanthate on zinc sulfide was increased with an increasing number of carbon atoms of the alkyl radicals.4 EXPERIMENTAL Samples: Experiments were made on artificial zinc sulfide and natural sphalerite. The artificial zinc sulfide was obtained commercially from Dainihon Toryo Co. as a fluorescent pigment of the purest grade A. Considering the fact that there are often cases where the surface of sulfide minerals are apt to be oxidized so that the adsorption of xanthate at sulfide mineral/solution interfaces may be substantially affected, two different procedures were employed in preparing the samples of the artificial zinc sulfide. 1) The zinc sulfide was washed with hot concentrated ammonium chloride solution (300 g per liter) to remove surface oxidation products and followed by washing with deoxygenated hot distilled water by centrifugation until the constant electric conductivity of the solution was reached (Sample I) (specific conductivity of the solution = 8.6 x l0-5 ohm-' cm-'). 2) Sample I in a suspension of 5% by weight was oxidized with a 1.5% aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution for about one hour, and then was washed with distilled water as mentioned in the preparation of Sample I (Sample 11) (specific conductivity of the solution = 1.0 x 10"4 ohm-' cm-'). Both Samples I and II were dried under vacuum and stored in a vacuum desiccator. The specific surface areas of the samples determined by the BET method using carbon dioxide gas were 19 x l04 cm2 per g for Sample I and 35 x l04 cm2 per g for Sample 11. In addition, a sample which was derived from Sample I was also prepared. In 40 ml of 3 x 10-2 M zinc sulfate solution was placed 2 g of Sample I for 2 hours, washed with distilled water by successive centrifugation until no sulfate ion could be detected and dried under vacuum (Sample 111). Operating and research personnel at U.S. Steel's Pilotac concentrator have evolved specifications for magnetic separators suitable for use in beneficiation of Mesabi magnetic taconite. These specifications were developed as a result of investigations into the operating and metallurgical problems at the Pilotac concentrator over a period of some ten years. This paper discusses primary magnetic separator specifications, but much of the information is also pertinent to secondary and tertiary magnetic separators. Of particular significance is the proposal of a new basis for specifying the magnetic field which includes consideration of both field strength and field gradient. Other areas of discussion include flowsheet service, operating conditions such as drum speed and pulp level, tank configuration, magnet strength including field gradient, sleeve bearing design, designation of corrosion resistant materials and other details that result in a metallurgically efficient machine that has low repair and maintenance requirements. The mechanical and metallurgical design of magnetic separators at the Pilotac plant, Minnesota Ore Operations, United States Steel Corp. has progressed from the original single-stage, belt-type machines to the present multiple-stage, drum-type units, In ten years of operation, the plant operating and research personnel, in consultation with manufacturers, have made design changes to improve mechanical, electrical and magnetic features to meet process needs as flowsheet designs developed and to incorporate new permanent magnet materials as they became available. Separator specifications were an end result of this effort. The latest specifications which were developed for the Minnesota Ore Operations' plant were not all-inclusive listings; they covered only those points indicated by plant experience. For example, magnet pole piece design and dimensions were not stated. The manufacturers were given freedom to use any design as long as the field pattern was as specified. The selection of the items to be included in the specifications was undoubtedly influenced by particular conditions at Pilotac such as composition of plant water, concentration characteristics of the ore, repair and maintenance facilities available and the research programs that had been conducted. Only the developments leading to the specifications for a primary or "cobber" magnetic separator are presented in this paper. However, the same general concepts are used to specify secondary and tertiary separators. The areas of interest discussed include flowsheet service, tank configuration, magnet design, bearings, materials of construction, and some minor mechanical details. FLOWSHEET SERVICE The primary magnetic separators in the Pilotac Concentrator flowsheet are located after the first stage of grinding as shown in Fig. 1.
