The homogeneity and microstrcture of zone-leveled Ge-Si alloys haw been investigated by sellera1 physical techniques and by metallography as a function of growth rate in the range 3 x 10 1x10 cm-sec', and as a system of alloy composition throughout the system. The temperature gradient at the solid-liquid interface was about 50 deg-cm-' Cellular or dendritic structures char-acteristic of constitutional supercooling were ob-served except at very slow growth rates, which ranged from about 2 x 10 cm -sec for Ge 1 sio alloy to about 2 X 10'5 cm-sec'1 for Ge .sSio.s alloy. Using a simple model similiar to that employed for dilute solid the dependence upon compo-sition over the entire system of the critical growth rate for the onset of constiutional supercooling was calculated, and was .found to he in good agreement with the experimental results. THE recent discovery of the low thermal conductivity of Ge-Si alloys' at high temperatures has revealed that these alloys have high efficiencies for thermoelectric-power generation.', Therefore, a reliable method was needed for the preparation of homogeneous samples required for definitive measurements throughout this alloy system. Due to the low diffusion rates in the solid alloys, the segregated samples obtained by quenching a melt are not readily homogenized by annealing.475 However. isothermal solidification from a melt of constant composition can produce uniform material. Of the available semiconductor crystal-growth procedures, the zone-leveling technique6 applied to a complete solid-solution alloy system by Wang and Alexander' and by others provides a simple method of doing this. In the present work, the homogeneity and microstructure of zone-leveled alloys have been correlated with growth conditions, and the conditions for preparing homogeneous Ge-Si alloys have been established. This has provided insight into the solidification process of alloy semiconductors. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sample Preparation. The Ge-Si alloy phase diagram4 shown in Fig. l(a) consists of a complete series of solid solutions. The zone-leveling technique used to prepare most of the samples consists of moving a zone of liquidus composition (C1) through charge material of the corresponding solidus composition (C,), as is illustrated in Figs. l(b) and l(c). To prepare the charge materials, high-purity germanium and silicon were pulverized in a steel hammer mill, cleaned magnetically, and melted together to make uniform chill castings. The zone leveling was carried out in a resistance-heated furnace similar to that of Mitrenin et al.' shown in Fig. 2. However, a few specimens of high silicon content were prepared by the Czochralski technique. The growth rate ranged from 3.5 x X6 to 1.2 X 10~3 cm-sec-'. Greaves-Walker has since established an international reputation in that field. Before accepting his present position as professor and head of the department of ceramic engineering at the State College unit of the University of North Carolina, Dr. Greaves-Walker spent twenty years in the ceramic and mining industries in Kentucky, Utah, Ohio, Alabama, Ontario, Pennsylvania, and Georgia successively, holding the positions of chief chemist, mining engineer, chief engineer, sales engineer, chief of research, production manager, and finally vice-president. This industrial experience resulted in his building up one of the outstanding departments of its kind in the country.

The adsorption characteristics of sodium silicate on scheelite, calcite, and fluorite minerals were investigated. Adsorption equilibrium took about 60 minutes. Adsorption data show that the masimum amounts of adsorption of sodium silicate occurs at about pH 9.8. The adsorptivity was in the order of calcite > fluorite > scheelite. The amount of adsorption of sodium silicate increased with the increase in temperature of sodium silicate solutions. The amount of adsorption of sodium silicate decreases in the low concentration range of ferrous sulfate, while in the high concentration range of ferrous sulfate, the adsorption of sodium silicate increases.

The trend of American construction toward permanence and longevity is noticeable in the more recent coal plant installations; also, the policy of many coal operators has changed from seeking to obtain the desired tonnage from several plants of small capacities to designing a single installation to produce the whole amount. The mine openings and plant of the Nemacolin mine of The Buckeye Coal Co., are located on the Greene County side of the Monongahela River, 73 miles south of Pittsburgh. The map (Fig. 1) shows the general location, also the Lambert syncline. This syncline partly accounts for the selection of the site; the other reasons were the possibilities of rail and river shipments. Two shafts and a slope were sunk to the coal, work starting on all three in the second half of the year 1917. The air shaft was sunk to a depth of 243 ft. and completed in February, 1918; the slope was completed in November, and the skip shaft was stopped at a depth of 21 ft. below the coal, then the concrete lining was stopped 8 ft. above the coal August, 1918. Work on the skip shaft was resumed May, 1923, and sunk to a depth of 60 ft. below the coal by September, but it was not until May, 1924, that the lining was poured. Max. Min. The surface plan shows the relative positions of the openings. Coal was first hoisted from the air shaft May 7, 1918, and entry driving was continued; but the coal had to be stored, as the railroad had not been extended from Crucible to Nemacolin. As soon as the slope was driven to the coal and the linings concreted, the entries were driven along projected lines to connect with those advancing from the air shaft, and skip shaft. As soon as the underground connections had been made between the two shafts, the hoisting by buckets was inaugurated at the skip shaft and construction on the fan at the air shaft started.

IN 1945-1946, the author measured temper brittle-ness in ingots of varying composition prepared by remelting SAE 3135 bar stock under vacuum. Since other investigators1-" have been referring to this hitherto unpublished work, belated publication seems worthwhile. Steel in 7 lb batches&apos; was induction melted with nickel additions in a magnesia crucible under a pressure of 10 microns of Hg or less and cast into a 2 in. diam chill mold. The compositions of ingots A, B, and C prepared in this way are shown in Table I; the vacuum melting lowered carbon, manganese, sulphur, and nitrogen content. Ingot B was homogenized 24 hr at 1095°C; ingots A and C were not homogenized. Blanks, M in. square, were cut from each ingot, austenitized 1 hr at 870°C, water quenched, tempered 1 hr at 595"C, and water quenched. Half the blanks from each ingot were given an embrittling treatment of 50 hr at 455°C and water quenched. A few specimens, embrittled and unembrittled, were finally heated 1 hr at 580°C and water quenched. Charpy specimens machined from the blanks were V-notched on the side closest to ingot mid-radius and paired as to radial position in the ingot, one of each pair having received the embrittling treatment and the other not. Specimens were broken in a standard impact machine at various temperatures, the same temperature, in general, being used for both bars of a pair. Fig. 1 shows the results. It is evident that temper brittleness, as measured by the increase in temperature of transition from brittle to tough failure introduced by the 455°C treatment, was decreased but not eliminated by reducing carbon to 0.006 pct, manganese to < 0.004 pct, and nitrogen to 0.001 pct. In another study," temper brittleness was apparently eliminated by -reducing carbon to 0.003 pct, with 0.80 pct Mn and 0.0015 pct N (ingot D)." • Analyses given for carbon below 0.02 pct were made by Jensen method; for nitrogen, by Kjehldahl method. Values quoted else-where&apos;-&apos;." for carbon content of ingot C and for nitrogen content of ingot D were obtained by conventional combustlon and by vacuum fusion methods, respectively, and are considered much less accurate. The 580°C final treatment removed previous em-brittlement (ingot B particularly), indicating that this was "reversible embrittlement."" Metallographic examination of ingot C with 1 pct nital etch revealed only ferrite; ingot A had carbide spheroids uniformly distributed in a ferrite matrix. With ethereal picric acid plus zephiran chloride etchant.&apos; no differences between embrittled and un- embrittled specimens of ingots A, B, or C were noted. Fracture of C and D below the transition temperature was predominantly transcrystalline, with traces of intercrystalline, in both embrittled and unembrittled conditions. The corresponding fracture of unembrittled B was mixed transcrystalline and intercrystalline; of embrittled B, predominantly intercrystalline with some transcrystalline areas. . . . The study of the high-temperature oxidation of pure metals, intensively pursued experimentally since the pioneer work of Pilling and Bedworth1 and supplemented by the recent theoretical work of Wagner2 is now well advanced. The important field of low-temperature oxidation—i.e., oxidation extending only through the temper color range of thicknesses with the formation of thin oxide layers in the range from 0 to 1000-2000 ?ngstroms—has not, however, reached so satisfactory a state, owing largely to the experimental difficulties that attend the formation and study of thin films; most of the work has been performed on abraded specimens whose surface irregularities approximated the thickness of the films formed. It has been pointed out that the rates of oxidation of different crystal faces are different and that the difierence may be related to the orientation relationships that obtain between the metal crystal and the superimposed oxide crystal; it has also been suggested that this orientation dependence should manifest itself in rates of oxidation and perhaps also of corrosion in aggregates bearing preferred orientations.3&apos;4 An attempt to measure the rates of oxidation of different crystal faces of alpha iron demonstrated this difference in rate,4 but the dependence of rate on orientation was not simple; the method of measuring thickness, consisting of a color comparison with barium stearate multi-films of known thickness, was not wholly satisfactory. For these reasons it was felt that a study of the rate of oxidation of single crystals prepared with surfaces as smooth as possible, using a sensitive method giving true film thickness, should be profitable. Copper was chosen because of the ease of reduction of the primary oxide film and because the orientation relationships between metal and oxide and the composition of the oxide films formed at low temperatures are known; for thin films formed at low temperatures, Cu2O alone occurs.22-24 Experimental Procedure Various methods of surface preparation were attempted in order to obtain a surface that would oxidize uniformly and repro-ducibly. Electrolytic polishing by the method of Jacquet5 and electrolytic and mechanical polishing followed by annealing in vacuum and in purified hydrogen at various temperatures were tested. The procedure finally adopted consisted in a fine metallographic polish followed by an anneal in purified hydrogen at temperatures of 900° to 1000°C. for 12 hr. or more. The surface so produced was very bright and smooth, with no trace of specular etching (though some grain-boundary etching was observed); indeed, fine scratches produced by the final polish were entirely removed by the high-temperature anneal. After this treatment, the specimens were cooled in hydrogen to room temperature and placed in the oxidation furnace, where

Recently the short-time tensile properties of several high-strength materials have been studied at temperatures up to 375°F. This paper deals with stress-rupture and [ ] creep properties at the same temperatures. The work was done at the University of California as a portion of the project NRC-548. It was financed by the War Production Board and was supervised by the Office of Production Research and Development. This paper has been released for publication by the latter agency. The following materials were studied, all in the form of 0.040-in. sheet: Alclad 24S-T Alclad 24S-T8I Alclad 24S-T86 Alclad 75S-T R301-T (clad) [ ] Specimens were loaded in tension in the cross-grain direction. Testing temperatures included 94°F., 211°F., 300°F., and 375°F. Stress levels were selected to cause rupture in times ranging from several minutes to boo hr. THE World. Engineering Congress closed as it opened, with a brilliant and dignified ceremony. On Oct. 29, 1929, there were hearty speeches of welcome and of hope for the successful issue of this international gathering; on Nov. 7, the farewells were even more heartfelt expressions, and anticipation gave place to, realization. H. I. H. Prince Yasuhito of Chichibu, who had graciously opened the Congress; was unavoidably absent at the closing ceremony, being on duty with his command at the Army maneuvers, so that the principal speech was made by the President of the Congress, Baron Furuichi. The outstanding statistics of the meetings were: an over-all attendance, delegates and members, of 800 from overseas and 2800 Japanese 83 sectional meetings, all. meetings having practically capacity attendance, this being especially true of Section 11, mining and metal¬lurgy, where standing room only was commonly the rule; and 780 papers were presented, in full or in abstract or by title. H. I. H. Prince Chichibu attended each section on Oct. 31. The large attendance of Japanese students was notable at most sections.

HenRy Clay FRick, a pioneer in modern coke and steel industry and, in more recent years, one of the outstanding financiers of America, died on Dec. 2, 1919, at his home on Fifth Avenue, New York. Although he had been ill since election day, when he had an attack of indigestion which developed into ptomaine poisoning, his death was a surprise to all. He is survived by his widow, Adelaide Howard Childs Frick; a son, Childs Frick, one unmarried daughter, Helen C. Frick, and four grandchildren. A quiet funeral service was conducted at the Frick home on Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. Dr. Leighton Parks, pastor of St. Bartholomew&apos;s Episcopal Church. This was attended by members and very intimate friends of the family, Trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Officers of the Links Club, and Directors of the United States Steel Corpn. Henry Clay Frick was born Dec. 19, 1849, in West Overland, Westmoreland Co., Pa. His father, John W. Frick, was a farmer of Swiss ancestG, and his mother, Elizabeth Overholt Frick, a member of an old Mennonite family. Until he was sixteen, he spent his time at school, on his father&apos;s farm, and in his grandfather&apos;s distillery, where he kept books. He attended Otterbein University, in Ohio, for a year. Frick, learning that coke was an essential of the already rapidly developing steel business, early invested every cent he could get in coking-coal lands. With the help of an associate of his grandfather, he formed the corporation of Frick & Co., coke dealers, and acquired fifty-one ovens in the Connellsville region and 300 acres of soft-coal lands. During the panic of &apos;73, with the help of Judge Thomas Mellon, a Pittsburgh &apos;banker, he bought out his partners and while coke was selling at 90 cents a ton enlarged his purchases of suitable lands. Later, the price of coke increased until it was selling at $5 a ton. Before he was 30 years old, Frick was rated a millionaire. Association with CaRnegie In 1878, he sold an interest in the business Do E. M. Ferguson of New York, and later a share to Mr. Ferguson&apos;s brother. Four years later the business was reorganized into the H. C. Frick Coke Co. with vast coal lands, great banks of ovens, and a capitalization of $2,000,000. Then began his association with Andrew Carnegie. He exchanged a part of his coke interest for shares in Carnegie Brothers of Pittsburgh,

AS the Petroleum Division rounds off the first quarter century since its evolution from technical committee status, there steps to the long line of notable men who have presided over its activities a young man, currently of Tulsa, one Herbert F. Beardmore by name. For one year, as Chairman for 1946, the Division will be his oyster. hi; baby, his responsibility. "Herb" Beardmore was born at Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 6, 1904, and lived there until he was thirteen. Then his family moved to Oklahoma City, and later sent him to the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated in 1925 with a B.S. in engineering geology. His final year in college was the first year in which a petroleum engineering course was taught at the school. Since his course of study so closely paralleled that of a petroleum engineer, he has frequently been spoken of as the first petroleum engineering graduate from the University of Oklahoma. Out of college he went to work as an oil-field roustabout in the Ranger, Texas, field for Jake L. Hamon. This work consisted of all manual labor phases of cable-tool operation and beam-pumping of oil wells. He moved in 1926 to Bartlesville, to become a gas engineer for the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co., where he was employed in gas-well drilling, gas production, and transportation, mostly in Osage County, Oklahoma.

TENDENCIES toward nationalization grew noticeably stronger in some areas. Late last fall Bolivia took over the tin mines of four foreign operators and handed them a bill for a fabulous amount claimed for damages. In the same breath, the price Bolivia offered to pay for the mines appeared to many to be slightly ridiculous. Many engineers felt that the country would not be able to run the mines successfully. Even if they could, some thought that the Bolivian Government would gut the orebodies in an attempt to get at rich deposits for high profits, leaving the lean ores in unmineable condition.

Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr., had already achieved rare distinction as an able metallurgist, clear thinker, brilliant author, and wise consulting engineer to bankers and operators; he had achieved the essentials of a great career when dcath cut short his activities on Apr. 4, 1919, in the forty-ninth year of his age. He belonged to a family of iron blast-furnace men and mine managers. His father, Major J. E. Johnson, after serving with distinction in the Army of the North, identified himself with the iron mines and blast furnace at Longdale, Va., with which he was connected during almost his entire business life. It is significant, that, during those troublous times of reconstruction in the South, he enjoyed always the affection and respect of his neighbors and associates alike. From him his son obtained not only a thorough training in blast-furnace practice and iron mining, but great personal courage and force of character. His mother, who survives both her husband and sons, possesses rare intellectuality, humor and a tenderness and human sympathy which those who were privileged to know well J. E. Johnson, Jr., recognized beneath his exterior of aggressiveness and will power. In a recently published analysis of the qualities which characterize the world&apos;s great men, three traits stand out preeminently; viz., independence, courage, and intellectuality. Each of these characteristics J. E. Johnson, Jr., possessed in extraordinary degree. His early education was obtained under a private tutor at Longdale, and this circumstance probably enhanced a natural tendency to independence of character and individuality which, however, under the control of his unusual power of straight thinking and clear analysis never allowed him to go far astray. It has been said of him that if once he set his mind to a problem, however knotty, he scored a bull&apos;s-eye before the subject was dropped. His manner of attacking a subject involved first mastering the details of the available knowledge; then, putting this acquired information to one side, with an untrammeled mind blazing out a path of his own, so clear, so well-defined, and expressed in such simple terms that he illuminated the whole subject without distorting the original data or discussion. His two books, "Blast-furnace Construction in America" and "The Principles, Operation, and Products of the Blast Furnace, "on the iron blast furnace together form the most comprehensive, the most enlightening, and the most useful treatise on the subject ever produced in any language.
