The death of John Frederic Blandy, which occurred September 17, 1903, at Prescott, Arizona, terminated the earthly activity of one of the most active and able of the American mining engineers of the last generation. Mr. Blandy was born, April 24, 1833, at Newark, Delaware. His father was an Englishman, who had been in business in the island of Madeira, and had come thence to settle in the United States. At the age of eighteen, he was attached to the engineering field-corps of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad; but, after a year of this service, he went to Germany, where he spent three years, entering in 1852 the Mining Academy at Freiberg, Saxony. Graduates of that institution need not be told that, at the period referred to, it held unique prominence in its special field, not only by reason of the great investigators and instructors, such as Cotta, Breithaupt, Weisbach, Plattner and Gaetschmann, who belonged to its faculty and brilliantly blended theory and practice in its work, but also because rival institutions were few. It cannot be fairly said that Freiberg has fallen below its ancient standard of excellence. Its chairs of instruction are still occupied by eminent men, worthy successors of the illustrious teachers who preceded them. But a host of technical academies, especially in this country, munificently equipped and efficiently conducted, have come into existence during the last half-century; and no one institution can ever hereafter claim the pre-eminence which the Freiberg Mining Academy once enjoyed. In those days, American mining engineers returning with satisfactory credentials from that school were sure of immediate employment.

Prealloyed powders of nickel-base superalloys were sintered to almost theoretical density in short sinterilzg times. It was ascertained that the rapid densification was caused by a small amount of liquid phase at the grain boundaries, which apparently ovriginated by incipient melting at temperatures considerably below those at which macroscopic melting of the compacts occurred. An increase in the quantity of liquid phase present during sintering-, caused by an increase in the sintering temperature, increased the densification rate, but resulted in a decrease in the room temperature tensile propevties. NICKEL-base superalloys, which presently comprise an important group of high temperature alloys, are difficult to fabricate by the forging, casting, and machining operations presently used. As it was felt that fabrication by powder metallurgical techniques might offer advantages in the production of super-alloy parts, a basic investigation of the most important process in the sequence of powder metallurgical operations, the sintering process, was undertaken on Rene 41, Udirnet 500, and Nimonic 90 and 100 powders. These alloys age harden by the precipitation of the ? Ni, rA1,Ti) phase. Nickel-base superalloys of the Nimonic type have been fabricated by powder metallurgical methods, and their mechanical properties reported in detail.' The results of a recent study on the influence of continuous and conventional mining techniques on the size consist and washability characteristics of coal are presented. Eight samples, four each from continuous and conventional mining sections, were collected. Each sample was screened in seven size fractions, and each size fraction was totally fractionated at five gravities. The data thus collected were statistically examined for the influence significance of mining techniques, size, and gravity on the quality of the mined product. The paper presents the sample collection method, data gathering and analysis procedures, and major conclusions. The study revealed that there are pronounced differences in the products from the two mining systems and that conventional mining yielded a better product in terms of size consist, yield, ash, and sulfur in both the raw and washed products. The results of the study are significant in regard to consideration of resource utilization and conservation, and environmental impacts.

Thai means free. Historically accurate, as the country has never been subjugated by foreign occupation, the name "The Land of the Free" also seems to fit the attitude of the people. At the Bangkok airport, without so much as a kopkhun (thank you), travelers are found behind, beside and in front of ticket counters. A pretty Thai face on TV calls flights in English and Thai. Baggage disappears with alarming rapidity and your reporter and spouse despaired of ever being reunited with it. But at the entrance, all the parts came together and there was even a limousine from our hotel, The Oriental. Driving downtown English style, we noted that there were four lanes of traffic occupying the space we would allow for three lanes. Motorcycles and enclosed three-wheel motorcycle taxis were much in evidence, but the occasional water buffalo held up the slow lane. In the city, men wore European-type slacks and shirts but the women were colorful in traditional ankle-length wraparound skirts.

Guard (General Electric Co., Schenectady)— The method of fractional replication discussed by the author has proven very valuable to us in applied research connected with alloy and process development where many of the same experimental difficulties exist. Several of our experiences may be of assistance to those who want to apply the method in these fields. Six or seven years ago the United States Bureau of Mines started development of instruments for the purpose of accurately measuring the vibrational movement of the earth in the vicinity of quarry blasts. For this work a new type of seismometer has been developed. A number of these have been constructed, the accessory field equipment has been assembled, and approximately 200 field tests of actual quarry, blasts have been made. The results of some of these tests have been published 2/ and others are the subject of two manuscripts now in preparation. So far the attention of the investigation has been centered on ascertaining the characteristics and behavior of the ground vibrations. Occasionally, when opportunity arose, measurements of the vibrations occurring in houses or other structures caused by-quarry blasts were made, but without any attempt at direct correlation or interpretation. During 1936 the National Bureau of Standards conducted some experiments to determine the normal vibrations to which the wells and floors of buildings are subject. Cooperation of the Bureau of Mines was requested in measuring the displace-ment. This afforded an opportunity to study the affect of mechanically induced vibrations end make limited comparison with previous records of vibrations from blasting. This paper deals with the experiments made in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and includes some comparisons with effects from quarry shots. The results are in the nature of a progress report only, and are not intended to draw definite conclusions. These tests were concerned with the determination of the maximum amplitudes of vibration possible in the floors and walls of a typical dwelling when subjected to commonly experienced vibrations. The dwelling tested was obtained by the National Bureau of Standards. It was a large four-story stucco building, 41 ft. south of the southerly curb of Park Road, in Washington, D.C., which was constructed about 1900 and was supported on overburden. The basement floor elevation was approximately that of the pavement of Park Road, Park Road runs east and west; the front door of the house faced north.

VARIOUS chapters already written in the history of development of the North Dome of Kettleman Hills are monotonously identical in the one underlying theme of conservation of oil and gas. Discovered on Oct. 4, 1928, by Milham Exploration Co. with its wildcat Elliot No. 1, the field has been subjected to practically every modern form of produc-tion restraint in the name of conservation. The record thus far developed shows that conservation was had for a time, at a price; and that unitiza-tion must he blessed by single ownership or 100 per cent participation to be effective. In fact, incomplete unitization places a heavy handicap upon its participants in the competitive development that follows.

For the technological age in which we live, with the constant goal of further improvement in the efficiency of mechanized systems, the need for a replacement of the antiquated drill and blast method of shaft construction has been recognized. For over a decade now; the trend in shaft construction has been toward large diameter bored shafts using either raise boring methods or more flexible, rodless "down the hole" boring machine. The limits of conventional shaft sinking have been reached, the mining regulations are more stringent, and the environmental agencies more aggressive, all contributing to the growing need for development of the rodless shaft boring machine. In the last three years in the United States, world shaft construction records have been achieved using a V-Mole machine, designed by Mirth GmbH of West Germany, using American electrics and hydraulics. Shafts of 7.0 meters (23 feet) diameter, totaling 2,255 meters (7,400 feet) in depth have been constructed at high advance rates, yet with unusually low accident rates. Bearing in mind the high cost of today's mining labor and the inherent danger associated with conventional shaft sinking, this alternative method of shaft construction achieves a fast, competitive, low manpower requirement, whilst enhancing a safer environment for the labor force. Recent results have proven that program time savings of 50 percent over conventional shaft sinking can be achieved which can be directly translated into improved client cash flow projections and more accurate project budgeting.

Secretary's Note.—Mr. Bramwell was born in 1846, at Liverpool, England, his father being English, and his mother American, of Scotch ancestry. Brought to the United States in early childhood, he was educated at the public schools and graduated from the College of the City of New York. He subsequently studied his profession as a mining engineer at the Royal School of Mines, Berlin, Prussia, and was for a short time in the service of the Prussian government at Konigs hutte. Returning to this country in 1871, he was employed during succeeding years as mining engineer, chemist, and manager at various fnrnaces and iron works in Pennsylvania and the Southern States until, in 1883, he became actively engaged in the development of the Flat-Top coal-field of southwestern Virginia, in which region the town of Bramwell was named after him, in recognition of his services as a pioneer of the great industry which he did so much to promote. After prolonged and fluctuating ill-health, he died, July 13, 1894, at Paris, France. At the opening session of the Bridgeport meeting, the Secretary announced his death, and Mr. Pechin, being called upon, made the remarks reported below.— R. W. R. Widely as Joseph Herbert Bramwell was known, I. think I knew him somewhat better than any one else. After finishing his studies abroad, he came to this country, a very young man, seeking an engagement. This was about the beginning of 1871, as I remem ber, and I was then trying to make iron at Dunbar, at the foot of the Allegheny mountains, in Fayette county, Pa. His engaging manner and charming personnel, combined with his letters of intro duction, made me more than satisfied in securing his services as my chemist. At the outset we lived a sort of pioneer life, and for many months he was practically a member of my family, and the affection then formed remained unbroken to his dying day. I vividly recall the circular of April, 1871, signed by Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell and Martin Coryell suggesting a meeting at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., for the purpose of forming the American Institute of Mining Engineers. At the last moment, prevented from going, I sent Bramwell; and I am more than glad that his name appears among those whose sagacity established an Institute that has become illustrious by reason of its numbers, the character of its members, its invaluable papers and its enormous influence for good

SHERRITT Gordon Co. was formed in 1927 to exploit a copper zinc orebody located in the bush 90 miles north of The Pas, Manitoba. The mine went into production in 1931, operated for a year and a half, and closed because of the low price of copper. Reopened in 1937, it operated continuously until mined out in 1951, producing 8.5 million tons of ore. From 1937 on Sherritt Gordon conducted an energetic prospecting program throughout northern Manitoba, giving particular attention to the belt of favorable greenstone rocks north of the Churchill River. From 1937 to 1941 a number of gold showings were located but nothing of economic value was found.

Graton and Dr. Joseph Murdoch1 presented to the American Institute of Mining Engineers a notable contribution to economic geology under the title The Sulphide Ores of Copper. The value of the work was recognized by mine operators, and Mr. Graton was assisted in his plan to extend his investigations,. by the organization of a commission to undertake a "secondary enrichment investigation." Aluminum-base alloys containing small amounts of copper and magnesium possess but ordinary physical properties as sand cast, but may be treated to give a remarkable range of tensile values and of Brinell hardness. The high-copper (4.5 per cent.) duralumins must be given a protracted treatment which in nature resembles the malleableizing of white cast iron; the low-copper (2.25 per cent.) duralumins develop an excellent combination of strength and ductility with a treatment which requires a maximum of 5 hr. to be completed. THE wrought alloys of aluminum with small amounts of copper and of magnesium have, with the development of the automotive and aircraft industries, sprung into prominence through the medium of duralumin; but the cast alloys remained in the background because their possibilities in the heat-treated condition were either not recognized or not fully investigated. In 1919, the Bureau of Standards published a preliminary survey1 of this field, which pointed out that, in general, the ultimate strength and the percentage of elongation of the alloys of aluminum with and without magnesium could be improved by so simple a treatment as heating to 932° F. (500° C.) for 2 hr., cooling in, air, and aging at room temperature for several days. British investigators, too, working with chill-cast material, found that " considerable improvement in the mechanical properties of copper-aluminum alloys' may be obtained from suitable heat treatment applied to castings."2 Jeffries and Gibson3 made the first contribution to the literature dealing exclusively with the heat treatment of sand-cast aluminum-base alloys, describing the effect of small additions or of combinations of copper, magnesium, and iron on the response to a short heat treatment comprising heating at 932° F. in a

At the turn of the century, 90% of the energy output in the United States was generated by coal, and Pennsylvania was the ranking producer of this fuel. With the huge resources of easily accessible coal found by its early settlers, the Commonwealth was the nation's chief powerhouse for nearly 100 years. In 1928 alone, Pennsylvania mined a billion dollars' worth of coal-or enough to fill a train reaching more than twice around the world at the State's latitude. Coal constituted nearly 67% of the freight of Pennsylvania and was responsible for the State's $4-billion iron and steel industry. Pennsylvania was slow to take up its position as the greatest coal-producing state in the union, but the knowledge of its coal assets was not slow in accumulating. In fact, long before the white man arrived, the Indians were aware that many of the hills were underlain by black stones that would burn. But awareness was not enough. The early Pennsylvania settlers confined themselves to the southeastern corner of the State and had little need or concern for resources further inland.

The effects of minor constituents on the malleability of nickel alloys are described. These effects are related to the atomic diameter, valence, and position on the Periodic Table. The basic methods for removal or neutralization of deleterious elements are then reviewed. Finally, practical methods for melting nickel alloys are described in detail and related to minor constituent control. L HE first malleable nickel was produced by Fleit-man in about 1870 by the addition of manganese and magnesium to the molten metal to counteract the harmful effects of sulfur. Merica and Waltenbergl explained the mechanism by which these elements accomplished the desired result. They showed that sulfur in concentrations in excess of about 0.005 pct produced films of a brittle low melting eutectic of nickel-nickel sulfide which completely surrounded the grains. When manganese was added to molten nickel it reacted with the sulfur to form manganese sulfide which precipitated as widely scattered globules in the grain boundaries. The further addition of small amounts of magnesium converted the sulfur to a very stable sulfide of magnesium which was relatively insoluble in both the liauid and solid states and therefore occurred as finely divided particles within the grains where it had relatively little detrimental effect upon the malleability of nickel or its alloys. The practice of treating nickel with manganese and magnesium came to be called "deoxidation" and was employed without appreciable modification for the commercial production of wrought nickel and high nickel alloys (in this paper—50 pct or more nickel) until about 1930 even though the results were never entirely satisfactory. At that time a more extensive study was made of the effects of minor constituents on malleability and metallurgical quality. The results, small portions of which have been published,2-4 are presented here with other pertinent data. EFFECTS OF MINOR CONSTITUENTS UPON NICKEL Systematic additions were made of 0.5 pct or less of each of most of the elements of the periodic ta- ble. It was established in this study that some minor constituents other than manganese and magnesium were extremely influential. The malleability, as evaluated by the reduction of area in tension tests, depended roughly on temperature as shown in Fig. 1. Four temperature zones are of interest; the cold malleable zone (up to about 1000° F), the red short zone from roughly 1000° to 1500' F, the hot malleable zone around 2000° F and the incipient melting zone. Most of the malleability problems are associated with the red short zone and the discussion will concern this mainly. LUTHER B. EAMES, Pueblo, Colo. (written discussion*).-In reading Mr. North's interesting paper, several points have been noted that appear to warrant discussion. With a feed all through 20 mesh, I feel inclined to question the use of steel balls as large as 2 in. in a tube mill. I have seen balls as small as-3/4 in. used for the dry grinding of cement clinker, and surely many more points of contact would result from smaller balls. This would seem to be desirable in a mill as short as 6 ft. The heavy load in the classifiers would also indicate a high proportion of returned pulp. I hope that some discussion by Mr. North -and others may develop this point. The flow sheet on page 1181 shows the solution returning from the dam valued at 40 c. per ton being added to the last decantation tank. Theoretically, this solution should not be added to that of a lower value. As I calculate it, if this solution were added to tank X the solution finally discharged from tank Z would be reduced in value by nearly 4 c. per ton.

THIS communication describes a series of experiments in which dislocation etch pitting was used to ascertain the depth of damage in crystals which were mechanically polished or which were cut with either a commercial metallographic cut-off wheel,* a com- All specimens were cut from single crystals of American Smelting and Refining Co. 99.999+ pct pure copper which were grown from the melt by the Bridge-man technique. The test specimens were disks, with faces being (111) planes and the disk axis a (111) direction. The disks were annealed in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr for 24 hr at 950°C prior to cutting or polishing and were given a light electropolishing in an ortho-phosphoric acid bath before etch pitting. Both Youngs1 and Livingston's2 reagents were used for etch pitting and the reagents gave identical quantitative results; however Livingston's reagent produced less staining and so all photomicrographs shown are of {111) surfaces etched with this solution. The surface of the annealed crystals showed well-defined subboundaries and a density of dislocations of about 1 X 106 per sq cm excluding those present in subboundaries, Fig. 1. The depth of cold work produced during mechanical polishing was determined after an annealed specimen was mounted in a paraffin holding block to protect it from extraneous damage. The exposed (111) surface was ground on metallographic papers and then polished on billiard cloth through 0.05-p alumina abrasive. It was necessary to remove about 0.3 mm (-0.01 in.) to obtain a structure representative of the annealed sur- face, indicating that the crystal was damaged to this depth during mechanical polishing. The results of the laboratory testing are correlated to actual plant performance and establish design parameters for the heavy media process. THE magnetic powder method, long used. for roughly mapping mag-netic fields, has recently been refined 1,2 for investigating the microscopic variations in the surface magnetization of ferromagnetic crystals. Bitter2 first discovered regular powder patterns connected with the crystal structure of such specimens. Several other investigators3 have used Bitter's original technique, with slight modifications, to study the varia-tion of the patterns with variations in the magnetizing field applied parallel to the surface, and their dependence upon the state of strain, of polish and of crystal cut. All of the explanations of these patterns on metallic ferromagnetics have been couched in general terms. In a preliminary report we have described an improvement in the powder technique which led us to the discovery of a new effect throwing con-siderable light on the magnetic secondary structure of alpha iron4 and of nickels single crystals. We now report additional evidence confirming the existence and stability of a magnetic block secondary structure.
