On July 15, 16, and 17, 1918, through the good offices of Secretary Stoughton, and the courtesy of War Department officials, Columbia Section was able to secure a series of moving pictures which were presented under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association.. The title was "The Way Out," representing the activities of individuals who had lost an arm, a leg, or both, yet whose apparent misfortunes were made the stepping stones to advancement in various human activities. The exhibitions were given at Natatorium Park in the evening, each of the three performances being attended by 1000 per-sons. Later the films were shipped to Kellogg, Idaho, where they were shown in the principal playhouse one evening to a full house. On July 31, 1918, the Columbia Section participated in the luncheon and other entertainment in honor of Alfred D. Flinn, Secretary of the Engineering Council, who made a trip through the country to meet different classes of engineers, members of the National Societies, for whom he had a message. The entertainment was under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, Mr. Peter Mogensen presiding. The luncheon was held in the Elizabethan Room, Davenport Hotel, at noon, 35 engineers being present, of whom about one-third were our members.

WALTER N. CRAFTS,* Toronto, Canada (written discussion?).-During the forging of 9.2-in. shells -for the United States Army, it was noticed that better results were obtained in certain instances when test bars had been held sometime before pulling. An investigation, therefore, was made by our metallographer, Mr. F. M. Arnold, to determine the effect of seasoning. The forging consists of a single operation, piercing a solid cast blank. The test sections were cut from the walls by an oxyacetylene flame, one piece from the nose end and one from the base on the opposite side. The test pieces were not heat treated in any way and the tests and seasonings were carried on at normal atmospheric temperatures. The specifica-tions were as follows: Standard 2-in. test bar, 0.505 in. in diameter; elastic limit, over 19 long tons, or 42,500 lb.; ultimate stress, 39.6 to 49.1 long tons, or 87,500 to 110,000 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, over 13 per cent. As a preliminary test two heats were selected; BP555, which was tested and reported failed on elongation on Aug. 20; and B01771, which was tested and reported failed on Aug. 24. On Aug. 29, retests were cut and machined from the same shells and held till Sept. 3 (5 days) when they were pulled. Both sets of results are given below.

The passing of Benjamin Bowden Lawrence in January, 1921, was a distinct loss to the engineering profession. Mr. Lawrence had a genius for reviving abandoned mines and developing them into substantial producers. A notable example of his work in this line was the Dives-Pelican near Georgetown, Colo. While on an exploring expedition in 1888, he examined this old mine and was convinced that bonanza ore still existed there. He located the owners of the property, and induced them to place sufficient capital at his disposal to enable him to re-open and explore this mine. So confident was he of the outcome that he undertook this work on a profit-sharing basis without salary. Within eighteen months the old Dives-Pelican was operating profitably, and for the following ten years it paid very substantial dividends. The late Theodore N. Vail was one of the owners of this old mine, and many years later, at a dinner given to Mr. Lawrence by the Alumni of Columbia University, Mr. Vail told the story of the resuscitation of the Dives-Pelican by Mr. Lawrence, and declared that the dividends he himself had received provided a large part of the funds that made possible the realization of his dream of establishing the long-distance telephone in this country. The E1 Cobre mines at Santiago de Cuba also owed their renewed life to Mr. Lawrence. Under his management, these mines produced and shipped several million pounds of copper per year. He was for several years consulting engineer for the Kerr Lake and other silver mines in the Cobalt region; the Kerr Lake became famous as a silver producer. Mr. Lawrence spent more than twenty years of his life in the mining camps of the West. He was but twenty-one years of age, and only a few months out of college, when he was appointed manager of the great Chautauqua Lode (a silver mine) located on Glacier Mountain near Montezuma, Colo. Here, isolated in the mountains for several months each year by ice and snow, he worked for five years to make these mines Pay. He possessed unusual breadth of vision and human understanding; he had ''personality plus," and when he opened an office in New York City as consulting engineer he quickly rose to an enviable position in his profession. Young engineers worked with enthusiasm under his guidance. He carefully selected his men, discussed fully with them the plans and policies to be pursued, then left them free to accomplish results in their own way. This attitude developed individuality and resourceful-

At Kobe Steel Ltd., various improvements in pellet quality have been carried out since beginning lime-fluxed pellet production. Especially, dolomite-fluxed pellets, developed in 1975, have superior high temperature properties. With this improvement, successful BF performance has been achieved. But, in order to achieve more successful BF performance, improvements of physical properties such as the shape factor, reposed angle, and the bulk density are desired. Now, crushed pellets have been developed for the improvement of those characters. The test operation with these new pellets in Kakogawa No. 2 BF was carried out with successful results. This report describes the development of crushed pellets and their use in BF.

Geotechnical techniques to evaluate conditions in underground metalliferous mines change through a mine's development from prefeasibility to remnant mining. The objectives of this paper are to determine the geotechnical requirements of typical underground metalliferous mining projects, to determine any shortfalls in conventional geotechnical techniques in satisfying these requirements, and to determine the costs of such investigations in proportion to the project expenditure. Finally, areas for future research and development are discussed. A group of over one hundred case history studies are examined to generate data on typical mining problems. The case studies include projects at most Australian underground metalliferous mining operations supplemented with case studies in Canada, Africa, Asia and Europe.

Six or seven years age the United States Bureau of Nines started development of instruments for the purpose of accurately measuring the vibrational movement of the earth in the vicinity of quarry blasts. V For this work a new type of seismometer has been developod.1/ A number of these have been constructed, the accessory field equipment has been assembled, and approximately 200 field tests of actual quarry blasts have been made. The results of some of these tests have been. published 2/ and others arcs the subject of two manuscripts now in preparation. So far the attention of the investigation has been centered on ascertaining the characteristics and behavior of the ground vibrations. Occasionally, when opportunity Prose, measurements of the vibrations occurring in houses or other structures caused by quarry blasts were made, but without Piny attempt et direct correlation or interpretation. During; 1936 the National Bureau of Standards conducted some experiments to determine the normal vibrations to which the walls and floors of buildings are subject. Cooperation of the Bureau of Mine's was requested in measuring the displace-ment. This afforded an opportunity to study the affect of mechanically induced vibrations end make limited comparison with previous records of vibrations from blasting. This paper duels with the experiments made in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and includes soma comparisons with affects from quarry shots. The results are in the: nature, of , progress report only, and are not intended to draw definite conclusions. Those, tests were concerned with the determination of the maximum amplitudes of vibration possible in the floors and walls of a typical dwelling when subjected to commonly experienced vibrations. The dwelling tested was obtained by the National Bureau of Standards. It was a large four-story stucco building, 41 ft. south off the southerly curb of Park Road, in. Washington, D.C., which was constructed about 1900 and was supported on overburden. The basement floor elevation was approximately that of the pavement of Park Road. Park Road runs east and west; the front door of the house faced north.

THIS subject may be controversial. Personal preferences influence the final selection of cyclones, and side issues such as costs, floor areas, head room, and ease of replacing worn parts all enter the picture, but the following comments and data should apply to most cyclone selection problems. Broadly, the uses for cyclones in wet classification may be divided into three fields: 1) Open circuit operation, for two products, in which feed rate and sizing vary and the products vary. For example, feed may be divided into a sand product and a slime product. 2) Open circuit operation, for two products, in which feed varies, one product to have constant sizing. This calls for adjustment in either the apex or the vortex aperture. 3) Closed circuit operation, the finished product to have constant sizing. Most classification jobs fall in this category.

It has been suggested that it would be a desirable feature in connection with the Chicago meeting of the, Institute in September to arrange for a return trip for the fuel men through the coal fields of Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania, stopping at various points and possibly touching also Kentucky. Perhaps the petroleum men would be interested in a similar trip and might join them stopping off at different points to visit these oil fields. If the members who would-be interested in such a trip will advise the Secretary before the first of June, indicating their desired stopping points, steps will be taken to perfect arrangements accordingly.

The paper shows the steps taken, and the difficulties encountered in accomplishing an increase of 38 pct in tons per drill shift over the method previously used, with probability of more efficient operation to come.

An exploring-drift, on the bottom level of the Curry mine, at Norway, Mich., on the Menominee range, cut a stream of water, which increased considerably the expense of pumping. The hope that the supply would drain off was not realized. It was decided to build a dam in the exploring-drift, as it was estimated that the cost would be recovered by the saving in fuel in less than two months.

A SURVEY of literature reveals the scarcity of experimental evidence relating to work hardening and reannealing of silver.'-'" With the exception of the well-known X-ray investigation of silver and other metals by W. A. Wood? the effect of progressive cold working has not been studied. The determination of thermal stability of silver in the work-hardened state by means of isochronal or isothermal annealing has been confined apparently to very high reductions only. In the survey made, no study was encountered which endeavored to produce a complete picture of the changes in various properties due to cold working and subsequent reannealing. To fill these gaps and to assemble data that could be used for the determination of activation energies and of frequency coefficients of primary recrystallization, a systematic experimental approach, which was developed by one of the authors, has been applied to pure silver. Material and Processing The silver used was Handy and Harman fine silver, with a spectroscopic analysis at the testing stage of Cu, 0.0001 to 0.001 pct; Te, 0.0001; Pb, Si, Ca, Mg, and Mn, traces. The material was supplied in the form of a rod 0.406 in. diam and was converted into test samples according to the procedure condensed in Table I. It should be mentioned that air annealing was adopted to simulate industrial practice, though it was realized that annealing in a neutral gas or in a vacuum would be preferred. The usual precautions have been taken to eliminate any structural changes and property changes resulting from the storage of the samples prior to annealing or testing. Thus the wires were kept at the fully annealed stage, and the final wire drawing, which produced the desired degree of work hardening, was done just prior to the final annealing or testing. During the short waiting period, the samples were kept in a thermosflask filled with ice. Even with these precautions some strain-age-hardening or self-annealing could occur. To test such a possibility, wires of different reductions were prepared in the manner adopted and portions of them were immediately tested. The remaining portions were similiarly tested after different periods of storage, both at room and melting-ice temperature. Within experimental error, all samples obtained from a wire of a given percentage of reduction yielded identical values. This result qualified the material for further tests and interpretations, because it showed that either strain-age-hardening and self-annealing were absent, or that these effects fully balanced each other. The final annealing was carried out in an electric resistance furnace automatically controlled to within a 10°F. It was realized that the temperature fluctuations were greater than desired for this type of work. TO diminish the errors due to fluctuations of temperature, the hot junction of the thermocouple was placed as close to the samples as possible; the time of soaking was reduced to 15 min; and the number of samples annealed at different temperatures was increased. It will be seen from Table I that some tests were performed on the same material at rising temperature. These will be discussed elsewhere. Room temperature testing was limited to the determination of some of the mechanical properties that are known to be additive in a degree sufficient to be used for indirect study of the kinetics of the reannealing process, Tensile tests, carried out on a manually operated J. DURING the course of a lubrication study in relation to the compacting of metal powders, it became desirable to measure the thickness of sprayed graphite coatings on steel dies for hot pressing. The thickness of these lubricant coatings ranged between 0.0001 and 0.002 in. In their particular case, the authors were interested in a method for measuring the lubricant thickness on tapered die inserts having curved surfaces. The lubricant was sprayed on the inserts at an elevated temperature and it was desirable to measure the thickness as soon as possible after application. Various standard types of commercial equipment were tried. Most of the available devices operated on either a mechanical or magnetic principle. Streak brownish black, grayish, olive-green, a little shining. Opaque. Comp. -A uranate of uranyl, lead, usually thorium (or zirconium), often the metals of the lanthanum and yttrium groups; also containing the gases nitrogen, helium and argon, in varying amounts up to 2'6 p. c. Calcium and water (essential?) are present in small quantities; iron also, but only as an impurity. The relation between the bases varies widely and no definite for- mula can be given. Radium was first discovered in this mineral and it has been shown that it and the helium present are products of the breaking down of the uranium.

News has just been received that Flight Commander William T. Hall, a Junior Member of-the Institute, was killed in action on Saturday, May 19, 1917. According to the' Toronto Star, Commander Hall was 24 years of age, a native of Toronto, and a grandson of the late William Kersteman. During the four years of his course in mining at the School of Practical Science, Toronto University, he passed every examination with honors. When war was first declared Commander Hall endeavored to join the artillery as an officer, and for that purpose secured a provisional lieu- tenancy with a Hamilton battery, but he did not receive an overseas appointment, and on being graduated as a mining engineer in 1915, he was offered a position in Chile, which he accepted. He left Toronto on May 27, 1915, and was engaged in Chile as a mining engineer for nearly a year. In the latter part of April, 1916, he decided to offer himself again for service at the front. He crossed the Andes and sailed for Liverpool, where he landed on May 13, 1916. On May 27, 1916, Capt. Hall was given a commission as lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps. He went to the front on Sept. 1, 1916, and remained there continuously. On April 4, 1917, he was promoted from lieutenant to the rank of flight commander. No details of how Commander Hall came by his death have as yet been received.

Pursuant to notice duly given in accordance with law and the constitution, a special business meeting of the members of the Institute was held at the office of the Institute on June 27, 1919, at 8.30 P.M., 1573 members were present in person or by proxy. On resolution duly made and seconded, the change of name to American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incorporated, was authorized and the officers of the corporation were instructed to take the necessary steps to accomplish this result. The votes were 1565 in favor of the resolution and 7 against. It was then moved and seconded that the certificate of incorporation be amended to define the purposes for which the corporation was formed as follows: "To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in the industries by all lawful means, " etc., etc.-the remainder of the article reading the same. The purpose of this change was to allow the Institute to take any legal means it desires to accomplish the objects mentioned above instead of restricting it within narrow limits. The vote was 1573 in favor of the resolution and none against.
