Heap leaching has in recent years been established as an important processing alternative for gold and silver. Currently, heap leaching accounts for about 25% of primary mine produced gold and 10% of primary silver. This paper reviews gold and silver heap leaching practice and surveys major operations in the United States.

TWO very interesting sessions on mine ventilation were held on Monday. George S. Rice, chairman of the Mine Ventilation Committee, presided at the morn-ing session. Formal reports from two subcommittees were presented, as well as two technical papers. Daniel Harrington, for the subcommittee on metal mining, gave a most interesting report, devoting most of it to a review of the literature that had appeared during the past year, to the cooling of mine air, and to a discussion of mine fires. In the absence of Dr. R. R. Sayers, chairman of the Physiological subcommittee, Mr. Harrington gave a resume of that report. The main points covered were in connection with silicosis but some attention was also paid to the associated prob-lems of air cooling and humidity. The paper by Prof. W. S. Weeks on the "Air-Current Regulator" was briefed by Prof. A. C. Callen. Pro-fessor Weeks brought out the fact that the common application of Murgue's equivalent-orifice formula to regulator problems was incorrect, inasmuch as the dis-charge from the regulator was not released into the open air but into a slow-moving current beyond the regulator. He applied the shock-loss theory of Bordoni to the problem and worked out a formula for solving regulator problems, giving coefficients of contraction he had determined experimentally.

THE Institute assembled in the Hall of the Boston Natural History Society on Tuesday evening. Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, of the Boston Institute of Technology, after a brief address of welcome to the Institute, read an introductory paper on the Geognostical History of the Metals. Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment the effluents from these processes require excessively large areas for containment. Experiments conducted in the Bureau of Mines 900-lb-per hr pilot plant at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center indicates that approximately 85% of the water needed to process Michigan nonmagnetic taconite could be reclaimed from the process itself. Water was reclaimed by the controlled addition of lime, sodium carbonate, and synthetic flocculant. As a result, turbidities were reduced to ?1000 ppm equivalent SiO2, while a Ca ion content of ?16 ppm was maintained in the finished effluent. Good-quality flotation concentrates were obtained with reclaimed water and, by means of some indirect comparisons, it can be concluded that the reuse of the water permits a savings of almost 2.0 lb per ton of NaOH, and probably as much as 0.25 lb per ton of fatty acid for total savings of 7.8-10.3 cents per ton of feed. These savings are nearly offset by an estimated chemical cost of 9.3[c] per ton for water treatment.

He also reported the securing of lists of the alumni of the Harvard Engineering Schools, and of the Mining Schools at Houghton, Mich. ; Butte, Mont. ; State College, Pa. ; Seattle, Wash. ; Fayetteville, Ark.; Laramie, Wyo.; Montreal, Canada, and Wor-cester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutes. Arrangements were made to invite all these to join the Institute. It was suggested that a. member' of the Institute resident in Australia be appointed to this Committee, also one from Japan. Attention of the members of the Committee was drawn to the fact that letters requesting, others to join the Institute will be written in the offices of the Institute if desired. Recently the Colorado Engineering Council was formed "to coördinate the work of various technical, scientific, and engineering organizations, promote the welfare and professional standing of their members, and foster a more general recognition of the engineer in civic matters." The membership consists of local associations of members of the national engineering societies and other local engineering, scientific, or technical associations.

The Second Annual Safety First Dinner to the Liberty Bell Mine Crew was held on Apr. 7, 1916, in recognition of the second year without fatal accident and with few serious accidents.
