CHROMIUM, one of the most vital of the strategic metals, has constantly increasing importance as research expands potential uses in alloy steel metallurgy. All signs point to a steadily growing use for chrome ore, and the general subject has received a great deal of attention recently.1 A relatively little known country, Southern Rhodesia produced a total of 5.949 million tons, or 18.6 pct of the total world chrome output, between 1906 and 1950, according to figures from the U. S. Dept. of Commerce. According to U. S. Bureau of Mines figures, Southern Rhodesia produced 291,525 tons in 1950 and 300,267 tons in 1951, or approximately 13 and 11 pct, respectively, of world production for the two years. In 1953 the Rhodesian Vanadium Corp. produced about 85,000 tons of which probably 7,000 tons were concentrate. Production by other companies was high. Large in themselves, the figures assume even greater significance because most of this output is of metallurgical grade.

Exploration in 1955 was marked by a trend toward large-scale programs using a number of geophysical techniques. These programs were initiated both to locate new mineral districts and to bring individual prospects into production. All 14 companies replying to the author's questionnaire include geophysics in the general exploration routine whenever it is applicable, and five companies carry on extensive geophysical programs. Nearly all report that company personnel perform the surveys. In addition to these firms there are the many smaller operators who contract much of their geophysical work. There are indications that the volume of such contracting is sizable.

The literature of milling is replete with papers devoted to the subject of ball milling, all of which no doubt have contributed in one way or another to progress in that art. In this paper reference will be made to only a few of the many authors, but the value of the contributions of all who have written on that subject is hereby acknowledged. With a few exceptions the efforts of most students of the subject have been devoted to laboratory investigations of principles. Davis1 was one of the first to report on plant-scale investigations and to present to mill men certain criteria for the guidance of ball-milling practices. His conclusions with respect to the significance of sizing analyses of classifier sands in their relation to the factors of mill speed and ball sizing are particularly referred to. Those conclusions were: 1. If the balls are large or the speed of the mill is high, crowding will appear at the finer sizes in the classifier sands. 2. If the balls are small or the speed is low, crowding will appear at the coarser sizes in the classifier sands. 3. The indications are that best efficiency is obtained when the screen analysis of the sands show a minimum crowding at any size. The last conclusion was qualified by the statement that it had not been proved conclusively. It is surprising, however, that the litera- ture of later years reveals little evidence that millmen have made any serious attempt to apply those criteria. This may, perhaps, be explained by the fact that the average plant-scale ball-milling problem presents so many variables that an investigation of any one of them encounters the problem of control of the others—a problem that often is unsurmountable in a small plant. In a large plant, in which there is a duplication of grinding units in parallel operation, opportunity may be afforded for determining the value of such criteria. Nevertheless, a study of published data from grinding circuits of both large and small plants suggests that either Davis' criteria have been tried and found inapplicable or have never been given consideration. For the purpose of testing Davis' conclusions and with improvement of ball-milling efficiency as the final objective, a test program was initiated in the concentrator of the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation early in 1938. The practices of that plant have already been described.2 The fine-grinding units are arranged so that any one of eight units may be operated as a test unit and its results compared with those of the remaining units. All units receive similar feed from a common storage bin, in which the product of the fine-crushing plant is bedded by traveling tripper. The ball mills are all similar in size and operated at the same speeds, and are individually metered. The feeder conveyors of each unit are equipped with Merrick weightometers. Under sulfur in coal, is usually understood that form of sulfur which is combined with iron and known as pyrite. It occurs in the form of balls, lenses, nodules, continuous layers, thin sheets, or flakes, both in horizontal planes and vertical cleavage fissures. But pyrites also occur as very fine microscopic particles, or nodules, disseminated through the compact coal. This form has had but very little consideration. Finally, there is sulfur in coal in an amicroscopic form (not visible with an ordinary microscope), probably combined with the organic matter that exists in the coal. This form has had considerable attention from a scientific standpoint, but has probably not been recognized enough on the economic side. One or the other, or both, of these two latter forms may comprise the larger part of the sulfur content of coal, especially after it has been washed or otllerwise prepared for use. Pyrites in Microscopic Particles All coals that have been examined by the author contained a varying amount of sulfur in very small globules, or particles, of pyrite. These particles are seen in a thin [section as roughly rounded opaque dots, Figs. 1 to 10. When isolated, they are generally shown to be approximately spherical in shape, with a rough outer surface. They vary in diameter from a few microns to a hundred microns, the majority messuring from 25 to 40 microns; relatively few exceed the latter diameter. They are, therefore, very small objects. Their size is best appreciated by comparing the illustrations, in which they are shown. at a magnifiea tion of 100 diameters, with some known area like the period used in the ordinary printed page. The period is about 0.6 mm. in diameter, and . when magnified 100 times, will cover a circular area of about 2 1/2 in. in diameter, or all but the corners of the illustrations. The illustrations, therefore, represent an area about as large as an ordinary period, and the pyrite globules form but a small part of the total area. T. M. Drown, South Bethlehem, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper shows in a striking way the high degree of rapidity and ac curacy exhibited by the chemists of our steel-works in ordinary everyday practice. That determinations made in an hour should present only slight differences in the third place of deci male is certainly matter for surprise and congratulation. This remarkable result has been due, perhaps, in part, to a remark able cause. The managers of works, ignorant of all the diffi culties of the laboratory, have demanded "the impossible " of their chemists—and the chemists have done it! Andrew A. Blair, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper is extremely interesting, especially in its bearing on the question of a standard method for the rapid determination of phosphorus in the laboratories of steel-works. Before discussing the re sults in general, I desire to explain the results obtained by me under method A'. This is the method which I have used in the work of the sub-committee on Methods of the Interna tional Steel Standards Committee. It may be described briefly as follows: Solution in nitric acid; oxidation of carbonaceous matter by permanganate; precipitation of phosphoric acid by molybdate solution; reduction of molybdic acid in the reductor, and titra tion by permanganate. This method was used apparently by only three chemists, Dr. Dudley, Mr. Crowell, and myself. In determining phosphorus by this method, among the most essential points to be considered are the ratio of iron to molyb dic acid, or the reducing action of zinc on molybdic acid as compared to its reducing action on iron, and the ratio of molyb dic acid to phosphorus in the ammonium phospho-molybdate obtained by precipitation from the solution of the steel. In regard to the first point, the usually accepted ratio is 1 to 0.90756, or, as it is roughly stated, 0.9076, which is based on the assumed reduction of the molybdic acid to Mo12019,. This

THE resultant embrittlement caused by the exposure of oxygen-bearing copper when hot and exposed to reducing gases has been the subject of many studies.1 Little attention, however, has been given to the possible embrittling effects due to atmospheres or conditions that under some circumstances might be the source of a reducing gas. At rather infrequent intervals there occur reports of copper becoming embrittled during normal annealing cycles in commercial steam-atmos-hered furnaces such as customarily are used for this operation. As might be expected, several other factors exist-such as oil, dirt on the wire, or in the furnace, or metallic surface contacts that might produce reducing gases and be the source of the trouble. However, in consider-ation of the statement made by Ruder,2 it would seem that under some conditions steam itself might prove to be the source of trouble. A consideration of the amount of the dissociation of water vapor up to temperatures of the melting point of copper shows that' the amount of hydrogen that could come from this source is far too minute to account for any embrittlement. What such information does not tell is what will happen at the surface of copper when subjected to steam at elevated temperatures, for entirely different conditions may persist, which would account for Ruder's observation. Furthermore, there are no data as to what might happen at the surfaces of other materials present, the result-ant of which might affect the condition of the copper present. For this reason, it was decided to make a series of experiments com-parable to those previously conducted by the writer,1 which would clarify the effect of the steam on copper, and in copper in the presence of steel.

1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper Smelting,)' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, fee. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu2S, 90.4, and Fee, 9.6 per cent (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and Fee, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples, gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that 5 of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the series ferrous sulphide cuprous sulphide, and to see how the constitution could be further, revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, "The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

The year 1938 was the most active and successful in the history of the oil industry in southern Louisiana. Drilling showed a 16 per cent increase over that of 1937, with a total of 538 wells drilled, which yielded 315 oil wells, 19 distillate wells, 4 gas wells and 200 dry holes. Nineteen new fields were discovered during the year, all but three of which were completed by plugging back to sands previously drilled through. Electrical logging played a large part in these new discoveries as well as in the discovery of new sands during routine development of fields. Fourteen of the new discoveries produced oil, and five produced only gas and distillate. Southern Louisiana continues to lead the world in depth of drilling, which is in part due to the great thickness of comparatively young deltaic sediments near the coast and the existence of numerous sands. The present development is rather evenly distributed over a coastal strip 100 miles wide. New Fields North Tepetate, Acadia Parish.—Atlantic Refining Company's No. 1 Klumpp was completed for a new field through perforations from 7960 to 7970 ft. The initial production was 65 bbl. of 54" gravity distillate and 4 million cubic feet of gas daily through a 1/4-in. choke with tubing pressure of 2850 Ib. and casing pressure of 2930 lb. The well is in see. 12, 7 S., 2 W., just north of Tepetate field. It was drilled to a depth of 8705 ft. and plugged back for its final completion. Atlantic's NO. 2 was completed in a new sand at 8300 ft., also for distillate. South Crowley, Acadia Parish.—Humble Oil and Refining Company's No. 1 Boyd Finch was completed in July 1938, as an oil well through perforations from 7318 to 7325 ft. after plugging from a total depth of 10,222 ft. As predicted, during 1937 South Louisiana witnessed one of the most active drilling campaigns in the history of the area, resulting in the discovery .of 14 new fields. The economic importance of 10,000-ft. production was far-reaching and the objective depths placed on some wildcats was 12,000 feet. Most of the important discoveries and deep tests were in the delta area between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, where the upper Miocene sands were found productive between 10,000 and 11,000 ft. The casing program on these wells usually called for a protection string of 95/8-in. casing at approximately 9500 ft. Drilling barges with the heaviest equipment were used where water transportation was available. The oil production for South Louisiana during 1937 was 62,147,690 bbl., as compared with 51,968,727 bbl. during 1936, an increase of 19.5 per cent. There were 281 oil and gas wells and 172 dry holes completed during 1937 as compared with 262 oil and gas wells and 135 dry holes during the previous period. New Fields Gibson.—The first discovery for the year was in the Gibson area, where Shell Petroleum Corporation's Realty Operators No. 1, sec. 18, 17 S., 15 E., Terrebonne Parish, was completed flowing 780 bbl. of 38° A.P.I. oil daily through a 14/64-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1700 lb. Production is from upper Miocene sand found from 9461 to 9483 feet. Abbevil1e.—The discovery well for the Abbeville field was Continental Oil Company's Hebert No. 1, sec. 20, 12 S., 3 E., Vermilion Parish, completed flowing 50 bbl. of distillate and 2 million cubic feet of gas through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 2550 lb. The well was plugged back from 12,216 ft. in the Chickisawhay, and is producing through perforations from upper Miocene sand found from 7668 to 7682 ft. Later in the year, the same operators completed Brookshire No. 1, sec. 66, 12 S., 3 E., flowing 366 bbl. of 42° A.P.I. oil per day through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1800 lb. Experimental results are presented which indicate that transverse striations in horizontal zone-leveled Bi-Sb alloy crystals are due to irregular growth rate resulting from thermal fluctuations in the melt (Iring gowth. DURING the course of an investigation on the horizontal growth of semimetals,' it was found that crystals of Bi-Sb alloys contained many closely spaced parallel arrays of striations. These striations occurred perpendicular to the growth direction and parallel to the solid-liquid interface. We shall refer to them as transverse striations, or just striations'', to distinguish them from lineage substructures or longitudinal striations which form parallel to the growth direction and have been known to be associated with cellular structures.' Similar transverse striations have been reported previously to occur in other materials prepared by horizontal growth: metals,4 semiconductors,5 as well as their alls. - Various methods of crystal preparation have apparently little effect on the occurrence of the transverse striations. They form whether the crystals were grown by the vertical Czochralski technique, withe1' or without'3- rotation, or by the horizontal zoning methd.- Thus, the transverse striations are not limited to any one class of materials, nor to any particular method of preparation. It is likely, therefore, that all of the observed transverse striations may have some common cause. Previously, workers agreed that periodic changes in the growth rate bring about the striations. However, no agreement exists as to the origin of the growth-rate fluctuations. Some attributed the discontinuous growth to a purely external cause, such as fluctuations in the furnace temperature, jerky motions in the crystal pulling mechanism, or a nonsymmetrical temperature distribution in the melt (in the case of crystals grown by the Czochralski technique with rtation). Others looked for the cause in some fundamental property of the growth process itself. For instance, a certain degree of supercooling is required to initiate growth from the melt. But, with further growth, the degree of supercooling decreases because of the liberation of the heat of solidification at the solid-liquid interface. Thus, crystal growth would be brought to a halt until sufficient supercooling is resotred and the cycle begins again.3'11 According to this model, periodic fluctuations in the melt temperature should exist at the solid-liquid interface. Since the periodic fluctuations in growth rate would result in changes in the segregation coefficient of solute atoms, crystals containing the transverse striations may, in some cases, show a periodic impurity fluctuation along the length, resulting in a degradation of electrical properties. The resistivity striations in doped germanium'9-10 or lnsbB are well-known examples of this microsegregation. The present work was undertaken to explain the exact origin of the transverse striations, and to assess the extent of their effect on chemical homogeneity as well as on electrical properties of Bi-Sb alloy crystals. Results from our previous study of the crystal growth of Bi-Sb alloys1 indicated that the transverse striations may arise from the temperature fluctuations in the melt during growth. This paper will show that the melt temperature fluctuations are indeed responsible for the occurrence of the transverse striations. I) EXPERIMENTAL Although the transverse striations have been observed in all slow-grown Bi-Sb alloys across the entire compositional range, we selected a composition, Big3Sbs, for the present study in view of the extensive data available on the crystal growth of this alloy from a previous study.' High-purity bismuth and antimony, both a 6-nine grade by the manufacturer's emission spectrographic analysis, were used throughout. Independent mass-spectrographic analysis showed, however, that the starting materials were more nearly a 5-nine grade. each containing metallic impurities of approximately 10 ppm atomic. In zone-leveled Big5Sb5 alloys, the total metallic-impurity content was slightly lower, about 7 ppm atomic, indicating that some degree of purification was achieved during the growth. None of the electrically active impurities, such as tin and lead (acceptors) and tellurium and selenium (donors), were present in significant quantity in undoped Bi95Sb5. Typical analysis of the undoped Bi95Sb5 alloy is shown in Table I. Nonmetallic impurities, such as carbon and oxygen, were detected, sometimes as much as 100 ppm, in both the starting materials and the zone-leveled alloys: but the data were only qualitative. Because no rock outcrops exist in the Cuyuna district, it is necessary first to make a magnetic survey with a dip needle, or possibly with a sun-dial compass, and determine the area or belt of magnetic variations and the maximum lines of magnetic attraction. A dip-needle survey is quicker to make, is sufficiently accurate, and will suffice. Regardless of how poorly defined the magnetic attractions may be, it is important that they be determined. Even if drilling has developed ore on an adjoining property, the survey should not be omitted. Iron-bearing formation is indicated by the magnetic attractions, but whether or not ore exists must be determined by drilling. The maximum line of magnetic attraction offers the best place to begin drilling. If no magnetic attraction exists, nearby developments are the only guide; and if these also are lacking, drilling is governed by guess. Test-pitting is not employed in exploratory work because the surface is too deep. Tunneling cannot be used because the topography is not suitable. Exploration shafts are a waste of time and expense, because from every standpoint drilling with churn and diamond drills is the most applicable method for exploratory work. Light drilling equipment only is needed. Rarely have heavier drills been required, for seldom do holes exceed 400 ft. in depth, and about 100 ft. of this is in glacial drift which is easy to penetrate. The deepest hole is 1023 ft. Because of the steep inclination of the strata and the narrowness of the orebodies, many angle holes have been drilled, mostly at 60' to 70" from the horizontal and against the dip of the formation. Angle holes are most advisable. If after initial drilling the beds are of shallow dip, vertical holes or holes of any angle can be used. The total cost of drilling a property is much greater if only vertical holes are used because more holes must be drilled to obtain the requisite information than when angle holes are used. Many tests for variation in angularity of a finished hole have seldom shown more than 2'; therefore, such tests may with safety be abandoned. The extension of metallurgical control of steelmaking processes has always made it desirable to have some quick method for determining the oxygen content of molten steel. To meet the practical demands of the steel industry, this method must also be simple enough so that the sampling can be done by the regular furnace crew. This requirement was kept in mind continually in the work to be described. An oxygen value is required for proper control, whether it be of a rimming steel or of a fully killed steel. However, two factors have discouraged the development of such direct methods: i. The reaction C + FeO Fe + CO is rapid enough to make the correct sampling Of the bath a difficult problem. The most generally accepted means of circumventing this difficulty have been the aluminum-killed bomb test of McCutcheon and Rautiol and the aluminum-killed spoon test of Herty.2 The theory of these tests is that all of the oxygen in the iron is converted to Al2O3, which can then be determined by chemical methods. Even when simplified so that the analysis is made by a measurement of turbidity, this method is too slow to be used in routine control. Furthermore, the results obtained have never been entirely satisfactory, and some of the reasons for this will be discussed later in this paper. z. The ordinary chemical methods of analysis for oxygen in steel are not reliable. The only analysis that seems to possess sufficient dependability to be of value is vacuum fusion,3 and the apparatus and technique developed for this have been too complex and slow for routine work. Indirect Methods Indirect methods of estimating the oxygen have been resorted to in mill practice. Generally these depend upon the chemical equilibria involved. The oxygen in the bath is related to other components in the slag or metal that can be analyzed the readily. These methods have many difficulties in common. Steelmaking processes involve a complicated set of interrelated reactions, all of which tend to approach equilibrium at varying rates. The degree to which any particular equilibrium is approached is not well established. Moreover, a proper use of theoretical equilibrium constants requires a more extensive knowledge of the activities of the con- than we now have. This is well illustrated by the irregularities observed when trying to determine the oxygen in the metal by its ratio to the iron oxide in the slag. Equiliblium relations may be used mole readily if they are evaluated by plant experience, but the extent of approach to equilibrium remains an undetermined variable and lack of an entirely satisfactory mean, of determining oxygen for the calibration is felt keenly, For example, the statistical analysis of the relation between carbon and oxygen4.6 illustrates that even iia a single plant wide variations exist under llormal conditions of operation. Secondary recovery projects often are not started in oil reservoirs until dictated by rising GOR's or declining oil production. Such circumstances require a well dispersed injection pattern to prevent the oil bank from bypassing the production wells. Many times this purpose is served by using the five-spot or line-drive patterns, in which half of the wells are made injection wells. A regular injection pattern is proposed that is based on the same well spacing as the five-spot but in which only a third of the wells need be converted to injection wells. Fluid flow model studies on this proposed pattern show that production histories will be as good as those for a five-spot pattern at mobility ratios of three and above. The model data are presented in a form that may be used to predict recoveries from both homogeneous and stratified formations. Introduction The injection of fluid into a petroleum reservoir usually is prompted by an actual, or predicted, loss in the productivity of the reservoir. Often, an oil reservoir is produced by pressure depletion until high GOR's dictate a change in policy. Fluid injection also causes increased ultimate recovery, but this usually is of less importance to the operator than is the maintenance of the production rate. It is a fact that the ultimate recovery in any particular fluid injection project is relatively independent of the number and spacing of the injection wells as long as the reservoir voidage through the production wells is balanced by the total injection rate. However, the response of a production well is directly affected by the distance it lies from an injection well. In places where the well productivities are declining, the injection wells should be spaced as evenly as possible among the producing wells ("dispersed" injection pattern). More particularly, if the production response depends upon the formation (and subsequent production) of an oil bank, each production well should be surrounded by injection wells. Otherwise, the oil productivity will increase very little as the oil bank moves past the well.'.' An evenly spaced injection pattern has the best chance of generating an oil kick in the production wells. If reservoir voidage and injection rates are to be equal, the ratio of injection wells to production wells must be equal to the ratio of the average injectivity to the average productivity (in reservoir volumes). This ratio is in strumental in choosing the injection pattern. Table 1 shows the production well to injection well ratio for the dispersed injection patterns that have been described in the literature.'-' All of these patterns will have comparable recoveries and response times (for the same basic distance between wells). The choice of pattern there fore depends upon the relative injectivity and productivity of the wells and upon the type of drilling pattern employed. Another important factor may be the ability of the proposed production wells to make up the lost productivity from those wells converted to injectors. These factors become more pronounced at the higher oil viscosities (low gravity oils). All other things being equal, the probable ratio of single well injectivity to single well productivity will be equal to the water-oil mobility ratio of the proposed flood. Thus, high mobility ratios (due to low gravity oil) should call for fewer injection wells — as long as these injection wells are "dispersed" to obtain more even pro duction response for the remaining wells. Secondary re covery projects in oil reservoirs seldom, if ever, will have mobility ratios requiring more injection wells than production wells. Thus, only the last five of the patterns listed in Table 1 will be of significant interest in oil recovery. The strong temperature dependence of the flow stress of bcc metals has prompted considerable interest and controversy concerning the rate-controlling influence of the Peierls' mechanism upon deformation in metals.18"21 Dorn and Rajnak" recently offered a criterion for Peierls' deformation utilizing a line-energy model of a dislocation to estimate the saddle-point activation energy, for the nucleation of a pair of kinks as a function of applied stress and the height and shape of the peierls9- barrier. It was found that Un/2Uk, where 2Uk is the excess energy of a kink pair, was a unique function of where is the effective stress and 7p is the Peierls' stress as defined in Fig. 20. D. C. Ralston—The fact that none of the organizations that have worked on these ammoniacal leaching processes have contributed discussion of Mr. Caron's papers today is a matter of some disappointment. Adaptations, modifications and improvements have been made by several organizations or individuals and to complete the record I want to document a number of them. The Nicaro Nickel Co. operated a Government owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, during the past war. A report on the project was written for Reconstruction Finance Corp. and is in the document file collected by the Office of Technical Services, Commerce Department and filed with the Library of Congress, where it can be consulted or bibliofilm or photostat copies obtained by asking for copies of PB 97271. Nicaro Nickel Co. has obtained a series of U.S. Patents, my list (probably incomplete) of which bears the following numbers: 2,400,098; 2,400,114; 2,400,115; 2,400,461; 2,400,612; 2,458,902 and 2,473,795. International Nickel Co. has also studied the problem and U.S. Patent 2,478,942 shows that some of the complications involving occasional low extractions have been unraveled. Forward, Samis, and Kudryk, of the University of British Columbia, have also published a study of copper-nickel sulphide concentrate.' Others are interested and it is evident that this type of hydrometallurgy is likely to find a happy application in the not-too-far distant future. Caron's two papers practically amount to a summation of his life's work on the important subject of nickeliferous iron ores and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is fortunate to have been chosen the medium of publication. M. Rey—The ammonia leaching process has been the subject of certain studies in New Caledonia, but at the present time, the conditions are not very favorable to its adoption. The process is a combination of a thermal and a hydrometallurgical process. As a result, the first costs and the operative costs are rather high. To counteract this unfavorable situation, it would be necessary to make a very high extraction. But unfortunately, the process is delicate and in spite of all of Caron's valuable work, there are still many unknown factors. It is difficult to obtain regularly a high extraction, exceeding 75 to 80 pct. It would be interesting to have the opinion of Inter-national Nickel on the process and to know what the Dutch are doing in Celebes. M. H. Caron (author's reply)—I am quite familiar with the different types of nickel and cobalt ores as found on New Caledonia, and it may be pointed out that the Celebes ores are quite the same in their properties. Their behavior when treating the ores by the ammonia-leaching process is also alike and in my opinion, there is no reason why a high extraction of the New Caledonian ores could not be obtained if the process is properly applied. For the sake of completeness I may add that one of my patents has not been discussed in the papers. This patent deals particularly with the treatment of serpentine nickel ores.
