The good work of the surveys supported by the different branches of the government needs little mention to geologists but is underappreciated by people at large. Geologists and engineers realize their usefulness and yet even from this group one hears occasionally an undercurrent of discontent about their work or the distribution of it. The very fact that discontent arises within and without this group and has drawn attention of legislative bodies of the country in the present time of stress means that a large number of people do not receive or do not realize that they receive benefit from these public works. This seems to be a clear indication that more than the relations between government surveys and the mining industry is involved and that if the mining industry is interested in continuation of the work of these surveys on the past scale they must consider the other survey divisions and their activity. Also, relations between government surveys and certain specialized types of mining have not been as close as they should be. I have been employed in almost the entire range of fields offered to geologists and have studied closely the feeling of people towards geological service. Recently it has been a pleasure to be closely associated with men who were as deeply interested in civic welfare and affairs of state as in the financial success of a large industry developing natural resources. Previously I had seen service in a national survey, a state survey, summer employment by a large mining company exploring new property and detailed geological work for a large corporation. Major responsibility as a college instructor has left me free to view each of these assignments in unprejudiced fashion and at the same time study the relation of government surveys to large natural resource industries, average industrial and construction work and service to nongeologists and laymen. LEACHING of mined-out areas at the Arizona property of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., was started on Jan. 20, 1.937, and by July 1, 1938, 10,000,000 lb. of copper had been produced by this method. Leaching operations at present are confined to the western portion of the ore body and over an area of approximately ten acres. The ore in this area was extremely high in pyrite and the copper content, which averaged slightly in excess of 1 per cent, was the result of incomplete secondary enrichment by solutions which apparently worked laterally from the main ore body. Above the ore was an unaltered zone of primary or protore averaging 125 ft. in thickness and containing approximately 0.6 per cent copper. Above this was the capping or leached zone averaging 50 ft. thick.

The phases occurring in the V-Mn system were studied by means of X-yay diffraction and metallo-paphic techniques, using are-melted alloy specimens annealed in the temperature range 800° to 1150°C and quenched. The bcc solid solution extends at 1250°C all the way from vanadium to 6-manganese. Below 1050°C the a-phase is formed, and the terminal a-manganese phase is stabilized up to about 900°C by vanadium in solid solution. IN the only previous general survey of the V-Mn system Cornelius, Bungardt and Schiedtl reported the existence of three intermediate phases corresponding to the approximate compositions VMn,, VMn, and V5Mn. The phase VMn8 has recently been identified as a o phase2 but the alloy VMn was found to have a bcc structure2 corresponding apparently to the vanadium solid solution rather than to the large cubic unit cell reported by Cornelius et al. 1 Subsequent work by Rostoker and Yamamoto3 has shown that the vanadium-base bcc solid solution extends to at least 15 pct Mn at 900°C. An alloy corresponding to the composition VMn, was examined by Elliott,4 who reported that the as-cast sample as well as samples annealed at 1200o and 1300°C had bcc structures, but that annealing at 1000°, 800") and 600°C produced two phases. One of these phases was apparently the bcc solid solution and the other resembled the o phase structure. Hellawell and Hume-Rothery5 established the phase relationships in manganese-rich alloys above 1000°C, and showed that the o phase in this system is replaced by the 6 Mn (bcc) solid solution at temperatures above 1050°C. These results suggest that a continuous bcc solid solution may exist above 1050°C between vanadium and 6 Mn. The present investigation was undertaken in order to develop more complete information in regard to this system. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys used in the present work were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese having a minimum purity of 99.9 pct and vanadium lumps with a purity of 99.7 pct. The major impurities present in these metals were carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen and this would account for the small percentage of nonmetallic inclusions observed metal-lographically. The arc-melting was at first performed under a helium atmosphere and it was necessary to keep the melting times as short as possible in order to minimize the loss of manganese by vaporization. It was later found that the evaporation of manganese was considerably reduced when the melting was done under argon atmosphere. The final composition of each alloy was calculated by assuming that the total weight loss during melting was due to evaporation of manganese. Compositions which were calculated in this manner agreed reasonably well with the results of chemical analysis, as shown in Table I. Spectrographic analysis revealed the presence of contamination by tungsten, but in no case was the percentage of tungsten greater then 0.4 at. pct. The specimens were in each case broken in half and the fractured section was examined visually and microscopically for evidence of inhomogeneity. Each specimen was homogenized at temperatures near l100°C, as shown in Table I. After this treatment most specimens consisted of large columnar grains of the bcc vanadium solid solution. The etchant used in most of the metallographic work consisted of 20 pct nitric acid, 20 pct hydro-flouric acid, and 60 pct glycerine. It was found that this etchant would clearly delineate the phases present in these alloys although it does not produce any striking contrast between the phases. For certain manganese-rich alloys, a 1 pct aqueous solution of nitric acid was used. This etchant gave a brown color to the a-manganese phase, whereas the o phase was virtually unattacked and appeared very light as shown in Fig. 1. The etchants used by Cornelius et a1.l were found to produce spurious effects in some of these alloys. In particular, the vanadium-rich alloys etched in hot sulfuric acid often appeared to consist of two phases when both X-ray diffraction and etching with the glycerine-acid mixture indicated the presence of single phase bcc solid solution. A few percent of what appears to be an oxide or nitride phase was found at the grain boundaries and in the interior of the grains, especially in the vanadium-rich alloys. All alloys were annealed in sealed silica tubes containing 1 atm of pure argon and these tubes were then quenched in cold water. Although some manganese loss occurred during annealing, the loss seemed to be confined to the surface of the speci-

THE Tri-State district, as outlined in this paper, refers to the entire mineralized area in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma (Fig. 1). The part of the district in Missouri and near Galena, Kans., is still sometimes referred to as the Joplin district (Fig. 2). The Picher-Miami area is that part of the Tri-State district located contiguously in Kansas and Oklahoma in the vicinity of Baxter Springs, Picher and Miami. This paper is confined almost wholly to the ore deposits of the Tri-State district and particularly to the Picher-Miami area. Our study of the ore deposits of this district dates from late in 1925 (by Fowler) and early in 1927 (by Lyden) to the present. Our work has been confined almost entirely to the search for ore for numerous companies and individuals. It was not possible for us to undertake numerous highly interesting investigations which presented themselves but which would not immediately help in finding ore. We particularly refer to the general structural geology of the Ozark uplift, the genesis of the ore, and other problems of a similar nature. The local and general structural problems of the district are being solved gradually as the work progresses. The factors that control the loci of the several orebodies are evident. This paper is based almost exclusively upon our own observations. Most of the important mines in the Picher-Miami area were studied in detail. A map (Fig. 5) is included which shows this area and the properties we have examined to date. When it was convenient we visited, studied and compared structural relations in numerous mines in states outside the district. Some of these observations are noted in this paper.

It has long been known that in melting high-chromium steels, some of the carbon might be oxidized out of the melt without excessive simultaneous oxidation of chromium, and that higher temperatures favor retention of chromium. The advent of oxygen injection as a tool for rapid decarburization of a steel bath permits significantly higher bath temperatures, and it was quickly recognized that the use of oxygen injection facilitated the oxidation of carbon to low levels in the presence of relatively high residual chromium contents. Up to the present time, however, specific data pertaining to the chro-mium-carbon-temperature relations in chromium steel refining have not been available. Individual steelmakers have evolved practices more or less empirically, but there has been very little real basis for predicting how effective any given practice can be in permitting maximum oxidation of carbon with minimum loss of chromium. The current investigation, therefore, was undertaken in an effort to establish the fundamental carbon-chromium relationship in molten iron under oxidizing conditions. As reported below, the equilibrium constant and the influence of temperature on that constant have been derived for the iron-chromium-carbon-oxygen reaction in the range of chromium steel compositions with what appears to be a fair degree of precision. The practical application of the result will be obvious. Experimental Procedure The laboratory investigation was carried out on chromium steel heats melted in a magnesia crucible in a 100-lb capacity induction furnace at the Union Carbide and Carbon Re- search Laboratories. The charges for the heats consisted of Armco iron, low-carbon chromium metal, and high-carbon chromium metal, the relative proportions of which were calculated so that the various heats would contain from approximately 0.06 pct carbon and 8 pct chromium to 0.40 pct carbon and 30 pct chromium at melt-down. When the charges were melted, the bath temperatures were raised to the desired level, and the heats were then decarburized by successive injections of oxygen at the slag-metal interface through a ½-in. diam silica tube at a pressure of 30 psi. The duration of the oxygen injections was from 30 sec to 2 min. at intervals of approximately 5 to 30 min. It did not appear that length or frequency of the injection periods had any significant effect on the results; cansequently, no effort was made to hold them constant and they were controlled only as was expedient to the general working of the heats. Between successive injections, the heats were sampled by means of a copper suction-tube sampler that yields a sound, rapidly-solidified sample representative of the composition of the molten metal at the temperature of sampling. This sampling device is a modification of the one described by Taylor and Chipman.1 An attempt was made to vary bath temperatures between samples, but it quickly became evident that, unless the variations were small or unless the new temperature was maintained for a minimum of 15 min. during which an injection of oxygen was made in order to accelerate the reactions, a very wide departure from equilibrium resulted. For most of the runs, therefore, temperature was maintained relatively constant at approximately 1750 or 1820°C. A few reliable observations at other temperatures, however, were obtained. Temperature Measurement The high temperatures involved in this investigation were measured by the radiation method, utilizing a Ray-O-Tube focused on the closed end of a refractory tube immersed in the metal bath. The immersion tubes employed were high-purity alumina tubes specially prepared by the Tona-wanda Laboratory of The Linde Air Products Co. These tubes were quite sturdy under reasonable mechanical stress at high temperature. They were unusually resistant to thermal shock, and chemical attack on them by the melts was slow. With care, it was found possible to keep these tubes continuously immersed in a heat for as long as 5 hr at temperatures up to 1850°C, before failure by fluxing occurred. The Ray-O-Tube—alumina tube assemblage was similar to those supplied commercially for lower temperature applications. In operation, the alumina tube was slowly immersed in the molten metal to a depth of approximately 5 in., and the device was then clamped solidly to a supporting jig where it remained for the duration of the run. A photograph of the equipment, in operation with Ray-O-Tube in place and oxygen injection in progress, is shown in Fig 1. When in position in a heat, the instrument was calibrated by means of an immersion thermocouple and an optical pyrometer. For calibration through the range of temperatures from 1500 to 1650°C, a platinum -platinum + 10 pct rhodium thermocouple in a silica tube was immersed alongside the alumina tube. This paper, under the title of "The Genesis of Auriferous Lodes from a Chemical Point of View, Illustrated by Analyses of Samples Taken from the Chief Auriferous Area of New Zealand, Victoria and Queensland, by John R. Don, D.Sc., M.A., Lecturer on Geology in the University of Otago, N. Z.," was submitted by the author with the frank confession that its length, covering several hundred printed pages of the Transactions of the Institute, would preclude its acceptance for publication in full. But the great value of the original work which it records rendered its rejection on that ground highly undesirable ; and, after correspondence with Dr. Don, it was agreed that the Secretary should condense the paper, subject to the author's approval, omitting what was not essentially connected with the original work reported. In the discharge of this laborious and difficult duty, the Secretary's chief trouble has been his regret to cut out the acute criticisms and admirable theoretical and historical summaries of Dr. Don on the general subject of the science of ore-deposits. It should be added, that the original paper has been returned to the author, with full permission to publish it through any other medium (due mention being made of the first publication by the Institute of portions thereof), and a cordial expression of the hope that the treatise, as a whole, may be thus published, to the advantage of science. The Secretary begs to add, that many of the portions necessarily omitted from this condensed version would constitute, in his judgment, interesting and valuable separate contributions. In attempting to condense this paper, it was necessary at the outset to cut out the tint three chapters, of which the following brief outline is therefore given. Chapter I., introductory in character, indicates the importance of chemical analysis in the investigation of the genesis of ore-deposits, emphasizing the value of Prof. Posepny's Institute paper, and especially of the discussion which it aroused, and stating in general terms the theories of "lateral secretion" and "ascension." Chapter 11. describes the scope of the investigation undertaken by the author, the chief purpose of which was to determine which of the above-named theories was favored by the evidence obtained. This evidence consists chiefly (though not wholly) of analyses of the country-rock taken at various distances from the auriferous "reefs," (a) on deep mine-levels; (b) in the surface or "vadose" region : and also (c) of underlying, neighboring or connected crystallines (granite, gneiss, etc.). In addition to these investigations, there is a separate inquiry into the question of the deposition of gold in marine basins, suggested by the fact that most of the gold in the lodes of Australasia occurs in stratified deposits. Chapter 111. discusses the principles and methods followed by the author in the examination of country-rock for the purpose described. After giving his reasons for believing that careful tests of carefully-chosen samples of country-rock taken at varying distances from the ore-deposit might throw light upon the question

Tlze green electroluminescence occurring at liquid-nitvogen temperature in epitaxial gallium phosphide diodes is exarnined using the donor dopants silicon and sulfur. Zinc is used as the p-type diffusant. Two tt~ain peaks are found, namely til 0.56 and 0.535 p. The intensity of the gYeen peak occurring at 0.56 is found to oary as -4"' wlzere Jf is the forward current density and to first order appears to be dependent on the concet~tvation of ionized donovs. Tile vadintive lifetinze fov this process is -10-'sec. ThE development of high-purity, large single crystals of epitaxially grown gallium phosphide is the ultimate aim of the studies to be reported. While a number of papers and reviews' have been presented on properties of gallium phosphide grown from gallium solution and from the melt, less attention has been paid to the properties of epitaxial gallium phosphide grown from the vapor. In the studies to be reported we have examined the effects of shallow donor impurities, primarily silicon and sulfur, at liquid-nitrogen temperature, on both the electrical and green electroluminescent properties of carefully characterized single-crystal epitaxial Gap. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Material Preparation and Properties. The samules used in this investigation were single-crystal n-type epitaxial gallium phosphide. he single crystals were synthesized from the elements by vapor transport and epitaxial deposition on single-crystal gallium arsenide substrates. Typical transport agents used were chlorides. The growth procedures are described in more detail in Ref. 2. The samples were grown in the (111) orientation and had thicknesses up to 480 . Following the growth, the GaAs substrate was removed from the epitaxial Gap by etching in nitric acid. The Hall effect and resistivity of these n-type samples were measured as a function of temperature and analyzed for impurity content and compared with spectroscopic emission analysis. The results are given in greater detail in Ref. 3 but a summary is noted in Table I. In Table I, AED denotes the donor ionization energy, Nd is the donor impurity concentration, lvA is the acceptor impurity concentration, NI is the total impurity concentration, Rip vs temperature is the measured Hall mobility-temperature relationship from liquid nitrogen to about 400"K, n(77"K) is the measured carrier concentration at liquid nitrogen, and R/p(77'~) is the measured Hall mobility at liquid nitrogen. Good agreement is noted between electrical and emission analysis for the major donor impurity, silicon, in the two materials where it is a major constituent. In the case of the two samples SC90-6 and AP138-3(111) B which were sulfur-doped the ionization energy found from the electrical data is in good agreement with that reported for sulfur.4 The acceptor impurities are not known, although from the presence of magnesium in the samples as indicated by emission analysis and its known role as an acceptor in GaP,4 magnesium could be present as an acceptor. Similarly, since silicon is known to be an amphoteric impurity4 it may also be present as an acceptor in the Gap.* The *A small band has been noted at 0.625 11 in samples SC90-6, SC76-4, and SC77-4, suggesting according to Ref. 5 that sillcon could be present as an acceptor In these samples since these authors have found this peak to represent a donor-silicon emission. presence of calcium deduced from emission analysis is not correlatable with the electrical analysis and its presence as an electrically active impurity should be questioned. B) Sample Preparation and Diode Fabrication. The original slices were of the order of 2 sq cm in area witi the (111)B face up. The material was cleaved and sectioned and the best pieces selected (i.e., those which visually appeared to have the least strain and defects). The samples were polished, lightly etched, and cleaned in trichloroethylene. Zinc was diffused in a closed tube at 800°C to form a p-n junction. Diodes were made from these samples. The depth of junction varied, but did not exceed 10 p depth. The back side of the slice was lapped back and a low-resistance n-type contact was formed (at 600°C in forming gas) to an Au-Mo tab with a hole in the middle for

The increase in internal energy as the result of deformation has been measured for lead, aluminum, silver, nickel, iron, and zirconium by using rapid, adiabatic compression. The stored energy increase is roughly Proportional to the strain; the propor-tionality constant increases rapidly with increasing melting point. The fraction of the mechanical energy which is stored increases more slowly, since the strength of the metals also increases with melting point. The values of the stored energy are considered accurate to about 10 pet. The present values appear about 50 pet larger than the more reliable published results where comparisons are possible. It is possible that this difference is due to the high strain rate used in this investigation. Immediately after deformation all these metals release energy at a rate roughly proportional to (time)-'. This release is considered to be associated with dislocation motion but in aluminum (and copper) some additional process seems to be present. This release can represent 20 pet or more of the stored energy. WHEN pure metals are plastically deformed, most of the mechanical energy is converted into heat. The energy remaining within the metal is significant in that it is the energy of the disorder produced and thus detailed knowledge of this energy is a powerful tool in understanding the nature of deformational disorder. While much effort has been expended on this problem, the amount of information available is limited. The situation as of 1958 has been carefully reviewed by Titchener and ever.' The present results have been obtained by a new experimental approach to this problem. The method necessitates high-strain rates which make comparisons with published results less certain, but a high-strain rate is an advantage in that the energy release immediately after deformation can be followed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the experimental method used, the internal (stored) energy is given as the difference between the mechanical work used in deforming the sample and the heat which is released (the first law of thermodynamics). The work is supplied by two identical hammers swinging freely from a fixed height, the available energy being the product of the mass, the gravitational constant, and the distance through which the center of gravity moves. The initial temperature rise of the sample represents the heat produced by the deformation. The sample temperature is determined by a small thermocouple embedded in and supporting the sample. This process can be repeated over and over to produce increased strains. Most samples are run through about five cycles to a total strain of around 0.7. Further details are covered elsewhere. The determination of the heat is dependent upon the sample weight, its specific heat, the rise in temperature, and any gains or losses to the surroundings. One is dependent on published results for specific heals (the values were taken from a collection).3 The values must be accurate to about 0.1 pet in order that they not affect the results. The best values thus do not contribute to the uncertainty, but this is probably not always the case. The accuracy of the temperature rise is limited primarily by knowledge of the thermocouple characteristics over short temperature intervals, but careful calibration eliminates this as an important factor. One can calculate readily the heat flow between the sample and hammers if the time of contact and the sample temperature are known and if there were no oil at the interface. Assuming the maximum temperature difference, upper values for this interchange have been calculated (the time of contact is determined from the decrease in sample length) and it may or may not be significant. However, no correction is colnsidered necessary because of the presence of a thin oil film which has a thermal conductivity much less than the metals. Except for the possible uncertainty in specific heat, the heat is considered to be adequately known. The mechitnical losses which are recognized as important are: 1) friction between the sample and the hammer:;, 2) the kinetic energy in the hammer suspension system which may not be entirely usable, 3) the rebound energy of the hammers, and 4) the vibration of the hammer heads. All these have been covered in detail elsewhere2 and only the more significant points are made here. The friction turns out to be small except for soft materials (lead)

The oil business has been relatively quiet in Wyoming during 1934. Only 34 producing wells were completed, 54 dry holes were drilled, and at the end of the year only 30 wells are listed as drilling. Wyoming still has a large reserve of production shut in, mostly in black oil or asphaltic base fields in the northwestern part of the state. The total oil production increased from 11,171,500 bbl. in 1933 to 12,539,470 in 1934, but light oil production continued to decline, and the increase was made by black oil fields. This is partly due to natural decline of light oil fields, especially Salt Creek, Big Muddy and Lost Soldier, but largely because of increased demands for road oil. The Rocky Mountain states spent much money to build and improve roads and a greater amount of road oil was used. The refining of black oil to manufacture road oil produced gasoline as a byproduct that slightly decreased the demand for light oil. The Oregon Basin and Frannie fields, in the Big Horn Basin, moved into second and third places in the list of producing fields in Wyoming because of their increased black oil production, and Big Muddy and Lost Soldier, light oil fields, dropped back. Wyoming stayed close to its allowed production, which was based on the needs of the refiners and purchasers. This activity in black oil resulted in a few more wells in the fields of the Big Horn Basin, but the greatest amount of drilling was in the shallow Osage field in eastern Wyoming. Osage supplies many little topping plants and at the close of 1934 there was not enough oil available there to supply all of them. In the Lost Soldier field and Salt Creek, one major company was rather active in a campaign to deepen, clean out and repair old wells to increase production, and the figures of that work are not included here. Of the light oil fields, Lance Creek promises to be most active during 1935, since the two wells in the recently discovered Sundance sand pool are producing and more wells will he drilled. With wildcatting almost at a standstill, two new oil fields were discovered in Wyoming in 1934. The unusual interest taken in the papers on steel at the New York (1922) meeting showed that the time is ripe for the renewal of the general discussion of the physics of steel, on the same lines that wete used formerly and produced such good and lasting results. The curves shown in Figs. 1 to 4 and the appendix were added to my paper1 after the February meeting, but, unfortunately, Figs. 1 and 3 were transposed; the curves on page 252 are for bessemer steel and belong on page 254; while those on page 254 are for open-hearth steel and belong on page 252. These errors are evident at once on referring to the data in Tables 1 and 2, pages 227 and 228. The curves for each 0.05 per cent. of carbon and manganese in basic open-hearth steel are given in Figs. 1 and 2; these lines for the lower carbons and manganese are comparatively uniform. Figs. 3 and 4 give similar lines for carbon and manganese in bessemer steel. The large break in the carbon lines from 0.55 per cent. to 0.60 per cent. is caused by much higher silicon in the steels of 0.60 per cent, carbon and over that are used for springs, etc. The estimated ultimate strength of pure iron, and the increase in strength by carbon, phosphorus, and manganese, with the different views regarding the same, were given and diseussed. All of this can be considered as an introduction to the practical use that is now being made of such data in selecting the heats of steel best suited to give the required physical tests called for in the finished rolled material. The chemical composition of the steel, of course, tells only a part of the story, as many other factors that have an influence on the physical properties of the steel must be considered, and controlled as far as is possible. Some of these have already been referred to, but there are other important ones to be considered and discussed.

The Societâ Anonima di Miniere e di Alti Fòrni, familiarly known as the " Elba Company," works the rich ore-deposits of the Island of Elba under a long-term contract with the Italian Government. The ore-deposits are scattered over the eastern and southeastern coast; but as these parts of the island are not well provided with ports, the blast-furnaces were built at Porto-ferraio, the principal town of the island, situated on the northern shore, and possessing a magnificent natural harbor where vessels even as large as the battleships of the Italian navy can comfortably anchor. In the selection of Portoferraio the cost of transporting the iron-ore from the different mines to the blast-furnaces has been reduced to a minimum, and shelter has been provided for the company's flotilla of tugs and barges, as well as for the steamers carrjing coal and pig-iron. The whole plant, of which a general view is given in Fig. 1, comprises: 1. A discharging-pier with unloading-cranes. The ore and coal are transported from this pier by means of an aerial cable-railway to the coal- and ore-storage yards. This cable-railway is supported by an iron bridge extending from the pier to the shore and by a wooden trestle extending from the shore to the yards. 2. Blast-furnaces, two in number, with all the accessory apparatus, such as blowing-engines, dry purifiers, Cowper hot-blast stoves, hoists, etc. 3. Coke-ovens, two batteries, with coal-bin, crushers and boilers. 4. Engine-house containing the blast-engines and the electric generating-station. 5. Pumping-plant. 6. Narrow-gauge railways.

THE appearance of the Wilfley table in 1897 marked an epoch in the art of concentration of ores. The table has merited and received an almost unprecedented measure of public approval, lasting through its whole patent life. It has been very little improved in itself, or improved upon by competitors. The new machines bidding for popular favor have been of the Wilfley family, but without ability to do markedly better work than the parent m:-chine, or to (to more work except by the use of superimposed decks, the latter having obvious disadvantages. During the past three years there has been developed at Morenci a new type or arrangement of riffles applicable to the Wilfley type of concentrating table which corrects many of the objectionable features or limitations of the older system and obviates most of the difficulties encountered with it, particularly when handling ores having a low ratio of concentration. The new type is known as the Butchart1 riffle system, and its general arrangement is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

That calcium will activate quartz for flotation with anionic collectors such as soaps has been known for a number of years,12'3 and the method has been applied to the concentration of various iron ores4 5 6 as well as to other materials. Clemmer gives the permissible pH range for the activation of quartz by calcium as between 9.5 and 12.5 with an optimum value of 11.0, and Hertzog7 has determined the calcium abstraction of iron ores and of Ottawa sand, but otherwise little quantitative data are available. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine those conditions under which dilute solutions of calcium chloride will activate quartz for anionic flotation and to determine the amount of calcium ion adsorbed by quartz. Those variables, the influence of which was primary, such as calcium, sodium, and hydrogen ion concentrations, were studied. Other factors which influenced the results are discussed in the description of the experiments. Three different experimental methods were used to determine the activation of the quartz. The first method was to treat a sample of ground, deslimed quartz with solutions of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide, and to determine the calcium adsorbed by chemical analysis of the solution. Advantages are that a direct value for the amount of calcium adsorbed is obtained, and introduction of a collector which may affect the adsorption is avoided. The difficulty is to determine the extremely small differences in the calcium concentrations before and after the abstraction. The second method was to determine the activation of the quartz by observing the contact angle obtained on pressing an air bubble against the polished surface of a piece of quartz immersed in a solution of calcium chloride, sodium hydroxide, and sodium oleate. This is the well-known "contact angle" method. The third method was to determine those conditions under which an air bubble will pick up quartz particles immersed in a solution of the desired reagents. Disadvantages common to the sec- ond and third methods are that introduction of a collector is necessary to obtain bubble contact with the mineral; very small quantities of contaminant can give erroneous results; and no information is obtainable concerning the amount of calcium adsorbed. Advantages are that tedious analyses, which at best give approximate results, are avoided, and the conditions, especially for the third method, closely simulate those of actual flotation. Although the most consistent results were obtained with the third method, this paper describes the techniques used and the results obtained from each of the three methods. Distilled water and analytical grade reagents were used throughout except where otherwise stated. Between tests all glass articles were cleaned with a chromic-sulphuric acid mixture and sodium hydroxide. Abstraction Method The raw material for the tests was Ottawa sand sized between 14 and 28 mesh. Batches of 500 g of this sand were dry ground for 1 hr in an Abbe porcelain mill with 2700 g of quartz pebbles. The batches were split down to samples weighing approximately 30 g, and the weight of each sample was adjusted to exactly this value.

DURING the last three or four years I have had occasion to examine, chemically, various samples of matter commonly called flue-dust or cinder, found deposited in the flues and hot-blast chambers and under the boilers of blast furnaces, and also in the flues and under the boilers of puddling and boiling furnaces. Recently several of these examinations were made quite in detail, and as the results reveal, I believe, information of no inconsiderable importance, I am induced to communicate them to this Institute. A sample of deposit obtained from the flues of one of the blast furnaces at the works of the Phoenix Iron Company, at Phoenixville, Pa., was found to have the composition given in Column I of the following table

[ ] ST. JOSEPH Lead Co., is entering the oil business. Andrew Fletcher, St. Joseph president, stated that plans call for a contract with the Continental Oil Co., to drill 11 exploratory wells. Six will be in Texas, one in southern Louisiana, one in northern Louisiana, and one each in California, Oklahoma, and Montana. St. Joseph is also negotiating a contract with the Zephyr Drilling Co., for wells in Wyoming and Colorado. St. Joseph is planning to drill another well on a 6000 acre plot in southern Illinois. Proxies issued before a special meeting of the board, said the new venture is not intended to change the general character of the company's business, or to involve a significant part of its resources. If gas, oil, or minerals are discovered in paying quantities, the company will develop and operate the deposits and dispose of the products for the joint account of Continental Oil and St. Joseph Lead. The mining company will contribute a proportionate share of the cost, but will have definite limitation of its obligation. The amendment to St. Joseph's certificate of corporation, passed by the board meeting, also extended the power of the company to include mining operations of all kinds.

THIS subject is one that has attracted my attention for a good many years. All of us have had occa-sion to think of the waste that comes from the poor organization of our methods of finding mines and of looking after prospects. Probably all of us, in, examination work, have made a long and difficult journey to see some prospect, in a far country, or often in the mountains, have found the prospect one that never could be developed, and have learned for the first time that it had been previously examined by from two to six of our professional associates, who, each in turn, condemned the property as worthless. I know properties, as all of you do, that have been repeatedly examined by first-class engineers. Perhaps it would not be safe or wise to have an invariable rule that, each prospect should be entitled to only one examination by one engineer; and yet, it seems to me that somewhere there is a middle ground to take; it is hardly necessary that each little prospect should be examined so many times that the walls get greasy from the climbing of mining engineers, or the stopes get filled up with cigarette stumps. 'This mining engineering profession ought to have brains enough to find some way of making this unnecessary, and of making the benefit of an examination, in some cases at least, and in a much larger number of cases than at present, avail-able to the industry as a whole. If we would save the amount of money that is spent unnecessarily on reexamination of properties, and let that money flow into the actual development of )properties, I believe that, in the long run, we would be better off. Just how to do that is another problem. In 1916, while in London, Edgar Rickard and I attempted to do something of that kind. We started to organize a plan whereby mining engineers might, with the consent of their class, turn over to a central organization their reports on properties they had examined, whereby men who had occasion to look up these same properties might, on payment of a fee (which should go back to the original client, if you desire, or might be devoted to some other purpose for the benefit of the industry), have access to these earlier reports. We found, in the short time we considered this matter, that a good many British engineers, and a good many of the companies, were willing to consider this. In other words, they were willing to pool their information, as a matter of practical experience. We all know the enormous value of pooling information. I think it is a problem that may well be considered from the point of view of the industry as a whole, which the Society might attempt' to work out on a businesslike basis. Assuming, however, that it is possible to work out a plan whereby we get the minimum number of examina-tions that are necessary and we make some saving in money, we reach another stage-the problem of the examination itself.
