A further evaluation of the bomb-sampling method for determining the oxygen content of liquid steel is presented. The results of this study and their close agreement with the results of an earlier evaluation confirm the conclusion that the bomb-sampling method is valid for obtaining representative samples for the determination of the oxygen content of a liquid steel bath. WHAT constitutes the most desirable procedure for obtaining a sample suitable for determining the oxygen content of a liquid steel bath has been a controversial subject for several years. In 1952 Huff, Bailey, and Richards' described a modification of the bomb-sampling technique originated by McCutcheon and Rautio.' In both the modified and original techniques, a small cast-iron or steel mold containing aluminum wire and appropriately covered is inserted into the furnace, coated with slag, and then plunged into the metal bath. Upon entering the metal, the cover melts and a sample of the steel bath enters the mold. The data presented by Huff, Bailey, and Richards' indicated that reproducible samples could be obtained by their method. Furthermore, the oxygen analyses from samples obtained by their method agreed better with those from controlled laboratory experiments than did analyses from samples obtained by methods previously suggested for sampling large liquid-metal baths. Most techniques, other than bomb-sampling, require that a sample of liquid steel be removed from the furnace in a well slagged spoon and poured into an iron mold containing aluminum or into a massive copper mold for rapid chilling. Pouring in this manner requires that the sample pass through the air. The controversy, then, is somewhat as follows: Proponents of the spoon-sampling method and similar dip-and-pour methods feel that the introduction of a cold steel mold into a molten steel bath may result in a localized boiling condition that may deplete the steel of oxygen to a significant degree in the area where the bomb is introduced. Conceivably this boil could cause results that are, on the average, too low and nonrepresentative of the bath composition. On the other hand, samples that are spooned and then poured through the air may also be nonrepresentative because of oxidation by the atmosphere. The restrictions imposed in sampling with a spoon are much more stringent than those imposed when sampling with the bomb-type mold within the furnace. The spoon sample must be taken in a well slagged spoon, a requirement that depends on the condition of the slag in the furnace. This study is an investigation on using hydrogen peroxide for tank-leaching of uranium with sulfuric acid. The optimum sulfuric acid concentration was found to be 0.03 mole 11 -'for a 25% pulp density suspension. The order of reaction with respect to sulfuric acid concentration was found to be ns0.75. The best results vith hydrogen peroxide were obtained at a 4.64 molar ratio of 6202 to U in the ore. The order of reaction was found to be zero with respect to hydrogen peroxide concentration. The theoretical maximum rate effect of Hz02 on uranium extraction was derived as Vm = 8.15 x mole &-'min-'. The highest rate experimentally attained was 8.09 x mole kL'min-'. It was found that the uranium extrac- tion was not affected by the pulp density up to the 50% used in this study. However, the final yieldswere significantly higher (over 90%) for leaches carried out in the presence of Hz02 than (less than 90%) for leaches carried out in the absence of H202. The reaction was found to follow a first order course with respect to substrate concentration (pulp density) regardless of the presence of H202. The effect of temperature was more explicit at moderate tempetatures (30 to 55 C) than at lower (10 C) or at higher (70 C) temperatures. At this latter temperature an almost complete extraction was realized even without H202. The apparent activation energies were found to be AEa = 2.68 kJ mole-' in the absence of H202, 0.5 kJ mole-'with Hz02 at 40 C to 70 C. and 4.72 kJ mole-' with Hz02 at 10 C to 40 C. All these activation energy values suggested that the uranium extraction process is diffusion controlled regardless of the presence of H202. Further, the change in activation energy in the presence of Hz02 indicates the possibility of change in the reaction mechanisms at lower and higher temperatures.

THE completion of the excavation of the tunnels through Bergen Hill for the extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad into New York City, together with the fact that the excavation for the rest of the tunnel-line has been practically completed for some time past, arouses sufficient interest to justify a description of the engineering- and contracting-work, and the organization by which it has been accomplished. The finishing of the excavation is a long step towards the completion of the entire tunnel-project. It will be interesting to the members of the Institute, who last spring were taken through a great part of this work, to know that by the excavation now completed it is possible to walk by tunnel from a, point near Sunnyside yard, Long Island, east of the 34th Street ferry, to the central passenger station site in the City of New York, and thence by tunnel to the Hackensack meadows, and by an embankment constructed across these meadows to Newark, N. J. This New York tunnel extension is being constructed as a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system by the Pennsylvania Tunnel & Terminal R. R. Co., a corporation of the States of New Jersey and New York. It extends from a point near Newark, N. J., to the Sunnyside yard, Long Island, as indicated on the accompanying plan.

There were no important changes in the producing situation in Colombia in 1930, because the emergency bill passed by the Colombian Congress in 1927 is still in effect, and therefore no change has taken place in the law governing petroleum. At the close of 1930 the Colombian Congress began to consider a new petroleum bill. This measure is an improvement on the preceding bills which had been the subject of so much debate in the Congress. However, it cannot by any means be regarded as perfect, and a number of criticisms may be justly leveled at it. The most substantial one probably is that the royalties on public lands, and the taxes on private lands, while apparently low, are deliverable at seaboard, or payable based on seaboard price at the option of the government. If the government exercises its option to take the oil at the mouth of the well, the cost of the transportation figured back into oil is also deliverable to the government. This phase of the law has the effect of making seemingly low royalties a burden on the operator. The fact that taxes on private properties are deliverable in kind is also an unusual provision for which there is no good precedent. The pipe line provisions are also noteworthy, and the government has authority to fix rates and also to deny permits to construct pipe lines for reasons affecting national economy. There are also clauses enforcing unit operation on both public and private lands, and collecting a tax of 1 c. per 1000 ft. of gas wasted. It remains to be seen whether this bill will be enacted, or whether it will be substantially modified. This much may be said, however, that unless it is modified, it will defeat its own purpose; i. e., promotion of petroleum development in Colombia. Company Activities The South American Gulf Oil Co. shut down its operations during the year, and now employs only watchmen at its camps, Las Monas and El Tigre. It is perhaps a little difficult for Americans fully to appreciate the slow progress in the search for oil in Australia. Conditions are so different from those in the United States that methods must also differ considerably. Australia possesses an area almost exactly equal to that of the United States, but has a population of less than 7,000,000, and this population is concentrated almost entirely around the eastern and southern coasts of the continent. There are, therefore, vast "empty spaces" entirely unpopulated or exceedingly sparsely populated. The emptiness is due not to any lack of energy or initiative on the part of Australians but to the arid and waterless character of much of the country's interior. Throughout the greater part of the area that is comparable with the Mississippi drainage area of the United States, there is not a single flowing stream, and over most of it the rainfall is less than 7 in. a year. This hinders exploration and geological survey, and also isolates from potential markets many of the regions that otherwise might be considered worth prospecting. Also, Australia consists of six independent and sovereign states. With the establishment in 1901 of the Commonwealth of Australia, the states retained complete control of lands and mineral rights. Each state has its own petroleum legislation, and the absence of a central controlling authority has tended to confusion and to the introduction of many complications in oil prospecting. There are three major "territories," administered by the Federal Government; namely, the Northern Territory, enclosed between the northern parts of Queensland and Western Australia, within Australia itself, and the Territories of Papua and New Guinea in the island of New Guinea. Land and mineral legislation in these territories is not uniform. Furthermore, during the late twenties there occurred an orgy of company flotation and indiscriminate drilling, wQch resulted in the discovery of some definite indications of oil in three of the states and two of the territories, but which failed to develop any producing oil field in the common acceptation of the term. THE Christy Creek clay mine of the General Refractories Co., in the Olive Hill District, ranks with the most important producers in the north-eastern Kentucky fire clay field, both from production of high-grade flint clay, as well as unusual extent and thickness of deposit. The property is but one of a number controlled by the General Refractories Co. in this district, but is given first consideration among them by the operating staff. Its total area is over 5000 acres, owned in fee or by lease of clay mining rights, and although mining operations have been in progress for over five years, scarcely one per cent of the ground has been worked as yet. The mine is near the southwestern end of the clay field, which extends in a belt 12 miles wide and 55 miles long, in a southwestern direction from Kenova, W. Va., which, as the name indicates, is at the junction of Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. Olive Hill, where there is one of the l1Ulin plants of the General Refractories Co., and to which the clay from the mine is shipped, is about 26 miles distant from the mine. Connection is made with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R. by a spur line . 8 miles in length, owned and operated by the company.

Oil and gas development in Mississippi during the year 1933 was rather active and a number of important wildcat wells were drilled throughout the state. Mississippi showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 58 completions from 22 counties during this period, compared with 53 completions in 10 counties during 1932. The Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties continued to be the most active area with 26 completions, resulting in 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells, and 7 dry holes, compared with 38 gas wells, 1 oil well and 5 dry holes during 1932. A further attempt to extend the producing limits of the Amory gas field resulted in a dry hole. Extensive exploration in south Mississippi has proved the existence of ample source beds and presence of an extensive sandbody near the top of Cockfield. Core tests, supplemented by extensive geophysical work, have been carried on in Jackson, George, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties. Exploration will be continued in 1934. The most important deep test drilled in 1933, and the deepest well ever drilled in a southeastern state, was the Eastman Gardner et al., Bank of Seminary No. 1, sec. 26-8N.-15W., Covington County. This well went through about 1300 ft. of Selma chalk, and was abandoned in the Eutaw at 8004 ft. Another interesting operation during the past year was the Foster Creek Oil Corporation's Foster Creek Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 14-2N.-2W., in the "Eastern Conroe Trend." This test is shut down at 3687 ft. in the Catahoula sandstone and has not encountered any important shows of oil or gas. A total of 107 of the 117 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field since its discovery in 1930 are still producing, and have a combined open flow of approximately 3,724,896,000 cu. ft. It is reasonable to assume that this area will be rather inactive during 1934 as the maximum daily production during 1933 was 3,476,000 cu. ft. The 10 wells that have gone dead were edge wells. The water level is now between the sub-sea depths of 2190 and 2195 ft. The Gulf Refining Company's Rainey No. 1, sec. 13-5N.-lE., one of the early wells in the field, had gas and water at —2225 ft. Although data on the exact tonnage of recoverable coal silt are not known, the quantity produced in 1943 was estimated to be over five million tons for the anthracite region of Pennsylvania alone. Since that time the recovery of the No. 5 buckwheat size previously included in silt estimates has increased greatly thus reducing the total silt tonnage. As a compensating factor, however, the methods of recovering silt previously escaping into the rivers and streams have been markedly improved so that the net figure may not have changed materially. Comparable estimates for bituminous coal are lacking, but undoubtedly the silt represents a significant tonnage. With the trend toward increased wet cleaning of the smaller sizes of bituminous coal, it is to be expected that even greater quantities of silt will be available in the future. The raw silt from anthracite collieries usually contains a high mineral matter content, but technological developments in fine coal cleaning have been making rapid advances and it appears probable that more extensive use of these methods will be employed in the near future. Bituminous coal silt in many instances contains a similar high mineral matter content. As with anthracite silt, however, the cleaning of this material, where necessary, appears both technologically and economically feasible. With a view to upgrading the size and value of silt, considerable laboratory and pilot plant work has been conducted by a number of organizations on what is commonly known as pelletization. Actually the process is one of extrusion in which the moist silt is extruded from a die in the form of rods, which usually break into relatively short lengths—a few inches long—as they fall from the die. Fig I is a photograph of some extruded 3/8-in. diam pellets and of the anthracite silt from which they were produced This technique of producing larger sized material from fines is by no means new, having been used extensively by the industrial carbon and clay industries for years.' The application of the process to coal silt appears, however, to be relatively new. The first major program of investigation dates back only to July 1945, when a group of engineers representing the Anthracite Institute, The Pennsylvania State College and the J. F. Pritchard and Co. conducted preliminary tests on the extrusion of anthracite silt at the Floridin Co. plant at Warren, Pa. Since that time these three organiza-tions—individually, together, and in cooperation with other interested groups— have actively pursued work on various phases of the problem. Much of the early history and details of the laboratory and pilot plant work by the Anthracite Institute, has been reported by Mulcey and Eckerd.2 It is the purpose of this paper to report additional information on the process, especially with respect to the factors influencing the quality and use properties of the product, and the current develop-

IN connection with the question of coal waste and economy in mining, we would call the attention of those interested to an apparatus invented by M. Dernencourt, Superintendent of the Anzin Division of the Anzin Coal Company, North of France. This apparatus is known in France and Belgium under the name of prop screw jack (vis botte), and has been used with good results in the above-named countries for some years past. M. Ponson gives, in his " Traité de l'exploitation des Mines," a description of it (page 533), but as the description given is old, the work not widely known in this country, and as some valuable improvements have been made since, I thought it might be useful to give a description of it, having seen it in operation in 1867, while in Europe to attend the great Exposition, and on a scientific tour to the mining districts of France, Germany, Belgium, and Italy. The prop screw jack is composed of the following pieces: I. The body or column B, Fig. 4 [Plate (1)], of oak or yellow pine, sawed square, the bark taken off, and any length, proportionate to the vein. The smallest are 10 inches diameter at the base, and 9 inches at the top, the height being from 12 to 15 inches less than the size of the vein. In the axis of this column, and at the top end, is a cylindrical opening or hole, C, 2 3/4 inches diameter, 10 inches deep, for the screw, S. II. Two wrought-iron rings, R R, to strengthen the two extremities of the column ; the rings must be put on hot. III. A cast-iron washer, E, with hole in centre a little larger than the screw, to be put on the top of the column, and on which the nut is to rest; the top side of this washer must be faced on the lathe, also the bottom of the nut, to prevent friction. THE farmer pays the phosphate miner! Phosphorus is used in fireworks; goes to battle in military smoke screens, incendiary shells, and tracer bullets; and, in vermin destroying pastes, does its part in the war against insects. A lemon phosphate can be had for a nickel at most soda fountains, and tens of thousands of tons of phosphate rock are mined annually for use in the food industries, chiefly for making monocaleium phosphate baking powder. Sodium phosphate cleaning, washing, and scouring compounds consume substantial quantities: the iron and steel industries buy a few thousand tons yearly to make ferrophosphorus and to balance foundry-iron furnace charges; and even nonferrous metallurgists use a little for phosphor bronze and other alloys. Phosphoric acid, its salts, and diverse other derivatives of this versatile element have countless applications, and industrial outlets are increasing rapidly, especially in the United States. Nevertheless, in this country nearly 90 per cent and in the whole world fully 95 per cent of the phosphate rock consumed is absorbed ultimately in agriculture.

TWO overfeed drum-type separators using a suspension of magnetite in water as the separating medium have been installed in the Champion NO. 1 preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., Division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Company. A simplified flow diagram of the Champion No. 1 coarse coal circuit is shown in Fig. 1. A railroad car rotary dump, capable of handling 20 cars per hr, discharges the coal into a hopper. Coal is fed from the hopper of the rotary dump to a 60-in. belt conveyor by two reciprocating pan-type feeders. The belt conveyor feeds the run of mine coal onto the main raw coal screen. The first deck is fitted with 3 in. round hole perforated plate which removes the 3x0-in. coal. The second deck of the screen is equipped with 6-in. lip screens which separate the remaining coal into +6 in. and 6x3 in. The +6 in. coal is transferred to a shaking picking table and then discharged onto the loading boom. The 6x3-in. coal is fed to the No. 2 dense medium vessel for cleaning. The clean coal from this unit flows to a vibrating screen where the medium is removed and the coal sized into 6x4 in. and 4x3 in. The 6x4-in. coal is transferred to the loading booms and the 4x3-in. is conveyed to the clean coal classifying screens to remove degradation. The 3x0-in. raw coal is blended in a system composed of three storage bins having a total capacity of 400 tons. From these bins the coal is fed onto a 48-in. flight conveyor by three reciprocating feeders. This flight conveyor delivers the coal to the Rheo plant. The 3x0-in. coal is then cleaned in two 48-in. Rheolaveur launders each equipped with two Rheo boxes. The first set of boxes removes a primary refuse and the second set produces a middling product which is recirculated in the launders. The cleaned coal and water overflows from the primary launders to two sizing and dewatering shaker screens where the water and — -in. coal are removed for further cleaning in the Rheo fine coal plant. The 3x3h-in. clean coal is combined with the 4x3-in. coal from the No. 2 vessel, sized into 4x2 in., 2x1 34 in., and 1'/4x in., then sent to the loading booms. The 3x0-in. refuse from the primary launders is normally fed to the No. 1 dense medium circuit, but any portion or all of this material can, as an alternate, be processed in the Rheo rewash launder. The primary refuse when fed to the dense medium circuit is screened into YSXO which is cleaned in the fine coal plant and 3x for cleaning in the No. 1 vessel. The clean coal from this vessel is passed over a vibrating drainage and rinse screen, then sluiced to the rewash sizing shaker where it is dewatered and sized for loading. These regulations usually require the distribution of an acceptable prospectus which provides essential background information about the issuer, the project and the share offering. when the public offering has been accepted, the unlisted company may then seek a listing of its shares for trading on a Stock Exchange. Once listed, the company will be subject to rules of the Stock Exchange. This paper will deal with the specific information required for inclusion into a prospectus being submitted for a resource company and particularly those parts of concern to mining engineers and geologists.

ASHBEL WELCH, LAMBERTVILLE, N. J.: Dr. Dudley has given the wear of steel rails under four different conditions. He arrives at the conclusion that the softer rails, or those that from their composition ought to be softer, wear better than the harder. But there is another condition which has an important bearing on the subject, and, should not be overlooked,-the weight on a wheel. With the lighter weights of the past, the softer rails may have worn best; with the heavier weights of the future, the harder may wear best. Weights will probably be increased up to the capacity of steel to bear; then doubtless the harder steel will wear best. A leaden rail with ten pounds on a wheel might carry millions of tons, but with one hundred pounds on a wheel, it would be destroyed by a few thousand tons. So in the days of iron rails, my experience was that the softer rails under light machinery stood better than some of the harder; but under heavy machinery the softer were much the most rapidly destroyed. His doubtless the same with steel. Cadmium-coppeR precipitate, a byproduct of the purification stage of the zinc plant, is composed mainly of zinc, cadmium and copper in varying amounts depending on the efficiency of precipitation and the cadmium and copper contents of the impure solution treated. The composition range is approximately: cadmium 10-12 pct, copper 6-8 pct, and zinc 3&35 pct. As received at the cadmium plant, the precipitate is a dark gray to black press cake produced by filter pressing the flocculent cadmium-copper precipitate formed when impure zinc solution is agitated with zinc dust. The details of the cadmium-copper precipitation are to be found in the paper "Electrolytic Zinc at Risdon, Tasmania," by W. C. Snow. Transactions AIME, 121, 501. The treatment, in addition to recovering cadmium as metal, yields a copper product as a residue for realization and recovers in solution for return to the zinc plant, the excess of zinc dust used during purification. The recovery of cadmium metal is approximately 200 tons† per year, but, with the amount of copper residue recovered, varies with the zinc production tonnage, composition of the original concentrates, degree of roasting and other operational factors. The operations involved in the recovery of the foregoing materials are carried out in a building adjacent to the purification section of the zinc plant and can best be described by dividing the process into the following stages: 1. Oxidation and Grinding of the cadmium-copper precipitate. 2. Leaching and Filtering. 3. Precipitation of cadmium. 4. Oxidation and Grinding of the precipitated cadmium. 5. Leaching oxidized cadmium precipitate and Purification of leach solution. 6. Electrolysis. 7. Melting, Casting and Packing. A feature of the process is the use of two distinct solution circuits. Spent electrolyte from the zinc plant circuit containing about 10 pct sulphuric acid is used as the primary solvent of the cadmium and zinc present in the oxidized precipitate. When the cadmium is later separated by precipitation and filtering, the filtrate, originally zinc plant spent electrolyte and now fortified in zinc, is returned to the zinc plant. The precipitated cadmium, after oxidation, is redissolved in spent electrolyte from cadmium electrolysis which solution is in closed circuit within the cadmium plant except for discards to the zinc plant circuit as mentioned in Section 5 hereinafter. (Fig 1.) Details of the various operations follow. I. Oxidation and Grinding of the Cadminm-copper Precipitate The precipitate having had a preliminary drying by compressed air in Dehne filter presses in the zinc plant is trucked to a storage platform of sufiicient length to store 3 to 4 days' production separately. After 48 hr exposure to atmosphere, oxidation is sufficient to enable all cadmium and zinc but only a portion of the copper to be dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid. A technical evaluation of actual performance of the preparation facilities at Beaver Consolidated Coal Co.'s Stinson plant is presented, with special emphasis on sulfur reduction in 1-1/2 x 3/8 in., 3/8 in. x 28 mesh, and 28 mesh x 0 size fractions. Evaluation of the heavy medium section of the plant and the treatment of the 28 mesh x 0 coal is included. Design criteria considered for sizing and selection of equipment required to process 1-3/4 million tpy of raw coal on coals of divergent washability characteristics are summarized.

The property of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co., covering the Juneau gold belt for over a mile in length, consists of 136 claims and 24 mill sites; these are near Juneau, Alaska, in what is known as the Harris mining district. Gold was discovered in the district in 1880, by Richard T. Harris and Joseph Juneau, who had been prompted to explore the section by rumors they had heard among the Indians. Gold was first found on the beach at the mouth of Gold Creek and further search revealed the lode deposits in the Silver Bow basin, about two miles inland. The lode locations made immediately thereafter constitute the principal area of the Alaska Juneau group of claims. Gradually news of the strike spread and, during the late eighties, Silver Bow basin became a substantial producer of gold, both from placer work and from quartz milling. Numerous small mills of various types were erected to crush high-grade float and stringers gouged to shallow depths. Placer mining gradually ceased and the pioneer milling operations gave way to larger and better mills, which in time were the predecessors of the two large mills built by the Alaska Gastineau Co. and the Alaska Juneau Co. on the shores of Gastineau Channel. This evolution from arrastres to small mechanical mills, thence to the two large-capacity mills on Gastineau Channel, although a natural sequence of events, had a most important bearing on the development of the district. Knowledge of the character, extent, and value of the ore deposits gained by these early operations could not have been acquired otherwise. Spencer shows1 that the early mills were: Arrastres in 1881-82-83-84-85-86-88; a 5-stamp mill in 1882; a "newly devised grinding mill" in 1884; two Huntington mills in 1886; a 10-stamp mill in 1889; a revolving Dodge mill in 1890; a 5-stamp mill in 1891; and a 20-stamp mill in 1893. He also estimates the gold production to the end of 1893 as $1,000,000 from lode mining and $1,250,000 from placer mining. No estimate can
