METALLURGISTS are properly interested in papers dealing with subjects ranging from the theories of the metallic state to very practical details on the use of metals. A review of theoretical metallurgy naturally excludes papers concerned with the usefulness of metals and limits itself to those concerned purely with the science of metals. Even in this more limited field the reviewer is confronted with thousands of papers dealing with facts and theories of metallic behavior, from which he can select only a few hundred. The selection is necessarily highly arbitrary. Certain classes of papers definitely fall within the scope of this review. Thus, papers on the deformation of metals, on the structure of alloys, on recrystallization, to select only a few, are fully represented. Other subjects, which verge on what is generally accepted as the science of metals, such as the magnetic properties of metals, the less familiar electrical properties and theories, adsorption of gases by metal surfaces, and the like, are treated scantily. Particular attention is given to reviews of subjects that fall with in the groups chosen; in a summary such as this, which is largely in the nature of a progress report, capably written reviews are of importance, particularly since the monograph and text book literature is so meager in this field.

(written discussion?).- I embrace ace the opportunity to take part in a discussion of Mr. Woodruff's paper because a successful discerning of what actually constitutes pet-roliferous areas from the geologists' standpoint is worthy of our endeavors, not only from the intellectual side, but also because it may lead, as Mr. Woodruff hopes, to the more certain establishment of principles that can be applied to other continents in exploiting them for petroleum. This discussion will also embrace the results of two other recent papers, one by Alexander W. McCoy and one by Maurice G. Mehl.1 Sources of Petroleum.-Mr. Woodruff is agreed that petroleum comes from plants and animals, or possibly from both, and that it has ac-cumulated by migration into reservoir rocks. These reservoir rocks must of course be porous to become catch basins for the oil and gas, and then, too, their present structures are variable, as they occur in anticlines, domes, terraces, etc. , The structures, he states, are more widespread than are the oil pools, and the same is true for the reservoir rocks. CRITICAL analyses of the work expended in producing oil by the utilization of gas energy have appeared in the publications of Shaw,1 Pierce and Lewis,2 and Herold,3 authors who have ably discussed the factors which must be taken into consideration in comparing energy consumed per barrel in various wells which are flowed by means of gas-lift. However, two distinct phases of oil production are concerned with the ratio of gas energy consumed to oil produced. One of these phases is the gas-lift, which utilizes the differential gas pressures for the purpose of flowing oil, whether these pressures be natural reservoir pressures or be induced by artificial compression of gas or air. The other phase has to do with prorating oil production in pools which are operated either as units, or are subject to such restrictions as those imposed at Oklahoma City by the Corporation Commission, or, by similar controlling groups in other fields. An abundance of literature is available relative to the problems of flowing wells by gas-lift, but the first suggestion that the energy of the gas within the oil and gas pool might serve as a basis for proration, appeared in the timely article by McWilliams.4 Much of the. dissatisfaction with proration in certain fields is because some operators feel that besides the hazard to the wells which accompanies the test, the method of allocating production on the basis of the "potential" gage is inequitable and gives some operators a distinct advantage over others.5 The most severe penalty may be exacted from the most progressive operators or those who attempt to produce their oil with a minimum quantity of reservoir gas. .NONE of the methods now in use for the transportation of materials underground is entirely free from more or less serious objection. The great flexibility, ease, of control and economy of operation of electric tramming are accompanied by the serious menace of a trolley-wire distributing system. As the gasoline locomotive has even greater flexibility of application and requires no similar dangerous distributing system, it might be considered a safety device which would make possible the elimination of the dangerous trolley system were it not possessed of other objectionable qualities peculiar to itself. It is found that the exhaust gases from the engine may be injurious to the health of those breathing the air in which the locomotive has been operating. While electric shock may kill the individual who makes contact with uninsulated parts, the gasoline engine may be detrimental to the health of all those who have to work within the atmosphere corrupted by exhaust gases. The degree of pollution meas-ures the magnitude of the menace. This may be negligible at times, but with careless operation it becomes serious. The exhaust gases from an engine are composed of, nitrogen, a little free oxygen, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, the last two being considered dangerous. The presence of carbon dioxide as a product of combustion of the gasoline was recognized as an objection from the beginning of the use of these machines, but attention was called to the fact that the amount produced was relatively small as compared to that from other sources of this gas, and it was not likely to be made in dangerous quantities. The effect of carbon dioxide, except in relatively large percentages, is confined to the effect it may have in reducing the oxygen content of the air that is breathed.

It is desired to call the attention of young men who have had technical training and experience to the fact that their abilities can best be put at the service of the country by selecting a branch of service in which their special qualifications will be of the greatest use. The submarine force of the United States Navy requires the services, as officers on board submarines, of young men who have had technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering and who have had experience in these professions. It is intended to enroll a number of such men as provisional ensigns in the Naval Reserve Force, give then a course of instruction in deck duties at Annapolis and a course in submarine work at New London. Those who successfully pass these courses will then be sent on hoard submarines for regular duty. It is requested that any men who desire this duty and who are qualified as below outlined send their names and addresses to the Commander Submarine Force, U. S. S. Chicago, care of Postmaster, New York. Qualifications required: Desire to serve in submarines. Degree of M. E. E. E., or E. M. Two and one-half years' practical experience in profession. Undisturbed sampling of shale has always been difficult. As pert of a comprehensive subsurface investigation for a nuclear power plant in northwestern Illinois, the Maquoketa shale, which contains seams of argillaceous dolomite, was sampled using different coring techniques. Since the Maquoketa shale is extremely fissile, careful sampling preservation by both lateral and vertical confining was utilized. The samples were tested to determine both static and dynamic properties. A relationship between void ratio and compression index, swell index, and swell pressure ratio was established. Correlation was found between the dynamic properties and both undrained shear strength and confining stress. Based on the results of the sampling and testing programs, recommendations for sampling and sample preservation techniques are given. INTRODUCTION Undisturbed sampling and preservation of samples of weathered, fiasile shale is often a very difficult task. The often erratically varying degree of weathering with depth complicates sampling and makes reproducibility of testing results difficult. Therefore, the testing of weak, weathered rock very often yields a wide variety of test results with large data scatter. The reproducibility of teat results usually associated with water-deposited soils is seldom, if ever, obtained. The testing and sampling program described in this paper was part of a comprehensive subsurface investigation for a nuclear power plant in northwestern Illinois. The sampling, preservation and testing program of shale samples taken from the Maquoketa shale are described, and, in particular, the different sampling techniques and sample preservation procedures are evaluated with respect to their effectiveness. The samples obtained by these procedures were subjected to a comprehensive testing program, including both static and dynamic testing in order to provide input for soil-structure interaction analysis. GEOLOGY The Maquoketa Shale Group is of Ordovician age and is part of the Cincinnatian Series. The area where the shale samples were taken was in a broad sea far from sources of clastic sediments during most of Ordovician time. However, during Cincinnatian time when large deltas in the Appalachian region were being formed, clastic sediments from the east dominated the sedimentation ii. Illinois, resulting in formation of the shale and dolomite shales of the Maquoketa Shale Group (Willman et al., 1975). The geologic unit sampled consists of a greenish gray to gray silty shale containing numerous 1- to 12-inch (2.5- to 30.5-cm) thick interbeds of argillaceous dolomite. The Putnam Coal Mine, at design capacity, will be the third largest underground bituminous coal mine in the world and will feature the world's longest single flight belt conveyor. Construction is now in process; initial mining will commence in early 1969 and design capacity will be reached in 1971. The Putman Coal Mine reserves are located in south-central West Virginia and contain approximately 27,000 acres of prime Pittsburgh No. 8 coal; reserves are sufficient to support a 3.5 million tpy operation for over 30 years. The mine portal area is located some six miles inland from the Kanawha River. The river loading facility is located approximately 156 miles by way of river from the market.

In order to implement the most efficient and cost-effective hydraulic fracturing stimulation treatment within a particular region, a thorough understanding of the in-situ stress state and rock properties is paramount (Smith et al., 1978; Warpinski et al., 1982). Several studies conducted in order to "characterize" formations have provided invaluable insight into the relationship between lithologic properties, depth, in-situ stress magnitude and hydraulic fracture orientation. These studies have substantiated that at shallow depths, rock properties such as tensile strength and permeability can exert a substantial influence on the geometry of an induced hydraulic fracture. In turn, these "directional properties" can be related to existing geologic conditions during the time of deposition or major diagenetic alteration of the rock body. As the depth of the "payzone" increases, the role of the in-situ stresses and therefore the prevailing tectonic conditions becomes the dominant factor in determining fracture geometry. However, reservoir properties cannot be ignored. The porosity, permeability, pervasive fabric element and directional elastic properties can have a significant influence on the success of those tests conducted to measure the in-situ stresses either directly or through secondary observations... for instance, pore-pressure effects on measurements of in-situ stress. The purpose of this paper is to provide, through the use of appropriate field and laboratory examples, a more thorough understanding of in-situ stresses, rock properties and their integrated effect on hydraulic fracture properties. In addition to highlighting and expanding the wide body of existing literature, the case studies cited are designed to encourage mutual transfer of technology from petroleum-related, rock-mechanics efforts to other disciplines.

Perhaps some light can be thrown on the matter by using the formulas derived by Dahlstrom. Let us consider several geometrically similar cyclones where the apertures e and b are equal and proportional to the diameter D and which are operated with the same pressure drop. Eq 8 of Dahlstrom's paper can be written: Q Q = K D'. " or. if F is constant: Q = K D18 K is a constant of proportionality. Introducing this value of Q in eq 13 gives elimination efficiency = K D0' " Elimination efficiency, in the terminology of Dahlstrom, means the diameter of particles, in microns, which divide equally between the underflow and the overflow. This denomination is regrettable and it would be preferable to call it diameter of separation or characteristic size or any other name connoting a size rather than an efficiency. Whatever the name used, the above equation shows a slow increase in the fineness of separation when the diameter of the cyclone decreases. For example, if a 14-in. cyclone gives a 400-mesh separation (37 microns), geometrically similar cyclones, having the same pressure drop will give separations at the sizes shown below.

IN connection with its investigations of the blast'-furnace process, the Bureau of Mines, in coöperation with the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station, developed a 6-ton experimental furnace. Such a furnace was needed to determine the feasibility of producing ferromanganese from Minnesota manganiferous iron ores, a problem of national importance because of the present need for manganese in the steel industry and our small reserves of ferro-grade ores. Furnace operators are reluctant to use new or untried raw materials or to make decided innovations in practice on account of the financial hazard of experimenting with full-scale equipment. A small furnace which can be operated at a relatively low cost is particularly adapted for testing new, raw materials and for determining the feasibility of decided innovations in practice. Laboratory experiments, plus whatever information may be available, are valuable but often do not indicate the net result of changes in an operation involving a large number of interrelated variables. From time to time the coöperation of the Bureau of Mines is solicited in connection with problems involving departures from normal procedure. Under these circumstances some sort of a practical demonstration is a desirable forerunner to full-scale operations which appear feasible after small-scale tests.

In 1918 the American Society for Testing Materials held a symposium2 on what was then known as season cracking. The sessions included six papers, all on brass. During the ensuing 26 yr., many new workers have come into the field and several other metals have been found subject to failure by stress-corrosion cracking when the right combination of stress and environment is achieved. It is not surprising, therefore, that the present symposium has brought forth 29 papers covering alloys of seven important metals. The phenomenon of stress-corrosion cracking is not necessarily confined to these seven metals. Dix3 has stated, "Indeed, it is probable that ingenious investigators can find solutions which will stress-corrosion crack any known metal or alloy." Mears, Brown, and Dix4 have indicated that stress- corrosion cracking failures are not necessarily limited to metals but may include the plastics. It is to be expected that the increase in the number of metals known to crack in service and the general emphasis on such failures at a symposium such as this will alarm many to whom the subject is un- familiar. Capital, as represented by mineral resources, is being exhausted rapidly without possibility of identical replacement. The public must be discouraged from thinking-why worry about the bank balance so long as there are plenty of blank checks? Instead of each man, woman, and child being owners of a mineral capital of $89,000 as former Secretary Ickes once stated, they are really the guardians of a mineral reserve which, when harvested, cannot be reproduced. The proper use of this material is the basis of modern civilization and military power. The best American institutions cannot be maintained or transmitted to our children unless this trust is guarded. It is unfortunate that more attention has not been focused on the fact that this country is headed for a have-not status in the family of great nations if some- thing is not done to preserve its mineral heritage. It is the privilege of the United States now to champion and implement democracy because it is industrialized and can get at its raw materials. A high price is being paid every day in mineral depletion for the privilege. No one can eat his cake and have it too. The United States still must face world-wide economic competition and, perhaps, World War III. In the final analysis all wealth comes from the ground, whether plant, animal, or mineral. Value is in-

A review of production in the Eastern District for 1930 is necessarily brief. Drilling operations were curtailed, due to economic conditions, which in turn reduced production. However, in spite of these conditions, there have been a few outstanding developments which surpass any of recent years. The development of a field in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, New York, has been rapid and probably reached its peak of production in 1930. The gas in this field comes from the White Medina Sand (Silurian), at an average depth of 2600 ft. Some of the wells had an open flow of 20,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day,' with an original rock pressure of 965 pounds2 per square inch. Another area developed during 1930 was the Tyrone field, in Tyrone Township, Schuyler County, New York. This field was discovered 2nd is practically controlled by the Belmont Quadrangle Drilling Corpn. of New York. The production is from the Oriskany Sand (Devonian), which is found at an average depth of 2100 ft. The field covers approximately 2000 acres, and to date has 14 producing gas wells. The largest well had an open flow of 15,000,000 cu. ft. and an original rock pressure of 740 Ib. The gas from this field is impregnated with sulfur, and requires washing before it is marketed. Because little is known of the Oriskany Sand, a brief description may be of interest. This sand outcrops at Oriskany Falls, New York, and has a thickness of 10 to 12 ft. Its texture is coarse grained, it is composed mostly of quartz and is a regularly bedded sandstone. At Yauger's Wood, in Cayuga County, New York, it is exposed and shows a thickness of 26 feet. The discovery of the Tyrone field led to much prospecting in the New York and the northern part of Pennsylvania, and as a result of this search, the Allegany Gas Co. struck a large gas well in Farmington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, which created considerable excitement through the Eastern District. No. 347.-A South African development company will shortly require the services-of a mill superintendent, who has a general knowledge of concentration, particularly of flotation, and is able to take charge of a copper concentrator treating 15,000 tons per month and employing 200 natives and a small number of white men. For the year 1934, there were 382 oi1 wells completed for a total initial of 146,965 bbl. Fifty-three wells were deepened for a total increase of 8363 bbl., bringing the total volume of new oil to 155,328 bbl. As of Jan. 1, 1934, the daily potential of the field as determined by the Texas Railroad Commission was 159,740 bbl. Of this amount 26,429 bbl. is "marginal oil," and 2682 bbl. is exempt on account of water. In December, 1934, the daily potential was established by the Railroad Commission as being 297,501 bbl. with a daily allowable of 56,800 bbl. Of this amount 31,993 bbl. is "marginal oil," and 2183 bbl. is exempt on account of water. There has been no field-wide test made during the year, and as a result the rated potential of the field is in all probability much higher than the actual potential. As each new well comes in, a five-day test is made under the supervision of the Railroad Commission. The potential thus established is added to the field potential and shares its pro rata part of the market outlet, which is the allowable production, no allowance

This paper generalizes the results of the recent theoretical and experimental investigations on the air-pulsated jigs in Japan. The pulsating mechanism is analyzed as a special vibratory system, and the jigging mechanism as a mass system subjected to the law of hindered settling. The results of investigations on the following items are reviewed: dynamics of the pulsating mechanism; pulsation in a practical TACUB jig development of a new type of air valve; uniform pulsation in a large Baum jig; motion and mobility of bed particles; separating speed in hindered conditions; and standard deviation in practical jigs.
