THE production of lead in the United States for the period from 1720 to 1912 was 10,432,668 tons valued at $924,600,000. The average price during this period was 4.4c. a pound, although lead sold at times below 3 cents. We know that in the early days of lead smelting in Montana lead was deliberately lost in the slag and only enough reduced as bullion to collect the silver. This bullion was freighted by ox team to Corinne, Utah, the terminus of the railroad at that time, and shipped to Swansea or Omaha, Neb., for refining. The slag from some of the above mentioned operations contained as much as 15 per cent lead and has since been resmelted. Since 1921 the production of lead has increased each year and the price and tonnage have been as follows :

Activities of silicon in Ni-Si melts have beelz determined in the temperature range 1480° to 1610°C from electromotive-force measurements involving the cells The data obtained are used to derive the activities of nickel and the integal free energies of mixing. Entropies of mixing are calculated from the free energies of mixing as obtained in the present study and the heats of mixing as available in the literature. ACTIVITIES in Fe-Si and Co-Si melts have been determined recently by the authors&apos; using galvanic cells consisting of alloy, an oxygen electrode, and an oxide melt as electrolyte. The present paper deals with activities in Ni-Si melts as measured with the same technique. A schematic diagram of the cell is shown in Fig. 1. The alloy and the electrolyte consisting of CaO and SiO2 are contained together in a silica-glass crucible. During the experiment the silica glass crystallizes to cristobalite on the surface of the crucible. Nickel contents of the electrolyte are very small (<0.1 pct as checked with chemical analysis), because of the noble character of nickel in comparison with silicon. A tapered silica tube is connected to the crucible through which a platinum or molybdenum wire is inserted, as shown in Fig. 1. A platinum tube reaches the surface of the CaO-SiO2 electrolyte from above. The platinum tube is provided with four holes on its side, through which oxygen of 1 atm pressure is blown over the electrolyte. The cell reaction is given by the equation Si(metal) + O2(gas) = SiO2(electrolyte) [3] and the galvanic electromotive force of the cell is given by the formula

THE Oaxaca coal fields, shown in Fig. 1, are located in the Alta Mixteca region in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero. Known outcrops are scattered over 3125 square miles. It is probable that further exploration will reveal a more extensive area of deposits. The region is of great importance to Mexico, as at present the only sources of coal are the fields near the U. S. border. Steel mills are also located in the North, and finished products must travel 600 to 800 miles to the area of consumption in central Mexico. Selective flocculation studies carried out with iron ore tailings generated at Kudremukh iron ore plant indicate that a concentrate containing 63% iron can be obtained from the tailings containing 34% iron with around 60% recovery. This opens up the possibility of recovering most of the iron lost in the tailings generated at 2 kt/h (2200 stph) while processing 22 Mt (24 million st) ore per year. This would mean that the productivity could increase by around 50%. In these studies, it has been established that caustic degraded tapioca starch is a most effective agent for selective flocculation. While potato starch after caustic degradation can also be used, neither the parent starch nor the amylopectin compound is as effective.

"The pumping of the underground water of the Butte mines is largely done from two central plants of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The mines of one part of the mining district are served by a modern and mechanically efficient underground plant at the High Ore mine, and the remaining part by a similar one at the Leonard mine. Properties not affiliated with the A. C. M. Co. have separate pumping plants, although in several instances that company handles the water of outside companies, under which arrangement costly single plants are dispensed with. An extensive system of underground crosscuts and drifts connects these mines to both the main pumping plants, so that either may receive the water from all the mines in case there should be a failure in the other to perform its designed service.Quintuple) vertical electric pumps, 7 inches by 12 inches each, of a capacity of 600 gals. per minute under a head of 1,203 feet, are installed at both the plants. Each pump is direct connected to two 150 h-p. motors using 2,300 volts, the motors being on top of the pumps.At the High Ore plant the power cable of 400,000 c. m. is placed in a nearby shaft, the cable at present being hung from the surface to the 2,200 level. From this cable feeders of 300,000 c. m. are laid in connecting crosscuts to the pumping station at the High Ore shaft.The Leonard motors use 440 volts. The practice of building the pumps with the motors on top requires stations with high roofs, but permits the operation of the pumps if they should be submerged by an unusual flow of water."

The process of lixiviating silver ores, which do or do not contain gold, by means of hyposnlphite of soda is likely to assume a very great importance in the West, the conditions being such that while it is applicable to very rich ores which do not contain lead enough to smelt, it is also equally applicable to many ores that are either too poor or too impure to be treated by any other process. Western ores are generally divided into four classes: those which contain copper enough to be smelted for copper, from which the gold and silver is extracted in the wet way, as is the practice of the Boston and Colorado works; those in which there is a large quantity of lead, which can be smelted for lead, and the gold and silver extracted from it; ores in which there is neither copper nor lead enough to allow of a process of smelting, but which can be treated in pans, these ores being " free milling " if they require no metallurgical treatment, or &apos;(rebellious" if they have to be roasted with or without the addition of salt; and ores which do not contain enough either of lead or copper for smelting, which are poor both in silver and gold, contain large amounts of sulphur, arsenic, and antimony, and cannot be treated in many places in the West by any of these processes. Roasting with salt would convert the base metals as well as the silver into chlorides, and would give in the amalgamation a very base bullion, and the expense of the process would be SO great that the margin of profit would be very small, the reason being that for the ordinary process of pan-amalgamation, which is the only one suitable for ores containing small amounts of the base metals, and poor in silver and gold, the cost of a plant for milling is so large as not to justify the expense of treating such ores. The electrolytic processes which have been partially successful in Europe have not been tried &apos;here. While in the near future they will undoubtedly be used, it is hardly possible to consider them now.

Expressions are derived for the orientation factors associated with dislocation damping due to dislocation motion in the basal slip plane. The results of the calculation of these factors for zinc crystals aye pvesepzted and the relevance of these results to ultvasonic-attenuation measuvements is discussed. In this paper expressions are derived for the orientation factors associated with damping of sound waves due to dislocation motion in the basal slip plane of hexagonal crystals. For zinc crystals, the orientation factors for dislocation motion in one slip direction only, as well as for simultaneous motion in all three basal slip directions, have been calculated at 1-deg intervals. The results of these calculations are presented in the form of contour diagrams in a sector of a standard polar coordinate graph. The calculations have been carried out for both the traveling- and the standing-wave conditions. The relevance of these results to ultra sonic-attenuation measurements is discussed. Associated with the calculation of the orientation factors, the modes of elastic-wave calculation were also evaluated, according to the procedure previously employed by Hinton and Green.&apos; The results of these calculations are not presented here since similar results have been reported earlier by Mus-grave.2 However, it should be mentioned that, although the qualitative features of Musgrave&apos;s results are preserved, the quantitative values are somewhat altered since different values for the elastic constants of zinc were used. ORIENTATION FACTORS It is convenient to refer to three different sets of coordinate axes, Fig. 1, in the following calculations. First, there are the Miller-Bravais axes which are used in describing the Miller-Bravais indices of planes and directions in a hexagonal crystal. These axes are denoted in the conventional manner by a,, a,, a,, and c. The second set of axes used is a rectangular Cartesian coordinate system located as shown in Fig. 1. Note that the x axis coincides with the close-packed direction al [2110], the z axis coincides with the c axis [0001], and the y axis is orthogonal to these two lying in the [0110 ] direction. Finally, a form of Eulerian angles is used to locate the position of the specimen axis. The angle between the specimen axis and the c axis is denoted by 0 and the angle between the projection of the specimen axis on the basal plane and the a, direction is denoted by ø. The majority of observations on plastic deformation of metal crystals indicates that such deformation is caused by the motion of dislocations on a limited number of crystalline planes and in a close-packed direction. In crystals with hexagonal symmetry the most prominent slip plane is the basal plane (0001) and the slip directiops- are one of the close-packed directions, [2110], [ 12101, or [ 1120]. To properly set the stage for the following work, several points must be clarified. First, we want to consider the contribution to the attenuation of elastic waves by dislocations only. While the Granato-Lucke, model for dislocation damping is presently the one most quoted, it is not necessary to refer the present work to it. The only assumption that need be made is that the motion of dislocations absorbs energy from the elastic wave and therefore attenuates it. It is immaterial here how this energy absorption occurs. However, because dislocations have been observed to move most freely on the (0001) plane for hexagonal crystals undergoing plastic deformation, it will be assumed that it is the dislocation motion on this plane which attributes to the observed attenuation. The basic orientation factor, Ok, is essentially the same as that used by Green and Hinton for fee crystals,4 defined by the equation

The advent of the space age and its promise of interplanetary flight has prompted new ideas for propulsion systems that will allow maximum energy with minimum fuel weight. The use of cesium as the source of energy for such rocket flights has been found desirable. Theoretical efficiency of a rocket fuel is measured in terms of specific impulse, defined as the number of pounds of thrust per pound of propellant consumed per second. Specific impulse is usually expressed in seconds (the number of seconds for which one pound of fuel would produce one pound of thrust) although it is really a measure of total energy, not of power. The most sophisticated chemical fuels have a specific impulse of 300 to 400 sec; liquid hydrogen heated by nuclear reactor has a specific impulse of 1000 to 1200 sec. Specific impulses as high as 20,000 sec, however, are theoretically attainable with the ion rocket, in which free cesium ions are accelerated across a voltage drop and ejected at high velocity.&apos; Characteristics of the system have been sketched by Boden. The desirable properties of an ion propellant are: 1) low ionization potential, 2) low boiling point, and 3) high atomic weight. Alkali metals best fulfill these requirements, and Table I indicates the superiority of cesium. The use of heavy complex ions such as UCl; is ruled out by their instability and other disadvantages.

THE o phases have a complex tetragonal structure with Lo/ao = 0.52 and 30 atoms per unit cell.1 A large number of such phases are now known to occur in various binary systems of the transition elements and they exhibit the following typical features: 2,3 The composition of binary o phases is variable, ranging from approximately A4B to ABI. With only a few exceptions, in the o phases the A-ele-ment comes from the V- or Cr- group of the periodic table, while the B-elements are from the Mn-, Fe-, Co-, or Ni- group. In the first long period the corresponding o phases of the V- and Cr-series have approximately the same compositions. However, as the B-element changes from Mn to Fe to Co to Ni, the mean composition shifts monotonously toward higher A-contents.2-4 For example, if the mean compositions of the various o phases with vanadium are compared with each other, the composition shift mentioned above becomes plainly visible: V 30Mn0 80 Vo.45Feo..,, Vo .,Coo. 45 and Vo.5Nio.3. Similiar composition shifts, although not the same composition values, were observed in u phases formed by second and by third long-period transition elements.3&apos;4 This behavior, very characteristic of o phases, is in rather sharp contrast to the usually quite well-behaved stoichi-ometry of the Laves phases. In the latter, the AB2 stoichiometry predominates, with A the large atom and B the small atom.= The p phase occurs in the four binary systems of Mo or W with Fe or Co. On the basis of their crystal structure determination, Arnfelt and westgren6 ascribed to the p phase in the Co-W system the ideal composition W,Co7. Since all four binary pphases have nearly the same composition, it would seem quite plausible that some definite stoichiometry such as A6B7, might be characteristic of this phase, as AB2 is of the Laves phases. On the other hand, it has been noted,7 that the phases occur at average electron concentrations near to those at which the various cr phases are found. Also, it has been pointed out by Shoemaker and associates8 that structurally the a phases and the p phases are somewhat related to each other; both of these structures may be described in terms of suitable stackings of quasi-hexagonal layers&apos;of atoms. By studying a suitably chosen ter- nary phase diagram, one might expect to be able to find out which one of the two conditions, the analogy with the o phase or the constant ratio between the number of large atoms and the number of small atoms in effect governs the behavior of the p phase. Several isothermal sections of ternary systems containing o phases have been investigated. In all cases where two binary o phases occur, these were found to be connected b a more or less straight ternary o phase field.7&apos; &apos;10 Such elongated o phase fields were also found in ternary systems in which only one of the limiting binaries is known to contain o phase. In this manner a latent o forming tendency could be detected and the virtual composition of a "binary o phase", which does not actually occur as such was approximately determined by extrapolation. The behavior of the phases, including their composition shift, is analogous to that of the classical electron compounds, as described by Hume-Rothery.11 In order to decide whether the p phase is essentially a "size compound" like the Laves phases, where a fixed stoichiometric ratio is quite generally maintained between the "large atoms" and the "small atoms", or whether the p phase is typically an "electron compound" in the same sense as ois, it was decided to investigate an isothermal section of the Mo-Mn-Co system. The Mo-Co system12 and the Mo-Mn system13 each are known to have a binary o phase. It could be therefore expected that a ternary o phase field will connect these two binary cr-phase fields. The p phase is known to occur in the Mo-Co system. If the p phase should turn out to form an elongated phase field extending deep into the ternary system, the following considerations mighto apply. The atomic radius of manganese (1.314for C.N.12) is between the va,lues for Mo (1.40Afor C.N.12) and for Co (1.26Afor C.N.12). If it is assumed that p is a "size compound", and that Mn is substituting for the smaller Co atoms in the p-structure in the ternary system, the y-phase field might be expected to extend parallel to the Mn-Co binary line. If Mn is substituting for the large Mo atoms in the p-structure, the p-phase field may be expected to extend parallel to the Mn-Mo binary line. On the other hand, if the p-phase turns out to be an "electron compound" like o, the ternary p-phase field should extend parallel to the ternary o -phase field connecting (Mo,Mn)owith (Mo, Co) a

WITH coal-preparation plants becoming more complex and containing widely diversified types of equipment and processes, it is necessary that considerable control be exercised in their operation. Rising mine costs make it imperative that close check be made of plant efficiencies to assure a minimum loss of coal to the refuse bank. Further, much of the coal sold today is sold on a competitive specification basis, and this makes it necessary to provide frequent analyses and inspections. Many &apos; plants are required to operate on a two or three-shift basis, and as a con- sequence an efficient organization is required to eliminate down time and provide for smooth low-cost operation. ORGANIZATION Probably the most important item for successful operation of a preparation plant is a capable, properly organized staff, with the individual workers properly informed and well trained for their particular jobs, clear-cut lines of authority among the supervisors and in general a standard operating procedure for most conceivable conditions that may occur. The idea of placing the older, partially disabled and generally incompetent coal miner in the cleaning plant, as was the practice on the earlier tipples, is entirely inadequate in a modern complex cleaning plant. The new plants require intelligent, alert, and reasonably educated men. With perhaps millions of dollars invested in an installation, it is poor business to use other than a well organized, well trained, and properly supervised force. Organizations naturally must vary with the size of the plant and local conditions; whether it is a central cleaning plant at a distance from the mine organization or one of several cleaning plants operated by the company. Smaller operations can be operated by a washery foreman, under the supervision of the mine superintendent or perhaps the "outside" superintendent. Large installations should have a plant superintendent either responsible to the mine superintendent or preferably, where possible, responsible to a preparation manager or engineer. The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure were exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geochemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont province of Cabarrus and Stanly counties, N.C. The area chosen for study is shown in Fig. 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, N.C. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low metamorphic grade. The area is considered to be an early Paleozoic active, continental margin. 1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the north-western quadrant and slate belt rocks to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1.

THE importance of ladle and teeming practice and its relationship to the yield and quality of the product has focused considerable attention on this phase of open-hearth operation. Inherently bad steel cannot be perfected by manipulation during teeming, but through the proper handling of "off heats" serious losses, which in many cases arise, can be greatly minimized. Conversely, good steel can be ruined as a result of poor workmanship in the -pit, and rendered unsuitable for application to orders where exacting surface and physical requirements are essential. Sufficient evidence has been secured to warrant careful investigation of pit operations when an abnormal number of basic defects develop in the semifinished product or are found on the inspection table. This paper is written from the standpoint .of the problems involved in making satisfactory ingots for sheet rolling. Furthermore, since rimming steel is almost universally used for manufacture of sheet, the data presented herein refer particularly to that type of steel. Going back some 30 years in open-hearth .history, the word "pit" properly described the hole into which the ladle was lowered to receive the metal tapped from the furnace. The working space was necessarily limited, and the disposal of slag and metal overflowing the ladle or lost because of breakouts presented a serious problem. The equipment, of course, was rather crude in the light of present-day development. Often no ladle stands were provided, the ladle being hung on the crane beneath the runner. When delayed taps occurred, the ladle was often held in position for many hours, thus tying up pit operations and causing delays to adjacent furnaces. Because of crowded conditions, slag thimbles were not used and a network of cast-steel triangles and old tapping bars, placed before the heat was tapped, was the means for removing slag from the hole. AT its meeting in the fall of 1937, the Executive Committee of the Coal Division considered the growing scarcity of young engineers entering coal mining with serious intentions. This scarcity was the cause of con-siderable alarm and a committee consisting of C. T. Hayden, E. A. Holbrook, C. E. Lawall and L. E. Young, with the writer as chairman, was appointed to gather factual data on the current trend. A questionnaire1 was designed and mailed to the heads of the 60 mineral technology schools listed by Prof. W. B. Plank in his article in September 1937.2 Replies were received from 46 institutions, not all from heads of coal-mining courses but all from men that at one time or another have had experience with some kind of coal-mining curricula and know current student impressions. Our committee is indebted to all of these gentlemen for their cooperation. Our committee hoped by this means to quickly reach the root of the trouble and make a set of comprehensive recommendations to the Coal Division for relieving the industry immediately from the growing dearth of youth who yearn for coal-mining careers, but the condition is more serious than at first diagnosed. We must now refer the question back to the Coal Division, with the recommendation that the Division get the industry&apos;s permission for still another major operation on its frame of mind. In addition to 10-year statistics on the first pay received by graduates in coal mining and other technical work, we requested enrollment data for 20 years from all schools with either mining engineering or mineral technology curricula. Nine leading questions were also plied, as shown in the Appendix. Every one of the answers was significant and inter-esting. Fortunately, we encountered positive frankness that was extremely helpful.

THE section delegates assembled Monday morning with the incoming president, W. H. Bassett, in the chair and F. W. Bradley as vice-chairman. The secretary called the roll and urged the delegates to become familiar with the activities of the Institute. He explained the allotment of funds to local sections and the uses to which these funds may be put. He also announced plans for travel by Mr. Bassett and asked the delegates to confer with him as to meetings en route. An invitation was extended for all section delegates to attend the Directors&apos; dinner Wednesday evening. He suggested that local sections hold a meeting once a year under the auspices of each division of the Institute. He further explained the system of choice of publications by members. The question of licensing of engineers was brought up, and the consensus of opinion among the membership was asked for. Because the matter is controversial, no official action has been taken and it was suggested that the&apos; local and State sections act separately in this regard. A. B. Parsons, the assistant secretary, next spoke. In his remarks he indicated surprise that many prominent mining men still did not belong to the Institute, and urged that section delegates make up a list of such prospective members and send it in to the office for study by the New York staff. ThE raw materials of the ceramic industry are mostly clays. This raw material is ground, water is added and the mixture pugged into a moist, plastic, rather stiff mass. From this mass the desired units of manufacture are made (bricks, hollow building tile, sewer pipe, etc.). These units are dried; then placed in kilns and heated until the desired degree of vitrification is obtained. For firing ceramic ware, two distinct types of kilns are used; namely, periodic and continuous tunnel. Periodic Kilns Periodic kilns are those ordinarily seen in a brick plant. They are either round or rectangular. The raw, dried, formed ware is piled or set in the kilns to depths frequently exceeding 10 ft. The kiln is heated until the ware is matured, then gradually cooled sufficiently to allow men to remove the ware; then the cycle is repeated. The time duration of the cycle may be more than two weeks. In order that heat can be distributed uniformly throughout the pile or setting, the units are placed so as to leave open spaces or flues throughout the pile for the passage of the hot gases. Each kiln is provided with a number of fireboxes (usually 10 or 12) spaced equally in the outside wall. The fireboxes may be equipped with flat or inclined grate bars or they may have no grates at all (dead bottom). Down-draft kilns are most used. In these the hot gaseous products of combustion from the fireboxes are deflected upward by bag walls just inside the fire zone. From the top of the kiln the gases are drawn down through the setting, off through holes in the kiln bottom, and conducted to a stack or stacks. In up-draft kilns the fireboxes are usually set somewhat lower. The hot gases are drawn inward and upward through the ware and pass off from the top. Up-draft kilns find their greatest use in the firing of common brick. In either case the problem is to maintain, as nearly as possible,

The development of cube-on-edge secondary re crystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon the ability of inclusions, such as manganese sulfide, to restrain nomal grain gvowth. The ability of inclusions to perform this function is shown to depend upon their size and distribution. The desired uniform dispersion of many small inclusions is obtained by controlling the cooling rate from above the solution tempmature of the inclusions or, alternatively, by drastic &apos;quenching from above the solution temperature followed by heat treating at a lower temperature. The development of the cube-on-edge secondary recrystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon both establishing the proper primary recrystallization texture and having inclusions to restrain normal grain growth. It has been suggested that the first requirement is met with a texture which, though weak, is near (110)[001]. A mechanism for secondary recrystallization originally proposed by ielsen&apos; is consistent with the presence of this primary texture. It is visualized that a secondary grain appears where two adjacent grains happen to be sufficiently similar in orientation to be capable of behaving as a single large grain. This pair of grains will grow at the expense of its smaller neighbors as a consequence of its having lower grain boundary free energy. Other explanations of the origin of the secondary recrystallization texture have been offered,&apos; and it can be concluded that the mechanism is not fully understood. Nevertheless, it is apparent that operationally the necessary primary recrystallization texture is obtained simply by interposing an anneal during the cold reduction to final gage. The role of inclusions in the development of the secondary recrystallization texture has been demonstrated by May and Turnbull4 in a comparison of a high-purity heat and a heat containing manganese sulfide. They showed that the driving force for secondary recrystallization is inversely proportional to the diameter of the matrix grains and that the function of the inclusions is to maintain a small matrix grain size. Other inclusions, such as various sul- fides,&apos;)&apos; silicon nitride,8 and vanadium nitride,&apos; titanium carbide,&apos;&apos; and vanadium carbide," have been shown to be effective in promoting secondary recrystallization to the cube-on-edge texture. There is also evidence that silica inclusions in Si-Fe strip made by powder-metallurgy techniques perform this function.&apos; This report is concerned with the second of the two requirements for secondary recrystallization, namely the importance of the metallurgical control of the size and therefore number of inclusions. While the concepts involved are simple, they are fundamental to the making of this material. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A heat containing 3.27 pct Si, 0.026 pct S, 0.06 pct Mn, and 0.004 pct C was made in an air induction furnace from electrolytic iron, 98 pct ferro-silicon, electrolytic manganese, and iron sulfide. The heat was divided between graphite and baked-sand molds with a cavity 2-5/8 by 5 in. and with walls 2-3/4 in. thick. Slabs, 1 in. thick and 2-5/8 by 5 in., were cut from the ingots and hot-rolled either in the as-cast condition or after one of the heat treatments described later. After pickling, the 80- to 100-mil-thick hot-rolled band was, unless otherwise noted, heat-treated for 5 min at 900°C before being cold-rolled to 25 mils. After a heat treatment of 1 to 3 min at 860°C, the strip was cold-rolled to 12 mils, the final thickness. The percent cube-on-edge texture was determined by dividing the maximum torque as averaged from four samples by the maximum torque of a 3-1/4 pct Si-Fe single crystal having the (110) plane in the plane of the sample. The torque measurements were made in a field of 1000 oe on 1-in.-diam disks. Since the publication of Prof. J. W. Richards&apos;s paper on The Schumacher Briquetting Process,&apos; this process has been in operation on a practical scale in two plants in the United States, and a few notes on the results obtained may be of interest. An experimental plant, consisting of a toggle press and a hydraulic press, was installed at Johnstown, Pa., together with the necessary bins and other equipment, and an attempt was made to briquette a mixture of Mahoning fines and blast-furnace flue dust, in a ratio of 7 parts of ore to 3 parts of dust. The results were unsatisfactory, in that the briquettes made were not hard enough to stand the severe handling to which they were subjected in the various transferences necessary between the press and the furnace. The trouble was due to several causes: First, the mechanical arrangement of the plant, which did not lend itself to a proper hardening and loading of the briquettes into the cars. Second, the irrrgular composition of the flue dust, as to both its lime and its fine coke contents. Third, the variability of the moisture content of the ore, and its viscosity when wet. Fourth, the ratio of fine ore to flue dust; that is, it was attempted to bind in too large a quantity of fine ore for the small amount of flue dust used. The first trouble could be overcome, and has been improved upon in the plant as it stands to-day. The second trouble was important, because of the small amount of dust used as a binder, and might have been easily removed by mixing the flue dust of the different furnaces, which, however, was never done. The third difficulty was more serious, but could have been partly solved, had it been possible to meet this along with the fourth difficulty, by decreasing the percentage of ore in the briquettes. It was proposed to do this, but it seems that the problem at the works in question is, primarily, to prepare Mahoning fines for reduction in the blast furnace, and only secondarily to use up the flue dust, and a solution along this line did not seem to be interesting.
