THE production of metal-working tools has been revolutionized within the last 18 years, since the invention by Taylor and White of a process of heat-treating steel tools, which resulted in increasing their cutting capacity several fold over what it had been before. This was an exceedingly important invention, although it consisted principally, in establishing this fact overheating when it accidentally, occurred in the ordinary:-process of forging, spoiled the steel, but if carried very much farther or to-a point that would have been considered absolutely ruinous to the steel under the old ideas, it resulted in imparting a cutting power several times as: high as had ever been obtainable before. The quality that gives the steel this power eventually received the name of "red hardness." This name originated in the fact that tools possessing this property retain their resistance to deformation even when subjected to, such severe cutting stresses that the metal just back of the point is heated, under certain conditions, to a visible red. It is interesting in this connection to note that the edge of the tool itself does not become red because it is continually cooled by the fresh metal into which it is forced. The result of Taylor and White's invention was an intensive study, of tool steels all over the world and, although there was-great diversity of analysis in the high-speed steels of the early days, these steels today generally have an approximately similar composition, the principal constituents being froth 15 to 20 per cent. of tungsten, from 4 to 6 percent. of chromium, from 1 to 2 per cent. of vanadium, and from 0.50 to 1 per cent. of carbon. It is probably safe to say that standard brands of such high-speed steels will do from five to ten times as much work in a given time as the carbon steels, and even the Musket steels, which were the sole dependence up to the beginning of this century, when the Taylor-White process was discovered. With the increasing cost of labor, it is not surprising that these steels have driven froth the market, for all but limited purposes, the older types of steel.

A phenomenological theory for a one-dimensional unstable miscible displacement similar in type to the Buckley-Leverett model but including the effects of mixing is proposed An equation giving the fractional flow of pure solvent through an oil phase containing dissolved solvent is derived including the effects of gravity and nonbomogeneities. Numer ical integration of the resulting pair of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations gives volumes of dissolved and undissolved solvent as functions of space and time. Parameters in the model which characterize mixing due to dispersion were determined from experimental data; the parmeters correlated with viscosity ratio. The results indicate that the rate of dispersive mixing is proportional to volumetric flow rate Incorporated into our equations were Koval's heterogeneity factor H. which characterizes mixing due to channeling. This allowed satisfactory predictions of displacement behavior observed in horizontal floods in nonhomo-geneous cores; but in most cases the values of H which we used were considerably larger than those used by Koval. INTRODUCTION It has been shownl,2,3 that for favorable viscosity ratios, the diffusion equation with convection satisfactorily describes the behavior of a miscible displacement in a porous media. Numerous attempts to develop a satisfactory mathematical description for the case of unfavorable viscosity ratio have been reported, but they have met with only partial success. These attempts, which are reviewed by oval! have taken two approaches: (1) development of a flow model akin to the Buckley-Leverett approach for immiscible displacement neglecting the effects of mixing5,6 and (2) simultaneous application of Darcy's Law for flow and the diffusion equation with a convection term for mass transfer.7,8,9 We set out to construct a mathematical model of Type 1 including, though, the effects of mixing. Based upon a set of hypotheses, we derived a pair of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations which describe in a one-dimensional system the combined effects of flow and mixing. To work with these equations it was necessary to develop a fractional flow formula. The combined system was integrated numerically using the method of characteristics. In our equations the mixing process is characterized by four parameters. Three of these, labeled ß, P1 and P2, account for dispersive type mixing. The fourth is the heterogeneity factor H, proposed by Koval to account for channeling due to nonhomogeneities in the porous media. Values of the parameters which would cause agreement between theory and experiment were determined by trial-and-error for miscible floods conducted in horizontal cores of both homogeneous and heterogeneous materials. Calculations were also performed for vertical floods in homogeneous cores. The purpose of this paper is (1) to present the details of the mathematical analysis, (2) to present the results of the calculations, (3) to consider what light the results shed on the mixing process in an unstable miscible displacement, and (4) to provide a firmer foundation for the correlation technique developed by Koval for predicting the behavior of unstable miscible floods. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The problem is to construct a mathematical model which describes in one dimension the observed behavior in an unstable miscible displacement. The approach is phenomenological in that the equations are based on assumptions which violate certain physical precepts known to apply to the displacement phenomenon. However, the assumptions do allow us to account mathematically for the more essential phenomena. The work is of value if we can quantitatively predict experimental results which heretofore could not be predicted, even though the synthetic nature of the model belies complete explanation of the observations. We assume that the system is comprised of two contiguous flowing phases. One phase, which we call free solvent, has the properties of pure solvent. THE brilliant and very original matter in Professor Jeffries' discussion ? should rank not only as an independent paper, but as a most important one. In particular, the explanation which it gives of the remarkable Sauveur phenomenon, over which so many of us have puzzled long and hard, is so clear, complete, and cogent as to go far toward establishing Professor Jeffries' hypothesis. The very features of Professor Sauveur's photographs which fit this hypothesis so exactly are reproduced in Chappell's photographs of steel coarsened under somewhat different conditions. 1 The ideas developed by these discoveries are so novel that conven- ience of language seems to call for new conventional terms for expressing them. In, what follows here I propose certain terms for this end, for criticism and improvement, and I attempt to generalize from Professor Jeffries' hypotheses. Generally speaking, a given set of grains which undergo no growth in the cold will, when the temperature is raised progressively, start to grow on reaching a certain temperature, and will continue growing at all higher temperatures. The "germinative" temperature is that at which growth begins, quite as the conditions which cause a seed to grow are "germinative." We have then. an inert temperature range below the germinative temperature, and a growth range above it, the germinative temperature being the limit between these two ranges. So, too, a germinant grain is one which is at its germinative temperature, and hence beginning to grow, while inert grains are those below their own germinative temperature, and the term "growing grains" includes those which are germinant and those which are above their germinative temperature. These last could be called "supergerminant" if the distinction should be needed.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY BY "thermochemical factors" we refer to those variables which affect the net heat which must be put into the bath in order to make a heat of steel from any given set of charge materials. This is admittedly only one phase of the production rate problem. The whole problem includes also consideration of rate of charging, flame radiation intensity, rate of optimum fuel input obtainable without undue damage to the furnace structure and any variations in conditions such as stirring, slag volume or viscosity which affect the rate at which heat can flow down and away from those exposed surfaces where the heat is first received from the flame. Because a given type of charge in a shop is often considered as being nearly constant in both physical and chemical characteristics from one heat to another, and because such a state of affairs may be thought of as resulting in a reasonably constant net heat requirement, this requirement is usually neglected as an invariable, inevitable matter, about which nothing can be done. With normally variable charge, and variable percentages of limestone and cold pig, however, the net heat requirement can be subject to very appreciable change; it may also be affected by such things as the currently popular procedure of blowing oxygen into the bath, To bring the general problem of production rate into better perspective, therefore, it seems worthwhile to try to evaluate the net bath heat requirement and the amount by which it may change through variation in different factors. Because our calculated values of net heat are admittedly uncertain, we have tried to check them in part by statistical data on actual production rates over rather large groups of commercial heats. The results of calculation of net heat requirements in a wide range of actual commercial practices may first be summarized briefly. We find a wide range between the extremes of different practices, as would be expected, with duplex practice (essentially blown metal plus hot metal) having essentially a zero net heat requirement, an all-cold charge practice somewhat over 1 million Btu per ton of steel and a high hot metal practice about 0.75 million Btu per ton. Over the commercial range of scrap plus hot metal practice, increasing the percentage of hot metal from 40 to 78 pct, with other factors nearly constant, decreased the net heat by only some 5-10 pct, The net heat is increased by about 1.2 pct for each I pct of the metallic charge present as cold pig. Calculated values of oxygen supplied by air varied from about 25 up to 60 lb per ton of steel, and in a 60 pct hot metal practice, an increase from 32 to 52 lb oxygen from air decreased the calculated net heat from 0.88 to 0.74 million Btu per ton. Use of pure cold oxygen to substitute for about one half of the total charge ore (about 28 lb oxygen replacing 145 lb ore per ton of steel) decreased the

IN the cyanidation of gold, silver and mixed ores, the solids suspended in the pulp after fine grinding, primary settling and series agitation are subjected to a washing step known, generally, as countercurrent decanta-tion, abbreviated C.C.D. The conventional C.C.D. plant consists of a series of separate thickeners-three to five in number-arranged in series on slightly different elevations. Solids settled in the first thickener are pumped at maximum density into the second thickener, where they are diluted with weak solution overflowing the third. After settling in the second thickener they are pumped to the third, where the process of repulping with still weaker solution is repeated, and so on throughout the system, until they reach the last thickener and are repulped with barren solution or water. Recently there has been developed a new type of thickener, known as the Dorr Washing Tray Thickener, consisting of up to five individual thickeners, which performs in a single unit all the functions of a conven-tional C.C.D. plant. Fig. 1 illustrates the essential features. It is a multicompartment tray thickener, in which the trays operate in series instead of in parallel for countercurrent washing. Feed enters the top compartment via a central, semisubmerged feed well. Strong solution overflows into a peripheral launder. Solids settle to the bottom, are raked to the center and flow into the top of the second compartment, directly below, via an inverted cup and seal. Solids pass downward, compartment by compartment, against a counter flow of wash solution and finally of fresh water. Thus, in accord-ance with the basic C.C.D. principle, the solids transfer the dissolved metal content to the wash solution and finally are removed by a dia-phragm pump from the bottom compartment virtually free of valuable material. Similarly, the wash water, as it flows through the system, becomes increasingly enriched in dissolved metal until it overflows from compartment two and returns to the process.

This chapter on the Alaska Juneau mill is intended to make clear that "choice of methods," or the selection of proper methods, is the first essential step in launching a new enterprise; and to illustrate that when entering into new country where local conditions and physical features are new or strange to an engineer, he should respect the practices already adopted and followed in meeting peculiar conditions in these new countries that may seem strange to a casual visitor. For example, Americans going into Malay Peninsula with their most up-to-date machinery for drilling placer prospect holes found their cost to total about $3 per foot; by adopting native methods, it was found the same work could be done for 50 cents per foot. Also, those not used to frozen road conditions in a country of arctic climate might scrape the snow off such a road and cause unending road troubles into the following spring and summer; while natives understanding local conditions would leave the snow on the road. A plate of an 18 pct Ni (250 grade) maraging steel was homogenized, cold rolled, and re crystallized to produce a fine grained, homogeneous structure. The strength properties were then measured as a function of cold rollinq prior to aging. Material in the solution heat treated condition exhibited substantial strengthening from cold rolling. The strength increase and the rate of strengthening were proportional to the amount of cold work. This benefit, of up to 50 ksi, was retained during aging for 3 hr at 900°F. The structures produced by cold rolling and aging have been systematically investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The dislocation debris produced by cold work influences the morphology and distribution of precipitate particles as well as the rate of precipitation. An essential feature of the high nickel maraging steels is a martensitic transformation from y to a with the resultant production of a supersaturated bcc solid solution. This solution decomposes to form precipitates during a subsequent aging treatment.' The martensitic transformation in low carbon Fe-Ni alloys and the mechanical properties of these alloys have been studied extensively.2"4 The carbon content of maraging steel is kept very low to avoid the embrittling Fe3C phase and to minimize the acicular, or twinned martensite common to high carbon steels. Maraging steels are usually strengthened only by heat treatment, but cold working is also quite effective in this respect as was shown by Decker, Eash, and Goldman,' Kula and Hickey,5 and the present work. There is, however, some disagreement between the present results and those of Kula and Hickey. Because of their unusual combination of strength and toughness, the maraging steels are suitable for applications where reliability at high stress levels is required. The strength level is achieved through a combination of solid solution hardening,' substructure hardening,3 and precipitation hardening,6 of which the last is the most important. The toughness of these steels has been reported to be a result of the absence of brittle grain boundary precipitates,7 and the fact that the matrix is a massive martensite rather than a twinned martensite.' One of the problems in the manufacture and use of maraging steel has been its tendency to develop laminations in sheets parallel to the rolling plane.9,10 The present investigation was intended to determine whether or not an improvement in the microstructure of this steel by thermomechani-cal processing would improve mechanical properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A plate ($ in. thick) of an 18 pct Ni-250 grade maraging steel* was obtained and examined metallo- "Analysis, wt pct: 18.1 Ni, 8.6 Co, 5.3 Mo, 0.4 Ti, 0.07 Mn, 0.05 Cr, 0.05 Si, 0.002B. 0.1 Cu. 0.05 Al. 0.002 Zr, 0.016 C, balance Fe. graphically. It was found to contain laminations as described by previous investigators. This plate was then annealed at 2100°F for 24 hr to promote homogeneity. Pilot studies on small coupons had shown that this was the minimum temperature required to accomplish homogenization in 24 hr. Since this treatment caused excessive grain growth, the steel was subsequently cold rolled and recrystallized. Cold rolling was accomplished at about 5 pct per pass to a total reduction of 66 pct. The standard solution annealing treatment (1 hr at 1500°F) was adequate to cause recrystallization of the cold worked steel. The recrystallized steel was then cold rolled and ground by various amounts to produce specimens with uniform thickness and selected amounts of cold rolling. All tensile specimens with less than 90 pct cold reduction were ground to a thickness of 0.050 in. Specimens with 90 pct cold reduction were 0.025 in. thick. All

The Committee, appointed early in May, met and organized in Washington, May 9, 1923, and were then advised that such data as they required would as far as obtainable be submitted to them in tabulations, and that they could not be allowed to see the individual reports nor know the identity of the operators on whose reports the figures submitted were based, therefore the Committee's valuation is based on data received from your statisticians, and on tonnages estimated by your staff and by the United States Geological Survey. Various methods of valuation for mining properties have been suggested, but all authorities seem to agree in accepting, as the fairest and most practicable and logical, a capitalization of the estimated future earnings, when such estimate can reasonably be made. Hoover and Finlay both emphasize this. The United States Supreme Court says in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Co., v. Backus, 154 U. S. 439: But the value of the property results from the use to which it is put and varies with the profitableness of that use, present and prospective, actual and anticipated. There is no pecuniary value outside of that which results from such use. The amount and profitable character of such use determines the value. The Committee on Federal Taxation of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, appointed in 1919, in its report states: A proper value of a mining property is the present value of the prospective net earnings, taking into account probable variations in output and value. Ingalls ("Wealth and Income of the American People," p. 97) says: The fundamental principle of mine valuation is the present worth of an annual dividend accruing during the period of years corresponding with the lie of the mine. It is a convention that the estimated period shall not be more than 30 years.

RECENTLY the producing branch of the petroleum industry has shown a considerable and growing interest in the quantitative determination of the water, oil, and gas content of cores as it relates to estimation of reserves, to providing a, basis for judging as to the feasibility of applying various secondary-recovery and pressure-maintenance processes, and in general to the operation of producing properties. For years it has been known that oil, gas and water coexisted in the pores of many semidepleted oil measures. It is now generally believed that oil-bearing beds contain connate water in amounts varying up to 50 per cent of the pore space. However, only lately has reliable direct evidence of the extensive occur-rence of connate water in oil sands been published. Very little work has been done to ascertain the effect of this water on the productivity and ultimate recovery of oil from wells. It was the intent of this research to study the influence of this indigenous water on the flow of oil through unconsolidated sands, with the hope that the results could be applied qualitatively to the flow of oil in underground reservoirs partly saturated with water. Obviously, ultimate recovery estimates based on the void volume of the reservoir will be in error unless a, conscious or unconscious correction is made for the volume of water occupying a portion of the effective pore volume of the reservoir- Evaluation engineers in the past have applied arbitrary saturation and recovery factors that may inadverently have compensated for the failure to consider specifically the water content. Nevertheless, the evidence available indicates that these factors need revising if each is to be independently correct and truly representative. Although the mere fact that the connate water renders part of the pore volume of the reservoir incapable of containing oil is of primary importance to the operator, it is also of interest to know whether and to what extent the presence of varying amounts of interstitial water influ-ences the permeability of the sand to oil.

"The greatest mining center in the state of Utah is the incorporated town of Bingham about twenty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The principal industry of this vicinity, prior to the early fall of 1 863, was lumbering and the first saw-mill in the state was built near the mouth of Bingham Canyon. Early in the fall of that year, George B. Ogilvie discovered gold and shortly afterward the first mining district in the state was organized. Some writers place the discovery of gold in the canyon in the late fifties. If this be so, however, the matter was kept extremely quiet because no mining was engaged in until after Ogilvie's discovery.Bingham was a placer mining camp, producing about one million dollars' worth of dust and nuggets from placers up and down the canyon and in Bear Gulch until early in the seventies, or about ten years after the discovery of gold, when a large body of argentiferous lead ore was discovered and soon after heavy shipments were made from a half dozen or more properties.In 1 8 74, A. H. and George L. Bemis erected the first concentrating plant in the state for the treatment of sulphide lead ores.The history of the camp as a producer of copper begins in the summer of 1 88 7, when Enos A. Wall noticed, in observing prospecting drifts and inclines driven some years before, the discoloration caused by the coppery solution. As a large part of the adjacent ground had been abandoned, he located two claims, which he called the ""Dick Mackintosh"" and the ""Charles Reid,"" after two of his friends.Late in 1896, the Highland Boy Mine produced sulphide ore rich in copper, causing a revival of interest in the copper potentialities of the camp, and during the next seven years a number of new claims were located ."

In one field in South Texas, approximately 72 per cent of the pressure build-up results show a characteris-i.rtic "hump" (i.e., the pressure builds up and then falls off) which makes interpretation by. standard methods impossible Correlation of size and time of hump with formation permeability. well productivitv index, and method of completion led to the tentativc, conclusion that the humps were caused by segregation of gas and oil in the wellbore after closing-in"'. This conclusion was confirmed by performance of simple laboratory bubble-rise experiments, by theoretical bubble-rise time calculations, and by a detailed calculation of PVT behavior in the well of a particular well Oil which accurate Surface and bottom-hole pressure measure-ments were untile. The hump behavior has since been found to occur in many other fields. The cause, however, is not the mine in all cases. In some of these the hump is trace-ahie to leaks in the tnbing which allow influx from the annulus after closing-in. In other cases the hump is traceable to leaks in the device separating pay horizons in dually completed wells. It is concluded that the recording of both surface and bottom-hole pressures is desirable in wells which show an anomalous build-up behavior. A number of field examples is discussed where use of both sets of measurements enables the cause for anomalous behavior to he found, (and a reasonable interpreation of bottom-hole pressure to be made. INTRODUCTION Theoretically the pressure build-up in an infinite reser-voir should be a linear function of In [(t + at)/nere t is the production time and At a the closed-in time. Some of the variations from this behavior arc well known, such as the curved portion immediately after shut-in which results from after-production and skin effect, and the flattened end portion which results from boundary effects in a limited reservoir. The effect of stratified producing zones and irregular geometrical drainage patterns may also contribute unusual characteristics to build-ups. However, the effect of still another phenomenon—that of movement of fluids within the wellbore—has been neglected in most build-up studies to date. Fluid movements within the wellbore after shut-in occur as a result of after-production, packer failures, leaks in the casing or tubing, or buoyancy of the gas phase when both gas and liquid are present in the well. Each of these movements can influence the pressure build-up, sometimes sufficiently to negate use of the data for computing permeability or stabilized build-up pressure. Examples of each of these phenomena are discussed below. FIELD OBSERVATIONS ON HUMP BUILD-UPS In approximately 75 per cent of the wells in a medium-sized field in South Texas the pressure build-up curves rise to 3 maximum and then decline to what appears to be a stabilized reservoir pressure as shown in Fig. I. Similar behavior has also been observed in wells in other fields in Texas and Louisian:,. Because of the possibility of such behavior being a mechanical failure of the pressure bomb. the bombs were run in tanden into one well which had been known to exhibit this behavior. Gordon Parr (University of Alberta) —While we appreciate the difficulties involved in any investigation of this system, and we wish to congratulate the authors on their comprehensive efforts, there are several aspects of their paper that are not clear to us. 1) If the 6 phase is, in fact, isomorphous with Ti3Sn, it should not be designated Ti,Al. An 4B structure cannot be isomorphous with an ordered structure of the DO type. Anderko et al.' suggested that the structure be called Ti3A1, and we believe this to be a more reasonable designation. The confusion is compounded when the authors designate the phase Ti3Al—yet the composition limits of this phase (according to their diagram) are approximately Ti,A1 and Ti,Al. Further, while Pietro-kowsky is said to have pointed out that the structure of the 6 phase is isomorphous with Ti3Sn, we understand that this was only a suggestion that was not confirmed. Margolin and Ence do not appear to have presented any evidence to support the suggested isomorphism. 2) In referring to the precipitation observed microscopically during the initial breakdown of high A1 a during quenching, the authors state that "such precipitation is not likely to be detected by Debye-Scherrer techniques". We suspect that if the precipitate was visible by optical microscopy, it must have at least one dimension of the order of 1 or greater, and would therefore be readily detected by diffraction techniques. 3) The authors state: "The basis for this suggestion (that 6 forms peritectically P + L—6) is the observation that the ,'3 + 6 and 6 phase fields were

THE attempts of British investigators to arrive at definite knowledge concerning the nature of the nitrogenous constituents of coal have been mainly made through studies of the behavior of coal on carbonization and gasification. There have been carried out numerous determinations of ,the distribution of nitrogen in the products of carbonization under laboratory and large-scale conditions; and by a careful consideration of the extent to which nitrogen is liberated, say as ammonia, at different temperatures and under different conditions of operation as regards atmosphere, it has been possible to form some general notions as to the nature of the nitrogenous compounds present in the coal, and at the same time to arrive at clearer ideas as to what are the important operative factors in determining the ammonia yield under working conditions. This work has been spread over many years and is summarized below. The difficulties of connecting the results in such a way as to allow of the nitrogenous constituents of the coal being described in terms of specific organic structure are great. They arise, for example, in the carbonization process, because the phenomena of decomposition observed at any one temperature can only refer to compounds decomposing at that temperature, each of them with a previous history of chemical transformations occurring at lower temperatures. To put it in another way, the compounds occurring in the coke at any stage are not in the least likely to be those present in the original coal. The same difficulty, in a milder form, occurs when the method of differential solution is attempted. There is always the preliminary question, almost impossible to answer, as to how far the separation by the use of the solvent has involved some form of decomposition of the original compounds. In the following summary, an attempt has been made to bring together results obtained by British workers.

(Read at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting, May, 1877.) THE following discussion was suggested by an experiment of Mr. Krom, the manufacturer of air-jigs, to illustrate the superiority of air over water as a medium of concentration. The paper is written in the interest of no system of concentration, but simply to test the experiment, and, perchance, to add something to the general fund of information on the subject. To speak of testing an experiment by a theoretical discussion, may seem a misuse of terms, but the theories concerning falling bodies and the resistance of fluids are pretty well crystallized into laws, which may properly be used to show where experiments which seem to refute them were improperly performed, and that instead of refitting they only corroborate. It is well known that a sphere of galena 1/8 inch in diameter, and a sphere of quartz 1/2 inch in diameter, are equal falling in water ; that is, these two spheres, being placed together in a column of water at rest or in motion, will practically remain together, falling or rising together, or remaining in suspension. This meeting marks the point at which the long-standing dissatisfaction with the mineral-land laws, the innumerable protests against them, and the many isolated efforts to obtain relief, have developed into a general movement for their revision. That part of the mining industry which is affected by these laws has three general organizations which are able to speak for it: the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of . America, and the American Mining Congress; all of which are represented in this meeting. In the series of able and thoughtful papers presented here, prominent men have discussed the evils of the present laws and some of the reforms which should be made in them. We all appreciate fully the ultimate value of these studies; but we are also painfully aware of the fact that discussion of this kind has been going on for a quarter of a century without any other effect than a steady increase in the mass of printed records stored on library shelves. In order to get any practical result we Gust induce an indifferent government at Washington to act, and to do this we must unite in pushing some practical plan whereby it may act in a simple and effective way and with the least possible amount of criticism or opposition. The actual question before us is not whether the mining laws are bad; for their evils and absurdities are not only beyond discussion but also beyond the resources of a temperate and dignified vocabulary. It is not what particular changes ought to be made; for it is premature to make . specific recommendations until there is some one to listen to them. Moreover, we all know that there are wisdom and experience enough available, and awaiting that time, for the creation of a code which would be a model to the mining world. The practical question now is, how to obtain the revision; and since the American Mining Congress has of late restricted its attention to this phase of the problem I wish as one of its representatives here to present its views upon the matter.

This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. Results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates are discussed. CRUSHED stone classified as limestone comprises about 70 pct of the crushed concrete aggregate and roadstone produced in this country, and the product has amounted in the recent past to about 97 million tons per year, valued at more than $123,-000,000.' Therefore an evaluation of the properties of rocks classified in these statistics as limestones and an ability to predict their behavior as aggregate in portland cement concrete are matters of considerable economic consequence to producers and consumers of aggregate. This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. It also points out certain results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates. The problems encountered in efforts to explain the behavior of limestones, dolomites, and related rocks as concrete aggregate lie on the frontiers between the ignorance of the geologists and the ignorance of the engineers. The mineral composition and textures of the rocks have not been adequately explored and described, and the effects of mineral composition and texture on the performance of aggregates have been worked out in only a few cases. There are instances of unsatisfactory performance and some generalizations of those experiences. There are many more examples of satisfactory performance than of unsatisfactory, but there is practically no published information as to why a particular aggregate was satisfactory in a specific use. There are all too few investigations of undeteriorated concrete; more is known about the pathology of concrete than about its normal structure and aspect. As part of the investigation of aggregates, the classification of rocks is not an end in itself, but is a step toward recognition of properties expected to influence the behavior of aggregates in their intended use. Rock of any type may perform well or poorly as concrete aggregate, depending on the physical condition of the rock, its physical and chemical properties as compared to those of the matrix in which it is placed, and the circumstances under which the concrete is exposed. Some classification and descrip- tion of the limestones is necessary to distinguish subgroups whose members will probably behave in similar ways and to evaluate the group as a whole. The group name, limestone, includes and tends to conceal the identity of rocks that have a very great range in chemical and mineralogical composition, structure and texture, conditions of deposition, subsequent history, and suitability for use as concrete aggregate. All the rocks classified as limestones include one or both of the most abundant rock-form-ing carbonate minerals, calcite and dolomite, as major constituents. Carbonate rocks is a more descriptive and more accurate group name than limestone, which has generally been used to include dol-omitic or magnesian limestones and dolomites as well as calcitic limestones. Classification and Description of the Carbonate Rocks The question of names to be applied to the carbonate rocks may appear academic, but it is of practical importance as long as there are specifications for aggregate that result in acceptance or rejection of rocks by name and as long as failure to make distinctions among the carbonate rocks leads to misunderstandings of their properties and of what may be expected of them in performance. Materials included in production statistics as limestone and tested for concrete aggregate as limestone range in fact from calcareous shale and calcareous or dolomitic sandstone and argillaceous limestone and dolomite to calcitic limestone and pure dolomite and to rocks close to calcitic and dolomitic marble. To take a simple example: consider two manufactured coarse aggregates, both dense and unweathered, one composed principally of crystalline calcite and the other of crystalline dolomite, but both known as limestone. If each is used as coarse aggregate in a standardized concrete mixture with the same fine aggregate used in both cases, made into concrete specimens, and tested in accelerated freezing-and-thaw-ing, the test results will probably be quite different, because of the differences in internal bond and thermal properties between the two aggregates. As long as both aggregates are called limestone, the test results cannot be explained, or used except in a very limited way; if the aggregates are distinguished as limestone and dolomite and the consequent differences in texture and thermal properties are recognized, the results are reasonable. Recently the producing branch of the petroleum industry has shown a considerable and growing interest in the quantitative determination of the water, oil, and gas content of cores as it relates to estimation of reserves, to providing a basis for judging as to the feasibility of applying various secondary-recovery and pressure-maintenance processes, and in general to the operation of producing properties. For years it has been known that oil, gas and water coexisted in the pores of many semidepleted oil measures. It is now generally believed that oil-bearing beds contain connate water in amounts varying up to 50 per cent of the pore space. However, only lately has reliable direct evidence of the extensive occurrence of connate water in oil sands been published. Very little work has been done to ascertain the effect of this water on the productivity and ultimate recovery of oil from wells. It was the intent of this research to study the influence of interstitial water on the flow of oil through unconsolidated sands, with the hope that the results could be applied qualitatively to the flow of oil in underground reservoirs partly saturated with water. Obviously, ultimate recovery estimates based on the void volume of the reservoir will be in error unless a correction is made for the volume of water that occupies a portion of the effective pore volume of the reservoir. Evaluation engineers in the past have applied arbitrary saturation and recovery factors that may inadverently have compensated for the failure to consider specifically the water content. Nevertheless, the evidence available indicates that these factors need revising if each is to be independently correct and truly representative. Although the fact that the connate water renders part of the pore volume of the reservoir incapable of containing oil is of primary importance to the operator, it is also to his interest to know to what extent the presence of varying amounts of interstitial water influences the permeability of the sand to oil.

IN 1947 a large low grade deposit of uranium was located in the northwest corner of Saskatchewan, in the Beaverlodge property of Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. Most of the values occur as thin seams and as coatings on other minerals, and the ore, which is light and friable, is not amenable to the usual gravity methods of concentration. The acid leaching process developed to retreat the company's Port Radium tailings was also impractical, as the percentage of carbonates is high and the percentage of sulphides relatively low. Construction of the mill building and installation of equipment, both scheduled for 1952, awaited selection of a satisfactory ore dressing process on or before Oct. 1, 1951. An extensive research program on dressing of ores from the Ace mine therefore was undertaken by the Mines Branch in Ottawa, a research team at the University of British Columbia, and an ore dressing group at the company's Port Hope refinery. Pilot plant operations were conducted at the Ottawa plant of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. under the general direction of C. S. Parsons, consultant on metallurgy and ore dressing for Eldorado. In mid-September, having compared results of the several research programs, Dr. Parsons recommended a process employing a carbonate or basic leach. He reported that, while the chemistry of the process had been proved, engineering of the flowsheet was incomplete, and he suggested that under normal conditions further pilot plant work at the Ace mine might be profitable. However, since this would involve a delay of 12 to 18 months in bringing the property into operation, he recommended that design of the concentrator proceed immediately. Concentrator capacity was determined by two considerations: 1) the amount of ore then available and 2) the expectation that continued improvements would be made in the ore dressing process as a result of the intensive research being carried out by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. This mine is situated upon the western slope of the Meadow Valley mountains, about 70 miles by road from the present end of the railroad-track, which is at Uvada, on the UtahNevada boundary. This boundary-line marks fairly well a certain change in type of scenery from western Utah to eastern Nevada,—from a region in which the desert valleys predominate over the mountain ranges to one in which they are in about equal proportion. The railroad from Salt Lake City runs somewhat W. of S., for the most part along the bottom of the ancient Lake Bonneville. The latter part of its present course follows the axis of the southern arm or bay of that lake, now known as the Escalante desert. Along this bay, its line is a mathematically straight one, with no perceptible change of level for two " tangents " of more than 30 miles each, varying but a few degrees in direction.
