The solid miscibility gap between CaO and "FeO" in the system CaO-"FeO" in contact with metallic iron gradually closes as MnO is added as a third component. On the liquidus surface of the system CaO-"FeO"-MnO, this situation gives rise to a boundary curve which originates in the bounding system CaO-''FeO", proceeds a short distance into the composition triangle of the ternary system, and then vanishes. A new approach has been used to follow the course of this boundary curve. It is shown that the curve vanishes at a much lower temperature and at much lower MnO contents than has been inferred previously. The oxides CaO, "FeO", and MnO together with SiO2 are the major components of the slag phase formed in the basic oxygen process. Hence, the system CaO-"Fe0"-MnO is of considerable technological interest. In addition, the system is theoretically interesting. The three oxides above all have sodium chloride structure. The size differences among the cations are such that in the bounding "binary"* systems CaO-MnO and "FeO"-MnO complete solid-solution series are formed,1,2 whereas in the system CaO-"FeO" there is only limited mutual solubility in the solid state,3 see Fig. 1. Hence, a solid miscibility gap exists in a part of the "ternary"* system Ca0-"Fe0"-Mn0, and a liquidus boundary curve originates at the peritectic point, point a in the insert in Fig. 1, in the system CaO-"FeO", extends a certain distance into the ternary system, and then vanishes. Very little quantitative information on the system Ca0-"Fe0"-Mn0 is available in previous literature. Fischer and Feischer4 sketched isothermal sections at 1600° and 1700°C, and estimated that the vanishing boundary curve extends to approximately 1650°C and a composition of 42 wt pct MnO. The work to be described in the following was aimed at locating experimentally the "vanishing" liquidus boundary curve, determining its end point, and deriving representative isothermal sections below and above the temperature of the end point of this curve. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The phase relations were determined by the well-known quenching method. (For a description of this method as applied to oxide systems, see the original paper of Shepherd, Rankin, and wright.5) Prereacted oxide mixtures of desired compositions were contained in iron crucibles and heated in a vertical tube furnace in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. After equilibrium was judged to have been attained, the samples were quenched to room temperature, the phases present were identified by microscopic and X-ray examination, and total iron oxide contents were determined by chemical analysis. "Fisher Certified" reagents (MnCO3, CaCO3, Fe2O3, and Fe) served as starting materials. The calcium carbonate and ferric oxide were heated in air at 400° and 800°C, respectively, for 24 hr prior to use. Manganese oxide was prepared by decomposing the carbonate in a graphite crucible in hydrogen atmosphere at 1000°C. The product was ground under acetone to -100 mesh. The iron powder was used directly without any preparation. Dicalcium ferrite was used as a starting material for some mixtures. It was made by mixing some of the above prepared CaCO3 and Fe2O3 in proportions corresponding to the formula 2CaO. Fe2O3. This mixture was then fired in air for

ONE LAW cannot he evaded, the economic law of supply and demand. Silver, like any other commodity, is subject to this law; and its price in the long run is determined by existing conditions. I say "in the lone run because at times silver has appeared to mope contra to basic coalitions. Such movements, however, are, occasioned by the market's attempt to anticipate changes in these governing conditions. If the expected changes materialize then the new market level is justified, but if they do not then the market will revert to its previous status, A striking example of such a move occurred in November when the price advanced over 70, in ten days and then in the next two weeks lost more than it had gained. The reasons for this advance were that the speculative element interpreted certain events as favorable to silver namely, England suspension of the gold standard, higher shat prices, and the Chinese-Japanese crisis. When these expectations proved unjustified the inevitably, elapse followed became the governing conditions had not channel.

In creep testing, material is subjected to a constant load, preferably at a constant temperature, and its rate of deformation is measured. The method of loading can be of various types but in this paper only creep testing under tensile load will be considered. The ordinary tensile test is essentially a comparison test in conditions that frequently hear little or no relation to those under which the test material is to be used in service. The purpose of creep tests is to measure the strength of the test material at slow rates of deformation that more nearly approach the rates realized in service. One purpose of this paper is to illustrate that the creep test, in addition to its value as a service test, is superior to the ordinary tensile test as a sensitive tool for the comparison of certain metals in investigative testing. The other purpose is to describe equipment having distinctive features of design that make it especially suitable for such tests. Representative data obtained with this equipment on a group of rolled zinc-base materials are given. These data are compared with those from practical comparison tests of the creep type on weatherstrip fabricated from the same group of materials. The comparison illustrates the value of the fast creep test and of the equipment. The Equipment The creep equipment consists essentially of a tank containing a constant-temperature oil bath in which the creep of 14 specimens, loaded by means of levers, is measured by means of one movable extensometer. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 illustrate its general construction and appearance. Constant-temperalure Oil Balh.—A common constant-temperature bath requiring only one temperature-controlling equipment for a number of specimens was chosen as the best means of fulfilling the requirements of low cost and compactness. In addition, this allows the testing of a group of specimens under identical temperature conditions.

A practical mathematical treatment is presented for the determination and control of conveyor belt acceleration, particularly for conditions of starting where vertical curves are involved. A typical sample problem is analyzed, with required calculations, to clarify the procedure. THE part that acceleration plays in starting a belt conveyor and its effect on belt conveyor design are well understood in a general way. Its practical importance is easily overlooked, however, and under some conditions, it is absolutely necessary to give the problem of acceleration detailed study. Most handbooks on conveyor belting design adequately present basic data for the determination of acceleration values. This paper will only attempt to present practical thinking and a convenient method of treatment of acceleration in belt conveyor design. Mathematical Analysis In working out the various problems of conveyor belt acceleration, the starting point, as presented by the handbooks, is the familiar formula of "force of acceleration is equal to the mass times acceleration." By expressing these fundamental quantities in terms of belt conveyor design, it is possible to arrive at the unsuspected conclusion that the acceleration time for horizontal belt conveyors is independent of the load, and instead, dependent upon the belt speed, the type of drive arrangement and drive pulley, and the idler coefficient of friction. The mathematics leading to this conclusion are shown in Table I, which has been prepared to show this derivation. While at first the conclusion just given may not seem to be reasonable, further reflection indicates that obviously the type of drive pulley and the type of drive do affect materially the tension in the conveyor belt, and thus, as clearly shown, the time of acceleration is dependent upon the factors mentioned. Inasmuch as all of the factors except time are predetermined by the belt conveyor design, it becomes relatively easy to establish the accelerating time and to reduce further this time determination to a simple graph from which the time in seconds can be read directly. Such a graph is given in Fig. 1. The table appearing on Fig. 1 should be explained further. For a given belt speed, the time of acceleration can be expressed as a percentage of the belt speed. The time of acceleration is also dependent on the drive arrangement, and changes in the drive arrangement consequently change the time of acceleration. It further follows that for a given belt speed, the time expressed as a percentage of that belt speed also changes with the type of drive. Obviously then, it becomes possible to graph the percentage of speed for .each type of drive against the belt speed and accelerating time, after which, for a given belt speed and type of drive, the time can be read directly in seconds. Two constants were established for Fig. 1, the first one being the limiting of the maximum acceleration tension to 35 pct of the full load operating tension in the belt. The purpose of this is to limit the total tension imposed upon the belt during the acceleration period to 135 pct of the full load operating tension, 'which is the amount required to start or breakaway the fully loaded belt conveyor from rest. The other constant is the friction factor used for the idler equipment, which has been established as 0.022. For installations where it is necessary to establish the values of acceleration, invariably high grade idler equipment is used, and it has been established from field experience that 0.022 for the idler friction factor is amply conservative. The use of this friction factor for idlers must be tempered with judgment, of course, for occasions will arise where more power than indicated is required to start, even with the very best of equipment, such as low temperature operations that tend to congeal the grease in the bearings and thus produce additional friction drag. An inspection of the table in Fig. 1 affords a convenient rule of thumb method for determining the acceleration time, which conveniently can be 5 pct of the belt speed in seconds. The 5 pct of belt speed figure is close to the average for most types of drives. In using Fig. 1 it must be emphasized that it applies accurately to horizontal belt conveyors only.

The operating principle of the classifying cyclone has been described often but some special aspects of the cyclone receive further clarification here. In addition, several uses of the classifiers are summarized and made clear by means of practical examples. In coal and ore washeries, the washing cyclone is widely used for the separation by specific gravity of sizes up to about 12 mm. This application has lately been extended to the separation by specific gravity of particles up to about 50 mm. This use makes special demands on the construction and wear resistance of the cyclone. The sieve bend, a development of the Dutch State Mines which is less well known than the hydrocy-clone, is dealt with at some length. The sieve bend is an apparatus designed for wet screening. Attention is given to the variables influencing the performance of the sieve bend. Hydrocyclones are now so widely applied that it would be difficult to find an industry not, directly or indirectly, using them or knowing how to use them since publications on this subject abound.1-3,5,9-11,13-15 However, because of the large number of variables influencing the operation of classifying cyclones, it is not entirely possible to calculate the results of this type of cyclone. Therefore, a number of lesser known variables will be discussed here along with some special applications of the classifying cyclone. FACTORS INFLUENCING CYCLONE CLASSIFICATION Shape of Particles: The shape of particles may cause a much coarser classification than the one expected, considering the sieve analysis and the cyclone dimensions chosen. This was clearly shown by feeding a mixture of spheres and disks in water into a cyclone. The spheres were 0.36 mm diam and the disks, 3 mm diam and 0.03 mm thick. These dimensions were chosen in order that the disks and spheres might have the same rates of fall under gravity. Both spheres and disks had a specific gravity of 1.05. The results obtained with these particles in a cyclone are summarized in Table I. Test No. 2 shows that the catch of spheres was

At low sodium-oleate concentration, calcite flotation is substantially improved by the use of CO2 instead of air. Electrophoretic mobility measurements indicate that carbonation results in the accumulation o f positive charge on the calcite particles. This heightens adsorption of oleate anion, an effect confirmed by tracer-technique measurements. Fundamental insight is obtained as to how CO2 serves better as an activator than some mineral and organic acids, how oxalic acid acts as a depressor, and why the influence of Ca++ ions, liberated during carbonation, on flotation behavior of calcite is insignificant and sometimes adverse.

To construct a yieldable metal prop of demonstrated practicability has been the aim of the writer of this article for a period of years. Such a prop is herewith described; it involves a yielding principle not previously utilized, to the best of the author's knowledge, in any of the numerous types of props which are in use in Europe and England or on record at the United States Patent Office.' No attempt will be made in this paper to analyze the situation in regard to the economics of timber substitutes. Suffice it to say that shortage of suitable timber combined with high freight rates has already presented a problem in some mining districts, and in the relatively near future will probably demand considerable attention from the mining industry as a whole. In order to understand the problems involved in the design of timber substitutes for underground support, it will be well to review briefly the fundamentals of ground subsidence and of the action of timber as props. The forces encountered in the support of mine openings are not computable. As a rule subsiding ground moves slowly; but it moves with an irresistible force. The only way to be certain of stopping ground movement is to completely fill up the openings below such movement. This is, obviously, an impracticability from the mining standpoint. The ordinary procedure is to put in timber to hold up the loose back and permit the natural arch above to resist its own loading. Under these conditions the timber rigidly supports the loose; but if the natural arch fails, the timber is then called upon to resist this additional pressure. Usually it cannot do this. The result is a crushing of the supports. Efficient timbering is that which will last just long enough to complete in safety the mining operations necessary to extract the ore. Wood has a cellular structure. It has great longitudinal strength for its weight. Further, it possesses the ability to maintain a high percentage of its strength while it is being crushed. In other words, it rigidly supports loads up to its capabilities and then continues to sustain

The dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions was studied by determining the time required for the solvents to dissolve gold leaf. Minute traces, even 0.5 ppm, of sulphide ion retard the dissolution of gold, and this behavior cannot be accounted for by the presently accepted hypotheses involving oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation. On the other hand, traces of the salts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium considerably accelerate the dissolution. The beneficial effect of lead is dependent upon the pH and cyanide ion concentration of the solution. ALTHOUGH cyanide solvents are used very ex-x*. tensively for the recovery of gold from ores and concentrates, the normal rate of solution of the precious metal as determined by Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley,1 and others2 is less than about 3 mg per sq cm of exposed gold surface per hour, corresponding to a corrosion depth of approximately 1.5 microns (0.00006 in.) per hr. Although the slow rate may be increased to some extent in certain cases, as, for example, when the the gold is partially imbedded in iron pyrites,3 the leaching operation is generally the most time-consuming step of the cyanide process. Frequently it is necessary for the leaching solvents to remain in contact with the ores for 50 to 200 hr in order to dissolve all of the gold particles.' Not only does the slow solution rate cause some increase in the capital costs, but the cyanide consumption also may be increased because of vaporization of hydrocyanic acid and secondary reactions with minerals such as malachite (CuCO3 • Cu(OH)2), and pyrrhotite, which often are associated with gold. It is not surprising that numerous attempts have been made to accelerate the dissolution of gold in cyanide solutions. Experimental Gold Leaf Test: The gold leaf test was apparently originated by M. Faraday, who, by means of it, discovered that dilute cyanide solutions would dissolve gold readily in the presence of oxygen. The usefulness and reliability of the test have been discussed elsewhere.5,6 Essentially, the method consists of determining the time required for 5-ml portions of cyanide solvents to dissolve squares of 23 carat gold leaf, 0.5 cm on edge, when shaken in 10-ml test tubes with the solvents. The weight of gold leaf per test was 0.051 mg as determined by the direct weighing of a leaf 8.6x8.6 cm (weight = 15 mg) and measuring the area of the test sample (0.25 sq cm). Gold leaf is of remarkably uniform thickness.6 Since gold leaf, like native gold, contains small amounts of copper and silver, the results are comparable with those one might expect in cyaniding gold ores. As six or more tests can be made simul- taneously, the relative efficiencies of the solvents can be evaluated readily. All dilute solutions of lead, bismuth, thallium and mercury salts were prepared by the ordinary dilution method used by chemists. Our C.P. sodium cyanide and buffering reagents had no detectable amounts of either sulphide ion or heavy metals. Soluble Sulphides in the Cyanide Process: The action of soluble sulphides is of interest in the study of the dissolution of gold in cyanide solutions. That gold ores which contain compounds of arsenic and antimony often are not amenable to direct cyanide treatment is well known, and it said that arsenic and antimony are "cyanicides."7 It is commonly believed that part of the sulphur content of such ores is soluble in alkaline solutions to give sulphide ion, which reacts with the free cyanide content of the leaching solutions to form inert thio-cyanates or reacts with the dissolved oxygen to form sulphites or sulphates.8 A purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that sulphide ion may behave in a manner that cannot be explained by either the oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation theories and to prove directly that concentrations of sulphide ion which cannot be detected even by colorimetric methods may retard the dissolution of gold.

DESPITE the fact that American brimstone production has increased 2 times since the prewar period 1935-1939, the demand for sulphur exceeds the supply. To alleviate this situation efforts are being made to increase the production of sulphur and bring the shortage to an end. The most important developments are being undertaken on the Gulf Coast. One new brimstone mine has been put into operation and three others are being developed. These projects are expected to account for a large part of the additional sulphur production now anticipated for the free world.'.' Except for a small amount of byproduct sulphur from sour natural gas and refinery gases, American brimstone is produced by the same process devised by Frasch 60 years ago, consisting essentially of the injection of superheated water at about 325°F into sulphur-bearing formations through wells which are drilled from the surface by standard oilfield methods. Sulphur deposits vary in depth from a few hundred feet to 2500 ft from the surface; in a typical deposit the sulphur occurs as crystalline aggregates in porous limestone and gypsum in concentrations varying from 5 to 40 pct, the thickness of the formation ranging from a few feet to several hundred.3 The deposits are usually surrounded by formations impermeable to the flow of hot water, the top and sides being enclosed by impermeable sediments and the bottom by dense impermeable anhydrite. As the hot water leaves the well bore, it percolates through the formation and transmits its heat to the rock and sulphur. When the sulphur reaches 240°F it melts, separates from the rock, and flows through the hot channels downward to the bottom of the well. Here it is freed from incoming water and from formation water, which saturates the porous rock, by gravity separation, liquid sulphur being 1.8 times as heavy as water. It then is pumped to the surface in a relatively pure state, 99.5 pct or better. Chief contaminants are organic impurities, such as petroleum residues, which are soluble in sulphur and tend to discolor it.' Sixteen deposits of commercial magnitude have been discovered in the Gulf Coast area. Five of these deposits have been depleted and abandoned with production totalling more than 26,886,000 tons. Eight properties are operating and have produced 65,875,-000 tons to Jan. 1, 1952, for a total Frasch-type production of 92,761,000 tons. Three new deposits are under development. Aforementioned deposits are listed in Table I. Each of these deposits has been found in the cap-rock overlying shallow intrusive salt plugs or domes and buried in several hundred to as much as 2500 ft of sediments. All salt domes do .not contain sulphur; only 16 sulphur deposits have been found in a total of 231 salt domes which are known to exist in the Gulf Coastal states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Ten of the salt domes lie in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Additional offshore domes may be found, but their value as a sulphur potential is questionable owing to the great hazard and high cost that can be visualized at these exposed locations where depths of water reach 50 ft. DESPITE the fact that American brimstone production has increased 2 times since the prewar period 1935-1939, the demand for sulphur exceeds the supply. To alleviate this situation efforts are being made to increase the production of sulphur and bring the shortage to an end. The most important developments are being undertaken on the Gulf Coast. One new brimstone mine has been put into operation and three others are being developed. These projects are expected to account for a large part of the additional sulphur production now anticipated for the free world.'.' Except for a small amount of byproduct sulphur from sour natural gas and refinery gases, American brimstone is produced by the same process devised by Frasch 60 years ago, consisting essentially of the injection of superheated water at about 325°F into sulphur-bearing formations through wells which are drilled from the surface by standard oilfield methods. Sulphur deposits vary in depth from a few hundred feet to 2500 ft from the surface; in a typical deposit the sulphur occurs as crystalline aggregates in porous limestone and gypsum in concentrations varying from 5 to 40 pct, the thickness of the formation ranging from a few feet to several hundred.3 The deposits are usually surrounded by formations impermeable to the flow of hot water, the top and sides being enclosed by impermeable sediments and the bottom by dense impermeable anhydrite. As the hot water leaves the well bore, it percolates through the formation and transmits its heat to the rock and sulphur. When the sulphur reaches 240°F it melts, separates from the rock, and flows through the hot channels downward to the bottom of the well. Here it is freed from incoming water and from formation water, which saturates the porous rock, by gravity separation, liquid sulphur being 1.8 times as heavy as water. It then is pumped to the surface in a relatively pure state, 99.5 pct or better. Chief contaminants are organic impurities, such as petroleum residues, which are soluble in sulphur and tend to discolor it.' Sixteen deposits of commercial magnitude have been discovered in the Gulf Coast area. Five of these deposits have been depleted and abandoned with production totalling more than 26,886,000 tons. Eight properties are operating and have produced 65,875,-000 tons to Jan. 1, 1952, for a total Frasch-type production of 92,761,000 tons. Three new deposits are under development. Aforementioned deposits are listed in Table I. Each of these deposits has been found in the cap-rock overlying shallow intrusive salt plugs or domes and buried in several hundred to as much as 2500 ft of sediments. All salt domes do .not contain sulphur; only 16 sulphur deposits have been found in a total of 231 salt domes which are known to exist in the Gulf Coastal states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Ten of the salt domes lie in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Additional offshore domes may be found, but their value as a sulphur potential is questionable owing to the great hazard and high cost that can be visualized at these exposed locations where depths of water reach 50 ft. In four years war I have had practically no news. Burch wrote several times but several of his letters were lost and so mine. I believe I even wrote to you. Much has changed since our last days in Telluride; here and there many have disappeared. Of myself I will tell you in a few words: for a year I was in Cadore(?), where I had the good luck to do to the others what they wished to do to me, and had good luck on my side. Then I went to Macedonia for 5 months, did little fighting but lost my faithful fellow officer and companion.

ALUMINUM and magnesium plants in the United States underwent enormous wartime expansion which made many wonder if ghost plants would result when industry swung back to a peacetime basis. Production capacity of primary aluminum ingots was stepped up from 150,000 tons annually to about 1,150,000 tons; magnesium production increased from 2500 tons in 1936 to nearly 200,000 in 1943, with a production capacity of some 300,000 tons. Not only was primary metal production enlarged but also the capacity of prime fabrications such as castings, forgings, extrusions, and sheets was correspondingly increased. In mid-December it was estimated that production of primary aluminum ingots in the United States in 1946 will be about 410,000 tons while consumption will be about 500,000, close to half of the wartime consumption. The 1946 estimated consumption of secondary aluminum is 200,000 tons. The critical shortage of soda ash is hindering production of primary metal, and the outlook for an early relief of this shortage is dark.

A metallurgical process to be economically successful must be carried on under proper conditions of control and equipment. The question of equipment is always of primary importance. In the distillation process for the recovery of zinc by retorting, the retort is the all-important piece of equipment. Each retort in a working blóck must function as a separate unit. Over-all block efficiency is the result of the ability of the individual retort to withstand the severe conditions of operation for a maximum period of time. Therefore retort manufacture has been an ever present problem with the operator of a zinc-retorting plant. During recent years the zinc-plant operator has been faced with rapid changes in the character of the ores and concentrates. Operating costs have increased as a result of the introduction of the flotation process and the amount of flotation concentrates to be handled. To counteract increasing costs, the operator has found it necessary continually to attempt heavier loading of retorts, until a 45 to 50-lb. charge per cubic foot of retort space has become common practice. Heavy loading has brought about severe firing conditions, which, in turn, have emphasized the necessity for further improving the quality of the retort. Increasing percentages of detrimental impurities in the retort charges have also added to the operator's difficulties. Amarillo Silicon Carbide Retorts At the Amarillo plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. a retort made of a suitable plastic clay grogged with silicon carbide has been found to best meet the present-day requirements. Retorts of this kind have been in use at Amarillo for 8 years and have shown an average furnace life of approximately 175 calendar days. The Amarillo retort is cylindrical in shape and after burning is approximately 83/4 in, inside diameter by 60 in. over-all length. The wall thickness is 136 in., except for the butt of the retort, which is approximately 2½ in. thick. The retort mud has a shrinkage of 3 per cent, or approximately % in. per foot. The silicon carbide retort after being properly dried weighs about 211 lb. When the retort is fired and ready to go into use the weight decreases to approximately 203 lb.

PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

INTRODUCTION Mount Isa Mines Limited operates a major mining complex at Mount Isa in northwest Queensland, Australia. The location is arid and remote, some 600 miles distant from the nearest port of Townsville on the eastern coast (Fig. I). Current mine production is 6 million long tons per annum comprising 3.8 million tons of copper ore and 2.2 million tons of silver-lead-zinc ore. Copper ore production is scheduled to increase to 5.8 million long tons per annum by 1973 and a new silver-lead-zinc mine is being developed at Hilton, 13 miles north of Mount Isa. The Mount Isa and Hilton orebodies occur in a single stratigraphic member, termed the Urquhart Shale. This shale is conformable with several other sedimentary formations striking north-south and dipping approximately 65º west. The silver-lead-zinc orebodies occur in bands conformable with the shale bedding and tend to be of tabular shape, varying in width from a few feet to nearly 200 ft. The copper orebodies occur in breccia bodies, locally known as "silica-dolomite", within the Urquhart Shale and tend to be more irregular and massive with widths up to several hundred feet. The detailed geology is described by Bennett (1 2). At present, production comes almost entirely from underground operations with only about 25,000 tons per year of carbonate ore from open pit operations. The mining method used in the copper orebodies is sublevel open stoping with pillar recovery by pillar blast before stope filling or by sublevel caving after stope filling. A large primary sublevel caving operation was also carried out until recently in one of the orebodies. The wider lead orebodies are mined by sublevel open stoping, with or without pillar recovery, while cut and fill stoping is used in the narrower orebodies. Details of the mining methods are given by Davies (3). The company's interest in open pit mining stems from a large open pit which was mined out in 1965 and a further large open pit planned for future production. In addition, the company is currently evaluating several large ore deposits in Australia and New Guinea. All of these orebodies would be mined by open pit methods and rock mechanics studies of slope stability are now a standard feature of all open pit evaluations.
