The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. A RESPONSIBLE steel executive recently declared that scrap shortages, despite fantastic prices reaching up to $50 per ton, are responsible for the loss of 140,000 tons of steel a month and that in March 1947 alone 25 more steel furnaces could have been operating were it not for scrap scarcities. His answer to this serious situation was to ask for a speedier flow of scrap and also abolition of Government control over pig iron distribution. It would be more logical, perhaps, if an answer to this growing problem of scrap deficiency were sought within the steel industry itself. As long ago as 1933, L. B. Lindemuth, a consulting steel metallurgist, warned the steel industry that a shortage of scrap was inevitable and that beyond 1938, adequate supplies for open-hearth furnaces could not be expected. The outbreak of war, with consequent phenomenal demands on the industry, accelerated production of steel and further worsened the scrap situation. Today we are suffering from a condition which could have been prevented had the industry been more far-seeing and provided for an inevitable contingency. However, better late than never, and measures can now be taken to alleviate permanently scrap shortages in the future. This can be done by greater utilization of heavy sinter which experience proved is an excellent substitute for scrao and lump ore.

"WELFARE…Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years and both the operators and their employees are deserving of much credit for the efforts put forth to better living, working, educational and receational conditions in most of the mining camps of the state.In the older metal mining camps of Utah, where the towns are incorporated and independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is pre¬sented for the companies to exercise efforts looking towards improved welfare conditions than is the case of camps located on company ground and under the full control of operators.Even in such camps, however, as illustrated in Bingham, the companies can do much to better welfare conditions. In this camp the Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1 920 in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Gemmell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartments have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club, erected and equipped at a cost of $1 75,000, was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper Company employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp."

Twice in the past two years and in two widely separated localities-one near Williamsville, Mo., and the other in the Allard Lake district of Quebec- the Contract Drilling Division of the Longyear Company has experienced perplexing difficulties in drilling granitoid igneous rocks. The rocks in both places are characterized by appreciable amounts of feldspar intimately intergrown with quartz particles of microscopic dimensions. The disappointingly slow rate of advance and the exceptionally high bortz loss, obtaining during the life of these two projects, are ascribed largely to the resistance to abrasion of these two minerals when arranged in this intergrown pattern. Whether all intergrowth-bearing igneous rocks would offer extraordinary resistance to bit progress cannot be stated with assurance on the strength of these experiences alone. More data on diamond drilling this sort of material in a number of localities are needed before any generalizations can be made safely.

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING deals with the production, transportation, and refining of crude oil. Refining is chiefly the work of the chemical engineer; production, that of the petroleum engineer. Production engineering only is discussed in this paper. Petroleum production engineering is closest related to and, in fact, is a branch of mining engineering. Formerly, many petroleum engineers were trained as mining engineers or mining geologists. The profession is related also to mechanical and civil engineering to about the same extent that mining engineering is. Petroleum production draws upon the mechanical branch for drilling and pumping machinery and upon civil engineering for the construction of transportation lines, water supplies, and water-disposal plants. Fundamentally, petroleum production engineering deals with the removal of the oil from the reservoir rocks, just as mining is concerned with the removal of ore. The process of oil production demands a specialized knowledge just as distinct from mechanical and civil engineering as mining is distinct from operating a Diesel engine. Even though the chief tools of the petroleum engineer are the drill and the pump, these may be of little avail, and certainly not efficient, if their selection and use is not based on a knowledge of the physical chemistry of oil, the geology of the formations, the structure of the oil sand, the hydrodynamics of the reservoir, and the interrelation of all these many factors.

THE Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since I930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. HISTORY The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known. since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Consolidated's phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 ¾ miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. GEOLOGY The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. I. DESCRIPTION. MONAZITE is one of the minerals which, for a long time, was considered rather rare in its occurrence, but, upon a commercial demand arising for it, prospectors and engineers soon located large deposits of it in the Carolinas and Brazil, and the supply has always been able to meet the demand. During 1908 further sources of supply of monazite have been discovered and developed in Idaho. North and South Carolina, however, are the only States that have thus far put any monazite on the market. Monazite is essentially an anhydrous phosphate of the rare-earth metals, cerium, lanthanum, and didymium (Ce, La, Di)PO;. There is nearly always present a varying but small percentage of thoria, ThO2, and silicic acid, SiO, which are very probably united in the form of a thorium silicate, ThSiO4 Some monazites contain but a fraction of a per cent. of thoria, while others have been recorded that showed the presence of from 18 to 32 per cent. ; but the majority contain from 3 to 9 per cent. of this oxide. It is the presence of the thorium oxide that gives the monazite its commercial value. The analysis occasionally shows also the presence of other constituents, as the yttrium and erbium oxides, zirconia, alumina, magnesia, lime, iron oxides, manganese oxide, and titanium oxide. Monazite is light-yellow, honey-yellow, reddish-, brownish-, or greenish-yellow in color, with a resinous to vitreous luster, and is translucent to subtransparent. It is brittle, with a conchoidal to uneven fracture, and is from 5 to 5.5 in hardness, and from 4.64 to 5.3 in specific gravity. NO FEATURE of the annual meeting is considered more important at Institute headquarters than the assembly of delegates from the various local sections and divisions. There the president of the Institute and other officials may learn at first hand what the members are thinking and doing in every part of the country, and the delegates, in turn, may find that head- quarters is not a group of more or less cold-blooded New Yorkers whose primary function is to send out annual bills for $15. This year, the section and division delegates required three sessions to thresh out the matters of common interest: Monday morning and afternoon and Thursday afternoon. They were also guests of the Institute at the Directors' dinner on Tuesday night, and at the Directors' meeting afterward.

On March 18, 1964, the 52,000 dwt ore carrier M/S Houn Maru called at the port of Coquimbo, Chile, on its maiden voyage to take iron ore to Japan. This marked the first time a vessel of this size ever arrived at Coquimbo, and the event promises to drastically accelerate henceforth iron ore exports from Coquimbo province. This was made possible by the use of a versatile shiploading system recently installed by Cia. Minera Santa Fe. Coquimbo has no mechanized loading facilities other than six conventional 5-ton cargo cranes. Limited space on shore further complicates the stocking problems. To make the best of what is available, a meticulously organized semi-hand-loading system has been developed through the years.

THE Engineering Education Committee of the Institute convened at the Engineering Societies Building on Feb. 18, .1929, with. E. A. Holbrook, dean of the Schools of Mines and Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, in the chair. STATISTICAL' STUDY OF STUDENTS IN MINING The first paper, a statistical study of the students enrolled in courses leading to a mining degree in 40 institutions, was presented by H. D. Keiser,, assistant editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal; who gave a brief outline of an article he was about to publish in ?that journal?. The complete article appears in the issue for March 30; 1929: To avoid repetition the results are summarized as follows: A request was sent to 42 institutions which give courses in mining' for the number of students enrolled as freshmen; sophomores; juniors, seniors and special students in mining for the years 1925-26, 1926-27, 1927-28, 1928-29. Two of these colleges replied that there were no students in mining. Students' enrolled in courses in metallurgy, geology and engineering, other than mining, were excluded from the statistics:. THE melting department is the heart of the foundry. From it clean metal flows to the molding floor, in the right quantity, at the right time and at a sufficiently low cost-or, if not, the foundry fails to thrive. Since it is our purpose here to discuss present-day melting practice in the foundry, it may be well at the start to emphasize the wide differences in foundries and the conditions under which they must operate in order to reach the goal stated in the first paragraph. In every foundry, large or small, jobbing or captive, the same factors must be dealt with but they are of varying consequence and must be dealt with in varying ways in different foundries. Particularly in the nonferrous industry, there is so wide a variation in the composition of alloys used and in the character of castings made that no one type of furnace, nor any one method of operation, can be expected to produce the best results at all times. The present discussion will not attempt to include all nonferrous metals. It is intended to cover only the copper-base alloys in which copper is the dominant element, most of which are commonly known as brass or bronze. The discussion is further limited to the melting of these copper-base alloys for use in sand-casting foundries. Die-casting plants, the brass-rolling mills and certain other metal industries have melting problems peculiar to those industries, which will not be considered here. The following considerations are elemental in all foundries and are listed in what is believed to be the relative order of their present-day importance: I. The melting department must meet the foundry's requirement for dean, fluid metal, of specified composition and purity, at a temperature suitable for the work the foundry has in hand. This is the prime consideration in any foundry, at any time, anywhere. 2. Working conditions surrounding the melting furnaces and attending their use must be good. 3. The cost of molten metal at the mold must be as low as possible. 4. The operating characteristics of the furnaces must be sufficiently flexible, to meet normal variations in foundry requirements. 5. The operation and maintenance of the melting equipment must not require more skill and experience than is available in the particular foundry in question. METAL QUALITY It is not a function of the melting furnace to refine or improve the quality of the metal but simply to melt it without impairing its quality. Good practice requires, therefore, that care must be taken to supply the melting department with metal of inherently good quality, assured by specification or otherwise, having all the properties necessary to produce the castings desired. An alloy contains a number of primary elements, which must be present in definite proportions if the castings made from it are to have the desired properties. If the castings are made to a customer's specification, this will state the range within which these principal elements (for example, copper, tin, lead and zinc) are permitted to vary.

minerals of different specific gravities. It is simple in construction, easily operated, capable of treating large quantities in a short time, and highly efficient under various conditions. The question, whether the material to be jigged has first been sized, determines the two principal methods of jigging. Jigging preceded by close sizing, generally known as the Continental or German system, involves a more or less elaborate series of screens or trommels, with attendant cost for installation, operation, and repairs. Jigging without sizing, known as the English system, is, according to Munroe,1 a development of the hand-jigging formerly employed in Cornwall . and introduced by English miners to this country." In its simplest form, the method consists in jigging an ore-mixture previously crushed to some maximum size (although, in some cases, even this preliminary is omitted) oil a relatively coarse sieve, and then jigging again on a filler sieve, the material passing through the first sieve and bedding. While many modifications have been necessary to adapt it for use in mills of large capacity, where hand-work was necessarily, replaced by machines, the principle remains the same; the fact that the English system has been successfully employed, both in this country and abroad, is well known; and arguments have been made for its efficiency and applicability in a wider sphere than it has occupied hitherto. II. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS. The fact that treating a mixture of minerals under jigging conditions increased the amount of mineral saved, or, as Professor Richards aptly terms it, 1 ?the extra jig-catch," has long been known. To account for this fact a number of theories have been proposed. The work of Rittinger2 in this field has, for many years, been a classic in the literature of ore-dressing. For the purposes of my present paper, however, the work of two American investigators, Prof. H. S. Munroe and Prof. R. H. Richards, is chiefly concerned. Professor Munroe has given the results of an elaborate series of experiments,3 and his deductions, based largely oil theoretical grounds, of this work. The metallurgical history of Republic has been completely reviewed in a paper presented at a previous meeting of the Spokane Local Section by Professor Thomson;' therefore, the present paper will be confined to matters directly pertaining to the San Poil mill: When I came to Republic last fall to look over the situation there was a plant in operation successfully treating the tailings from one of the earlier mills in the camp. I refer to the mill of the Rathfon Reduction Co. This mill was operating in accordance with modern cyaniding practice, and I was given to understand that the work was very satisfactory and profitable, else it would not have been continued as long as it was. At that time I obtained much metallurgical information of value from Harry W. Newton, Superintendent of the mill of the North Washington Power & Reduction Co. I took a number of samples from the San Poil mine, with the view of determining if Mr. Newton's experience with the ores from the other mines applied to the San Poil ores. I made a large number of tests under a variety of conditions, and found that it was possible to extract as high as 98 per cent, of the values from San Poil ore by the laboratory-tests when the ore was pulverized to 200-mesh and treated with a solution of a strength of 5 Ib. of KCN to the ton. The ore deposit of the Iron King mine occurs in a group of steeply-dipping metamorphosed eugeosynclinal volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Precambrian age. Within this sequence, the ore deposit lies at the contact of a unit made up of rhyolitic tuff and interbedded andesite and a structurally underlying series consisting of andesitic tuffs, minor rhyolitic tuffs, and argillaceous sediments. Field evidence suggests that these rocks have been overturned. The ore deposit is made up of a series of overlapping, conformable or bodies consisting of massive pyrite and associated lenses of massive quartz. These contain recoverable amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. A parallel zone of copper mineralization occurs within the hanging-wall rocks. The deposit is considered to belong to a large and important group characterized by mineralogical composition and the lithology and structural type of the host rocks. Evidence regarding the origin of the deposit is reviewed, and it is concluded that the ore bodies were formed through the agency of volcanic hot springs on, or near, a submarine surface of deposition

ADOLPH GREINER, Seraing, Belgium :-I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have cor-rected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix II. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p; in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. MR. THREE case histories from professions other than engineering will serve to introduce ideas basic to this discussion. Case (1) Date, about 1900. A young man, B. D. from a three-year graduate course in a prominent divinity school, was for two years a successful pastor of a small church; then friction over theological matters arose with a fundamentalist deacon of the "Bible belt" type. He resigned, returned to his university for a four-year medical course, interned for two more, and thereafter was successful and apparently happy as a physician. We may assume that he was converted in early adolescence and vowed himself to service as a minister. Acceptance of his announced career by parents, friends, and teachers plus his own determination confirmed his choice until illiberal criticism threatened his usefulness and he awoke to the fact that his inner needs were not along the direction in which inertia and his conscience had constrained him.

Discussion of the paper of IRVING A. PALMER, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1447 to 1460. L. S. AUSTIN, Salt Lake City, Utah.-With the union of the Guggenheim interests and the American Smelting& Refining Co. in 1900, competition among the lead-smelting companies appeared to have been largely eliminated. This condition prevailed for but a short time, owing to the erection of smelteries by competing companies. Naturally, as competitors, the older companies endeavored to keep improved methods to themselves, not realizing, it would appear, that such knowledge could never be bottled up, but would drift into the common field of practice. Of late it has begun to be felt that more is gained than lost by adopting a franker and more open policy. The line, however, is drawn in. giving details of costs, which, fully known, it is felt, would be taken advantage of by a rival. As Mr. Palmer says, steady and substantial progress has been made, and latterly, I may add, the improvements have been radical. Sintering by the Huntington-Heberlein method or with Dwight-Lloyd machines has effected an important saving over reverberatory roasting, the cost being, say, 50 to 75c., as compared With $2 per ton by the older method. Moreover, the .large use of a sintered product has resulted in doubling blast-furnace tonnage. However, the change has not been an unmixed blessing, as in the machine roasting little time can be given to the breaking up of the blende, and it has been impossible to decompose largely the zinc sulphide, so detrimental in later blast-furnace treatment. The satisfactory roasting of the blende is still an unsolved problem. Nor is this all. For the best reduction it has been found that a part of-the change should be crude (unsintered) ore, indicating that the already fused material is only too ready to change to slag, thus lessening the opportunity for better reduction.
