The requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet and the dry. In each process, a stone storage is the first requisite of a successful plant. This storage place may handle the stone before or after crushing; its capacity may vary from two to three days' up to several months' supply, but it should be so designed that it can be filled as desired by the chemist and drawn at such points as will give a mixture of the various kinds of stone coming from the quarry and a reasonably uniform material going to the mill. The size of the storage place and the method of handling should be varied according to the nature of the material.

MOST commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evaluated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0.03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. MODERN mining is based on drilling--everything else stems from that. U. S. and Canadian mining companies and suppliers of mining equipment are constantly seeking new techniques and tools for increased drilling efficiency. Ultimate goal is increased bit-against-rock time. Just how important their efforts are can be seen through a legitimate extension of available statistics. In Canada some 70 million ft of drilling per year is required. While the number of feet actually drilled in the U. S. is unknown, it is possible to compare U. S. and Canadian mineral production, excluding oil and coal. In the U. S. mineral value was $4200 million and across the border $836 million. Taking into account the number of drilled feet required to produce Canada's total, the U. S. total would be 365 million ft in 1953. A saving of 14 per ft would reduce over- all metal and nonmetal mining costs some $3.65 million per year. This does not take into account other indirect savings. Methods have changed and there have been structural and metallurgical advances in blasthole practice in the last ten years. The Editors of MINING ENGINEERING in the articles on the following pages present the most significant innovations coupled with results in the field. Environment plays an important role in selection of materials and equipment -but while unanimity does not exist throughout the industry in reference to drilling problems, a definite trend is evident. For the story of that trend read the articles on the following pages.

When some materials are ground dry in a ball mill, a stage of comminution is reached at which the finely divided particles begin to adhere to the balls and to the mill lining. As grinding progresses, a coating accumulates upon the grinding media, which tends to cushion the impacts and thus retard reduction of the material. and finally becomes so thick that all grinding ceases. At this stage, the characteristic noise produced by the grinding media during normal mill operation changes to a dull, muffled sound. In most instances, the formation of the coating marks the practical limit of size reduction. Industrial requirements for fine grinding frequently meet with this obstacle, and the tendency in many commercial operations to grind materials to a higher degree of fineness than formerly makes the solution of this problem an important one. The phenomenon is of far greater importance, therefore, than the limited amount of research and technical discussion devoted to it implies. In order to learn more about the coating of different materials when ground dry to a high degree of fineness, certain laboratory tests were made from which it was found that different materials form coatings at widely different size distributions. It is probable that most materials will coat if they are ground fine enough; the exceptions have inherent lubricating qualities, like coal and graphite. In general, the softer materials tend to coat at coarser sizes than the harder or more brittle materials. Limestone, as an example, will coat more readily than quartz, even though limestones of different- texture and composition exhibit great differences in coating potentialities. Various materials were tested in the laboratory to show the variation in coating qualities. It was found that in most tests quartz must be ground to a fineness that would permit it to pass through 325 mesh before coating became markedly detrimental to the grinding operation. Siliceous rocks, however, tend to coat more readily than quartz. Granite, which is composed essentially of feldspar, quartz and mica, has been found to start coating at about 92 per cent through 200 mesh, and feld-spathic minerals alone usually show a tendency to coat at the same fineness. Barite has been ground in the laboratory to a fineness of 99 per cent through 325 mesh without showing serious coating of the grinding media. Gypsum coats readily. Apatite and phosphate rock usually tend to coat. Hematite usually coats, although when mixed with charcoal it does not do so. In testing the carbonate rocks and minerals, it has been found that burned magnesite, dolomite, and dolomitic limestone coat, whereas calcite and calcined calcite do not coat so readily. DUE to wartime secrecy restrictions a large part of the technical information developed by government and industrial laboratories was withheld from distribution. Much of this information has now been released or "declassified" and reports of technical work carried out during the war in allied and enemy countries are also becoming available. Information on the latter subject has been augmented by the work of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Corps of the U. S. Army. Through the Joint Chiefs of Staff, rep¬resentatives of this Corps co-operated with the British Combined Intelligence Observations Subcommittee, and some of the observations were made by combined personnel of both groups. The U. S. Government has undertaken the indexing and abstracting of all of this information in the Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, a weekly bulletin which appeared first early in 1946. Other publications, such as the Bulletin of the British Iron and Steel Institute and The Metals Review of the American Society for Metals, provide abstracts of domestic and foreign magazine articles and papers presented to technical societies. However, they do not cover the industrial and government reports recently released by the Government nor the reports of the Army investigators hence the new bibliography is a welcome addition to our metallurgical library.

IN the study of the structure or the properties of a series of alloys or nonmetallic compounds, it is often advantageous to express the com-position not as percentage by weight, according to which the material is always made up and analyzed, but as the atomic percentage of the two constituents. The conversion from the one to the other is repre-sented by the formulas: 100A 100x Y x 100 ? x/A A [1] A+ B x + A/B(100-x) X _ 100yA 100y [2] yA+(100-y)B or y+A(100-y) where x and y are the weight and atomic percentages respectively of the element of atomic weight A, and (100 - x) and (100 - y) are the per-centages by weight and by atoms respectively of the element of atomic weight B. While calculations according to these formulas are simple, they are' time consuming if several conversions have to be made. In 1931 Water-man' constructed a nomograph for performing the conversion, but this did not permit an accuracy greater than about 1 per cent to be obtained in the neighborhood of 50 per cent. Olander2 has proposed a graphic method simpler than Waterman's and one that gives a uniform precision throughout the entire scale. The possible accuracy is about 0.5 per cent of the whole, depending on the size and accuracy of the coordinate paper used. Recently, Hermann3 has described a slide rule for making the calculations. THE lead smeltery at East Helena, Mont., controlled by the American Smelting & Refining Co. since 1899, has been in continuous operation for the past 25 years. Most of the old smelting and roasting practices have been superseded by newer and more modern methods, but on account of the difficulties involved in changing the original construction, some of the methods in use of handling materials are not the most modern. This plant, however, is particularly interesting as being one of the few essentially lead smelteries in the United States. At Federal, Ill., Collinsville, Herculaneum, and possibly other places, similar work is being done, but it is doubtful whether any of them produces as' much lead as the East Helena plant, whose monthly production averages 6,500 tons. The situation, 5 miles east of Helena, is convenient to both the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads, while the electric power is obtained from Canyon Ferry, 12 miles east on the Missouri river. Local quarries supply the requisite amount of lime rock, Which the contracts require to be crushed to 5 in. Of the 450 men on the monthly pay roll, a census showed 200 Austrians, 110 Americans, and 30 Italians, the balance being made up of miscellaneous nationalities. The ore supply is mainly derived from the Coeur d'Alêne mines in Idaho, and consists of crude ore, coarse and fine concentrates, middlings, and slimes. About one-half of the total output of the Coeur d'Alêne camp is sent to East Helena. An average analysis of these ores gives approximately 40 per cent. lead and 11 per cent. sulphur. Local shipments, varying, from month to month, are mostly highly siliceous gold and silver ores carrying little lead. Small shippers, leasers of old mines, and prospectors are very numerous throughout Montana, and it is the policy of the company to encourage these men by every possible means, including the free sampling and analysis of their ores and aid in the development of their mines and prospects whenever their results show promise.

The removal of heavy metal compounds from a synthesized waste cyanide solution is achievable by a precipitation-flotation method. However, the differential separation of constituting metals by this method was thought to be very difficult. The present author found that addition of ferrous salt to the synthesized waste cyanide solution of cadmium and copper can modify the separation characteristics of these metals. In this paper, the separation of cadmium from copper in the synthesized waste cyanide water by the precipitation-flotation method is discussed. This differential flotation uses ferrous salt as a precipitant and sodium oleate as a collector. Based on a series of fundamental flotation tests, actual differential flotation tests were made. The separation of cadmium from copper in the synthesized waste cyanide water was found to be satisfactory. This method can be effective for the removal of difficult-to- separate colloidal precipitates from liquids by the sedimentation method, provided the applicability of this method to the separation of the other metals is promising. This consists of the intensive studies which have been conducted at author's laboratory.

Homestake's mining methods today are controlled to a con¬siderable extent by that which has been done in the past. The two main operating shafts were begun m 1878 and 1896 respectively, so that the location of shafts, loca¬tions of all the drifts on the upper levels, and a great deal of stoping was done before any of those now connected with the mine had anything to do with it In this paper is described the general plan of development. A table shows percentage of total production mined by the different methods in recent years. Average daily produc¬tion for several years now has been about 3850 tons milled. On Aug. 5 and 6,1918, and Mar. 26, 1919, the writer made an investigation of the mine-water neutralizing plant at the Calumet mine of the H. C. Frick Coke Co. The object of this plant is to develop a process of treating the water pumped from the mines so that it may be rendered suitable for use at the power plants of the mines and also at the coke ovens; at the same time, eventually producing a byproduct which will have enough commercial value to provide a sufficient revenue to place the plant on a self-sustaining basis. The Calumet mine is situated in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pa., on a branch of the southwest branch of the Pittsburgh Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It is about 6 mi. (9 km.) southeast of Greensburg, the county seat of Westmoreland County. The coal, which is the Pittsburg or Connellsville seam, lies at a depth of about 200 ft. (60 m.) and is brought to the surface by means of a shaft. The output of the mine averages 200,000 tons of coal annually, all of which is made into coke, either at the ovens, at the mine, or at byproduct ovens. There are 260 coke ovens at the mine. The continued development of the coal fields of Pennsylvania and the increased use of electric power in the operation of the mines has brought the problem of an increased water supply for the plants to the attention of the coal operators. This is especially true in the Connellsville coking region, where large quantities of water are used in quenching the coke at the ovens. Many of the streams receive the drainage from the mines; and as this water is highly acid and contains sulfur in various forms, some method of treatment is necessary to render it suitable for use at the plants of the mines. With this end in view, the H. C. Prick Coke Co., about 4 years ago, installed at its Calumet mine a plant for experimental purposes, in an endeavor to develop a process that would provide a maximum amount of suitable water at a minimum cost. From a purely technical point of view, the result of these experiments has been encouraging. The company is now endeavoring to place the plant on a commercial basis.

THE initial meeting on Mining Methods* opened at 10 o'clock Monday morning with Scott Turner as chairman and W. Spencer Hutchinson as vice- chairman; about 60 attending. After preliminary announcements Theodore Marvin was called on for his paper,, entitled "Rock Tunnel Methods," which has been appearing serially in The Explosives Engineer. Marvin read the introduction and called attention to the account of one or' two particularly' interesting projects, such as the. Brooklyn water supply tunnel. E. D. 'Gardner, Char1e.s S. Hurter, L. D. Lamont and Spencer P. Howell took part in the discussion, Howell commenting on the fact that, in one case cited, misfires had occurred through detonator wires 'coming in contact with the case of an unapproved flashlight, .,: and that all flashlights should be approved.

MANY investigators, in their discussions, have reasoned that the ductile-brittle transition in iron could be explained by the intrusion of cleavage into the normal slip process. The purpose of this note is to apply the laws of critical normal stress for cleavage and critical shear stress for slip to explain the orientation and temperature dependence of the ductile-brittle transition in body-centered cubic metals. It will be found that within a certain temperature range, single crystals tested in tension will cleave or slip, depending on their orientation. The use of sheet and strip metal has increascd rapidly during the last few years and manufacturers have been called upon for an ever-increasing tonnage, better drawing quality, and better surface. The automobile industry is probably the most insistent in striving for a better product and a desire to reduce costs. Confronted by these demands, the mills have directed their efforts toward the delivery of material. Their personnel has been occupied largely with the problems incident to production, as any increase forced the use of new sources of raw material with their problems. These problems, combined with those met in the daily routine, have demanded immediate attention, with the result that the standardizing of heat treatments, quality, or temper, etc., have been neglected. Considerable work in standardizing has been done by many companies, but no acceptable method has been developed. The following method, therefore, is given with the hope that some method that can be accepted by the manufacturers and users may be developed. The problem of selecting a material with such properties that the losses in processing are a minimum is interesting and difficult. A description of the properties required is likewise difficult, largely because of loose terms. Another handicap is the number of methods of testing which have not been standardized and concerning which little information is available. In the selection of drawing or forming stock, it is advisable to eliminate as many variables as possible; consequently the method of testing the material is of the utmost importance. The method should be rapid and comparatively easy of application, as it is more important that a large percentage of the stock be tested with reasonable accuracy than that

The Homestake Ledge or Lead was discovered by Fred and Moses Manuel on April 9, 1876. They recovered a small amount of gold from the quartz outcrop, but, unfortunately, they were prospectors not hardrock miners. Their claim was sold to a group of experienced California mining men in 1877. These mining men incorporated their holdings as the Homestake Mining Company. This was the beginning of one of the greater gold mining enterprises of the Western World. Metallurgical operations progressed over the years from an eighty- stamp grinding circuit using amalgamation for recovery to the more complex circuit of today. The Homestake Mine, today, is an underground mine with the deepest winze reaching the 8,000-foot level. The ore is hoisted to the surface by two primary shafts, the Ross Shaft and the Yates Shaft. See Figures 1 and 2. It is crushed in three-stage crushing plants located in the headframes. From here, it is trammed to the mill fine- ore bins by electric locomotives. The Lead grinding plant milling circuit, known as the South Mill, receives ore from the crushing plant at minus 112 inch (Figure 3). This material is dumped into overhead fine-ore bins from five- ton rail cars. The fine-ore bins have a live capacity of about 3,700 tons. The South Mill bins can also be fed by a conveyor system which reclaims ore from an 80,000-ton capacity stockpile. This stockpile is built up from peak mining production periods and available surface low grade material. It is then reclaimed during low mine production periods. The grinding circuit at the South Mill consists of four rod mills in open circuit followed by four ball mills in closed circuit. Three of the rod mills are 6-foot by 12-foot Marcy's. The other is

AS an outgrowth of its spodumene recovery operation at Kings Mountain, N. C., Foote Mineral Co. has been recovering a heavy mineral by-product. Foote leased this idle plant in 1951, reactivated it, using a new spodumene recovery process, and purchased plant and properties in October 1951. While the operation at Kings Mountain is primarily concerned with the production of spodumene concentrate, pilot plant work determined that the pegmatites also contained heavy minerals including cassiterite. Plans were made to recover the heavy minerals as a by-product and the flowsheet incorporated these facilities when the mill was modified for the new spodumene recovery process. The orebodies consist of spodumene, feldspar, quartz and mica. Apatite, tourmaline, and beryl are present in small quantities. The wall rock is pre- dominantly hornblende shist. The heavy minerals, including cassiterite, columbite, pyrrhotite, monazite, pyrite, and rutile represent about 0.2 pct of the ore. The fine-grained heavy minerals are disseminated throughout the dikes, apparently unassociated with the spodumene. The pegmatites are quarried and secondary breakage is by mud-capping and block-holing. Power shovels load into trucks transporting the ore to a coarse ore bin. A Telesmith 10x36-in. apron feeder delivers the ore to an 18x36 in. Traylor Jaw crusher adjusted to discharge -3 in. product to a primary conveyor. The conveyor delivers to a 4x5-ft Tyrock single deck vibrating screen using 3/4 in. cloth. The screen undersize is elevated to the crushed ore bin. Screen oversize goes to an Allis-Chalmers Hydrocone Crusher fitted with 4 in. concave and set to deliver approximately 66 pct minus 3/4 in. The crusher discharge returns to the primary conveyor. The crushing and screening installation has a capacity of about 60 tons per hour. Spirals The crushed ore is delivered at a rate of 350 tons per day to two 6x8-ft Hardinge Pebble Mills, equipped with 20 mesh Ton-Cap trommel screens. The screen oversize is pumped to a 12-in. hydroclone for primary desliming. The hydroclone underfl spirals. There is no heavy mineral loss in the hydro-clone overflow. The spirals bank consists of eight 5-turn Model 24-A Humphreys Spirals. The top port and the last four ports of each spiral are blanked, the remaining nine port splitters are adjusted to remove about 5 pct feed weight. The heavy mineral rougher concentrates are upgraded on a Deister Overstrom table. The spiral concentrates contain approximately 4 pct heavy mineral, and the spiral reject, which goes to another section of the plant for spodumene recovery, contains about 0.03 pct heavy mineral. There is an interesting feature in the spirals installation. An adjustable splitter mounted on the discharge boxes splits out a mica fines product containing very little heavy mineral. The mica product is cleaned by spiralling and screening. Thus the spirals recover two products; mica, and a heavy mineral rougher concentrate. Table Treatment The rougher spiral concentrate goes to a Deister Plato table, modified to receive a Deister-Overstrom No. 6 rubber cover with sand riffles. The table is operated with a 5/8 in. stroke, 270 strokes per minute, and a slope of 1/2 in. per ft from feed to tailings side. There is no slope adjustment from motion to concentrate end. Wash water consumption is relatively high, since the large spodumene grains tend to report with the fine heavy minerals. A middling band about 4 in. wide is maintained in order to produce clean concentrate. The middling, representing about 10 pct of table feed, is recirculated by air-lift. A band of concentrate grade coarse spodumene occurs just below the middling. This is removed and delivered to concentrate storage. The table tailing, containing approximately 0.7 pct heavy minerals, is returned to the spodumene feed preparation circuit. The heavy mineral table concentrates are approximately 45 pct cassiterite, 33 pct columbite, 14 pct pyrrhotite and 8 pct monazite, together, with some rutile, pyrite, and copper from blasting wire. Concentrate is collected at 24 hour intervals. and dried. If the concentrate remains in wet storage appreciably longer surface oxidation takes place which seriously interferes with the subsequent magnetic separation process. About 150 lb of heavy mineral concentrate is produced per 24 hours and shipped to the company's plant at Exton, Pa. for final separation into tin and columbium concentrates.

The object of this paper is to make a brief comparison of the outlines of several forms of ports for steel-melting turnaces, in reference chiefly to the proper mixture; of the gas and air, and to the direction in which the flame is thrown down into the interior of the furnace. In the illustrations on the accompanying plate, Fig. 1 shows a form of port designed by M, Pernot, of St Chamond, France. This is used with the dome roof preferred by him fur the revolving bottom that bears his name. From No. 1 has been derived No. 2. This is shown on the plans of Mr. A. L. Holley, and from them three large furnaces have been built and put into operation by the Springfield Iron Company. Fig. 3 shows an outline proposed by Messrs. Richmond & Potts for the Pernot furnace. In this the ports are brought in under an arched roof of nearly the ordinary form, instead of over the top of the roof, as with the dome of M Pernot, Fig. 4 shows a furnace as built by Krupp of Essen, Prussia, for fluid refining, or " washing "-—to use the briefer French term. in this the gas and air come into contact in broad sheets one above the other, Fig. 5 shows the form used by Messrs.
