The effect of mining in the red-ore mines of the Birmingham district has been observed for some time, but, except in a few localities, little difficulty has been experienced from disturbance of cover. Cave-ins near the outcrop and fracturing of the surface at greater distances are the most pronounced manifestations of disturbance, while limited areas at points distant from the outcrop and under greater depth of cover have actually subsided. were it not that the orebed is overlain by one or more water-bearing formations, the fracturing or settlement of the surface would not be serious; but because of these formations, fracturing of the top rock may in itself be of sufficient importance to warrant the adoption of protective measures. Further, the collapse of pillars over a wide area may develop squeezes that, if not controlled, may jeopardize the integrity of the mines and necessitate a change in development, from slopes to vertical shafts, at a much earlier period than is now contemplated. Drainsge in these mines has been discussed in papers on mining practice,' but the fact that water, varying from 0.16 to 3.46 and averaging 1.43 times the amount of ore mined, has to be pumped from the mines daily, indicates the importance of the problem and the advisability of making a thorough investigation of the source of mine water, its mode of entry into the mines, its effect upon mining conditions, and consideration of means of improving the conditions.

Electrochemical measurements have been made of the activity of oxygen in copper and its alloys with silver and tin at 1100" and 1200°C. The galvanic cell used was Pt, Ni + NiO/solid ellectrolyte/[O] in metal, cermet, Pt The results do not support any of the equations so far designed for predicting the activities of dilute solutes in ternary solutions from activities in the corresponding binaries. If, however, a quasichemical equation is used with the coordination number set to unity, agreement between observed and calculated activities shows that this empirical relationship can be useful over a fair range of conditions. SEVERAL solution models have been proposed for predicting the activity coefficients of dilute solutes in ternary alloys from a knowledge of the three binary systems involved. Alcock and Richardson1 have shown that a regular model, and a quasichemical model,' in which the dissolved oxygen is coordinated with eight or so metal atoms, can reasonably predict the behavior of both metal and nonmetal solutes when the heats of solution of the solute in the separate solvent metals are similar. But when this is not so, neither model gives useful predictions unless coordination numbers of one or two are assumed. Wada and Saito3 subsequently adopted a similar model to derive the interaction energies for two dilute solutes in a solvent metal. Belton and Tankins4 Rave proposed both regular and quasichemical type models in which the oxygen is bound into molecular species, such as NiO and CuO in mixtures of Cu + Ni + 0. However, their models have only been tested on systems in which the excess free energies of solution of the solute in the two separate metals differ by a few kilocalories. Ope of the reasons why more advanced models have not been proposed is because few complete sets of data exist for ternary systems in which the solute behaves very differently in the two separate metals. For this reason measurements have been made of the activities of oxygen dissolved in Cu + Ag and Cu + Sn. Measurements on both systems were made by means of the electrochemical cell, Pt, Ni + NiO/solid electrolyte/O(in alloy), cermet,Pt [1] The activity of oxygen was calculated from the electromotive force and the standard free energy of formation of NiO, which is accurately known.5 Before investigating the alloys, studies were made of oxygen in copper to test the reliability of the cell and to check the thermodynamics of the system. Of the previous studies those by Sano and Sakao,6 Tom-linson and Young,7 and Tankins et al.8,7 have been made with gas-metal equilibrium techniques; those by Diaz and Richardson,9 Osterwald,10 wilder," Plusch-kell and Engell,12 Rickert and wagner,13 and Fischer and Ackermann14 have been made by electrochemical methods. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus employed was the same as described previously,9 apart from slight modification. The molten sample of approximately 40 g was held in a high grade alumina crucible 1.2 in. OD and 1.6 in. long. The solid electrolytes were ZrO2 + 7½ wt pct CaO and ZrO2 + 15 wt pct CaO; the tubes 4 in. OD and 6 in. long were supplied by the Zirconia Corp. of America. They were closed (flat) at one end. In one experiment with Cu + O, both electrolytes were used in the cell at the same time. The reference electrodes inside the electrolyte tubes consisted of a mixture of Ni + NiO. They were made by mixing the powdered materials and pressing them manually into the ends of the tubes, with a platinum lead embedded in them. The tubes were then sintered overnight in the electromotive force apparatus at 1100°C. By sintering the powders inside the tubes (instead of using a presintered pellet9) better contacts were obtained between the electrolyte, the powder, and the platinum lead. Troubles arising from polarization9 were thus much reduced. The electromotive force was measured by a Vibron Electrometer with an input impedence of 1017 ohm; the temperature was measured with a Pt:13 pct Rh + Pt thermocouple protected by an alumina sheath. The couple was calibrated against the melting point of copper. The cermet conducting lead of Cr + 28 pct Al2O3, previously found to be satisfactory9 for use with Cu + 0 was also found satisfactory with Cu + Ag + 0 and Cu + Sn + 0. Superficial oxidation was observed, but it did not interfere with the working of the cell. The reaction tube containing the cell was closed at each end with cooled brass heads and suspended in a platinum resistance furnace. The tube was electrically shielded by a Kanthal A-1 ribbon which was wound round it, and the ribbon was protected by a N2 atmosphere between the furnace and the reaction tube. The cell was protected by a stream of high purity argon which was dried and passed through copper gauze at 450°C and titanium chips at 900°C. All the metals used were of spectrographic standard. We have shown in the preceding paper that practically all natural oxides of iron contain a determinable percentage of ferrous iron, and in many cases the percentage approaches that in magnetite itself. Some of these oxides are true homogeneous solid solutions. Others are not homogeneous, and can be separated magnetically into fractions. The nature and cause of this inhomogeneity in certain special cases form the subject of the present paper. Magnetic FRactionation of Oxides of Iron The magnetic fractionation of a sample of oxide can be conveniently carried out by powdering the material very fine, and exposing it at various distances from the poles of an electromagnet. The magnet that we used was specially designed1 to give a strong field together with a steep gradient outside of the poles. It is set in a frame, with the pole pieces directed downward. A glass plate can bc adjusted at various distances beneath the poles. If the fine iron oxide powder is placed just beneath the glass plate, successive portions of the powder are picked up by the magnetic attraction and are caught against the glass plate, the most magnetic portions being taken up at the greatest distance from the poles. Some natural oxides can thus be separated into several fractions of different magnetic susceptibilities. In the metallurgical treatment of most metallic sulphides it is usually necessary to carry on a roasting-operation. In some cases the raw ore will have to be roasted; in others the intermediary product, matte, produced in smelting the ore; again, both ore and matte may have to be subjected to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Most metallic sulphides, when given an oxidizing-roast, pass through the state of sulphate before they are converted into oxides. All metallic sulphates are completely decomposed by heat, with the exception of those of lead and bismuth, but the temperatures at which decompositions take place vary with the metals. Some metallic sulphates are converted directly into oxides, others first form basic salts. Alkali-earth sulphates show a behavior similar to that of metallic sulphates, while alkali sulphates do not part with their sulphur trioxide even at elevated roasting-temperatures. The older data on the decomposition of metallic sulphates by heat are only approximations. Thus Kerl' gives the order in which metallic sulphates are decomposed with increasing temperatures as (Ag2, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, Pb) SO,. More recent statenlents give definite temperatures and modify the formerly accepted order of decomposition. But the temperatures given by various observers do not agree. The reasons for this are to be found mainly in the method and manner of carrying out experiments. Four methods have been used: 1. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society, but the name has now been changed. to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees, of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which have equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. YEAR 1951 has been bright for the mining geologist. He has arrived after struggling for a generation or two to sell his wares through service to the operator, the mine superintendent, and the manager. But as he establishes himself on the operating front, he is faced with even greater challenges; namely, the development of basic geologic principles governing ore-forming processes and the occurrence and distribution of mineral deposits. These principles are needed to guide his ever-widening search into new areas. He must now stimulate the interest, confidence, and imagination of the mining executive and layman in fostering the research essential to expand rapidly the basic science of geology and its more specific applications to the mining industry. The hallowed time-tested tools of the prospector and the industry are no longer adequate. New basic data, principles, and ideas are needed to guide industry's exploration. The entry of Government into exploration, by lending money to prospectors and operating companies to partly finance exploration, is one of the major events of the year. This was one of the activities for which the Defense Minerals Administration was established in the Department of the Interior. DMA was staffed largely with men from industry, but the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey have acted as its technical advisors and have provided its field staff. Since the start of this work in May 1951 to November 19, 1951, the DMA has approved 208 exploration projects while denying 318 others. The contracts involve about eleven million dollars worth of exploration, of which Government's share is about sixty percent. A few contractors have already made discoveries and are into production to repay their loans; others have completed their projects without making a discovery. In November, the DMA was split into two successor units. The Defense Minerals Exploration Administration was set up in the Interior Department to carry out the exploration program. The Defense Materials Procurement Agency was organized as a separate agency to carry out the other functions of the former DMA, as well as general strategic materials procurement. The strategic materials group of the Economic Cooperation Administration was transferred to DMPA in order to centralize the procurement from foreign sources into one agency, although the authority and scope of activities of this group have not been announced as of the middle of December. The DMA-DMEA-DMPA programs are making large demands upon the technical manpower of the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines. It is still too early to evaluate with confidence the productiveness of this diversion so far as the immediate and long-range effects are concerned. Many of the individuals associated with these programs, as well as others in the industry, are convinced that from a long-range national viewpoint, the regular programs of both the Survey and the Bureau equal or even exceed in importance the current emergency mineral activities of these two agencies. Uranium Uranium continued to be the glamour-girl metal of the mineral industry, and at the request of the Atomic Energy Commission uranium and thorium were included in the DMA exploration program. Industry's intensive prospecting and mining activities in 1950 were further expanded early in 1951 when the Atomic Energy Commission announced an increased price schedule and a new bonus payment

The Ti-Al system certainly merits the investigative attention it has been receiving and this latest contribution by Blackburn is therefore to be welcomed. The titanium-rich end of the phase diagram shown here, as well as the diagram by crossley,17 Clark et a1.,18 and Tsujimoto and Adachi,29 reveal no other intermediate phase than Ti3A1, although a previous work by Ence and Margolin20 had reported an additional intermediate phase. Since then, Buerger Precession pictures of single crystals of 10.5, 11.5, and 12.5 wt pct A1 were made at New York university21 and the extinctions were found to be typical of a D6h a Ti structure. Some superlat-tice spots and/or streaks suggesting the presence of an Mg3Cd structure, i.e., Ti3Al, were also found. Since these specimens had been quenched from the y region20 and had revealed a Ti, it was concludedz1 that y does not exist and the structures interpreted as m + y could not be so considered. The absence of normal two-phase behavior in these structures had been indicated in the paper. Accordingly, the two-phase region y + 6 becomes a + Ti3Al and there is some agreement between the results of Blackburn and of Ence and Margolin20 as to both shape and existence above 900°C of an a + Ti3Al field. Crossley 17 proposed that Ti3Al is a line compound which decomposes congruently at 900°C. It is difficult to discount entirely the fact that clear two-phase structures, varying in amount with position in the two-phase field, could be detected above 900°C by Ence and Margolin.20 Precipitation during quenching could not have been so regular and the twin-phase syndrome17 does not apply. The heat treatment and quenching technique was essentially the same as was used by Crossley, whereas Blackburn, who used a rapid quenching procedure, also showed a two-phase a + Ti3A1 field above 900°C. If the two-phase field exists above 900° C, it is easy to picture a two-phase field which could account for the data of Crossley below 900°C without invoking a line compound existence of Ti3A1. All that would be necessary would be an 0 + Ti3Al/Ti3Al boundary which curved sharply to higher aluminum contents below 900° C. It is clear that the controversy must be solved by techniques which obtain data at elevated temperatures without quenching. It is conceivable that the difference in width of the a + Ti3N fields reported by Blackburn and by Ence and Margolin is due to the longer annealing times used by the latter investigators. A method was developed to quantify the three mineral species, sphalerite, galena, and pyrite in seven concentrator products. Intermineral effects were studied and a statistical analysis was undertaken to assess the accuracy and reproducibility of the method. The method is both rapid and suitable for plant control purposes. Furthermore, it requires only semiskilled laboratory personnel to carry out all the analyses.

Electron microscope evidence which indicates that TaC may precipitate at random sites in the matrix is presented. Initially the particles are almost spherical and coherent with the matrix. However, as they grow in conditions in which there are insufficient vacancies to relieve lattice strain, the particles rapidly lose coherency in two directions and continue to grow as plates with approximately the full lattice mismatch strain present perpendicular to the plane of the plate. The necessary relief of strain comes from dislocations loops which do not become visible until the later stages of aging. The rapid decrease of apparent strain to low values of appoximately 1 pct at small particle sizes arises not from a complete incoherency but from applying a model wrong for the particle shape and strain distribution. PREVIOUS work has shown that MC-type carbides may precipitate intragranularly in austenitic stainless steel on dislocations,1&apos;2 in association with stacking faults,3&apos;4 and randomly through the matrix,5-7 In investigations of the matrix precipitate by thin-foil electron microscopy, considerable lattice strain has been found to occur around the precipitating phase.7&apos;8 Attempts have been made to evaluate the amount of lattice strain by using the methods developed by Ashby and brown.9,10 Values of the linear strain, much less than the 17 pct theoretical mismatch (for TaC), have been reported; it has been suggested that this is due to either a loss of coherency1&apos; or vacancy absorption which occurs during either the initial nucleation or growth of the precipitate." This report is an extension of earlier work7 that dealt with the precipitation of TaC from an 18Cr/12Ni/ 2Ta/O.lC alloy after it had been quenched from 1300°C and aged between 600" and 840°C. In particular, the shape of the precipitate particles and the amount of strain in the matrix, due to the precipitate, have been studied. The work described here is part of a wider investigation of factors that affect carbide precipitation in austenitic stainless steel," details of which are to appear elsewhere. RESULTS The present investigation can be conveniently split into two aspects of the strain-fields surrounding the matrix particles: 1) information derived from the strain-field which indicates the shape and habit plane of the precipitate particles and 2) the magnitude and sign of the strain-field. The Shape and Habit Plane of the TaC Precipitate. In the early stages of aging twin lobes (normally black F. H. FROES, formerly at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England, is Staff Scientist, Colt Industries, Crucible Materials Research Center, Pittsburgh, Pa. D. H. WARRINGTON is Lecturer, Department of Metallurgy, University of Sheffield. Manuscript submitted November 1, 1968. IMD on white background, i.e., for the deviation parameter, S > 0) that indicate the strained region of the matrix define the position of the particles by bright field transmission electron microscopy. The actual particles were not detected until they were approximately 120Å diam; below this size they were too small to be imaged in the electron microscope. This meant that particle growth that had occurred before this stage had to be inferred from the matrix strain-field contrast. In all cases when diffraction effects were observed from the precipitate particles, a cube-cube orientation relationship (i.e., (llO)ppt Il<llO>matrix and {1ll }ppt {III} matrix) existed between the precipitate and the matrix. From the matrix precipitate particles lying along edge-on {111} planes (e.g., at A, Fig. I), the precipitates are seen to be plate-like with their diameter being roughly 18 times their thickness after 5000 hr at 650°C. However, the exact shape of the particles cannot be determined because of the masking effect of the strain-field contrast. If a dark-field micrograph, using a precipitate reflection, is studied, Fig. 2, a number of the projected images of the TaC particles [on the (110) foil surface] apear to have straight edges parallel to projected f111) planes. Thus, it appears that in the later stages of aging the TaC particles are plate-like with some tendency for the edges of the plate to be bounded by the matrix close-packed {ill} planes (though the general shape of the particles in the plane of the plate is circular and thus the "diameter" of the particles has a real physical significance). It should be noted that the bands of fine discrete particles observed in Figs. 1 and 2 are not the matrix precipitate discussed in this paper but are precipitates associated with extrinsic stacking faults3j4 occurring on (111) matrix planes. **£** ****** \ *x 23 Fig. 1—18/12/2~a/0.1~ alloy. A SHORT time ago I paid a visit to the alluvial gold fields on the tributaries of the Chaudière River in Beauce County, Quebec, in company with A. 0. Dufresne, late manager of the Champs d&apos;Or Rigaud-Veaudreuil, and now Assistant to the Superintendent of Mines of the Province of Quebec. As the conditions under which the gold occurs in this district are not very generally known, and present some interesting features, a brief description of these conditions, and a consideration of the causes which gave rise to them, may be of interest to other mining engineers. During the latter half of last century the country was visited by many mining engineers and geologists, and many references to it may be found in the reports of the Geological Survey of Canada between 1848 and 1911. The most important of these are by J. A. Dresser and J. Keele and the late Robert Chalmers. The Department of Colonization and Mines of the Province of Quebec also published a report with map on the district by J. Obalski. From the earliest times the valley of the Chaudière River formed one of the main avenues of approach to the St. Lawrence in the vicinity of Quebec from the country to the south as far as the seaboard of the States of Maine and Massachusetts. The Indians had a well-known trail along the banks of the stream, and armed troops and foraging parties constantly moved backward and forward along it between Quebec and New England in those insecure times before the ceding of Canada to Great Britain. Even yet the natural advantages of this old military route are recognized, and the government of the -Province of Quebec has now under construction along it a magnificent highway from Quebec to the International Boundary Line, which is to form part of a through highway from that city to Boston; The land along the valley is naturally well suited for agriculture, and about the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries farmers began to go back from the St. Lawrence, and to occupy the higher lands along the upper portions of the Chaudière Valley. This settlement has gone on until now the country is peopled with a prosperous agricultural population.

A theoretical and experimental study has been made of those interactions between holes and electrons which influence the solubilities of donors and acceptors in semiconductors. The major portion of the work concerns the solubility of lithium in silicon doped to varying degrees with boron. This solubility increases with increasing boron content in a manner predicted by theory and exhibits the expected temperature dependence. A qualitative experiment in germanium is described which demonstrates, in accordance with theory, that doping with a donor decreases the solubility of another donor. SEVERAL authors have discussed the possibility that holes and electrons behave like chemical entities and influence the solubilities of ionized impurities, Wagner was the first to invoke this concept in connection with his studies on nonstoichio-metric oxides. The method of decrease in surface activity was used to determine the rates of diffusion of Co" into cobalt and into nickel. Since the absorption curves for cobalt radiation were quite complex under the conditions of these experiments, the effects of geometry and surface preparation on the diffusion results were investigated. The cobalt self-diffusion coefficients obey the equation DCoco = e-61100/RT cm2 per sec. For dilute cobalt diffusing in nickel, DConi, == 1.46 e-/R&apos; cm2 er sec. AS part of the general program to measure the self-diffusion and dilute-solution diffusion rates of the iron-group metals, the diffusion coefficients of cobalt into cobalt and nickel have been measured using the radioactive isotope Co"&apos;. Self-diffusion studies in iron have been previously reported by Birchenall and Mehl.&apos; The technique of measurement used was the decrease in surface activity method described by Steigman, Shockley, and Nix.&apos; It has been determined that scattering of the measured beta radiation by the specimen matrix is significantly influenced by the condition of the surface and the counting geometry. Accurate diffusion coefficients can be calculated from the activity data provided that the specimens have plane diffusion surfaces and that the absorption properties of the emitted radiation are determined under geometrical conditions duplicating with external absorbers the absorption and scattering in a thin film at the specimen surface as nearly as possible. The cobalt used in this research was originally in the form of hydrogen reduced rondels 99.9+ pct pure. The nickel had been prepared by the carbonyl process and was found by spectrographic analysis to contain 0.03 pct Fe, 0.04 pct Co and smaller traces of other metallic elements for a balance purity of 99.9+ pet Ni. Both materials were vacuum melted and cast in rectangular ingots. Specimens 7/8x7/8x1/4 in. were machined from these ingots. The specimens were then ground to 4-0 emery paper and annealed in hydrogen for at least a day at 1200°C. Some of the specimens were used in preliminary experimentation after which their diffusion faces were machined to remove the radioactive material from the previous diffusion experiments. After grinding, the specimens were polished using an electrolytic lapping technique described by Mazia." This lapping was continued until at least 0.005 in. was removed from the diffusion surface. The final surfaces were metallographically smooth except for a few fine scratches caused by the glass cloth. A large percentage of the area was undisturbed as determined by microscopic examination. The grain diameters of the diffusion specimens varied from 0.1 to 5 mm. There were no effects due to grain boundary diffusion in the experiments

The phase behavior of a number of binary systems consisting of parafin hydro-carbons has been determined in recent years. In addition, the composition of the coexisting phases of mixtures of crude oil and natural gas has been investigated.~ However, the latter study did not include information concerning the influence of the concentration of a component upon its distribution between two coexisting phases. Owing to the paucity of such information it was considered desirable to investigate in some detail the composition of the coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system throughout the greater part of the two-phase region at a tempera-ture of 100°F. Information of this nature also permits the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. Method The compositions of the coexisting phases in this ternary system at 100°F. were deter-mined by withdrawing samples from a pres-sure vessel containing a heterogeneous mixture of the three components that had been brought 10 equilibrium by mechanical agitation at the desired pressure and tem-perature. The samples were withdrawn under such conditions that the equilibrium was not disturbed and the composition of each of the phases was ascertained by means of the conventional low-temperature fractionation procedure. The apparatus employed in this investi-gation was nearly the same as that utilized in an earlier study of the methane-pentane system.~ Several minor modifica-tions in the arrangement of the apparatus were made in the interest of simplifying the procedure and avoiding the possibility of condensation in the tubing connecting the equilibrium apparatus with the analyti-cal equipment. The pressures were meas-ured by means of a pressure balance with a precision of 0.5 lb. per sq. in. It is believed that the equilibrium pressure was ascer-tained with an uncertainty of not more than 2 lb. per sq. in., even though small varia-tions in pressure obtained during the withdrawal of the samples. The tempera-ture of the equilibrium equipment was maintained by use of an automatically controlled oil bath. The bath temperature was determined by means of a copper-constantan thermocouple, the electromo-tive force being determined by means of a potentiometric circuit of such a nature as to reduce the uncertainty of the tempera ture to less than O.I f. The fractionating column employed in the determination of the composition of the gas phase had a diameter of 0.12 in. and was approximately 4 ft. long, while the column employed in the analysis of the liquid phase was 0.18 in. in diameter and about 5 ft. long. Each column was equipped with the conventional constant-volume receivers, which were maintained at a constant temperature by means of an automatically controlled oil bath. The phase behavior of a number of binary systems consisting of parafin hydro-carbons has been determined in recent years. In addition, the composition of the coexisting phases of mixtures of crude oil and natural gas has been investigated.~ However, the latter study did not include information concerning the influence of the concentration of a component upon its distribution between two coexisting phases. Production statistics show that during the period of emergence from the depression the coal industry was becoming increasingly cognizant of the economic and competitive necessity for mechanizing. About 1935 many of its leaders were becoming aware also of the alarming scarcity of men properly trained to cope with the new problems of mechanization. In order to get a factual statement of this problem, a special AIME Coal Division Committee was requested to survey the condition. Its investigation disclosed that graduates of mining schools going into coal mining numbered 16 in 1937 and 15 in 1938. With this as a background, Pittsburgh Coal Co. foresaw that a comprehensive program was necessary if it was to enlist the services of trained technical men, who were an indispensable part of a mechanization program. The purpose of this paper is to review the program set up, to comment on the successes and failures and to outline the future course of action. Summer Work An inescapable conclusion from the mechanization statistics was that the opportunities in coal mining were good. Not only was there a void in technical skill to fill from past years, but the accelerating rate of mechanization indicated an increasing demand for technically trained men for the future. The remedy lay primarily in presenting facts con cerning the coal industry to the undergraduate engineers before they made their professional occupational choice. Based on this idea, one of the key points in the program was summer vacation work for the undergraduate, which, through the inducement of summer earnings, brought men into the mines to take a look at the prospects. This was more successful than statistics indicate because the war scrambled badly the orderly working of the program, but it could not obscure the value of a summer work program. A decided advantage was that it gave the company a preview of the graduate. An observation on this part of the program is that it is extremely hard to gauge lower classmen, and we found it wise to give them the benefit of the doubt, as the last two years in college bring about surprisingly rapid development in some men. We could readily single out the men at the opposite ends of the scale of competence. PAUL DYER MERICA, who has been awarded the James Douglas Gold Medal for his achievements in non-ferrous metallurgy, is a Hoosier, having been born at Warsaw, Ind., in 1889. His father, a clergyman and educator, was president of the University of Wyoming from 1908 to 1913. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1908, young Merica (not yet twenty years of age) went to China, where he was professor of chemistry in Chekiang Provincial College, Hangchow, until 1911. He then went to Germany to s t u d y and was fortunate enough to receive his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin just a few months before the outbreak of the World War in 1914. Returning to America, his first position was as special investigator at the En¬gineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, but before the year was out he joined the staff of the U. S. Bureau of Standards as associate physicist. Since 1918, he has been superintendent of research for the International Nickel Co. His work during those years is excellently summarized in the following quotation from the statement of Zay Jeffries recommending him for the award.

The reduction by hydrogen of individual particles of dense hematite implanted in beds of inert spheres is controlled by single-particle kinetics. No evidence of reagent starvation was found down to low flow rates established by pressure gradients as low as 0.01 in. H2O per- in. of depth in beds of spheres as small as 3/16 in. diam. The optimum size for most rapid reduction of beds of homogeneous ores results from the effect on reducing potential of the gas of competing factors of supply and consumption. A recent publication1 presented the results of a study of the rate of reduction of iron ore in a fixed bed by hydrogen introduced at constant pressure differential. Under these conditions the reagent flow rate varied directly with the bed permeability, which was a function of particle size and shape and bed voidage, and inversely with the temperature-dependent viscosity of the gas. The present note adds data from supplementary experiments designed to reveal whether or not any partial reagent starvation arising from a flow-dependent transport resistance in the gas phase might have been operative. Kinetic studies were made of the reduction of individual spheres of iron oxide inserted into beds of inert spheres, so that the reagent flow rate and aerodynamic conditions were again determined by bed characteristics and temperature. The experimental techniques and apparatus were similar to those previously described.&apos; The synthetic iron ore spheres were wet-rolled by hand from powdered, reagent-grade* Fe2O3 and subsequently dried and then fired in air at 1250°C. The indurated pellets has almost no porosity as indicated by their specific gravity of 5.10. The beds were made of dense alumina spheres, closely sized to the same dimension as the iron oxide spheres, in the following diameters: 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, and 3/8 in. Each bed was hand-packed of particles of a single size to a controlled voidage of 0.32 and depth of 3 in. within a capsule having an internal diameter at least 10 times the particle diameter. A few weighed iron oxide spheres were individually planted in the central plane of the bed of inert spheres at points away from the wall. Reduction was carried out at atmospheric pressure by purified hydrogen at 670°, 800°, and 985°c. The reagent was supplied at precisely controlled pressure differentials of 0.01, 0.02, and 0.03 in. of water per in. of bed depth. This gave a range of flow rates similar to that used in the study of beds of ore and comparable with blast-furnace practice in terms of mols of reducing gas per hr per sq ft of cross-section. Viscous flow prevailed in all beds under the experimental conditions of this study. The reduced particles were checked for loss in weight and then sectioned for metallographic examination. Occasional particles were found to have contained minute internal cracks that interfered with the concentricity of the reduction interfaces, and data for such particles were rejected. An experimental rate constant for the reduction of the imbedded Fe2O3 spheres was calculated on the assumption that the rate was proportional to the metal-oxide interface area by an equation that has been found by McKewan2 to describe the reduction of single spheres

Often, as viewed by the public and many in the mining industry, abandoned limestone and gypsum quarries offer a simple, economic solution to the twofold problem of solid-waste disposal and land reclamation. In a state where about 75% of the existing quarries are in hydrologic connection with carbonate aquifiers the rationale for considering the storage of solid waste in them must be critically examined. Consistent with the requirements of water resources protection, criteria are suggested to evaluate the potentiality of using abandoned limestone and gypsum quarries as sanitary landfill sites.
