There was more activity in crude production in northwestern Pennsylvania in 1935 than for several years before, resulting in an increased oil production and also in the number of wells completed. Crude -production approximated 16 million barrels for the state, an increase of about one million barrels over 1934. Demand, indicated by refiners' runs to stills, increased proportionally, leaving stocks of available crude at the end of the year at the lowest point since the middle of 1934, when they reached an all-time low. The price of crude varied during the year from a low of $2.02 to a high of $2.27 at the end of the year for Middle district oil. The price of Bradford and southwest Pcnnsylvania oil changed accordingly. The average for the year would be a lower price than in 1934. A summary of the production data for the year 1935 is given in Table 1. In making up this table, 1935 figures were simply added to the table published by S. H. Cathcart last year1. A list of important wildcats is given in Table 2. Bradford Field Approximately 10,000 acres of the proven producing area of the Bradford field is in Cattaraugus County, New York, and it is possible, by differences, to distinguish the Pennsylvania production from the New York portion. The listed production for the Bradford field includes only that portion of the field situated in Pennsylvania, but also includes production from a small pool, locally known as the Mt. Jewett-Kanesholm pool, where the Bradford sand is being developed and flooded in precisply the same manner as that of the Bradford field itself. The Mt. Jewett-Kanesholm pool is not, strictly speaking, an extension of the Bradford field, but inasmuch as it is so closely allied with the Bradford field-—that is, the sand is the same and the production methods are the same—the production and drilling figures include this area.

SUMMARY Laboratory high pressure column tests have shown that the presence of 1-20 ppm of aluminum ion effectively prevents permeability loss during uranium leaching with leachates containing sodium carbonate. If added after permeability loss has occurred, aluminum ion can restore the permeability to nearly its original value. No deleterious effect was observed on uranium leaching performance and the technique should be quite compatible with all field operations. INTRODUCTION The recovery of uranium values from underground deposits by in situ leaching or solution mining has become economically viable and competitive with conventional open pit or underground mining/milling systems (Merrit, 1971). In situ leaching processes are particularly suitable for small, low-grade deposits located in deep formations and dispersed in many thin layers. Many such ore bodies occur along a broad band of the Gulf Coastal Plain (Eargle et. al., 1971). The advantages of the in situ leaching processes have been reviewed (Anderson and Ritchi, 1968). In the in situ leaching process, a lixiviant containing the leaching chemicals is injected into the subterranean deposit and solubilizes uranium as it traverses the ore body. The pregnant lixiviant or leachate is produced from the production well and is then treated to recover the uranium. The resulting barren solution is made up with the leaching chemical to form lixiviant for re-injection. Upon completion of the leaching operation, the formation is contaminated with leaching chemicals and other species made soluble in the leaching operation and has to be treated to reduce the concentration of these contaminants in the ground water to levels acceptable to the regulatory agencies (Witlington and Taylor, 1978). Restoration is accomplished by injecting a restoration fluid, which could be the fresh water or water containing chemicals, into the formation. As it traverses the leached formation, the restoration fluid picks up the contaminants and is then produced at the production well. This produced water is either disposed or purified for recycle. In both phases of operation, formation permeability or well injectivity is one of the most important parameters which determines the viability of the in situ leaching process. Low formation permeability limits production rates, leading to uneconomical operations. The formation is said to be sensitive if there is a sharp loss of permeability on contact with water and other fluids. Many uranium bearing formations, for example, the Catahoula formation of the Texas Coastal Plain, contain significant amounts of clay minerals which are water sensitive. Serious permeability losses can occur when the pH and chemical composition of the lixiviant is significantly different from that of the formation water. Jones has investigated the influence of chemical composition of water on clay blocking of permeability (Jones, 1964) and Mungan studied permeability reduction through changes in pH and salinity of the water (Mungan, 1965). Various mechanisms of permeability damage have been proposed and reviewed (Jones, 1964; Mungan, 1965; Gray and Rex, 1966; and Veley, 1969). When large amounts of swelling clays are present, a significant fraction of the flow channels in the formation can be reduced due to swelling. However, in most cases, swelling need not be the main cause of permeability losses. Particle dispersion and migration or clay sliming can be more important causes for formation damage. Clay particles entrained in the moving fluids are carried downstream until they lodge in pore constrictions. As a result, microscopic filter cakes are formed by these obstructions, plugging the pores, effectively restricting fluid flow and reducing the formation permeability. Moore found that as little as 1-4 percent clays present in a fine grained sandstone could completely plug the formation if they are contacted by incompatible injected fluids (Moore, 1960). It has been found that injection of NaHC03/Na2CO3 lixiviant into formations with significant clay content often leads to loss of formation permeability and well injectivity. To alleviate this problem a change of the lixiviant composition to KHC03/K2CO3 has been proposed. At present, however, many in situ leaching operations employ NH4HC03/(NH4)2C03 mixtures as a source of carbonates. This approach has been successfully used in South Texas by Mobil, Intercontinental Energy, Wyoming Minerals and U.S. Steel, etc. The use of ammonium carbonates solutions, however, contaminates the formation and requires a time-consuming restoration operation. The other approach to reduce the permeability loss is to pretreat the sensitive formation with chemicals which prevent clay dispersion and migration. Such chemicals include hydroxy-aluminum (Reed, 1972 and Coppel et. al., 1973), hydrolyzable zirconium salts (Peters and Stout, 1977), hydrolyzable metal ions in general (Veley, 1969) and polyelectrolyte polymers (Anonymous). Still another approach, is to minimize the "shock" caused by sudden injection by gradually changing the chemical composition of the injected fluids from that of the formation water. THE APPROACH Since permeability loss can be an important factor limiting the efficiency and economic viability of the in situ leaching process, a study was initiated on

Data about production are practically non-existent before 1860. The Census of 1840 reported a small amount, and a number of small mines were opened in the forties, all of the coal being used locally, or hauled to consumers in wagons. Tonnages shown in Table 72 are estimated from those for which authority is given. Railroads reported coal tonnages carried in the state in 1878 and subsequent years for years ending June 30th;, it is not stated that the tonnage originated in the state. Considering this fact, and the considerable amounts used locally, the tonnages given in Table 72 are certainly not larger than the actual amounts produced.

ONE of the most striking phenomena connected with the mines on the Comstock lode is the extreme heat encountered in the lower levels. This heat is not due to the burning of candles, heat of the men, and decomposition of timbers, all intensified by bad ventilation, as was the case nearer the surface. It proceeds from the rock, which maintains constantly a temperature very much higher than the average of the atmosphere in Nevada. The heat of these mines is a matter of more than usual interest, for they are the only hot ones now worked in the United States, and both in the present temperature encountered and in the increase which is to be expected as greater depths are reached, they appear to surpass any foreign mines of which we have a record. Hot mines are known also in other countries, as in the tin and copper lodes of Wales, where one of the veins worked by the United Mines is known as the hot lode. It has springs which discharge water at a temperature of 116° Fahrenheit, the depth being 220 fathoms, or 1320 feet. The heat of the air in these workings is given at 100° to 113° Fahrenheit. The air is bad, and the heat in the drifts seems to be traceable to defective ventilation rather than to the real necessities of the case. Air is supplied through a small pipe, and is drawn from a place where the temperature is 95° Fahrenheit. Under such circumstances it is not surprising to read that in this hot mine the air is hotter than the rock, a state of things which I have never observed in the Comstock. Other mines have been reported to the British Coal Committee as having temperatures of 106° Fahrenheit and thereabouts, but the only positive comparisons that are available at this writing are the following, all from Cornish mines * Read by permission of Lieut. Most of the petroleum produced in New York State is obtained by flooding; that is, water drive. No important oil fields have been developed during the past 30 years, nor does there seem much hope that the productive oil areas will be substantially enlarged in the future. There is some prospect that additional supplies may be obtained by deeper drilling, but deep tests for gas to the Oriskany sandstone in some of the oil-producing areas have been without results so far as any discoveries of oil are concerned. Although the flooding method had been made legal in 1919, and some floods had been in operation previous to 1921, that year marks the beginning of a rapid increase in oil production by the new method. The flush production of oil in New York was in 1882, shortly after the discovery of the Richburg pool in Allegany County. The oil production in that year amounted to 6,685,000 bbl. The 1937 production of 5,478,000 bbl. was the largest since the flush production of 55 years ago. The effectiveness of water-flooding for increasing oil production from the old New York fields is shown in Table 1. THE results to come from the application of cheap oxygen to industry in general will be so great that it is not possible to enumerate them beforehand and still less to estimate them. We naturally think first of the fuel to be saved; yet this is only a minor item. The main results will be changes in methods of manufacture or of operation. The speed of operation will be greatly increased, with consequent savings in labor and fixed charges, and also, in most cases, in the cost of fuel. High temperature will be brought within the reach of every manufacturer, whereas it is now available only to those operating expensive electric furnaces located within reach of large water power. New speeds and new temperatures mean improvements and processes not thought of at present. Incidentally the changes in methods will probably change the location of important world industries, the tendency being to concentrate at the fuel centers. The whole subject is so new that most of the data which an engineer requires for definite estimates do not exist. All that is possible now is to obtain a general view of the subject with rough and fragmentary estimates for some of the industries with which we are specially concerned. Most of the figures presented deal with fuel saving merely because there are available no data from which to estimate the effect on speed of operation. When working out the practical problems involved in substituting oxygen for air, in most cases the change will be made step by step; by trying out air enriched with increasing percentages of oxygen. Such partial applications of oxygen will be temporary expedients during the transition and there will be no stopping place short of the complete substitution of air by oxygen. This final stage is therefore the one discussed in this paper.1

Field experience in uranium has shown it is most economical to ram through a drilling program to obtain maximum footage per drill hour. Drift surveys can then determine the course of the holes. Using this method is generally cheaper than paying the additional cost involved in using the drilling technique and equipment necessary to maintain straight holes. Factors Affecting Direction of Bit Travel: In all rotary-drilled holes there is an interplay of forces or conditions affecting the direction of bit travel. Rarely is a straight vertical hole obtained. One of the major factors is weight on a drill string. In looking at a joint of drill stem it is hard to imagine its being quite flexible, but flexing of the steel increases when many joints are made up together, and even a slight weight added to the upper portion causes a buckling or spiraling effect in the hole. The result is that the bit deviates from the vertical.

Austria.—Austria produced some 430 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1934. Gosting II well near Zis-tersdorf was placed on the pump in August and at the end of the year was still producing about three cisterns daily. This well is owned by the Erdöl-Produktionsgesellschaft while Gösting I is owned by Raky-Danubia. Only five wells were completed in the republic during the year. These accounted for 1783.5 meters of the 2225 meters drilled. The only producer completed was Gosting 11. At the close of the year, four rigs were in operation and one rigging up. At least 8 or 10 new wells are planned in Lower Austria for 1935. The European Gas & Electric Co. put its 6-km. gas line into operation in May and has sold 12,301,550 cu. m. of gas to the Vienna City Electric Works. A 2-km. pipe line was built from Gösting II to the railway loading rack near Zistersdorf. Hungary.—No oil or gas was produced except a small amount of gas trapped from flowing artesian wells. The Government completed and abandoned a 1500-m. hole at Tisztaberek in northeastern Hungary and is drilling at 967 m. near Bogáes, 120 km. northeast of Budapest. It is unofficially reported it plans to drill two new wells in 1935. The European Gas & Electric Co. has a rig up for a test at Mihalyi in Transdanubia. Czechoslovakia.—In Gbely (Egbell) there were produced 1283 cisterns of 10,000 kg. of 0.935 sp. gr. oil and a small amount of gas used for fuel. This field is operated by the Government; 17 shallow producing wells and three dry holes were drilled, with a total of 3351 m. of hole completed. In Hodonin (Goding) there were produced approximately 1300 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each of 0.91 sp. gr. oil and a small amount of gas used for fuel. The field is operated by the Apollo, which drilled four producing wells averaging 460 m. in depth, one small gas well of 550 m., one small gas well 260, and one dry hole 230 m. Two wells were deepened a total of 80 meters. The Government is drilling below 800 m. in a wildcat test in eastern Czechoslovakia near the Rumanian frontier.

During- the past 10 years the annual production of petroleum in New York has averaged close to 5,000,000 bbl., the total for the period being 49,881,000 bbl. In 6 of the 10 years, the production was slightly in excess of the 5,000,000 mark. The 1944 production of 4,697,000 bbl. represents a 7 per cent decline from the previous year. Of the total 1944 output, the Allegany County district, which includes two small areas of Steuben County, contributcd 3,614,065 bbl., a decline of 5 per cent from 1943, and the contribution of Cattaraugus County, which represents the northern extension of the Bradford pool of Pennsylvania into New York was 1,082,935 bbl., a decline of more than 14 per cent. Since March 1942, the posted price of New York crude oil has remained at $3.00 per bbl. On lug. I, 1944, a Federal subsidy of 75¢ per bbl. was granted to oil producers, thus making the price actually $3.75 per bbl. Since all of the oil produced in New York comes under the designation "stripper well operations," it is entitled to the Federal subsidy. During the last few years there has been little change in the number of wells drilled annually. In the Allegany field, which accounts for three fourths of the oil produced in the state, 1240 wells, including water-intake wells, were drilled during 1944 as compared with 1223 in 1943. There was no marked increase in the number of wells drilled after granting the subsidy of 75¢ per bbl. of oil on Aug. I, the increase being but 14 wells during the last half of the year over the preceding six months. In flooding operations it is not to be expected that even a substantial increase in the price of crude oil will be reflected quickly in an increase of the number of wells drilled or in a marked increase in production of crude oil. In flooded areas, oil is obtained through a program extending over a number of years. This program involves the drilling of the water or input pressure wells, drilling of the oil wells, building up the oil flood to maximum production, and finally the watering out of the well when the amount of oil produced in proportion to the water becomes so small that pumping is no longer profitable. The various operations may extend over a period of 10 years or more, during which time the price of crude may have fluctuated greatly. Although the rate of production can be controlled to a limited extent, it is evident that a flood when once begun must be continued regardless of the price of crude. During the past seven years New York crude has had a price range from $1.68 per bbl. in 1938 to the present price of $3.75 per barrel The field pattern now in general use for wells in a flood project is the "five-spot." Under this arrangement, the lease is divided into squares with a water well at each corner and an oil well in the center. In the all-over pattern of the lease each oil well is acted upon by four water wells and each water well supplies part of the pressure to four oil wells. Spacing between the input water wells and the oil wells usually varies from zoo to 225 ft. or, on an acre basis, there is one oil well and one water well for each 2 1/2 acres. THE relation between gases and metals has been a subject of increasingly active investigation during the past years, principally devoted to the study of metal-hydrogen systems. It has been found that hydrogen is soluble in most molten metals to an appreciable extent and somewhat soluble in most solid metals.1,2 In every known case there is a sudden decrease in solubility at the melting point. Thus a freezing mass of metal containing hydrogen in excess of the solid solubility must in some way expel that excess during the freezing process. This leads to internal blowholes, and such effects as pinhole porosity. Gas trapped in metal that is to be fabricated by a working process such as extrusion or rolling may be the cause of blisters. For some cases, notably in copper and iron alloys, the presence of hydrogen can lead to extreme embrittlement of the metal. The aluminum-casting industry has long recognized the importance of hydrogen in its techniques. Excess gas in molten aluminum alloys often leads to the formation of "pinhole porosity" in the solid casting.3 To prevent this hydrogen pickup it is necessary to avoid overheating the melt and to protect it from such sources of hydrogen as water. In spite of all precautions, it is sometimes necessary to extract hydrogen from the melt just before pouring by bubbling with a gas such as chlorine or nitrogen. Recently it has been found that somewhat similar effects are possible with magnesium alloys, in that the presence of hydrogen can induce or aggravate microporosity.4-6 This paper is primarily concerned with a presentation of some facts concerning the solubility of hydrogen in magnesium and its alloys, with some discussion of the significance of these facts in a practical sense. In any study of gas-metal systems it is important to bear in mind a clear distinction between adsorption on surfaces and absorption within the lattice.1 Considerable attention has been directed toward determining whether hydrogen is truly soluble in any solid metal, or whether the gas extracted from a sample was present at surfaces (external and internal) only.7 Most present day evidence supports the idea of true solution in addition to adsorption. A second important factor when dealing with gas solubility is the dependence of such solubility on external pressure. For diatomic gases such as H2, solubility in both liquid and solid metals apparently is proportional to the square root of the pressure, indicating a breakdown to a monatomic gas before diffusion into the lattice .2 For true equilibrium values of solubility, therefore, the pressure at the metal surface must be constant and, preferably, known. There are not many data about early coal production in Kentucky, but some legislative reports, early geological studies and occasional newspaper articles have left some figures. The earliest production with any authentic record is that of Lee County, the coal being boated down the Kentucky River to Frankfort. While never a large producer, this county has the longest record in the State. Production is recorded in several of the western coal counties in 1820, and in several others a few years later. The early production in Greenup County was for the iron furnaces operating there. Clay County had a large salt output in the early days and this required a large output, for those days, of coal; the amount of fuel is based on the quantity of salt. It will be noticed that several counties on the Ohio River produced considerable quantities of coal before the Civil War, much of it being consumed by the river steamers. Since the end of the war, these counties have never occupied the relatively important position they had prior to that time. All of the coal produced in the eastern mountain counties moved out of them by water before the war, and during that struggle nearly all mining was stopped. The growth of the railroads after the war greatly reduced the river traffic from these counties, and in some cases it was never renewed. The coal shipped from Lawrence County prior to 1861 all moved by water; after that date there was no production excepting for local use until 1879, and since that time, all shipments have been by rail. Some of the early railroad reports have been helpful in reporting shipments, but for the early years very few of them can be found, and after about 1879 the quantities reported cannot be identified as to origin. Pres. J. B. Hill, Louisville and Nashville Railroad, furnished all of the data available for his line. Sources of data are shown on Table 61; other figures are estimated. A list of early Kentucky mines is given in Table 13.

A FULL description of past mining conditions in eastern Kentucky coal mines with reference to the cause of coal bumps and the preventive methods was given by the writer in a previous paper.1 At that time the method had been tried for a period of 13 months, successfully. The method has been enlarged add carried on for over two years, and is still successful. Recapitulating briefly from the previous paper: The No. 3 mine of the Mary Helen Coal Corporation, Coalgood, Ky., operates in the Harlan seam, and is worked by a room-and-pillar method. Cover varies from 1200 to 2000 ft. and the immediate roof over the coal is a hard, massive, sand rock, estimated to be from 70 to 90 ft. thick. The average height of coal throughout the mine is 46 inches. The reason for adopting the method were that in this mine five men had been killed by coal bumps between 1931 and 1934; many other men had been injured and coal-cutting machines had been thrown from under the cut. The morale of the workmen was at a very low ebb. Many remedies had been tried in other mines troubled by coal bumps, one method being to leave chain and room pillars in every 500 ft., to serve a bumping block; the idea being that if a bump took place it would act on the pillars left in the gob. Another method adopted was to board up a pillar, leaving a small opening at the bottom sufficient for shoveling coal. In this system the idea was that if a bump did occur on the pillar, the boards would stop flying coal so that no one would be injured. Many other methods were tried and it is safe to say that each mine troubled by coal bumps tried various remedies, none of which proved effective. On considering all that had been attempted in an effort to eliminate coal bumps, and the information gained by experience of coal bumps in various mines, it was thought that a long face with gob support would eliminate the trouble. Accordingly, on Jan. 15, 1935, a long face was started with wood cribs on 20-ft. centers. When the former paper was written on this method, the long face had been brought back a distance
