A new apparatus termed a "distribution analyzer" is introduced to ascertain the optimum conditions of electrostatic separation of minerals. It was found that with similar surface condition, testing environment and a constant feed rate of not higher than one layer of particles fed on the grounded roll of the separator, the behavior of each component mineral in a synthetic mixture or ore is roughly similar to that of the same mineral when tested alone.

The Berlin gold-quartz mine is situated in Nye county, Nevada, on the west flank of the Shoshone range, about 40 miles south and 30 miles west from the town of Austin, the county-seat of Lander county. The distance from Austin is about 60 miles by stage-road. The outcrop of the vein, at the top of the incline-shaft, is situated just at the base of the mountain proper, almost exactly at the intersection of the mountain-side with the gravelly bench that slopes for about three-quarters of a mile to the flatter sage-brush plain, or desert valley, below. The vein itself consists almost entirely of quartz, with perhaps 2 per cent. of sulphide of iron, copper, lead, zinc and antimony, and perhaps a trace of some of the compounds of tellurium with gold and silver, although none of the latter have been as yet positively identified. The relative proportion, by weight, of silver and gold in the ores, varies in different parts of the vein, from 12 silver for 1 of gold, to 7 silver for 1 of gold. The quartz vein-filling is usually frozen fast to the walls, and is very hard and compact, seldom showing the friable, fissured, or shelly structure often to be found in quartz-veins. Comparatively little evidence of relative motion of one wall of the vein upon the other is to be found—a fact indicating that during the formation of the vein, and prior to the extensive movements herein described, little disturbance had taken place. No evidence whatever of metasomatic origin has been observed. On the other hand, occasional occurrences of comby structure, in which the axes of the quartz-crystals are at right angles to the plane of the vein, rather indicate deposition from solution in a pre-existing fissure. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1936 approximated 20,000 bbl., about the same as in 1935. Accurate figures are available only for the Glenmary field in southwestern Scott County and the Boone Camp, Seabolt, and Coon Hollow pools in north central Morgan County. Small amounts of oil were produced in the Poplar Cove region of eastern Fentress County, in Tinsleys Bottom along the line between Clay and Jackson Counties, and in the Lock Branch pool of northern Jackson County. The renewed interest in these three pools, which were abandoned for several years, reflects the effect of rising prices for crude oil in Tennessee. Developments in these fields were begun late in 1936 and therefore have had little cffect on the production for the year. A nurnber of small scattered wells in abandoned fields in Clay County were pumped intermittently during the year, but no production figures are available on this production. The acidizing of a number of wells in Scott and Morgan counties reported last1 year has been responsible for an increase of nearly 4000 bbl. over 1935 in this region. Results have shown, however, that the Glenmary pay (Glenmary and Coon Hollow pools) at about the top of the St. Louis limestone, responds more favorably to acid treatment than does the Boone Camp (Boone Camp and Seabolt pools) horizon in the Fort Payne formation of lower Mississippian age. This difference is probably due to the siliceous and argillaceous content of the Boone Camp pay. The only natural gas marketed off the lease in Tennessee during 1936 was in Morgan County, where approximately 10,000,000 cu. ft. were furnished the towns of Sunbright and Burrville and the immediate vicinity. The gas occurs with the oil in the Boone Camp field and small amounts were put on the line from the near-by Coon Hollow and Seabolt pools. There are 11 gas wells in the area. THE importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.1 It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Bessemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstätten figures.4 Osmond5 observed structures in a steel ingot analogous to those found in meteorites. The PGT uranium assay probe is a borehole tool developed by Princeton Gamma-Tech over the last several years. It has the ability to do an in-situ assay of uranium in the presence of any amount of disequilibrium. It has some advantages over coring including cost, speed of analysis, and accuracy. In this paper we would like to give a brief description of the measurement and then show some sample logs from South Texas. Uranium exploration and development is carried out primarily by gamma logging since uranium daughters are prolific emitters of gamma rays. The conventional gross gamma tool for uranium logging is limited in value because of the inability of this tool to distinguish uranium from its daughters and other naturally occurring radioisotopes, such as potassium and thorium. This problem becomes severe in cases of disequilibrium. Disequilibrium, in a geological context, is defined as the condition when the gamma radiations from the daughter products are being emitted in a location different from that of the parent uranium. In the decay chain of uranium almost all the gamma radiation emitted in the entire chain comes from the daughter product, bismuth-214. Bismuth-214 is separated from uranium by several long-lived isotopes that are chemically active and have different physical properties, often resulting in shifts in the location of bismuth- 214 relative to the parent uranium. In the United States orebodies exhibiting disequilibrium are a common occurrence and the use of a gross gamma log to delineate uranium orebodies can lead to errors. At present the solution to the disequilibrium problem is extensive coring followed by chemical analyses of the cores. There are several drawbacks in using this technique. First is the high cost of coring, the second is the fact that no results are available for days, or typically, weeks after the drilling is done. Thus for development work, coring and drilling must be done on a grid basis and many additional holes are cored to ensure that the entire orebody is mapped. Another disadvantage to cores is the fact that a small volume is sampled, the volume of the core itself. This leads to problems in the mapping out of the orebody when the ore de- posit is not very homogeneous. The PGT probe described in this paper is a new solution to the disequilibrium problem. Basically, the probe measures radiations that come almost directly from uranium itself. The first daughter of uranium, which is protactinium-234 (Pa-234), is only separated from uranium by a 24-day half-life and no disequilibrium problems build up in such a short time. The PGT probe measures the intensity of a one MeV gamma line emitted by Pa-234 and, using this information, calculates the concentration of uranium. The PGT probe is 24" in diameter and 12 feet long. The probe contains a microprocessor which passes the information to a larger minicomputer in the truck. All data is analyzed on site, and the results from a high speed printer are presented to the geologist. Data is also available on 9- track IBM compatible tape for further processing. The PGT probe output is linear with uranium concentration. The only correction factor is for borehole size, and that only becomes important in boreholes bigger than seven inches in diameter. Dead time is compensated in the probe itself and no problems have been encountered in ore zones up to several percent UjO8. In addition to the uranium assay, a conventional gross gamma log is plotted alongside. Grade thicknesses for zones above cutoff are calculated as well as disequilibrium factors. COMPARISONS During its commercial operation PGT logged a series of 18 holes that had been cored and assayed. All of the holes in this series were logged in normal operation by regular field operators. The time to log each hole was generally under an hour, and in typical operation a PGT logging truck will do between 7 and 8 holes a day. The results of the comparison of the PGT and the core assays are presented in a series of figures showing plots of the PGT assay, core analysis and gross gamma measurements. The first three figures show individual holes with the gross gamma plotted along with the core and the PGT assays. All three logs were from holes on the reduced side of a rollfront deposit in South Texas. In Figure 1 we see the two wings of the roll- front at 143 ft and 150 ft separated by a barren zone. The wings are well defined both by the PGT assay and the core. There is approximately a one foot shift which can be attributed to drilling errors. SEAMLESS pipe, the product produced from piercing a solid round billet of steel by the Mannesmann process, was first produced in the latter half of the 19th century, the Mannesmann machine having been patented in 1885. The products of other processes also have been termed seamless pipe; for example, the cylindrical section produced by "cupping," which consists of forming a cup from a flat plate or disk and further elongating the cup into a tube by passing it through a set of reducing dies. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the more important metallurgical factors and their relationship to the economical production of seamless pipe produced by the Mannesmann piercing process. The first seamless tube plant in America was established at Shelby, Ohio, in 1891, and was employed in the manufacture of bicycle tubing. For a number of years the bicycle industry was the only user of seamless tubing, and this tubing was produced by hot-rolling pierced billets imported from Europe and finishing on the cold drawbench. At the turn of the century, the automotive industry was responsible for an increase in the demand for seamless tubing. The growth of this industry was the dominant factor leading to the phenomenal growth of the petroleum industry, which in turn created a tremendous demand for seamless pipe. In addition; the old lapweld iron boiler tubes for stationary and locomotive boilers were replaced gradually by seamless tubes. Since 1929, the production of seamless steel pipe and tubes has increased over loo pct. In 1929, 1,459,9031 net tons of seamless pipe was produced, including both hot-finished and cold-drawn material, as compared with 3,087,3122 net [ ] tons in 1948. Table I gives the distribution of seamless pipe by classes for 1948. METALLURGICAL PROBLEMS From a metallurgical standpoint, the production of seamless pipe has presented many problems. Practically every type of steel, carbon and alloy, with the exception of the superalloys developed during World War II, has been pierced and rolled successfully into tubing. This includes bessemer, open hearth, by the stationary and duplex processes, and electric steels. The range of sizes produced is no less staggering to the imagination, when it is considered that the hypodermic needle, which is 0.016 in. diam with a wall thickness of 0.004 in., and pipe for gas or oil transmission lines, with a 26 in. THE CHAIRMAN (ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.).-In forcing us to face and to discuss the important question of erosion of steel guns, Prof. Fay is performing a public service. His investigation has been fruitful and his results illuminating and suggestive. It is not in a spirit of adverse criticism, therefore, that I venture a few remarks suggested by his paper, but rather to add my mite to the discussion in the hope that it may not be entirely without value. Prof. Fay considers it conclusively demonstrated that the hard layers forming in the inside of guns of large calibers after they have been fired a number of times consist of martensite. Still, he admits that he never was able to detect in the hard layers the structural characteristics of martensite. This leads him to conceive the existence of amorphous martensite. We may well hesitate before accepting this theory on the strength of the evidence offered. Martensite, as we know it, is essentially a crystalline condition assumed by a close association of iron and carbon, possibly if not probably of the nature of a solid solution. Lacking this crystalline character we are hardly justified in calling it martensite on the ground, merely, of its being very hard.

INTRODUCTION The Salvador Division of Codelco Chile is an important copper molybdenum production center, located 1,200 km north of Santiago and 124 km east of the Pacific Ocean, in the foothills of the Andes Range. El Salvador Mine produces by block caving 8,600,000 t of ore with a content of 1 .l0% Cu and 0.02% Mo, from a copper porphyry ore body. The geology of the ore body shows a great heterogeneity as to rocks, grade distribution, ore height and undercutting levels. This has resulted in a variety of designs for the productive units (blocks) and in the mineral handling systems. Up to now, 4 systems have been employed: grizzly and intermediate haulage; slusher drifts with intermediate ore pass and haulage; slusher drifts with scraper loading directly into trains; and, LHD. On the other hand there is a marked dispersion in the final results from each block mined out. We report here the conclusions reached after analyzing the data gathered on the mining of 163 depleted blocks, representing a total production of 102,000,000 t, with an undercut area of 340,000 sq m. The final results of each block, characterized in terms of tonnage and fine cop- per recovery, were studied as a function of a number of design, geological, and operational parameters. BASIC CONCEPTS Indices of Efficiency In order to evaluate the final result of each block, or group of blocks, the following indices of efficiency were defined : Tonnage Recovery (TR) . It is the ratio between the ore tonnage extracted and the in situ tonnage estimate for each block or group of blocks. Grade efficiency (E) . It is the ratio between the Cu mill feed grade and the in situ Cu grade estimate for each block or group of blocks. Grade efficiency is numerically equal to the ratio between fine copper recovery (FR) and tonnage recovery (TR) . Figure 1 shows the final results for 163 mined out blocks, in terms of tonnage and fine copper recovery. Different grade efficiencies are also indicated. The marked dispersion in the final results of mined out blocks must be stressed since it greatly incides in mine planning. It must be kept in mind that an eventual concentration of low overall efficiency in the blocks during a given period (e.g., one year) will make it necessary to bring into production new blocks over the standard development schedule. It is worth noting that the final results in the 163 mined out blocks corresponding to a production of 102,000,000 t of ore with a mill feed grade of 1.445% were obtained from an ore estimate of 93,000,000 t and a grade of 1.671% Cu, which represents 110% tonnage recovery and 86% grade efficiency. Parameters Studied The following parameters are considered in this study: Geological Parameters. These parameters depend exclusively on the geological and geotechnical features of the ore body. IN SITU GRADE: The initial estimate of the block grade. Four copper grade categories were considered : (a) lower than 1.3% ; (b) 1.3 to 1.6%; (c) 1.6 to 2.0%; (d) higher than 2.0%. The overall initial in situ estimate of the ore body was 1.6% Cu. IN SITU TONNAGE: Initial tonnage estimate of the block. Four categories are considered: (a) below 500,000 t; (b) 500,000 to 1,000,000 t (c) 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 t; (d) over 1,500,000 t. CONTACTS SLOPE: Since up to 4 rock types can be found in a block, resulting in a corresponding number of contacts, a horizontal con- tact was defined as that which forms an angle of less than 45" with the horizontal and a vertical contact that which forms an angle of more than 45" with the horizontal. GRADE DISTRIBUTION: As in rock types, horizontal and vertical grades were defined. ORE HEIGHT: The distance measured between the undercut level and the top of ore. Four categories are considered: (a) less than 60 m; (b) 60 to 100 m; (c) 100 to 150 m; (d)over 150 m

TAE chemical industry is constantly looking for new materials which either are more resistant to corrosion than those now available or have improved physical properties to meet the requirements of higher temperatures and greater pressures. Attack by acids is-one of the more important forms of corrosion-and in the last few years the development of acid-resistant alloys has been quite rapid. Perhaps the most notable example is that of nitric acid, 'the problem of which has largely been solved by the chromium-iron and chromium-iron-nickel alloys. Sulfuric acid may be handled in lead, iron, or the iron-silicon alloys, depending on conditions. As to hydrochloric acid, no metal or alloy can be called entirely satisfactory for handling. this acid under plant conditions.1 The results of our investigations on the resistance of the nickel-molybdenum alloys to hydrochloric acid have been confirmed by those of Guertler, Rohn, Schulz, Jenge, and others,' but thus far only one such alloy has approached commercial production in Germany; this contains approximately 15 per cent. chromium and 7 per cent. molybdenum with the remainder chiefly nickel. Dr. S. W. Parr, as far back as 1914, developed a complex alloy known as "illium," with a nickel base and containing some molybdenum.3 Dr. Parr was primarily interested in an alloy for lining bomb calorimeters, and while illium does show good resistance to acid it is too expensive for general use. EDWARDS, Grand Junction, Colo. (communication to the Secretary) :* Effect of Heat. It should be remembered that the coefficient of expansion of concrete is nearly that of iron; therefore in constructing flues the design must take account of this important detail. The cracking of flues, mentioned by Mr. Havard as having occurred at a temperature of 100° C. and above, . were possibly caused by neglecting to appreciate the extent of the expansion and contraction of the concrete. Effect of Atmospheric Moisture.-The moisture present in the atmosphere is exceedingly injurious to flues of any material, and those made of concrete are no more susceptible than of brick. My experience with flues of the Monier construction, having walls from 1.5 to 2.5 in. thick plastered upon a net-work of iron rods, was unsatisfactory from the standpoint of dura¬bility.

Mine ventilation analysis is an engineering discipline that can be considered a branch of the body of science known as network analysis. Likewise, the group of engineering procedures known as the critical- path method (CPM) is considered a branch of network analysis. It is therefore not surprising that mine ventilation network analysis and CPM have many similarities. These similarities are useful in analyzing several types of mine ventilation problems and will be utilized in this paper. The analogy between the free split in a ventilation circuit and the critical path in a scheduling network has been recognized by Owili-Eger (1973). While this was recognized as a property of a general ventilation network, many important applications to controlled- splitting problems also exist. The mathematical procedures necessary to apply CPM and network methods have previously been presented (Wang, 1981; Wang, 1982). This paper will illustrate the implementation of these methods by application to mine ventilation networks.

A Discussion of the paper by H. O. Hofman and M. G. Magnuson, read at the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904. (British Columbia Meeting, July, 1905.) T. KIRKE ROSE, London, Eng. (communication to the Secretary*`) :-The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is re¬duced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, how¬ever, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20° C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid were added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions given oil p. 432 of the Bi-Monthly Bulletin, March, 1905, 1 would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. The electric utility industry is the largest customer of the coal industry and consumes nearly 50% of the present coal production in the United States. The byproduct of the burning of coal in utilities is ash in several forms including fly ash, bottom ash and bottom slag. At present, very little of the coal ash produced is being used and must be disposed of as waste. The coal industry should look upon this waste material as a valuable by-product which, if it can be sold for $2 to $4 per ton, will have the net effect of reducing the cost of coal to the utility by 1¢ to 2¢ per million Btu. There are many ways to use coal ash and thus benefit both the coal industry and the electric utility industry by reducing the cost of coal as burned. The solutions to the problems are obvious and all we have to do is apply them. The electric utility industry is the largest customer of the United States coal industry, consuming nearly 50% of present coal production. By 1980, the electric utilities are expected to burn over 500 million tpy of coal or 75% of total coal production. When coal is burned in electric utility plants, ash is produced in one of several forms. These include fly ash, bottom ash and bottom slag. At the present time, approximately 20 million tons of these ashes are produced and must be disposed of by the utilities at a cost of 50¢ to $2 per ton. In 15 years, more than double this quantity will be produced. Only a small quantity of this ash is put to any practical use. Much remains to be done about expanding uses for fly ash and bottom slag. It is well known that fly ash, when used to replace a portion of the cement in a concrete mix, will produce highest quality concrete. The Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation have constructed dams and other concrete structures for years with fly ash as a partial replacement for cement. However, many construction firms do not use it. This can become an opportunity for the coal industry to reduce the cost of coal delivered to utilities. Any fly ash, or other ash or slag, which is sold by the utilities, reduces the cost of coal burned by the utility. As much as 1¢ to 2¢ per million Btu could be taken from the fuel cost for each ton of ash sold which otherwise must be disposed of at a cost.

Determinations of the hydrogen content of irons and steels invariably are subject to two serious difficulties: (I) the determination of amounts of 0.001 per cent or less of any constituent requires an analytical procedure of unusual precision and accuracy, and (2) the hydrogen content of many samples is dccidedly not stable; i.e., there is no assurance that the content at the time the analysis is made is the same as it was when the sample was taken or at some previous time in the history of the piece. In respect to both the precision and speed of the determination, the vacuum-extraction procedure for the determination of hydrogen possesses advantages over the vacuum-fusion procedure, which has been the recognized standard for the detcrmination of other gaseous elements in sted-— oxygen and nitrogen for example. The basic facts upon which the vacuum-extraction procedure is based—i.e., the evolution of gas from solid steel when it is heated in vacuum, and the fact that the evolved gas is rich in hydrogen—were observed by Graham1 many years ago. Subsequent investigations have shown that hydrogen exists in steel chiefly as interstitial solid solution (i.e., in atomic dispersion) and perhaps to some extent as hydridcs that are unstable and decompose to form atomic hydrogen. In either case practically all of the hydrogen in steel at elevated temperatures exists in the atomic condition and consequently is able to diffuse readily through the metal. In contrast to this, other gaseous elements, such as oxygen and nitrogen, normally are present in steel chiefly in the form of relatively stable compounds such as oxides or silicates and nitrates; i.e., the oxygen and nitrogen atoms are fixed in stable combinations and are not free to migrate. The only oxygen or nitrogen that can diffuse in steel is the small amount in solution (atomically dispersed) and the rate of diffusion of these atoms is much less than that of hydrogen because of their greater atomic volume and lower mobility. Consequently, it is possible to extract most or all of the hydrogen from solid steel in a reasonable time at moderately elevated temperatures, but the procedure is not applicable to the determination of oxygen or nitrogen. It is only within the last decade that these observations have been developed into an analytical procedure for the determination of hydrogen. Apparatus and Procedure The apparatus used at the National Bureau of Standards,6 for the determination of hydrogen by the vacuum-extraction procedure, is shown schematically in Fig. I. The specimen, freshly cleaned and dried,* is suspended on a fine wire within the quartz furnace tube that is connected to the reservoir system and analytical train.

THE stack gases from regenerative furnaces are very seldom utilized for the production of steam. If the temperature of the gases is not higher than 300° C. (572° F.) there is no economy in their use for this purpose, as the amount of available heat is very small and the temperature is so little above that of the steam that the interchange is too slow. With higher temperatures of the waste gases, however, good results can be obtained. At the plant of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) at Palmerton there are a number of return tubular boilers, each 6 ft. in diameter and 20 ft. long, with 96 3.5-in. tubes, which are heated by the waste gases from the spelter furnaces. These furnaces have continuous regenerators heating the air only and the stack gases reach the boilers at a temperature of about 450°. The gas producers for one of these furnaces require 14 tons of anthracite (a mixture of Nos. 2 and 3 buckwheat), and the waste heat from the furnace gives a little more than 42 h.p. in steam. The boilers are not well adapted for the purpose, as they are much too large for the amount of heat going to them and the area of the tubes is not sufficient to take the gas from two furnaces without causing an objectionable amount of back pressure. The plant was built without any idea of using waste-heat boilers, and it was impossible to place the latter as close to the furnaces as they should be. Furnace and boiler are connected by an underground brick flue in which the temperature of the gas drops about 100°, losing 40 per cent. of its available heat. If the .boilers were close to the furnaces the horse power of each would be 70 instead of 42. Even under these unfavorable conditions the boilers have been very advantageous, as one boiler easily supplies the steam necessary for two batteries of producers. With such low gas temperatures the heating surface of the boilers is, of course, not as efficient and the flue areas need to be considerably larger than for coal firing.

IT is now recognized that several important types of reactions in metallic systems proceed by the formation of nuclei and the growth of these nuclei. The process, of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1Tammann held that the rate of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain,2-8 that the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solu-tion austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Parnop and Sachs, and others'-1 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decom-position by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect-the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.' Production of both metallurgical and thermal coal represents a significant sector of the mining economy of British Columbia. The coal measures are located in the Rocky Mountains, and the majority of the coal is produced by open pit mining. The coal seams occur interbedded with siltstones, sandstones, mudstones, and shales. Consequently, large volumes of waste rock are generated in the course of open pit mining. The waste rock is consigned to waste rock piles that of necessity must be developed on moderate to steeply sloping terrain. Some of the waste dumps currently under development will ultimately contain in excess of 500 million cubic meters of material, and some of the proposed waste piles will attain heights in excess of 300 m. These waste piles must be developed in a manner that will assure their stability through all stages of development, as well as over the long term after mining operations have been completed. This paper describes methods of waste dump development, factors affecting stability, modes of potential failure, and a simple method for monitoring movements to provide a warning of pending unstable conditions.

CONSIDERING that a typical modern drilling machine strikes approximately 2000 blows per min and may develop a force of 30 to 200 ft-lb, de- pending upon size of the drill used, the importance of uniform stress distribution in this type of drilling becomes obvious. If the rod were perfectly symmetrical, and if it did not rotate, the problem would be relatively simple, however, the necessary forging, machining and heat treating operations prevent attaining this state of perfection. Take the modern hollow drill rod. The blow is transmitted not from the striking end of the rod directly through to the point of impact of the bit in the rock, but rather through a somewhat complex tool. To add further problems, this entire assembly is rotated immediately after the impacting blow. Rather than attempt to discuss the magnitude and distribution of stresses, it is desired to present a few things that will minimize unusual stress concentration and produce a rod in which the stress distribution will approach the theoretical ideal.
