Experimental data is given for several natural minerals on the load required for the fracture of single specimens over a very wide size range. The experimental results are compared with published data, such as for coal specimens from 30 to 64 in. in size. Correlations of the specific energy (per unit mass) required for fracture with specimen size are given as functions of specimen shape and the experimentally observed load-size relationships. These correlations are discussed with reference to comminution theory. Comminution, through compression or impact, can result only if sufficient force, or energy, is applied to a specimen of a given size. The relation of specimen size to force requirements has not been adequately considered previously. For single particle fracture, it was previously shown 1 that the specific energy (energy, e, per unit mass, M) at fracture of single glass spheres was inversely proportional to the product size modulus, k, as indicated in the equation: e/M = C/k [1] This was found true not only for numerous glass specimens of the same nominal size but was true for all nominal sizes tested from 1/8 to 1 in. Also, it was observed that the smaller spheres required a greater specific energy at fracture than the larger spheres and consequently had a smaller product size modulus. However, the relationship giving the required fracture energy as a function of specimen size was not further elaborated upon. This paper will extend the development of the feed size effect on specific fracture energy for brittle materials. SPECIFIC ENERGY-FEED SlZE RELATIONSHIPS FROM PREVIOUS DATA For the particular glass spheres tested in the previously described experiments,' it can be shown, as on Fig. 1, that the specific energy varied inversely as the 4/3 power approximately of the feed size, F, in the span of nominal sizes ranging from 1/8 to 1 in. The load at which a 3-in. diam glass sphere (a crystal gazer's ball) was broken was within the range predicted by an extrapolation of this energy-feed size relationship. A study of ternary diffusion at 1315°C in the Fe-Co-Ni system covering the entire ternary phase diagram has been carried out. Experimental values of the four interdiffusion coefficients DFeNico,DFeCoCo, DFeCoNi were computed at 33 points of the ternary diagram. The limiting values of these coefficients on the three sides of the ternary diizgram have also been determined. This set of data is presented as a contour map on the ternary isotherm for each of the four coefficients. Assuming that the Fe-Co-Ni system can be considered as ideal, the phenomenological coefficients Lk ij (with k = Fe) have been computed and the Onsager reciprocal relutions verified. It is shown that, in the Fe-Co-Ni system, the diffusion process can also be described by only two interdiffusion coefficients DFeFe and DCoNiFe, the second cross diffusion coefficient DCoFeNi being equal to zero and the second direct difusion coefficient being given by The values of the cross interdiffusion coefficients and of the Onsager coefficients are explained in terms of atomic mobilities of the three components with the help of a kinetic calculation due to Lane and Kirkaldy.8 It is shown that all the results are explained if the tracer difusion coefficients of the three components are such that DFe > DNi ~ DCo in complete agreement with experimental data on the three binary systems. DIFFUSION in a ternary alloy system is basically and significantly different from diffusion in binary alloys. In binary diffusion, there is just one independent composition variable and only one coefficient Dij is needed to describe the interdiffusion process. In ternary diffusion, we must allow for cross interaction between two independent species, and four interdiffusion coefficients are necessary to describe the transport process. Kirkaldy et al.1,2 have determined interdiffusion coefficients in the systems, Cu-Mn-A1 and Zn-Cu-Al. Guy and Leroy4 have reported intrinsic diffusion coefficients for the r phase at 1300°C of Co-Ni-Cr alloys as a function of composition using the analysis of Philibert and Guy.3 Interdiffusion coefficients were measured at three different compositions at 850°C in the single phase copper-rich corner of the Cu-Zn-Mn system by Dayananda and race.5 Zie-bold and Ogilvie6 have determined interdiffusion coefficients in the single-phase field of the Cu-Ag-Au system at 725°C. Preliminary results on diffusion at 1136°C in the system Fe-Co-Ni have been reported.7 In this study, data are reported on a more complete determination of interdiffusion coefficients in the Fe-Co-Ni system in the entire ternary at 1315°C. There is complete solid solubility with the fcc structures at 1315ºC, and this system can be considered as nearly ideal. This approximation allows the computation of the Onsager phenomenological coefficients. These values can then be used to test a kinetic calculation of the Onsager L coefficients in ternary substitutional solid solutions due to Lane and Kirkaldy.8

. Only the acute phase of the smelter fume problem is new. The problem itself is older than the Christian era. While both lead and copper were mined and crudely smelted some 3000 years ago, it was not until the Roman occupation of the Iberian . Peninsula and the British Isles, which occurred but shortly before the beginning of the Christian era, that there was any evidence of smelting operations on a scale sufficiently large to permit a fume problem. Around Huelva, Spain, are found more than 30 million tons of slag from lead smelting conducted there by the Romans. Pliny tells US that more than 20,000 slaves were employed in the Iberian mines. Extensive mining and smelting by the Romans in England and Wales were coincident with the Iberian proceedings. These metallurgical operations were upon a sufficiently large scale to produce marked results both upon the surrounding country and the smelter workers, but, as they were those of a conqueror upon conquered soil, conducted by slaves, imperial Rome failed to recognize that such a thing as a smoke problem did or could arise, and whatever fume question there may have been at that time remained a question only to those who had no chance to answer any phase of it. The smelting operations of the Romans extended over about 400 years, and little is recorded of lead and copper smelting from that time until the 16th century. From the revival beginning at this period up to the present century, the growth of smelting has been comparatively gradual. In Great Britain, smelting was conducted almost wholly in localities where metallurgical operations were of paramount importance, and the communities .that grew up in smelter localities were due to and dependent upon the mines and smelters. This fact had much to do with the comparative freedom of British smelting from burdensome fume litigation and legislation. To a lesser degree these conditions applied to the German operations which, when coupled with the further fact that most of the early German operations were to a greater or less degree fiscal workings of Prussia, Saxony and Brunswick-Hanover, accounts for

THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. Production of crude petroleum in Mexico during 1935 totaled approximately 40,082,000 bbl., an increase of 1,925,000 bbl. over the previous year. Successful development continued in the Poza Rica field during the year, increasing production in that area from 3,708,000 bbl. in 1934 to 9,542,000 in 1935. The output of the South fields (Golden Lane) area decreased by 3,000,000 bbl. during the year, and the heavy-oil district of the Northern fields by 1,500,000 bbl. Production in the Tehuantepec fields showed a slight gain. Production of natural gasoline increased from 430,000 to 600,000 bbl. in 1935. Crude run to stills in local refineries is estimated at 30,000,000 bbl., some 4,000,000 bbl. more than in the previous year. Exports of crude and refined products were approximately 22,000,000 bbl., or 2,000,000 bbl. less than in 1934. Exclusive of ships bunkers, domestic consumption increased about 900,000 bbl. during the year, reaching an estimated total of 14,500,000 barrels. Only 74 wells were completed, as compared to 148 in 1934 and 91 in 1933. In proven areas 58 completions resulted in 33 producers and 25 failures. In northeastern Mexico, near the United States border, six wildcat wells were completed, all of which gave little or no encouraging results, except Rancheria No. 3, near Camargo, which is a fair-sized gas well. Four wildcats were drilled just northeast of the Northern fields (heavy-oil district), all of which were failures. A deep test was completed a short distance southeast of the Golden Lane (South fields) in Palo Blanco, which encountered small production not sufficient to exploit. On the Isthmus of Tehuantepec a wildcat well was completed for an estimated initial production of 2000 bbl. daily, a short distance south of the old Jalapa field, which was perhaps the most important new development of the year. Four other wildcats drilled in the Isthmus district resulted in failures. The Bauschinger effect, or rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve upon reloading, represents a temporary apparent softness that is more pronounced at large strains than small and for complete unloading than for partial unloading. Interrupted creep tests on copper exhibit a similar temporary softness (high creep rate) upon reloading. The fact that the strainwise dying-out time of these effects is the same in both tensile and creep tests shows that they are related. Thus, the term Bauschinger effect appears to embrace behavior following partial or complete unloading and reloading in addition to behavior following reversed loading. It is suggested that the term may properly apply also to certain creep behaviors following a small load decrement. INTERRUPTED tensile tests at low temperatures show1 a rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve for reloading, which indicates a temporarily low deformation resistance. In the absence of recovery, the curve soon rises to the value that would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. The rounding of the reloading tensile curve has sometimes been referred to1 as the Bauschinger effect, although the term is more commonly applied to low deformation resistance in compression following tensile prestrain. The unusually broad usage of the term Bauschinger eflect in ref. 1 seems justified by the obvious interconnection of the various behaviors to which it has been applied.' In fact, the following discussion will indicate that still broader usage might be desirable. The Bauschinger effect is common at room temperature but apparently disappears at higher temperatures.2 Interrupted creep tests and tensile tests were made on certified OFHC copper (nongaseous impurities exclusive of silver were 0.004 pct), cold drawn 84 pct to ½ in. diam, and annealed at 600" (about 0.025 mm grains) or 850°C (about 0.2 mm grains). The tests were made in standard creep or tensile machines, using an O.S. Peters microformer-type extensometer or, for the small plastic strains, a special arrangement employing General Electric magnetic gage heads.' Interrupted creep tests at room temperature show3,4 an initial softness after reloading, manifested by an initial creep rate that is higher than that which would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. Fig. 1 shows some typical examples. This effect is apparently temporary (as is that in tensile tests): in four of the five tests shown, the log rate vs strain curve becomes parallel to an

The process of solvent extraction.(or liquid-liquid extraction) is a separation technique involving mass transfer across a phase boundary, and as such is not limited to metal transfer from an aqueous to a non-aqueous phase, or, vice versa. We shall here, however, restrict ourselves to the application of the solvent extraction technique to metallurgical processing. Basically, the process of solvent extraction as applied to metals separation and purification requires only that a specific metal be transferred from, initially, an aqueous phase to a non-aqueous phase, followed by a reversal of this transfer. Not much more is known about concrete today than was known to the Romans. For all the research only better tools have resulted to measure the quality of the materials that go into it." In this paper "some of the materials for lightweight concrete and their characteristics are considered and effort is made to indicate their effect on the end result — a structure of lightweight concrete." Lightweight concrete had noble beginnings. It is believed that the first specification for lightweight concrete was written by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the early years of his reign, 117-138 AD. Hadrian, was an engineer by trade and an Emperor by adoption. He took considerable interest in the structures sponsored during his reign, even to the point of working out the structural details and preparing working drawings for some of the more prominent works in the vicinity of Rome. In order to reduce the dead weight of the 140 ft diam dome of the Pantheon he specified that the lightweight structural concrete members supporting this concrete and tile composite dome were to be fabricated from a concrete containing pumice and scoria. Still standing after 18 centuries of abuse, this structure has been described as the master effort of a great structural genius, the ultimate achievement of Roman engineering skill.' The Romans were the first to employ many concrete techniques we think of as modem innovations. Some unnamed superintendent noted that when a carefully measured amount of pigs blood was measured into each batch of concrete during mixing, the concrete was more durable and exhibited much better resistance to freezing and thawing climates. He no doubt, attributed this success to the appeasement of one of the gods who in return provided protection for the building containing this sacrificial offering in its walls. It is known today that the blood-entrained air in the concrete tends to make mixtures more workable, resistant to moisture penetration and more resistant to frost damage.

The manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In certain respects they have a strong resemblance to those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia, but in this paper no careful comparison with them can be made. Viewed from the present condition of the manganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments. Youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide in the rocks of both groups. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate degree of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows, largely of basic types. This has been named the Birrim System. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. Since these non-fossiliferous strata at many plaees are of a character which in many parts of the world are suitable for the preservation of fossils, and which contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim System have normally a northeast-southwest strike, and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts. From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed diagonally across their strike for upwards of 600 miles, to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence they probably extend much farther into French territory.

Sharp declines of initial production of both oil and gas occurred in West Virginia during 1943. There was only a small decrease in the number of ncw wells, but these wells did not show the quantities of oil and gas that might have been expected. The same situation prevailed both as to routine drilling in old pools and as to exploratory wildcat wells. Out of 42 wildcats drilled, 19 resulted in small commercial gas wells, and 2 in small commercial oil. No new oil pools were discovered, but the proved limits of several old pools were considerably extended, giving 4200 acres of newly proved oil territory. Three new gas pools, resulting from discoveries made in 1942 and former years, came into definite activity. The newly proved gas territory in these and in various extensions of old pools is 39,000 acres or more. It is doubtful whether the newly proved reserves of either oil or gas will balance current withdrawals. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 696 new wells were drilled, resulting in 82 oil wells with 919 bbl. of daily new production; 475 gas wells with 454,735,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 137 dry holes. Also, 57 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 3 bbl. and 11,484,000 cu. it. of added production. On the new wells, the oil average was 11.2 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 957,337 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.68 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 14.03 per cent. The greatly decreased average initial gas-well production in 1943, as compared with 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well in 1942, is directly attributable to the abrupt decline of completions in the Charleston gas field, which reached its peak in 1942. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the U. S. Rureau of Mines as 3,349,000 bbl., as compared with 3,574,000 bbl. in 1942. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 210,000, 000,000 cu. ft., compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 215,193,-000,000 cu. ft.* in 1942.

LOCATION THE Ozark region occupies a large part of the southern half, of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas and comparatively small areas in northeast Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, and southern Illinois. . It is a roughly elliptical plateau which has been deeply dissected by stream erosion, and which slopes imperceptibly into the prairie regions to the north, east, and west, but which terminates rather abruptly along the Arkansas River on the south and Tertiary lowland to the southeast. The-Boston Mountains extending for a distance of some 200 miles (321 -km.) along the Arkansas River rise to an elevation of 2000 ft. (609 m.), forming the most prominent topographic feature of the region. The so-called St. Francois Mountains in St. Francois, Madison, and adjoining counties in southeast Missouri, form a prominent but more restricted topographic feature, the highest point rising to an elevation of 1800 ft. (548 m.).. The remainder of the region is largely a plateau area varying from 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) in elevation. STRATIGRAPHY The region is underlain chiefly by sedimentary formations, which outcrop in roughly concentric bands around a comparatively restricted area of igneous rocks in the St. Francois Mountain district. Although located geographically near the eastern edge of the Ozarks, the St. Francois Mountains have apparently suffered the greatest orogenic movement and the lowest formations of the succession are exposed in their immediate vicinity. The various sedimentary formations of the region do not show any considerable metamorphism and have suffered little change since consolidation. With the exception of a few basic intrusions in Ste. Genevieve County and a pegmatite dike in Camden County, Missouri, there is no evidence of igneous-action, since the first sedimentary beds were deposited.

H. McD. Lorain says in regard to his son, Captain S. H. Lorain; "It might be of interest to you to know that, although but 23 years of age, my son is captain of Co. C 107th U. S. Engineers, Thirty-second Division. He landed in France about the middle of February, 1918, and was commissioned a captain on Sept. 5, 1918. He started for the front the latter part of June and was there continuously until the armi-stice was signed, on Nov. 11, being on the front lines in the Argonne at that time. He is, at present, in Coblenz, Germany, with the Army of Occupation. Although much of his work was clone under artillery and machine-blur fire, as well as airplane bombs and fire, he escaped without a scratch. Once, he was the only one of a group who escaped without a scratch from an exploding shell." Lieut. Bernard H. Lasky, on a post card received a short time ago, gave the following brief record of his military career. "I have been serving with the 316th Engineers in France and in Flanders and had the satisfaction of being in the last big drive in Belgium which sent the enemy beyond Avaenarde and did much to increase their gait on their way to Brussels. On Oct. 1, I received a commission as second lieutenant and was assigned to Co. C of the 316th Engineers."

VERY little information is available in the literature concerning the solubility of magnesium in titanium. Aust and Pidgeon&apos; report the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.0025 pct at 650°C and 0.015 pct at 850°C. X-ray diffraction studies failed to detect any evidence of solid solubility. Based on the fact that the addition of titanium to magnesium increases the c/a ratio of magnesium, Busk&apos; suggested that the Mg-Ti system, like the Mg-Zr, is a peritectic. Eisenreich- eported the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.003 pct at 655°C and 0.064 pct at 760°C. Removal of hydrogen from the melt increased the solubility of titanium to 0.115 pct at 800°C. Eisenreich proposes a peritectic-type diagram for the high magnesium side of the system. Recent work&apos; with Ti-Mg diffusion couples indicate that the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium is extremely small and that there is limited solid solubility of magnesium in titanium. Experimental work on the Ti-Mg system is complicated by the fact that the boiling point of magnesium is considerably below the melting point of titanium. Consequently, the usual alloying methods are impractical. Alloying was accomplished in this investigation by sheath-rolling compressed compacts." The alloys were made from titanium sponge and high purity magnesium. Chemical analysis of the sponge showed 0.04 pct Mg, <0.005 pct Al, <0.001 pct Cu, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Mn, <0.0025 pct Ni, 0.007 pct Si, <0.005 pct V, and <0.01 pct Zn. All heat treating was conducted in a protective atmosphere by encapsulating the specimens in fused silica ampules under a partial pressure of helium. Equilibrium was achieved by holding the specimens at temperature for periods of 24 to 120 hr. The alloys were hot rolled, cold rolled, and annealed prior to solution heat treatment. Fig. 1 shows the constitutional diagram obtained for the Ti-Mg system up to 1.5 pct Mg. Oxygen was known to be present in the alloys; therefore, it is necessary to consider the alloys as ternary rather than binary and the diagram should be viewed as a plot of a section through the Ti-Mg-0 system. Other investigatorso have shown that the addition of oxy- gen to titanium stabilizes the a phase. The data presented in Fig. 1 indicate that the addition of magnesium to titanium tends to stabilize the p phase. Armour Research Foundation7 has shown that the addition of magnesium to zirconium lowers the a transus and is classified as a p stabilizer in that system. Magnesium is soluble in solid titanium to the extent of at least 1.5 pct in both the a and /3 phases. No intermetallic compounds or magnesium-rich phases were observed either by light microscopy or X-ray diffraction. However, this does not negate the possibility that such phases exist at higher alloy concentrations.

An account of the operation of the Noranda smelter covering the period from December, 1927, when the smelter started, until December, 1929, was given in a paper published by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy early in 1930.&apos; The object of the present paper is to review matters of interest in the original paper and to describe the present construction and operation of the smelter, with particular reference to the reverberatory-furnace practice. The Noranda smelter was built by Noranda Mines, Ltd., from the designs of A. E. Wheeler, consulting metallurgist of New York, for the reduction of ores and concentrates from the Horne mine and to treat, on a custom basis, ores and concentrates from other mines in the Rouyn district. The smelter is at Noranda, about 330 miles directly north of Toronto. Construction work was started in June, 1926, and copper was first produced in December, 1927. The smelter was built throughout as two duplicate units, each with a rated capacity of 500 tons of ore per day. Operations were started with one unit and after several months it was found that one unit alone could smelt 1000 tons of ore a day. At that time there was only one hoisting shaft, No. 3, and its hoisting capacity and the capacity of the original crushing plant were insufficient to supply ore for the two units at the increased tonnage. Accordingly No. 4 shaft was sunk and a new crushing plant provided to handle the ore hoisted there. Operating two units at capacity also required the installation of two more converters to treat the additional quantity of matte produced. This work was completed in the latter part of November, 1929, and since then both smelter units have been operating continuously. In 1928, a mill to treat 500 tons a day of concentrating ore was completed. Since then the concentrator capacity has been increased twice, and at present 2000 tons a day of ore are being concentrated. The layout of the surface plant of the mine, concentrator and smelter is shown in Fig. 1 and the general plan in Fig. 2. The smelter is shown in more detail in Fig. 3. SILVER-cadmium near the composition AgCd shows three equilibrium phases. As with 13 brass, the high temperature phase is disordered body-centered cubic (8) and the low temperature phase has the ordered CsCl structure . However, there is an intermediate temperature phase which is hexagonal close-packed ((). In a recent paper, Speich and Mack&apos; report on a study of the Ag-Cd eutectoid near the AgCd composition. Unfortunately, the phase diagram upon which they base some of their conclusions is incorrect. That diagram is taken from the Metals Handbook&apos; and the error is that the 0 and ( phases have been interchanged. The Handbook gives the low temperature phase as hexagonal (designated 5) and the intermediate temperature phase as cubic ordered (designated . The error may be typographical or it may be one of confusion resulting from the use of 5, ,, and 0 for the intermediate phase in various papers. A careful search of the literature reveals that a number of authors have indicated the correct relative positions of the 13, 5, and 0 phases. The comprehensive work of Fraenkel and Wolf clearly stated that the high and the low temperature phases are either identical or are very similar. olander,&apos; on the basis of electrochemical measurements, showed that the 13 phase is disordered and the 1 phase (designated 8" in his paper and in refs. 3 and 5) is ordered. Further work by Durrant5 using thermal and metallographic analyses provided a more precise phase diagram. A summary of these works was given by Hansen6 and shows the correct relative positions of the phases. Owen, Rogers, and Guthrie7 located correctly the upper two phases by X-ray diffraction.
