The earliest U. S. patent on a crushing machine was issued in 1830. The device incorporated the drop hammer principle later used in the famous stamp mill, whose history is so intimately linked with that of the golden age of American Mining. Eli Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock-breaker --the Blake jaw crusher--patented in 1858. The idea of his mechanical principle, the powerful-toggle linkage, was so sound that today the Blake -type jaw crusher is the standard by which all jaw crushers are judged. In 1881, Philetus Gates was granted a patent on a machine which included in its design all the essential features of the modern gyra tory crusher. For some years after these pioneer machines were developed, crushing requirements were quite simple. All underground mining and open-pit quarrying was done by hand with tonnages and rock sizes generally small. In the milling of precious metal ores, stamp mills were popular as the final reduction machine. The stamps were fed with an ore size readily produced by one break through small gyratory or jaw crushers. Even in large underground mining operations, there was no demand for large crushers; and increasing tonnage requirements were met by duplicating the small units. The Homestake gold mine in South Dakota was a good example, where in 19 15 twenty -two small Gates gyratory crushers were used to prepare the ore for the batteries of 2,500 stamps. Open pit mines and the introduction of the steam shovel created a demand for larger crushers, which led to the development of a gyratory with an 18 in. (457 mm) receiving opening. Up to this time, the jaw crusher had kept pace with the gyratory, both from the standpoint of receiving opening and capacity; but now the gyratory stepped into a 15-year lead with larger and larger sizes. This trend toward large primary crushers started just before the turn of the century, and in 1910 crushers with 48 in. (1.22 m) receiving openings were being built. About this time, the jaw crusher was revived in a great contribution to primary crushing by the introduction of the 84 in. by 60 in. (2. 13 by 1. 52 m) machine. This crusher was usually followed by a 24 in. (6 10 mm) opening gyratory crusher for secondary breakage, a system which reawakened the industry to the use of the jaw crusher as a primary breaker. It is interesting that although his machines never came into general use, Thomas A. Edison ranks as a pioneer in the development of the large primary breaker. The Pinto Valley digital control system is a supervisory system interfaced with a conventional analog control system. The design criteria, the hardware selection, and the startup of the system in the Pinto Valley concentrator are reported in depth. Examples of data collection application, as well as the present and immediate future implementation of control strategies, are discussed. This paper is a description of the digital data acquisition and control system that is installed at Cities Service's Pinto Valley concentrator.

Sampling methods for feasibility studies are dependent on geological characteristics of the deposit being evaluated. A preliminary geostatistical study is required, taking into account autocorrelation aspects of variables under study in order that sample plan design can be optimized to produce grade and tonnage estimates within stipulated error limits. In general, regular sample distribution is to be aimed for, and regular sample lengths (from drill core or cuttings, for example) are preferred in order to facilitate statistical analysis. Sample plans are modified and improved (either technically or economically), as a sampling program proceeds and additional information is obtained. Bulk samples for metallurgical testing can be evaluated in terms of the variance shown by all such samples in a deposit and the internal variability of grade. Attention to these sources of variability will ensure proper evaluation of pilot test results from bulk samples. In addition, a general mineralogical study of a deposit is an important, often ignored, requirement in a more general but semi-quantitative evaluation of the representativeness of a bulk sample; and, moreover, provides information useful in optimizing plant design.

Modern mineral processing plants could not operate efficiently, or even exist, without instruments which indicate, record, control, and in some cases anticipate the many changes that occur in a process. Even in plants which are operated manually, instruments are used to tell the operator when he should turn a valve or press a handswitch. Accordingly, all mineral processing plant engineering and construction projects must give careful consideration to this area of design activity.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents a "case history" of the steps taken to estimate capital and operating costs for a typical porphyry copper concentrator of ±9,070 metric tons (10,000 short tons) per day capacity. The concentrator described herein is hypothetical, but is based on experience and is, in effect, a composite of several actual projects. The numbers used are illustrative only and do not represent actual costs at any particular concentrator. These numbers are, however, representative of typical milling costs at one point in time, and. are sufficiently accurate to illustrate the cost estimating procedures described in this paper. It is not possible to publish actual, current milling costs and, in any event, actual cost figures quickly become meaningless in today's economic situation with various costs all rising at different rates. The paper is divided into three parts: (1) order-of-magnitude estimate, (2) feasibility study estimate, and (3) discussion of differences between estimated and actual costs.

Selective flotation in nonmetallic systems is often complicated by the presence of iron-bearing silicates occurring as gangue. Minerals such as augite, diopside, hornblende, and tourmaline respond readily to flotation under the same conditions as ore minerals. Mechanisms by which these minerals respond to flotation with anionic collectors must be established if selective separations are to be made in these systems. It was the objective of this investigation to determine the mechanisms involved in the flotation of two pyroxenes, augite and diopside, with potassium oleate. Experimental Materials and Methods Pure potassium oleate, prepared by neutralization of oleic acid with KOH, was used as collector, while reagent-grade HC1 or KOH were used for pH adjustment. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through a mixed-bed ion exchange column, was used in this investigation. Two pyroxenes, [ ], were involved in this work. One member of this class of minerals was augite and was found to contain 3.3% calcium, 4.6% iron, and 9.6% magnesium. The source of this mineral was Tillamook County, Ore. The other pyroxene involved was diopside which contained 8.3% calcium, 2.7% iron, and 7.6% magnesium. The source of this sample was Bancroft, Ont. Microflotation experiments were conducted with a Hallimond cell. Mineral samples were ground dry and sized to 100 x 200 mesh. One-gram charges were conditioned for 3 min in the presence of various additions of potassium oleate. Flotation was conducted for 1 min with a nitrogen flow rate of 50 cm3/min. Microcrystalline silica has been mined in Illinois from the Clear Creek Formation since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Tamms in Alexander County, in the southernmost part of the state. This silica is consumed mainly by the abrasives and coatings industries, but is also sought after for many filler/extender uses. Production has grown with the economy with several new applications overshadowing traditional markets in recent years. Many of these applications are directly or indirectly related to energy saving factors. As a result of the "energy crisis" and "resin crunch," fillers have received a great deal of renewed attention as a desirable way of stretching the available resin supplies. With feedstocks in short supply and shortages existing in the entire petrochemical industry, the use of bulk materials to improve and extend existing resin is becoming an every increasingly important facet of plastics and coatings technology. Silica is the choise of fillers in applications where inertness, hardness, and low absorption are necessary characteristics. Microcrystalline silica has the additional advantage of being relatively easy to grind because the crude ore is a friable rock composed of tiny crystallites, many less than 0.1 u in diameter. Grinding represents a significant energy input in the production of silica flours. With energy costs increasing rapidly, comparable grades of silica flour made from microcrystalline silica have advanced less in price and it is expected this trend will continue in favor of the microcrystalline silica.

Similarities of certain geologic and mineralogic parameters are recognized among the various Philippine porphyry copper deposits. Lowell and Guilbert3 described a model of the typical porphyry copper deposit as the result of comparing numerous Western Hemisphere occurrences. Many of the characteristics of the Philippine porphyry copper deposits differ from the model developed by Lowell and Guilbert. A model of the typical porphyry copper deposit is presented and the characteristics of the Philippine model are compared with those of the Western Hemisphere model. Estimated Philippine copper production in 1975 was 242 446 mt. The total in 1948 was 2091 mt. This represents a 116-fold increase in copper production during the 28-yr period. The Philippines now rank seventh in total world production of copper.

Sampling of an orebody has a number of purposes. In the initial phase, it is necessary to define the limits of the orebody and mineral content to the extent that it can be stated whether it is, in fact, an economic orebody. Also, samples must be generated so that geological and metallurgical evaluations can be made. Finally, when sufficient information concerning the geology, mineralogy, and metallurgy are known, a mining method and plan can be developed and the metallurgical; plants constructed to process the ores as they become available. With today's large, complex open pit copper mines, single sampling methods would be inadequate. Diamond drilling, percussion drilling, underground shafts and drifts all play a part in the total orebody, definition. At Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes mine, sampling and orebody definition.wil1 eventually lead to the existence of three metallurgical processing plants and, perhaps, an underground mining operation. A 30 000 tons per day sulfide concentrator was placed in operation in September 1969 and a 10 000 tons per day oxide leaching plant was placed into service in May 1975. The aim of this presentation is to historically discuss the orebody sampling that has been done at Twin Buttes, briefly describe the orebody, and discuss the analytical methods currently used to assist the geologist, metallurgist and mine planner in their respective evaluations.

Tapadaa is one of several centers of porphyry copper mineralization in northern Sulawesi. Host rocks are mainly varieties of quartz diorite porphyry. Structural control of mineralization is indicated by elongation of the sulfide system (5 x 1 km) parallel to prominent NW-trending structures, but in detail mineralization is strongly influenced by relative age and lithology. Hydrothermal alteration is characterized by widespread occurrence of advanced argillic assemblages and the presence of sodic rather than potassic alkali feldspar. Propylitic alteration surrounds the mineralized area. Phyllic and advanced argillic alteration occur in structurally controlled zones and in limited pervasive areas. Hypogene copper mineralization develops in rocks with sericite-albite alteration and comprises low total sulfide chalcopyrite-bornite or chalcopyrite-pyrite.

The operating experience to date with long distance iron concentrate slurry pipelines at Savage River, in Tasmania, Australia, and Peña Colorada, in Colima, Mex., is discussed. The three pipeline systems currently under construction in Central and South America are described with particular emphasis on the SAMARCO system in Brazil, which will be the world's largest upon completion. General considerations for the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of the slurry pipeline approach to solids transport are discussed with reference to alternative modes of bulk transport. A case study for the Lake Superior Dist. is presented.

A second generation tailings system, consisting of 8 km (5 mile) of large diameter 914- mm (36-in.) po1yethylene pipeline, the bulk of which was laid on a 0.2% grade, has been successfully operated by Lornex Mining Corp. for the past 2 yr. The system was designed to operate as a partial flow pipeline during average flows with the ability to pressurize itself and operate as a pressure pipeline under high flows, or clean itself out under sanding conditions. The system has exceeded design capacity and has had very little downtime. Polyethylene pipe was easily and inexpensively installed and has exhibited superior abrasion resistance characteristics.

The magnetic susceptibilities of samples of natural and artificial hematite and natural goethite were measured by the Faraday method as functions of temperature, magnetizing field strength and particle size. All samples showed weak ferromagnetism, which accounted for large variations in susceptibility with field strength and particle size. Three probable sources of the weak ferromagnetism were identified.

"The richest hill on earth" had its start as a placer gold camp in 1864. The gold was quickly worked out but then silver was discovered in the copper ores in Butte Hill. After ten years as a silver camp, rich copper ore was found in 1881 and the future of Butte was assured. In the early 1960's, the Anaconda Company began the shift from underground mining at Butte to open pit mining of the enormous, low-grade copper deposit surrounding the old high-grade veins which had been worked for over eighty years. Their first primary crusher was a 66 in. by 84 in. (168 m by 2. 13 m) jaw crusher. The pit was expanded at such a rate, however, that its location became endangered. Additionally, the new Clyde Weed concentrator had been built at Butte; and in 1969 construction of a new gyratory installation was started. The primary crusher at the Clyde Weed concentrator is one of the most unusual primary crushers ever put into operation. At times, the ore from the Berkeley pit contains large amounts of timber, pipe, rails, and so forth left in the ore body from the old underground mining operations; and the crusher installation had to be designed so this tramp material could be readily removed ahead of the crusher. Ore is delivered by 100- and 150-ton trucks to two side-by-side dump pockets, each with a capacity of 400 tons. Originally, a hydraulic grapple was installed on the dividing wall between the dump pockets; but it was found that oversize boulders large enough to block the discharge opening at the bottom of each hopper were rapidly covered with other material, and the grapple was unable to reach and remove the large boulders causing the blockage. In addition, the grapple was located in a quite vulnerable position; and it sustained damage from being struck by rock dumped from the trucks. Oversize boulders are now blasted. Underneath each pocket is a vibrating grizzly feeder with the grizzly bars set at 4 in. (102 mm). These feeder-grizzlies are 84 in. (2. 13 m) wide and 32 .ft (9. 75 m) long, with grizzly sections 16 ft (4. 88 m) long. Approximately 75% of the ore passes through the grizzlies and grizzly oversize then drops onto two parallel 6 ft (1. 83 m) wide picking belts. The belts are 3 in. (76 mm) thick and rest on idlers supported by air- filled rubber shock absorbers. At the side of each picking belt is a hydraulic grapple which is used to remove timbers too large to be removed by hand. At times, four men are used to remove timber and tramp iron. Timbers are dropped onto a transverse belt conveyor which discharges into a truck stationed outside the primary crusher building,

Changes in SO2 emission standards will not only influence the cost of supplying energy demands from coal, but also the competitive position of various production regions and the method of mining (surface vs. underground). A multiperiod interregional competition model was utilized to evaluate the interactions between mining capacity, new mine development, coal reserves, mining, processing and transportation costs and equipment availability and SO2 emission standards. The empirical results indicate that not only will costs increase dramatically, but production in eastern as well as western regions that have low sulfur reserves will also increase as sulfur standards become increasingly more strict. Implications of the adjustments in the location of coal mining activity for the processing, transportation, and capital goods markets are also presented.

This paper considers the heavy liquid laboratory tests used to determine the amenability of a potential ore to the heavy media process. The results of the laboratory testing are correlated to actual plant performance and establish design parameters for the heavy media process. These parameters are used in the development of the metallurgical flow sheet and in the sizing of equipment in the metallurgical plant design.

The Pinto Valley, Arizona, plant of Cities Service Company is one of the newest copper producers in the United States, having started production in 1975. It is located a few miles west of Miami, Arizona, on the site of the Castle Dome Mine, a World War II operation which was shut down and its mill later moved and renamed the Copper Cities plant. The Pinto Valley concentrator uses six 18 ft (5. 5 m) diameter by 21 ft (6.4 m) long, 4000 hp, single-stage ball mills, taking crushed ore from four 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard and eight 7 ft shorthead crushers. It has a design capacity of 40,000 stpd but has higher tonnage capability for an expanded concentrator. The copper porphyry-ore is mined by two 15 yd and one 20 yd shovels (11.5 and 15.3 cu m) and is transported to the primary crusher by 150-ton trucks. The dump pocket is relatively shallow (14 ft or 4. 27 m deep); and because of the width necessary for the 150-ton trucks, it was designed to use the ore itself instead of manganese steel as an abrasion- resistant lining, although a heavy steel cap protects the dump pocket top edge. The pocket has a capacity of 300 tons of ore. Water sprays under the dumping positions direct a fog toward the truck being dumped for excellent dust control. Breaking of oversize is done by a hydraulic impact breaker mounted on a hydraulically operated articulated arm situated at the side of the dump pocket. Again because of the shallow pocket, no splitter is used to protect the spider of the 60 in. by 89 in. Traylor gyratory crusher, which is equipped with a hydroset mechanism. Crushed ore at 8 in. (203 mm) drops into the 360 st surge chamber lined with AR plate and then is fed directly to the 60 in. (1.52 m) stock- pile conveyor by an 84 in. by 20 ft (2. 13 m by 6.1 m) four-speed apron feeder at a rate of up to 4000 stph. Early in 1977, Cities Service will replace the four -speed electric drive with a hydraulic pump and motor with infinitely variable speed. They are also studying the replacement of the apron feeder with an 8 ft wide (2.44 m) belt feeder similar to those at Similkameen and Palabora. Peak crushing capacity would then be increased to 5000 stph. The AR plate in the crushed ore pocket was installed in large, rectangular sheets which required much less embedded metal to hold it in place than would the more conventional, smaller arid square pieces of cast manganese steel. For duty in the crushed ore pocket, where wear is not severe, the AR plate is a satisfactory material. The new Palabora Figure-8 crusher also uses this design.

A design procedure for the quantitative estimation of support load requirements in underground mines is presented. The central problem in the design of mine support is one of es¬timating a maximum load that the ground will exert on the support in the coarse of mining. The distribution of stress around mine openings changes as mining progresses. At the time of support installation, the support load is essentially zero. With the passage of time and advance of the face, ground motion loads the support. The finite element method of analysis provides a simple quantitative technique for simulating the effects of mining and face advance on support load requirements. In particular, the maximum support load can be estimated by the proposed design procedure.

Fundamentals of cyclones are reviewed briefly, where a typical cyclone is considered. Graphical cyclone data available in the literature have been converted to mathematical equations for convenience. Preliminary selection and design procedures for both cyclones and pumps are provided, and a sample calculation for a hypothetical grinding circuit is covered in some detail. In general, cyclone and pump suppliers should be consulted for definitive design purposes. Some cyclone suppliers currently employ digital computers for definitive design to ensure greater accuracy.

The rapid expansion of the phosphate fertilizer industry in conjunction with the projected shortage and spiraling price increase of uranium has greatly renewed interest in wet- process phosphoric acid as a significant source of uranium. Two attractive solvent extraction processes for recovering uranium from the acid have recently been developed and tested through bench-scale at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. One of the processes has been successfully tested on a pilot-plant scale at phosphate plants; the second process, which offers several potential advantages, still needs additional testing. The merits of each process are discussed.
