"The development of a predictive geometallurgical model is a multidisciplinary and iterative task that involves both discovery and integration aspects. In this paper, the authors discuss the concepts of geometallurgical modelling in terms of the underlying relationships that are used to connect geology, metallurgy and economic value, and how the early-stage preparation of a spatial geometallurgical model enhances project value and provides a sound basis for future studies and test work programs.Hot Chili’s (copper-gold-molybdenum) Productora Project, which is located in northern Chile, is a porphyry-copper style deposit that can be exploited using open pit mining and preparation of a saleable concentrate from fresh ore, as well as heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) extraction of copper from oxide ores. To enhance project value in the Productora prefeasibility study (PFS), Hot Chili developed a geometallurgical model that was used to predict the process responses of both sulfide and oxide ores. The Productora model incorporates test results from mineralogical, metallurgical and comminution testing, as well as other studies completed on a suite of samples collected from the many geological domains of the deposit.Using Bond Work Index and Abrasion Index proxies in the geometallurgical model, Hot Chili estimated the variability of sulfide ore throughput and comminution costs. Heap leach acid consumption in oxide ore was estimated from drill hole calcium concentrations. The model was then used in mine scheduling to identify high and low throughput or high and low acid ore zones so that the processing of these zones could be advanced or deferred to improve net present value (NPV). Additionally, the cost benefits of preparing an early-stage geometallurgy model were quantified through a comparison to a conventional model that was based on test work averages.CITATION:King, G S and Macdonald, J L, 2016. The mine evaluation process, composed of the designing, planning and valuation of a mine project, is, among other variables, based on an estimated orebody model. However, as the information from the drill holes is limited, it is impossible to know with certainty the mineral content in each block within the estimated block model. Consequently, uncertainty about the value of metal grades, or other geological attributes, arises because of the lack of information at unsampled locations. This is one of the reasons why, in any mine operation, there will always exist a divergence between estimated and real values. Cut-off grade optimisation is the process used to determine the operating mining strategy (long-term production scheduling) that will maximise the total profit value (normally referred as the net present value (NPV)) of a mine operation. This is done by defining a dynamic cut-off grade policy which is constrained by the production capacity of the mining, mill and refining.Real options is a type of contract, written on real assets such as mining, oil and other natural resource industries, that gives you the right but not the obligation to exercise the contract. It is based on operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine decision makers to react to either good or bad operational and economic events in the future. But, what do geostatistics and cut-off grade optimisation have to do with the application of real options in a mine project evaluation process? The objective of this paper is to answer the previous question by showing how geostatistics combined with cut-off grade optimisation are key tools for corporate/managerial decision makers, which allow them not only to analyse the resource/reserves of their projects, but also to generate operational strategies that can maximise project value by minimising the downside risk due to ore tonnes and grade uncertainties, while achieving operational and physical constraints such as mining and processing capacities. A real copper grade open pit mine project is used as a case study.

Geoffrey Blainey's historical account of the mining activity on the west coast of Tasmania, æThe Peaks of LyellÆ documents the changes over 130 years of activity in the region. Commissioned by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, emphasis is placed upon the development of the Mount Lyell Mine in Queenstown. Chapter 19 æWidening HorizonsÆ details the review the Mount Lyell Company undertook in 1904/05 to ensure the future of the operation, following the pessimistic outlook regarding diminishing reserves and poor grade ore. The analogies documented between the Mount Lyell Company at that time, and Gold Mines of Australia 90 years on are remarkable, with both companies demonstrating a commitment to the Mount Lyell area through active exploration, the proactive search for alternative technology and the recognition of the valuable human resource. As Blainey writes (Blainey, 1993), æwith its expanding chemical works, its huge Tasmanian mines, its railways and smelter, its coke works and its mine crusade, Mount Lyell was probably one of the nation's five great industrial companies in 1906 or 1907. This brief phase of industrial and mining expansion had its seed in the threat of extinction . . .Æ After a number of reprieves, the Mount Lyell mine did stop production in 1994, but that only provided an impetus for a review and rebirth.

"Geometallurgy brings together geologists, mine planners and process engineers to extract meaningful mineralogical and textural information from an orebody, with a view to predicting its metallurgical response. Preferably, automated analytical techniques, which provide mineralogical and textural information, should process a large number of samples quickly, relatively inexpensively and reliably. Microfocus X-ray computed tomography (µXCT) is capable of producing 3D volumetric information on texture and mineralogy that satisfies some of these criteria. µXCT has been used extensively to study the porosity and internal pore structure of iron ore pellets as part of downstream processing. It has not been widely applied to earlier mineralogical and textural analysis of unprocessed ore, due to the limited ability of X-rays to penetrate high-density samples. Solvent extraction of cobalt from an ammoniacal ammonium sulphate medium was carried out using Di(2-Ethyl Hexyl) phosphoric acid in kerosene as diluent. The effect of ammonium chloride and ammonium sulphate on the extraction efficiency was studied. The extracted species in the ammonium chloride and sulphate systems were CoAz2HA.NH4CI and CoA3.HA.2(NH4)2SO4, respectively. Ammonia scrubbing and cobalt stripping studies were carried out from loaded and ammonia free organic Respectively.

Two drill core samples of haematite/goethite from the Robe River (Western Australia) channel iron ore deposits (CID) were dated using (U-Th)/He methods in order to constrain the timing of iron oxide formation and thereby provide a temporal context for CID genesis. (U-Th)/He ages (He ages) from these samples range from the late Oligocene to Late Miocene and despite a high degree of scatter, they corroborate relationships expected from the internal ooidal stratigraphy: For individual ooids, the ages from haematitic core are older than or indistinguishable from the ages of the surrounding goethitic cortex. The goethitic cortices are, in turn, older than the ferruginised wood fragments recovered from the cementing goethitic matrix.The data suggest the following succession of ore formation phases:• Haematitic cores in ooids of both samples formed in the Early to Middle Miocene.• Goethitic cortices of both samples formed in the late Middle to early Late Miocene. This appears to be the age of goethite cortex formation regardless of depth in the core, which does not support the top-down infill model, genetic model proposed by Heim et al (2006).• Wood fragments form a prominent component of the matrix and were ferruginised during the Late Miocene. Thus the data suggest that the unique environmental conditions for the CID formation existed during the Miocene.A methodological implication of this study is that the temperature utilised for He-extraction from iron oxides has a critical impact on the mobility of parent nuclides. The typical ~1100°C laser heating used for crystalline minerals like apatite or zircon induces loss of U and Th and results in erroneously old ages.

The T33-34 blast, the first major blast at Mount Isa Mines, broke 1,360,000 tonnes of copper ore using 349 tonnes of explosives. The original concept of firing T33, T34, T35 and U37 separately was changed during the life of the project due to adverse ground conditions. These conditions also caused the stoping method to be modified after the firing of the stopes had started. To stabilise the two stopes T33 and T34 where large fall off was occurring, rib pillars were left in the original slot. This caused the blast design to be more complex as these rib pillars had to "lead" the blast. The implication of such a large blast on the underground and surface environment was thoroughly investigated and precautions taken. The charging time of the blast was six weeks. Hook-up was started four days before the blast and continued until two hours prior to the blast. Detailed scheduling was carried out of other work that had to be done in the 24 hours before the blast to ensure that there were no delays in the firing.

Teleoperation is one method by which an operator can remotely control and monitor a vehicle. The operator monitors the status and progress of the remote vehicle by watching the video transmitted from one or more cameras which are mounted on the vehicle. In the case of an LHD, it will be fitted with three cameras. For a twin-boom Jumbo, four cameras are mounted on the drill, three of which will have remote pan, tilt, 15x zoom, focus and lens cleaning controls. The advantage of teleoperation is that an operator can stand in the drive and send the remote vehicle around a corner, completely out of sight and still clearly see what is happening. This means that an LHD returns with a full bucket and a Jumbo can be operated from a safe distance. Standing in the drive teleoperating vehicles, exposes the operator to passing traffic including the remote vehicle. There are two solutions to this problem. One is to equip the operator with a Nautilus æBuddyÆ jacket which will help to protect them from all vehicles. The other is to move the operator into a safe room or area, away from the fumes, the noise and the traffic. In this comfortable, less stressful environment, the operator will be more productive and less likely to accidentally damage the vehicle. The operatorÆs æsafeÆ room does not have to be a formal control room, it can be any area which has AC or DC power available and is large enough to contain a chair and a 1.5 m x 0.75 m table. The æsafeÆ room can be on the surface or underground, it does not matter to the operation of the Nautilus Equipment. If the LHDÆs, trucks, locomotives, etc are automatically guided from origin to destination, the operator is free to operate several vehicles at a time, performing only those tasks which are too difficult for a computer to do by itself.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. This paper looks at the past, present and not too distant future of grinding mill relining.Since the adoption of autogenous grinding (AG) mills and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills as the primary ore reducing devices in the comminution circuit, plant shutdown frequency and duration has largely been driven by the liner maintenance requirements of these mills.The past 30 years have seen the introduction of many technologies to reduce relining times and frequencies. Advanced relining systems have been developed which include single and twin Mill Relining Machines, capable of placing large (up to 8000 kg) liners, high energy recoilless THUNDERBOLT Hammers, and high capacity Feed Chute Transporters. Despite these advances, today many of the hazards associated with mill relining remain and reline times still vary considerably between mine sites. A sophisticated discrete event simulation program, designed to analyse the mill relining process, has revealed the dominant influences on reline times of crew performance and of the need for safe access to larger segments of the mill.A new generation of advanced and semi-automated technologies is currently being tested that will address these remaining challenges. Early-Archaean (3.26 Ga) volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits located within the low strain and sub-prehnite-pumpellyite metamorphic-grade Strelley greenstone belt, East Pilbara, Western Australia, contain exceptionally well preserved sulphide textures which are directly analogous to those of sulphide chimneys formed by black smokers at present day submarine hydrothermal vents. The VMS deposits are associated with seafloor alteration zones in and below silica-carbonate laminites, at the top of tholeiitic to calc-alkaline intermediate and felsic rocks. VMS mineralisation comprises stratabound Zn-rich sulphide lenses with significant Cu and barite, and variable Pb and Ag, above Cu-rich stringer zones, all of which are similar to Phanerozoic polymetallic or Kuroko VMS deposits. Sulphide-sulphate mineralisation implicates hydrothermal discharge into sulphate-bearing ocean waters, ruling out a globally anoxic Archaean hydrosphere. The volcanic rocks and co-magmatic sub-volcanic intrusion hosting the VMS deposits are characterised by the conjunction of LILE>LREE>HREE, and Phanerozoic La/Yb with negative normalised anomalies of Nb, P and Ti, consistent with derivation via subduction zone hydrous metasomatism fusing the mantle lithosphere.

Seismic systems are a tool for the monitoring and forecasting the rock mass response to excavation. Common issues encountered at mine site audits and reviews are: how to design an effective seismic system, implementation of the design, interpretation of seismic source results and understanding the reliability of the seismic source. These issues are often a function of several items including: • Experience of site personnel in undertaking seismic system design. • Personnel not envisioning multiple phases of system expansion to understand system robustness issues. • System design/expansion occurring in response to damaging seismic activity rather than planned expansion of a system • The mine access development is often localised in comparison to the total orebody being mined hence, planning sensors in longholes in advance of development rather than in short holes close to development will improve the three-dimensional aspect of the network. • Limited site processing of the seismic event data, hence engineers do not see the uncertainty associated with event location, size, source and system layout. Mine site users require a framework to appreciate the challenges and limitations in locating large events. For example, event locations are given as precise measurements (to the nearest centimetre) whereas the volume of deformation resulting in the event often has dimensions of tens of metres or more (as defined by the source radius). A stronger awareness of the uncertainty of rock mass yield within large seismic sources will assist site users in the interpretation of rock mass damage. The encountered design and implementation errors are reviewed and discussed with a practical set of rules presented to provide a robust seismic system that provides consistent results and increases the user’s understanding of uncertainty in source location and size. The authors’ experience across multiple mine sites, seismic systems and damaging seismic events over a 30 year period has been summarised into practical rules for site personnel of all experience levels.

Through partnering with mining customers, DYNO has been able to develop some specific technologies that benefit blasting operations particularly in underground mining. Some of these areas are: 1. Cost allocation and product tracking systems; 2. Borehole video surveys of breakthrough blastholes; 3. Borehole video photography for logging VRM blastholes; 4. Toe-load uphole loading for sublevel cave mining operations; 5. 3D blast modelling for underground ring blasting. This paper outlines these developments in the context of a Canadian underground metalliferous mine.

Linear interpolation of geo-related variables is important to different aspects of mining engineering such as long and short-term mine planning. The ore deposit description attained from spatial modeling of blast hole datasets has been widely taken into account, particularly, for short-term mine design and grade control, so as to define the ultimate destination of a mined block. It is approved in practice that making the wrong decision leads to losing a huge amount of money for choosing the destination of a mined block. In the case of complex ore deposits, the issue of estimation of variables in the region is questionable and somehow tedious. Due to this fact, modeling those complications in the co-spatial behavior of the grades in multi-element deposits prompts one to employ enhanced geostatistical techniques. Traditional approaches of this purpose such as polygon, inverse distance weighted and even (co)-kriging approaches, are incapable of reproducing those complexities such as non-linearity, heteroscedasticity and geological constraint that frequently exist among the variables of interest in those deposits. Another difficulty in employing those linear interpolations in grade estimation is smoothing effect, in which the estimated grades are over and under estimated. The prime aim of the Campbell Mine project was to develop a 3D geological model for the Campbell-Red Lake system to contribute to an exploration model for the region. The base data is composed of over 60 years of geological data covering an area of 16 by 8 km, and from surface down to 1830 m depth. This paper concentrates on the methods used in the GeoSpace system for the processing, integration, display and interpretation of such a large and diverse data set. A block model was developed that recorded the relative frequency of each geological feature within each block. The data input for the block models were based on recoding of the Campbell Mine drilling and channel sample databases into lithological, alteration and structural subsets. The value for each geological characteristic inserted into each block is calculated from all available data that falls within the block. Relative and absolute comparisons of the individual variables provide a targeted outcome from which the blocks are coloured for visual inspection. Different combinations of variable comparisons can be evaluated so that required features are highlighted for interpretation. Blocks are displayed to illuminate the ædominantÆ rock type, according to a formula that may be varied interactively to display the features required by the geologist. This flexibility allows rapid remodelling of lithological distributions, commonly highlighting minor lithological packages not readily visualised in, and interpreted from, drillhole traces alone. The 3D geological model was built from the drillhole datasets and old mine plans utilising standard 3D mining, GIS and database software, with several iterations of plan and sectional interpretation. Near surface bedrock geological interpretations were further constrained by low level aeromagnetic data. The Geospace approach employs an innovative technique for visualisation of the distribution of lithological packages and alteration via block modelling. The method utilises the block model format of data handling as it is considered to be more visible than drilling, flexible enough to incorporate a wide range of data sources, and allows for spatial proximity relationships to be investigated. The method is a simple form of processing large data sets so that results are clearly visible. The calculation is much more rapid than estimation procedures, and does not have any requirement for geostatistical interpretation which is also time consuming. Geospace is not unique to any mine environment software and it is expected to be able to be performed in any system. The proper portrayal of the internal structure of the mineralised body will provide practical input to exploration and mining principally in the areas of resource estimation, exploration vectoring and ore/waste characterisation and may be incorporated with other data to include mine support and mine scheduling.
