Applied mineralogy involves conducting investigations on ores, minerals and materials to solve problems encountered in mining, metallurgy, processing, industrial minerals, environment, health and other fields. The investigations are performed to determine the mineral behaviours during processing by using every mineral and ore characterisation technique and appropriate instruments. As the field is young, new techniques and instruments are still being developed. This paper attempts to convey the scope of the field by:describing the capabilities of the respective research instruments for determining mineral characteristics, summarising investigations of gold as an example of applied mineralogy studies of precious metals, andpresenting a case history where applied mineralogists worked closely with mineral processing engineers on a base metal ore and mill products to help the engineers optimise their processes for maximum recoveries.

Over the past ten years, the mining industry has witnessed the introduction of a new and innovative mine filling technique known as paste fill, which consists of placing full stream tailings with small amounts of binder and water into underground stopes. Paste fill has benefits over traditional backfill methods, such as higher solids contents than hydraulic fill and easier transportation than rock fill. From a geotechnical perspective, the behaviour of very fine material in a fully saturated state can be complex, particularly when binder is added. Previously, there has been no rigorous solution to understanding the paste fill deposition process, resulting in uncertainty regarding critical aspects such as barricade load calculations. This uncertainty has the obvious consequences of potential barricade failures (including at least 12 over the past four years), and for many operations attempts to deal with this uncertainty has led to excessively conservative filling schedules, restricting production. This paper presents an application of Minefill-2D, the first rigorous model capable of representing the paste fill deposition process. The model couples the processes of material accretion, consolidation and cement hydration to calculate the distribution of stress around a stope (including the total stress applied to barricade structures) during filling. Minefill-2D is a finite element numerical program, which has been verified using laboratory element tests, centrifuge tests and in situ measurements (Helinski, 2008). The authors present a sensitivity analysis, carried out using the model, to demonstrate some of the critical and less critical aspects relating to paste backfill deposition. The results of this sensitivity analysis are used to devise a fill management strategy that can be utilised to minimise the risk of barricade failures and maximise fill rates where appropriate.

This paper presents a three-dimensional analysis of a trapezoidal-shaped segmental tunnel lining for a recent tunnelling project in Sydney. Two- dimensional analyses, hand calculations and equipment selection defined the lining geometry and loads. The analysis, which was undertaken using 3DEC (Itasca), included a complete ring of six segments bolted together to assess the impact of imperfectly built rings. Asymmetry was induced in the analysis by unfavourable positioning of segments within construction tolerances. Model output includes displacement and stress within the entire ring and normal, shear and bending moments at the joints. For the case analysed, the results suggest a 10 mm construction tolerance increases normal and shear stresses along the radial joints by approximately 25 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively and up to a doubling of the induced moments.

Acid rock drainage (ARD), commonly found in vicinities of sulfidic mines, possess properties capable of widely affecting the surrounding environment by acidification and heavy metal pollution. In most ARD treatments, various alkaline sources are used to neutralise the acid produced. Utilisation of highly alkaline fly ashes instead of raw materials is a cost-effective alternative, which lately have become increasingly popular. In laboratory batch experiments, neutralising capacity of fly ash was studied during 20 days. ARD was added to the fly ash once a day, for each increment the liquid to solid ratio (L/S ratio) was increased. At an early stage of the experiment (day 6, L/S ratio 12), the concentration of barium in solution unexpectedly increased by a factor of 50 (from 200 to 10 000 ¦g+l-1). This high concentration also sustained the following two days (L/S ratios 14 and 16) before dropping to the original level. pH showed a slight increase during these observations (pH 12.4 - 12.7). The phenomenon was also observed in a parallel and identical series. In addition to barium, aluminium and strontium clearly increased in the same manner, however not as much as barium. Furthermore, concentrations of chromium and molybdenum noticeably decreased at these distinct L/S ratios (12, 14 and 16). The behaviour of barium and subsequently strontium, aluminium, chromium and molybdenum is only partially understood. The decrease of chromium and molybdenum is suggested to be due to incorporation into the interlayer regions of hydrocalumite (Ca4Al2(OH)12(OH)2+6H2O), replacing the hydroxide groups, which also explains the increase in pH. Moreover, the increase of barium, strontium and aluminium could be attributable to dissolution of the silicate mineral celsian (Ba,Sr(Al2Si2O8)). Alternatively, barium and strontium increase could be explained by dissolution of a Ba,Sr(SO4)-solid solution and aluminium increase by dissolution of hydrocalumite or ettringite.

Utilisation of the InSAR technique for monitoring of subsidence in mining areas, employing open pit and underground mining methods, has large potential due to sensitivity and safety issues associated with usage of the classical surveying techniques. InSAR can also be very competitive concerning the cost of provided results. However, there are a few issues that may significantly limit InSAR applicability for subsidence monitoring in mining areas. The altered terrain topography, involving steep slopes and deep pits, may lead to the layover of radar signal for specific satellite and pit geometry. Also, the highly dynamic character of subsidence induced by mining, especially using mass mining methods, may lead to issues such as apparent heave and ambiguous results. In this paper the authors analyse the above-mentioned issues and demonstrate how InSAR technology was applied, as a supporting system, to monitor large scale and highly dynamic subsidence for a real case study in Western Australia.

GeoScience Victoria has completed quantitative assessments of undiscovered gold endowment in the northern parts of the Bendigo and Stawell Zones. The under cover area in the Bendigo Zone (10 000 km2) is likely to contain approximately 1000 t and at least 290 t of gold in undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold deposits. For the under cover area in the Stawell Zone (30 000 km2), the estimates are approximately 1200 t and at least 200 t of undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold. The Wambo Rail Spur located near Singleton, New South Wales, Australia, runs for 14 km linking the Mt Thorley rail loop and running north-west alongside Jerrys Plain Road to the Wambo Coal Mine at Warkworth. A portion of the project is a 260 m long tunnel located where the rail line passes under Jerrys Plain Road. The tunnel has a low cover and is mostly within highly weathered to fresh laminated siltstone interbedded with coal seams, sandstone and conglomerate. This paper presents the design basis and construction methods used to achieve the 100 year design life of the tunnel required by Wambo Coal while also satisfying settlement and vibration limits imposed on Jerrys Plain Road.

Tanking of tunnels is now often specified when inflows exceed as little as 1 L/s/km with a unit distance of 100 m. To demonstrate inflows over a 100 m segment of a tunnel are less than 0.1 L/s with a standard error of 0.01 L/s by timed, gravity filled, volume measurement up and downstream of the segment, the measuring cylinder volume (L) must exceed 10 Q, where Q is the flow in L/s, and the number measurements taken and averaged must exceed 20 . If a standard error of 0.02 L/s is acceptable then 5Q2 measurements must be taken and averaged. Epithermal deposits have been defined as the lower temperature end of a spectrum of hydrothermal mineral deposits and are inferred to have formed near the EarthÆs surface. The preservation of an epithermal gold deposit in an Archaean craton is rather problematic, especially when such deposits form clusters or groups as reported for the Pilbara and Yilgarn cratons. For two of the better studied examples of epithermal gold deposits in these cratons, Becher and Wiluna, the evidence that they formed near the Earth surface is non-diagnostic, and the epithermal origin appears uncertain. Despite the simplicity of the original definition, there have been numerous errors in classifying epithermal gold deposits. It is suggested that these errors are primarily due to poor criteria defining the group as there is limited evidence of poor observational science being the cause. The criteria being used to recognise epithermal gold deposits include tectonic setting, ore element suite and quartz vein textures. None of these are diagnostic of epithermal deposits and their link back to the original low pressure-temperature definition of the class is tenuous. There has been definition creep over time as new observations on potential epithermal gold deposits become accommodated within a flexible definition. There is some urgency establishing and then using criteria to reliably identify epithermal deposits. Distinction of epithermal gold from weathered gold deposits is an important step. Qualitative measurement of respirable dust in metal mines is limited and an example of this is demonstrated at Northparkes Mine, where operational experience was sought for measuring dust standards and identifying exposure limits. However, relying on operational experience has limited value due to variation in observations from person to person and is based on visible dust (which is larger in size than respirable dust). However, with sophisticated dust measuring equipment, like the real-time aerosol monitor, dust concentrations can be accurately measured and recorded concisely. Research conducted as part of a collaborative agreement on behalf of Northparkes to launch an occupational dust monitoring program was implemented on the mine site. To form the basis of this research, it was hypothesised that no proper dust measuring testing at the mine site had been adequately identified. In addition, existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards. This project will outline the results of an occupational dust monitoring program, hence greatly improving the capacity to quantify the health risks posed to employees.

Completeness of extraction of a mineral from ore depends on many reasons. First of all it is a function of quality of disintegration of ore. It is supposed that two basic factors: character of structure and texture of the ore aggregate and a disintegration technique influence the quality of the mineral aggregate destruction, æopeningÆ of its internal boundaries. In this paper, the problem of technological mineralogy from the point of view of genesis of the mineral aggregate, its typomorphical features and methods of their quantitative description are discussed. The purpose of this research is to provide information for technologists. It should enable the development of a rational flexible scheme of disintegration of ore with full extraction of a useful component, without its losses and without unnecessary expenses of energy. For achievement of this purpose the mineralogical information should have ½number and a measure+. By the authors, the technique of the quantitative analysis of fabric of the mineral aggregate based on several models û thermodynamic, crystallographic and geometrical is offered and discussed. The leading role in the quantitative analysis of a fabric of ore belongs to internal bounders. But internal bounders of the mineral aggregate by bounders or faces of the mineral individuals or mineral grains are formed. Their geometry, orientation concerning own (mineral grain) crystallographic lattices, orientation and distribution in space of the ore aggregate are proportional to the energy accumulated at origin and the further growth. These characteristics of mineral individuals are consequences of conditions of their formation. That is why the named triad of models is used. From crystallography it is known that faces of different stability and mobility form borders of crystals. They also contain different quantity of energy. Mineral grains also are faceted by different energy borders. They form intergrowths with each other according to a principle of balance or unbalance. That is why in addition to traditional parameters of the description of a fabric of the mineral aggregate (mode and grainmetrical composition) it is necessary to add new. For example, length and the square of intergrowthing bounders of mineral individuals differentiated (in couples), crystallographic symbols of borders, their roughness and so forth. Consequently, solving a problem of the geometrical characteristic of borders, we define also its power characteristic. In this paper experience of application of our technology in studying ores of one of deposits of Urals Mountains is presented. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices, which are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode, are possessed. Structure and texture of rock or ore aggregate reflect its formation and transformation conditions. It is important to understand that disintegration energy cannot be more than aggregation energy, the energy of intergrowths formation. The square and orientation of mineral individuals borders vary at pressures or stresses of mineral aggregate evolution. These phenomena often cause selective increase in the square of borders at constant average grain size, ie the granulation. Granulation presents the increase in quantity of mineral individuals while their modal share remains constant. At the same time their average mineral grains size. Some mineral individuals increase in size at increased pressure. When lithostatic or lateral pressure drops the majority of mineral grains increases in volume at the cost of intersticial or film solutions or fine grains. These are only special examples of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate. They illustrate our statement that all changes in fabric of the mineral aggregate are a reaction on varying external (ie geological) conditions. It is possible to consider that structurisation of totality of mineral individuals as a whole is a process of adaptation of the mineral aggregate, which forms and exists in varying force and energy fields. Differential and integrated geometry of total internal boundaries of the mineral aggregate serves as adaptation mechanism of the mineral grains system. Boundaries form intergrowths of the mineral aggregate. Thus, it is possible to consider that the most informative parameters of the stereometric analysis for restoration of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate are the following. First of all, it is a quantitative estimation of the volumetric shape of the ore mineral in crystallographic coordinates, a total area of borders of all mineral grains in the aggregate, the specific square of their boundaries, the specific square of intergrowth boundaries of the ore mineral separately with grains of each minerals of the matrix of the mineral aggregate as well as traditional grainsmetric and modal composition. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices that are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode are possessed.

The ever increasing demand for metals and minerals is putting significant pressure on current mining companies to find more ore. As these companies explore and mine, the future appears to be to go deeper and deeper underground. With depth, however, comes ever increasing costs as infrastructure such as hoisting, ventilation, the movement of workers and materials increase in size and scope. Further, the actual rock mass becomes prone to destruction through rock bursts and the heat generated becomes a major issue resulting in extreme expenditures in cooling plants and some of the biggest air movers in the world. All these issues result in dramatic changes in both capital and operating costs, subsequently making cut-off grades rise. As this trend continues there is an economic limit to how deep one can go, resulting therefore in a severe shortage of accessible ore deposits to mine. This paper discusses the need for larger marine robotics technology and presents the state-of-the-art in current research in underwater tele-autonomy, specifically the development of high bandwidth optical communication networks critical to any future activities (mining, construction, etc) underwater. During the design of a new production facility for a greenfields or significant brownfields expansion many design decisions are made driven by an unquestioning objective to achieve 'lowest cash-cost' production costs. In many cases this translates to a design and operating philosophy based on largest-available, single-line equipment. Although acknowledged as an approach that is efficient from an operating cost perspective does this approach always maximise shareholder value? There is an increasing awareness in the mining industry of the value of project flexibility, robustness and value options. The design of a new production facility creates a window of opportunity which should be structured to ensure that project value options and robustness are understood and exploited. This requires the use of emerging valuation methodologies, such as Value-at-Risk and Real Options, as well as tried and trusted NPV/IRR approaches. The paper provides an overview of the basis and application of these less well known techniques in the context of metallurgical plant design. Design guidelines that demonstrate how value options and flexibility can be quantified from both a risk and value perspective are presented. Issues such as use of single versus multiple line equipment, optimum cut-off grade and improved exploitation of the inherent variability of the orebody are also examined. Finally the management issues and approaches to achieving this will be briefly discussed; for example it is common during project development to drive towards increasing certainty as rapidly as possible to facilitate 'accurate' estimation of costs. Understanding and exploiting value options requires a project culture that tolerates, and revels in, ambiguity and uncertainty û something that would make many project teams uncomfortable!

We present plate tectonic reconstructions, showing that porphyry-type ore deposits are spatially and temporally linked to ridge subduction. A reconstruction of the Peruvian subduction system reveals an immediate metallogenic response to the arrival of the Nazca Ridge at the subduction trench, followed by southward migration of the zone of metallogenic activity due to the lateral migration of the zone of ridge subduction. A similar pattern is recognised in central Chile , where the spatio-temporal distribution of giant ore deposits coincides with the arrival of the Juan Fernandez hotspot chain at the subduction zone. We conclude that there is a spatial and temporal link between ridge subduction and ore deposit formation, with high metal fluxes concentrated in zones of ridge subduction. Thus, the recognition of tectonic patterns associated with ridge subduction can provide insights into predictive mineral discovery by enhancing our ability to predict the position of large mineral deposits in other modern and ancient orogens. The West Coast of South Africa is well known for its placer gem quality diamond deposits and also associated with these hosts of Cenozoic unconsolidated marine and aeolian sand and gravel are significant concentrations of heavy minerals. Exploration for economic concentrations of zircon, ilmenite and rutile along the coast started in the mid-1980s. This resulted in the discovery of an inferred 1.6 billion tonne resource with a grade of ten per cent total heavy minerals (THM), which developed into the Namakwa Sands Mine, a world-class producer of heavy minerals. Several other resources, including satellite deposits proximal and distal to the mine area, extensive diamond mine dumps and present day beach placers, demonstrate the vast heavy mineral potential along the West Coast. The favourable gangue to economic mineral ratio, a higher zircon content compared to other similar deposits, relatively lower U+TH content of zircon, low slimes content and effectively pristine low chromium-manganese ilmenite of these deposits, render them attractive exploration targets. Negative factors that will affect conventional mineral beneficiation and liberation include secondary mineral coatings and the regional coastal development of several layers of superimposed duricrust. The economically attractive heavy mineral assemblage along the West Coast is the result of erosion of the proximal, gneissic Namaqualand Metamorphic Province and mature Table Mountain Group sandstone, concentration by marine and aeolian processes and preservation under arid climatological conditions over a period of more than 100 Ma.

The Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in northern Finland contains disseminated Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides, and platinum-group minerals (PGM). The 2.05 Ga-old ultramafic-mafic, funnel-shaped intrusion is intruded into a volcanosedimentary sequence. The major ore minerals are pentlandite, hexagonal pyrrhotite and troilite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and magnetite. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite are replaced by pyrite, millerite and heazelwoodite near the surface. Nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite are locally abundant. A pilot feed sample of 575 t of the main orebody at Kevitsa had average grades 0.45 per cent Cu, 0.36 per cent Ni, 1.85 per cent S, 0.33 g/t Pt, 0.34 g/t Pd and 0.19 g/t Au, with 0.06 per cent Ni contained in silicates. Higher PGE contents (2 - 27 ppm) occur in a vertical N-S bearing fault zone. The PGM (n = 6022) mapped in specimens of four drill holes, consist of sperrylite 34.7 vol per cent, braggite and cooperite 18.5 vol per cent, geversite 17.2 vol per cent, moncheite 14.7 vol per cent, merenskyite 6.7 vol per cent, stibiopalladinite 4.3 vol per cent, sobolevskite 1.9 vol per cent, kotulskite 0.7 vol per cent, michenerite 0.6 vol per cent, keithconnite 0.3 vol per cent, rustenburgite 0.1 vol per cent, melonite, froodite, laurite together 0.1 vol per cent and only a few grains of sudburyite, irarsite, vysotskite, erlichmanite, hongishiite, Pt-Cu-alloys, three undefined Pd and Pt bismuthinides and antimonides and a Pd-Cu-bearing Pt-Ni-Fe sulfide. Most of the PGM, 62 per cent, are enclosed in silicates, 29 per cent are intergrown with sulfides, nine per cent are within sulfides. A portion of the PGE occurs in solid solution in sulfides and arsenides. Ni flotation yielded smelter-grade concentrates averaging 12.2 per cent nickel. The average sulfide Ni recovery is 78.8 per cent and total Ni recovery is 65.3 per cent. The average Pt is 10 g/t at 55 per cent recovery, Pd 7.7 g/t at 38 per cent recovery and Au 1.6 g/t at ten per cent recovery. Cu concentrates averaged 28.6 per cent Cu with an average recovery of 78 per cent and further 11 per cent in the nickel concentrate. The copper concentrate contains 4 g/t Au at 24 per cent recovery. The average Fe to MgO ratio 17.9 is well above the targeted minimum of 4.5. The pilot results show that the previously used TETA (triethylene tetramine) can be avoided and good quality, smelter-grade concentrates can be produced from the Kevitsa ore at economical levels of recovery by conventional flotation methods.

Carbonation of reinforced concrete is a potential durability issue for vehicular tunnels. This is particularly the case where elevated carbon dioxide concentrations exist and when the design life is 100 years or more. The process of carbonation can result in loss of passive protection to embedded steel reinforcement and initiation of corrosion. Therefore, tunnel design needs to consider the potential for carbonation on internal surfaces and how design life can be achieved in severe environments. This paper examines methods for predicting carbonation and how deterioration can be mitigated through appropriate concrete mix design and construction practices.

Since mining-induced seismicity first became apparent at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in 2002, there has been an ongoing program of geotechnical investigations to understand the phenomenon and allow for the development of strategies to manage the risks it posed to personnel, the business and the community at large. Studies resulting from a seismically induced rockfall on Anzac Day 2006 have been extensive, and have advanced the understanding and management of seismicity at the mine. Enhancement of the mineÆs seismic array, implementation of extensive monitoring of ground behaviour, improved ground support and reinforcement design, and ongoing numerical modelling provide a technical framework for the management of seismicity. In addition, extensive involvement of the workforce in risk assessment and the development of standard work procedures (SWPs), has contributed to a æbest practiceÆ approach to manage seismic hazards at the mine.

The mineral processing industry is in boom times. The focus on mill availability and therefore profitability has never been greater, as grinding mill maintenance often dictates the entire plant shut down duration. Advances in mill systemsÆ quality and reliability and the faster, safer relining afforded by RMEÆs Mill Relining Systems have significantly enhanced grinding plant availability and utilisation. Yet relining performance is still affected by the design and planning by a team of stakeholders long before the maintenance team set foot in the mill. For a greenfield grinding plant project, these team players include: 1. project owner, 2. project manager, 3. mill supplier, 4. liner supplier, 5. plant operating personnel, 6. plant maintenance personnel, 7. mill relining crew, and  8. mill reline system supplier (RME). The complex and sometimes competing design demands of mill construction and operation together with the pressure of tight timelines can result in even simple maintenance requirements being overlooked let alone optimising plant design and planning for maintenance. This paper identifies all the involved stakeholders in an effective mill relining 'team' and gives principles and considerations for each to more effectively achieve the goals within their vital roles. This paper is aimed to be a practical guide for grinding mill designers and planners to more fully exploit the advances in Mill Relining Systems and improve their mill profitability.

The Augusta underground mine at Costerfield in Central Victoria has been in operation since mid 2006; however, AGD Operations Pty Ltd have explored and undertaken open pit operations in the area for over 20 years. The high-grade, narrow gold-antimony orebody is being mined using both mechanised and hand-held methods, to produce up to 70 000 tonnes per annum at ten grams per tonne gold and six per cent stibnite. AGD Operations Pty Ltd processes the ore on site using gravity and flotation to produce two products; a concentrate which is sold to Chinese smelters and a gravity concentrate which is refined off-site. The circuit achieves up to 30 per cent recovery of gold from gravity methods. There are many challenges in the underground mine, including an orebody with an average width of 300 mm, very poor rock mass conditions in the host rock and variable dips in the ore along strike, between 45¦ and 90¦. The upper levels of the mine have been developed ready for stoping; however, their depths range from 20 m to 70 m below surface in both oxide and transitional material. A major fault structure consisting of mud has been encountered underground and is associated with the orebody causing very poor ground conditions, water inflow and requiring additional reinforcement. The northern limit of the mine is defined by the proximity of historical workings in the South Costerfield mine, which is being continuously dewatered.
