This paper illustrates the use of variography and moving average plots as an aid to analysing variations in the process that can be used to direct the improvement efforts. The hydrometallurgical processes used in manganese metal production consist of sequential unit operations that include milling and reduction of manganese ores. Leaching of the reduced ore, is followed by solid-liquid separation, residue disposal, solution purification and electrowinning of manganese metal completes the process. The nearly 250 integrated process control loops rely on reports of pH, flow pressure, level, temperature and chemical analyses. Metallurgical accounting, reconciliation and process control is achieved through monitoring of the chemical and mass balances within the manganese reduction plant, requiring approximately 50 000 analyses of solids, powders and liquids each month. The largest numbers of samples are taken in the cell house. Changes and variations monitored by sample statistics ensure that the manganese products comply with predetermined specification limits. Optimising the information-value of the approximately 50 000 samples in the manganese plant is carried out in tandem with ongoing process optimisation. Variographic analysis of daily sampling data suggests that the cyclical behaviour evident in the moving average plots is only a reflection of random residual variability and not a reflection of true underlying variability related to cyclical phenomena. Low resolution in the variogram of daily sampling data masks the short-range variability that emerges when hourly data are analysed. Hourly samples collected over a 39-day period (giving 941 sample data), helped identify short-range cycles in the process. The relative distribution of variability for daily sample intervals, indicate that 57 per cent arises from V[0], 18 per cent from V[process] and 16 per cent from random residual variation. V[0] includes all the uncontrolled sampling error arising from a poor sampling protocol, the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. This confirms the suspicions regarding the suboptimality of the sampling protocol and the way it is implemented. The absence of long-term trends in the leach suggests that short-term variation (less than one day) dominates the process. While the control charts indicate that the overall processes are maintained above the lower specification limits and the target values, there is nevertheless a considerable amount of variability in the system that overhangs the processes and threatens to impact them negatively. Although the variability in the leach is above the prescribed limits, the volatility is a matter of concern because it seems to be uncontrolled. The comparison of the various sources of variability in data collected on an hourly basis suggests that the short-term random variability (V[0]) accounts for almost 50 per cent of the variability in the process. The main source of this variability is due to errors in the sampling protocol and is probably related to the size of the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. Remediation of FE and GSE will probably lead to a reduction in V[0], whereas V[process] could be mitigated by reducing the biases associated with DE and EE in particular.

Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty. The North-South Bypass Tunnel is the first project to get underway as part of BrisbaneÆs transport plan, which aims to improve the urban road network. The total length to be excavated is 6.8 km, which includes 4.8 km of driven tunnel and associated road connections. Construction commenced in August 2006 with project completion targeted well before the contractual completion date of October 2010. Due to the local geology, in particular the hard Brisbane tuff and neranleigh-fernvale formation, a combination of tunnel excavation methods are used. The majority of the tunnel is excavated by two tunnel boring machines which have a rate of progress of 16 - 20 m per day in rock having a compressive strength of between 80 and 150 MPa. Ten roadheaders operate at a rate of up to 2 m per day excavating the remaining tunnels, such as ramps, access tunnels, cross passages and merges. The tunnel team are managing the challenges and complexities associated with tunnelling through the hard Brisbane rock. A major challenge arose during the planning of the initial mainline excavation underneath the Royal National Association Showground in Bowen Hills. This section contains low rock cover and historical maps indicate that the showground is located within a former topographic depression (alluvial valley), which a creek once flowed through.Due to traffic merge design requirements, both tunnel boring machine (TBM) and roadheader excavation methods were required to be used in this challenging geological profile. The answer was to stabilise the alluvium above both TBM section tunnels from the surface prior to excavation and to operate the TBM in single shield mode with immediate grouting of annular void from the tail shield. In addition, the roadheader section of tunnel required additional support by spiles and canopy tubes installed from the tunnel face.

The Ekati Diamond Mine is located on permafrost terrain in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine rock consists of: diamond-bearing and barren kimberlite; and surrounding waste rock such as granite. The kimberlite occurs in several vertical æpipesÆ that are, or will be, mined using open pits. Early predictions of drainage chemistry at Ekati identified the potential for ARD due to sulfide oxidation from both waste rock and kimberlite. This was surprising for the kimberlite, because neutralisation potentials (NP) are typically hundreds of kg CaCO3 equivalent/t. However, subsequent testwork showed that substantial portions of the NP ædisappearedÆ quickly, apparently due to the unusual non-carbonate mineralogy. In any case, additional predictive work concluded much of the rock was benign and there would be no ARD. Shortly after mining started, ARD appeared from both the waste rock and kimberlite, although a few years passed before the company and its consultants recognised that at least some of the acidic water was ARD. Numerous other processes have been put forward as possible explanations for the remaining acidic drainage, although none have been either confirmed or eliminated. Because: the causes of the ARD and acidity are not known; no causes have been eliminated and more have been added; drainage chemistry was not predicted accurately; and future mining will encounter similar rock. I believe the Ekati Diamond Mine needs high-level assistance to understand current chemistry and to avoid problems with future drainage. Organisations like INAP, MEND3, and universities could provide this assistance.

The 335 000 oz Wilber Deposit is located within the Meekatharra-Wydgee Archaean greenstone belt in the Murchison District of Western Australia. The deposit comprises high-grade gold mineralisation hosted within a steeply west-dipping quartz lode, which lies within a broader (20–60?m) north-east striking shear zone envelope. Locally, the northerly-trending host rock geology includes greenschist facies high-Mg basalt (albite, actinolite, chlorite, biotite, calcite, zoisite, muscovite and titanate) intruded by at least two generations of felsic to intermediate porphyries (albite, actinolite, zoisite, chlorite, sericite, biotite, quartz and titanate). The Archaean rocks are cross-cut by a number of east–west striking Proterozoic dolerite dykes (biotite (50 per cent), albite, carbonate, epidote, titanate and actinolite) that are interpreted to have intruded pre-existing regional structures. The entire mine package is cross-cut by a system of shallow north-east-striking, north-west-dipping, barren quartz veins that commonly contain large (up to 30 cm), euhedral, smokey quartz megacrysts.The north-east-trending lode lies within a 3 m wide shear zone and varies from a single discrete 0.5 to 4 m wide laminated, massive or brecciated quartz-carbonate vein to multiple laminated veins up to 1 m wide within the shear. The veins exhibit strong boudinage, with cross-cutting quartz-carbonate seal veins in the boudin necks. The boudin necks often contain pink calcite. The shear zone fabric wraps closely around the boudin necks proximal to the vein, becoming more lode parallel distal to the vein. The lode is offset by a north to north-north-west trending fault.Mineralisation occurs as free gold within the quartz carbonate veins, with accessory sulfides including pyrite ± chalcopyrite, ± galena ± sphalerite. Fuchsite is observed in the veins, as laminar wall rock inclusions, with visible gold commonly associated with the wall rock laminations.Gold grades range from less than 1 g/t within the hosting shear zone, either at the margins or interstitial to the veins, to approximately 30 g/t in the single vein, and up to greater than 60 g/t in the multiple vein areas. Uranium minerals were found in Australia as early as 1869, but it was not until the 1940's that a search specifically for uranium was begun. Instrument types and techniques used in early exploration are still used today, but have been developed into more sophisticated and portable types. Recent improvements in exploration have been the introduction of the gamma ray spectrometer, radon sampling and geochemical surveys. The environments of presently defined uranium deposits are predominantly sedimentary. Known deposits in igneous environments are usually small. The size of targets which are likely to provide economic deposits is of the order of 10,000 tons U308, producible at a cost of less than $10 per pound. Such targets are most likely to be in Precambrian sediments or in granitic masses. Recent exploration in Australia has included investigation of Precambrian sediments, Precambrian and Palaeozoic granites, Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments, Precambrian volcanic rocks and brecciated masses of unknown age. The origin and method of emplacement of uranium in these environments is not well known but there are indications that syngenetic sedimentary processes are important, and volcanic rocks may make a major contribution to the supply of uranium.

The paper reviews some of the aerodynamic factors in the blast furnace process and outlines the areas requiring further study. Detailed discussion is given to the pressure drop in both the dry and the wet zone of the furnace and an optimum coke size is suggested for minimum pressure drop. The effect of various charging sequences on the distribution of the gas in the furnace shaft is treated and notes on stack injection included. Flow phenomena limiting blast furnace output and the influence of aerodynamics on the movement of the bed in the furnace are outlined and these include fluidisation, flooding and raceway formation. A mention is made of alkalis, sulphur, zinc, softening, and oil injection and the mixed effect in blast furnace economics of increased tuyere velocity as problems requiring further research.

Mining operations have large power requirements. The biggest consumers of energy are the drives for the mills located in the concentrators. Assuming that the decision is made on how many mills are needed and how big these mills will be, it can be determined how these mills should be driven. The decision as to which drive should be applied depends on design limits for different mechanical or electrical drives, anticipated operation modes, capital expenditure optimisation and lifecycle cost optimisation.The task for the engineer specifying the drive equipment is to select a drive solution that can debottleneck the operation, avoid interruption of production and enhance the reliability of the process. At the same time, the engineer must choose a design that enables cost optimisation either in a single investment or in relation to the total cost of ownership (TCO).This paper outlines different mechatronic or electric drive alternatives for tube or horizontal mills applied in the mining industry, along with their advantages and disadvantages. The current methods for predicting pillar strengths are reviewed. A two-dimensional model, based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is proposed for determining the compressive strength across the width of a long pillar. The model can be used to determine pillar strength and the depth of the crushed (ie yielding) zone from the pillar edges. The values of the parameters in the model, namely the cohesion and internal friction angle of the coal seam, friction angles at the contact of the coal seam with the roof and floor are determined by matching the strengths predicted by this model with the Bieniawski pillar strength formula for pillar width to height ratios up to 5. It is found that the derived values of these parameters are quite close to the results from laboratory tests. Based on the model, a preliminary analysis of pillar stability is made.

The underground storage of LPG and other hydrocarbons is in current commercial use in Northern Hemisphere countries in Europe, Asia and the USA.Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, embarked on a worldwide feasibility investigation in 1989 to establish the viability of constructing an underground LPG storage facility in Sydney, Australia, the first of its kind in the country. Elgas recognised that with the limited 19 000 tonnes of storage capacity at Port Botany and the limitations imposed by use of small coastal ships (up to 10 000 tonnes capacity), a larger storage facility was required to utilise higher capacity ships from more remote sources such as the North West shelf and overseas. This would achieve security of supply in high demand periods and economies of scale. The underground option also provides improvements to safety and environmental standards.

The areas of impact when employing high productivity long wall systems are reviewed and the financial implications of the most significant areas highlighted. A distinction has been made between availability and utilization. The need for more efficient delay recording, together with increasing control and utilization of the systems has been identified and the measurability of the latter discussed. The increased use of electronic delay reporting direct from the operating unit as the basis for operational control and a pre-emptive maintenance philosophy is seen as an important area of achieving higher performances from existing long wall production systems and Configurations.

The Golden Cross, low-sulfidation, epithermal deposit shows a number of features that are directly or indirectly related to boiling hydrothermal fluids. Occurrences of lattice calcite and their quartz pseudomorph equivalents in veins, and occurrences of adularia in veins and in the surrounding altered rocks in the vicinity of ore, are both direct evidence of deposition in the presence of boiling hydrothermal fluids. Loss of carbon dioxide causes calcite deposition (platy variety) near the level of first boiling, while adularia deposits due to the attendant pH increase along the cooling flow path. Indirect evidence of boiling include crustiform-colloform quartz banding, late massive calcite veins, clay-carbonate alteration in the shallow and peripheral parts of the ore zone, and the restricted vertical interval of precious metal mineralisation. The colloform quartz banding strongly resembles the banding in amorphous silica deposits found in geothermal surface pipes. This implies that fluids ascending the Empire Vein structure were saturated in amorphous silica. If so, then they must have undergone phase separation, which initiated at considerable depth (e.g. =1000 m) and very hot temperatures (e.g. =300¦C). On the basis of stable isotope data, late massive calcite veins appear to have deposited from CO2-rich steam-heated waters. Calcite deposited along heating paths as these waters descended into the upflow zone during late stage collapse of the hydrothermal plume. In active systems, such steam heated waters form by deep boiling. The high CO2 contents of these waters promote hydrolytic alteration and the formation of clay-carbonate alteration. Reaction path modelling using CHILLER and a deep, Broadlands-Ohaaki water as an analogue, shows that minerals deposit along boiling flow paths over discrete spatial intervals. Calcite and adularia deposit near the site of first boiling, followed by gold and then by amorphous silica. For deep boiling starting at 300¦C, these minerals deposit over a path length that exceeds 1000 m. The distribution of banded quartz and gold at Golden Cross are consistent with such a boiling model. However, the elevation of first boiling must have fluctuated over 500 m to account for the coincidence of lattice quartz (pseudomorphs of platy calcite) and adularia, crustiform-colloform silica and gold over distances of a few centimeters in veins. We deduce that a downward propagating boiling front and expansion of two-phase flashing in a flowing water column occurred during episodes of high vertical permeability and fluid flux in the Empire vein structure.

The mining industry is quite often faced with declining selling prices for its products in the face of rising prices for the input cost resources that it uses. Blasting is a key activity within the mining system and has a vital role to play within the Mine to MillTM concept. It is therefore important that blasting makes a positive contribution to mine profit and productivity. There are several variables involved in considering the profitability and productivity of blasting. The rock types and structures, the bench height, the blast hole drill rig specifications, hole diameter, spacing and burden, explosive loading and initiation and blast size fragmentation. Productivity accounting is a methodology which is used elsewhere to give additional insights into the productivity and pricing factors that drive the financial performance of a business. Miners know intuitively that productivity and pricing influence costs and profit, but only with productivity accounting can the dollars involved be calculated. Drilling and blasting are part of a chain of unit operations in a mine. For an owner-miner, drilling and blasting would be considered as cost centres and a productivity accounting cost model approach would be relevant. On the other hand a contractor is likely to consider drilling and blasting as a profit centre, in which case a productivity accounting profit model approach would be appropriate. Both of these will be explained. The paper provides a basic outline of deterministic productivity accounting and demonstrates its application to blasting. Drilling and blasting data from a mine was obtained for a two-month period. The change in productivity and prices was calculated to obtain the dollar contributions from them towards the change in cost. It was determined that although there had been productivity dollar gains these were offset by larger pricing dollar losses, the net effect being that total drilling and blasting costs increased. The productivity accounting analysis gives the facts and the mine is in a position to establish priorities based on knowing the dollar contributions of each input used.

In recent years, the use of steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) for segmental tunnel linings has become increasingly popular due to numerous advantages including durability, resistance to spalling, reduced cracking at corners and edges and significant cost-saving potential. One of the key parameters for measuring the performance of SFRC is the residual (post crack) flexural strength. A problem often faced in design and quality control of SFRC is the high variability of results obtained by standard beam test methods, with reported coefficients of variability (CoV) in the order of 25 per cent. The high test variability results in a relatively low permissible design strength relative to the average flexural strength of the material and commonly leads to non-conformances with respect to residual flexural strength during production testing.This paper presents the implementation of an alternative testing method using large round determinate panels (RDPs) for quality control testing of the SFRC used in the segmental lining of the City East Cable Tunnel (CECT) in Sydney. The alternative RDP test method was found to correlate well with standard beam tests and significantly reduce the variability of test results, minimising the risk of outlying residual flexural strength results, with zero non-compliant test results reported during the production period.This successful implementation of an alternative test for post-crack flexural strength with lower variability in results constitutes a relevant precedent to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach which contributes to the development of more cost-effective concrete mixes and minimises the risk for non-compliant results and the contractual disputes that commonly arise from these.CITATION:Cortes, F, Nievergelt, R and Kost, S, 2014. Production of refined zinc (99.95 per cent) at the minesite without increasing greenhouse gas emissions is considered. As an example, exploitation of the full reserve of the McArthur River orebody is proposed, using the existing concentrator, whilst introducing radically innovative smelting technology. Bulk flotation of all the sulphide minerals is followed by smelting in a melt circulation reactor with tonnage oxygen. By smelting the high-energy pyritic concentrate and reacting the evolved sulphur dioxide with near-mine dolomite, a large amount of electricity can be generated. This is enough to supply all the requirements for the smelter itself, an air separation plant and a facility for compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is disposed of off-shore for enhanced oil recovery or by other means. The reacted dolomite fixes sulphur as an inert and environmentally acceptable solid residue. Treatment by these means leads to virtually zero gas emission smelting. The paper concludes with a vision for the future in which expansion of zinc smelting capacity is seen to be definitely needed.
